Swayman makes 36 saves NHL-leading Bruins beat Jets 3-0

"The bruins bounced back from their first back to back regulation losses of the season by blanking the jets three zero. Jeremy swayman handled 36 shots in his third shot out of the season and 8th of his career. The guys did such a good job boxing out. Let me see punch from the point. Made my job easy. So it was a good team win. We're excited about it. He got all the support he'd need when Trent Frederick scored just 50 seconds into the game. Pavel zacha also tallied in the first period at Dumas snow shek added an empty netter for the NHL's top team. The Jets have won four of their last 15 games after challenging for a division title. Connor hellebuyck stopped 21 shots for Winnipeg. I'm Dave ferry.

"With the helper, cliffed in with a goal that was awesome to meet you. Orloff with the goal. I mean, a three point game for orlov, a goal and two assists. Plus three on the day. I mean, he just continues to just do what's needed. And I think that I'll talk about it later. David passed an act with a goal and two assists. I mean, and obviously Jacob walco, he had two goals. It continues to shove it in my face. For healthy for health bombing him a weekend ago. Well, I would like to see him get more playing time too. And you know, just going off of what we were just talking about in terms of mixing different guys into special teams. Again, bergeron not the highest forward when it came to shorthanded time. But you see some, you know, you see a minute 25 shorthanded for Jake the brusque. Not your typical penalty killer, right? So AJ grier played some penalty kill. Trent Frederick Pavel zaka played a minute 15 of the penalty kill garnet Hathaway out there killing penalties. So Tomas no sick a minute, 42 on the penalty kill. So again, if we're going to keep getting penalties, which it looks like we are because, you know, again, it's been my crawled up my ass since the season started are the penalties. If we're going to keep getting penalties, we got to spread the time out and that was a perfect example. And again, when you get a nice big lead, you have the freedom as we just mentioned to expand the roster come special teams, but it's nice to see that. And you mentioned Charlie Coyle. I wonder the more he gets minutes on things like shorthanded, the more that boosts his confidence. You know, when you're that third line center and you could be at number two center anywhere else in the league, but you're playing third line minutes. I don't know if it gets frustrating. I don't know if it cools you off a little bit. I don't know, but

"Jake debrusk scored two minutes into his first game in 6 weeks before the bruins closed out a 6 two win over the islanders. The brusque was back after missing 17 games with hand and leg injury suffered in the winter classic. He scored a power play goal on his second shift, Trent Frederick scored twice for the bees, who also received goals from Nick foligno, Patrice bergeron and Pavel zacha. "He learned how to make decisions quicker, and as a result, he goes from a player who was on the cusp of not making NHL to becoming a player who realistically probably should have gone somewhere in the 5 to 15 range. And now he's a perfectly adequate player in that draft range. I mean, he's a very solid player. He's a success story in his own way. We often look at the players who were drafted too late, and then they beat the odds and became incredible. And I think he's a great example of sometimes, even the players who think just will never make it, figure out a way to do it. Yeah, well, he certainly carved out carving out what's looked like it's going to be a long product of NHL career for him, which is also kind of funny why when teams and they've gone away from it a bit here recently and wisened up to it, but there was an era in an HL drafting where teams would draft role players incredibly high and they'd be like, well, this guy's going to be a great fourth liner for us or something. And it's like, no, if that's already what he is, he's probably not going to be an NHL generally, the best role players are guys who are very productive. Major junior players and had to take their lumps and adapt and grow and do essentially exactly what Dylan strom has done over the past couple of years to reinvent themselves and find a way to stick in the league. And so drafting purely for need gets you into so many issues, but I think that's one of them. Yeah, and there are so many guys that can go up and down the list. I think Trent Frederick lives the one who had that famous quote where we drafted this guy to be a third liner. And everyone was like, oh, I can't believe they said that. Turns out, he's a perfectly reasonable third liner because, as history showed, he was actually a very skilled player. And in the NHL, like the fourth of the average fourth ladder in the NHL, does things that you would not expect most first line OHL scores to do. Yep. And the Frederick was an environment where he didn't get to show off those skills, ghost Wisconsin. He shows them off, and then he makes the NHL the exact role to bring projecting the mask. And so we can look at that as then having a poor philosophy, which arguably it might have been, but in this particular case, I kind of like to see it as they were being realistic. That's a very glass half full of image. All right, this was fun. I'm glad we finally got to do this. I'll allow you to plug some stuff right now and let people know kind of what you worked on or where they can check you out because I've been ending a lot of shows in the past by using this as an opportunity to promote your work. I like you on a companion and I want to talk about him as well. You know I got a call up and one of the reasons why he was called up was obviously was, hey, you busted your ass down in the minor pros for many years. And he is a thank you game and so on. But he's also a good penalty killer. He's probably the best penalty killer. The depth of this organization has, believe it or not, outside of the Boston Bruins current lineup. And he's good in the faceoffs. 5 of 7 in that night. You know, he did a good job going in there for Thomas nosek who was injured and has a hand injury that prevented him from doing face offs. Now, here's my thing about yuna and no sec is if you're that engine and you can't take a face off. Why are you in the lineup? If you can't, if you can't take a face off, how much stress on your hand, regardless if it's the upper part, which is not doesn't move a ton. Well, you lower part where it's constantly riding up and down the shaft, sick people, get your thoughts out of there. But yeah, why play him? Why play him? And not somebody that's healthy and so on. So I think you and us should have been in for a couple of games, not just cracking. Yeah. And then he got sent back down to Providence. And Chris Wagner was also in the Wagner thing drives me nuts because everybody was like, why not give wags a freaking longer chance? He was only brought up for the purpose of being an extra forward on the California road trip. The Boston Bruins have been notorious for doing stuff like this because Providence to California is pretty freaking far away if you need to make an immediate call. On Thursday night when they played the kings, if something happened, they would have to get somebody across the country. Why not carry an extra forward so you're minimize all that travel? But then the regular season started, we saw our Thomas nosek. Again, with Nick foligno, he had a whole year last year to adjust here with his family and so on and the situation. We're getting a better Nick foligno out of him. Lenius almack the same thing, play appeared in 41 games last year split time with Jeremy swab and he had a full year and then look at what we're seeing right now. So I think it's just all about timing and getting readjusted, like you said, Mark. I think that it's all about adapting to a new situation. I think Nick foligno and Thomas no cigar, a great examples of that. Based on their last year's play, translate into this year's play. "You know, you're not trading for getting guy from the rusk right away, even if a move happens in the next day or so, you know, getting him for at least a couple more days. You're right not getting this, you know, a guy like hurdle or Miller or anything like that, and they made a future. So what do you have to do to really shake up these lines? Easiest way is to break up that top line and whether that be Martian hall swapping, which is probably the more unlikely scenario. I mean, I think the one people probably look at the most is past and ox Smith, which hell, if you get that second line rolling a little bit more because it's not only the fact that, you know, you need to give a gala coil more firepower. But you also need to get a guy like Taylor hall going. Whether that. I mean, you saw that in Marshall was suspended. Even though that top line with hall didn't score, looked pretty good, right? Taylor hall was a lot more engaged. He looked more like the hall you saw during that 6 week stretch last year when he was with crazy and Smith where you had a legit guy paired with him. So it's one of those things where down the road again, we've said before, they just really need a two C to push guys like coil and hollow down the lineup, but for right now, as you try to find the next piece, it seems like the easiest switcheroo or a way to really inject or shake up those lines is to break up that top line. So whether it's possible not going to Smith or hall Martian, either one gives you a different look and at the very least should give you just more options throughout the lineup because again it's not just the fact that I think bergeron with either marching opossum is still going to be a very good line. You need to get that second line going. And especially a guy like hall who, I mean, that second one is a whole struggled against Vancouver, but hall especially was just brutal. You need someone that really can get him going. And someone that can maybe play with him in terms of his speed, which is where pasta and I could work. Because you just need a game to start bearing some chances because you need him to get on a roll. Yeah, it's funny he missed a wide open one timer on a two on one. And what's funny is Trent Frederick started the play. Like Trent Frederick got who passed the puck across the hall, but he got that player in the puck. And it's like, you know, obviously we all say, well, Taylor hall needs a legit second line center. Well, that was a chance, and he just blew it. And I think that's one of the things where it's like, at some point, dude, you gotta just bury your chances. Like you're paid to bury those chances, you got to bury them, or you got to create your own..

"And he entered in on the fourth line, didn't really play a ton, played only about 9 minutes at 5 on 5 time, not a ton elsewhere. He didn't see a ton of them. Wasn't noticeable. I mean, again, he was playing with Carson Coleman and Trent Frederick. I think there's a few takeaways from this. My first thought was why he didn't play with Coyle and hall. I didn't really understand that. I get no psych had a good game against the sabers on the second line, but sonic is potentially a top 6 forward of the future for you. Why would you not against the San Jose sharks in game four of the season? Why wouldn't you just try them out between coil and haul? To Cassie did not speak on that, did he? I hate more or less just focus on his overall games that he wasn't really noticeable, which I mean, it's time to get noticed when you're on the fourth line. And again, we've talked about before mapping out maybe he stops in the fourth line builds his way up. Well, it's tough to get off of that fourth line when only 20% of your face offs are on the offensive zone. They weren't just like, you know, put them together on full line. It was grind out shifts. Like against top 6 competition, like you're really not going to shine the spot like that where you've got where young player likes tonika. And it's just I think the fact that, sure, he inside on the fourth line, he can take those tough shifts. And he has value, you know, if you want to put him on the PK, what have you. There wasn't one point where he got swapped with no sick at all, which if you're going to see what this guy has, like, what better opportunity wasn't like Coyle was like, you know, dicing up the competition at two C, where it's like all right, well, our hands are tied here. We get more coil. He was literally on the wing. And again, notice they got a good game against buffalo, but you have to look in the long term, look ahead, is Thomas nose they're going to be your second line center and a year from now two years is Jackson nica potentially going to be. He could, but you're not going to know if he's going to be buried on the fourth line in a role like that too. It's not, you know, there's been plenty of teams that their fourth line functions is more of almost like a, you know, they still get 50% ozone raps like they're not like just a pure shutdown line. So Nico was, again, more or less fed to the wolves in terms of how they were matched up against San Jose. So yeah, it's a tough break for him. I mean, I don't think he was super engaged, but also it wasn't playing to any of his strengths at all. It doesn't seem like it helps anyone long-term, short term, anything like that, because the bruins don't really know what they haven't said. Nica still, even though there was a two C spot, that was available in that game..

"So again, there doesn't seem to be a place. But as you said, Cassidy's been kind of talking down on Trent Frederick to begin this training camp in the preseason kind of say you need to have more tempo. And it's a debate about Lazar and Wagner. And then obviously went on sign no check, but I do wonder though, as you said, if Frederick can kind of fit in somewhere or not Frederick, said nica can kind of fit in on that fourth line. 'cause again it changes the identity of the line. If you can roll out no second on the left wing, technique down the middle and a lazzaro Wagner on the right side. I don't hate that line. That line doesn't and again, people forget to sneak as a good two way center. That's not a bad two way center. So he can play those defensive draws, but again, you don't want to stymie his career. If you're going to project him to be a top 6 center, you don't want him playing bottom 6 minutes. But again, he's been in Providence for what two, three years now? It's been a while down there. It's not like he's doing anything new. If he plays there this year. So I mean, it's literally like when you play like be a pro and NHL. It's like, would you rather be like racking up points down on the AHL? Would you like be like the fourth line grinder who gets like PK minutes of the NHL level? Like, what's better for us and development at this point of his career? It's not like a lifestyle over in Vancouver where he's gonna pile on points that's great for his development at this stage, but if Snickers got 40 points and 45 AHL games, that can help him out at this point or is it gonna be like being a trusted penalty killer, you know, potting a short handed goal contributing that area? Where are you getting the most out of him at this stage where he's 22 years old, right? So I think you have to find a role even that's not a conventional fourth line role, because even Bruce cas talked about it, right? His idea of a fourth line isn't like a checking unit of just like a physical group. He said it's a puck possession line. So if the neg is holding on to the puck, it means good in transition if he's helping out on the PK..

"You know, if they get to that point and swim in is kicking ass and Omar kicking ass, I don't know how you just say, all right, well, swan you run it down to Providence, you know? You're gonna go to plenty of HL. I don't know how that works. I don't. I don't. And again, even if rask is fresh, if those two roles are hot, they're hot. So that's something that we can't unpack. Now there's no right take right now on that situation. That was not something we will be able to accurately assess until the season gets going. We see how the goalies are playing. And again, I think if Omar or swayman starts to falter at any point, I think you're going to see every beat writer writing the story of when is rask ready to come back and when can they have that signed immediately? But it doesn't point to Omar, so I'm struggling. But we will see. We will see. Joseph lapa asked about the game of music. He said, when the game of musical chair stops, pretty quickly the centers from two C to four C already did answer that earlier. Ethan lacrosse has a good question. Who do you think will have a breakout year on both the main and the AHL roster? This year. To me, I think Charlie Coyle's a good pick for a breakout candidate on this Russia. I don't know if that's what you're looking for. If you're looking for a younger guy, it doesn't feel. I mean, maybe Trent Frederick scores some more. Maybe. I don't know. To me, it's Charlie Coyle. You know, he's elevated. He's, you know, he is someone who now has a much bigger role he's with better linemates. You know, there's not really anyone to take his job. I know he said on videos to earn it and all that stuff and I get it. Obviously, you're not going to come out Charlie Coleman come up and be like, oh yeah, I get all the second line center on the air David. No, but at the same time, I do think a guy like Coyle is set for breakout year coming back from injury, healthy, better line mates, you know, kind of a better job, a little more job security. Yeah. You know, in need of a bounce back year. So yeah, I do think he'll be the quote unquote breakout guy that you'll see another guy's Derek forbert, you know, does he 3 million is a lot for him right now? Does he live up to that? You know, I think if you want him to live up to it, he needs to be a really steady shutdown presence on that back end, who you can consistently put up against other teams top lines and have him shut them down..

"Not even in 2018, 19 were going to score 30 goals, but just a guy who's a block in a full season score 20 goals. You need to finish on that line. And I think you have to have the bras there. In his usual spot on the left side and generating chances to not only get that line going, but if you are moving him, you also need to recoup his trade value, right? So I look at that third line and it's one that I think you could see shift around quite a bit, you know, who knows maybe sneaker makes a spot there or he pushes for a spot. But I think starting the season, I think it's probably going to be the brush at the left side and then you can probably flip flop those two other guys, but I think how would I know it's probably the best bet right now? So this kind of enforces the whole idea I talked about earlier in the off season was maybe this team obviously, and you mentioned it a little bit at the start. It doesn't have that punch in the second line. But they have way more scoring depth. Way more scoring depth and that's what's going to kind of carry them throughout the season and keep them afloat as they can actually expect every single line after that first line to produce. To really actually produce. I mean, you got really no production for the third line last year, as well as the fourth line. I think this year is going to be completely and totally different. When it comes to line four, there seems like there's a lot of candidates for it. But I think there's three standouts and it comes down to where they place. And for me, it's Trent Frederick, Thomas no shack and Curtis Lazar. Those seem like the three that will start the season there. How do you see them kind of if that's also your three?.
