"That's why the money's not out there for him. It's a really interesting sign in because they continue to or visit because they continue to like this guy. They continue to kick the tires on the bar. Any time that they have an opportunity to get their hands on them, they've been interested. They've been in the winning. And we know he's not a posed. Remember, he was going to sign he said, if it wasn't for Brady, he would assign here in 2020. If Brady had called him to join him in Tampa, he would have signed here. So then again, it was a different situation. We talk about he wants the touches to get the contract and all of that. But he's not opposed to the idea in general of playing into England and playing for Bill Belichick. And by the way, he's playing Jacksonville. He's playing Tampa. He plays college football at LSU, you know, down in Louisiana. But you mentioned the running style. Leonard fournette in the winter in New England. Oh, that would be something. That's what he's something. When you look at like Leonard Laird, laguerre blunt splits by month, right? His December January splits are always insane, right? Like they're always, I mean, that's where he made his money. I just remember blunt in those colts playoff games in The Rain and the snow. Yeah, I mean, that seems like a Leonard fournette's Wheelhouse. I don't mind it as much. You know, I don't like running backs. It drives me crazy, the payer running back any sort of money, but I know the way the Patriots think. And I know the way the Patriots work. And they're gonna want four running backs on the roster that they can trust on game day in the lineup. And right now, they have two and a half. I'm counting James White as a half for the time being because we don't know about he's an unknown, yeah. So I'm saying they have two and a half without Brandon Bolden in the building. They don't have Brandon Bolden anymore. I know they signed time Montgomery. When they announced deciding, I wouldn't look too much into it, but they didn't announce him as a wide receiver. And I do think that they look at Montgomery as more of a special teams replacement for Brandon Bolden on kick coverage units than an offensive replacement for a guy like Brandon Bolden. So they need to they still need to have there needs to be another back. I don't necessarily think there needs to be another bag but the Patriots I know do. And I think they also don't really think JJ Taylor is it. He's been in the building for a while. They've never given him the opportunity at this point. So they know they're going to get another back one way or another. Whether it's the draft, whether it's Leonard fournette, whether it's another veteran running back, that's a little bit cheaper than Leonard fournette, whether it's a UDF a that's on Alex's list, they're going to have some sort of, there's going to be another running back in the mix here. Right, yeah. And yes, I max Borg, you'll have he's included in my running back preview, which will be up Thursday on 98 5 sports of dot com.

"The fastest and easiest way to wager on all the popular sports endgames, bet online, where the game starts. Moving over to some of these other visits today, one that perked up my ears certainly this morning when I saw it was Malcolm butler coming to town back for the Patriots, or at least for a visit. We have no clue if he's actually going to sign with New England. Sad out last year didn't play last year was a one year retirement reports out there long before this visit that Malcolm butler is trying to make a comeback into the NFL after sitting out the year last year. His 2020 season in Tennessee wasn't awful. It wasn't good. It wasn't awful. He gave up over 900 yards in coverage, but he played a lot. He played over a thousand snaps, had 5 picks on the year. It was not a terrible season for him in 2020. How do you feel about this? Because I think there's obviously multiple angles to it. One, at least initially, it's going to be a little bit of a circus if they sign him, right? Why is he here? The questions that Bill Belichick is going to present and open up from the reporters in the room, if he signs a guy like Malcolm butler, you know the questions about Super Bowl 52 are coming, right? Or 51, whatever it was 52. I think I got it too. Yeah. You know the questions are immediately coming. I'm sure Sean is here somebody's gonna come down the first day of training camp and start, you know, blowing up the spot with those questions. So he's bringing on those types of questions. I don't even know if Malcolm can really play anymore, so from a football standpoint, I'm not sure he's really worth it. But it feels like they're at this point with corner, where they have to throw some veterans. Like I said earlier where the garlic Eric flowers, you got to throw some veterans in the hat and see if one of these guys stick, right? And Malcolm butler kind of feels like another one of those types of guys. Yeah. And again, they just need that kind of player. The cupboards bear it corners. It's not just about needing a number one corner. You need.

"And he would say to the group of us right to our faces, we view Isaiah as a tackle. Period, right? And he's never practiced at any capacity other than when they shuffle up the line, which they do with everybody, right? Just have guys get some reps in other places at times. They've never really tried him at guard. He's played, I think, one game in his entire NFL career at guard, and that was it. He's been at left tackle for the rest of his career. They're not moving him in year 5 on his 5th year option. After all this time, they're not sitting in the back and saying, now he's a guard, right? I don't know why we don't know that he would do that. You might run into some issues where he might then turn around and say, well, you could trade me. I'm not going to play guard, you can trade me, 'cause he's in a contract here. He wants to get paid like a tackle. People also, I think a lot of the issues with win and in this in itself is an accurate assessment. I think one of wins biggest shortcomings is just as availability. He's been serviceable. He's not in all pro, but he's a good left taco when he's on the field. One of the biggest issues has been injuries, moving him into guard is only going to make that worse. It's a more physical position. So if you're worried about him staying on the field, moving him into guard is not the answer. It's just, you're not solving moving Isaiah went into guard again. They could theoretically do it. Yeah. But it's not solving any of the problems you think it's solving. I don't know that it's solving any problems. But certainly not solving wins biggest issues as a player are not erased by moving him into guard. I think what he struggles with that tackle, he's going to struggle with more so on the interior. If you think they should upgrade at left tackle, that's a conversation we can have. And we will have when we start getting into the draft stuff. Like, that's a fair conversation. Sure. Moving to guard isn't a part of that conversation. They're going to upgrade a left tackle they're not. If they bring in a new left tackle, wouldn't just move to the bench. He's not going to move inside. Yeah, I think these are two different conversations we're having. One is, do they need to operate real quick in the chat? So yes, when has zero positional flexibility? Correct. Yeah. Yes, he's a tackle. One of the conversations is the Patriots need to have a long-term plan and potentially upgrade at left tackle. That's one conversation that we're having. Right..

"I'm Evan Lazar, joined as always by Alex barth and doing a pod today because there is actually some patriots news to report and to discuss the Patriots making assigning this morning bringing back offensive tackle Trent Brown. We'll talk about how the offensive line is going to shake out. If we like the brown signing, how the rest of the line is going to look, some targets that maybe they could go after. And the Patriots also hosted officially three people on a visit, but unofficially four as multiple reports have said that Malcolm butler was also in town today. So Ryan Bates Leonard fournette and Josh Dobbs, who was the one surprised that was not reported on were in Foxborough for a free age and visit as was Malcolm butler earlier today. So a lot going on in patriot land kind of seems like they decided to sit out the first week of free agency for the most part and now this is when they're going to get down to the nitty Gritty and start doing some work. Let's start with the official signing first though Alex Trent Brown back on a two year contract felt like after layout Colin signed with the bangles yesterday that the Patriots then pivoted back to Brown and made this thing happen with trend who was out in Seattle and getting courted by the Seahawks. He ends up coming back to the Patriots. It's where he's played his best ball. The Patriots have certainly been a better team with him on the field, but this doesn't come without some injury risk. And I don't think that you can put all your eggs in the Trent Brown basket just because of his recent injury history. Sure, but I ultimately really like the deal. We still haven't gotten the money on it, have we? No, no, I miss that. No, okay. But yeah, no, they need it. You don't want to have to overhaul your offensive line. That's another starter coming back. I said this on whenever the last show we did was Thursday. I wanted whoever they signed at right tackle on a multiyear deal because I think having to replace two tackles next off season with win on a contract year. That's a very tall task. If Brown gets hurt, it doesn't matter if it's a one or two year deal. If he gets hurt, you replace him next year anyway. If he stays healthy, now you don't have to worry about it. So we have to wait and see the money. I would it Collins got what, like, 10 million? Yeah. Three or 30 million max value. So I would imagine it's something between what two 15 and two 18 for Trent Brown somewhere in that range, depending on how much of a hometown discount, he was only given the Patriots, but that's about right. First starting right tackle, that's a pretty good deal, even with his injury history that's about right..

"Is go through the, you know, we call it a too deep, which is essentially the depth chart, right? What positions they put a red mark or highlight where they don't have a starter? Right tack, either right tackler left guard is highlighted right now. You know, if whatever you want to do with Michael and that's going to be a need, that's going to be a big need. It's not going to be a cheap need to fill primary positions on the offensive line, especially if they're going to fill out a tackle, yeah, that's now a question. So you're optimistic dog in brown coming back because I feel like most of the consensus thinking has been that he could go else when I try to chase a contract. Yeah, I'm pretty optimistic that he comes back because of all the things that he said during the season last year. And I get that money talks and eventually a patriots are going to have to shell out a competitive contract in order to keep him here. But the way I see it is that Trent Brown, numerous times, said that he personally feels comfortable playing for the Patriots. And that season that he spent with the two seasons he spent with the Vegas raiders, he was in a pretty dark place with the Raiders. I mean, a lot of things were happening off the field for him too with his brother and things like that. And his own personal health and there were other variables. That played into that. But I think for the most part, he felt like a fish out of water when he was in Vegas. And I don't see even if he chases the money. Elsewhere and money is obviously a great thing to have. I don't see necessarily him being a 100% comfortable with being elsewhere. At this point. And I do think that he would take a little bit more of a team friendly deal. You have to remember the Raiders, they gave him a lot of guaranteed money on that contract he signed. So he's sort of already made that money, right? He's already gotten right back once before. So it's not like he's never gotten paid. I think there is a chance that the Patriots could get Trent Brown to come back on a more team friendly deal..

"Trent Brown was I tweeted this yesterday when I was watching the offense on the all 22, it was a Trent Brown highlight reel. From start to finish. Pancake after pancake, moving guys 8, ten yards off the line. You don't move NFL defensive ends or defensive tackles ten yards off the line of scrim. You see that on college tape, but you don't see that on NFL tape. And that's what trend Brandon Shaq mason were doing next to each other on Sunday. That was an absolute if you love offensive line play like I do and you love trenches and plays in the line of scrimmage, watching number 77 block on Sunday was a thing of beauty. I just can't. I can imagine Dante's Carnegie and was sitting on his couch watching that game on Sunday, just having a great time. Because they were just going to town. I mean, it was crazy how far they were moving that brand's front off the line. Let's talk about let's give them their kudos, but we also got to talk about Mike on Wendy being the other now too. Well, so just a quick another quick addition on the offensive line before we talk about it when I thought we already talked a little bit about how much success they had in the screen game, right? Yeah. David Andrews gardening. Just gardening. Just planting linebackers in the turf all day. I mean, he was able to win one to Ted character. He got a couple. Yeah, the block on Brandon Bolden's third down screen. It was early on in the game, gained 20 yards. Andrews and Ted Keras both had great blocks on that screen. And then Isaiah win absolutely pancake the defensive back on a wide receiver screen to kind of porn. And I feel bad for that guy. He just kind of laid down on the ground and was like, ouch, you know, you could just see the pain on the tape, but I mean, heavy hard hitting, just physical take it to them, really. It was a take it to them type of game for the offensive line. Yeah, they were they were really good. They were really good and miles Garrett got the sack sure. 12 Saxon on games..

"Clean. Yeah. And so if you're dealing with miles Garrett, he's going through a setup and this can span drives, right? This can span multiple drives. So he's getting Isaiah wins set up. And he's getting him set up. He's getting him set up. And then he's getting ready to go for the finisher. And okay, now here's Trent Brown. So now you've got to go back right now. You've got to go back to square one and start to set up again. So again, we're getting way out of the box here. This is great. Very hypothetical, but honestly, the best segments on the show are when we talk big picture hypothetical football. So maybe maybe we see it. I don't know. I would love to see something different. That's all I'm saying whether it's switching those guys out and we're talking a lot about trend Brown. I don't know if Jeff Brown is going to be activated for this game on Sunday, but the fact that he was out there for the padded session on Wednesday. And there is some optimism, right? There's some growing optimism that he's gonna be bad. At some point, whether it's this week next week, we don't really know. But clearly, he's out there for a reason. And clearly, they feel like he's going to be able to come back. But I wanted to hit on with Trent Brown and I want to move on to the running backs as well. Wit Trent Brown I'm kind of torn on this about basically it's a conversation of do you go with the hot hands? Do you go with what's working, or do you go for the higher ceiling offensive line? Clearly, the highest ceiling that the Patriots have on the offensive line is to go back to the line that they planned on having going into the season with Trent Brown at right tackle and on Wendy wagga guard and the other three guys and their same spots. But this line with Keras in the starting lineup and on wendo back to right tackle has really spearheaded a much better offensive performance from the line for the last month or so, right? Really, since Isaiah win and on when you got over the COVID thing, the last three games, the line play has been significantly better in both phases as in past protection and in run blocking. So it's a little bit like a hockey team, right? Where the backup goalie gets hot, right? The starting goal is if there's no winner. But the backup goalie gets hot. Do you go back to the starter? Or do you keep the backup in there to keep it rolling? It's a tough decision because I think this is ultimately this is a huge decision for this team of whether or not to shake it up again, right? Because you finally found a combination of 5 that is working that's now had about a month of practice together is building some continuity together and some chemistry together. And now we're going to shake the whole thing up again. Well, I mean, if they're going to use 6 lime in this week and the buys and we need to answer that question, right? I mean, I think it just the potential upside with Trent Brown. I think you have to try it. Remember the first drive of the season. If you go for like 34 yards off right tackle and it was just everybody knew it was coming and they still did it. I think the upside of the running game with brown healthy is worth giving it a shot. Now it's a balance of, okay, how long are you gonna try this versus how short of a leash are you gonna give it? And that's, you know, we go back and forth. It's not even a conversation. It's just like a hypothetical question, but I do think it's worth at least giving it a shot..

"Bet online dot AG. A return to practice a big one for the Patriots with a big fellow as number 77 Trent Brown was back at patriots practice on Wednesday. This means his 21 day clock to return off injured reserve has officially begun Brown dealing with that calf injury. He hasn't played in a game for the Patriots since week one, where he played exactly one series left the game against the Miami Dolphins and we haven't seen him since until Wednesday. Now Brown is not technically on the active roster just yet, remember he's still on injured reserve until the team activates him to the 53 man roster, so he does not need to be listed on the injury report. On Wednesday's injury report, the patch list 5 players as non participants linebacker Matt judon did not participate in Wednesday's session, but that was due to the birth of his child early on Wednesday morning. The four others, though, that mist practice did miss practice due to injury, linebacker, Jamie Collins, running back Damien Harris, and reminder Stevenson and wide receiver gunner O schelsky. Stevenson Harris and osha dealing with concussions. Now the hope is, according to a league source at patriots running back, reminder Stevenson will clear concussion protocol in time to play on Sunday. So there is some optimism that at least Stevenson will be ready to go by Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. The Patriots list, a slew of others as limited as we expect this time of year. But the pat's missing those four players and the two running backs is gonna be critical in this game against miles Garrett and Davey and Clowney in a very good Cleveland Browns defensive front will continue to monitor that moving forward. As for the Odell Beckham junior sweepstakes, we're still waiting to decide here what OBJ has decided and where he will play his football for the remainder of the season. The Patriots remain in the hunt for OBJ, according to various reports, but no official decision yet from Beckham on where he will play next. So you can keep it right here on patriots press pass. We will have you covered with all the Odell Beckham junior news the injury news for the Patriots moving forward and will continue to monitor whether or not tackled Trent Brown will be activated to the 53 man roster. "Partners at bet online dot AG. The Patriots have officially ruled out starting offensive lineman Trent Brown and Shaq mason for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, Brown, still dealing with that cap injury that will now hold him out for a fourth consecutive game and a big right tackle has only played one series in the season opener against the Miami Dolphins, the entire season. So brown's still dealing with that cat issue. He has already been ruled out for Sunday's game as has mason who is dealing with an abdomen problem that came up in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, neither practiced all week long, both ruled out for Sunday's game, along with mason and brown, the Patriots have also ruled out rookie defensive back, Shawn wade due to a concussion and list 8 other players as questionable for Sunday's game. Linebacker jawan Bentley, defensive back Cody Davis, defensive back Kyle, duggar, kicker Nick folk cornerback, Jon Jones, DB Jalen mills, linebacker, Ronnie Perkins and linebacker Kyle van noy, round out the injury report for the Patriots and just as a reminder, the two patriots on the COVID-19 reserve list, Isaiah win and Mike on winning do not need to be on the official injury report due to the fact that they are on COVID-19 reserve. So it doesn't sound like the Patriots will have win or on when you for Sunday's game either meaning the Pats will be down four starting offensive linemen against the Houston Texans on Sunday. Texans team that is one in three that hasn't won a game without Tyrod Taylor under center yet this season. Well, this game could be a lot closer than a lot of us thought it would be due to the Patriots health on the offensive line. So no Brown, no mason for the Patriots offensive line, not looking good for win and on when you getting off the COVID-19 reserve list either an 8 other patriots questionable for Sunday's game against the Texans. We will have.

"Our exclusive wagering partners, bet online dot AG. The Patriots return to the practice field on Wednesday to begin their preparations for their week three matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday and patriots fans. You will not want to hear this on the injury report on Wednesday afternoon, linebacker, Matt judon did not participate in Wednesday's practice due to a knee injury, it's uncertain at this time, whether this is a long-term issue for judean, but his status for Sunday is certainly up in the air. A knee issue. He played the entire game against the New York Jets popped up on the injury report on Wednesday with this injury. We went down this road last week with Trent Brown and Kyle van noy, Brown, left the game against Miami. So a little bit of a different situation. Van noy with that throat issue was a full participant in Wednesday's session, but last week, a surprise DNP on Wednesday didn't play in the game on Sunday. So we will continue to monitor judon situation moving forward. Trent Brown speaking of Trent Brown, the big red tackle was limited in practice on Wednesday with that calf issue running back Damien Harris also joining him on the injury report as a limited with a finger issue. And we spoke to patriot center David Andrews after practice on Wednesday and he mentioned that star pass rusher cam Jordan for the New Orleans Saints tend to line up over the right side of the offensive line. So Trent brown's injury, a massive story line here in this game if it's just in her own and yasir Durant again this week going up against cam Jordan. The Patriots are going to have to help to that side quite frequently in order to contain a very talented pass rusher in New Orleans. Now we also spoke to patriots head coach Bill Belichick on Wednesday morning Belichick mentioning right off the top of his press conference at the Patriots are a little bit unfamiliar with New Orleans. They haven't seen them since the 2017 season. The quarterback of the Patriots that day of course was Tom Brady, the quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees, new cubes, new personnel on both sides of the football for the Patriots in the saints four years later. Same head coaches, though, but Belichick imagining. We're not very familiar with their personnel. We're not very familiar with their scheme. So a lot of work to do for the Patriots and their coaching staff this week. One player that we know the Patriots will have their eye on when New Orleans has the ball, start running back Alvin Kamara. Here's what the Patriots head coach had to say about chimera on Sunday. He does everything well. Very good in the passing game. You know, his production has been phenomenal. 59 touchdowns or whatever it is and. His yards and skirmish have been very tough for since he's been in the league. So he's got good speed, quickness, stuff to tackle, good vision. Personal guy get involved different ways. And they do. And then he produces with it. This guy got to keep your eye on at all times. Plays all three downs. It's always in there. "Greg, the dolphins game. It's in the past. We've burned the film. We're moving out of the jets, the second divisional game in as many weeks to kick off this season before we get to the jets game, though. Let's talk about some of the news. Regarding the Patriots, what's been happening over the last couple of days? Let's start with Trent Brown. He was injured against the dolphins. It's a calf. He's not been at practice. What do you make of it? I don't think it's good. Nick that he wasn't out there that normally when you have, let's say like a minor injury or something like that, some sort of soft tissue, lower body type of thing. Normally the guys are out of practice, maybe riding the bike, something like that, keep them warm, nothing that stresses them too much keeping them in shape. That Trent Brown, I was out of practice yesterday that Trump Brown wasn't on the practice field, not a great sign. I mean, look, I'm not going to say that means he's done and they need to think about putting him on in season IR for three weeks or anything like that. Look, considering his recent history with the Raiders, he had a calf injury. I think it's the same calf. And he was basically hit and miss, like every week. And he wouldn't practice very much. The Raiders, it caused a lot of drama with the Raiders. Probably part of the reason why he was eager to leave there. I think the Raiders thought that at times he could practice and play Trent thought otherwise. I don't know which way to come down on that. I can only judge what he's done since he's been back here. And I think everybody understands how I feel about tremendous. He's been back here. You know, he, from day one, he's been great. And to me, he was my preseason team MVP because I thought he had the ability to help the team at right tackle, be basically all pro right tackle, fill in at left tackle if needed. And he's done everything. Even Belichick talked about his leadership, he was more mature this time around. And then to come out and play one series and then he has this calf injury, which caused so much drama with the Raiders. You have to be somewhat alarmed.

Top 10 players signed by Patriots

"Talk about the Patriots. The the Patriots grabbed everybody's attention by making move after move after move after move. Like we're watching it over agency going off. How many people are going to bring in its kind of unbelievable how many starters they've added? And so I count they added ten players that I think are very very significant to their team next year. In fact, I would say pretty clearly the Patriots are back and a lot of people saw this coming, you know, but they are going to be a force in the NFL next year here is my list my nerdy list of the ten players the top players. They added that are very significant to their roster next year. The first two are massive. It will reshape the entire Patriots offense. They added two tight ends Johnny Smith and Ed Hunter Henry. To Johnny Smith signed from Tennessee. He signed a four year deal worth up to fifty million dollars. That's Thirty one point two five million dollars guaranteed and he's only twenty-four years old. So that's Monday. That's a really gigantic Marquis franchise player. He cited the reason why it came to New England is cuz he loves Bill Belichick. He's got great respect for him. And I want to point out of all the everybody I'm about to talk about these shows to be in New England Bill Belichick got his kind of guys who sought out New England wanted to be there and wanted to work hard and win a Superbowl. I think it matters. It's very very exciting. These are not with Josh Gordon's or what's the other example Phillip Dorsett who they made a move for and they're not really like that. You think they fit they don't work out know. These are guys who all chose to be in New England who wanted to win a Superbowl. I really want to win a Superbowl. These guys went out of their way to be New England now the other tight and they brought in With twenty-six-year-old tight end Hunter Henry from the LA Chargers got a three-year deal twenty-five million dollars guaranteed. It's worth up to thirty seven point five million dollars total if he meets all those incentives. They also added two wide receivers the Patriots brought in Nelson agholor to a you got a two year twenty six million dollar contract East twelve years old. Now a lot of people do not like this move and I I get it Nelson agholor is not the most flashy player in the NFL but I think if it's very well with Cam Newton, he's good at he's not going up and getting the ball. He's got good hands did some stuff of the Raiders that I think deserves your attention go watch what he did with the Raiders and I just I'm like, huh a lot of good plays. Okay. I understand. I see the potential Bill Belichick and the Patriots would see and Nelson agholor go will give the guy a good contract, especially considering the Patriots have like our desolate at wide receiver. They need help. They got home. Who is awesome but he can't do everything by himself from the slot. They have n'keal Harry who n'keal Harry. I I think he's going to pop. I think he's going to progress and keep getting better. But she's not a number one right now. So on top of the page where it's also added Kendrick Bourne guy from my local area actually went to Eastern Washington University 25 years old. He's coming from the San Francisco 49ers. He got a three year deal worth twenty two point five million dollars. Now another thing the Patriots did they also added they signed Center Ted carriages and they traded for tackle Trent Brown. So this is the new Patriots offense right now. They've receivers Nelson agholor, Julian Edelman Kendrick born and kill hair is its own nuclear Aguilera. I'm doing my best. It's a hard game to say. They also have Sony Michelle running backs for any receivers Sony Michelle at running back and improved offensive line. Cam Newton at quarterback who I get why people doubt Cam? He's a former NFL MVP and with when you put cams Talent with a lot of weapons including two outstanding tight ends Hunter Henry Smith, right man. I'll tell you what I look at the Patriots offense and think two things immediately number one. Everything is going to run through their brand new Titans. Their entire offense now is probably going to drive down the seams of the field right up the middle. They're going to use our tents heavily lot of play-action again. I am scheme wise things will look a lot like the page words did back in the day when they had drunk and Aaron Hernandez together to start tight ends. Now number two. I feel very very confident with Cam Newton as the Patriots quarterback and it surprised me but I want to remind you that two years ago. Tom Brady was the page word starting quarterback and did basically nothing and the reason was there were no weapons there. He kept running into the same brick wall. His receivers weren't good enough. So, how can I think you and I would both agree. I like Cam Newton Tom Brady's a better quarterback than Cam Newton. So my point is if Tom Brady couldn't make it work with New England's roster. How was Cam Newton supposed to succeed? He was set up to fail will now Cam Newton's being given weapons is being set up to do. Well, I'm excited man. He's a former NFL MVP, he's hungry. I I personally believe Cam Newton's going to have an awesome year and it really is going to make extended one-year deal with like it was like three and a half million dollars with a bunch of incentives. I honestly think we're gonna look back at his contract at the end of next year and go. Can you believe the deal they got on Camden he played so well for no money. I really think he's he's a guy who can didn't play well enough wage. Last year to earn a new gigantic contract. So he's going to have to show what he can do this year and maybe earn more money next year but I think cam is poised to do very very well and make a lot of money and win a lot of games in New England

"In the backfield one place and have them in the slot the next play then he's got his hand in the dirt his life and he's not going to do that type of stuff. Here's the thing. I feel like you can use a line back or not. Every linebacker. You can use a linebacker to cover John Schmidt. I don't like some teams can maybe not every team has that line back? Linebackers and Lee who can I think with Hunter Henry that's a much tougher task. I think you need the extra defensive back on the field to cover Hunter Henry and if you can get teams into five or six defensive back sets and then you'll have this massive offensive line. Like we talked about the beginning and Sony Michelle and Damien Harris who want to run downhill and crack skulls. You really going to kind of put defenses in a tough spot between do we want the extra body out there for a while Henry or do we want the extra body in there to deal with this massive offensive line power Run game and can can become a part of that if he comes back and having cameras the big body in the backfield. So I like again the match up maybe play to play Johnny Smith is tougher, but the overall gameplan match up in the Personnel match up in the Personnel mismatches that Hunter Henry gives you like I look at that especially now with this is Josh Brown move and like you talked about the direction they seem to be heading in and I get really excited by that. So that's that's why I Mentor happy. I understand where everybody is coming from with under entered the thing that concerns me the most about Hunter Henry is the durability wage. Right. Is he going to be able to stay healthy eat healthy and maybe that's we've talked about in the past that might be the Chargers trading staff and that's been a disaster there in LA or San Diego wherever they've been over the years, but she has had some injury concerns and to me Hunter Henry is your prototypical white I-10 right? He's going to put his hand in the dirt. He's going to run option routes. He's going to run white why option was his number one route in La I go up to the top of the route break it off, whichever direction the defender is not in. It's the Jason Witten route, right? Jason Williams. Probably going to make the Hall of Fame off of that one play Kronk's route was the Crosser or the owner about behind their linebacker level or the seem right under Henry Morgan option guy at the top of the road with his quickness. So there's some you know translation there certainly into their their thoughts their offense with that role, but Donna Smith just the athleticism the versatility just really speaks to me it does if somebody that I think is going to be for Josh McDaniels. That's that's someone that home Really scheme up, whereas with Hunter Henry you kind of need to alter and you kind of need to say okay. This is going to be his role because this is what he does best, right, you know, apparently someone that you're going to break out the month for sure Johnny Smith isn't a bad option. I just think they need talent and and you know head-to-head who's the more talented player. I think it's Hunter Henry lad this I get the durability concerns and on normally the first one mentioning that I didn't talking about non-stop The Coop low, but his games played over five years fifteen fourteen..

"Play to find the guy's whole career and then he's kind of bounced around the league since the problem is that the stage couldn't pay him originally cuz they wanted to pay Michael Thomas. They couldn't pay him. Originally. They traded the Patriots dangerous weren't going to pay him cuz they don't pay anybody. So they trade him to the Rams the Rams side him to this gross contract that again. He's a good player, but he was never going to be worth that contract. So he gets trading around the league two teams who just kind of are willing to spend for a year to bolster their receiver Corps and give it a shot. Now that contracts kind of come back down to earth. It's more in line with with his worth and I can get it for next to nothing cuz the Texans are dumb. So, you know go get them. I think he'd be a great fit. If you put put speed on one side in terms of Brandin Cooks. If you put size on the other in terms of Corey Davis you go out you get one of those slots High performers in the draft. You have to Kobe Myers is kind of a wild card who can move between all three roles and then you figure out the tight end that's like a pretty good offense. Yeah, you know, I mean just have to figure out the quarterback but I you know, you have all the pieces that's at pass-catcher where you have a pretty decent offense there. Yeah. No, I really like it. And if they do go that route that maybe that does open them up to somebody more like a Jew Jew who is your life and mostly inside and be that I called in the power slot. That's kind of what that mold is like big slot. Yep Godwin, you know, those types of guys are playing seventy 80% of their snaps inside and kind of playing as almost like a detached. I tend essentially in that role. Let's talk about the tight ends though because none of these tight ends got tagged which I think was a little bit of a surprise to me because the tag number for tight ends is not very high birth. Hunter Henry and Johnny Smith. Neither one of those guys got tagged. They're both hitting the open market..

"They're both talented. They're both you know they. They both can make plays right. There's no question about one hundred hundred more than smith. You know up until this point. I'm not surprised neither got franchised Don't need a one got the tag. I'm not surprised because while they're good they're tight ends man like i don't think teams she get caught up in that and wrapped up in it. If they want to resign the the they could just recite them. They don't got a franchise tag. That tight ends Where they end up does matter They will both Be top you know. Top tight end targets. They let any good place no question because we know the they're both talented. We've seen them do it. We know the potential they have so these guys that you definitely keep an eye on depending on where they go right now. Someone says hey man that didn't tied on what's going to happen with him. It's hard to acquire them. You know in that gray area sometimes because the person who has them on tv now was rosser. There was gonna see go so right now trying to acquire them. It's not really worth it for you if you're super super interested in them and you just want to wait so where they land that you can go after them on. It's hard to pursue them right now that that's my opinion but a big trade offer. It never hurt so go train offer if you like them So those are the The franchise tag players. I felt were important. Obviously players like dak and stuff avoided this whole thing. Which again like. I talked about last episode cowboy fans. Happy you avoid this whole franchise tag matter For dak prescott just pushed the player in a right to me. It puts players at ease at comfort. And again there there are some fantasy analysts and experts out there who you i don't care about. You know this kind of stuff. I don't i don't think about whether the guys franchise tag. What contract looks like whether i care. He's happier nodar or confident or not insecure or not. I do care about variables when it comes to fantasy. I definitely put it in. Play when i'm doing my rankings and when i'm thinking about draft certain players i definitely considers a fight this and dak being on a brand new contracting again paid to me. That's a major win for cowboy fans and fantasy dynasty fans who have dak on their team or looking to acquire him That puts me all in undocked for sure The other news. And i wanted to hit on really quickly Says the franchise tag. You know news dominated. The airwaves was The raiders you guys know big raider fan they trade they. They've been cutting guys left and right lamarcus. Joyner got cut Gabe jackson got cut a few other guys. Cut something notable today trent brown. The you know pro bowl top you know. Left tackle offensive tackle in the entire. Nfl when the top guys on they traded him back to the patriots this interesting he was unhappy clearly The raiders were unhappy clearly because he's barely played so even while the raiders had like this dominant offense align at times. Trent brown was even playing for them. Sometimes you know last year. I feel like he barely played due to injuries and everything else. So the raiders weren't appreciate the effort. They felt like he could push through some of that probably. They felt like he was out of shape. You know Might may i came out and said that that when he's in shape and healthy is one of the best hackles ofo ball when he's not he's no good for you so My assumption is my guess of. I had to predict out. Trent brown will be entirely healthy next year. Because he's a patriot now and so he will not do injury concerns. He won't have all these issues because he's happy because he thinks he's on a winning team. No surprise surprise. Trent brown the patriots wearing good last year. The patriots. don't even have a quarterback sir. They don't if he can't come back. That's great but bro. You don't even know your protection. You don't even know how this even the plow because they didn't play out so hot last year now another get a lot of players back that You know took a year off because of covid. I fully assume. Bill belichick is anna. Start to repair this team. The best he can But you know the they're left guard go. I believe they decided to franchise tag him. That'll be interesting. But this always you know as a raiders fan. This kind of stuff always annoys me because players leave the traded with ever. They go to another team. Take the pay cut because he was getting paid. More with the raiders. That was annoys move. Obviously the raiders always play pay. You know a bonus they always have to pay up compared to other teams especially a successful team like the patriots so right so okay that comes with the territory. Donate to play the game. I respect that. And then you know. I hate when these guys on twitter and they started. Tweet tweeting my. They're so happy so excited. It gives me those antonio brown vibes when he left the raiders. So yeah that's it's frustrating but listen term row with some non baloch patriots at which But it's raiders all day so my bias is always gonna to through on that however. Just speak on the raiders situations because this does affect josh jacobs derek. Carr you're going to go. the raiders. Just lost trent brown people love to not josh. Jacobs say they look for any outlet. He can to knock josh jacobs waiting for honestly. And so you're going to have the haters. Come out of there. The raiders brown. They just lost a tight. One atop tackle football bro. They didn't let him play last year. So whatever you seen last year from the raiders. They give repeat all that they repeated or do better because he didn't affect the offense. I share so that they don't even try to bring that. So that's not going to matter For the raiders for the patriots is obviously a win right. They upgrade their line in terms of briley. Joe thune so we'll see how that affects the team. But you know adam to turn brown. If he's healthy doesn't hurt your team. Obviously so this should help the yield a line for the patriots and everyone that you're worried about over there as far as quarterbacks the run running-backs all that good stuff on the raiders with listen a lot of Players recently cut in this cap down considerably to get the Pretty pretty well under it. Not one of the leaders by any means but pretty well under the had that money for the draft and they want to get a little active free agency. I'm curious what they do If it's a wide receiver they go after if it's offensive line hope for the cheaper If it's defensive help infrequency because obviously we all know their defense horrible We'll see how it plays out. But just talking about trent brown and the raiders. It affects none. There's nothing lost here. So if anyone tries to throw that out there josh was suffering carson suffer because an attorney brown let them know trim brownian play last year so it don't matter Other than that guy's franchise tag was a big news. Make sure again. You adjust accordingly dynasty twenty four seven operation three hundred sixty five days a year. You cannot sleep when i'm offers. "Only you're getting blocked like that is no way to treat somebody else so I will say this. You know, there's a general misunderstanding between people that listen and read versus the people that writes and talk and and here's the here's the dispatch, you know, here's the disconnect between those two sides. You know, it is our job to try to provide content come up with different ideas come up with opinions. That's how we get paid. That's how we make a living if you are somebody who is not in the media business and I appreciate and respect all of you who listen to this podcast and have listened to me at 98.5 and e m e s p n all these other places, you know, I appreciate you because you're the reason why I have a job, but you have to hopefully understand that for us in the media. We just thought they all right. We like this guy and you know stick with that as being the opinion for the next 3 months. There is an offseason we have to come up. I saw people busting Jeff house balls, you know down. Only like a month or two ago like oh, we're already at this point and I thought Jeff had a perfect response to it. And I think he does a great job on Twitter responding to some people. I really do. I appreciate and respect the hell out of Jeff hop in Jeff at one point said, you know, listen man. I'm just trying to figure this out like everybody else. So when we talk about the Patriots quarterback position the truth is dead. None of us have been in this area for this position in a long time in last offseason. We try to figure out what they were going to do and it's our job to try to figure out how the Patriots are going to address them first question. And one of the ways that we do that is taking an educated guess whether it's from Intel or information you get like Greg does from his sources and share that with the people in Iraq instead of the take committed and all of that. I would just wish that some people that consume this stuff and you can do what you want. You know, you are who you are but I would just wish that you know, the people that immediately go to the club. Committed stuff absorb the opinion take it for what it's worth enjoy it and then move on if you disagree with it, then you disagree with it. Who cares we all have opinions like everybody else, you know, they're like buttholes. Everybody's got them. Everybody else thinks the other one stinks. That's just the way it is, right. So, you know, I just that's why we try to provide the content and you know, hey, if you don't like Greg writing about Gardner Minshew guess what you have the freedom to not click on the story in wait until Greg writes about another quarterback and then click on that story and enjoy life and take it for what it is. I don't know maybe I'm just optimistic. I'm on schedule to get my first vaccine shot today. So I'm going to prove it. Yeah, I'm in a pretty good mood. Greg is a little under the weather. He's a little salty. I think we talked a lot about a lot in this podcast and hopefully people enjoy it. I mean, we've got Florio versus Bedard beef which I love we've got Bedard versus some of the readers FPS Jason beef with them. I love that we gave you our takes on the trade. We gave you our takes on Jimmy G. We were on The Dan Patrick potholes. We talked buttholes and how they stay. We are going worldwide with this poem. "Me that says Cam Newton, you know, so at least it doesn't eliminate Cam Newton. So, you know, that's sort of where I am on Trent Browns the downside you said what's the downside? It's the money. I want to know what the money is if it's 11 million dollars and your trust in this guy who's countered in the last two places that he's been outside of New England to be a good person and to play for a coach code for positional coaches that he's never coached played for em. Yeah, I have concerns. But again, I want to go back to my general point which is I'm not ready to say one way or the other on this because I think this is a precursor to other moves, you know win could be traded with a he's got a fifth year option coming up that could appeal to somebody too and he could be tagged and traded Mason could be traded and and Tunis could be tagged in signed here and makes you should be part of a deal. So I think if my source is correct, and he usually does not. Text cryptically like that unless it means something I'm ready to to wait on this deal a bit, but I'm a little pessimistic. Well, I'm actually I'm in last one one last thing. Sorry, Nick, okay. it's just it's just all right, the great aggressive off season of Bill Belichick is An offense one. I mean that's how it starts. It's just funny to me that that's what and look I love offensive lineman. Hopefully, it makes the offensive line great and it's part of this, you know, whole fabric of money that they make and this is just the first sort of you know appetizer to what's to come but it's just typical that you know, they they have all this money. They they're going to be aggressive and they took them 11 million dollars on Trent Brown who might be a right tackle who you could probably find a right tackle elsewhere. So I just I just find that funny. I feel like you're a little bit extra salty today. Because you're a little under the weather. I look at this again, you know to we got to wait on the incentives. I am intrigued by your guys text. I wonder what the domino effect is going to be as far as starting the offseason with an offensive lineman. Let's look at who's realistically available and you know right now it's not like there's this great offensive player that we know that is available. To make a move. So you start with the inside out you start to address things that you can address. It's rather obvious that Belichick feels like there's some movement here on the offensive line. If he's not going to me back you have to replace him somehow. So again, I think it makes sense whether it's win or it's on one who who gets moved to the guard position. It makes some sense to me. And as far as the money, I mean frankly Marcus Cannon hasn't been the same guy the last two years. We've seen him play. He just sat out last season, I would not be surprised if he's gone if he's just cut straight up. So if you're telling me that Trent Brown is going to make about five million.

"This is the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick cattles. Greg we actually have some news this morning. Yes, we have off-season Patriots news. Let's get it started right now a trade involving the Raiders and the Patriots the the Patriots send a fifth-round pick to the Raiders for Trent Brown and a seventh-round pick. I believe the seventh round pick is in twenty twenty-two whatever. Both of them are. Both of them are so you've got a you've got a late pick swap here in the Patriots have reworked the contract of Trent Brown. It's now going to be a one-year deal up to and that's a key phrase here up to 11 million dollars and I saw your reaction the email and your reaction to the straightest man. Yeah, Nick. Let me just say my my takes evolving and I think it's going to need to evolve for every month everybody and the first of all before I get going if I sound a little choppy or send a little bit weird. I am a little bit under the weather, but you know, I'm just that tough now I'm going to show up. All down but he's going to let it rip. I heard Trent Brown was coming back. We know you know that guy doesn't you know, fake injuries or anything like that to take, you know any time off with the Niners of the Raiders or anything off 45 seconds in and throwing bombs. So so this is going to be an evolving conversation Nick between you and I but let me let me start here. Okay? Yeah, my my initial reaction is you know, okay. Well, where is he playing number one? How is the money structured? All right, if he's a left tackle, what does that mean about Isaiah Wynn wage, if that means that he's playing left tackle for Isaiah Wynn, that means the complete 2018 NFL draft was horrendous. I mean, you know, so so they spent a birth and pick and did they trade up for sorry. My wife is the darts phone's going crazy. This one's just my wife so.

NFL cuts expected to be a ‘massacre,’ ‘bloodbath’ next week

"We are on the fringe. We're nearing free agency. Actually just read a very interesting to tweet about a nfl coach. Saying that next week was gonna be a bloodbath. with the cap situation Do the covid that it's going to be a very interesting year. A lot of people are going to be getting cut prior to free agency to free up room. So we'll see what happens In you know the free agents were talking about might not even be like the big guys you know we end up signing at the end of the day so one big name we have been talking about and you specifically talked about this guy. Quite a bit is joni From new england the patriots are not going to use the franchise on him again. They can't do it. They they're cap situation would allow forward. I believe but with what you end up making the second time around. It really doesn't make any sense to them. As i was listening to boston. Sports radio their day like they were talking about that. Very topic so loonies. He's a big name. being fans. Love is a big often. Attack was out there And they've got to think about bringing their own guys. Back to william jackson in kara lawson entering free agency. So that's a big big names in some big money right there. What what can really afford to do. So that you you hit the list You hit you hit the big players. They're they have of course two big guys. Internally that are scheduled to be free agents in jackson and lawson one of those may end up getting the franchise tag. Probably the non-exclusive. If i had a bad at this point i'd probably say it's carl lawson and and we don't know the exact figures yet but they'll come out soon what the values will be But it's based position and since deandre get paid a little bit more than corners. Speed deanne tag is going to be a little higher. But i think that's a cost of the bengals are willing to take just to avoid the risk of losing carl. Potentially at an already weakened spot you know masterpass russia's spin has been existent Especially last year And i think room on bengals dot com had a couple of comments today from an article today saying they're looking to shore up the pass rush and he didn't mention actually edge rusher cement of course interior pressure which was good to see liu mentioned and we can talk about some interior linemen. Who are going to be on the market that could provide some interior. Pass rush to collapse the pocket if you will but to your question about what. They can't afford i. There is a way for them to structure these contracts with the amount of space that they have available. Of course we don't know what official cap will be just like we don't know what the tag amounts are going to be. We don't really know the final numbers quite yet. We know the cap can't go below one eighty But let's assume it stays right at that floor. I been under the working on the assumption that it's going to creep up to one eighty five rather optimistically but who knows if it gets that high. Is you mentioned kobe. Kobe tope took all essentially all the local revenues that these teams generated and made it two zero for almost all of them. There are some teams based on the cities and state. They were in that allowed some attendance. That really you know. It was a small percentage of what a normal season would be. So they're sitting in a good spot. Relatively speaking in terms of current cap space. There are about thirty seven million once you account for the almost eleven million. They rolled over last year. So at that point if they just stay there. They're they're currently line to be seventh most in cap space and that's a lot to work with in terms just resigning those guys internally and then going out on the market for tuning type of player ariba some more mid tier guys in the bond bell mold last year. You know a more of a modest deal where you get a lot of value in that regard but if they ended up staying put without making cuts and being seventh and cap space that gives them a lot of flexibility. But i think to your earlier point. We are gonna start seeing a lot more cut. We started seeing some today. There were some report. I think gave jackson the right guard for the raiders is not. There's a report that they they're looking to trade their right tackle trent brown. If they can't find a trade partner they'll likely cut him too. So the market's going to be flooded. It's going to be starting to be flooded. It's going to be even more so and on the bengals and they're likely to make some calm cap cuts. They don't need to make them because they have plenty of room. But just the value is not there to keep some of these guys on the books. You know the names. Bobby heart which will save just under five point nine million. Bj phinney will save three and a quarter million with no dead money and then of course geno atkins. We've talked about the gino situation Pretty at length and the question will be whether they released him. Post june one or or designated or releasing prior to june one or designate him or our releasing post you one which adds a little bit more savings to it but if you cut those three guys even if you don't cut gino with a post june one designation that adds about nine million in addition In additional cap space. So if you had that. Nineteen to thirty seven. Obviously naira almost sixty million and fifty six million give or take And that would baltim- in the top five of capital so they have a lot of flexibility to enter the long-term extensions with both their internal free and to go out on the market and signs of sizeable Upgrades hopefully on the offense line and positions that they they really need to

I am in an RV at an RV park in Las Vegas and barring my mom and dad's RV while I'm here covering the now Las Vegas Raiders Paul Gutierrez not only covers the raiders for ESPN. He's written a book about Raiders Fandom and followed the team Vegas kind of living like. A little bit. Paul I of about fifty fall of questions about what life in that our views like. But it does feel like the ability to pick up and react to sudden schedule changes is especially important to covering the raiders these days starting with what's happening right now, we are talking on Thursday evening ahead of this highly anticipated raiders game, and there is a Kovic scenario that you've been covering in depth so. What do we know about the game schedule? What do we know about who's playing or who is not playing? Basically, what has happened is is right tackle. Trent Brown tested positive for covert. Now as part of the protocols here anybody who's deemed a high risk contact with him has to self isolate for at least five days plus one which would be the. Last point of contact, which was practice on Monday they are all there. They were all there together It's the raiders entire starting offensive line, plus let's just throw safety Jonathan Abram in there as well. So man, all of those guys were just placed on the covid nineteen list again doesn't mean any of them tested positive. I was actually told that none of them. But as part of the protocols they have to selfies late for five days. Another other source told me that they've been doing virtual preparation. In case they can indeed get cleared play against the buccaneers in the meanwhile, it was supposed to be a big Sunday night football game. Yes. The League wanted to make sure that that game actually happens. So they bumped the raiders out of their move Seattle in Arizona into that spot. So a game will happen well, guess what if you guys I just mentioned you consistently Test negative on their Cova test the rest of the week and then again Sunday. Morning will then they'll be cleared to play. But at what time? Sunday morning Oh. Yeah. kickoffs at one o'clock. So the backstory all that as well. I gotTA catch my breath here when I started figure this out understandably. Yeah. They on their fifty three man roster. They currently have five backup offensive lineman. That's WHO's been trodden. They've been trying out there in practice every day. That's who Derek Carr has been had protecting him. That's who Josh Jacobs has been trying to run holes through those five guys plus they also have two guys on the practice squad that they could suit up if need be. So as we sit here right now on on Thursday late afternoon the raiders starting offensive line is anchored by Andre James and if you need to know who that is I got a couple of media guides for you can look about. Paul Creek me. If I'm wrong here, but I believe this is the very first case of an entire position group being taken down by cove like I know that we've had players here and there. You put on this list but in terms of the magnitude of what the raiders are facing with the offensive line, this feels extreme. Yeah. An and it's part of the protocol. Really. Because only one guy really has tested positive but it's out of the abundance of caution which we've heard a lot of since since the pandemic hit right you've got to self isolate you gotta make sure you don't test positive or show any symptoms, and even if you don't show any symptoms, still self isolate because you could be symptomatic. It's just very bizarre. It's a strange world we're living in Derek Carr said this week that you know he's been with the team for seven years seen a lot of weird things. He's this is the weirdest thing he's ever seen and it's worth noting like weird is by no means foreign to this organization even within this context I mean, I still need help Paul disentangling what exactly happened for instance with Jon Gruden their head coach who took an approach to corona virus with the team earlier this year that had me confused the media confused, and then ultimately Jon Gruden himself pretty angry at everybody. Yeah. So beginning at Camp, we show up in a media member. We have to test every day just to get in I have fifty two on my belt. All negative so far, which is a good thing Jon gruden passes out t shirts to the media with there waiting for us as we walk in the media room that say crush the virus because I was going to be his mantra he took issue with the NFL network reporting that he faked having the virus but yet kind of just went away then on the home opener on. Monday night football when he later would get fine for not wearing his mask properly, he brings it up himself and says that he never faked the virus it as a matter of fact, he did have it. So he talked about just how it was not fun. It made him feel bad and this is all before training camp. When he said he he went through this and beat it in in that. He has the utmost respect for it and he still wants to crush it in beat it into the ground like it was some sort of opponent.

The Raiders are about to get a whole lot better

"With you last year, I knew the raiders looked bleak. But they've added Trent Brown. Lamarcus Joyner Antonio Brown. Tyrel Williams vont has Burfoot and you're gonna add three first round draft picks, George if you didn't know the raiders last year, you definitely know who they are this year because they're going to draft three guys that could make this team and I'm not saying near a Super Bowl contender. But they are definitely a playoff contender. They got better. I think after this draft and if they get a quarterback. Oh,

Raiders add receiver Williams to pair with Brown

"As well. Talking about the Steelers immediate Antonio Brown. Now, a raider and the raiders not sitting by and just waiting for things to happen grabbing lamarcus Joyner from the secondary of the Rams robbing Trent Brown left tackle from New England. And then today grabbing Williams there from the Tyrone Williams from the chargers so taking from right inside the AFC west to solidify another receiver that's got pretty good speed and could be a complimentary receiver with Brown. And again, if cooked resigns and Nelson stays healthy. I mean, you're looking at a quartet of receivers that are going to be pretty reliable there for Derek Carr who's gonna get
