One of my favorites is a youth t-shirt that we give to young people who are grieving. The death of a loved one apparent to sibling even a grandparent. My favorite is the. I wanna talk to you about individuals who are beloved by millions around the world and who have died when tragedy happens to these individuals. We are struck by our grief reactions. Sometimes we aren't really sure why we would be so affected after all. We don't personally know them. We more than likely never met them but their work in personality have affected a steeply over many years and we admired them respected them appreciated them for their good work. The entertainment they provided and there are authentic spirit. This connected us with them and we are grateful so when something happens to one of them we hurt for them and for us one year ago actually on february ninth. I created an episode entitled when someone famous is sick or has died honoring. Alex trebek's limbaugh and kobe. Brian i showcase the lives of these three extraordinary men and all they accomplished in their lives. I wanted to revisit. This since. Alex trebek's and recently rush limbaugh have passed away. Alex trebek's was born in july of nineteen forty in sudbury canada and until the age of twelve. He attended jesuit schools. He finished high school in ottawa and then went on to study philosophy at the university of ottawa. After entering the journalism field he then realized it would be more lucrative to host game shows after hosting to in canada. He made his way to hollywood in one thousand. Nine hundred seventy three and hosted other short-lived game shows but it was in nineteen eighty-four that alex took the helm at jeopardy and it quickly became one of the most popular game shows in america. Winning four daytime emmy awards for outstanding game show host and has been on the air for over three decades in nineteen ninety. He married jean and they have two children. Emily a matthew. He has also been a spokesperson for various international charities including world vision and the smile train. He had participated in thirteen. Uso tours for american troops overseas and received the prestigious bob hope entertainment award in nineteen ninety eight in march two thousand nineteen. He announced that he had been diagnosed with stage. Four pancreatic cancer and although for many this would be very difficult news. Alex fort a valiant battle with illness coming in regularly to tape jeopardy even when he was so ill from his cancer treatments he wanted the show to go on yet on sunday november. Eighth twenty twenty. Alex trebek's died leaving behind his loving wife and children. he will always be remembered for the entertainment and education. He provided to millions of viewers around the world for so many decades as well as his philanthropic works. Our second featured celebrity was rush limbaugh born on january twelfth nineteen fifty one and just this week on wednesday february seventeenth to twenty one succumbed to lung cancer. At the age of seventy he was born in cape girardeau missouri and attended one year at southeast missouri. State university his family was prominent in the community and his paternal grandfather served as u s ambassador to india under president. Dwight d eisenhower. He also had an uncle who was a federal judge. during president. ronald reagan's administration and his father was an attorney. He knew at the tender age of aid that he wanted a career in radio but his father wanted him to find more suitable job. A more stable job and rush was looked upon as the rebel in the family because he wouldn't fall in line with his father's wishes rush landed his first job in radio while in highschool using the name rusty sharp working as a dj at a local radio station because he was deemed too controversial as a news commentator. He was fired in stations in missouri in pennsylvania and after a stint with the kansas city royals baseball team. He took a job as an on air host a k. f. b. k. in sacramento california in the mid nineteen eighties in less than a year. His ratings were off the charts and he became known as sacramento's top radio host. It was in nineteen eighty. Eight that the rush limbaugh show was nationally syndicated from new york city on. Abc radio and since then has single handedly created the conservative political. Talk show genre. It has been on. The radio for three decades and at one point became the highest rated american show program russia's also authored numerous books including his nineteen ninety-two bestseller the way things ought to be and in nineteen ninety-three see i told you so. Also in nineteen ninety-three. Russia was inducted into the radio hall of fame and the national association of broadcasters hall of fame in nineteen ninety eight. I just don't do idea what he'll be like as a house you i'm really. I'm really impressed. Astra back was able to record is long as he did that. That's surprising given how sick he was and he would. He announced that he was sick with cancer diagnosis. You know i was. I thought okay. Well this is it you. That's on cancer that it is kind. No and so that was you. I think he did much better. I accepted like. I expected to be over not to be callous. So you know. I really interested. He was able to it was on his was and given how much he was probably going through. I think that's something about the show him you'll be doing. And that bond. If you will clearly hosted audience was very meaningful for the show and for him just being for anybody to step into. So i think what they should try. And is at the nation five people out and see who clicks and who who resonates to ask anyone who to step into that role and you can't find house no you absolutely. Can't you have to find someone who will be good in their own way and in their own outlets And a chance. Fine now i wanna make comparisons to jj host the show. Well i mean there's nothing wrong with that kind of comparison because that was a huge move because so many people had sort of embraced jon stewart as a figure and so two transition to someone completely different. We'll see someone who are watching the daily show under craig kilborn. Wow so i eventually. The whole like air bio you've been through the whole progression and everyday like pay. And like this john stewart guy the ring and like the promo for. It looks like he might be pretty. Good okay my freshman remain. And i actually took a trip to new york city specifically to go to a taping of the daily show with john stewart and specifically also to see stephen colbert who is doing a segment that night and they both were very very accommodating and nice to us and made fun of us during the warm up act and yeah jeff this moment because i one there was one was the last day. And so like i actually. I got really lucky. Because i got to spend a whole night as like a jeopardy champion. It wasn't like okay turnaround. You record the next episode loss. You know so. I got to like that. I've got to be on at high Cool and my husband had come out with these even the ins and you're waiting afterwards for have to go back to the hotel and people from the studio audience leaving and this hard by with at least one little girl might have been two little girls. Don't remember in the back seedy and they were like waving at me and my shelley's the winner like we were cheering for you live you. What like it was just so cool Do most people who went on jeffrey. Don't don't get those little girls. They're like i can do this too. And it's okay to be smart and you know that some someone's half i think it's wonderful and i think the more female role models we have. Who are smart and out there doing their thing that better. It's so wonderful. That i had you as my role model when i was in latin academy once upon a time. Yeah so long ago. And then i got to play your father in law on stage interesting. "Happy New Year, Matt. Happy New year such as it is good to hear your voice. I think something that we all need after the events of this week is a break from the news and what's going on? And what better way to do it than watch TV? Although I'm not sure what we have tonight is the way most of us want to do. We've been dreading this night of your fan of jeopardy. Yeah, This is the last episode that airs tonight that Alex Trebek tape before his untimely but not surprised, surprising passing. He takes his last episodes just a few weeks before he passed away. He loved what he did. We loved what he did. We still love jeopardy and we hope for its future, But this is the last episode do not turn away. If you're a fan after final jeopardy there. They've planned some sort of a tribute in this final show to his life and career on this So and that will be special as these last episodes have been. If you've been watching this week, you know that he's been making references to Christmas. Because these were supposed to air that week because nobody knew this would be his last episodes. But because of the preemptions that happened on local channels during the holiday week, they decided to air them this week. So anyway, it's been a It was an amazing run for him on under best quiz show of its type. It's ever aired on television, and it's going to continue next week. Ken Jennings, who so associated with the show, having won the greatest of all time tournament, he's now a producer on the show and introduces categories. He'll be of the interim host for the next week. Somewhere down the pike. It's been reported that Katie Couric is one of the interim guest host still be doing there will be many Maura's this season continues. I doubt they'll name a permanent host until next season begins in the fall, and they, you know they haven't leaked anything about that. I think they really have one of these last episodes to belong to Alex Trebek and his memory and we'll see what happens in jeopardy going forward, But it is a significant TV show. It's been around forever, and it's really one of the best of its kind. And whatever happens to it. Whoever takes over the host job has a has big big shoes to fill. Yeah, premiered tonight. You know the show itself, I think has some some work to do in terms of like, really nailing down the premise, And it isn't the most inspired show And compared to veep. I mean, it's toothless is political satire. But having Ted Danson back on TV so quickly after last year's the Good place, playing sort of a cluelessly benign mayor, he's the mayor of L. A. He was a businessman who sort of got into politics is a large, but he's not He, You know, he's not vino. He's just He's just Ted Danson, and he's surrounded by pretty funny people. Boy Bob, demonic money, hand steals all his scenes. The guy from starting night live playing sort of his affable, sandal wearing communications guy, and there's just so many things that it's from Tina Fey.
