"That they are always there doing these weird things with player evaluation. They're spending big money on a backup, running back and Kenyan Drake Maybe it's more so for me about The the front office and the coach that Vegas currently has, and less so about, especially the quarterback Derek Carr, sometimes even underrated. Um, that would be the one the only one that I would really disagree with you on and it's more about the Raiders for me than it is for the Ravens. Not don't do it on the Raiders. I think they're going to be one of the worst team. I don't disagree. It's a one game thing, though. I think do there at home in that crowd in that environment, welcoming the black hole really, for the first time, and I think they're just front runners. The Raiders are front runners when they're good under Gruden. They're good. They they do some nice things when they're bad. They're bad. They remind me a lot of Rex Ryan coached teams, actually, which is they plan so much emotion. There's so much various good, good comparison, right? There's so much variance. It's totally the opposite of Sean McDermott. Consistency, consistency, consistency. You just never know what you're getting from. The Raiders beat the Chiefs last year. Right, And did they take them down the stretch and their second game against Kansas City? I know for a long time Last year, they were the only team that beat Kansas City, so that point is valid that when they're at their best, they are definitely better than a lot of the teams that they usually end up, finishing and around the standings. And then so Houston. Houston. I don't know about. I think the roster on paper is one of the worst maybe we've ever seen. I am a big Tyrod guy in the Tyra defender during his time here in Buffalo, But I don't know what that's going to look like when he plays in an offense and on a team like he's about to play on. Because one thing Tyrod always played in In Buffalo, and even in the limited action he got in Cleveland in in L. A. He's had run heavy teams that are good on defense. He really has not had to take chances with the football because he can trust what's around him, and I think he's smart enough to know there are a million throws in the field. He just cannot make. But not just not turning the football over has been enough for him, and he's been able to win games only attempting 25 30 passes a game. What is Tyrod look like when The team is so bad around him that he's got to start throwing the football 40 times a game. What does Tyrod look like in a pass heavy offense? I'm not sure the Texans want that. But I think inevitably, what's going to happen this year is they're going to have to throw the football. To get themselves into games. And I have no idea what Tyra is going to look like in an offense like that. I can't imagine it's gonna go great. We? We have to have more of a conversation on Tyrod as it gets closer here coming to buffalo, But you're right. I mean, look, he did some nice things. We know we can win some games. He's got to have everything right around him. That's the way I for Tyrod. He's gotta have. He can't carry a team right? Exactly. He's going to get the Jaguars. I mean, I don't think the defense is going to be good, but this is a point mainly about the Jags for me. Trevor Lawrence might be great going on the road to start his NFL career. And it's in a team that's had a lot of strife for the first few months, actually on an urban Meyer. I don't know what to think. Or expect from them, which isn't much by the way. Yeah, the The only thing that's holding me up on the Jaguars is I like their passing game. Well, I like I like the personnel they have in their passing him. I shouldn't say I like their passing game because I think Urban Meyer's doing some weird things with it. Yes, like he had Travis Ctn playing wide receiver. The same role of discussion. Ult was playing that had a pretty good rookie season for them. Um some of his schemes that have been coming out seemed to be a little strange. He had to bow playing tight end in the preseason. Um yeah, I have major questions about the coach there. So I I don't I don't mind betting against urban mired at least week, one week. One is always difficult, but I took three home underdogs. My first three dog Thursday segment of the season. Texans Giants. Las Vegas Raiders will take a time out and we come back. We'll touch real quickly on my NFL predictions and see if Joe agrees or disagrees with the division winners. "Last year went man I just I just think Sunday is going to is is just a stick of dynamite. In a good way. I hope only in a good way. It's unique to write like when's the last time I mean, there are games we've been hyped for they just playing the F C championship game. But like because of this, not because like words, we can't wait to see what happens. But like you just can't get way to get in there. Like right. I too. I talked about that a little bit last week on the nightcap, and I was having trouble coming up with anything Even Even remotely close. The closest I got to was Game one in the 06 playoffs against Philly, and that maybe was for me more so than than others because I was 12 at the time, and I really didn't remember either team in a playoff game. So for me that was like The first playoff game, like Let's just see what that looks like in there, and I can't wait for just the atmosphere itself. This is more of that, like I can't wait for the atmosphere, and I don't know when. The last time that's happened for either team. It certainly hasn't happened for the hockey demon. Well. No, no. And and, you know, But of course, you know you mentioned earlier. Like anticipating the 07 season like was the only other time in your life. You've had this sort of anticipation like those of us who are like closer to my age. Like, you know, 50 ish. I'm going to go 50 issue like that. Uh, 50 inch your stolen 50 ish range, right? Go in 60 years on 56. I'm okay about 50 years. Um, you know, we had those years in a row there from like 88 through really 99, where it was Just mostly every year you had some expectation. If they were going to be really, really good. And then you know, of course, the drought started and we went all that time. You know the hockey teams had their moments, of course, but It just It just pales in comparison. You know, I mean, I love hockey. Hockey is my favorite sport. Um, but I recognize where it just sits on the landscape, even in Buffalo like we love hockey. We love youth hockey. We love the You know, we love we love the NHL. We still love the Sabres. We hate them right now because we love them. Um, so we're a passionate hockey market. But like, you know, football is the NFL. It's just where it ranks. Nationally on the stage. It is the show. It's a much bigger show in a much bigger deal to be a big deal in that league than it is in hockey. Like as far as your profile goes and so to have this, um, coming at a time when you're Coming off of a season where you couldn't even go to the games. If you want to do is just it's such a great It's just such a great opportunity. I think for fans to like, make make memories. It's a great opportunity for the team. To make, you know it just create a memory for everybody, Uh, there's going to be out there and I just think it's going to be an all time special day. I really, really do. And that's you know, not knowing how the game is going to go. You know, I mean, it's obviously if it doesn't go the way you wanted to go. A lot of the steam gets taken out of what a memorable day it was. Instance, it becomes. It's like Quint, essentially the guy at the grocery store that I just talked about half an hour ago that can't wait to tell you how what's going to go wrong and what the demise is going to be and all that. Like. All right, dude, um You know, so you got to get the performance and you got to get the win and start the season off on the right foot. But I don't think going into a sporting event. There has been this part there's never been. It's unprecedented to have not been able to go to the games. So you have this anticipation he had the season. That was that was so great that you couldn't go to you can only you couldn't touch it. You could watch it. You couldn't really get there, and now you've got another season. That's about to start. On the heels of that memorable, incredible season that has deservedly high expectations. And like your you get to go to it, And I mean you just You hope you never have this situation again, obviously, because it would mean you didn't get to go to games for a whole year. But it is a really unique opportunity, and I just hope everybody makes the absolute most of it, Man because it is just the weather is going to be perfect. The opponent's perfect The bills. I mean, what? What? What are you supposed to be worried about? What? The bills Right now There's not to say like this is going to be a joy ride. Okay? I'm not saying that, but like You know, I might. You know how we we do this? Sal asked me that question on the show earlier 10 to 12 and I didn't have a good answer, right? Like what would you be worried about, like we we? We had our moments in the spring with I wanted Travis Ctn and Mike was worried that that would mean what that they're that they're going to give him the ball. If you're going to draft a guy 30th first round running back Well, then you're going to run it more than you have. Last year, and that's a problem. Well, not only did they not draft that running back, they didn't get a chance to draft that running back, I argued. Every time this. This subject came up like why, I don't think that they're going to change who they are. Just because they draft the running back. They're drafting or running back because he can help them. Do everything they want to do. That would be why you would do it. Um, but anyway, that didn't happen. There's no reason to me to think that the bills are going to change philosophically who they are. I think maybe the one thing that that might give you some pause is how McDermott handled the fourth down situations in the FC title game like Is that a troubling sign? That he is reverting to some more conservative traditional approach because they the bills were very aggressive on fourth downs appropriately so last season, and you know it played some part in their success. Gave themselves a better chance to keep drives alive and score more points. So they were. They were good at that, and they sort of backed away from it. In the big spot. McDermott really backed away from it in the big spot. I would bet He spent a lot of time thinking.

"Sports betting tips from the best in the game streaming now on Odyssey. Mike Show Open the Bulldog Brandon being in a moment just a few minutes ago, Among other things, we're talking about Travis Etns injury and whether just, you know briefly mentioned whether Jacksonville would draw that out. To see if he could come back later on. They have already decided not to do that. Just in the last two or three minutes ET en two injured reserve So he is officially Not going to play at all in 2021 big loss for fans would have been. He's fun to watch. You mean he He was incredible at Clemson, but he's not going to play as a rookie. By the way, I think I just saw a fantasy tweet Cam Acres who tore his Achilles. I don't know. Two months ago or something. Maybe not that long. But For the Rams. He has not been place than I are really I don't know. It's just not something you were thinking about. But Anyway. TTN is done for the year. Adam Schefter has announced it on behalf of the league, I guess Okay, that's how that works. Jacksonville did it and he's telling us Bills GM Brandon Beane. It was we were told, media were told just a little bit more than half an hour ago would do a zoom call. Take questions today, or at least Make a statement or something. Perhaps it's about, uh, it would be weird if he didn't mention it at least the five players on the team who are away from the team now for five days. After having been in close contact with a trainer who tested positive. So Beasley, Gabriel Davis. Let alone a Yep. Milano incline. Yep, That's your list and then reveals or exposes the five players for being unvaccinated right? That is just known. Or else they would have different rules here. I believe that that's correct. Yes, that's my understanding anyway of the rules that if if, if the players were vaccinated, they would not have to be away from the team for five days. I'm not sure what the protocol is then for anyone who is vaccinated. Maybe you just have to keep you can keep coming to work and keep getting tested. And as long as you're Negative. It's fine. But if you are not vaccinated and don't have that layer of protection, you have to stay away for five days. And again as we wait for being like, Will that matter in this game? Well, the game doesn't matter. We don't know if the Bills had had plans to get Josh Allen and get starters on the field. But if they had, this is a blow to that, assuming these guys would have been among them. But still, you know, it's not the regular season yet, And obviously the best case scenario is that they're all back next week, and you have a week, actually, two weeks of practice. Before the season opener. But, you know, maybe it's the week of work that matters more than Saturday. I I would think so. I mean, um I don't know if what the team would tell you. It really depends on what their plans might have been for Saturday with those players, if there if they were in the plans at all. Um, but yeah, To me, it's more Yeah, the week of work, and you know, most of those guys I think can probably get by. Even without that. It's more just to me a little bit ominous. Um, that you know, it's a reminder and should be a reminder. Certainly, I think would be to fans I would expect. It's the same for the team. The players, the coaches, everybody over there like this could happen at any any moment. But we're still we're still living in this world. It's it's um you know, it's still going to present challenges from time to time and hear it. And here here is one and it comes at a relatively meaningless time of the year. Um, as far as like impact on the team if they're not there, But again, there's nothing to stop this from happening to anyone else on that team whose unvaccinated in September October or, you know any any week of the season. The call looks to be set up. We're just waiting for being to appear here and start things off. Sam Manson Pff at four. We'll talk to Sal Carpaccio. After that some point, maybe around five. I'm watching it in Jos. Studio, by the way, his control room Joe, I. I know this is happening. Maybe it's not happening right this second, but I know Joe is out there working, uh, Working channels to either trade for Travis Ctn if his team is bad, or maybe tried to trade James Robinson away if he's got depth, I know Joe is working hard in there. He's grinding fantasy league with me. You know, I am not buying into the preseason. If there was a guy that's got any hype, right now I am trading him as quickly as I can get him off my team. And if you don't like your team, you're happy to take on a player like e T N and Stash him. Yeah. For next year Like he's 22 like you mentioned acres earlier in the segment. He tore his Achilles and the historical data on an injury like that. Is you Do you do not come back from it like you might be back in the league, But you are never the same player that you were, and acres had really yet to establish himself in a full season yet anyway. But Lisfranc injuries just looking back over like it's troublesome, But it's not an Achilles injury like he should still have a good career when he comes out less Frank is Julio Jones. Sammy Watkins. Yes, There's also the Jones fracture. Is that what Watkins had? Is that different than this? Jones. Phillip think they're different to imagine they're different. They're called different things. I think they are different, but I thought I thought Watkins had the list Frank, which was the same as Julio Jones, but I could be mistaken. I don't I don't know. Member. The Jones remember our boss coming in here like I had that injury. And here's what happened. And I remember that because that I was that way about John Hollis shock. Because John Hollis Act had a sub. Remember him? Of course you do. Of course I do. Yeah. Sub Lex Perennial tendon and like I had that Just Liz Frank appears to be like middle of the foot. By the way, Jones fractures like on the pinky toe side of your foot. Well, so not too far off. But, well, Joe's got Liz Frank. And if it is a Jones fracture for Julio, he came back. So either way. Either way, you might be in the same place. Who's that, Joe, is. Are we going? Not quite. I think it looks like we're just about to get going, but maybe another minute away. Alright Joes, watching, uh, Women's hockey game. Yeah, the the women's worlds are going on right in Calgary, Russia and the US It's like shots are 42 5 through two periods for the Americans, us also imaginary. We were getting shot. 42 5, the rush Russian Olympic Committee. What's uh, what they're being called, even though it's not the Olympics. Okay. Does that accomplish anything? No. It's punishing them did during the Olympics. You ever feel like Oh, this isn't really Russia. No, no right. Like what did that accomplish? Time put a bet accomplished. Shame. For the Russian government. I you could have done worse. Right? Like make them wear like tied I or something or not even compete. How about that? Yeah, right. Maybe that's a you know that's harsh. Make them play in winter coats. Well, our full like the 800 m hurdles in a winter coat. No 800 m hurdles in like work boots. You gotta wear work work. Yeah. Let's get creative with these punishments. Yeah, we're just gonna change the abbreviation right? Thought it was Russia. I thought it was Rochester. I thought the USA was playing Rochester are OC in the world Championships..

"And by the time when I'm getting out, I'm thinking Well, I should have got insurance on this rent a car because it's probably going to be upside down by the time back out here. I mean, and you know how the radar fans dress? Yeah. You know, and and and they are just nuts and their fires all over there swinging swords, and it's just like and I It was the old. Not second knows there's two times I've feared for my safety. Um, but, yeah, I was just like I was nervous. I was scared in that place. The other time was when I was a very, very, very young broadcaster. I was working part time at the all news station here where I had interned also in Buffalo called W E. B R at the time, and I was also working at the airlines part time so I could fly for free. So what I would do is go to the Monday night games for the radio station because I can fly for free, right? And you know, it was cool. And I would get a discount hotel because I worked for the airlines and they go. Yeah, we can do that for you. Well, I went to New York for a jet scheme. And it was it was in the Kelly era in that group, and the bills got they were absolutely annihilating the Jets by halftime, and they started burning the place down. Basically, they started bonfires with hats. I saw some guy you know, a mini TV I saw some guy gets smashed over the head by a mini TV. There were fires everywhere. It fights everywhere, and I'm sitting in the press spot, and this is a night game. So by the time I'm done with my work, it's 111 30 in the morning and I'm thinking I got to walk out to my rent a car. Are you kidding me? I don't want to walk out of here. What am I going to walk into? And it was pretty rowdy in that parking lot, too, as I'm basically racing out there to get out of there. And I'm thinking what is going to happen to me here? It was craziness. There's only one city that I would say is on this list. For me. It's Philadelphia and having been to the vet. For Mets games when I was younger, That's the only time I ever thought like, I don't know if there's like a crazy fan or crazy fans. It was not, You know, Philadelphia, New York have a little bit of a rivalry. I don't know what it is now, and this was a long time ago. But I always I always worried about going to the vet because I thought their fans were just mean to fans of other teams. I never I was never brave enough to go to the spectrum. I would not go see like I never would have gone even if someone gave me tickets to see the Rangers play the Flyers at the spectrum now again. We're talking the 19 seventies. So the flyers then where the broad street bullies and they were getting in fights and everything. It was probably maybe there maybe the hockey version of Raider fans and I would never, ever set foot in the spectrum. It would have scared the living daylights out of my first road trip covering the Sabres gr. Wouldn't It worked? I would have gone to every other arena in the world, except that one because that just Philly fans have always worried me like I just think they're not the New York fans. New York City fans have their moments, too, as you just mentioned, but Philly fans always scared me. Hey, remember an iconic, um Writer from Montreal drove. He didn't want to fly. He drove to Philadelphia for a playoff series against the Flyers. And of course, he had that Quebec license plates. When he came out, all four of his tires were slashed My large, I'm not laughing because it's funny. It's just, um and his license plates were gone, and he's got to go back over the border. Yeah, they took his license plate, slash his tires, and now he's got to Get four new tires and try to get over the border with no plates. Welcome to Philly. Uh, some potentially bad news to pass along about Travis Ctn. This from Ian Rapoport from NFL Network ET en. Um Was listed as out indefinitely with a mid foot sprain. But Rapoport is now has tweeted. After the game last night, he was spotted on crutches. He's saying it's a Lisfranc injury and there will be further tests today. A source said. X rays were negative. The belief is it's just a sprain Exams today will termine how long he's out. I am not a doctor. I try not to play one on the radio. But from what I recall, Liz Frank Injuries can be really troublesome, uh, for players for athletes, because it's something that can linger for a while. It doesn't necessarily go right away. So I'm just Potentially some bad bad news for hopefully, not for Travis Ctn, really exciting player and loved watching him play at Clemson. 80305 50, who are one has impressed you through the first two bills. Well, it's great for the Buffalo fans. They get to hear him again as he signed off last year. I think there was some doubt. As to whether you know he would be doing that or not, and, uh, it, you know, I know Buffalo Sabre fans are very happy that he's going to be around. I know it's only 20 games and they would want more. It sounds like Rick wanted more. But You know, and the Sabres wanted less so, but they had to, You know, come to an agreement, and Rick said they came to an agreement rather quickly on the 20 games, So it's great that He'll get that opportunity to do that. It's interesting, Paul. I mean you growing up here you grew up with Guys like Rick Ted Darling Van Miller, the legendary Phan Van Miller. And I've always said this and you. I think you understand this because you've done a lot of play by play in your life that special connection. That a play by play broadcaster especially one who does the same team for like. I mean, we're talking with Rick. We're talking 51 years. When you have that you have, you can form a really incredible special bond. With the fan base. When you're in that job, you're good at it, and you do it that long. And you cover generations of fans of that team. Yeah. He spoke yesterday that he had some offers to leave. And never even consider them. There wasn't even an option. This was his city. This was his team. This is what where he wanted to be. And brick generated. You want to get Rick generate cranky. Call him the voice to the sabers. I know, right he correctly is. I did that once very, very staunch on that. That Ted darling, Yes, the voice of the Sabres. He is not. I did that once with him and he corrected me And actually, I I did it with Murph one time, too, and he also corrected and said That's Van Miller. Mhm. So, yeah, it's funny. You mentioned that. Yeah, they both have a very keen sense of history and and what it means and what other people have meant to the city. Even though Rick has done it a lot longer than Ted. Darling did. Ted Darling was the guy from day one. Rick came on in season two. And Rick feels very strongly about that. Yeah, and it's so it's interesting. It's It's sad on the one hand that he's going to go out with the team where we expect they're going to be And and you know, the the playoff drought and all that stuff because you know, we we played a clip yesterday, Jody B. S. He put together a mix tape basically of summer. Rick's best calls and one of the clips that rating played on the show yesterday was the JP Doom on goal. To beat Ottawa and what was it would have been game three. I think of that series, right? And, you know, you think of the you know, jury and offend again up against the Rangers in the playoffs. You can think of may day. I mean, all that even, you know, Rob Ray rag dolling. What? Lamu? I think Claude Lemieux you fog game way back when you're a bear scoring in the fog. Yeah, And I've heard that call, too. And it's just You know, that's part of a guy who reaches the status Rick has reached is that you know you listen to such he's known for some la la la la la la La Fontaine. He's got catchphrases. He's got gold calls. He's got some memorable moments that you can actually you could play the call back in your brain in your head because you've heard it and you identify with it so much. Absolutely. I mean, that's why he's such an icon because Uh, you know, fans just relate to his calls, and there And that's the things they aren't rehearsed. Um, I won't say who the person is because I don't want to embarrass them. But there's there's a play by play person in the NHL right now who I have seen sit in his booth with a page of cliches. Trying to memorize them. And it's just like, Are you kidding me? Yeah. I mean, you know what that's going to sound like when you get to it. And that's not Rick generate at all. He doesn't rehearse anything that comes natural. You know, As he says, may day he doesn't know where that came from It just it just comes out. You know, First of all, he's a witty, smart person and you know, he he understands he he can take in the gravity of the situation immediately and be able to translate it to the fans and comes up with these iconic calls and trust me. They are not rehearsed. They they come out. Just the way they are, and he has no idea that he's going to say as he said, How does he know Brad May's going to score a goal like that? They hadn't scored in 18 games. He's gonna Why would you? Why would he be rehearsing that he's going to score and he's going to undress Ray Bork on the way to doing that? No, I always find that amazing again. And I think it's a really cool discussion because of play by play background that both of us up. I can't do that. I'm not that good. I've always been amazed by that ability. I think Jim Nance is one of those guys that C and again I I don't know if he does think of it beforehand in his head. But his golf calls or you know the a basketball championship or anything. I think to have the ability to Al Michaels, I think is good at that. Um Joe Buck in baseball, I think is good at that to have that ability. To add lid..

"And as much as there's this microscope, and he's living in a fish bowl right now is the number one overall pick as the future savior of any franchise that would have selected him. It happens to be the Jaguars. I Think if you look at his track record, even going back to high school before he was at Clemson, but definitely at Clemson at the highest levels of college football on the national championship state championship stage. Say that really fast a bunch of times more than once he is equipped to handle it. And yet he's humble about it. He knows that there are still a major learning curve and to hear him talk about it and to hear him recognize. Hey, I've got this to work on that to work on. You understand that he's in the right headspace. Just got to get a little bit better getting the ball out taking completions, Um, staying out of second and long and third and long makes it really hard for coach Bev and as an offense, it's just hard to convert all those third and long, so That's that's part of me to stay ahead of the chains and then just the whole offense. We got to click a little bit more, still got some work to do. We're not balanced right now. And when you get you know you have stuffed on were too many seconds off of, uh, off schedule plays in the first half, you know, three threes and out other than that one first down, So, um, that And then then the red Zone today, as you know, Trevor, the nice job and a two minute drill and then little pounded in there so Got to get her offensive line back and play better, you know, and, uh, run the ball. One reporter asked Urban Meyer why Trevor Lawrence isn't getting all the reps with the number ones after this game. If he wins it, you know which that hasn't happened yet. So as soon as that happens, then you give them the wonder ups all one reps if he wins it. That hasn't happened yet. Stop it. Would you really cut off your nose to spite your face, and maybe he's being sincere? Or maybe he thinks that he's being sincere. Certainly do your due diligence and do what's best for the team. That part I get. But come on. In a season in which you are starting fresh. You're starting from scratch. You got the number one overall pick that that pretty much every team, the majority of them in the NFL coveted. Your brand new head coach. Your Playing with zero expectations this season. Why would you ever not start? Trevor Lawrence? Why would you put off Getting him comfortable and acclimated. To life as an NFL starter. There's no reason to go with anyone else. Unless and and here's the The glaring weakness from last night's game is the offensive line was patchwork and piecemeal. And to that end, we did talk to Jaguar's radio host, JP Shad Rick, who joined us following his postgame show on the Jaguars. Radio networks want to bring back a portion of that conversation. About Trevor Lawrence and about his development and where he is and whether or not this is an actual competition with Gardner, Minshew and CJ Beth third, But if you want to hear what he had to say about the offensive line The unspoken heroes on any football team. Well, if they do their jobs well, you'll need to check that out on our podcast after hours, Amy Lawrence dot com. In addition, we do not have any information yet about the serious about while about how serious the foot sprain is for Travis Ctn, the rookie running back out of Clemson. This is a guy who's supposed to be really important to what they want to do. And and they didn't want to run the ball. But Travis didn't last very long out there on the field. So we're waiting some word on Tuesday. They showed me great. Talent We were planning on to use them in any always look up there. He's limping off the field, so yeah, and then, uh, you know, he was out in open space, and you know it was in a great throw to him, but we're just I see what everyone else. He's a talented guy that we've got to get in space. So we'll await some word on the rookie running back. They do obviously have other options. James Robinson being one of those, but to lose him after what one snap one series, especially if it's something that could keep him out for a while. That's frustrating in a setback that they don't want to have All right, you'll hear what JP has to say about the quarterbacks and whether or not this is an actual competition in Jacksonville, she says with a snicker. Also, there is some Caray Z. Conspiracy theory that I've been alerted to in New England. Are you kidding me? It's Bill Belichick. He doesn't do conspiracies or tricks. But I will explain, And I knew it was going to happen. Producer J We now have another tweet about you. That starts with no offense. This one though. I feel like you can shoot down with one very steady arrow coming out of your your quiver. Your bow. This is going to be super. I'm gonna set you up. Put the ball on the tee. I'm changing sports. I was first with the archery and now I'm going With Tebow. I'm going to put the ball on a tee and you can just knock it out of the park. Right? So that's coming up next. Thanks for joining us on what is a Tuesday morning. All the week's going so fast.

"Whatever these things would be, they would be tough to pull off. I mean, I agree. You had a team that was like an all time great team for the franchise. And Sanders is good like I They've done a great job at identifying the right receivers, I would say since Brandon Beane, you know all of them. Beasley gets open like he does. Brown was valuable digs as elite and Sanders is a good idea to so There are a lot of good receivers in the league, and I also think like if it were me, I might have gone wide receiver with my first round pick because you can't have an can't have too many. Um, but Almost nothing they were going to do this offseason to me would have seemed like No. Because Because they're coming from such a good place, right? That's that's what happy to ET en right. Like what? Receiver? You could replace Kolb easily with a faster player. But is that making you better like he is excellent at what he is asked to do. Right. So you know, maybe ideally, you'd have a guy who's you know faster than cold easily. But he was the best slot receiver in the league last year, Right, So his chemistry with Alan is undeniable. So like I don't want to take him off the field, and I'd say the same about most of their receiving corps. So that's where Travis Ctn like I can get a guy that can be used out of the backfield and in the slot. But he's also a running back and he's a home run hitter and that I thought there was an opening for on the bills and maybe met Brita. Even being signed proves that to some extent, But as far as the receiver goes, I don't know that I was drafting someone who was going to step in necessarily and and unseat any of the guys that played last year. Yep, I agree. I think it's a good 0.2 guys. That what you're you're talking about here, which is It's hard to get better when you're already really good, especially in a salary cap system. And, you know, I know everybody wants all pros at every position and too deep. It's just unrealistic. You can't do that. The bills have a really good roster. It's hard for them to really get a lot better. Um, you know you can make arguments here, there of what they may should have done or not, And John Brown is in that conversation. I do want to make the point if we're sticking at wide receiver that You know, obviously was calculated what they did with John Brown and then bringing in Emmanuel Sanders. And you think Why is that? I mean, they intentionally as you as you put a bulldog. It's not not even that they didn't add speed. They took away some speed. That was a calculation to me. It wasn't just about the salary cap number, but that had something to do with it. There's always ways to kind of do that thing. I do think that part of this was And you can go to the chief's game for this, too. If you watch back at the A F C championship game. I think they feel that their and we've talked about this that their receivers needed to be a little more physical, too. And if they can be a little more physical that would open up Maybe having the ability to get downfield a little bit more for these guys because I think what happened over the last couple of years. It started really in that Baltimore game a couple of years ago where they're DBS just came and they they made sure the bills had no breathing room. The bills, receivers and the Bills didn't have much of an answer for that. And I think maybe getting Gabriel Davis more on the field and seeing how physically can be and he's pretty fast by the way for his size. Getting a guy like that Emmanuel Sanders for John Brown does that that is the upgrade their which is He's more physical, and he can play a little bit more, You know, versatile around the offense in different spots, and maybe that just allows teams to say, Hey, hold on a second. We can't be physical with them at the line of scrimmage, and now you give them a little more room to operate. More with Sal..

"Because Travis Et en is very versatile, and I love the kid as you mentioned at the top of the segment. Listen, just ask Vince. I mean, some of those bridesmaids were pretty good. You know what I mean? They were pretty good. Um, you know, I love when somebody No matter what league or sport was talking about. I love when somebody comes in, that is, you know, counter to what has been either verbally espoused or schematically. Implemented for years, and they've got a different notion. Now. Chip Kelly was that way. Didn't really work out, though I do think In large part, his NFL tenure is largely underrated. I mean, like he had a couple of decent years he did and games he did you know the whole thing with Riley Cooper went sideways. That was a bad look that lost in points rightfully so, but You know, I think people misremember Chip Kelly was actually producing point being chipped came in with different concepts and different thoughts. And it was interesting, and it seems like Urban Meyer's company with same Different thoughts but the same way of being different and I think that's fun for us, and I think it it forces people to to adapt and you'll get to see just how smart some of these other franchises are on the flight. Yes, adjusting BT I said When we're talking about this in the slack channel, who did I compare him to Sean Payton right. A matchup is he's searching for matchups. Right, John. He would do this with Jeremy Shockey. When Jeremy was, you know, one of those early I got a mismatch. Tight end. You're gonna how you cover him. Put a line back out there. CIA put the safety back there. You have no shot because he's so big. And so urban Meyer is searching for matchup advantages, and that's how great offensive minds are able to take advantage of a changing NFL because it is changing used to never see this. We're running back with, you know, spend a lot of time outside of the backfield. I think we're seeing Maura and Maura and Maura of this, especially as he's running back, coming out of college arm or and more diverse like Travis Ctn is, you know, we want a church it up right? And we want to make it seem so elaborate, but the end of the day in the corps, the corps, you know, message point in the NFL, and from it often support of you is Get your fastest guy getting the ball in space. That's right. Maybe really matter how you doing? We're doing where you line them up. What he did in college. How we gets the ball. Just get in the rock and give us some space. Right? "Put this kid split out. No. When they drafted him, That was obviously the intention that's right. And maybe they had their eyes on one of two other players of E T and was The board. Maybe they would have tried that with somebody else. Maybe I don't know that for sure. A couple things first off. I'm Travis et and I'm pumped because you're gonna make a lot more money. Catch the ball. Then you are running the ball guarantee. But in the NFL, no doubt about it. Number one number two my question. I would have probably this back to you. We have had You know, it's funny. It seems like a little thing. You know, it's not, but it's not the sexy conversation. But my partner and you were just being honest. Of course, some of the New York papers took it the wrong way. But when you said And you were not wrong when you said it. That's a quant. Barclay's not every down back because of his inability to pass, protect properly. And then of course, he got hurt. It was It was terrible timing, but you were absolutely right. If if Travis et ends, not spending enough time in the running back room. Is he learning how to properly pick up blitzes to protect this quarterback? Yeah, He's been pretty good at that, and it's really a want want to thing and at Penn State say Quan wasn't asked to do it a ton and in college is it's such a different proposition, then. You know these? These brutes at linebacker who are I don't know, screwed up in the head a little bit. Just wanna knock your block off and I'm only half joking, right? So it's a different exactly. It's a different proposition in the NFL than it is in college. Um I don't remember Travis Ctn being Liability in college, but also just like sake wanted us to us. To an extent. It's a good question. You asked me T because they scattered him a lot like they have free releases for him. So if you're gonna dog him Dog, the running back. You want the running back to stay in, They're gonna free release. And if you don't have someone pick him up, Guess who's getting the football? Travis? He did, And that's what's gonna happen. He's gonna go 60 yards because you're now you know, out, man, because you have everybody in man coverage behind that, and so It's a good question on what seat we'll only know we'll only be able to know when we see it right. Just like we knew when we saw it with sake, want a little bit, But I love this idea. For the Jacks. Will jaguars with Travis Ctn. The reason you know this makes sense, and you knew it was on his mind more so than just drafting travesty. Tien is that he even said this. Urban Meyer originally wanted to draft Darius Tony. Right from from Florida. But the Giants took him at 20. And we know this about Tony. He is a He is a kick returner. He is a wide receiver. He is. You can put him in the back field. You could do the Jets. Would you do everything with him? And so I think, Urban Meyer Had this in his mind. I'm going to take forever Lawrence number with the first pick. And then with our 2nd 1st round pick. I'm getting this multi purpose diverse playmaker. I want to Darius Tony member. He said this after the draft, he five C T and wasn't our first choice. Say that right? Anything. We wondered if he should actually say exactly. He said He was heartbroken, like like I'm heartbreaking because there is Tony. A lot of people thought he was gonna fall into the second round. Sir. Urban Meyer was like I'm gonna get him like he's my guy quietly. He's truly who I want. When he was gone. Travis Ctn became the the I don't know the bridesmaid, so to speak, but it's a hell of a bride's maid. Because Travis see Tien is very versatile, and I love the kid as you mentioned at the top of the segment. Listen, just ask Vince. I mean, some of those bridesmaids were pretty good. You know what I mean? They were pretty good. Um, you know, I love when somebody No matter what league or sport was talking about. Tomorrow four Eastern one Pacific. He's out there. Help us set the stage for the PGA Championship. All right, taking a charity here, CBS Sports Radio CBS Sports Network. This is interesting. Travis Ctn drafted by the Jaguars in the first round, running back, obviously great running back somebody my partner's raved about from the moment I saw him place like, Yeah, that's I mean many things so smooth man. There's certain guys that you just look at your like, man. Is he even moving? You know, Alvin Camaro is the same way and I didn't know I haven't come here until we had Sean Payton. Remember, we had Sean Payton on before his rookie season. Is that from the tunnel when he called us from the tunnel? Maybe. Yes. It was a preseason preseason game. I get you guys seem come on Camaro, and we're like dude you talking about? I didn't know him, Tennessee. I mean, no name. And then look at him, and he's the same kind of runner. He's just smooth and comfortable and easy with his body doesn't take a lot of hits catches a ton of passes, which is the genesis of the story. Yes, it is, and the Jaguars need Infusion of everything on offense, 30th and points per game. They averaged less than 20 points. Now, a lot of that will be rectified with better quarterback play. But by extension, you wanna have the proper weaponry around young stud Trevor Laurence and Travis ET en while Red that is a running back, and that move was scrutinized Debate. Some people thought that was too high, apparently might be playing some wide out as the master chemist is already mixing and matching in the laboratory. Here's Urban Meyer on what he's trying to see what he's trying to accomplish with getting ET and some reps outside. He's the leading rusher in a C C history, so for him to run inside zone and power and zone right now, we thought, Let's just At the worst case scenario, you have a running back with skill set of a wide receiver. Best case scenario. You have Ah, hybrid player that can do both. And that's what we're hoping. Develop. Take two cute, or is this something that could really work? No, not at all. I'm trying to look real quick, because obviously you know my my NFL statistics as a runner over 10,000 yards as receiver over 5000 yards Which is it's being Marshall Faulk and, um and Methuselah. Marcus Allen are the only players in NFL history with 10,000 yards rushing and 5000 yards. Receiving s O. I mean, I came out of college and people looked at me as a Man. He's a good receiving running back. I had 22 receptions on average per year. So how did you get that reputation that have no because I caught 22 passes that so That's my point, Mel Kiper said he could catch well, not what I could, but I caught 22 passes. But think about that. That's not a lot is what I'm saying. But it is for college running backs and you got a lot of that's a lot of catching. It is so go look at any college running back. You look at You'll see like the numbers are. Yeah, OK, he had like 30 passes something like that. Travis is. Tien had 48 receptions last year, which was the most cities had on his four years. The year before that he had 37 receptions, six touchdowns out of those two years, eight in total over his four years. But he actually is a pass receiving running back. And so when you think about the advantage that that gives you when you think of the lady on bells of the world who caught 80 something passes one year, or Christian McCaffrey, who was the first one And I'm really long time since Marshall actually Since Marshall Faulk did it, I forget what year that was 2000 and two maybe to go for 1000 yards receiving and 1000 yards rushing. If you have a running back with that skill set, it gives you so many more options because you basically can be in a one back set or you could be in a five wide set. And I think that's what urban Meyer is looking for. He has a precedent with this beauty is we all remember From his days in Florida when he had Percy Harvin, who was one of the most dynamic two way player to two position players, not really two way that would that would imply offense and defense, but to position players really in the history of college football, Percy Harvin was and so when you but not in the NFL, which not the NFL it all not in the NFL and all the disappointment of the Yeah, But was it really his skill set or was? I don't know. Or was it the other? Maybe some off the field. It was definitely like to feel stuff. But Travis Ctn seems like a good Levelheaded kid on and so looking at this. I thought it was genius, and I first saw it. He's taken all of his reps of wide receiver. He knows how to be a running back right. He knows how to run between the tackles and know what power looks like and all those other things but Be a wide receiver that that that's a skill that he'll have to learn. And then, ultimately, if this works out drafting him in the first round as a hybrid is actually a genius move because he's more he's more valuable than just a running back who you could have gotten whatever in the second or third round and it's not like urban Meyer just said, Wow. "There's really some conversations early in the year, but those guys getting fired and that's the reality of it. Mr. Whiskey didn't work out. And so any dog makes sense to start the season. He's not the long term solution. But what if we're two games into the thing and 2021 the Bears or bears in it up on B. Dalton looks terrible argues, gonna throw Justin fields out there before he's ready, and we three And sort of have a repeat of the Mr Biscuit situation. I'm not saying just because Mr Basically, I think he has a chance to really, really good. I just hope that he's not rushing to the field. As a means of two guys trying to save their jobs. I don't know if that's gonna happen, but they're in a bad situation and that they have to win. Now. Does Justin feels buy them a little more time? Maybe it's not gonna buy them an extra year. I feel like living with us for weeks. Was que separates you back to my original point. They're gonna try to get him out there sooner rather than later. What is not necessarily in the best interest of the order vision. Lot of people said that the Raiders as you alluded to it, Alex Leatherwood at number 17 where the big losers last night a confusing decision. Did you also think that confusing is the issue? That's wait. Oh, put it And on some level this feels like the Cleveland burial pick a few years ago, when Mike may have just got there's a GM and, of course, John Cruden coach because he felt over drafted and to this point clearly failed first round talent who was over drafted inside the top five. Alex Leatherwood. I had a day to grade on him, and I talked to folks around the league that agreed with that. But look, we say this all the time about quarterbacks. It only takes one teeth. They need help with the offensive line because much crazy things that Jon Gruden did. Over the course of the off season that said, they've literally could've picked anyone on defense and made that defense better. And here's how I come out of the first round. You look at the piggy say OK, this team better now than they were. Before Thursday and the Raiders or not, they they're not. They drafted Alex Lowe. What you could help. But there it's not a substantial upgrade, which is what you need in these first round picks. So puzzling is is where I would put this. Would say puzzling would describe both the Steelers and the Jaguars decisions to take running backs in the first round as well. Both nausea Harris and Travis Ctn might end up being very good backs. The Steelers had a lot of needs, especially the offensive line and the Jaguars. The worst team in football out of those two did either nausea or ET en makes sense in your mind. Yeah. So not the nausea, hair smooth by God, and they stay didn't signal but it had been pretty clear for a while that they were They like nausea, And that could be a possibility there. 24. There were some conversation Maybe the Jets had they been in 18 would have thought about that as well. Your idea that the opposite line is terrible. They need help with cornerbacks in helping edge rusher s O. They had playing these quarterback. We just talked about what if Mack Jones was there? I think that I think about that. But We're not your hair is drawing comparisons lovey, Um Belle and the Louisville. We always met these ConStor draft time. But if it's anything close to that, that will help and you can come back and a two and a three and you can find offensive line help, But you're not gonna find it, Not you, Harris. And that's probably thinking there. Jack Wars moves a little more. That concerning, But look, this is Urban Meyer's first year, you know, they kind of picks. You have to use every single one wisely after, By the way, having a ton of free agency kind of money created. See that you didn't go out there and crush it on. This team has to win, and I feel like six or seven wins is doable. Next year if you hit on everything, and and and by the way in the 17 game season, and then after that, you gotta start going to playoffs. So try. You know, we got trade Trevor Laurence done and done, But I think 18 feels like he was over, attracted by a seven or eight picks when they would've been back on the clock. And again operative lines, even tow line safety cornerback those their own just well, linebacker. So I thought slightly ever drafted love the player. Just question the pick. Would you think about the Panthers going with JC Horn? There was a lot of thought that they should go offensive line as well. Help out. Sam Donaldson help out Christian McCaffrey. Instead, they went with horn your thoughts on that decision. Yeah, No, I love love just you horn. In fact, I had him as the first defensive player of the board. And you know it happened right around the time that passes through town without the board the other corner back, which we thought was gonna happen with the team nearby, but the pandas don't have any depth. None at cornerback. So that made some sense. Um, and it feels sometimes attack now, so that's good for seeing dollar pick up a script year option. But you're right. Sam Donald came from an organization where he spent much of his time running for his life. So you have to sort that out in Carolina, which I think is a better situation for for Donald. But it's not substantially better, And that means Surround him with players that can protect him on offense. That would imagine we'll see that happened soon, starting in a few hours starting tonight. Which player are you most excited about optimistic about going into tonight? Oh, so tonight. So what's gonna happen tonight? So let's see what my list here mixed up missing one. So bookie bashing his head. Russia's I liked a lot of the weak force, and I mentioned the name and in terms of a new office. Chiron tell Maura could do only 57. But he's going to 14 9 at his pro day. 40 minutes Political and it was absolutely electric when he was on the field..

Alex Leatherwood Jon Gruden Alex Lowe Donald Trevor Laurence B. Dalton Sam Donaldson Christian McCaffrey John Cruden Sam Donald Mack Jones six 40 minutes Justin JC Horn Jaguars Travis Ctn Urban Meyer two guys 57

"We thought it was gonna be maximum three. At least I did for the longest time. And now I wonder if this is Sam says there's a great fit for any quarterback, but I do wonder if the Patriots and Matt Jones, we want these conversations. We haven't fired 16 years by. Whoa. How did we let that happen like this? This feel sort of similar to what we saw. You know, a lesser degree, perhaps, of what? We saw a comrade for two days. Tom Brady is 1/6 round pick. That's the entire league with it on him For six rounds. This is only this is number 15. Overall. Here is Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports, and I was wondering about the Bears because It's become a cottage industry to crush Ryan Pace and Matt Naggy and their quarterback decision making and the Bears constantly flailing to get a QB. And last night they were widely lauded for being aggressive and going to get Justin Fields at number 11. Did you think that was a smart and savvy move by the Bears? Yes. So I I love it. I love it on the surface. I love it for my long tortured bears friends who now have something to cling onto. Besides a tweet from the organization that said, you know, six weeks ago that Andy Dondre T V one because that's You know, That's not how you get the same base excited. Here's my only concern. Th so you're taking Justin Fields and you, Mitch Ryan Pace and the man Nicky have been up against it for a while, and let's be honest if they start slow. There's gonna be some conversations early in the year, but those guys getting fired and that's the reality of it. Mr. Whiskey didn't work out. And so any dog makes sense to start the season. "Pick went down the player from florida. That's a top so many people's draft the best prospects in distract period. You your your funky brooks in hollywood and media group bucky call daniel. He called him a gold jacket talent and now he's going to plan. What does this mean. And how does this inform what you think. The falcons about matt ryan and the rest of their new regime. First of all a penny for aaron rodgers thoughts on this but this is a belief in your soon to be thirty. Six year. old quarterback matt ryan has plenty of good football left. Let's go get him a weapon and see if we can't get back in the postseason. If you're the atlanta falcons. This is unique player. It's the highest grade. I've ever given to a tight end. He's an absolute freak show. You can't match up with him. You're wrong if you bring a corner you're wrong. Bring safety wrong. Bring a linebacker. And you look darren. Waller has done with. The las vegas raiders. This kid's going to do the same thing. For the atlanta falcons. The freak is thrown around. This is a free can argue. I mean as rich noted you said he's a goal jacket players so that's a home run. Pick number four. Then but yeah. He's a unicorn you just don't find guys that a built like this like you don't see guys in nba powerful body that can run. Rows like a wide receiver with outstanding hands and instincts. A natural fuel for the position calculates gives atlanta agai. They can work the middle of the field now. Maybe i'm the minority. I think atlanta falcons need to keep julio jones because in thinking they can relate can replace julio jones's production immediately. I think that would be missed up. I believe they are better served if you wanna get met right up and running. Julio jones on one side outfits in the middle kevin really on the other side eventually having a victim running back behind him that is how. He's played at his best when you look at the great years that we've seen for matt ryan is being where they had the full complement of weapons. I'm not in the business of removing weapons for matt ryan. If i'm trying to be great on that side of the ball get that makes sense for sure. And so after number four. We didn't get the quarterback off the board again in full number eleven. When the chicago bears made the big move once again like they. Did you know going up. Even though it was just one spot back in two thousand sixteen to get mitchell trubisky. This time they go up nine spots give a future one and a future four and a five in this year's draft trade to the eleven spot with the new york giants and make just didn't feel the fourth pick fourth quarterback off the board rather in this draft. Yeah bold move is the move that you know we can talk about and speculate. The bears going up to get a quarterback. But when you're on a make or break year your ryan pace in your matt nagy. Do you really have the luxury of waiting for young quarterback to pop and emerge but give them credit. Because the excitement that you're hearing and seeing from bears fans in the city of chicago you could give these as an opportunity to enjoy. Reprieve is all out trying to adjust in fields. Ready any dog serve as the alex smith like mentor for just feels what he's trying to get. I will say what i do like about. This is when you are playing in a cold weather environment when you're chicago playing in. The windy city is really important. Quarterbacks that you select understand how to deal with that. Being a big tin quarterback justin feels shining in their stage. It gives them a chance to be able to kinda deal with elements an understanding what you need to have when you need to get it done. I think this is a great opportunity for them. Yep no question. And i think that's big so 2017 rather said twenty six thousand two thousand seventeen. They moved up there to get mitchell trubisky in the draft. All right. so let's look in then. The last quarterback off the board in the first round the new england patriots have mac jones just kind of fall into their laps there. Fifteen after all the conjecture about the patriots team to trade up to get one of these top five quarterbacks and get mad jones. He's their guy bucky and so then. Are we going to see this year or relatively soon at some point here. This offense returned to pre cam newton form. I mean i think it will return to pre cam newton form. I will say this. This is going to be so interesting to see. When mac jones watson to the locker room or we're mack. Jones is on the quarterback Part of the practice field. He's standing beside cam newton. Because what we talked about with. Mac jones would he didn't have is like that a level arm talent and he doesn't have imposing physical stature man when he stands beside cam newton contrast until i do wonder becomes his offense What does it look like. What does it look like. When josh mcdaniels put it together. Moreover jones takes it over. What does it look like when it comes to the weapons around him because everyone has talked about you know. He was driving a cadillac alabama. The number first round fix that he was able to throw to in those things. Even the upgrade of the patriots made this year. They don't necessarily have a level pass sketches. And so what does this offense looked like when they finally put the finishing touches on it as they move away from the. Tom brady era into a new era of quarterbacking. We've josh mcdaniels As the playcalling and there goes the bell check and nick sabin connection one. More time there this time though. It is the quarterback Getting the stamp of approval. We certainly assume from nick to bill as they is the choice that number fifteen overall. So there's some of the big headlines there. Certainly the quarterbacks dominated the night there in the first fifteen picks but overall there is a theme that we saw kind of develop here and that was teams. Reuniting young talented quarterbacks with former college teammates and look at started really right at the very top with the jacksonville jaguars. Trevor lawrence. Getting his buddy travis. Ctn come over to jacksonville with their second. First round pick it number twenty five. We saw it again with the bengals. Making jomar chase the choice at five overall. Reuniting him with his old lsu buddy joe burrow of course is number. One overall pick last year those do at a phenomenal connection in their national championship season. Twenty nineteen very necks picked. Miami dolphins bay jalen waddell this election at six overall. Reuniting with to a chunk of iowa and then at number ten the philadelphia eagles trading up two spots to make sure they got devante smith and he gets reunited with his one time former alabama. Teammate jalen hurts. Who actually was one of the big reasons that devante smith gained alabama. Jalen hurts late. That recruiting pitch on him to come. So i think that's kind of an interesting theme here just to kind of set it up. I wanna get. Dj's thoughts here from the desk. In cleveland on nfl network on how the philadelphia eagles came to that choice with devante smith. I know. Eagles fans were frustrated last year that they passed on justin jefferson. In my opinion. They got it right this year. With avantis smith is a number one wide receiver. And i think philadelphia is going to be a big fan of this guy and i love the fact he can rock that number six. No double digits. Put that same number six you at alabama and take the philly. How do you. What do you make this. These four teams kind of putting this all together here to try to support their young quarterbacks. Look i really liked the concept and the reason why like pairing up to form. Teammates is because there's instant chemistry in connection that you have between those guys and so much of playing quarterback is about trust and communication and being able to have a guy that you've thrown thousands and thousands of passes to over the course of your collegiate career. An practice thinning games being able to kind of reestablish that connection at the pro level should have these young quarterbacks floor shutting to one that really stands out to me. Though is jacksonville travis. Ntn and trevor lawrence put into running back behind trevor lawrence. even though urban meyer kinda eluded to.

"That is from this morning on WDR, Eric Gallico. Optimum scouting and now going toe run or help run the Shrine Bowl. Eric just got that opportunity. Kansas City last year is exactly what he's just talking about, right. Just This is the This is the thing we don't have. Bills. Similar enough, I would say. And it you know it can work. It's similar enough, but it's also e don't know A layer was not the top range running back last year they reach for him. He was the first running back off the board. I think yes, he's not the home run hitter that e. T N is supposed to be. Um But there's a sure I mean. You know, highly rated offensive team passing game off the charts very successful one game from the Super Bowl, so not quite the same as Kansas City. But, yeah, I know it works as a comparison. I sort of I sort of. I don't think I made a sound, but I felt like I wanted to make a sound when he said. Something about he's going to touch the ball on half of your office and place for five years like No, That's not. That's why I wouldn't want to draft a running backs. I don't want to do that. I've got other guys I want to feed. But this is a piece. I think that could really help them. But I'm not interested in drafting a running back toe. Give him look. A million touches over over one year or five. I know I have assumed that I still would that. Doing that. It wouldn't be half or a million. I don't know what it would be, but it would be more It would be more. I think it just would have to be. Why else do it like, if you're if you're making that choice you want Something from him from that position that you were getting, and I just think that that would have to mean opportunities because you're not going to get it without opportunities. I don't think that's right. I think I owe you want the threat. Of someone that can hurt you. So I don't need to give running backs the balm or or give that running back the ball more than I gave it to Moss or Singletary last year, But when I give it to him, I think it will impact how the defense is gonna play me. Like, you know, theoretically, if it goes right right if it if he if he if he hits on plays early in the season, teams are going to prepare to have to stop a home, run hitting running back and that is another element that could change how you cover. Stefan digs and the back end of the field and just lots of stuff I think could trickle down. So that's why I really I'm gonna I will fight tooth and nail against. They're going to run the ball more because they draft this guy. I just don't I know. I know the the temptation and the fear that you have, and it's not unfounded. I recognize that cause teams that draft say Quan Barkley and you know what they want to feed those guys. But again, those are top five top 10. McCaffrey was eight You said this is the 30th pick. I don't feel like I'm gonna have to validate choosing him. By feeding him. I'm just going to use him to impact both. You know, I think he can be productive when I do. Give him the ball. And I think the threat of him being on the field will help the passing game too. So I don't see it changing the dynamic of what? You know what makes their offense go. Dramatically at all. I think it's a compliment. I get that I'd bet heavily that that happens. Not only what I take that side. I'd bet heavily that whoever they take their is whatever position he's just going to be used significantly or else they should pick someone else in my opinion. Here is Tom next. Hi, Tom. Yes. How do you doing? Good time. Thank you. All right, so just a little My on my face if this was a perfect world This whole rumor about the bills Trading up for Travis Ctn. Was put out by Brandon Dean just to mess with Bulldog. Why? Why? Why? Why does that mean so much to you? Why would that be Your your idea of a perfect world? Well, I I just think what I what? I heard the rumor. First of all I was like that does not sound like something Brandon being would do because like you guys to talk about for Now a year like this is a passing offense and now to use draft capital to trade up to get a running back. It just didn't seem like Beamish to be so I know what you say that I don't think it is either. I'm not there at all, though. I don't know what we know about. We know that he's drafted running backs in the first two days the last two years. We know that he's traded up all the time. Like a part of that story. Yesterday was trading up. He's on Lee traded up. Since he's been here. And you know the Chiefs are these things. I'll use them again like that. They're sort of this description and they did it. So I don't know that being wouldn't make a move like that. I feel like maybe he is the type to do it myself. Well, I'd love to think Bulldog is in his head like that. Yeah, sure. I'd love for bulldog to be and everybody's head. You know, right? Maybe I don't know what you think about that. I mean, it's I think I think I'm taking this is a compliment. I'm not sure if I'm being you know, had by doing that, but I feel like the way the caller said that I'll take that as a common here. Let me say one more thing about this. And, you know, we'll just thank you, Tom. So I said before, here's another reason not to do it. The bill's head, an amazing here and there there was, if you'll permit the phrasing. There was very little not toe like about their team. They name of position you were either. Thrilled or you're okay. But even Singletary, um us like They didn't get your beat. They didn't They were bad like you. You You had a great team. Walk away from last year, being miffed that they didn't give Kansas City a better game and be closer to winning that game. And making the Super Bowl like that, to me is the conclusion they were great. One. I think in this league That there is a thin line there. And his greatest. They were That can get away from you. For different reasons. They have been very lucky with injuries for three years, like their defense just never gets hurt. You had Milano You know in there, but the Hughes and white and their safeties are just Edmund's. They're always healthy. They're always on the field. Admin was compromised almost all year, but, yeah, I mean, they played good fortune. Yeah. I mean, I played. I don't even need him because he's not. For Davis White or, you know, certain other guys, but like the safety's air Sochi, and they're older, and they were just always on the field. They have been very just the numbers have been very lucky. With injuries. And you have aged and you have just sort of a natural course of things. I just think As great as they were. You never assume and the line is very thin. I make this point about receivers anyway, when we talk about receivers Four corners, I guess because I like the idea of corner of pick 30. You can't be too deep. You draft a receiver at 30. Somebody's going to tell you that you didn't need that. You need other things more. But I mean, again. Look at what happened to their outstanding receiver corps last year. Diggs was hurt in the playoffs. Beasley broke his leg. And played anyway. Brown was in an hour all year like you you could have. I know it's crazy, and you don't know what's going to happen. But if they had one more guy good. So you go into this year. That's you often see why it's every position you quarterback. You're not gonna worry about it. Right. You're not going to have to quarterback here in the name of well if I fail and gets her I want to have Justin Fields like you're not doing that. Or special teams, but most of your starting positions?.

We'll start with travesty Chance so that Woz. Let's see. Let's see. It would have been done months and talking about Travis Ctn, Clemson play by play, Man, Marcel Louise Jack recovered. Luisa Excuse me, covers the bills for ESPN dot com, is down with Bulldog last week and then the podcast comment. From Todd McShay about Travis. He tended the bills. That's where we'll start. Eric Delko is from Optimum Scouting is joining us on the Western Hotline. Eric, It's Howard and Jeremy. Good morning, Sir. How are you today? I'm doing great. Are you guys doing this draft week? I'm ready for Thursday. Man. Thursday at around 11. 30 PM I'm ready. Okay, so it's gonna be. It's gonna be interesting, too, because I think you mentioned the bills in particular the running back market's going to really have to figure out this first round this year. You guys were gonna go. It's gonna be a lot of turmoil for the bills on Thursday night. Okay, so let's start there and and maybe they are. Who knows if that's true or not that they're trying trying to trade up, But let's start with Travis Et en and get your thoughts on him first and foremost. Yeah, He's the most explosive running back. I think in this draft class and really the only running back in this class that has both really impressive why ranging downfield speed and can be a three down, running back, and that's really important. Why I think teams value him so highly You can get speed back and a third down back like Michael Carter from North Carolina in round, maybe as early as two but likely round three and four. There's a couple those guys in this draft, but there's not many guys work. Explosives are outstanding Pass catchers Travis CPN Probably about the cup was past catcher in the 2020 F L draft class and he could be a three down, running back and I think that's how tells that he is. I would not be surprised at all if he is The fifth off a playmaking offensive weapon taken off the board after Kyle pits to mark Chase Jim and waddling Devante Smith, and that's how you gotta think of travesty together that he's going to be the fifth Explosive player out the board and his feeling ranges from maybe it ties the 16th overall pick and I don't think it gets out of the first round, for sure. Okay, So the difference is I was going to ask, I guess Harris and maybe Joe Vontae Williams. I know you mentioned the other kid it in and North Carolina. What? One of the main differences. Then let's say between Harrison et en specifically Harris. Do you not see the same receiving ability there that you might see from ET en Certainly not the same nausea. Harris could do it. He's shown it in limited and we've seen Ah lot of the album of running backs last decade thinking, Hey, they can't do on third down and they figured out the NFL are able to do it. D J L That's not a good job. On that rolls well draw his NFL career, but the difference is the Tien Is NFL ready and really impressive as a route runner. Clinton was moving him in motion moving him in the slot. He can run around in that area. I think he's the only running back. In this draft class with over 100 targets Minutes college career, which is really, really impressive, so they're not the same. And that says I think GM as a pass catcher and really out in the perimeter is just more explosive than technology. Harris. No, not be. Harris is for more traditional. He can work between the tackles and a really high level. I think you'd better inside don't run of Nietzschean, so there are differences. I mean nausea. Harris is more Better player on 1st and 2nd down, But as we've seen in the NFL now, including the Bills offense It's not as much of the first most only a first down, running back because really on second now you're thinking about passing as well and that's why you get so valuable. So all right, Let's say let's say the bills. Do you want to add our running back? You know, the GM talked about Brandon being had mentioned last week. You know, he likes the guys. They have You like Singletary likes Moss. But they don't have quote a home run hitter. So is eating and the only guy who fits that description. If not, what about Harris or Williams? And I mean, he turns off the board now, Eric, What about the other two guys? Whether a 30 or Trade back trade up a few slots could either one of them fit that home run hitter and would either guys still be a good pickup for the bills? I think yes, I think it depends on how much they want to feel that meat because based off what I believe I think oflove on office has kind of said that publicly that et and really fits that mold as that big play running back, and I think he's going to add a lot as a third down guy the way he's acting Austin about Devon Singletary can't do so. I think overall running back is indeed we want someone to be a bell cow and the exact Boston tomb or both. Red Zone in short yardage guy in 17. Terror is a change of pace that I think Magic Harris or around to running back legs about Ted Williams and pray, serve and by the way, Trey sermon is on the same level of Devante Williams for a lot of teams. I talked to their kind of three and four bunched together, but I think if they want to feel the need One of those three guys work to the 1st and 2nd down workhorse, and they've got to figure out the rest later. But if you want to dynamic offense of weapons add one more piece of its bills often each year. That guy that they want him almost for sure they're gonna happen. Move up, maybe a tie as the top 2023 picks together. So where do you think he could go? Then? Because again in this discussion of The speculation about the bills moving up. It was well there. If they did move up, they'd want to get ahead of 23 24. 25. Jets Pittsburgh Jaguars Where if he's gone before, then where does he tea and go? Yeah, he very well could. I think I think kind of the 25 area Much of the Jaguars. That's where they want him. But I think by the early twenties, it's going to be a jets like team that taken for knee or someone moves up to get and I don't like to get out of the top 2023 picks again. The feeling I believe is the Arizona Cardinals. They want to add one more offensive weapon. They don't you, James Counter or Chase Edmunds as the guy next year, so if they don't get a top receiver like maybe devices, Smith falls to them. I think they're his feeling ET and the Dolphins that 18 need a running back. They like beauty and a lot. The Washington football team. They like Antonio Gibson, but they're not a post, adding one more offensive playmaker and again I stress each yen is the fifth best offensive playmaker in this draft, so if you don't get Hit with the top three receivers, and you want to add a dynamic weapons, your offense, each against that next guy, And that's why when it's Arizona, Miami, Washington and then no proven the Jets. The Jaguars et m gonna go someplace pretty early. And this is also it seems like just the hype..

How "Lil' Ol' Clemson" Overcame the Odds

"Here today to talk about Little Clemson. First of all where where did that name come from. Davos swinney has been using it basically since he took over as the head coach back in two thousand eight and I know we're not supposed to be here. We're does willow beer but we about the Tigers man. I'm so proud and just quickly remind us. How much has little clemson accomplished in the last five years? And how do those accomplishments stack up against some of the all-time great teams. This will be their fourth national championship game in the past five years and obviously they have won. Two of the past three national championships backpedaling Lawrence flips absorb open wide open just native. Where's the pen strengthens? Its the championship game really witnessing one of the all-time great runs right. After or maybe you know in conjunction with the dynasty that Alabama has had attack territory with very likely a victory formation and a fifty fifth win but this clemson senior class. The Tigers Tigers reclaimed their crowd by four Alabama. We are really truly talking about one of the great runs. We've seen in this sport and yet they seemingly get no respect at least if you listen into what Dabo Sweeney has to say we win to the team that beat South Carolina. And it's we we get clemson out. It's the dad gummed state so it's big because you know they can't vote us out. I mean we gotta we gotTA WE GOTTA go thirty. You know I mean we got no choice forced but Stewart I wanted to talk to you about some of the things Clemson has had to overcome to get where they are today because in some ways it makes her accomplishments even more remarkable. So let's start with the schools location. This is a school that is in the tiniest towns announced in college football. The main drag is a half mile if that they have one of everything and only one of everything one starbucks Fox Walmart. You've got this eighty thousand seat stadium hundred fifty thousand people rolling into the town on the weekends. it's incredible bull and but then they all leave. You know Monday through Friday. We kind of have our own world and it's named Clemson. It's not named university. University of their state and Frankly University of South Carolina has a much bigger fan base in that state. CLEMSON's not even the biggest Followed team in their own state. And I imagine it's harder to build that fan support when you don't have the state name in your school's name 'cause fans can identify so strongly with the state there from. Yeah I mean obviously the one big exception in College Football History Notre Dame that has a true national following but that goes all the way back to the nineteen twenties and and new rockne is taking them on the train and playing games all around the country. It's truly unique when you think about the kinds of programs that we're used to seeing at the top of the polls the Alabama is the Ohio states. It's the US's these are schools with big huge national fan. Bases Clemson truly is still even with all the success mostly a regional school well and a lot of people might not realize this but clemson has had to recruit locally for the most part I mean. It's remarkable if you look at their roster. How many of the guys as our from North and South Carolina Georgia in Tennessee every program? You know the the core of their recruiting class is going to be in their backyard. But clemson's up until recently. He was almost entirely from their backyard. And really that mirrors Funston as a school their alumni base something like seventy percent of the alums live in three states South Carolina North Carolina and Georgia. This is not the kind of place where anywhere in the country you go. You're going to find clumps in Bar And one other big thing. That's working against Clemson. Is They play in the ACC weaker conference where where they don't really have a rival and it's almost like people forget about clemson during the regular season because you know they don't have very many marquee games. Yeah everybody watched. Trevor Lawrence and Travis E. T. N. and and T- Higgins in last year's national championship game and saw how great they they were and then the season starts in people. Stop watching the game. They played against Texas. Ain't ammon week to was the most watched game they played this season A little over six million viewers. That was not even one of the top twenty most watch games in college football this season. And if you look at that list of the top Twenty Games Ohio Hi oh state was in five of them. LSU was in four of them Michigan. who wasn't even all that good was in three of them? When talks about lack of respect the thing that bothered him most is this year? was that none of those star players Trevor Lawrence WHO everybody assumes will be the number one pick when he's coming off his junior season travis? CTN has been one of the best running backs in the country the last three years. None of those guys made the heisman ceremony. And none of those guys were even finalists for the award for the best is player at their position in. That's not because they're not great players. It's because nobody watched them this season. How has clemson been able to overcome some of these kind of systemic? Systemic challenges. The fact that they aren't this historical powerhouse. The fact that they're in this tiny town in the middle of nowhere South Carolina would have been the keys to to them building this program into what it's become. Yeah well it really all starts Dabo swinney. He is a extremely unique personality in college. Football one moment along the way that I think have stuck with everybody was Dave beat Notre Dame in practically a monsoon in twenty fifteen regular season and they interview him after the game on. ABC what nine listen. We're giving scholarships give you stipends in tails in a place to live. We're giving nice uniforms. I give you good service tonight. It was big. Well Gee Bring Your own God put some dads and to me that personifies daboh like. That's not something. Most coaches coaches would say in a post game interview and kind of set the tone I think from their Dabo. Swinney is the fun coach. He's the coach who when they built their new football facility. They put in a PUTT. PUTT course welcome to the outdoor pavilion miniature. Golf Renfro just happened to catch the game winner in the National Championship Against Alabama. We'll see what he's got here. Your place on Punsalan rest for the weary. We'll at hunter and so that became their brand there. The Fun School there the place you want to go if you WANNA play college. Football get an education education and have a lot of fun doing it and to amplify that message. Clemson was really ahead of the curve. I think With how they used social media to appeal to recruits they are constantly putting out videos And other images that show exactly that that show that take you inside side. The Locker Room and inside the facility in show you how much fun they're having Show you Dabo swinney dancing in the locker room after a win Stewart. How would you describe Devil's dance? Moves dance moves are about a clunky and awkward as you'd expect from a middle aged dude but but certainly in keeping with his his personality. There's also a video that they posted of Disney filming a football ball movie at Clemson last night. Any five thousand people here. We have to shoot three plays and the entrance from valley in a half of a half time. Half time the real players went off the field and a whole bunch of actors and Clemson. Uniforms came running onto the field and the and the the crowd cheered them on. And and you know made it seem like a real football game and the footage is going to be spectacular. It's one of the three loudest crowds in Clemson visit history. And what role has the rest of the Clinton coaching staff played in the rise of the Tigers when Dab oh I started getting a going at Clemson they weren't a national powerhouse yet. They were starting to get better. He did something that was a little unusual at the time and basically took a lower salary for himself in order for them to spend more on. assistant coaches. Because at that time. They weren't necessarily rolling in money like some of the programs that they were trying to compete against. They they were paying their coordinators top dollar money and those coordinators played a huge role. I mean they were the ones that certainly Chad. Morris was the one that recruited and coach Sammy Watkins Skins and certainly does Shawn Watson. The guys that got this run started now. They are rolling in money. An data was making nine million dollars a year. And that's you know that there's no longer a disadvantage for Clemson. But they were very smart about how they went about managing that in the early years of this run.
