"Mean, I've been in the PX at camp kinser in Okinawa and I hear Tim. And I turn around and it's like it's a dude that I went to high school with that was two classes removed and yeah, and again, transitioned through another recruiter and then as soon as I signed up, which is another funny story, is I went and swore in the week before September 11th. Oh, wow. Yeah, which is like, and it's not like funny, but and I don't know how involved you were in the being looking at the military around that time. I was a junior and I think my brother, I haven't taken my trip to my brother's yet. So I really my journey started when I took a trip to my brother's at Travis Air Force Base. I was like, oh, he's got a nice life. You know? And then I'm looking at it. I'm looking at the air force, and I'm looking at all that nice things in the air force. I joined the Marine Corps. Separate story. But no, that was my journey. And then September 11th happened later around that time. And then yeah, I think, three for me, it was O three and the Iraq invasion. I was still in the delayed entry program, but it sounds like you were in. Yeah, I swore in well, I finished everything I needed to swear in, but I had had shoulder surgery the year prior to join the Marine Corps. My recruiter, that was another benefit of getting in is I had a shoulder instability. And they're like, you have to get the surgery. You might be able to get in, but you need to get the surgery if you want to be like no issues. So I went up to week before September 11th. And it was like I look back on it and I remember going to maps and everybody being happy and laughing. And I had to go back to bring documents the next month. And I did the whole overnight, you know, I watched Lord of the Rings, I think, or something like something that was like new and hot. I splurged like the 1899 for the hotel movie. That's the only one I'm gonna talk about on record, but. There were people like shaking. And this was an interesting part, I mean, if you talk to older veterans, where you saw a lot of people who connected the military with a job vice a professor, profession, which they might actually have to sacrifice a significant more than they originally intended to. And I remember like watching a dude chain smoke and I was like, are you all right? He's like, man, I ship out and I'm like, you know, at this time, she knew the invasion into Afghanistan was like, I believe the mew is just about to land. I was like, oh man, what are you going to be like, a PJ? He's like, um, I'm going in the coast guard, bro, they send us in first. And I was like, I respect your choice to center them. However, comma, you can probably put down those cigarettes, man. It's probably gonna hurt you more than Taliban right now. I love those delayed energy programs. You look at each other and those are the sticker coast guard maybe Marine Corps. You're all like, are you in about what you don't even know about? Yeah. And that's another thing that's just funny because everybody's hyped up on what their recruiters or their relatives tell them. And especially when you stay in the Marina long enough, you know, the phony one of my funniest jokes are funny things that I find is when somebody's like, oh, do you know Jimmy Smith? I'm like, oh, yeah, he's a good guy. He's in the National Guard in Indiana. I'm like, well, I'm an active duty marine. Absolutely. We met in Afghanistan and O three. Deployed 9 times spent time both in Iraq and Afghanistan. I talked to many of them spend time in Afghanistan, which, by the way, it's crazy now that Baldwin is gone. It's crazy that there were another reason I do, I talked to marines and other veterans that have been there in 2010, 2011 has an 8. 2004, you were there in O four. I get a feeling that it was a little different a little less Spartan as conditions. Is that accurate? More so. So I was very lucky in that when I went to Afghanistan, we went to Cornwall valley. So I worked out a camp blessing, which is adjacent. Now, most people know a sad about because we actually the year we were there. I thought about went from a field to a minor air station. And it became aerobic hauben area. Prior to that Assad about, which is down the road. But it was, it was what I envisioned combat in the military to be like, we hiked everything up and down mountains, weeks without showers, weeks without mail a sat phone that was a ten minute call once a month. One week out of the wire, a week on guard, you know, doing whatever else we needed to do. It was as austere and challenging, physically, mentally, emotionally, and not to be braggadocious, but we were fighting an enemy that was very, very well trained very well supported adjacent to Pakistan. To like, and if you look, it's we're in that timeline, the easiest way to explain to people who aren't familiar with the area is third marines came in. We were the first battalion three, but the first battalion in that lineage. And then it transferred over to tenth mountain and then that the restrepo arming units came in and then you saw some of this stuff with clean Roma Shay and that area was like that a platoon to a company of insurgents, Taliban, whatever you want it local anti coalition militia, whichever title of the week was could could just appear. And that was one of the things that blew my mind in comparison to some of my other combat deployments was we truly never had the advantage. There were times we had individuals injured and they hiked out like there was no medevac. There were times where we ran out of water. There were times where we ran out of food. There were times where we were down to two magazines, three magazines, a piece, which in comparison to like tech or something isn't crazy, but when you talk to a lot of G wat veterans, like I was in planning briefs for later deployments and people are like, oh, it's going to take 12 minutes for air. We don't know if this is a good situation and you're like, man, I remember the time that we were literally getting pounded by our recoilless rifle and we waited 35 minutes for an Apache to do one gun run and you're like, it's perspective on the situation, but it built I think it build a very good foundation for me personally and professionally to keep a calm head which served me not even not just in combat but just in life. So it's kind of like my rant on that. And then the best part was Iraq was really kicking at that time. So I came back and from that deployment and I felt like king of the world, you know, my thighs were like that big from hiking, my waist was like this big. I had huge traps. We just, I was shooting, shooting, you know, a Lance Corporal who had just done a very tough deployment and people were like, well, at least you weren't in Iraq. And I was like,.

You're doing double duty this week. I'll talk to you on friday all right looking forward to it. I guess it's pointless for me to say i love you. I'm very fond of you. See you later. Kirk is getting closer. It's fine. I'll take that now. Now we were talking about jerry brown. The governor of california back in the seventies. That's correct. it's interesting. When i look back at the the history because honestly i wanted to reevaluate my position on the issue of immigrants. I wanted to reevaluate daca. Was i being a hypocrite by having the feelings that i had with immigrants coming in and so after doing a lot of research i found some hypocrisy with positions that allow the Political leaders took themselves. Well here's a. Here's just a sample of what. Some of the leaders like obama and bill clinton and harry. Reid used to say about immigration. Those who enter the country illegally and those who employ them disrespect the rule of law and they are showing disregard for those who are following the law. All americans not only in the states most heavily affected but in every place in this country are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country. The jobs they home otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants the public service. They use impose burdens on our taxpayers. We have to listen to the concerns.

New cases of coronaviruses spreading outside of China
"As of today we have fifteen cases of cove it nineteen that have been detected in the United States with only one new case detected in the last two weeks we also have three cases among Americans repatriated from Wuhan and forty two cases among Americans repatriated who'd been stuck on the diamond princess in Japan two months on the corona virus Hey everybody Kate Delaney first you're the president he appoints pence to head charge against the corona virus then you just heard health and Human Services secretary Alexander ETS are stressing I'm in charge of this task force and talked about the corona virus following the announcement that pence would leave the US effort to battle that outbreak you must have said it three times I'm in charge listen I don't care who's in charge just tells whether we have to wear a mask and just how bad this is going to get stocks are spiraling pandemic has been mentioned at the CDC's website page on the corona virus says that the potential public health threat posed by CO visited the nineteen I'm gonna short cut it is hi both globally and to the United States so do I the centers for disease control and prevention or do I trust the vice president who's Mike in charge listen do I think pence can't collaborate with the pros the doctors everyone else and be the point person of course I think he can do that but we don't want any battles of who is in charge when it comes to letting us know what is and what isn't true because this is what happens and mis information leads to problems and that can lead to I believe the spread of a virus if you don't know what you were supposed to do I talked to doctor earlier today and said listen should I order these mass my family's supposed to go to Ireland in may who knows if that's going to happen because let me tell you in Europe especially Italy they are very worried about how much this virus is spreading and how easily it spreads and we here in the United States for anybody listening from the US because I know we have others who listen to the show outside of our borders thank you for that but the first person in the U. S. tested positive for the corona virus with no link whatsoever whatsoever to foreign travel this was a person in northern California how the person got this dreaded respiratory disease they don't know the CDC is saying it's possible it could be an instance of community spread be the first time it happened in the United States there's a first time for everything and they're also leaving the door open that the patient might have been exposed to a return traveler who is infected this is my fear all along as somebody who was just on a plane and in California for a week and got hacked over meaning right behind me then surrounding me on a plane this was my concern is that you're on a plane who knows where that person bounced from one wherever unlikely there but someplace else where they might have brushed against it so the state of California is calling the case its first instance of community transmission first case so to me this is scary that's the scary part we get the floating diseased ship the diamond princess we understand that we understand how people were infected there that makes sense this one doesn't make sense and I think this is pretty scary that what they're saying for example hi John Hopkins center for health security note health security that confirming this one patient there is a good chance that there are other people infected in the country and the virus is circulating on detected so what we need to know is what's the surveillance policy and how many more out there and how do you respond to that The Washington Post did a good story on tracking the spider web an excellent story on tracking the spider web of what could be when it comes to the corona virus just quickly a little more on the Solano county person and this week this was reported to the California department of public health they're being treated at UC Davis Medical Center and of course Solano county is home to Travis Air Force base hundreds of Americans from China were brought in there from that cruise ship and they've been kept in quarantine many have been released so now the health department is tracing people who might have come in contact with that person so that they can figure out one if more people are infected with it but perhaps with who they could have come across so to me this is something to be concerned about I mean it listen there's complications with this there's confusion support communications on the corona virus and mapping it figuring out how figuring out where all of that is so vital no I mentioned Italy so quickly I'll tell you what it's like in Italy Italy meant one of the most beautiful countries ever is that not on your bucket list or was it not on your bucket list hopefully not anytime soon because in Italy boy they're having a really rough time of trying to chase that spider webs down and the reason why is because we keep every time I turn around somebody else I has contracted it so the numbers in Italy just climate and their people are ordering and wearing the masks almost everywhere so if you're traveling in Italy in anywhere else internationally mask mask mask it up four hundred cases as of an hour ago confirms in Italy and in fact in the hospitals they're trying to scramble as much as they can to get enough beds and quarantine areas to be able to have more people are coming to be quarantined frankly because they keep discovering more people with it and of course they're sanitizing every area they can they're trying to contain it the World Health Organization said that for the first time the virus was spreading faster outside of China where it originated globally more than eighty thousand people in about forty countries have been infected with the coronavirus still the vast majority are in China but Italy hit incredibly hard if we were to look at a map and I would give you a key you know what a key is when you have different colors like let's color in this area this is where the bulk of it is I mean it's Italy is just covered the boot is covered some of the worst infected areas Lombardi right around my lan very close to Venice twelve people died in Italy so the government is taking this serious they're worried they're trying to trace it like I said they're having problems in having enough beds to figure out where they're going to put people schools universities

state could soon be looking for you as KCRW's Kaylee wells reports a new proposal being considered by the state legislature we'll put residents of the jury pool who have traditionally been missed when you received a jury summons it's because you've been pulled randomly from a DMV lists of ID cards and driver's licenses or from a county list of voters so if you don't have an ID and you're not registered to vote you've probably never been summoned state senator Scott winner from the bay area says that's unfairly skewed our juries the people on those lists tend to be wider and wealthier than the general population for example forty seven percent of Californians are black Asian or Latino but they make up only forty one percent of registered voters so winners bill would expand the jury pool whose request services in in during investment in the future of public radio audience sunshine for your presence day Monday right now in Dana point it's fifty one degrees forty nine in Culver city it's seven oh seven this is morning edition from NPR news I'm David during and I'm no well king good morning more than eleven hundred former department of justice officials are calling on Attorney General William Barr to resign they wrote an open letter accusing bar of doing the president's personal beating and violating the department's rules those rules say that legal decisions must be impartial and insulated from political influence and they say bar broke that rule when he intervened in the sentencing recommendation of president trump's friend Roger stone accord signed that letter she served as the department's acting assistant Attorney General for national security from two thousand sixteen to two thousand seventeen the morning this record good morning why did you sign a letter well I I in addition to having served as the acting assistant Attorney General I also was a prosecutor in the DC US attorney's office for over twenty years culminating as a criminal division chief and so I myself have many many times stood in front of judges of the US District Court in the US court of appeals and made representations on behalf of the department of justice that I felt certain I was authorized to make and that I had the full backing of the department behind me and my concern about Mr bars actions and certainly seeming to be at the at the will of the president is that it damages the credibility of prosecutors who every day day in and day out here in front of the judges and in courts and represent the United States and the American people and my fear is that there are some judges that will have concerns about whether in particular in particularly in politically charged cases will have concerned about whether those individual prosecutors what they say has the backing of the department or with apartment potentially will will be switching positions in furtherance of political wishes the eleven hundred people who signed this letter war all were all former officials do you still talk to people who work inside the DOJ and and if I may ask what are they what are they telling you how are you today well I don't a call my former from colleagues and asked their opinions about things like this I really don't I don't put them in that awkward position I do I do sometimes hear from people who who reach out to me and I think they are feeling very demoralized they're feeling very concerned about the reputation and credibility is the department and you know concerned about these internal guidelines and norms and boundaries that protect the independence of the department and it's prosecution of cases they're concerned about the erosion of that we had a guest on the show a former justice department official who said with respect to the Roger stone sentencing in the end a judge will make the to shin on how much prison time Roger stone cats in a sense is suggesting to me that this is maybe not as serious a problem as we think it is in the end it will come down to a judge what do you think about that I agree with that and and I've said that publicly as since last week that in this case judge Amy Berman Jackson she presided over Roger stone's trial she is in a perfect position to assess what Mr stone dead wrong assess the sentencing guidelines assess the the charges and make a decision about his sentencing but this is just one more instance of what appears to certainly bleed Mister Barr putting his thumb on the scale of justice and interfering and so this is why I think you're seeing so much concern and so many former prosecutors you know want to say something publicly about this were you at all relieved when Attorney General Barr gave that interview to ABC news and said essentially I would like the president to stop tweeting it undermines me did that ease any of your concern at all I absolutely agree with what he said and I'm very glad that he that he said it and I do think it will put some prosecutors at ease I do think it's a little bit too little too late and I I should be clear that although I know that that statement you know calls for Attorney General Barr to resign I think there's a lot of other important things in the statement I think most of us don't really think he will resign and really I mean I'd be happy if he just starts abiding by the rule of law abiding by DOJ guidance that he should not be putting his thumb as I mentioned put his thumb on the scale of justice based on the president's political wishes in the seconds we have left me ask do you think he will stop well that's a hard judgment to make because they've been so many instances since he took office a year ago and and so I I just hope that concerned about prosecutors leaving the department and the reputation apartment will encourage him to to abide by those long standing norms former acting assistant Attorney General for national security merry McCord thank you you're welcome in a rock anti government protests have been going since October protesters are demanding a new kind of government free of corruption and Iranian influence they've paid a heavy price with hundreds killed recently they've come under even more pressure almost crushing the protest movement here's appears Jana raft back that.

"For evacuees that were flown in from China from China's coronavirus hot zones have apparently now been hospitalized with possible symptoms of the virus after landing at Travis Air Force base in Fairfield you recall last week about two hundred let two hundred and one two hundred and one passengers were screened for viral symptoms at Travis now apparently of those four are showing signs of the virus a child was hospitalized with a fever on Wednesday that's not a surprise of course they're keeping people separated but the here's the deal and and I will talk about this a little bit last week in about the the nature look at the nature of these viruses and my expertise is the only in an area sort of loosely affiliated loosely affiliated with yelp the medical field I'm more of a and what happened with me was I was trained in the military on infectious disease as a part of learning about biological warfare and you know we talk about viruses things like that so in this case I see that we are you have the number of deaths climbing and the number of total infections climbing in the number of total infections probably under reported in so we're probably the deaths but here's the thing it's still there the percentage of people who are dying from it is still very small and you compare that to the flu most people walk around I got I got the Sniffles I've got the flu now every single year in the United States of America the flu reaches epidemic level every year if you go to the CDC's website in the look of the flu you can see the charts every single year now pandemic is a larger threshold but it reaches epidemic level every single year you see the line you see it move up the seat arching you see come back down again it's the bell curve and if you're worried about catching this in your taken some precautions then your then chances are you're also taking the same precautions you take if you were trying to avoid the flu but that's why we do flu vaccines in this country because we're trying to avoid pandemic levels of flu problems who kills people most of the time when people think they have the flu they do not have the flu and when somebody says I have the flu Mike I say how do you know you have the flu it's somebody test you and tell you you have the flu no well then you're just sick okay you have a cold you have a chest cold nose cold whatever head cold chances are you don't have the flu it's a misnomer to say that you have a flu just because you're sick or you have a fever so one of the big things that has come up is that people get very paranoid about this outbreak it is a serious problem and it is being dealt with through the world World Health Organization right people are doing stuff just to try to stop the spread of this and people are being quarantined in their being held in places where they need to stay there for fourteen days and show no symptoms but it's very fourteen days from ever from the last time they were exposed to actually exposed to it so these four people at Travis if it turns out that they have it that everybody that was around them around the time that they showed symptoms would all then pretty much have to start fourteen days over again but I'm not sure how they've got it set up over there so maybe everybody's separated when I'm I'm imagine this in fact that was hospitalized had a fever was a work more carefully and closely cared for so they screen the passengers going into Travis and and they're in quarantine for now and now we know that four of them are showing signs flu like symptoms that's fever runny nose things like that to start with get you updated on that some political news we're gonna get to hear after the break some videos out there showing Joe Biden it comparing himself to the judge it's kind of funny I've got some audio on that so see that.

He said, good luck. Dislike good luck. And he patted him on the shoulder. And he went over and paid for our drinks. And I knew that wasn't good. That was probably not good. When Dave left. He left from California from Travis Air Force base in may of nineteen sixty seven and I can still see right now. The men filing up the steel steps onto the plane.
