He also hired disease dead-end to go in and infect the enemy defeated combatants were often treated to disemboweling flaying Alive boiling and of course impalement. A Chat with Andy Cohen, Co-Founder of Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories
"This is it manner. Part of the cars that matters equation has more to do with the people that own them and drive them and love them that it does about the cars themselves. That's where my guests dandy. Colin is really just exactly the kind of person we WANNA talk to get a sense of of how cars that matter have affected him. How in many ways? He's been one of the arbiters of taste that has helped to determine Herman which cars do matter. India president of Beverly Hills motoring accessories company that began in one thousand nine hundred seventy six back at a time when well cars were. We're not quite the uniform transportation pods that they are today. So we WANNA talk to Andy about a lot of those things Andy. Welcome to the show and We look forward to learn a little bit about your car. Is that matter sure. Thank you very much. I was at a young age. Twenty years old. Living in New New York Long Island to be interested in cars at that time was very looked down upon. What part of Long Island did you go up on? Great and what year are you talking about. Say Graduated High School in Sixty four so in sixty four. You think people look down on someone who was a car aficionado in New York. Oh boy do over at Roosevelt raceway and near Roosevelt field where they had all those great straightaways and we could see what our cars could really do when someone had to give somebody some cute girl the pink slip of our car before we showed off the new engine. We put into a car that would otherwise have gone very slowly and then a surprised everybody with the power behind our hot Rod. I would bet that you ruled the roost back. Then well I I did that I could. Everybody remembers their first car. The ones they saved up for even built from scratch per andy talked his father into buying a sixty four pontiac. Tempest tempest within three twenty six cubic inch v eight and a three speed stick but then six months later they came out with that. She te'o and I'm thinking God. Why didn't may have that when I got my dad by car so I have the scheme us what away for the weekend with my mother to Florida and I said took me and my friends we're GONNA make this tempest into GTO? So I went into a reckoning. You heard I bought a three eighty nine cubic inch motor. Because that's what they were. You're from a Grand Prix and I proceeded to concoct a story that I was riding on the boulevard. I hit a rock broke the oil pan at Emmett if the engine I didn't fall out. Yeah so have this game I went and get the motor from the wrecking yard. What to put it in it was completely different than the GTO engine and it took four months? Let's get everything all about at the play hood at the custody headers. I mean everything was different. My Dad was taking a bus and very mad at me and I just said New New York wasn't a place for me. I didn't like the call. I didn't like the weather I didn't like crowds. They didn't like anything so I said southern California's it so to move out here. You're sixty seven nine hundred sixty seven. I didn't know anyone I didn't even know which way to go so I got off. The Plane Got Century Boulevard. went to the four or five Rui and said go north or South. I don't know because I didn't know anyone turned left and went north. I got to the top of the pass going down into the San. Fernando Valley was September thirty degrees hotter as they went down into the valley. I loved it because the hotter the better so I went down. The Hill got off at Ventura. Boulevard saw Holiday Inn and kind of made that my center for a few years Earth. A great story. I don't even know if that's repeatable then Robert. He moved out here in sixty seven. That's right at the man that's when you wanted to be in the car scene gene so it begs the question Andy. What was your first car when you got out here? My first car that I built actually was a nineteen forty four woody. That already had a three twenty seven. I'm an engine in it and I actually have restored three times. They still have. It's black and has corvette motor independent suspension drives drives like my maserati fantastic so I got the combination combination of of all those things and I actually bought my first Ferrari in nineteen seventy eight. It was two three eight one of my friends who have bought it from was far Dillard to Mexico and he said Handy you interested in buying Daytona spyder. I said sure tell me about it. This was a nine hundred seventy eight. It was owned by a prince. Turki I think is still around his predecessors are in Newport Report Beach Daytona spider and ill will not one of those fake streams ruined and in fact talk about like before the Internet. The only way I could find out if it was is a railway. Todo Spider was semi telex the primary factor. And then three years later. I found out that that car was the first Daytona spyder made. What a fantastic art art? That's one of the cars of everybody's dreams. I mean they tone. A spider is an iconic thing and boy is certainly created a sensation. Such that there was so many saws all taken AAC into the roofs of perfectly good Daytona. coupes that yeah. They ruined a lot at Daytona Coupe. They shared that one hundred. Twenty two daytona spiders for all years and it's still one of the most sought after valuable cars. Of course I sold it a long time ago. Well those are the stories. That'll be another show cars that matter that we wish we still had but it I think that's that's the part and parcel of the process to you. Know we're just custodians of these things and I think the real the real Enjoyment is yes Being able to kind of cycle through an evolution of cars in our stable. Unless you're one of these guys that has the resources and the and the the Kind of mental wherewithal to encompassing a garage. Full of hundreds of cars. It's it's too much of a good thing and I think being able to cherish a prize that they tone a spider a couple of other special personal examples. That's what car ownership is really all about. What was your first Special Cairo? Oh Gosh my first. Special special car was the first one that I could afford. That was quite triumph in and of itself and not a triumph literally it was actually a BMW sixteen hundred and Back like Nice start. Well no nobody knew what those things were. They were just little ten shit boxes back in the early seventies but they were quite a handful for a guy learning the whole essence of vehicle dynamics handling dynamics hammocks what does it take to actually make a car do certain things and those were manual back. Then they were all manual and You know you really had to work hard to to make that thing go fast. You know the old all saying you know you can have more fun making a slow cargo fast than a fast cargo slow and it certainly holds true with something like that little forbidding or BMW. Would you want that Car Oregon today you know. I actually tried to find bill. I'm sorry I sold a damn thing but you know when you're a college student and you're kind of starving. You have to do it. You have to do. Actually I had different priorities forties. I sold it to buy a stereo. I remember that guy that came to buy it. I was trying to sell it for twelve hundred dollars. Exactly what I paid about. Maybe a year before so this guy comes to my mother's house where I'm staying over the summer and he was kind of a shifty looking character. I'm not sure where he was if I had again. I'd say someplace like Transylvania and after talking a little bit of negotiation he says I'll give you six hundred dollars and my monkey a said. Oh boy I love monkeys and stuff. But I'm in college. Listen I got a roommate and I rather have the twelve hundred bucks. I figure it was like an organ grinder monkey or something like that but Needless to say we did a cash transaction the BMW MWR away. I've been looking for ever since and is the monkeys fill around so feeding you. I'm not you q m three sixty three. If anybody ever sees. He's a black California played out there with those numbers. I saw for I, I like I learned a lot I, but I I really, I recommend because I feel like it won't last in theaters quite as long. It's really, really, really good, and it's a very, very understated. But so it's like kinda worth being in the theater with it like shirt, and it's just wonderful, three dental strangers. Yeah. I mean, that's another one where it's like it's holy shit. Like, honestly, I don't think that's a very good movie, but someone asked me like, should I be like, yeah, you know, wanted on movie to watch. Yeah. You know, it is genuinely nuts. Eight also like isn't resolved, which is not the fault. Shirt makers remove point where it's like, oh, there's all this information we're going to get at some point in years. Yeah, that's true. He doesn't surprise right? So everyone even Mavis extend the invite to let me get five. Closest friends, very Frank Griffin, you know, like let me bring them in the floating brain guy. Bigfoot guy. He can't even sit on the boat. You monsters found out about the crews because there was targeted advertising. The good. Smart because they're watching this show smart, and you see an ad for monster right for are you a monster, come on this cruise, but like, okay, then with the fuck, where's their brand loyalty? They don't like the hotel. They all decide is this and they're also they're leaving vacation to go on a different vacation, packed your bags from our home to go stay at a hotel, and we're going to repack ever done this who has ever left one vacation to go another vacation spontaneous. It's craze Murray, the mummy retort. The answer is Murray, the mummy, right? Sure. No, it makes no, no fucking sense. Date on the George Carlin a place for my stuff. Sure. It's also it's a weird thread in this movie. Like at the end of the first woman, they go into the town to try to get Johnny, right? Like Johnny's gonna fly, and he realizes that he's crush Mavis by sending her level way because Johnny denies. He says that he could never be with a monster, right, right. So he goes and chases after John, they have to go out into the real world go into town. They realized there's a monster fest, right? And these people now love monster. They're not scared of them anymore. They're excited. They're huge fans. Frank gives a big speech about how they need their help and they'll help Dracula get to the plane turns to a back gives this thing. Right, right. The second one just takes place in a world where now it's like monsters and humans. A really cool. There's this thing where like month the walls Paulin down, right? There's see humans of heart from Johnny's parents come in and then the fifteen minutes. Tell. Section where Johnny's parents bring over other mixed couple. And the joke is right. Right, you know, and like. What was I gonna say? You know, the premise of hotel Transylvania still some hotel monsters, right? It's not like it's not over monsters anymore, and it's not like they don't just all hang out with their monster friends. They mentioned they've expanded and are trying to attract more human. Yes, because that's what Johnny is sent his job working. Please. If you twenty it's just like this fucking Elenio, dislike, barely working hard, and everything's just leave millennials alone. Ben hotel Transylvania three right. The most important part of the movie, what is it? Bobby vomits increase already. The most important part of the movie is gremlin airlines. In the home. It was so happy about it hundred. The best thing about it is there's no intro, it's just like we get it. You know what I mean? It's. Airplane was terrible in gremlins, and all they do is want to destroy magazine thing. It's like we're going in funny like the common collective pop culture knowledge base, and we're just riff. It's really funny because here's how introduced an establishment shot of a plane. It's called regular airlines, and it looked, it's just in the and then We we. left right and reminisce lines and it's like a fucking like zeppelin that's falling apart or whatever. I, it's like the flight of the Phoenix, right? And there are a bunch of gremlins. They look like the gremlins from gremlin sharing up the plane flying..

"So three is where the hotel part of it starts to get real swings me in between. We have to talk about it. You've been waiting hotel Transylvania the series. Oh, yes. On Disney St., maybe? Yeah. So last year is doing press and we were flying around a lot and I was running stuff to watch on on airplanes. I tried watching some of it. It is not my Cup of tea. I think it's totally fine. If I was ten, I probably would be all over it. And on this franchise, it's it's like monster high. I don't know if money with monster. Hi, I'm aware of which was like a big doll brand that was like, oh, there monster girls. They go to high school together. It's very much in line with that. It's like hotel Transylvania the teen years. Oh, k. none of the adults are really Mavis Centric Mavis Centric and Dracula's like on business right sister comes and takes. Over who's like a schoolmarm is a scary kind of lions Libya. Yeah, she's like MRs. Mcgahn Aqel kind of this awful. I'm not a, here's chicken. Yeah, I guess. Well, Well. gee. Right? So it's like blob as daughter and Hank Stein who's Hanks Frank son, and there's a mummy boy and we got, we got to talk about this. We're moving off a hosted this show, whatever, who don't. That's my answer that. Now we haven't talked about blobby. K he's above right? Like from the blob, right. Cracked a, what does he do? He's got is walls around. There's a joke in to where he kinda like where they're on the big chase and he like flies out the cliff. And he's like, kid be okay. It's blah blah, which is like weirdly funny. Again, there are a lot of things. Prey. This kind of cute. Bobby is like background in the first one. Clearly he liked to animating him or say whatever it was. So they write them into to a bunch where he invites himself into the sort of boys outing with the drag pack, and they put him in the little sidecar and he's just constantly getting hit and smacked and getting convinced the leaves and branches. He's in his Terminator robot. Who can you know disassemble into particular matter and reassemble shit or the third movie wanna lead with, we'll talk. Yeah. Yeah, it's not hotel anymore cruise ship. He vomits. I just want to lead with this. Well, I he's swaying back and forth. Different cover, turns yellow, and then purple think, yes, I believe so. And then he vomits and creates new life AB beloved. He creates a baby through vomiting. Yeah, that's all. Yeah. And then later about the. Cool. Okay, great. Also kind of like symbolism for. Bane. We're not on the four hymns at anymore on. On. Later also take some blob out of his tummy. Makes a pair of sunglasses sunglasses for the little baby, Bobby, correct. But then also later he makes a puppy out of his blocks. He does has sometimes create other life with new eyeballs. That came from seamer, Viva eyeballs suggest sentence, right? If it has eyeballs to tone thing. Other times it's just an animate objects, but there's a sequence where it's like he's like invulnerable. We're like. What's van Helsing the. The the love interest. Housing is trying to kill Dracula one of our finest actors, there's this long sequence where she keeps missing Dracula n- hitting Bob and he just bounces back, right? You were losing your mind little lobby, bobby's bobby's, crazy. Just like the rules of Bobby are only like, you know, ten, sir strangers. It all goes on crazy. He's a little weird. Yeah, maybe. So what you think about like what? What's up of blobby also, again, again, honestly, house he paying rent. Yes. And here's another thing Smadi at a blob shit. That's pretty impressive. Actually. All right. All right. All right. Here's the premise of hotel Transylvania three, which as we should make clear was written by tops. Yes. And Michael mccullers, who is a guy who I think they brought on the power. Tarkovsky got a co writing credit, really. This is kind of his movie. Yes, Sandler bay. They did and Sony, no longer has relationship with the other for networks anyway. So what is Sony fucking care to appease him? Pay you to show up and do your thing. He doesn't, and you know what? Sandler's fine in the movie. He definitely is more toned down. There's less of his silliness. He's still good..

"I recommend him. The third one is a bit of the so doesn't really like I one solid second one's pretty good, west ball, rest ball director. Number four is another one where you're like Jesus. They really, it's the Ben both times these movies where you're like, oh yeah, people like when they went to the head one, four one for this, he saw the trailer like, wow, he looks terrible this. Well, this doesn't star anyone. Famous like stars. A bunch of people who are kind of famous great, but the guy looks terrible. No. Okay. So this movie hit opened last week, limited in big format, and now it's expanding wide. It's a kind of a disaster movie. I Everest from the director of one Reykjavik officer comic assaulter. I miss read, I saw the raw. Oh, the next one is the one where he looks terrible. Yeah, not that I've seen. I, I, it's okay. He can't on on a read it recently. Not. Let's do a mini series of people were like, what's the deal with that guy? Because he sort of felt like he was groomed to be a big budget studio journeyman and then he sort of capped out. Some are small Walberg likes him. He's done a couple of Walberg offered. I think fast and furious seven and turn it down like he was on those stylish and now with did adrift. That's right. Which was okay? Yeah, you know he does these. Okay, movies. He did two guns where you know when you get up to two guns more like two stars fucking Denzel Washington's in that movie, I note the first that movie rule. Really? Yeah. It's really funny and they're really good together and then it has nothing Plotti. Well, that happened to the law. Denzel movie just has way too much fucking plot anyway, and then number five. Yeah, this is it's yes. The premise here is what if this famous actor looked terrible. So bad. It's kind of it's kind of this famous actors last film role that got him any praise. Now he's one of the most universally despise people in Hollywood. Wow. So he got me to. Yeah, I mean, kind of, yeah, kind not not not not quite, I guess. But you know, he had a, yes. He had a case in the public eye that you know of, you know, abusive babe, recent feature and Rolling Stone to, oh. Okay. So it's Dempster. It's the depth Stor. Yeah, a guy we're never gonna talk about on this podcast. Thankfully, it's not like we're thinking about about a fucking director who's worked with eight billion times. It's not like we're going to. Dodge through that minefield for months on end. A guy who's very depressing to think about infuriating to talk about. Desert's the last time that, oh, this is such a bad performance. Oh boy. This you think this is a bad performance and people were like, he might get the think he's gonna get the Oscar this time, black mass, like mass. I'm make cake recipe. The whole trail is going to be about fucking cake of bread. I can't remember what the recipe is guy. Give me this. Give me this fucking recipe. Mov the fuck. Where does this rank as worst likely. Yeah, hundred. I watched it on a plane. It's sucks. Mass is one of the worst films. I will say behind it. It's a piece of shit. You know, cinematic, Wikipedia entry. It's just a series of thing, and then all it's really going for is kinda like freakish like skeletal job. They did to get up and you know, then you Google eighty Bolger you'd look that. It's the same look like a scorpion sustained thing like FOX catcher, where you look at the real guy and you're like, he didn't look like fat for onto. And it was clear that these actors were just like, I want to transform into a monster. What is what is the recipe for care? Remember? It's it's the stake. It's what's his name. David harbour may right. And he's like. Recipe, right? He's. You gave it up that easy way you fucking rat and it's like silence. Like. Give a dog like a dog make America. Great again. Okay. I'm out. He chokes four women in that movie to gross movie and it's just not good. I mean, it's Scott Cooper anyway. Maybe he'll want to be on the podcasts. Yeah, he's a big listener. Okay. All right. So that's hotel Transylvania tune-in. And then and then. And then a blah, blah, blah..

We'll talk about talking about a real soon on this here for that movie show many. Is that the only one? Is there any other Myers movies for it's complicated? Well, like three times complicated process. It was very complicated. I addition for three different casting directors because they kept on firing casting directors because they weren't finding people the new cast darker, be like just thought you were an obvious choice for this, sorta the last person. I'm not sure why we'll talk about it on that. I like them a lot. I like it. Okay. But it does start, you know, has stupid noodle brain men who I can hate so much. I hate those parts of it. That movie has to work a hall too many of it. It does, yes. All right. So number three? Yeah, it's a sequel in what becomes a trilogy Casper's two. It is in my opinion, the best of the three allow in this film, you may not have seen this film. Yeah, he's never even heard of it. Three of them, three of them, which is kind of crazy. The first one did really well. This one did. Okay. The third one came and went. No question of a fourth. It's done. It's done. Isn't star-driven? No, no, not brand name driven. It's a, it's a, it's an established property. Is it a horror thing? No, no, a teen thing. It's a teen thing. It's a team thing there. Three of them that came in went that makes me think I probably saw it. Maybe. I don't know. I don't know. It's good one. I like this one. This one's like a decent movie, not like not a book books. It is a book series. It's kind of reminded me of like the sort of middle resident, evil movies, which are also really good. So always amaze runner. The scorch trials, welcome to the scorch. And what movie of David heirs have we. She wants to discuss bright writer and brightest, right? Brighter number four. These are some movies who. Number four is, is the rare. This movie stars, a really famous director, and it's the rare movie. He's with the curve trouble with the curve, Clint Eastwood baseball pitching scout moving. Yes, he's blind, his blinds going blind. It doesn't want to know. So he has his daughter go with him and she's learning how to scout Amy Adams, John good. This is a film that came out in theaters, and I think it was his main first ADD directed it, but I've heard that you over. Interesting. Okay. It's still with the current. I believe it's the last movie he acted, but now he's about. Mule make America great. Again. Doing a ninety year old drug meal movie that he's directing and starring in that gives me mixed feelings. Kokin my buns kinda like kind of like that. Actually, Donald Trump. I don't know if he likes Trump view, isn't he kind of Trump's kind of a bad guy put? Maybe we need a bad guy. Is a film that was like one of those sat on the shelf for a long time, and then it's star got super famous, so it kinda got dumped, oh, fuck it has a dupe. It name. I know it's the, it's the Jennifer, Lawrence horror movie. It's called the house at the end of the streets. Okay. Which made thirty one million dollars which is, and that was literally just off. They were like, Jennifer, Lawrence is famous. Now we got this movie house at the end of some street or something. Sure. September release it. Okay. So often when we play this, I'm like, who are these people that go to see these move? Yeah, it's true that people were just like, well, gotta see something might as well see what the house the end of the street. Here's at the end of the stress would it's like not good. I think it's bad house. It's a dead end. Don't go three million people on. Here's the repeater. Here's the craziest thing about this number six, opening this weekend pitch. Perfect cravings to five million dollars. Now it's like semi limited release. Hundred, not even three hundred and thirty features like weird, but like what's that about? They were like, yeah, let's platform this like it's nineteen eighty-two whatever it worst eventually anyway. So that's hotel. Transylvania one. You're in this movie, love it. Big fan. I watch it a lot. I do watch it first one. The first one a lot. I hadn't seen, blah, Blah, blah. blah, blah. I have much to against since it came out, which I enjoyed. But I think is a total gentlemen, six. I mean, I think I'm basically kind of a gentleman six and all them, but like that's to me, that's a positive one. I just think the actual, the actual, I think it's got a sweeter script. I think it's got tighter story, and I think the craft is at its highest in the first one. Okay. All right. Now, listen. And then the the record was beaten by hotel Transylvania two and it was an advance Sandler. Second best ever behind what longest yard, longest yard, which like bet shouldn't like made no sense. Everyone thought this was just like, I don't fuck in now, you know. So number two at the box office, this weekend is directed by director who we have discussed. One of his movies on this podcast. Not in this episode, but we've covered this. We have done one episode on one of his movies. Movies about time. True. Movies about time. Yeah, we've covered one of his not a mini series. We come from. He wrote a pup movie, and this is one of the big things that came out in the Sony leak is all these emails from APEC scalping like I don't fucking get it like he does. She doesn't get the script that he wrote any of it. She's like, we, why do we like Popeye in the first place character cool kids like him and she's like, emailing, Lord, and Miller being like, can watch this thing and tell me if there's something I'm not getting and they're like, he's a really fucking good animator what he's doing. Here's really interesting, and she was, I don't know of kids wanna see this. I'm watching it. It's crazy. It's insane. Right? I can see why Sony was freaked out by this. Yeah. 'cause yeah, this was full. Siegi tasks hit a full script and they did a story real screening with the story storyboards and temp voices. See the whole movie preemptive. Right? And they were just like, I don't fucking get this. Yeah, it's, it's, it's, it's crazy. Everyone should look it up. It looks insane. But, but all this shit gets shit cans after two. When he says, I'm one hundred percent knock comeback. For three. I've done my two movies. I had a bad experience doing hotel. Transylvania actively says, Sandler took that movie over and I just kinda wasn't into it. Like he says this in an interview and in the emails where they're talking about canceling Popeye ain't PASCAL is like on one hand, I don't get this fucking thing. On the other hand, like Gandhi's a trooper. He really handled that hotel Transylvania two situation really well. Sandler was a nightmare on that scale and emails going like Sandler would come into the room and give him animation notes. Sandler shouldn't be noted him on animated. It's one thing that he no longer had control over the script. It was like, Sandler tried to get his hands on everything onto, and he was like, maybe we should do them the solid. I don't fucking get this Popeye thing and they announce hotel Transylvania three. They were gonna get a new director. He goes on vacation with his family on a cruise ship, and he's like, fuck, you know what? I, I could do it on a crucial. Cruise ship, but wonder now will they let him make something totally of his own because he got this sort of like, just wondering if this is doing really great. Do you wanna do hotel transplant or guarantee you? They're going to back the truck up into his back. Summer vacation to, but this feels like going another Kerr's like this franchise was like sloppy, sixth, it was like a cart before the horse. What if we make six of these? And no one could figure out how make one he took over and said, what if we take all the pretenses of this being like a serious thing and make it like mad magazine, like you just make it like so dense with gags and visual humor and Connecticut design and all of that. But one does have like a pretty good, emotional spine. A very simple, straightforward, family movie kind of way. I think the Mavis plotline works relief. This fucking rules really just be up front about it. Maybe it's his cool. She's awesome. She's a nice person, right? So. Doing well, and she's a nice family. We'll Transylvania one. No, we just chat all over Sony poured target house giving to do this ship and it's like spoiler alert the movies are pretty good. Yeah. And spoiler alert. Looking to transfer files. Wait a second. Are you talking about making the creative process easier for everyone? Yeah. Oh, that's what we transfer does. My friend like you don't wanna get hacked like Sony, you want those emails getting transferred cleanly. "Yeah. But why do you feel like other franchises or other movies? Don't? I think a, that's a Pixar thing in terms of them setting the standard because Toy Story at the time was trying to be sold as look. It looks real like there's a reason why Toy Story was about toys because they knew at that time, the best thing the CGI could replicate was plastic. The humans into a story, as we've mentioned, look, terrible look like demons, right? Like they're so scary. They look a little better with every move. They also get more stylized with every movie they stopped, pretending that they're gonna make them look even Asia. But there was always Toy Story to the the way night character. They're like look like his hair and is like we're making total getting more and more detailed and all that. Yeah, they give up on all of that. Yeah. But you do watch the first Toy Story and even just in terms of like the quote, unquote lighting in the movie, right? They really try to make it look like it's a live action movie. Yeah, they're trying to replicate that style, which then other Pixar movies get more sort of expressionist in their cinematic language, but the model stay pretty rigid. And like Pete doctor talks about like when he was making inside out, he was like, I wanna go back to old school cartooning. I mean, inside is a far better movie than hotel Transylvania it is, but in terms of animation, if he's trying to do the same thing, it fails wildly. Yeah, that's not a movie that does that. No, no. And this is like trying to think of any Pixar movie that does a, I think Ben, the reason why I think CoCo came the closest with the way the skeletons move. Sure. That gets a little cartooning pretty cool. I think, viewed as being out of fashion. Oh, that's sort of kids stuff that's not cool in the sort of post Shrek..

"So I was like, fuck, what am I gonna do for twelve hours? I found a local movie theater movie, right? Get in and out seeing movies. So I said, oh, there's this animated monster film that just came out from director. I really like I should go see that. And I went and saw Franken weenie. All right, Tim Burton, okay. Was deeply sort of on on, frankly, movie animated movies are pretty bad has fuck Franken when he got these good reviews, that's such a bummer gets an Oscar nominated more time to kill. I don't know. I guess I'll sneak in a hotel Transylvania, but after Franken, William expectations are basement low, right? I sit there watching this and I go here. Griffey Nunes in downtown LA. I'm watching an American masterpiece boy. Has everyone sleeping on this fucking thing. This movie's breaking ground for character innovation and CGI. Yeah. Because he's bringing back. The principal's classic cartooning said this on on this very podcasts to medium that has been pretty rigid so far. And I love me. My Pixar. How many for Golden Globe and was snubbed by the Oscars was I don't think it was gonna ever get enough. No, but see what else got nominated that year. Okay. I'll find I'll try. I'll try and find out it is that kind of crappy year. It was a bad year because it's the year that ours too. Well, car car soon nominated. No, it wasn't, but it was that the year of cars to where Pixar was or rave won that year here you're nominating paranormal should've won. They're actually pretty good. Yeah, Braves, probably the worst. Yeah, brave, Franken weenie which is also great. No paranormal, which is great mass pirates, which is a lot of five really like and Reckitt Ralph. Oh, wow, which is a great time. And I think everyone thought Ralph was gonna win. No, he was gonna wreck. It. I think people honestly didn't know what was going to win. And I think a lot of odors like Braves, the Pixar one. Sure. Like check whatever I genuinely believe most didn't see it. Yeah, for sure. It's the pig. She's like a girl apprentice with an arrow. Great, big red hair shirk wins. And then you had a really awkward speech where like the first director who was fired is like shoved off stage by the second. Eric, real weird. Yeah. Who's like I made this movie inspired by her daughter. So. The point is I'm not gonna nerd about the too much. Ben is already putting his head in his hands. The big thing is that CGI innovation as opposed to hinder enemy Shen is more art of manipulation. Okay, right. Because when you're drawing, you can draw anything you want for any frame and that encourages a real sort of boundary stretching of how these characters can. Sure. Certainly, when you get to the most expressive animation, you get to sort of like Bob clampett and tech savory and church savory, and these guys who really Avery, he's laughing and movement and pose. Yeah, these things, right, right. But this notion of creating tension through physicality, only whether it's comedic tension or dramatic tension, you know, that's a cop skis whole thing, Cassandra, Jack clone wars. That's all about tension through pose. It's just inservice of action and dramatic storytelling, but it's also very minimalistic animation. Those characters don't move a lot until they suddenly do, but they're those long stretches where it's like just posing totally still right before she goes crazy. Right, right, right. And this is the other side of. Him, which is using the same sort of principles for purely comedic thing, which is throwing his much dissident movement as possible. And that thing that I love I talked about with the funniest moment history cinema when violet squirts the water out of your funny, this notion of based on your mood, your entire physiology can change the shape of your skull. Your body can totally distort this sort of very expressionist ick physicality, right? Because see, John emission is about manipulation. It's they build a physical model, and then they just move that model. It's like it's. Right? It's like you're moving thing. Most people don't push animation in that kind of way in the world is CGI of like, okay, if track is angry, he's going to get two feet taller, right? Yes, you're right. See, see, I'm glad he talks about the Chicago and think about it, but it's funny. It's funny when drek suddenly is like all skinny for one moment. He's like, you know, I don't know feeling like ashamed or right?.

"Is this based off some fucking book or something? And it's quite the opposite. Okay. This is one of those things that we often mock as just like this fucking industry, right? Right. Where some guy went in with like a twenty minute presentation on a franchise. Okay. Oh, wow. Wow. Is I'm going to get the guy's name for you. He wrote and directed like two movies in the eighties and other than that, like this is now his breadwinners at Todd Durham, yes. Okay. I'm yes, I'm reading about this guy, studied comedy writing right tales dimension and hyperspace nineteen Eighty-four. He comes in with the pitch, doesn't right the movie. He gets a story credit, their movies written by Roberts, Michael, who's like a Sandler, mainstay. NPR Banham who's a British comedy, mania. Jay. Guy. He he, I think he worked on borat and he also worked on like all the great Chris Mars like, you know, brass, I'd day-to-day and all that stuff. So yeah, but this guy just comes in and goes, here's the pitch for a franchise here. Six movies, here's four TV shows. Here's action figures. Video games, here's apps. It's one of those things you hear where it's just like he sold them just an empty box and it was like it's a hotel full monster shoes, all the different things you could make out of it. It even really pitched storylines. Yeah, you know it was just like you could put these characters in anything and you could open a hotel and you could open hotel, hey humans, it does feel like it's a big miss that Sony doesn't have like a theme park sort of connection and can't have like a hotel Transylvania at theme park, like a hotel. Right. Tell Transylvania ghouls zombies walking around was my first question. Yes, it's not really a hotel. They all seem to sort of live there. Correct? It's a residential hotel, I guess. Yeah. It's kind of like just a housing community, sort of like the Florida project. Like, you know, like are they always on vacation? Like does the where we'll have a job that he's busy like, you know, that's what's odd. It's also that in three, they go on vacation and the higher hotel as Dracula points out. They live in a hotel employees and customers alike. David, you want them to do their taxes. Go over their income in the movie. Come on, genuinely interested. Go, let us going just going out like how were they? How is the mummy pay his rent? Yeah, it's he's a mummy. It's still translate. Where has like five thousand children like house, he supporting all them and these paying like three hundred and night for dead room. But this was what's going on. The crux of the pitch was the idea of where to monsters go and they need to make sure that was his pitch, right? Here's all the actually stood up monsters. Go in the needed break, and everyone was like slide clicker and his hand is wearing the turtle neck with a little glasses. Because to me one more thing. It's a weird pitch because it's like I feel like the pitch is should more just be like, we all know Adam Sandler. Click, you know, just the Dracula voice. Click he does Dracula okay. They live in a hotel or something, right? Where's my hundred million dollars? But this is the thing it takes six years for Adam. Sandler Campari this thing. Okay, that's weird. That should have been key pitches it and they're just so desperate for shit Sony's. Like, how do we do that? Pixar thing. This guy comes in and he goes, you'll make sequels and they go sequels. We want those shirk good like that was the pitch was these movies will be successful and they were like great by the pitcher him and they go, wait, we need a script. Okay. So okay, coffee is the fifth director announced for this movie. It becomes this joke within like six, six, six. It becomes this joke within the dumb animation, blogs that I read for losers, that it's like this fucking Sony movie that they bought in two thousand three. They're never gonna make it every two years. They announced someone new as the director of hotel show. Here's here's the had to sail their names. But I, they had like the one of the guys who worked on open season..

"Right. There's a similar thing with like a nightmare for Christmas being the first major stop motion film most movies are still about monsters. Right? Right, right. Yeah, because it's like herky-jerky and creepy. Right, right. And I think the same thing happened with Toy Story where it's like, this is what the comedic sensibility of CGI movies, which is what like other characters are a little more adult. They're a little more knowing it's placing sort of like comedic personalities into a weird feeling. Another thing though is even more important is that their star driven? That's right, said Kameda personnel breaking the people's voices in just literally making shark tale like the little fish should look like, we'll Smith and the big shark should look like deniro. Yes. And all that says he's like a clown, Fisher. That's like the dream work, apex, where they break it down into some sort of like really crass mathematical formula for what people want out of these movies. Oh, it feels like one of those things and other students are trying to do that as well. Get to your point. That's enough. So Sony is throwing like a lot of darts at the word. Apparently one of the things that came out in like the Sony hack. So there's a lot of really interesting shit Ryota Transylvania that came on the Sony heck's. Interesting. If you knew where to look, which I did where no one was looking, is that where you were looking? So do you know, can you tell me Sony's first animated film open season? How do you know that? I know this shit. The only value I have in the world. Values pets. That's putting it strong. It's the only it's all a God. Can you name the stars of open seas? Guess I can't Martin Lawrence and Ashton Kutcher Debra messing the female, correct. And the the villain. I don't know who the Gary Sinise zone. And he played Stephan the wolf, correct? Yes. Now he plays like hunters something isn't it about like huntings who knows is open season and that was one that was just sort of like marginal didn't do very well. Then they had surf's up, right? You know, Oscar-nominated got penguins kinda cute right things I like haven't seen and that sort of we're like box office like doubles or triples at best. And then they had cloudy with a chance of meatballs which is kind of a breakthrough. That's a good movie does well critically guess, well, received launches Lord Miller into their feature film career, then it's a little patch here. Can you tell me the next one. In between. You're missing a monster house. Oh, that's not on this because I guess it was produced by this. Image works rather than by Sony Pictures was released by Sony released by Columbia. Next thing after it's two years later, not smarts. It's the Smurfs, right? They count those. Yeah. And then those two hybrid obviously is also. Goosebumps. They file as Sony enemy do. Yeah, there's Arthur Christmas, which is fine. Is that CG or is that clad is CG little argument? Yeah, in the pirates which is that's really good, that's that's cute. Yeah. "I haven't yet. We were talking about seeing it. I think hurry up. I don't think it's going to linger. I, I just I just finished production on on the ticket. Now am eagerly catching up with the twenty-seven movies. I need to. That's what you've been doing. Yeah, that's why haven't been here. That's why we've just been recording the ads alone of, okay. It was kinda wonder what happened to. Stephen. Late. Yeah, every time for six months. Wasn't six. It was like four. I was for it was it was a gentleman, and that's your rating. By the way, I'm suffering from severe back pain. The full body cast. I saw the movie Griffin yesterday and then after movie was done, I was like, like just sort of thinking to myself, I'm able like go get some pizza or something Griffin's like I have to go. And I was like, oh, you know, I've got to go home. I did so. Great. Great. I've been laid up most of the time I injured myself doing dialogue scene. Congrats. So I'm doing great. I mean, I've injured myself like sitting in a chair was like, but the problem is that I also do physically demanding stuff on there. Lame for me to like to be fair straw that broke the camel's back or whatever it was Griffin's back. And yeah, so I saw this movie with you yesterday, how men's physical pain the entire time went to AMC recliners and I know still hurt, and I picked a bunch afterwards and we talk some shit about, you know, axel and wonder park or whatever these things we go, see this movie together. Right? We're seeing a fucking weekday. Matinee hotel Transylvania three. So a lot of the blankets on radical, oh God, how am I going to go see this way about myself story. He was telling me going on. He added show last night which like it's crazy that they show this movie and eleven. It was weird and I was like, what? Feeder theater AMC seven. Third. Yeah. Did it smell like us. We took the handicaps teams theater. But I was intrigued to see who is going to be. There's mostly couples we you like a red carpet, who's gonna show up? Yeah, I was intrigued to see who is going to. It was mostly young couples like early twenties. There's a couple of nearly that was kinda like making out their handed heavy petty. That was like, It was like I was I like, was like this. this a family, but I could see say you're twenty one. The first one came out. You were like fourteen, yeah, this point. It's kind of like you might. You might. Time during a hotel Transylvania now that's like a sexual fetish. That was like an activation. They're gods. No, the first time you kiss somebody, it's in the theater HD one, and now you're only get it up for dragging the boys get it. That's why go to all the Terminator movies. Wonder why you wouldn't stop talking. You're experiencing salvation. I loved it, but then there was a bunch of guys. By themselves and I saw the ultimate creep. He had his shirt. We just do this. Sometimes we do this nothing to do with anything. Sometimes. I throw a tan tee a little tan. I throw a little tiny tent and I say, I want to talk about the hotel train school. Which you've consistently talked about. Right from the start very early on in the Star Wars days. I was like, do you know this movie is fucking good? Yeah, because it was a big stump speech of mine because at the time everyone's like that movie looks dumb. I think it was that the second one was coming out like around when we were doing the Star Wars stuff. I think it was even before that. I think it was literally just off of, no, the second one came out September twenty fifteen. So you know here we were doing Star Wars and the first ones twenty twelve. Yeah, that's right. They make them every three years. Yeah. I one premiered at the Toronto film festival. Do you know that I'll well. I think this one for can write yet did won the door. But this is, I mean, we you and I were talking after we saw three together we saw. So we'll be talking about this is right? Yeah, we saw some together and we're talking about how this trilogy is a weird arm wrestling match for tour ship. That's true. So I guess that's the through line for our show to creative powers. Yes, quite both alike in dignity. In fair Hollywood, where we set are seeing. You've got Adam Sandler. Did you know that this is the first theatrically released film, and I'm Sandler has done since hotel Transylvania two apart from like Meyrowitz which you kind of count is, but like it's basically Netflix movie. Do just goes Netflix, like, I don't think he's I can double check this. I don't think he's done like movie. No, because pixels was pre that was his last fifteen as well. Right. And then you have hotel Transylvania two and then yeah, apart from Meyer wits which got us sort of limited release, he's only ethics movie. Yeah, that's crazy and marijuana's enough experience. And I think he's got another method, Dan flicks coming out next year. This franchise remains pretty much the last vestige of Adam Sandler's theatrical career. Right? And yet you know, what does business make money? Awful box. Exactly. It's not like it's not making tons of mile. Second one outgrowths the first. This one is out grossing. Yup. Yup. Yup. Which is because I feel like this has gone from being my weird little darkhorse franchise that no one even considered. I'm most people try sell them out like what is this? When did this come out? Who cares? Right. And now people are like, oh, those fucking movie. Right now, it's just annoying. Now you see the trailer for it and you're like, keep making this. I have to know it exists. Having seen them just like what is a some fucking bullshit has to be bad. It just sounds bad. And then the trailer is just like, I don't know, like a bunch of hijinks and Adam sandlers that vampire. These movies do not work well in trailers. No. No. Because when you see the gags that are so much about it looks like family guy shit looks like except like not even, you know, transgressive like any Tarkovsky is all about timing. And so like when the gags are fast paced or when they're slow, it's all about like the rhythm around that gag and they're just cutting back together. It's just like this looks like just a calamity. Do you know what else is true about hotel? Transylvania three. What's the first time. They've released in the summer, it's upgraded to summer. Blockbuster, the other ones came out and say Hamburg, which is like real deal that they were like such big September releases because everyone thought that was kind of like a punt. Yeah, right. And then it's like they do well, there they take to summer harder, you know, coming up against your Marvel's, your aunt men, your who else we got your your ears. Yeah, your mama's. By the way, happy equalizer weekend. Everybody. Your fallen kingdoms. Yeah, you're purges and holding its own doing great dragging the boys, the drag pack. Your goal drew drew Drew's..
