"Flight safety meltdown. Another batch of classified documents found in President Biden's possession and speaker Kevin McCarthy, speaking out for the first time about embattled freshman congressman George Santos. Also making news, a story from Bloomberg government congressional reporter Jack Fitzpatrick on plum committee assignments going to some of speaker McCarthy's GOP holdouts. And Jack is here with us now. I want to get to that story shortly, Jack first, we got to talk about the situation with the FAA. What is the reaction in Washington to yesterday's system outage? In short, the reaction is concerned. This is a significant enough issue so that you could get a lot of congressional feedback over time on this, partly because they are going to have to work on an FAA authorization bill. Coming up that would have an effect over the next few years. Maria Cantwell, the senator from Washington, a Democrat who previously cheered the commerce science and transportation committee, said the committee is going to be looking into that. It's also something that has gotten a little bit more of a political bit of pushback you've heard from Republicans like Ted Cruz, calling this unacceptable. They're part of that may be that there is a particularly high profile, unusually high profile transportation secretary and Pete Buttigieg. So there's some policy and political responses and it's definitely something that got lawmakers attention on Capitol Hill. And also, of course, getting lawmakers attention as well is this reported discovery of a second batch of classified documents in another of President Biden's former offices. What's the latest there? Yeah, so they discovered a second batch. This is at what they found was at the University of Pennsylvania's Biden center office. This has drawn some comparisons or some back and forth with the documents at Mar-a-Lago that former president Donald Trump had some key differences, of course, that this was something that lawyers found and then quickly contacted the national archives about, but this is now the second instance in which that has happened. It is getting some response on Capitol Hill, James comer, the incoming oversight committee chairman said that the committee's investigating this clearly, especially given the high profile FBI search for documents that the former president had that Trump had, there's really a bit of a politicized response and a back and forth that does not seem to be going away in the near future. Is the pressure going away for New York Republican George Santos after all the fabrications? I would not say the pressure is going away. He apparently is going to keep his seat, at least according to speaker Kevin McCarthy, who said that that is up to the voters, the voters can make a different choice in two years if they want. But there is a lot of pressure still on him, you know, there are a couple there are Republicans from Long Island calling for him to step down, including a couple fellow Republican lawmakers, Nick loloda, another New York Republican, said that what he's done is despicable. So there's quite a bit of pressure and a lot of questions about, does this affect his committee assignments? How does this affect his ability to do his job? Still quite a bit of pushback and criticism of Santos for lying about his background, but according to McCarthy, there's not a move to remove him from the house at this point. Speaking of committee assignments, I know you've been following those very closely, including some plum gigs going to some of the Republicans who withheld their vote for speaker McCarthy during that dragged out process last week. We got about a minute left here. Yes, at least people who initially withheld their vote. That was a part of the negotiations was some of the conservatives wanted some good spots. Michael cloud from Texas and Andrew Clyde from Georgia are going to get to be on the appropriations committee, which essentially funds all the agencies of the government and Byron donalds and Andy ogles are getting spots on the financial services committee. So a few good assignments on powerful committees for some of the conservatives who a number of times voted against McCarthy before ultimately supporting him. Interesting. Thanks for keeping us up to speed as always. "My progress on Capitol Hill, preventing a big U.S. rail strike for more on this let's get to the Bloomberg newsroom and Denise Pellegrini. Denise. Thank you, Paul and Senate Republicans have failed in a bid to get a unanimous vote to force labor unions and railroads to resolve their dispute independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the lone objector. Sanders says the workers need better sick leave. And senator dick Durbin of Illinois telling reporters today lawmakers don't have a magic wand here. I think it's naive to believe that we can just quickly come up with an agreement on settling their strike and enacted in the Senate, which requires 60 votes. It takes a lot more work than that. But I think the message, the railroads as well as the union is get the job done. And we may see them get the job done somehow because the chairman of the House transportation committee is now saying a labor deal tomorrow is entirely possible. Meantime, website outages on Amtrak site as passengers try to figure out what's going on with trip cancellations, Amtrak stepping up those cancellations tomorrow ahead of the Friday morning strike deadline. Set in foreign relations committee has approved a bill that would give Taipei four and a half $1 billion for defense and Bloomberg staniel flatley says there's widespread bipartisan support for this in Congress. And flatly also says New Jersey senator Robert Menendez says we do need to be clear the U.S. is not seeking war with China. It's a big day for Chinese president Xi Jinping. Different, like in quote now, Mr President, this is something that we know is inappropriate. We know that this is something for which Mr may orcas should be held accountable. We know that this is something for which he has not been held accountable in here is what he did. He put his thumb on the scale, pressured his A. D. He pressured others for the benefit of some powerful friends. And it is all there for everyone to read in the inspector general's report, And yet he was never held accountable. And yet here we are being asked to support his nomination to the president's Cabinet that debate over the president's nominee to head up the Department of Homeland Security Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, despite some Republican opposition In six GOP senators did support the Democrats in the my organs nomination. They are capital Quest, Virginia Collins of Maine, Murkowski of Alaska, Portman of Ohio, Romney of Utah, and Sullivan of Alaska. Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania did not vote again. Final confirmation vote 56 to 43 in favor of his nomination Also in the Senate floor. The nomination people to judge by a vote of 86 to 13, the former South Bend, Indiana mayor and 2020, Democratic presidential candidate confirm As the next transportation secretary. Washington Senator Maria Cantwell, the incoming chair of the Senate Transportation Committee. With these remarks, President come before today to support the nomination of Pete Buddha Judge to be Secretary of transportation. We all know the nominee as Mayor Pete, a man who basically came onto the national stage as they Midwest mayor who had lots of enthusiasm for making investment in America's future. So today. Were considering his nomination to be secretary of transportation at a time when we need a lot of work done on transportation, and in my opinion, he's a young, energetic mayor who is going to help us usher in a new era of transportation. That means there's gonna be a lot of bipartisan dialogue about how we get there. But this job should not be underestimated in the importance that the transportation sector and the investments for the future need that. Is that our transportation Since system serves as the backbone of our economy, and when it's not doing well, the consequential impacts of that affect our economy. It affects how are businesses compete in the global economy. It affects how people get to and from work, and it affects their home life as well. So it's a big job that we have. And I know that this mayor and future secretary of Transportation understands how big this challenge is that from such Senator Maria Cantwell is lawmakers confirming people to judge Serving is the next transportation secretary, and he is making history as the first openly gay member of the presidential cabinet. Meanwhile, the Senate Agriculture Committee taking up the nomination of Tom Vilsack, he is the former Iowa governor. He also headed up the AG department during the Obama administration and his president Biden's pick to return to that Cabinet post Senator Debbie Stabbing a Michigan who now chairs the committee with this line of questioning to Tom Vilsack. I want to start first with just the farm economy. In general, we've seen such tumultuous years now for our farmers and ranchers. We've seen government payments replaced markets as the main driver of farm profitability and I share With a center. Bozeman's concerned about markets and trade and what we need to do to get stability back for our farmers and ranchers. We're going to continue to have challenges. We know because of the pandemic and it moving forward. It is good to see bright spots like corn and Serbian wheat prices recently, hitting their highest in the last six years. That's good news, but taking a step back how Can we return to a sense of normalcy and the farm economy with a focus on responsible risk management and building markets for producers, which really has been the foundation of our farm bills in recent years? Sure, that's any complicated question, and I'll do my best to try to respond in a short period of time. It indeed starts with markets. Historically, we've obviously looked at export market opportunities anywhere from 20 to 30. Out of what's produced in this country. It's exported so clearly a stable, secure trade policy that doesn't create havoc in the market. It doesn't put us at a competitive disadvantage would be helpful in terms of our ability to sell product overseas, expanding market opportunities in new market. I think Southeast Asia is an opportunity, I think, eventually over time, we're going to see potential opportunities in Africa one half of the world's increased population, it is liable to come in the next 15 years in that single continent. So we want to obviously be engaged in trade opportunities There is they've all certainly our competitors are doing that. But it's more than just export markets is growing markets here domestically by a good by investing in a robot's local and regional food system that creates market opportunities for small and its size producers so they can negotiate their own price. We began that process in the Obama administration, but I think there's much much more work to be done in that space. It's about creating new markets markets that have never been that have been developed before. Carbon sequestration and storage. I've done the right way Theocracy, unity for methane capture and reuse. You've done the right way. The development of bio based manufacturing creates.

He's a man of integrity, person of principle who possesses a truly truly remarkable work out there. What's more, you may well I'll be the most qualified nominee we've ever been asked to consider to lead the Department of Homeland Security has previously served admirably. It's this deputy secretary for nearly four years, and before that, as they had a DHS is largest agency, The U. One Thing Millennials Aren't Killing? Public Transportation
"Millennials are often blamed for killing things. You know like gulf mayonnaise vacations marriage. It's almost become a cliche. Well there is one. Many millennials and their younger counterparts in gen z save public transportation urban living concern for the environment and a lack of romanticism. About cars are some other reasons why. Npr's mvp has more. There's one word that twenty four year old michelle. Santa maria keeps using when she talks about public transit. I feel like it's so cute. it's just cute. it's so cute. i think it's cute. I mean it's clear that for her. Public transportation is about a lot more than just getting from point a to point b. santa. Maria is one of the many millennials who aren't as car crazy as their parents generation. She belongs to a facebook group called. And brace yourself. It's a mouthful. New urbanism seems for transit oriented teens. The acronym is numb tots. Which is what they call themselves. There are more than two hundred thousand members. And they share funny posts but also debate transportation policies and fantasize about a world in which nobody needs a car but the pandemic has crushed that dream across the country drop in ridership have led to budget cuts and service rollbacks which means a lot of trains and buses are coming less frequently. If at all said the honest it's infuriating in a way. William clark is also a number top. He's twenty five years old and lives in philadelphia. He worries about transit workers as well as the commuters who ride buses and subways not because they love them but because they don't have a choice because when you reduce the amount of service you have to pack more people onto your vehicles at least a higher possibility of contract code. It's actually pretty scary. He works from home now. But he's trying to support the system in other ways. He's a member of a transit. Riders union in philadelphia where he advocates for the needs of writers in the city. Who might not be able to make public meetings across the country. Twenty five year old. Alex lee is advocating for transit. In san jose california he got himself elected to the state legislature and appointed to the transportation committee. If you start putting transit then you're really hurting the people that depend on it. Most people who don't have access to cars or people who rely on these little life against soon for work and lobbies are essential workers twenty-seven-year-old tens and trump used to be one of those essential workers. He was an icu nurse until he moved to vermont in burlington mason wide. And here's the other thing. It's the middle of january. We just had a snowfall and biplane is just as clear as any road. He left in part because he feared for his life biking on the streets and the commute on the subway could take as long as three hours. So what numb tots like him. Think about the new. Us president whose nickname after all is amtrak. Joe and who's appointed a millennial people judge as transportation secretary some are hopeful but ciampo is not impressed is actually millennial. He seems ancient. Let me look at this age. I'm fairly certain that he is to get on my phone and be like. Oh dang is he we google it and it turns out buddha. Judge is thirty nine so so i guess he counters but it doesn't think like a millennial no i don't i don't think so compel thinking like a millennial means not thinking like a politician like those politicians from previous generations who promised major upgrades to public transit systems and never delivered a peasley npr

"Congestion, and it's happening behind the scenes in the Legislature's. The governor tried to figure out which highway projects can afford to be paused his Cris Element, governor, Inslee told the Department of Transportation to put the bidding process on hold for projects that did not meet his directive to focus more money. And attention to fish passage transportation projects, Then wash godhead. Roger Miller came up with a list of nine transportation projects that did not meet the current criteria. And they include the Gateway project, which we have talked about a lot. That's the finishing of 167 to pile up and 55 and 509 there through the port of Tacoma, and then the I five projects in Marysville that we've also talked about that would add a new on an off ramp. For my five there at 5 to 9. Those air two huge podge of projects that those areas have fought for years to get funded, and they were projects that were funded under the 2015 connecting Washington Transportation plan. Life fair. Kim Roscoe testified before the House Transportation Committee last week, asking lawmakers to reconsider. It is ironic, though, and incredibly counterproductive that a project so pivotal pivotal to economic recovery, so instrumental to completing a direct connection into a world class container cargo port. And one that will help bring so many thousands of new jobs into our state would have the pause button hit on it now pushing the pause. Button does not cancel the project, but it stops the bidding process from beginning So what we're looking at is because of the uncertain financial picture and the budgets that are still being hammered out in Olympia. The rationale is, let's not commit dollars right now to projects that might not be there when we finished the budgets, which will come at the end of the session, so they're trying to provide some flexibility here but to come, a City Council member, Christina Walker, is concerned that will really hurt the projects. Despite our current financial challenges, the city of coma and other local governments are making our payments as agreed upon, and we're concerned that the delay will only in Greased the construction costs. And when she talks about the city of Tacoma making payments, there are a lot of local, federal, local and federal dollars that have been put together in a lot of these projects. So, for instance, they've been raising money throughout Pierce County to make sure that they can have some local funding that goes to that Gateway project for the Gateway Project. It's about $200 million that they believe could be at risk. Well, the Washington says no, it this point. There's no risk to any of the fund federal local funding. They don't believe that's an issue. But it's something that those council members there in that affected area wanted to bring up Former state senator and current Pierce County Council member, Han Zeiger help move this Gateway project up a couple years ago. And he says this pauses really going back on what people were promised. So many people are expecting that this is gonna happen, and I think to put it on pause is just the wrong wrong choice. During this time, there was similar testimony about the pausing the Snohomish County projects, including that 5 to 9 interchange. Now Governor Inslee's two year budget contains $726 million for fish passage work That's nearly triple what was in the current budget. Now nobody disputes that keeping up with the fish passage. Work is necessary and Considering there was a federal court order that is mandating it. House Democrats have proposed putting $3.5 billion toward the effort over 16 years, so not necessarily the amount of dollars that the governor wants in there, so I asked the governor's office. You'll kind of explain what what you're doing here give give us the rationale, and you know why these were put on the PAS list, especially since they're considered so vital to economic recovery. I got this statement from Debbie Driver. She's the governor's transportation policy advisor. And she said, We've heard concerns from legislators regarding Our plan to pause advertising. A number of transportation projects were reviewed reviewing the short term pause, and we're going to be working closely what transportation leaders in the House and Senate to find an alternative approach, so it's possible that the pause button may not in, you know entirely be set down on these things, so it's kind of a moving target, but it's something that is going on in a couple of projects that I know are very vital to our region ones we've highlighted before. Happened to be on that list. So that's kind of what caught our attention. Right? What's your traffic headline Traffic headline is continuing to be the kind of the mystery slowing on South Bound. "Vaccination delivery system, you know, bolstering it. And in truth, as it turns out, building it, I mean, it was, you know, you know, Trump like to say the coverage were bare. When I got here. The coverage really were bare when when the Biden administration got there? But, yeah, I think the rest of this stuff you know the rest of things that are mentioned executive orders and don't get me wrong. There's a lot of very important stuff being done. But I feel as though those air kind of wedge issues and political hot potatoes, whereas covert relief and delivering vaccines If you can keep on message out of the White House, it seems to me to be a political winner. You're you know, you're absolutely right. Personal. If you were Biden, you wouldn't be on the phone with me right now. But the whole the whole life. I still take one call with you, but it would be would be limiting it. I certainly not weekly. No, you're right. You squeezed me in between Trudeau and Lopez over door today. What? I think that it's important that you said that's true. Uh and you know they've done a lot. But this week has been about undoing a lot as well. And that takes a moment that That's a stroke of a pen. The stuff that the president and administrations air remembered for our landmark of landmark pieces of legislation or tackling huge problems, the taking a serial war and and re establishing the country and that's what this is, in essence, so I do think that you're right that they have to stay on point with that. But they also have to pay attention to the jobs and the jobs that need to come back and creating them. And I think that's why You know, you heard Mayor booted it yesterday before the Transportation Committee talking about how that job Department of Transportation is going to be behind so much job building itself and I so I think that you do have to keep your eye on the ball, obviously with Kobe, But you also need to have something beyond that. So that when this is under control that it The pins, you know, aren't in a shambles as they may have been when when he took over its animal on the lot. Yeah. Major infrastructure changes in a major infrastructure bill that does serve that general Master, which is Cove it, you know, I think and helping this nation out of sort of the economic ashes of what covert is produced. So it would be great to see that as well. I wanna ask you about the, um The maggot people on the Cuban on people. And you know those that rallied and Lead that insurrection into the capital. What happens to them? And where are they settling in political life there in Washington? Well, I mean, you know there was there was a judge who handed down a home confinement toe one of them yesterday, and his words were the Constitution. One and the arrests are happening in the sentence that he was handing down is because the Constitution work because she had a lawyer, and there was a prosecutor. I think that's sort of the general feeling here is that the law enforcement is taking care of this and they're doing a very good job with the prosecution's happened. We don't know. But you know there. Our reports, and I haven't recorded on this at all. So I'm not. I don't know it. But I do know that in these sorts of moments when the loss happens when you know, toe body became president to their foolish fantasies. Um uh, they That wasn't going to happen, and it did happen. And then when something like that happens, a lot of this fringe elements of sort of fades. Ah, lot of it stays and a lot of what informed some of the scarier elements of that movement haven't gone away. But they don't either have an embracing presidents on Capitol Hill right now, to the extent that they have one of the White House before least not in embracing, enabling Andre have a Democrat who's Who's the president? Right now? It does seem that there's this huge Detail on and it's hard to explain it any other way here that we should go back to complaining about the things that we complained about four years ago, and we could go back about two being irate over legislation and personalities, but not Toe have to be sort of inundated with them all the time, and I think that's where the fringe players tend to fade. And I think that will happen. But I'm also optimistic about stuff when I want to make me that I shouldn't be. But I do feel optimistic about that. Well, you know, I'm always pessimistic about things, and I'm seldom let down by people because they tend to disappoint always. And I would suggest that while Trump, who was the leader of this parade, and he just like leading a parade, he didn't care what the parade was really about. And he knew he had, you know, staunch supporters while he's gone the world and I hate to always talk about I know you've spoken on Fox News. Oh, A and all the rest they produce. A rallying area and they have voices there that can take Trump's place in parade that may not have the same organizational structure, but it allows it to sustain itself. As you say, you know, they fade away on some level they do fade away. The fervor made their them detained there, but it was there before right. It didn't go anywhere. It was just enabled by by a powerful force like it never had before. So you could have Rush Limbaugh on his vacuum in Sean Hannity and his vacuum and Laura Ingraham and heard that vacuum and my pillow and his vacuum. It doesn't matter if they don't have someone important touting them, And now they have important people saying, You guys stay out of the room on die, even even people like them. Of light mindedness realized that there's other currency. There are other ways to play those cards and I saw and that's what I'm not saying it just all of a sudden disappeared with with the notes of office. It didn't at all, but it's certainly um was was its respirator was the president and he's gone now. And so it's gonna have to find itself its way into other places, and it won't have the prominence that had for that. The spirit of history. So political expert uncertain I did have a quick thing We're no, I was just gonna point out to that when they took away his bullhorn on Twitter how much disinformation went away as well. Um, so true, so true, and you know, and watching Jen Psaki is the White House press secretary. Now, um, you know, diving and avoiding and evading and being creative with answers, But he's not lying and and she's doing and that does back to complaining about things that we got so used to complain about before. It doesn't excuse it and there they promised transparency and they better give it. But part of being that it's in that job is avoiding hard answers to questions that the White House isn't prepared to answer yet, Um It's refreshing, right? I mean, it is like getting that mosque you can you can..

Thousands Of Airline Workers Facing Unemployment As Aid Package Stalls In Congress

NPR's David Shaper reports. A nation's airlines are at a crossroads. Or maybe I should say cross runways at the start of the year. On average about 2.5 million people were flying every day. Now that's plummeted to around 700,000, and until there are widely available vaccines or treatments for covert 19. Most passengers won't be coming back any time soon. You can't run an airline that a third the size it was and expect to keep all the same people. Elaine Backer is an airline industry analyst for investment Bank Cowan. "Congressional inquiry inquiry has has found found damning damning evidence evidence of of failures failures at at both both Boeing Boeing and and at at the the Federal Federal Aviation Aviation Administration Administration in in the the development development and and certification certification of of the the 7 7 37 37 Max, Max, the report says. Thes failures contributed to to Mac's plane crashes, killing 346 people NPR's David Shaper. The House Transportation Committee investigation finds that there was no singular technical floor pilot failure that led to the deadly 7 37 Max. Plane crashes in Indonesia in October of 2018 in Ethiopia the following March. Instead, it describes the circumstances that led up to them almost like a perfect storm, calling it the horrific culmination of a series of faulty technical assumptions by Boeing's engineers. The lack of transparency on the part of Boeing's management and grossly insufficient oversight by the FAA. The report details Boeing's flawed design of a new automated flight control system on the plane and mistakes and using outdated and faulty assumptions of pilot response, as well as a culture of concealment. Keeping information from the FAA, its customers and the pilots who would fly the plane. There's something that came out of this that's just mind boggling. House Transportation Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio oversaw the inquiry and says What's mindboggling is that both bowing in the FAA contend they followed proper procedures. And found the 7 37 Max to be compliant. That's the bureaucratic word it was compliant, but the problem is, it was compliant and not safe and people died. The report also details how Boeing employees were under enormous pressure to keep costs down in the plane on schedule. Aviation subcommittee chairman Rick Larson says misguided priorities have senior management drove a number of troubling decisions. In one case, senior management went as far as selling countdown clocks in conference rooms. Making clear to Matt employees meeting production timelines. Rather than safety was a top priority. The congressional investigation is one of many into what caused the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines 7 37 Max Plane crashes. Christine Negroni is an aviation journalist and author of the book The Crash detectives, and she says, while much of this information isn't new in the hole, what is to me astonishing about the report? Is the death of the sickness and the deep history off both FAA and Boeing, knowing that there were problems with the redesign of this airliner. And the obliviousness of both parties and recognizing that this was a problem that needed to be addressed. Another thing too grown, he finds remarkable is that a number of people did raise safety concerns about the 7 37 Max, but those were either inadequately addressed or just dismissed by bowing. Many of them never seeing the light of day of the F A. A. And that's an especially painful realization for the families of those who died in the max crashes. It angers us to see how how much going did to cover this up and how much f a A has done. To help them cover it up. Michael Stew, Mo's daughter, 24 year old Samuel arose. Stew Moa was on the plane that crashed last year in Ethiopia. He believes evidence in this report now shows that the first plane crash in Indonesia was preventable but then covering up to keep the max in the air after the lion air crash. So that it crashed again and Ethiopian killed. My daughter was unforgivable. In a statement of Boeing spokesman says the company has learned many hard lessons from the plane crashes and its mistakes. And has made fundamental changes to the company's safety, culture and protocols as a result. How's Transportation Committee is now drafting legislation to improve FAA oversight and certifying planes. Senate Committee is expected to take up its own FAA reform bill later today.

Panel's report blasts Boeing, FAA for crashes, seeks reforms
"In the Federal Aviation Administration will be willing to make big changes needed to fix problems. It cost two deadly 7 37 MAX crashes. Staff members from the Transportation Committee blamed the crashes that killed 346 people on failed government oversight, design flaws and a lack of action at Boeing, despite knowing about the problems The committee, in their words, referring to it as horrific, horrific culmination of failed Government oversight committee says the Max complied with FAA safety regulations. Even though the plane's crashed in Indonesia and Ethiopia members say it shows the need for reforms. Boeing says it's made changes and it's cooperated with House investigators. The comment, though, has not come this morning from the FAA. On this report, Nissan has revealed its new sports car

Administration issues coronavirus guidelines for air travel
"With American United and a few other airlines now filling some planes to capacity. The Trump Administration released guidelines to minimize the risk of spreading the corona virus and air travel. But most are measures already implemented like enhanced airplane cleaning, no touch check ins and physical distancing in lines. The administration won't require blocking out middle seats or wearing face masks, which angers House transportation Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio. There's very few I think worth environment to be in than trapped in a tube that's crammed full of people who are rubbing shoulders with recirculated air. For five or six hours flying across the country. Consumer groups also say the guidelines are inadequate and want the safety measures. Federally mandated
