Is it going to be a few years. Do you think he's has a chance to be that kind of player this year. I think he can be what. Aj green wants as a rookie and then some now in not that. Aj not that he's better than aj was as a rookie but like numbers wise because of the opportunities because of the quarterback he has because of the offense and the way. The game is like age as a rookie was probably more ready for the nfl Just because he had been season. That george wasn't coming off of a year plus layoff and I in everything that goes in with that that being said joe different than green but it just seems like when the lights come on. He's ready to go. You know i. it's you know. We'll see this week. He's going to go for a bengals record. So he's tied with green the only two receivers in bengals history touchdown catches in their first. Two games are green in tomorrow. Chase and chase can get a third straight alas nap greens record so no i. I think expectations are that high. And i think that he can tap the thousand yard mark so to speak especially with the seventeenth game but You know will. He will that production lead to wins. You certainly hope so. And that's something that we need to see because it is good as chad. Johnson will hasn't he was my favourite bengal play. Maybe my favorite bengal player ever in. Who's just brought so much excitement to the city. I don't remember him dominating pittsburgh much i remember. Tj cushman zodda. More than chad. Because i think they doubled him. An instant impact right away in the secondary in that defensive backs room in with the safety is one thing that he did and he said he's stolen from joe hayden is he moved jar and he created this low system. Where you know. If you're caught loafing early in camp during practices you gotta put money in the jar and at the end you know. It was a way to hold everybody accountable. At the end no one was put money in the jar because they retired to put money in the jar and he said he stole it from joe haden in pittsburgh and it was kinda cool that he brought that over and they all went out to eat afterwards. And that's been one of the more surprising. Units i think is the secondary it for all the new faces that they've brought in trae. Weinstein play a game but mike Has certainly been a reliable nickel corner. Adding pressure You guys know firsthand. How as a blitzer definitely equality quality tackler and. then she'll bail was yahoo they added. It's been a nice one two combo so we'll see if trae wayne's can go this week i don't think so i think it's gonna be another week. But when he comes back. I think the bengals could have an above average secondary and mike. Helton's a huge farnum at from a leadership standpoint and obviously on the field guarding opposing slot corners. Different defense personnel wise looked and is it still the same defensive scheme we seen or or should we be looking for a different style. Defense to know it's you know it's that three four style that you've seen. I just think that the pieces fit better to answer kind of that. First part of your question. I think they've exceeded expectations. Really have your right. They've invested a ton of money on defense so much so that people like me. I think have questioned why they evan. Invested more on the offensive line with the resources at that being said this defensive line looks much improved specifically the interior of this defensive line. Dj reader has been a beast in. He only played five games last year due to a quad injury in. He looks just as good as ever looked to be quite honest. The first couple of games of the year and you look really good and limited reps in the preseason but then they went out and they got larry jobe from the browns they. They went out and got multiple different Proven defensive tackles traded for bj l. from the giants and he had two sacks in week one So yeah. I think that the interior of this defensive line is where they're going to try to make their. Hey not only pressuring opposing. Quarterbacks obviously slowing down a guy like nausea amazon sunday in for two weeks at least the retooling of this defense as has paid off and they look like they're going to be much improved from what we've seen over the past couple of years now. Speaking of that defense they could have a pretty big game Getting after ben rothlisberger of course calling spate of spayed. The steelers offense has struggled to say the least through two weeks. This far Do you can anticipate that ben. Ross rothberg could be in for another beating against the bengals front. I i think that certainly the plan for the bengals right and It it's to me. it's going to be much easier. Said than done 'cause we we've seen it for a decade and a half. Now of ben being hurt being being up and then he's going to go out and throw for four touchdowns right and you know that's what happens against the bengals..

"Dot com with you for a pittsburgh steelers injury report podcast and this is one of those where i have to be honest. There are very few days very few games where a fan base might be looking forward to seeing what the injury report has in store for their particular team in the pittsburgh steelers fan base absolutely was anxious to see what this wednesday report will be leading up to the week. Three game against the cincinnati bengals at heinz field so as all the fans know there were a ton of injuries that the steelers dealt with leading up to the week. Two game against the vegas raiders. Did joe haden with a groin. Devin bush with a groin missed the game or inactive. Carlos davis missed the game with a knee injury. T. j. watt left the game with his own one injury tyson alalu broke his ankle and therefore he's basically almost done for the year and then deontay johnson. He was injured at the very end of the game. And so with all these injuries and then you come to find out on tuesday during my tomlin's press conference that alex highsmith has a groin. Injury and ben rothlisberger has a pectoral injury and steelers fans. Heads are about to explode. You feel like the scene from dumb and dumber where there are pets. Heads are falling off so wednesday. Finally rolls around. Everyone's waiting four o'clock. Pm eastern time here comes. The injury report here is what it is. Let's keep in mind. This is wednesday and why normally always say. Take it with a grain of salt. People do take it with a grain of salt. It's just wednesday. This injury report carries some weight not a ton but it carries some weight. You understand as we go through it. All right quarterback ben rothlisberger who normally gets wednesdays off. He had a pact has a pectoral injury as his designation and did not practice. I'm not shocked. Barajas burger did not practice today. He was in front of the media wednesday morning. He said it's it's definitely hurts him. Non throwing shoulder. So that's a good thing. But still a pectoral injury is it can be a serious injury. Depending on the injury itself did not practice. we'll see if he returns in some shape reform on thursday wide. Receiver deontay johnson. Who like i said injured. His knee at the very last play did not practice alice highsmith's with his groin. Injury did not practice. Carlos davis with his knee. Injury did not practice and eric. Hebron brown was given the day off. Coach's decision and so right off the bat. You're thinking jeff. This is awful news. All these players you just named are pretty important. Players didn't even practice. It gets better. So joe haden with his groin injury. He was able to practice in a limited fashion. I know not a full participant. But that's him working his way back. We'll see how the body heals meaning. How's it respond to his workload on wednesday the thing about groins. It's very similar to hamstring. Right when you think you're fine just takes one little movement and then you're you're back on the shelf so we'll see. Keep your eye on. Joe haden a new injury. Justin lane with an achilles limited. "I don't think he practiced on thursday. We've yet to see the practice report for friday but that defensive line can still cause problems but as long as the keep them at bay. They should have no problem long. It's secondary agreed on. And then they do have roquan smith there as well a guy who can can make some place so i mean there. There're players there but you know that's secondary was exposed last weekend had A report pf score as a pass defense unit where we go next. John so wanted to combine a couple of questions here. Forgot where it's all the first one. But we had a question about ally. Apple andrey hopkins essentially. Both players didn't necessarily play well. So you have some black from blackthorn youtube. Do you think apple will play or do you think we should try out of the players. A cornerback and there was a question about to hopkins if he continues to play. Well do you think bengals will look for other options at center. Unfortunately with apple. I think it's just essentially a wait and see situation with trae. Wayne's i think there was a report from bengals practice today that said wayne's looked to be the next phase of coming back potentially practicing next week i think they're just gonna keep apple out there for as long as they kind of need to because they don't really have other options but i think i do think that there is still some faith in the organization for him to play a little bit better and you could say the same thing and more with we hopkins. Hopkins admitted that he had a bad game. were technique related as he said it a press conference oh. I don't think that they're going to look at other options for a guy that they have full trust and faith who just happened to have a bad game. I i agree with you. I think. I think hopkins is a guy who safe in. It's the one the one position i think they would be open to things around or switching things up. There's continued issues. Xavier sue fellow on the right guard spot because they have jackson carmen waiting. Who by the way was limited. I think on on thursday or friday with An issue but they have a second round pick waiting there. they've got the auntie. Smith showed well in preseason and whatnot albeit at the left left guard spot. But you know they've got some options there regard. The options as center at center are pretty limited. So in you know again. I think they're giving trae hopkins the benefit of the doubt that he was coming back pretty quickly from a significant knee injury in that. There may be a little rest early on there. But you know. I don't i. It sounds like phillips is not going to get his shot this week. It sounds like it's going to be eli apple. And there's been kind of some cryptic tweets on from various phillips to i don't know is is twitter account as always kind of an intriguing one to me but So i mean it would seem that apple's getting the start this week and this is all just a plan for two. Maybe three games until they get trae wayne's back but i would say of the spots that we're talking about You know i think right guard is the one that they would maybe be a little. There's a little shorter leash on because there are more viable options. Obviously the the leash is kinda short with with Apple over there as well. Because wayne's conceivably gonna come back in the next week or two and good on darius phillips like people always are adding him when he tweets some cryptic stuff about Just assume it's about the bengals and he's not about the bengals in the fact that you're slandering night maybe not slain You're bashing a guy who's playing in the. Nfl is my teammate. Like enough of this like I'm sick of it. So on him standing that he he yeah. He doesn't pull punches. How did the interior of the o. Line do according to your eyeball test. Was it really just hopkins. Looking bad. did hopkins have any really good plays. I thought they played decent I think there's obviously the the miss block from sufi Borough hit on the touchdown but other than that. I don't think sue feel necessarily played that bad. I thought he looks a lot better. Run blocking them. What we saw last year. And i could just be a testament to to the schemes and designs of frank pollack. Maybe some some new added on coaching. As well i think. Spain played about expectation in the do think hopkins played decently. Well outside of just the really really bad place but unfortunately that's the reality for offense lineman if you're caught on if you're cod before k. No messing up and getting your quarterback a couple times like that is going to be. The narrative comes out of the game and obviously hopkins. Shouldn't be happy about it. But i think for the most part he played. Okay is just unfortunately those dad plays they count for more than the eighty percent of the good place have i. I would agree in this. You know we we all like to use. Pf as a really good barometer is to help players performed in a specific game and in scenarios and whatnot but I mean it's it's an. It's close to a perfect system but it still imperfect system in there are biases. There are different things that go into this in and you know misreads of certain plays and all that kind of stuff. So you know while. Pf is a great barometer for to use as As a gauge or how players performed in a game you know sometimes those numbers don't speak the entire story On some things. So you know. I i would say. They played better than their scores would indicate but i still don't think there was anything that was like. Hey you know this they got. They got robbed by. Pf on the scores there were issues. There were issues so I i do think part of it is week one. There's gonna be rust. Dre hawkins coming back from that injury as your fellow didn't get it you know. I mean he was injured for a good portion of last year as well so these guys still get used to things new offensive line coach as well. So they're trying to get get used to some things but not not particularly was it as bad as maybe some of those scores indicated. I don't think so. Either i'm a big proponent of pf. i think it's an extremely valuable resource. I do think though for people who are just starting to get familiar with it. It's better to look at scores over a multi week period rather than isolate weeks scores. Because i think the processes great. I still don't one hundred percent understand it..

Espn fifteen thirty amid the win yesterday. The afterglow of yesterday's win we had jesse bates talking with you guys for the first time in weeks. You know he he did the thing with horton lapham in mid august on the bengals official channel. But but there hadn't been a press availability in a in a very long time. And what did you make of what he had to say. He's not super thrilled. I mean he wanted to get it done the he expected to be able to get it done and it seems that he should be the obvious next in line after sam hubbard got done and it didn't and you said he's gonna go play pissed off you know quote and quote unquote this year. And you know it's just. I hate this. I hate it. I hate this. It's just it's just not. It shouldn't be like this. Oh it shouldn't be like this with with something that's this easy and should be this easy and over whatever and you know i feel like i've talked to death so i'll go down the road again but it's like the adjust. You can't claim you had to pay top of the market value for free agents like trey hendrickson and trae wayne. Dj reader and hilton ogundare. That you had to do it right and people say. Oh you overpaid okay. I'm okay fine. It had to do it right. "I get why people were upset about the call but at the end of the day you play to win the game where andy. Reid did the same thing against the cleveland. Browns had henny as his quarterback he ends up converted than everybody lifts these guys up and said you know. There are some of the smartest guys on the field when it goes wrong. You obviously get the you know the criticism forward but for me. Personally i understand it because it's a mindset in the sense of message to the other team into your own same that now we're gonna. They can't stop us. We're gonna get this first down and it didn't work out but look how defense held up. Even though they ended up getting the touchdown they had worked for and that was from the thirty yard and they essentially had to wait until mike Gets beat on the very last opportunity for them to get the touchdown so the defense still stood tall honestly like. I'm glad that you know. I don't want to say that. We should continue to go for from our thirty yard line in our lead. That zach kinda had this teaching lesson to learn that like okay. Now i do do this. This could happen. We could potentially lost this game. But i do want him to your plan at chiefs or you're playing and you're trying to get these ws gopher the w don't go for the tie don't go for the safe thing always because at the end of the day your job is on the line you gotta get w so understood to where his mindset was but also understand that people that are like why would you do that but at the end of the day he ends up. You know winning this game. His team pretty much. Try to put him back on his back to make. It seem that he made the right decision. Going for that. And you get things that happened like you said with the davin cook turnover at the end. But just imagine you know. Are we really going to jump on a guide ahead. His team go out there and have won. The whole gang with other guy had his guys give up ten penalties and just almost half like they play very disciplined. They play with the hair on fire. You gotta give a shoutout to this. Coaching staff for what they were able to do. Frank pollack with the line. They weren't perfect by any means but most of the sex that i saw watch it. They were like blitzes from other players. Who were just incorrect. Blitz pickups and. That's that's something you could clean up. I i thought one or two of those would just show one of them legitimately. He could he. He wished threw it away. The other the other two pressure space probably would have been a disaster situation For him to try to throw it away so some meat out of the sex it was like to legitimate sex. Worry too much pressure on early on. They got be better than that. I'm not senator office aligned with like elite but not definitely anybody just paying attention suggest bisects like you didn't watch the game like the the run blocking why miles miles above whatever they whatever they lsu. Let's keep that energy going because it clearly had an impact on this game having fifty thousand in the seats and them having so many false start pillories but the defense in my opinion the completely different When you talk about just the ferocity that they were playing with the entire game. Just plain leanness. How plane it was like. You're really seeing lou. Anna removes fits on is defense in Able to play. I think that that was a huge x factor in the game and once those two worlds came together with the offense getting on page for the defense because the defense was on page literally in my opinion the whole game after what really kind of messed them up on. "One you know so what this does is this paves the way for apple maybe But it sounds like eli. Apple is going to be the guy that's gonna get the nod right away in relief of wayne's to to get the start corner it's been an up and down career for ally apple to say the least that's maybe being a little generous so ally apple will get the start opposite of louisiana. The good news that was one of the best players in all of angles. Training camp New face in he. He struggled last year but he was injured. So i think they'll be okay and that other side they may try and things up With with a combination of apple darius phillips and others Playing the outside we will see but trains will now be out there and it is a shame because he's not going up against his former team. Here's the deal. Though wayne signed a three year forty two million dollar contract last off season and then of course he had the chest injury last year If the bengals decide to cut next wayne's next offseason they'll be on the hook for five million dead cap space while saving eleven million that according to over the cap So i i still don't think that the bengals look. There's still a whole season to see how this plays out here with trae wayne's maybe he comes back after a couple of games ends up being a solid starter. Form in. this is just another bump in the road here in this contract. Obviously if these things keep occurring and he doesn't see the field bengals will have kind of not a lot of choice here to the than to probably cut him but that's down the road. We'll see what happens right now. This seems to be a short term injury in a short term issue but trains will not be suiting up against the vikings against his old team which is a bit of a shame. That were extremely d to the point where i would even make wagers In the off season on the bengals because they were just that d.c now. I'm not saying that they're tremendously. But i think at this point where you're starting to see you have to make cuts in hard decisions between guys that are playing on third units. I mean i think that that states the roster is pretty deep especially when you look at the safety position you also had a henderson out there making some plays you talk about the corner. Position obviously has taken some hits so the corner not as much. That was one of the things in this game where. I saw the miami quarterback that kit threw for three hundred and forty yards. There were definitely some issues there but they did use darius phillips on the outside now don't get him confused with antonio phillips dare phillips did play on outside for the majority of this game so it seems that that's how they're going to try to get past the Trae wayne situation. I think that's essentially how they'll do that. but The safety position is deep. I think that the tight end position is definitely deep there several different positions that you can look at it and say defensive line where they've got guys that are possibly started quality still be playing even even the kicking position. If you consider austin cyber a good kicker i personally don't but He is at least a i. Guess starting quality or pitch kicker kind of quality kind of guy and then you also saw evan mcpherson with a fifty seven yard field goal. He's got a boot on special teams. Look pretty good brandon wilson. I believe also had an injury. But they're going to have to figure out what they're gonna do with these corners because they just did not look good just to be honest with you have to end number twenty nine somebody in a at number twenty nine thirty nine and other people need to get cut a set So i think personally that is one of the weaknesses. They'll have to look in in like museum. Said they'll have to look at free agency or who gets cut onto probably bring in another corner of but outside of that. I was really impressed with some of the things that they did. Especially the second office a unit and in the trenches we talked about the trenches a lot. I think that offense align once again had another great show. I mean they've done that. This entire Preseason which has been the biggest thing right so you can have people talk about chase and you guys noted. I was team. So i'm officially team chase now. Once he was drafted to the team. You have to be tamed. Chase right. But i see a lot of people saying you know. We should have drafted peninsula and this and that and you can tell people really are watching. What's going on in preseason. Because vanessa will struggle. He's giving up three sacks. I believe and three games. I might be wrong at number. But i think he at least has given up through sex in. I think if. I'm not mistaken pro. Football focus said panay was the lowest scoring lion According to them. I think he had a great of thirty five or something like that so i get it right. You're mad that the bengals didn't pick chase I mean didn't didn't pick panams are but you know using is not the right scenario to go about it because he struggled looked if not worse than chase So obviously chased has things to work on and we can work with that but the main thing that people are ignoring with that argument and when i made the argument for team tool it was because of my lack of concern are my concern with the offensive line at the lack of concern but my actual concerned with office align in obviously in the preseason. This offensive line is look good. I mean let's just keep it a buck like yeses. Preseason but people aren't even allowed to breathe. On joe borough brandon allen in shurmur in those are things that are really looking a notable in the free season you also had jackson carmen get some time in their. You also had michael jordan. Get some time. So the smith also was out there. He did have a play where i believe. He may have wrote an ankle or something like that but they claim that he was fine. You were able to see that this bengals offense line is going to be ready to go. And so obviously the chase. The chase play was disappointed in things of that nature. But you gotta take away some of the positives. You talk about the trenches. You look at the defense early on the pass rushes there. Those were the two weaknesses that a lot of people were looking at including myself before we came into the season so frank pollack has done a great job with that a. We'll have to see how joe borough plays week one and the other thing. Is you still have other receivers. This around him with if you're marches isn't up to speed by one. You still have tyler. Boy you still have to higgins. So he's going to get enough time to try to get it together and if he doesn't you still have agitate waiting in the wings in that is what makes this team so good so loaded is because they have all those options and that's why you have agitate because you can always it to him But we'll have to see who makes this roster how things shake out. I personally think some guys. That really did some things tonight to really help their chances of making this roster. I'd probably say dan moss thaddeus moss obviously a measure. Wilcox did have a catch. But i think moss with him getting more catches may have outdone him I don't think mason. Shrek did anything to really deserve a roster spot and then you talk about the defense areas highs. We've been talking about it for a while. I think he did something tonight. I think noah spence did enough to make sure that he stays on a roster especially if potentially kareem is her. I don't know that's alleged. We'll have to see how that plays out on. Obviously kareem definitely made some ways for hisself as well and then you also look at some of the other people jack west patrick. I think he did enough to make that fourth roster spot s just my thought personally but i think he did enough. You know three. Three solid showings. I think he deserves a spot. And you also talk about a irwin. I think irwin may have done enough to Possibly make this roster. We'll have to see how it shakes out. But he did have some important catches and we'll have to see where that goes. But those guys i think did enough guys that i'm still not sure about you. Know i was big on jalen davis thing. I didn't notice him much tonight. I don't know if it's that he didn't play as much or what. It was But would like to see what he can do but there's some other guys that probably could have done some more to make more of a case but overall. I was actually intrigued impressing entertained by this game because not only did you have guys playing will in some instances but these guys are fighting for roster spots in it is. It's kinda hard to tell which guys are gonna make it. When you're looking at a scotty washington where you're looking at some of these guys. That are just really on the bubble where you're like. I'm not sure that they're gonna make trivia on. Williams has a great game so i think that that's one of the things that i actually took away from this. But we'll have to see i n stanley morgan was another guy that had something to prove but i think outside of that we kind of know where to bengals will be headed. We'll have to see which guys get claimed possibly on waivers Which direction they're going to really go in The dolphins quarterback somebody said that he bought out. Come on guys but we don't need your reaction you're all we don't care about practice during the season at all. It's only for this month because it's the only thing that's happening in its win. They're the rawest right. They're still learning the system. Things are being installed especially right and it's look is it worth pointing out of course. If he has four drops in practice we should mention it. But it doesn't mean everything needs to be taken to this extreme and in everything's going there one way or the other because everyone has a voice in jake's magnified and like you said like when paul writes about a thing he reports. I think he's their fourth corner so to speak. Various phillips is five if he needs to play outside will but he's mike helton's backup in both are going to make the team and then as for jalen davis he's got a good shot at at six cornerback spot and we'll see if he can build off of what he's done throughout training camp through two preseason games on sunday but as of now i have him on my fifty three. I think he's played great. I think he's earned a spot and we'll see but especially if wayne's is dinged up or maybe it's a serious injury where he's going to be out miss a little bit of time hopefully not but if that's the case then i certainly see a path. We're davis is on this team week. Want personally speaking. I hope wanes is healthy for week. One because yeah i i will be there but i just for for for him Don't up against his former team. I just hope he goes out as well and just shuts all of us up to talk about you. Know the the contract and his injuries and all that kind of stuff. I don't know if john you have any thoughts on the the question here from clarkin toronto about the defensive backs situation we talked about The potential impact of elaine's injury because we don't know the severity the he's being listed as day-to-day so who knows how long that actually is But potentially one of winston rose or tony brown could potentially make week. Depending on how bad wings injury actually is and they would just need six quarterbacks for that. But james like like jalen davis mailing been in the slot increase Dairy still come off the bench. If mike gets hurt or that would go now to davis on precipice been has. That part is interesting. I would say as of now. It's still probably phillips. But maybe 'cause it's weird because if you ask by jake he's going to say yeah. Philip seems like he should be outside more with his ball skills and stuff. You'd put them outside but it seems like the coaching staff likes him as the nickel. But if you have another capable nickel behind mike helton then maybe you switch it up a little bit so in. If davis leapfrogs phillips at the state i agree. But i do think that if eli apple gets hurt again. And he's been battling injuries in training camp. Then it's philip philip's we'll go out of the slot. He'll go outside and jalen davis will go to the they're not gonna put jalen davis like strictly a slot corner. I think because of his size he's like five eight or maybe he's five ten. I don't remember but he's like if they have to jalen davis outside. It might be rough so to john's point. I hadn't really considered that. The possibility of tony browner winston winston rose actually making the team. I don't think they make the fifty three. I think there'd be like practice squad call ups in that first week if they need it. Because i don't think they can spare fifty three man roster spot for a seventh corner and that's even if they put josephus i on the i before cut down which i think they might have to get like a very positive. You know one week because they have some time so like they'll probably do like an mri. Maybe a week after the surgery and see how things are going because sometimes with these surgeries they don't like to repair doesn't take and they end up having to cut it out because whatever they tried to do in. "What has been something. That has led annoyed. You i guess with what's been coming out of camp that you've that you've unfortunately ad talk about your is your thoughts and your perception of how training camp discourse has become now is that like changed with with things kind of going back to this. There's something that stand out to you that you wish you didn't have to talk about but unfortunately add to do because it was topical. Well yeah i mean to me. It's the it's the fact that were you almost have to dissect everything and then everyone's going to have a reaction okay. So in hell. I've talked with paul dana junior about this at the athletic he writes about how demars and separating that much against Right in it's like blows up because the fantasy heads get it. And i love fantasy football arm on a bunch of leaks. I'm not knocking that but all of a sudden it's an issue now. Tomorrow's and getting separation or borough looked weird on the pocket and now it just blows up and two days later. He's fine after answers questions about it and we've seen him grow right it and so i think that's part of it is like there's so many eyeballs on a you know every little nugget that comes out so like the jomar thing in washington like he had three drops in all these people reacting to it. Well he's handwriting issues. It wasn't a shock really right. It was something that we had talked about since. Ot as in rookie minicamp. I'll act on mangles and You know hopefully ironed out. 'cause he's looking better the past three days but i think that's it the minute show of. Oh my god. This happened today. i can't believe it right. Trains gets injured the hamstring. And i've made this point the last few days on our podcast and i've said look like receivers dropped passes every single receiver in the nfl. Ninety nine point nine percent of receivers in the nfl drop pass in a season especially the guys that are high volume. You don't really care or maybe bothers you for a little bit. If you're as drops past. But then if he goes in catches five more for hundred yards and a touchdown which he did on thursday yesterday right. Then you don't care. And so i think that you know there's all this hyper reaction and and hyper scrutinise ation of things. And it's just like this is probably been going on in camps for forever right we were talking about jerry. Riots remember james yesterday. "You know injured. And we're taking is that have are coming off an injury laden season and it just turned into an absolute turnstile with the offensive line. But when you look it's like hey let's drive penny soul but as i alluded to. That's why would have taken. But you know as i mentioned. It's like the amount of three wide receiver sets. That zack taylor plays. He believes his third. Wideout is starter. And that's just how he's ingrained. The other problem is penny. School has said that he's terrible right tackle and so if you think you already have your franchise left tackle. That's why that's partly why they didn't take because they weren't sure they could kick him right in that he would obliged to playing that position and he's proven to not be overly great from that position so he says but at some point you just a hanging to go get the best left tackle in this draft will figure out who's moving to right. We'll figure out what we're doing because right now. The interior of this offensive line is just horrific. So you have to be strong other places. But then they also went out and signed riley reef. So maybe that's the patchwork that they wanted at right tackle but again it falls in line with what they've done for the last decade like we're gonna take someone else's old scrap heaps the minnesota vikings who needs some offensive line. How like riley reef walk right. So it's just it's just a mess organizationally and where you see them. Spend more so on. The defensive side is is a little bit of an issue as well. Yeah you mentioned that spending on the defensive side. Second season arroyo. They've gone on a shopping spree so to speak in free agency this time over one hundred million dollars including allocating a huge amount of money to trey hendrickson. The pass rusher from the new orleans saints. And when you look at the bengals goner familiar faces like kara lawson gino atkins. We know wanted it out william jackson. We talked about an impact. He's going to have in a new destination and mackenzie alexander on what was a semi friendly franchise friendly bill of only one year but this is a bengals team bottom half and total defense. Each of the last five seasons worst defense against the run over the last two years and last season they gave up the most plays of twenty plus yards while also accumulating the fewest sacks definite correlation. Between what can we expect for the bengals defensively. I mean it's hard to get worse. But do we see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel for what the stop unit can become. I'm really surprised. Lewin aroma will kept his job. But there is this bond there between him. And zack taylor. They're both in miami together. But this is really an organization that loves to procrastinate and use bubblegum to fix its holes. It's it's cincinnati. Just kind of what they do. So i i was a little surprised that they kept defensive. Coordinator is the lowest prices. Iron the first place. The bengals defense did deal with below average injury luck. So let's factor part of that in. Dj reader only played five games. He was their big signing last off season. Trae wayne's was another large. He missed the entire season with a pack but since he played a bottom ten schedule of offenses and finished sixth worst in defensive efficiency. That can happen. The scheduled projected offenses and passing. Offense does increase by tiny bit this season from a construction standpoint. You would think. Just kind of glossing over this as i did that. Cincinnati has a clue right six most expensive defensive lines seventh most expensive secondary one of the cheapest linebacker unit you like manage team analytically savvy. They really allocate their funds. Great but when you dig into the players. We've kind of hinted at this and where they've spent money. It's it's it's interesting like i. Think the defensive lines a little better than most do. But you'll let carlos lawson walk. He had a twenty four percent. Pass rush win rate last season. He signed with the jets for forty five million since he decided to spend. Forty million. On sam hubbard solid player. Number one run stop win rate but he had a pass rush win rate of ten percent six worst among qualifying defensive lineman. It's really an interesting choice to make knowing. This is a passing leak since he did sign. Trae hundreds things as you mentioned at the top there from new orleans yet. A monster season so to me. That's the definition of buying it peak after thirteen and a half sacks in the fourth is pressure right and it's difficult to project that kind of player. I know east twenty six so you know his peak might be rising but that is a tough season replicate especially when you think about this. He's only played forty five percent of snaps. The last two seasons. It's far different being arrested. Situational pass rusher going against an every down left tackle right but the defensive line is the strength of the bengals defense. They added larry ogunjobi as well but something to note since he faces a top five schedule of pass blocking offensive lines the season. So it's a massive leap. Sam hubbard needs to be better getting to the quarterback hendrickson can't regress if he's going to fill the devoid of lawson. There's question marks in the secondary. I'm not a tray winds guy. I voiced that over the years. Really bad hips thinking. He's going to fill. The void of william. Jackson is not going to happen. It's it's going to be a downgrade. They're the bengals decided to kind of go the volume route in the secondary. The last few years hoping that one guy can play to potential. So you go out. And the incas like shadow be in. Eli apple and apple reconnect with his ohio. State buddy von bell. So there's varying degrees of math with with with trae wayne's and should. Ob lie apple. Jessie bates though one of the best safeties and football. He's gonna clean up a lot of miscues from the corners. I do the mike helton signing. We'll talk to tony. Pike as he reports live from. Bengals camp. tony pike. We missed you today. Brother This is a bengal report. This is a bengals report. We just did an hour a bearcats. I've already gotten in trouble. 'cause i'm wondering at uc paulo down. Here it's just. It's a bearcat kinda day chad to be honest where we've reported to camp higher ground it. It's one of my favorite places on earth. I spent like a quarter of my life there so kodak. We meet by me sandwiches today. We had some chicken pasta gun history. A player that gained weight every training. Camp i'd my james sanders gained my jay. Sanders gained way to campfire grounds freshman year. When he showed up he was like two hundred two pounds. They wouldn't let him leave until he had eaten like four trays of food. I remember those days tony. The story has been the struggles of the offense. Yeah i wanna. I wanna flip that though. Isn't this a good thing. What are the biggest concerns we've had for this franchise for how many years now is that. The defense stinks. Isn't it a good sign that this retooled lou room defense with all these new pieces and parts are ahead of the offense at the beginning of can't because the defense is supposed to be ahead of the offense that is honestly the million dollar question right now because for three years in a row. I've come down here. And i've thought in the defensive line looks really good through cam so far that the secondary looking really good and i start to wonder like is our defense just better and then we get to the season and we see that the defensive rankings are back near the bottom an offensive line struggles. It's just so hard to tell at camp but this defensive unit that they spent money to improve looks like they gel better than what we've seen in years past it looks like they have more debt in the secondary because on different days. We're talking about two billion woozy yang. We're talking about eli apple. Trae wayne's is back practicing today. There is more depth at every level of this defense than they've had in years past and then you're relying on. Okay what can joseph aside do. What can Cam sample do. What can this young core of linebackers do now in year two that we don't talk about much so i think there's merit defense having a good camp so far it's just how are you judge them based on what this offensive line is going to be the major question. Mark absolutely tony. You've been through a lot of football camps as we just talked about most of them at camp higher ground. You get a day off after a couple of days of struggling. What do you do on that day off to kind of you know. Maybe it clear your mind or to dial in and figure out what's gone wrong. How do you handle some struggles early. And then you get to that day off where you can try to kind of figure it out. Hopefully just think. I just think you need to come back and and reset everything. He had wednesday off. This team didn't practice yesterday. That's two days. Here's what i think on. Joe borrow saad and this is just my point of view but i see a guy i. I went through rehab multiple times at the university of cincinnati and joe borough spent eight hundred plus months. Just busting his tail to rehab and try to get back here and and and what he wanted to do was get the camp and just looked like he has in the past. He wanted things to pick up right where they were. And the fact of the matter is they didn't the the the offense wasn't getting the separation on the receiving core the offensive line one block and he wasn't comfortable so then you see frustration and you could visibly see the frustration. I think that's why they gave him a day off wednesday. Unfortunately it doesn't help when you come back friday and you do team period to period. And they're both third-down pressures because the defense really has the advantage of joe borough in the third down team that they just got done with. He was one for six missed. A couple of receivers was under a ton of press your He looked a lot better in seven on seven but again. That's no pass rush coming at you. They're gonna finish up practice. They have a short practise day chad. It's period tan right now of eleven so periods. Yes eleven after after back to back off days. I love this camp schedule. We had nineteen today. Higher tony exactly exactly that it. It blows my mind just how. Nfl training camp is right now. But they're going to finish this practice with another third down pressure situation so very interesting to see how the offense bounces back. How the line can handle it and and really how joe borough can look going forward with another big weekend ahead. obviously today. saturday. Sunday all major padded practices for this bengals team. He was previously in a relationship with and has Has subsequently been released by the minnesota. Vikings He was selected thirty first overall of last year's draft. So he did start fifteen games as a rookie. He was kind of the guy that they were hoping was going to step in and alleviate the absence of trae wayne's and unfortunately that has not been the case not been the case and won't be the case. I've seen since during these camp reports. Now that goes back to two thousand seventeen or eighteen. So that's why was it so bad. He should have been picked off to other times. There were multiple stock. That again are making what you want out of them. When there's no pads on out here but From a standpoint of zero zero lanes for running backs to run through joe borough with one of his worst practices since we've seen him in the cincinnati bengals uniform and you add all those things together with a couple of snaps that were on the ground Jomar chase fumbled after. It was just floppy and bad football around from an offense that's supposed to be explosive this season and now you're getting into week number two of camp. I thought flashed in same hubbard the backfield costume havoc the The defense looked fast today and it was a struggle for for branka receivers to to get any separation on a day that the style of practice should favor them being able to get open. But now the most important part though. What about the kitchen competition. Well you know. This has been a huge competition. "But the more that you seem out there the more those weaknesses in him being a liability kinda shows up because he will give you the game breaking past flexner reception but also it's time he will get burnt quite a lot and he just hasn't really developed into a player that can give you any sense of stability and consistency so with all that said like you said phillips's pretty solid for a number four quarterback and on paper that's fine and i think overall the way that the attack addressing the depth of the position. It's also what you should do because you do not want to put yourself in a situation. Where last year off. Your cornerback sir. At best just okay. Most numbered liabilities. Like you can't scheme around bat. And they learned that the hard way last year when they had twenty brown. Jaylen davis plant significant snaps even against bad offenses. They still have success. Because you cannot have liabilities in major weaknesses a quarterback. You just cannot scheme around that. you can't hope to barely keep your head above water. So the depth. I think now with the apple. Winston rose returning. Tony brown. Returning dairies phillips. I think the depth is fine. You can survive any potential injuries that that might occur again. I think the question is how good are. The start is going to be. I think it's so dependent on. Trae wayne's being assaulted player being im- better player than it was in minnesota and he hasn't played in over a year and we don't really know what he is right now. He's approaching thirty years old. I think you're counting on mike hilton to be. That's similar claire from pittsburgh. So long wayne's being a question mark is i think is another question too. I really liked him. Coming out of colorado took a handful of years ago. He was really athletic. He was pretty Air and in the early parts of his career. He was pretty. I know a couple of cowboys. Writers really disappointed or just a little sad that they let him go even though the kind of figured it was the right decision. Based off of palace career ended. I think louisiana's the ultimate bi-lo and potentially getting high returns for who could be stolen twenty six years old. He still has that might be better. Scheme fit for what they're asking to do in cincinnati compared to dallas. I think he's honestly a huge question. Mark because i think he's taking over the spot that william jackson had last year. The right cornerback position in their keeping. Trains left cornerback. So him being the more consistent form himself in the twenty seventeen twenty eighteen twenty nineteen version of that we saw dallas. That's so huge and obviously health too because even though you're more comfortable with eli apple dairies. Phillips has your backups. Last year was just so horrendous. Have that weekend out just injuries. Galore that position. We just don't wanna see that again. So they would probably keep what five six six. Yeah yeah. I think six on the final roster I mean as we sit here today. I guess i would say you've got the three. We mentioned a woozy. A hilton and Wayne's as as your top three guys indefinite locks to make the team And then you're probably looking at phillips at four Now you've got two spots with one two three four five six others I mean i guess you go apple. And i i go there because of i think there's some familiarity there. Didn't he play under an aroma when he was in new york so You know you would. You would think that there's that that would mean something for him there and then you know what. What do you think i mean. Does tony brown get the shot. Does winston rose get the shot. I don't know i am meeting someone here. i like. I think six is the number. I think they keep less than that. I don't think they're gonna keep seven either though many think lead like phillips has experienced both in slot and on the boundary while as tony brown. Eli apple more on the boundaries. So those are like your six veterans that you're somewhat comfortable in but even even still like if it's between round jalen davis donna. Lewis winston rose the more or less splitting hairs. It really is a great opportunity for antonio phillips and he's one one of the Free agents that they have on this roster right now and. There's no one really who should be favored as the fifth or sixth. Cornerback right now. it's just it should be a dead heat interpret who secures that spot. And i don't know if phillips has lots of experience In in the slot in terms of snaps played at cornerback. Jalen davis man that position when they're suffering injuries. There obviously phillips has that experience in the past you know maybe he could be the swiss army knife or maybe he will be the primary backup. Slot cornerback to mike hilton. And that gives an opportunity for winston rose or twenty brown to secure one of the boundary. Cornerback spot. i do th- i would agree with you. That you ll apple is probably a safe bed. Just because of the first round pedigree the familiarity with an andrew I mean they signed him kind of not early but not necessarily laden agency. I think it was great. We're like like late. April mid april soap at least had him on the radar from probably the gecko and they into the. They signed him before they signed. Another office alignment so like. I think there is definitely some interest in in getting the most out of him at this point in his career. So i think eli apple safe. Just comes down to one of these former free Current free agent in antonia phillips phillips has a decent shot if he shows up comment here from our low key in the live youtube chad. I've watched apple ally apple since his days with the giants and saints. And i don't believe in him unfortunately sorry to be negative. I hope he proves me wrong. I understand that sentiment. I think john where we're going with. Eli apple you're talking about him as your number four or five cornerback not necessarily number two cornerback or or higher up. You're going to see significant snaps. Maybe pressed into starting action if there's an injury but I think it's more of an ideal situation personally. Speaking with eli apple being a little bit lower on the totem pole. Here yeah if you compare it. You'll apple to like winston rose and tony brown again like it is. Eli apple like that you know unattractive in that sense i think the context that ideally. You don't really see eli apple. He's just on special teams or he's just maybe inactive for most of the season but if they are forced you know throw one of these cornerback in onto the field..

Because we had a great show lined up for alaska last wednesday and i unfortunately had a little bit of a sudden in freak injury. Occur to me on that day So i apologize. We did not take the apologize. It's been awhile since we have not taken the air. I'm still recovering from that. Still trying to find out more about what happened with me personally but At any at any rate i You know just trying to hang in there a little bit in and work through it. But i apologize to the listeners. Because we had everything set up and then it was just kind of a freak deal and Went to the er and the whole thing so not not fun but getting through it and happy to be back talking with you. All about the bengals about mandatory minicamp and all kinds of different things going on with the cincinnati bengals with the afc north with the rest of the nfl. There's a lot of news to get to. it's been an entire week. i can't even can't even believe it. It's been an entire week before we get to the news. I want to let you know aside from this show. He was one of those guys that everybody was kind of pulling for. Unfortunately had a pretty bad injury but has gotten into. Coaching is the defensive line coach at the university of toledo. So bengals are bringing him back in this coaching program. Mike brown wide receivers coach at the university of cincinnati Tessa grossman a grad assistant in sports performance coach at illinois state university A graduate of dartmouth college which i believe runs pretty prominent dartmouth college alums in the brown family. So they've got a good A good pulse on things there. Steve langa hopefully. I am pronouncing that correctly. Offensive quality control coach at the university of north texas And then It is bill. Welsh bill walsh fellowship program. Obviously bill walsh spent some time with the cincinnati bengals so the bengals bringing in five Coaching interns. They're pretty cool stuff. There's been a lot of talk. I think the last time. Unfortunately not last wednesday but the wednesday prior we talked about jesse bates in his ranking in this pf system and all this kind of stuff but basically there is some good news here. The bengals secondary overall is listed in the top. Half by of the nfl by pro football. Focus you know. Say what you want about that but that does speak a little bit of volumes. Based on the fact that the bengals lost william jackson top corner they did bring into dobie a ymca. They did they're getting back. Trae wayne's they brought in mike hilton. They added von bell last year. Of course they have jesse bay twos emerging as one of the best defensive players in all of football it the unit ranks fifteenth in the nfl by pro football focus. Ben lindsey of pro. Football focus writes quote a collection of secondary starters that includes trains to dobie a woozy. Mike hilton von bell won't necessarily scare opponents but there aren't many weak links in this group. Either the bengals have done a good job. Solidifying the unit through free agency over the past few offseasons. It kinda reminds me a little bit with the bengals. Have done in the secondary this year. If you go back to like the first few years of the andy dalton era member. They lost jonathan joseph. We'll have more on him and a little bit. They lost johnson joseph to free agency. They got like nate clements. They got terence. Newman they've got reggie nelson. That was in twenty ten and they kind of collected these guys via trades and free agency. And all this kind of stuff and all of a sudden day You know they ended up kind of piecing together through different means a pretty solid secondary. Not one that was absolutely outstanding but one that played pretty. Well under mike zimmer and obviously that's the hope here with this group performing well under lou room. Oh mike zimmer was familiar with quite a few of those guys in that secondary before he got to the bengals in now You know this is kind of a little bit of a similar deal. Flew in a remote guys. He's comfortable with familiar with all that stuff. So pro. football focus has the bengals secondary ranked fifteenth with their rankings..
