"trae " Discussed on ESPN Daily
"An augmented, there is really one place in one place only where we could begin a story about Trae Young. So just set the stage for us to man. Where are we when are we? It's June 2nd, 2021 in Madison Square Garden. It's the first round of the NBA playoffs. It's game 5 of what has been a contentious, closely contested, but ultimately one sided series between the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks. So garden filled with the best fans in sports came back as the Knicks come back, make the playoffs for the first time in 8 years. The hawks are up three one in the series and they're up 12 points in game 5 with less than a minute to go. And Trae Young has the ball in his hands, and he's dribbling. You can call it, or it's closer to idling really. He seems to be waiting for something. And then suddenly he steps back with his feet on the edge of the Knicks logo and drains a deep three pointer with 43 seconds to go. He then turns and walks to half court, glaring right back in an arena that had spent weeks glaring and cursing and one time spitting at him. And he takes about. As young fires from way down and takes him out. Not appreciated. It should be added. Yeah, no, I remember vividly all of the middle fingers, all of the signs that were being passed out to taunt this guy, and this guy, it turns out, was acutely aware do tune of the significance of the theater. Where he was. MSG is a coveted stage for NBA players. And it's been host to a bunch of statement moments and statement games, Steph Curry recently broke the all time three point record there. There's Kobe's famous 61 point game, which was then the record for most points in MSG. There's Michael Jordan's famous double nickel game in his 5th game back from his first retirement. You're mentioning a lot of visiting players for the record here. Yes. That's true. Unfortunately for the New York Knicks, most of the most iconic moments in that arena belong. To visiting players, trace says after this performance in a press conference that I know where we are. I know it's a bunch of shows around this city. And I know what they do in the show is over. So that's pretty much what it was. Which is a statement hawks prep CEO Steve kunan described to me as genius. Now Steve kunan has deep roots in Atlanta and was in fact one of the marketers behind Sprite in the 1990s. So this is a man who knows a marketing moment when he sees one. No, it was marketing genius do tune and had made, I think everybody in New York City realized, oh, oh, I really wish we had that guy, and that that guy hadn't just done this to us. Trey is the kind of player you love to hate, right? That's a cliched figure in sports. You really love him when he's not playing for you. But you're actually secretly desperate to have him playing for you. The next desperately I think hate Trae Young and hate the fact they have to deal with him for years to come. But it's clear as well that they really want a player like Trae Young. It is one thing to be an all star. Or a superstar, or even an MVP. It is another thing entirely to be a performer. A performer genuinely relishes the theater of the stage. And the spotlight and the pressure. Especially when that audience desperately and jealously, hates your guts, so today, ahead of all star weekend. Do tune akintoye profiles Trae Young. The star point guard performer for the Atlanta Hawks, whose contradictions reveal that he is a lot more. Then what he seems to be. I'm Pablo Torre. It's Friday, February 18th. This is ESPN daily. You can just repurpose it though you can take some of your clips that are already the grand when you just put on tiktok on there well you can do fifteen seconds sixty seconds and now you can do three minutes if you go by paying now offering. It's all free. The hotel was the difference in why i don't get what makes the difference between fifteen sixty seconds or three minutes just as long as you wanna do. There's a fifteen second clip you can do or you can do. Thirty second or sixty clip. You don't have to do thirty six thirty seven and a half seconds. It can be whatever you want okay. So that's where i'm getting. We don't have to do this. But what's getting confused as it. I'll maximum of three minutes up to kind of is you could start a three minute. Only do twenty seconds of it. And then dr do that. I don't either. That's weird so i think maybe it's like well i want to keep it a min max then if you recorded directly into the app then it'll stop right. I sixty seconds because he chose sixty seconds. Because you want to keep it sixty seconds upload it you can do it can upload it yes definitely just got the new update can you. I'm calling it pedantic. Talk i like it i could get into that hate.

"Do not cut this out evidence that we were under assault by the ceiling. You are not gonna talk about phil collins. I love the might. Just put it out as three shitty stickers that are holding up is that all of them are like that three classic builder get some money back glued more expensive. I'm looking for ones. that seem a little loose. Osce one right there right above trae yet. Ragas sweetland. yeah. There's luckily for us. There's one above. Paul looks a little loose to so we'll see what else crashes down called empathy. They're gonna understand the feelings. Yeah congrats on on the working man. That's cool. I never thought you were overweight. But looking down was now looking at you. now i'm like damn trae was overweight. I knew i was a kid. As i was a fat kid like straight up. You know like as in like capital f. capital k. Like i grew up fat kid and all the sort of things that does to you mentally logically. No fat dork man so as an adult. It's been all over the place. so yeah. Since the pandemic started i've gained like twenty and then lost fifty pounds so i'm trying to have a big health. I'm trying to have a big story like that. So i'm doing the gaining part now and then it's gonna then. It's going to be cultivating mass. So that i hope so that when people seem either like wow you look great. Yeah i get to tell them some great story. I don't know what that part's going to be it. I'm just working on the getting fatter for. Yeah dude i can get in the getting fatter game. I mean i can be a first ballot hall of famer like put it on so quick. Dude it's so easy to especially when we were all locked in the house. These stayed in shape somehow. What seriously did you did. You saw a couple of people i know went in to the pandemic an intentionally. Like kinda did betray. Got in really good shape. I've always been in decent shape. Mike did you actually during lockdown. because all the gym's closed and i felt crazy. I started running and i fucking hate running. Yeah i started it. Got to the point rows running like three to five miles a day and then i started doing yoga because i needed to You know just get everything. I did was to get rid of anxiety as much as possible. So then Yeah and then the gyms fortunately open backup so yeah and also granted. I do have a faster metabolism so genetically. It's it's harder for me to get bigger. Yeah yeah Bester were you running with like mask on and stuff. Fuck no dude. Yeah no no. Everybody was wearing masks. But i was like fuck you guys. I'm a rebel. "I'm jay paul. We are straight outta vegas. And i'm jonas knocks voice of you the fan and rj. It's been a chaotic twenty. Four to forty eight hours in the ncaa as college. Athletes are now able to capitalize on name image and likeness. We've seen everything from division two and three athletes signing with barstool sports. There was an arkansas wide. Receiver signed with petsmart all sorts of fun stuff happening in game college athletics right now so i should say as a little tease. I'm going to have a full best bat here in about three minutes on the milwaukee and atlanta game six so just came up with a look at the numbers. It's it's an obvious one but name image likeness to me. There's two issues here. jonas one is. It's absurd that there were for so long these fat and happy. Ncaa types and if you've ever been or even observed any kind of bowl game type stuff. It's the swag. It's the party's it's the drinks. it's the shrimp. They put shrimp in their suit pockets. Aluminum foil to take home. It's shrimp shrimps shrimp. And then you've got kids who literally you could make. The case are the. I don't even think you make the case. I think it's a unequivocal. There are the main reasons. These games are popular. It's not the executives. it's the the players and they were supposed to be eating a roman noodles or whatever for fifty nine cents on a little hot play in a given spot. Now i get it. There's training table. And i get it. There's a lot of advantages that athletes have especially in revenue. Sports d one at certain schools. No dow but you know what they deserve that and more in the idea that have their parents come. See them play or something. They couldn't do it often times unless they did something illicit and it was like okay. Well that's fine. Just wink. Wink do it. But it's is negative. It hurts a society when you force people to break laws because if you make something illegal that should be legal and you don't enforce it you could say it's no big deal man just do it. It's a yeah but anytime the government whoever the authority is decides the you know we're gonna start enforcing that all of a sudden now like wait a minute you know can. Can they go after you even though they wink wink before. And then the thing is we all have a certain feeling when we do something that breaks the rules now. Some of us like that are certain people love break but most people don't like it to sort of force someone to break a rule to have what seems like a basic right or at least a basic benefit for being such a good player or even a division one player in a revenue sport. I think is absurd and wrong especially when it's contrasted with all the shrimp eating that's going on to me. Would i find the moore fascinating part of this. Is the whole title nine debate. So you know. Most people were no title. Nine is i think. It's fair to say a subsidy where the revenue sports will. How women's sports and these are sports that may be or or oftentimes or a net negative financially but because are subsidized by the football program with the basketball program. They get a chance to have a woman. Soccer team a women's tennis team etc and even saw a stanford when when there was issues of revenue. They were starting to cut sports a lot of sports. I think they've actually backtracked on that. But i mean the very fact that there are. These programs is driven by the revenue sports. So to me. That's a wonderful thing and anyone. That scene young women Participate in sports. I think it's unequivocal that. There's a real benefit to that. Now my point would be that now that you're gonna compensate. How do you say well. The women don't get it but the men do. We can talk about while the revenue generation. I liked the name image likeness. Because it's not about the schools given any money to these players. Let's not lose sight of that. It's the players being freed to to be compensated for what they should own anyway. This is their name their image their likeness and thus to be compensated for. That isn't what the school gave them. It's restriction that was lifted and the beauty of it is a lot of these women in some of the sports and art revenue generating have a huge social media following like collins talked about and they will make a lot of money from it so to me it feels very capitalistic. And very american. And i think it's a at least a good start in that direction and rj. We've got a good start to the weekend here for a lot of people as we have a best bet now in game six of the nba playoffs coming up tomorrow night. It is the box at the hawks and right now. Atlanta is a two and a half point favorite on pregame.com. Okay i'm shifting gears for my hot take my cold cash over heartache gear and i really like and we're gonna make a fool best bet on the milwaukee bucks plus two and a half now. We'll do a comparison here. It's real simple this handicap game. Three would be the analogous game to this trae young. But but but trae young wasn't how was healthy in that game coming in and that's where the interesting thing is but assuming trae young one hundred percent how the game three would be the analog the analogy and in that game it was milwaukee favored with janas healthy. Two by four and a half. Okay now it's atlanta by two and a half so if you do the math at seven but when you go through pick it actually is worth half as much. We'll call it a six point adjustment. Don't have to worry about the math. It's a six point adjustment. Yawn is worth about six points. So it's like okay. Healthy trae young healthy yawn is now we take on us away. We adjusted move six points. Two and a half is exactly right except trae. Young's health is a big question mark. There's a chance he might not play even if he does play. It's a great chance he's not gonna be one hundred percent so to whatever degree trae young's health is less than one hundred percent. It offers you perfect value here on walkie plus two and a half because if trae young were one hundred percent the lines should be two and a half the fact that it is and he's not one hundred percent is value full best bet walkie plus two and a half over atlanta saturday. Yeah what milwaukee did in this game that bodes well for a title run especially if they get you on his back and we're going to look at the quote unquote curse the nfl curse when it comes to having the meadow blog. What's the hard ducks hard knocks. That's right hard. Knox is the name of the show by the way mackenzie. We're gonna look at the bottom of the hour is take a gander at like the first four weeks because i think those It's kinda unique and then look at the last four weeks because there's a fatigue question because the focus of the show and also the theory is a little distracted coming in the beginning of the season so take a gander at that And again like we said. The milwaukee trend is so encouraging and it's about hustle in effort. And we'll get that in just a minute. This is the fastest growing fox. Sports radio on needs doubled last year. One hundred and eight degrees. The neon is pumpkin so rj. No janas no problem for the milwaukee bucks. They get it done last night. One twenty three one. Twelve the final milwaukee. Now one win away from the nba finals. Where do you think about sohn's jaanus. Yeah that's pretty good. Yeah it could be almost a song. His name goes well with a lot of things. If you pronounce it right a lot of people that ron. I'm not trying to name names. All right so what is impressive. Because what would you say atlanta. What was their real opportunity. How were they gonna win. What was their way to win. The game last night without way was shoot. The three right hit some threes. Get some three shooters out there. Well they hit atlanta thirty nine percent from three which is way above average. It's excellent for this team. And they may fifteenth threes fifteen may threes. Now milwaukee made nine threes. So that means there's an eighteen point deficit six may three times three eighteen point deficit. Milwaukee had against the land on threes. I this is a maker. Miss league i keep hearing but oh no. That's fine we'll give you those eighteen and win by eleven would happen but what we're seeing. Is that in every other way. Almost milwaukee dominated walkie had less turnovers or they cause more turnovers. However you want to consider right. They don't turn the ball over. Atlanta did more. They had more offensive rebounds. Now though atlanta actually rebounding quite well offensively milwaukee even batter free-throw. Ray another one of the four factors which is a famous way to look at the nba milwaukee and advantage so it literally was an example that you could give atlanta and they go about as well as possible. When it came to three point shooting. It have went better. But i mean this was a real good result for them three point wise atlanta and still they lose by double digits because things like turnovers things like offensive rebounds things like making free throws that's something quite frankly atlanta just isn't good at and trae young somehow is able to compensate for that his he and again. I'm just on this train. The trae young tran the way he transforms atlanta into a viable final. Four team where. I don't know if they're the twenty eighth best team without him but it somewhere in that range. Twenty eight twenty seven. Maybe even worse and i want to joe down to one last thing if you look at shots at the rim which is a staff that's capped and there's two issues with shots at the rim one is with the frequency is. How often do you get that kind of shot. And what's the accuracy. Which means how often do you make it. So there's a site called clean the glass. It doesn't good work with this kind of thing and rank in the percent. How so if you're the best is something. It's one hundred if you're the worst. It's one okay. The when it comes to the number of shots at the rim atlanta had was in the sixteen th percentile right really bad milwaukee was in the sixty nine th percentile. Really good if you look at the shots made at the rim. Atlanta did okay. Fifty-six percent thousand right around. Average milwaukee was in the ninety check that atlanta was in the twenty second percents. How walkie was in the ninety seven th percentile so milwaukee's really high on getting shots at the rim and they made a shocking number of them. Now you flip it and you see that at threes. It's almost to the shot. Milwaukee had less threes than they had more rim shots so it was like literally it was a trade off. It was like it. Lands gonna take a few shots at the rim and more shots at three walks. Take a bunch of shots at the rim. Less shots at three and lo and behold walking makes a ton of the rim shots which makes sense. It's right there the ram and then at three though atlanta makes more than you think. It's still not enough. They're made was sixty second percentile but you know what still not enough and he goes to show you which to me. Joan is if feels good a goes to show you that though the three is somewhat dominant. That jump shooting is important. The fundamentals that more milwaukee's coaching staff gets blamed for a lot of things. I think rightfully so but this is a very solid defensive team and a very solid fundamentals team into me without the superstars it felt like an old school game and what one was the fundamentals and it seemed like instead of them. Just saying all right. We don't have our guy that can get to the basket. We whenever we want and jaanus. So let's just stand back and shoot threes. They made a concerted effort to get to the rim. They made a concerted effort to this is going to be the easiest way for us to produce points for us to get to get things going. I mean they had four starters score twenty two plus points. In that game you know they. They didn't need a lot from their bench. Just because those guys played well enough and they weren't just sitting back there chucking up threes all game like you've seen a lot of teams. Do you make a great point. Right middleton twenty six points holiday over his point total at twenty five brook lopez leading it. Thirty three and bobby poor. Listen when you've got. Bobby portis sapping. You gotta feel pretty good twenty two though he took twenty shots twice. While if i'm betting and i'm like well which i ju- bet rj. I bet side. The bobby portis sharp twenty times. I'm like running running for the hills. Have no chance of winning. But the nice win now. Let's look quit. You know what we'll do in the last segment will look ahead at the saturday game..

"Game three of the west finals tonight clippers win this feeling pretty musty teams that go down. Oh in three are all in one hundred forty three in those series. Lipson down to twice already this postseason. Though in fact someone on today's show didn't believe they'd still be around. I don't see that person. In the plasma the mutes going to go to. Emily ramona on the clippers. Another comeback without quiet especially after that dramatic soul crushing dunk on your face finished a game. Two this is a team that just seems to be at their best when you believe in them. The least i mean this is i don't know what it is about. This clipper team they. They're they're really good as the underdog. There really good when you when you don't believe in them and so i. I've covered each of these three series. They're coming back home and over the two games they lost in the first round. They were terrible in those first two games and they were at home against utah. Not that close. These two games have phoenix. Were actually pretty close. And i know the sons are going to get a lift because chris paul's is planning to come back and play tonight. He's been cleared and health and safety protocols. So he's he's he's listed as available for tonight's game but i i like the clip tonight at home but they have. They've really found something with that. Paul george terrence man combination their remote. Or you live in la. I used to live in l. a. It's drama is what it is. They are just leaning into where they're from. It's all about the drama. I'm gonna leave you. Believe in the clips. Do you know what they haven't done in a series is dictated or set the tone. What they've been doing is reacting and all the players. It's fine because tyler was bill belichick. He makes so much adjustments. But there's something even bill belichick adjust to. This team is gassed. Paul george specifically is so over taxed with leonard out out of all the players remaining in the playoffs. No one is averaging more minutes per game than his forty and tie louisville admitted that he's fatigued. Maybe it's affecting his shot selection. Maybe this is just me editorializing. That's the reason they miss those two free throws so yeah. Of course they've come back from before but it's a lot more heart is a lot more difficult. When you're that tired k. I feel like you are the opposite of me. I keep saying. I'm not going to let the kipps clips burn me. I don't believe in them anymore. And you're somehow taking the exact opposite stance with the same logic. You're exactly right. I mean up. Until now. I really refuse to charlie brown and let the host of this show hostess. Show be lucy and the clippers. Be the football but this time. I'm running up full speed and i'm kicking. Why because they are getting back. Cpa three they had campaign in his stead. Go for twenty nine thousand nine. He's playing with a high degree of confidence. And this is a team that just swept aside another team so this is a different situation. That the clippers are running into this time and i don't think that they're going to be able to get out of this. Oh to matter what you say. I am always lucy and i do often charge for my advice at a stand. So just keep that in mind. Jackie mac are the clips out of this already. I'm just curious. Lucy used to be five cents. What is it. What are we got. Twenty five dollars a minute. Wow ooh right here. My concerns about the clippers number. One they got out scored sixty two thirty in the paint in that previous game. I do not know how that happened with campaign. Is your starting point guard instead of chris. Ball mr never have a turnover. Clippers only forced seven turnovers. And here's my third big issue. Marcus morris has barely played in the second half of the last two games. Why that matter for one. He brings incredible physically to this team and number two. He's the key to their when they go small for that small lineup which i think really benefits them against the phoenix suns. So i'm skeptical. Bill bell check or not Yeah.

"Years. Old somehow is trae young on his way to superstar. Status or ramona is already superstar. Oh i think he's there. I gotta be honest. Like he has everything you want in a star he's got personality swagger like he came into the league and we all wondered. Oh is it was that trade for luca doncic is going to be the right move there. He's in the conference finals. Luca was home in the first round. And i was so impressed with luca but men trae young is translating to winning right now. He's not empty stats. He is translating to win it be on his way or already. They're already there. he's been there. I bought his shoes back in further. Worry of twenty one all right because of what he was already doing. This guy is incredible. What you just saw him do last night has never been done by a player before in a conference in a conference finals. Put those kind of numbers. These electric watch. He's fearless on the road. He he enjoys it. He even said that he liked playing on the road in middle school because he liked the fans to get back in middle school. And you can see that. He carries his team on his back. He is the new steph curry. Put that one down in thirteen playoff games. He's already avenue more points and more assists thirty ten than did steph curry in his expert. What i'm looking for. Hey great nugget about trae young and middle school. Where'd you get that. do you know. Jackie maybe perhaps something. I wrote out drinks. I'm not sure i will say this. How do you stop trae young. You could shoot from the logo. He can drive to the basket. Hit that floor. And by the way while he's driving to the basket and you think he's gonna hit that floater instead. He's gonna throw up. The clint capella or whomever else. He realize dan. Ben simmons tried to stop him. All defense drew holiday. Tried to stop them last night. All defense but the thing. That impressed me most sarah and the reason i put him in the superstar category is now. He's making his teammates better. Because he's averaging over a ten ten assists a game in every time they win and that's to me puts him in that staff back u matic sounding like someone who wrote a story about him. I'm really last word to you. I'm one the professor. He's averaging more points per game than steph curry's eight points more per game those thirteen games. That's incredible the audacity of this kid to take those shots. The disrespectful alleyoop the shimmy he just does what superstars do he can take over a game. You see that would lebron. You see luca and now you see that with trae young so fun to watch. I am loving this playoff the young superstars. Let's go to the. We got.

"Ninety nine and a half wins. And then they take me out of the plasmas and put me on the said delaying the inevitable. Something of one hundred is smart. It's very smart. Let's do a show game one of the eastern conference finals last night. Hawks are down seven with four minutes to play but they were lurking. Maybe more accurately circling as hawks are want to do and they picked off there at the time. Seventeen to run to finish the game. Jackie what did you see last night and did this game one. Make you reconsider this series. Well sarah to make a reconsider the series. That would suggest that. I didn't think the atlanta hawks had a chance. And as you know. I've been driving this atlanta hawks bandwagon since all the way back to the first round series. So what did i see more fr. Trae young forty eight points eleven assists a guy that is completely dominating. The postseason right now. He is on that superstar level. You know players get there when others from. The opponents team are coming up and congratulate you on what you do. I'll tell you this to john. Collins has emerged. Now is one of the big keys for the atlanta hawks. Give a lot of attention to the shooter's two guys. Like bogey and danilo gallinari. But what john collins has done in this series just especially in this game one. It's going to give the bill wacky bucks a lot to think about for game two katie. How about you are you seeing things differently. Well i had to milwaukee bucks getting out of the east and get into the finals. And i still like that pick but the one thing i one thing about the bucks in this game was chris. Middleton who has been spectacular was a no show. He was zero for nine from the three point line. Even had that even had a last chance to win this game or tie it up and still. They only lost one sixteen to one thirteen now. Trae young spectacular. And i've been loving trae young since he's been in this league and i really liked his team from top to bottom. They're playing great. They play with no fear. Forty points on the road that's crazy. He's averaging more points i think on. Rodney is at home right now in these playoffs so this is going to be a series. I think this gonna come go down to seven games and we'll see if the if the bucks can make the adjustments. Guess we'll see that's the kind of analysis we're always looking for from experts. Only kaplan last night's game. I think the bucks are going to be okay. If they can hit a damn three they were seven. Twenty five from uncontested threes. That's not okay and has katie. Said chris middleton be as bad for every game in this series as he was last night. Walking have this game right. They had the home crowd. Seven point lead with four minutes remaining but then they let the hawks have five offensive rebounds down the stretch and that's what did it so it felt like they were kind of treating this field game and that's okay. As long as they learned their lessons and one of the biggest things they need to figure out what to do with brook lopez's because he was just getting burned by trae young. They had to bench him to go for a smaller lineup. But it really felt like they could have used him down the stretch when they were getting killed. Emily you're so right. Clean capellas rebounds. The extra chances for the hawks down the stretch absolutely killed him ramona wedgie. Well a brook lopez's on the court the fourth quarter for twelve seconds because he was a minus fourteen out there so they essentially just went to this to this small lineup with on at center because they had to take away trae. Young's mid range came. They actually did that. He was four for four from the mid range in the first half one for seven in the second half but if he's hitting threes than maybe just giving the mid range right if he keeps doing that so i. I've actually been one of those people. Who picked against the hawks first round pick against them in the second round. I stopped. i'm just. I'm picking the hawks like waits for coming to your senses or i can't give you minus one for continuing to pick a and you've come to your senses. Jackie got something else i do. So one of the things we keep talking about. All these wins at the hawks have well. the sixers. were in great shape. I mean they were up five minutes up seven with three minutes to go. Well the bucks were up seven with four months ago it ever occur to you guys that it's the reason the hawks keep winning right because they play from start to finish and the fourth quarter point differential under nate mcmillan is astounding plus one hundred sixteen and it was minus sixty five sarah before he got there. How about given these guys credit for closing out gain. You're right and that's why he's moral victory of the bucks keeping it tight at home in game. One when they're the favourite was Not great. let's move on some specifically forty eight eleven and seven last night. He is so cocky so ready for the big moment so.

"A turnover every now and then a nice throw in the back of the end zone and landry but then as they started winning old browns one again oda prowse one again oda browns pete kansas city. You you see baker mayfield. Your iso telling you. There's something different when in all honesty. It's the same thing all right. Well let's just straight talk straight talk wireless because it's not only baker who's gonna be looking for the contract and the quarterback from that draft class. What other players will be playing now. You say baker's not playing but how about this year in twenty twenty one this coming season what players are playing for contract. Who's playing for his money right now. Well let's stay with his team both guys. Ob j. n. Landry ob j comes back and becomes lbj with the blonde hair and kicking of the net. Which i love then. They've got to think about extending his contract and taking a look at his numbers because he will be heavily under pay compared to other receivers in the league his teammate jarvis. Landry is will what happens with that. Can we keep to receivers it. Twenty five million dollars question right a piece right. 'cause if ob j. gets twenty-five i'll take twenty three and then i'll get the other two from j. Somehow that's that's the way land she's gonna take about in ob j. vice versa. So that's an issue that they've got to figure out how to address in can because you play with the salary cap. He played with numbers. You could pay whoever you wanna pay. Then you think about it. Let's go to saquon barkley at the giants his his opportunity to come back off. Acl at the running. Back spot. the only guy that i can think of off the top of my head that had a career like say quantity beginning and then eventually got hurt. Was adrian peterson. But asia peterson came back in asia. Peterson look like adrian peterson. No problem even better. So he's playing for huge contract and is to not only that if he could help the giants get to the playoffs and help danny jones become the guy that they got when he drafted and he thought that that was guy. It helps his contract situation. Allen robinson from chicago bears is. He's on the franchise tag plan for seventeen million dollars which is below market value for player of his production. You look at what he's capable of doing. No matter who the quarterback he's been consists but how important he will he be especially if just feels as the one that takes over. He can also have more value based on the quarterback extremely important. So he's looking to have a big cash day. Then you think about the kyla. Murray arizona cardinals. What's going to happen. They're they're they're in a tough division. Okay there's a decision not only be made on a long term extension but also on the fifth year option pickup right. That'll need to be made. And if he goes out there and he leads the charge in cliff kingsbury in hold on his job because if they falter abc. Predictive kingsbury gets fired. And if that happens now all of a sudden column he doesn't have the guy that made an offense just for him just for him. It turns different now. Coach comes in and say well i. I don't really want this guy. I don't know if i can remember this guy. He takes him to the playoffs even a wild card berth. Just the last team barely slip in. That's that's more improvement and that's more than what the car does have had in recent years. Now we're talking long term extension. That would say a lot in that division for do that. They'll do that. Not division against those those teams. Especially those i miss it and i know i'm missing some guys robert woods out in. La believe he's up for contract extension and he's terrific in terms of everything that embodies a professional wide receiver people always say. Why are you always putting robert woods list. Because he's a pro man nothing to do with him being usc in la. He's a real pro. Like do do play in when you say. He's a review a real player. But that's what people should listen. If you say you get caught up in hype though. Oh he had one hundred and five catches thirteen. No no no no. I want him to be opposite of me. I wanna play with him. Yeah it's a real pro and that you saying that is highest compliment because you would know number one. Trust your eyes. So i i would definitely do that as something. That definitely a name. You keep on the straight talk brought to you by straight talk wireless no contract no compromise coming up every year. Eight teams are faced with the challenge. Going from worst to first so who is likely to make that leap this year. We'll discuss that after. He has this from hulu still wearing the clothes from last night. Not kidding smell still pounding on that remote control night after night. Hulu has all the shows and movies you love and before you ask..

"So much different at a startup. it was significantly less bureaucratic a lot. Less red tape and much more entertaining place to work for sure. We have these things called stock options. I don't actually know what they are. I don't really know how they were. How did you say your work ethic changed because you had stock options this idea that it doesn't meritocracy and you're performance and your connection to outcomes is the driver for whether or not this company actually works in the long term and you can feel it. There were times where it was like. We're gonna fail and it was a little adrenaline rush to see. Not only the mission outcomes which i cared about deeply and my background but also the business outcomes which i never been interested in before but suddenly felt really passionately about seeing through as of this year pollen tear went with evaluation of over twenty billion dollars since trae was one of the early employees. His equity value in the company would increase dramatically in the years leading up to the ipo. But at this moment of time in his career in twenty thirteen trae felt challenged by the workload his compensation and what was happening in his life. You and michelle. Had your first baby when you're at pailin tier. What was it like for you to think about your work. And how sustainable the eighty hours a week would be for your family when we had the baby and i realized that sleep was kinda hang asked wife and i had this simultaneous realization. That like man. If i'm going to be a good dad. If i'm gonna be around and be useful to her and this moment of deep ability like a new parent and i think i was just kinda like staring into the void thinking like can. I really do like another five year. It was like this feels like a good time to think about. What's now that was twenty thirteen. When you decided to quit from pelham tear maybe a little bit more complex than that and i think this is like one of these critical transition points. Yeah so let's talk about founders fund. Did your days actually get better in terms of your work life balance moving into this role deep learning curve at the beginning but minter capitals one of these industries that you could actually make the argument. That working. harder doesn't actually make you better at the drop. It's not as the input equals output type thing. And i wasn't starting my own fun. We're trying to make things work. I was joining one of the premier venture capital in the world. It was really just like how much soak up as a sign. Learn meet people that are so smart and interesting. One of the people trae would learn from was peter. Thiel peters known as one of the founders of paypal and the first outside investor of facebook is essentially a venture capitalist which pretty much means. He takes risk investments so that he can feel the growth of innovative companies and make lots of money later on and getting into this industry can be difficult so trey describes as another crazy god moment of career transition for him to jump from pollen tier two founders fund. I had known peter for a long time while i was at pailin tier and connected around the allah. Gm philosophy more than we did business in. i think it was march of two thousand thirteen. He kind of call me literally out of the blue and just asked if i was interested in coming to founders on. And i'm like what does that mean like. You're the chairman of the board of pailin jail. Is you tell me what to do or is this an offer. What exactly is going on to convince you can just asked me to start meeting with on the team. It was like a nine month interview process. It is incredibly difficult to hire people at the fund. It's because we have a very consensus driven hiring process. And so i had to meet with every single person on the investment team and basically answer whatever random crazy questions they had in. There were a lot of lows in the process for. I'd go month without hearing anything. And then there'd be like a flurry of activity and i buy out the san francisco and spend a day with everyone in so i didn't start at anderson until january twenty four th although trae seems like a good fit at founders fun he recalls. That was an easy start like the first week at founders on i would say it became abundantly clear to me that i had no idea what is doing and i remember sitting in all of these pitch meetings in south. We'd have debriefs after every pitch meeting where everyone that was in the meeting with. Stand around and talk about like you think it was good. It was bad. Like what are the good parts of the bad parts. How should we move forward or not move for with particular opportunity. I remember just like listening to everyone. Talk about it and be like. How do you make these decisions. I have no idea. I literally have no idea how we're supposed to be making these decision and at some point did you realize okay. You're going into a fund. You have to bring something that's going to make money and you have to bring some sort of insight. So was that the one thing that i felt like i knew reasonably well was defense. Technology and her son is a large investor and early investor and alan shearer and space that which is also very large portion of their revenue from the national security community. And so. I kind of told the partnership i'm gonna go and try to find the next founders as i put the next ten plus billion dollar company that is gonna have the majority of their work with town community. And so i had this like systematic. Way that i went through and like list of companies that were bidding on federal contracts. And then try to go and meet with as many of the founders of these companies. I could i mean a couple of all investments but nothing significant and then. I went back to the team. I said look like something needs to happen here. We are in bad shape right now as a country were still prioritizing technology development on twentieth century platforms like aircraft carriers and mannheimer planes. And you know we are a bunch of really sophisticated. Exquisite some in very small quantity we have like around dozen aircraft carriers and we're going to have hundreds of airplane like the future is going to be far more in order to compete with great power adversaries. We're likely going to need thousands and thousands and thousands of very low cost things that perform tournaments missions. Without putting human in harm's way is there anything about an aircraft carriers. It cost thirty. Million dollars has five thousand people on it and it can be destroyed with wonderful like it's just not strategically terrifying think about and so i went back to the partnership idea. I might. i don't know how we're gonna solve this There's really no one this working on the most important platforms the future and they challenged me to think about what it would look like to start. That andrew was accompanied. That trae stevens and palmer lucky started in twenty fourteen and this pairing of trae from the x. Intelligence defense tech space and of palmer with an ai and consumer technology background may have brought a compelling case to the us government or the idea. The company is that we didn't feel like the right approach was to ask the government to fund all of the research and development and then also find the purchasing the product and then also funds for maintenance of the product you look at the private sector. The way technology is built is the company takes on the risk of developing the thing and then if the customers don't want it than that's why it's called risk but if the customers do want it then they're able to monetize that get margins from selling that product and so we thought that that's probably the way that we should try to work in the defense space as well. Is that like to get order. That was just on a concept. We built the product and then they agreed to pilot the product then scaled over the course of the next two years really into action where they had hours that were deployed the end users that were interacting with the system. These transitions to production make take decades. So three years was kind of light speed in some ways. This business model. Andrew has grown tremendously in. Its first three years. And it's captured the attention and secured funding from several major investors including from founders fund. So as of today andrew has over three fifty employees and his worth almost two billion dollars. You're now say thirty seven. You have a company that's valued at one billion dollars. You made a lot of money at some point you as someone who had to borrow money from college work. Multiple jobs pay death. She that point when you're like whoa money's not an issue anymore. How did you process that as a person because so many people listening do care about making money and see money as a way to value their success at work. I don't think. How did i process. It is the right framing. I think it's how am i processing it. I think that this is always attention that were called into christians. One of my favorite stories in the bible is of the rich young ruler where he came to jesus and he said jesus great teacher. I've followed the laws. I followed the commandments. I've done almond said. I have been asked to do. And what else do i need to do in. Jesus didn't say you're a bad person. We actually said that's true. You actually are like a really news. That's when he got married to his college girlfriend michelle and decided to leave the government and work at this new startup called pailin tear today pollen tears worth more than forty five billion dollars but at that time trey was just one of its early employees while pailin tier was still focused and the defense technology space and big data. "That even more totally. This is a moment in history. This is the peak of biak timothy of the intelligence community really. The cia was actually owning operational outcomes in theatre which hasn't really happened at any point in american history up until then and so i think talking to him and seeing how thoughtful he was in the way that you think through critical problems in the world there are people out there who the job is literally to think in a complex way about these problems that are a lot more difficult on back then the media would probably have you believe so what happened made you realize he wanted focus on the middle east win. Look at the intelligence community prior to nine eleven largest representation of foreign language experience was russia. And that's because was remnants of the cold war people that were my age either. Were twenty two during the cold. War are now senior leadership in the intelligence community and the russian language. That's not the most helpful thing for the war on terror. The early two thousand. I remember like the the year before me at georgetown. There were like less than a dozen people in the eric forum. Undergrad and then my ear. There were like over fifty of us just as freshman and so there was obvious thursday of interest learning arabic diving into a middle eastern studies. More broadly by the time trey graduated in two thousand five. He landed his dream job working for the intelligence community. And the stuff got into kind of went like this the quickly. My role was around data. Promising and complex named matching so names in anglo culture are fairly simple middle. Eastern names are not that at all. They are far more complicated. You know the most common name in the arabic language is mohammed one in five basically. Hasn't the name muhammad somewhere in their name. There's not this like super plannable structure like getting middle. Sir there are these naming conventions in kunas descriptors so saddam hussein dean means saddam hussein decree. And then you have found bin. Ahmed bin muhammed muhammed. And that's how he got the name as a data centric organization. How do we resolve. And they're all this was kind of in the early years of the war on terror osama bin laden. There's literally hundred ways you could all that low. Sama l i d like there's just a million different permutations and asian. That was made that we were going to standardize with the acronym. Ub l. anytime you were referencing bin laden the and that is a hack that works for osama bin laden. Because he is the fbi's most wanted it doesn't work for everything. And there had to be more computational approaches solving the larger problem and that's the category that was while trey got to do some meaningful work and stuff he wanted to do after high school he also got a bit frustrated by the way things worked inside the government knew we grow up with james bond and the bourne identity at. It's just this industry that has been completely dramatized by the entertainment industry. And so there's some kind of crazy expectation that you walk in on day one and someone's going to thermonuclear the keystone after martin and you're gonna have a supercomputer and glass walls everywhere. And and what was the reality. Show up and you're like literally cubicle with no windows. You have to walk a mile from your car to get to the building and usually actually your cell phone in the car. You're completely isolated from the rest of humanity. Our time here there. And it's just like holy cow. This blows really depressing. I went through phases often down. Sometimes i feel like this mission is so important i feel like i'm doing something that matters. And then the next day per crazy bureaucratic thing would happen. You just be like so just a couple years into the job. Trae says he felt restricted at work. It would be the little things like not being allowed to use noise cancelling headphones without a waiver but there are also bigger issues like the resistance. He was met with when.

"Actually do this. Very trivial Modern which is already are already cheryl sensor along our house and then we leave it up to the long wars needs to use their story zillions alley right at iraq. We also result. It's entirely believe that having more is better or needing assistance so now you might wonder how trey got into the defense tech space. Since it's not one of the typical industries people talk about nor did he get exposed to it because he grew up around this line of work or had family connections in fact he grew up in rural ohio. Where i'm from in ohio. There's actually a book on hillbilly elegy by this guy named jd ban. That is like literally where i was raised. There were problems through where people to add to do. Economic challenges the opioid epidemic. Very real light. There were no real problem. I lived in a log cabin. And i'm in the middle of the woods. I never charms childhood and a lot of ways to get to our house. Your drive over a little creek down. A gravel road is pretty removed from the globalization and. My dad actually built a house with his bare hands. My biological father and my mom separated when i was at birth essentially. She was remarried to my dad. The guy that raised me. I had this incredible father in my life that decided to be my dad which was like a really cool guest and decided not to have any additional kids because he didn't want there to be complex or any tension than wanted my brother and i to be fully. Wow that last name. Stevens is that his. Yeah and and to be honest. It was so natural. There wasn't any tension. It wasn't like i was wondering too. I was thinking like that. It was like yeah. He was just always my dad. I was very lucky very blessed to have parents that love god. My grandfather was the pastor of our church rang up so there was never a question. Are we going to church. are we doing. The extracurriculars is involved with church. Goes if we're going to tamika. Grandpa will it's going be. So how would you describe yourself as a kid. Going to church. Definitely like kind of a teacher's pet personality impeding and like state bible drills finding passages very quickly and memorizing scripture and wanting to be the kid that raises his hand and answers the questions sundays at the art. It's like got her love. one of the threes. Throw it out there. Trae says he grew up in the southern baptist convention and was taught to withdraw himself from the ways of living in interacting with worldly things so as a kid he listened to christian music or clothing with christian messaging and participated in church activities almost religiously and his parents even a step further to get him and his brother exposed to national missions every year so starting from thirteen you went to another country during the summer. was it like mexico. At first we write in and our first international mission. The family was to the gaza strip during the second and it was not a gradual easing at all because at that time we knew what it was a nine hundred ninety eight. It was just a few years after it came under palestinian control. I don't know if you're aware of that. What was your understanding when you knew you were going to go at that time. It's kind of crazy because you fly across the world and you land in a place. That is completely different from where you were. But you step off the airplane and through the mcdonald's in the airport in tel aviv. And you're like oh maybe this isn't so different than you get in the car. You drive away from telling me even before you know it. You're like weaving through concrete barricades and there are people with automatic rifles and suddenly. You're like oh wait. I am not in rural ohio anymore. The tensions were were really high. I mean i. I don't think i'd ever lived or experienced this place that had going gunfire going off at night and the sound of rocket definitely a kid. I wouldn't call it traumatic because nothing super traumatic happen. I mean it definitely changed my perspective on my little isolated window of the world. What would you take away from that in. That experience grew very attached to the idea that i wanted to have international experiences. Be part of my professional life. At the time. I thought it was going to be. Journalism right always enjoyed reading and writing and so there was something to storytelling aspect of journalism. Where you go in and experience the raw culture and emotions and then unpack it. And and i think that just seemed like a really cool opportunity to meet a would've afforded me the ability to go and feed things outside of that comfortable bubble up in and in high school. Were you involved in high school journalism or anything like that. I would be editor in chief of my highschool newspaper and some often down with that experience of testing the limits of free speech. What did you do. Oh man there. Were so many things that i'm like almost embarrassed of now. Although here so deeply deeply about freedom of speech that i probably shouldn't be that embarrassed but every issue op ed that i called politics politics but when the chaos at the end so it was like a distraction for all the things that i thought were absurd. I remember writing an op-ed where i had surveyed hundred people at the school asked him. Are you a democrat or republican and then after follow up on specific beliefs and then the app. No one even knows what they are. They basically just whatever their parents are and then their beliefs are so divergent from that. It's obvious that no one has any idea what they're talking about a fair amount of time in the principal's office. I don't think. I appreciated that the time because i just thought that he had a very different perspective on the world. Then i didn't like looking back at it. It was evident to me that he was trying to teach me something about grace. It's just this idea. They'll just because you think something doesn't mean that it deserves airtime and sometimes you have to make decisions on wisdom non faith. Thanks so it's not just the wisdom of like what you say it's also the wisdom to know when not to say thanks. I think that that was really a question like yes. You are legally permitted to do this and the school is not going to suspend or expel you for doing something that third place in the lunchroom which literally happened in my case on at least two occasions but you also need to understand what responsibility is and you well a big stick and that really every student in this twelve hundred person high school is going to at least flip through and actually peruse this newspaper and that means that your decisions matter and you have to be smart. Wow so so. It's pretty crazy that you were the editor chief in your high school in journalism so everyone probably thought you are most likely to become a journalist after high school. So what happened. That changed this trajectory in your career singular moment. I was in a chemistry class. My senior year in the morning of september eleventh. Two thousand one a sound or someone running through the hall yelling out the teacher should turn on their. Tv's and the.

Steph curry James harden. Their certain guys who create a mismatch every time you guard him. Yeah. Pull a lot of people jumped off his bandwagon in November and December. Did you notice that? Yes, they did he finished with nine kids twenty years old man. He averaged nineteen points, eight assists, four rebounds, a steal their only thirty one minutes. A game too so and is shooting percentage, not great. But it got better every month, but he also had games of, I think seventeen sixteen sixteen fifteen fourteen assist in, and that's what you know, for a shooter to have those passing numbers. That's that's where you wanna play with somebody like that. Because the trae young, I saw it Oklahoma was different than it lenna because it felt like there was a little more of a pass first. Then what we sold Oklahoma. But he's still, you know, he led the nation scoring and. Assists at Oklahoma remarkable. Yeah. For fritzy. And he started enjoying the assists. More and more, I had read something where when he would set up an alley oop to one of his teammates, he would jump up in the air as his teammates jumping up in the air at the Dunkin' just to feel like a part of it, it wasn't all about how many points it can school. Yeah. And his dad did a wonderful thing, though. You know you helped him out through his entire career and. So interesting. Interesting. Interesting kid, I, we'll take a break here. We'll come back, we got our play the day, and I think we got our poll question, a stat of the day as well back after this, in the Dan Patrick show, every car comes with its share stories, right, that ding.

Well, because I was very surprised that trae young was on this list was made a month and a half ago and in the last, and that's what happened last forty five days on trae young in the last fifteen games twenty games has been ridiculous. And he's a rookie. And he's learning and he's getting better month after month after month in every single statistical catego-, he's been fantastic linka pillow. Bye bye. So of the four matchups in best for last here is what I think is the fourth best Super Bowl to promote. This February the quarterback who set nearly every statistical record squares off against the fee nom. Who's on piece to shatter all those records chiefs Super Bowl fifty three.
