Trader Joes Napa Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 Review

"And cheap wine fighter.com coming again with a kind of a fun one. Well, at least it was fun like adults playing until off the fires and Napa Valley half and all the tragedy and people lost their lives and grape Vineyards that have burned and raped Wineries and people lost their life's work off. But rather to be a downer when I dressed wine, this one is called the Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve Cabernet, Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley 2018 lot 97 There have been a couple of bumper crops in Napa Valley Sonoma that area so there was Surplus and then the covid-19 off but these are wines and so to restaurants and for parties and none of that's going on right now. So there was a trip plus and there was going to be a great many wines that were going to be a prices. They usually never AR CNET and Trader Joe's was starting to show this was a velour the Palm Spring Mountain at Atlas Peak and there might be another one all Napa some Indian from a high-end subdivision small places. I think the Oak Grove that's where Screaming Eagle is front Screaming Eagles when it was 100 Point perfect lines themselves in the thousands of dollars and I figured out I'm going to have a 1490. I have one that off. Ghost videos of Vineyard within two miles of that place or or something like that. I don't know where the vineyard is. They don't tell you that when you're paying $49 for high-end. Well, I'll tell you about you all the details, you know with Cooperage what force the old came from who's arrived start with winemaker the history of the winery all and for the price of these things and when you don't offer you get cheaper, so I don't know if there's still going to be a a glut is just the last gasps Trader Joe's were you want to run out and find these small production wines? I think there was a little bit less than five thousand cases. There's twelve thousand twelve bottles off the case for each of these but which you know is a lot of wine, especially when it's a nationwide distribution. So, you know on a Thursday Supposed to go to continue there's resorting lions and in the works that are coming our way out of cheap price, but you know a lot of that, you know a big deal any more with the fires are happening there and you'll see the devastation and I know you know people lost their lives people of lost history things. They worked on forever. You know, I just saw a man who had 100,000 bottles in one of his buildings in the building burned burned out. It's just, you know, it's crazy drink to him. I'm going to do that. So I don't know if this is gonna be the last of the cheap wines from Napa Valley. They're coming up or what? But they're good the 1499. There's over those got a nose that is worth you just smelling it all the different Roma's going on in there is worth forty nine thousand. I mean you don't get that and just regular then there is a reason why these Appalachians are famous and this is a 2018. It's not a young age worthy. Why that's drink it now. Maybe you could put it away for a couple of years if you want to you know, but it doesn't need to you can drink it right now, but it tastes great. It's got a lot of flavor. It's got its Sleek doesn't have a lot of Weights medium weight on the palate. It's liquid has a ton of flavor. It's you know, it's just kind of flows money's nice deal II 1499. It kicks butt Trader Joe's says that it's if it were a retail branded. Did you have an air brand on it? What's so for about $30 and $30 Napa cabs are starting to really ride, you know that when it starts getting more expensive a lot of that is because of its more often. It's it's rarer line mean, there's not enough to go around you gotta pay to get them but you really hitting some really good wines when you get dirty on the upper end or you can go higher the 13 get you some good one. And and this

Trader Joes Reserve Carneros Chardonnay 2019 Review

"Then from cheap wine finder.com with a wine review today from Trader Joe's they actually have some interesting wines right now. There is a deadline blood or they were supposed to be a wine glass. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley and covid-19 is kind of shut down restaurants sales and you know, there's the fires out there are doing anybody any favors right now, but that's where we're at. And so they're starting to see and Trader Joe's has a bunch of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This isn't one of them. This is let me grab the bottle so I get it right. It's the Trader Joe's Reserve Chardonnay canero. Snap Valley 2019 lot 204. Keep in mind the 204 cuz there's also a 205 lot 2:05 and I believe that is a different producer Jim. All together. These are small production lines from a high-end growing area. This is a crime chardonnay pinot noir grow name is Richard name the 2019. So too young why not drink and now one but that's fine. Drinking now lines are usually made simply let those grapes shine through, you know, you're you know in not a lot of age and not a lot of this has some but not a lot and it just lets the grapes be nice and juicy and bright and when you have upscale groin area with expensive types with high-end Vineyards will have a young lion that what's the grapes shine through was a very very nice thing. Canaris is half and Sonoma happened. Napa Valley funny thing I'm going to label if it's in the Napa Valley where The Vineyards are that will be on the label. If it's on the snow my side to the second Narrows, you know, I guess that's being Snappy or something to take a sip. It's pretty good stuff. Nick an arrow Southern border even though it's Inland is the San Pablo Bay which is the northern part of the San Francisco Bay which has brings very cold cold pack Waters all the way Inland and you get the breeze as you get your basically on the coast, even though you're Inland and so it's kind of a freak of nature in the truest sense that it makes good wine that The back label said it was made by a good Winery and I couldn't really find an avid Winery but there isn't in the same town. They're from there's an avid Vineyards. Who do I end up, you know the wire in the exact same city, so it might be a part of that and they're high-end producer and I kind of think this wine is from a high-end booster. They bought the grace we can narrow so they made it wherever in Sonoma Coast region because the bottles a heavy bottle when you get these $10.99 off but usually a lightweight Echo bottle so it's less glass and cheaper to transport since it's a lighter weight wage actually has a real Court which you know for it's a line and should have I keep my quirks, but I have a whole bunch of them and it's so rare. It's always these kompas. Some of these plastic things or I don't know that's why I'm you know, you know, you should put screw Tops on if you're going to use these crappy things just put screw times, but this one actually has a very decent quarterback, but young wine one you wouldn't age so sign up like thick cork but it's way better than ninety-nine ninety-nine and Trader Joe's chardonnays normally have so it's need to be ironed grapes from a producer isn't really always that into making value-priced wines. It seems they don't tell you much about these things. You have to guess on what you get off, but that's what I'm guessing. It's from caneros. It tastes really good. It's a young one. Like I said the Young Lions are style. That's another thing and canaris. They don't make you online. This is Page nineteen if they just went in 2018 and made the line little more complicated a little bit longer and Barrel they can sell it for twenty twenty five dollars. You know, why solo / 999 that's one of the things at Trader Joe's Is actually kind of cool for Trader Joe's will give you a drink at now young wine with really upscale grapes. You don't really get that everywhere and that's kind of one of those when they really good things about about you know, people say, oh it's cheap wine iron. You got it all wrong you getting these unique wines up. You can't always get everywhere. So yeah keep that in mind if you if you off at the 205 lot 205 is in your store will like this isn't going to tell you everything this is for the lot 204 but it's really good. If you're into Chardon eight by it off. It's it's plenty good. It's some it's a taste of Carneros grapes that you're not going to get at this price bed. So there you go. So keep it cheap. Children out

La Burgondie Brut Ros

"David Fromm. Cheap. Line. FINDER DOT COM. Coming at you with another wine review, we put on the cheap one finder dot website. And today it's a trader Joe's wine which to a lot of. It's the love burgundies. TREMONT DEBRAH goal. OC. Brute rose, Zach. Nine, hundred, nine. Import Bubbly. That's actually really really good. And It's a criminal chroma. is a sparkling wine from France. Isn't. From. Champagne. Champagne can be a grandma just means sparkling wine basically. But there brandon Sir you don't think of them as chromite you think of them as champagne. So everything else is a criminal and this is from Burgundy. And if you're not really up on. That part of the country. or The world I guess. The bottom part of Burgundy's this is of in northern eastern France. Is bourgeois. And the northern part is champagne and middle is the Burgundy region. and. It's home of some of the best new iron. Chardonnay in the world I mean it just that's that's ground zero for Pinot Noir Chardonnay. And they make. Like champagne does just a little bit to the north. They make bubbly to and a half may bubbly for a long long time. And this love ninety nine bubbly is made by. A group of farmers and four hundred, fifty different farmers in the region off with their grapes together and they make three and a half million bottles year. If, you want the name, it's on the. Website www cheap wine fighter dot com. It's French. Damn. I can't remember American names remember French names. But they're legit. You don't know who these who makes the winds were trader Joe's. But they're actually good in it at love. Ninety nine. This is good. Trader Joe's is a lot of buying power ninety nine. It is typically a lot less than what A. parable wine and a retail shop with being. One of the reasons is that all the in Europe are trader Joe's in. Europe is all ignored there's all ignored all these stuff. The all the United States is all these south and. Trader Joe's Aldi north, but they have a worldwide reach it almost wine shops are in a city or maybe a stay. Supermarkets can go. A long way they can be many states but they don't normally. Push. Their own brand of line. They don't really have that going for the most part like trader. Joe's does with are known for their wines and they're known for their value price twice. So this eleven ninety, nine criminal from Burgundy. And it's made in the same way. Champagne is. Made. With Pinot noir grapes. Champagne either either and or. Chardonnay. Pinot Noir Pinot Monet. Grapes are. Similar If anything the Pinot Noir. Grapes. In. Burgundy are better regarded than the ones up north. So. This love and ninety nine grandma. Mike be seriously underpriced. Mean when people pay big money for French. Champagne. Do you know? Everybody. Else's you know trying to get with. What's leftover because if you're going to spend thirty Bucks Forty Bucks Fifty Bucks One, hundred, twenty bucks you're buying champagne. If you only have ten twenty, you might look at a criminal. So that's what you know. But that doesn't mean it's the quality is not there. It's not equally good if not exactly the same because it doesn't exactly the same. But this is good Melissa delicate, it's balanced. It's got. Very controlled flavors. This is a one everything is where it's hopes to be. You know it's Often cheap bubbles are fun and delicious. Raw Love the place and they're. The last drink this one is kind of sophisticated and refined to I'm thinking because I got a glass of bubbles man.

Trader Joe's Fall Products to (Pumpkin) Spice Up Your Shopping List

"Welcome to another of our short shopping list episodes. I'm Tara Miller director of words and phrases and clauses, and I'm Matt Sloan, the marketing product guy now just about everyone in every type of business has had to make adjustments during this pandemic but we're proud the trader Joe's has maintained a commitment to developing new products to giving you that sense of discovery on every visit. So, let the discoveries begin. All right hold on I'm just organizing. I don't even know where to start there. So many new products. What's purple on the outside creamy white on the inside and makes a Great Ship Donny Osmond socks no. Almost Masaaki sweet potatoes. They're not the normal sweet potato. They're not the bright orange sweet potato, their paler in color and flavor. Wise. I'm going to say that they're kind of like a roasted chestnut in obnoxious kind of way. But in a nice way like insists nutty sweetness these are great chips but wait met we sell. Masaaki. Potatoes in our protection when we can get them. These are delicious sweet potatoes people love them. They're great for you. You meant the sweet potatoes themselves. You mean in chip form that these should be considered some kind of health. Okay. These are potato chips, full disclosure, right So they come with all the caveats that regular chips do sweet potatoes themselves really good for you. I will stand by them. Those are probably in the store. Already I think those are coming in at the beginning of September or something like that, and they are limited because there's a limited number of these potatoes that can be made into chips. People associate trader Joe's with Pumpkins stuff in the fall. How about Pumpkin Spice Pretzel Slim's I mean this is a candy. Yes Pretzel but it's a pretzel that is swimming in really nice white chocolate with crushed pumpkin spiced pumpkin seeds and I think we're trying to figure out another way to Pumpkin on their one more time. These are just great. So if you like the peppermint. Pretzel Slim's. I think you'd be a fan of these to these are really tasty sweet with just a little salty. So you just WANNA keep coming back for more. Another thing. That is sweet. But I think not too sweet are the pumpkin spice batons that are coming in and those are kind of a very close relative to the cocoa batons that we have every day and the vanilla batons we have the villa batons. Do, and we've had coffee batons we lemon for awhile it's a wafer cookie with pumpkin spice filling inside I mean it's kind of simple and straightforward, but it's a you know kind of thing you could have with a cup of coffee or even some ice cream though should be in stores by the time. This podcast lands and folks should be able to grab those right away. They're just delicious when we're thinking about. What else to include as a Pumpkin version we often look to really popular products Brioche we sell an inordinate amount of that classic agee, Sweet french-style Bread. We have a Pumpkin Brioche coming I'm excited for this. I think French toast will never be the same. That was also super limited by the right like it's it's in and we'll have it for a little while, but it's not something that's going to be around for. You know months and months and months. That's our hope for infant works or it'll be a great. Saint. Patrick's Day breakfast and by that time it'll be green. So perfect. One of the things that was a big sort of revelation to me this year even though it's not something we invented it's not something we were the first to think of is the spicy pumpkin curry simmer sauce that's coming in. It's kind of inspired more by a Thai curry than Indian curry but it has all of those really classic curry flavors. With the addition of actual Pumpkin and it's like thick and it's creamy and it's got a really good kick to it. I'M GONNA. Say This is good. Right out of the jar actually with Yeah Yeah I can't wait to hear about how people put this to use. We are working on a recipe right now internally for a Vegetarian Spicy Pumpkin Curry potpie that we're hoping to have on our website and in the fearless flyer in late. September. Also, I think slated to be featured in an upcoming flyer many spicy Pumkin Samosas the. Sabih in the frozen section, this is not a Pumpkin pie situation at all. This is an appetizer wonderful bridge creamy spiced pumpkin filling. This does sort of flavor. Wise. Go more toward the Indian style curry Classic Somoza Spices are used this. These are delicious. They're really good with a number of different kinds of sauces has been a we've tried them with a Chutney but also with our sweet chili sauce, which takes its inspiration from Thai cuisine and the hot and sweet pepper Jelly these tastes really good dipped in any of those. I'm still focused and obsessed with Pumpkin Pumpkin Nada. Now, this is a Pumpkin pie situation. So think of a small Mexican inspired hand pie with delicious spiced kind of a classic spice, Pumpkin Pie Spice filling. So. Good. So not like spicy spice but like sweet savory spice, the spices more like our spiced apple cider or a traditional Pumpkin pie spice sat up I mean this would be great for breakfast I. Think because I like to have pie for breakfast you know pine a cup of coffee is a great way to start the day, and this is like a little pie. So it's like I'm just having a little Lil Pie wilpon. That's your new nickname. Okay.

30 Miles Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

"I. It's. From she wind binder DOT com. We have another wine review. This one's little different in kind of the same same time. It's from all. Three dollars and seventy five cents is fourteen, ninety nine. It's a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. THIRTY MILES NAPA Cabernet Sauvignon twenty-seven teen. Shot. I don't know about fifteen dollars for an all. Usually for a storebrand, they have some advantages in pricing. So a seven, nine nine. storebrand trader Joe's. Grocery store. No matter. Is probably equivalent to attend a twelve dollar one. And a regular basis just because there's no, there's no marketing there's no advertising. You know there's a lot less distribution costs. There's just those costs and the difference between a legitimate. Eight dollar wine and. Then twelve dollar one is usually significant. There's usually more. Wine production techniques taking place. You know the really inexpensive wines, they very simple productions it styles dot good and bad. But you like a little bit more involved production techniques, slow up extra money there for that, and you can get that at a lower price with storebrand. But a fifteen dollar naphtha cab. I expect a fifteen dollar. Any fifteen dollars ready to be pretty good. And the difference too in a fifty dollars to Cabraha. Twenty. Isn't all that much it's usually marketing. It's usually. More well-known winery. You know. Better better av a little higher status in a it's usually. This wine that much better. Sometimes, it's that much better but the fact. that. So little has it here to buy a fourteen, ninety nine. All, these Cabernet Sauvignon. Because what was actually? kind of bargain is, is it a Barton? Actually. It's a good wine I've been drinking. But the economics are cheap wine change go to fifteen bucks but here's the one thing the solar for me. All these nine, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety, nine, champagne last year was one of the best wines I hadn't twenty nineteen and every sparkling wine had Susan I've got an answer to that and it's I haven't had a lot of. The website I love it bad some wines but none of them came close to that so far. So taking a chance on all be one. Hasn't been that much of a chance and this is really good. It's. Intense. It's got good flavor. Well, balanced nice wine. If you just want WanNa fifteen dollar one that I don't know it's actually a twenty one or twenty, three dollar one only perfect fifteen. All these polls, the trademark took their their brand names. You can tell trader Joe's wine to make support them which helps a little bit by going on the National Trade trademark registry. Will come. Lose the gadoe trademarks. You'll how if a whole nother story? But you gotTa know what direction that one came from. With all the owning the trademark. You don't nothing. But that means they also can. If the economics of the original deal change, they can go out and. Get a new producer. Whatever happens there they can still change. Even though I think was released twenty nineteen. Sit around while my all didn't have until recently. It's been around. There is there is A. Cabernet Sauvignon Glut Napa and Sonoma. Stuff. They had bumper crops for couple years in a row. And then Calvin nineteen pretty much shut down all the restaurants which are exactly where they were selling a great deal I. N. Cabernet, Sauvignon. And then big to do gatherings shutdown. People who are buying wine are not having people over that they don't know where they've been. So there's A. Glut been exasperated by what's going on. You'RE GONNA start seeing Cabernet Sauvignon. Selling. Cheap cheap earth GonNa see brand you've never heard before. And then they'll go away in two years come out because they can't just hold off the stuff backing here you're stacking up next year is release.

Deep Valley Red Blend 2018

"Day. From. Sheep flying, find it Ascom again. Today we have. Five ninety nine red blend from trader Joe's The teat. Surround Low Sarah. It goes by the name of. Deep Valley Red Wine Blend Mendocino twenty eight teams. Normally Five ninety nine red wine kinda scares me a little bit because. You expect a few things out of red wine some oak aging some. Just some general aging. There is no budget applied ninety wine and a white wine. A little bit different like a Soviet block, a young savvy blockers young. They just make it. Right -Chusetts fresh. Lines good there. It doesn't that doesn't need to cost a lot of money. Learn, you need to do a little bit too and so it's always a little bit scary but I think they spied it's actually a food. Wise. I think it does better. With burgers or like a steak burrito does. On its own and I'm fine with it not the most malicious wine ever taste taste fine. But it's you know it's pretty pretty good. It's made by one of the oldest wineries in Mendocino. If you ever want to know who makes these winds for trader Joe's or any other Any other store where they don't really tell you what's what? Trademark. Registry. Website you get in there within our. Trademark lackadaisical it has come up. But. That doesn't mean that's a one that winery comes up would ever make on their own these custom crush people trader Joe's goes down and says, I want a wine like this at this price. They think, yeah. Okay. We can do that but it might not be a wine that they would ever do on their own. So don't read too much into who makes other than if they make good quality wine. They're probably not skipping on the quality that. They held back. And that's that and this is. It's a good ninety, nine Tuesday night. Pizza, burgers. Fine for them is this really well. You Know Harry. You go in and out Burger, we don't have it ended up Burger Chicago. It picked this would go great with that. There's another thing another observation about trader Joe's wines, and here's a five, ninety, nine wine from a single Aba. Under ten dollars. Californian the label which means that the grapes come from all over. It comes from the North Coast Central. Coast Central Valley. and. That's usually because to make wine cheap you gotta have. A lot of it. You gotTa make. Five hundred thousand bottles. And these big wine corporations do that they'll have holdings everywhere and you know they own vineyards contractors everywhere. So to make the most of their money and utilize scrapes pick from all over but trader, Joe's isn't like. They, go to a single ABA. And you don't know out of this is a single vineyard wine but not that, and there are a lot of vineyards in. In the Mendocino but. You know usually when these cheaper the winds are the simpler things is way to happens. You know they're not be off. You've got to bring in grapes from twenty seven different. Vineyards that might happen but you gotta figure cheaper just to grab one or two. So. To storebrand. You get a much more exclusive line for cheaper price than you do in a retail line. But you don't really know what you're getting basically. You're taking a chance but you get these single ABA wines and he don't know who's making what where, when all the time. But. If you go the trademark website, find out who's doing at Subic meals. Usually go because a lot of times these people. Make. These winds for trader. Joe's whatever their own brand self, their thirty five forty dollars. Make wines I mean it's. Just happen to have some extra great somewhere getting their hands on something. And you know trader Joe's better for. So. There you go. You got the deep sally you red wine blend from. Five, ninety, nine crazy price. There is some. You know it's It's a twenty eight. So it's fairly young for Redwan. Super Young read one.

"Today we are jumping in there's another episode that is a hall episode. So today's the Aldy Hall. GonNa make the joke, the hall yeah. I know I always make the joke it's I. Think I'm over the joke. Brought it back. I love all the all the is actually a new discovery for me, and now I describe it as like a less expensive trader Joe's. Isn't that kind of what it's like pretty much which is crazy because trader Joe's is already inexpensive. Like yeah. It's like the dollar store trader joes well, I. Mean the last time I said it was like smartandfinal meets the dollar store and some people got upset about that comparison. But like I love the dollar store and by the way, people need to know that the food that you get at the dollar store is not older expired in some cases it's a lot of big brands that are specifically making foods for the dollar store. So I don't know that but I a big fan of the dollar store. So I take that as a compliment if somebody would say that anyway, that's just me. But today we are going through a whole bunch of products I went to all the last week. I purchased don't know like nine hundred item. So. A lot of the stuff that I bought were holding off in a few more weeks. We'll do it all the hall I'm GonNa. Go back to all the fill it out. But I, I mean I literally got like fifteen things and we're going to try one, seven, eight, eight of them today. It's going to be tough for me to not eat that one thing that's in the bag that we're gonNA wait on because it just I can I look at it every day and I wanna eat it I'm guessing it's peanut butter flavored Jamie please hide this from him. It'd be having other PB item today. It's a little bit of a weird. I am I'm actually really excited with that one. So I'm excited about everything today zero. All right. So before we jump in and start eating everything in sight Mike, what you got. Are you ready for your new favourite fall drink? Viva Seltzer has just come out with a new flavor. Do you WANNA guess. So it's fall themed. So the is it the I think it's V. visit. Oh, it's. I don't know. Could. Use this Jamie what does it looks like the va I don't know. Whatever you want to her five. The new flavor is pumpkin spice. So it's a hard seltzer pumpkin spice flavors. It looks like right now it's only being sold at Kroger Stores and Kentucky Tennessee and Ohio. But I'm sure we'll go nationwide wouldn't go nationwide. By, the way I don't know if you know this but the vive or. Whatever it's called their heart seltzer drinks or one hundred calories and two grams of carbs. Yeah. That's not bad except the only bad part of that is hard. Seltzer Gross. That's my. I don't I am not a fan and the the idea of like a pumpkin spice flavor that sounds terrible to me. Might be harsh right now no I feel like the only excuse for a pumpkin spice flavored cocktail as if it's like a frozen sweet. Type of like creating. Yes. Creamy. So the article that I that I read this from, they got a taste of it and they said it's amazing like it's and they thought the same thing like it would be terrible and they loved it so. I will give it a try I'm GONNA give it the benefit of. And a our little community of Woodland Hills is in the news like big time in the news Amazon fresh. The one that we have that we've been getting our deliveries from there finally, opening it up to walk in customers. It's the first in the country like no other Amazon, fresh stores allowing customers walk inside except for ours right now. And it's by appointment only I guess you have to go on and make an appointment. And, the store does have cashiers but they they encourage you to use their dash cart our showing Jamie this the other day. So it's a cart with a screen on it and every time you pick up an item, you scan the item on the car and then charges you on your Amazon Account. So I'm imagining it to punch in your code or something when you get get the cart. And I'm not, GonNa go to any stores as of it on my comfortable yet. But I don't know might be something you might WanNa check out judgy when you say You might want to go into a store. That sounds cool. I. The thing I know about Amazon fresh is that whenever I order anything, there's like for every item, there's like eighty eight pieces of packaging. It's like they wrap everything in plastic and in cooler bag, and then in a brown bag and then box. But maybe if you go to the store, you won't get all the packaging but I'm excited actually so I will check it out

And it says. Skin care product and I was like Oh my God what and so it was five letters and so I just wrote in serum but then it turns out that was wrong. It was not serum but it was one of my other favorite products toner I know. I was GONNA say spoiler but I know sorry too late every it hustle away I mean whatever I also was like, ooh, maybe it's serum. But Alas. I mean, I even was self absorbed enough to think maybe the person who wrote this listens to the podcast and this is like a super secret Easter Egg. Listen, I had like the you are a writer. New York Times crosswords. Send us a smoke signal in across shorts will shortz if you're out there hydrating. Face. Hit US. Doesn't do all the players Mahjong themed crossword not too long ago. A really yeah. Did you feel like that was assigned to you the yes? Definitely. was made for me. I'm gene okay. I survived or my family made it through the first day of one hundred percent distance learning at home. You know shoutout teachers shut up parents and Guardians shutout school administrators everyone who works at schools I mean just shout out to everybody. But so great. Because We did it and They had a really good day. And I mentioning it because I went to trader Joe's for the first time in approximately six months Ah-ha. I hadn't been to TJ's like TJ's near me. All the teachers are tiny, but a new one opened up. Who never experienced new TJ's before. But I was like I'm doing it. I'm going to trader Joe's. I use the excuse that we needed frozen being Tuxedos and then I got there and I was like well, I'll load up my cart with like eight thousand bags of truffle flavor things. But it was. So it felt so good to be back in a trader Joe's I. Don't know how why to explain I I don't know how to explain why like the experience of a specific grocery store feels. Like being with an old lover or something. Do. You know what I mean. I was like Oh right My main goes strips are like, yes the frozen lot. Just. All, the TJ's and the things that we love in my house I stocked up on. So many snacks because story now everyone in my home like. We're all there and we're all kind of like in work mode like you know summer is over and we must provide. School lunch for her children during the day and I don't know why it feels different from lunch any other time but it just does yeah I hear that. I stocked up on. FROZEN SOUP dumplings, they'll eat those sound good. I. Mean I just was like, what can I serve these creatures for lunch. I made a little favor them today with. Charmed, charmed by and then I heard my lake second grader telling her teacher on zoom about it like we had a buffet for lunch which was really like I took out snap peas put them in a bowl I opened Hamas I caught up some pita bread. But it felt like a win and I'll take any win. I can get right now Louis. So that's what I'm to I literally eight. So many TJ snacks today just for the pure pleasure I'm jealous. A-. Have truffle potato chips that were so good. I, had never seen them before. I had a Pasadena Salad from them. I mean I just Tj it hard all day just like strictly trader Joe's and so into this for you. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. I'm into it too and I also want to note that they have like new hand soap trader Joe's. we've never talked about really about a hand soap on this podcast and I feel like it is something I could I like kind of I don't WanNa say horrid I don't like misuse that term but I stock up on a lot of hand soap. But I'm a sucker for a sleek bottle and certain smells and I. Do feel like hand soap is an item where like I splurged on a fancy hand soap and I'm wondering is that a thing is that a scam like fancy hand soap the same as just like a regular trader Joe's Hanso with just a fancy name. Sores there's something special about a fancy hand well, okay. I think the answer is yes and no. So. So it's like a scam one can get behind. Yes. So like I love the smell of a sob hand soap, it is right ridiculously expensive like it's obscenely expensive I did splurge on it once and I was really happy. And then I just kind of stopped buying it because I was like. This is sort of ridiculous like I was kind of embarrassed even though I did really enjoy it but I think. It for me it has to be like, okay, this is like the thing I'm splurging on right now you know what I mean if you have one thing that you splurge on, maybe it's a night cream maybe it's a Sierra maybe it's hand soap. Maybe you don't spend on anything but like if you splurge on something. That that would be my thing for the month or something

"Stay from cheap wine fighter dot com an edge again. Wine we got from trader Joe's trader Joe's. Since the Kobe thing has been kind of light on new wines, they came out with a few new ones and we have a new one today. And, it is the trader Joe's petite. Reserve Russian River valley saw vm blocked twenty-ninth teen. Always. Think it's seven, ninety, nine, hundred block and I was you know when you get one from fancy growing area like the Russian river, which is Costa Sonoma. The always think. It's maybe some fancy winery, the head, some leftover twenty, dollar wine, and. You. Know Trader Joe's got a deal on a small amount of it and L. Not for seven ninety nine not this time that does happen from time to time. But this is from Owl Ridge. Wine Services, which has been a company. Out of Russian river since two, thousand, four, they they're accustomed crush private label. You know if you want to start your own wine label, you go to them and you know you tell them what you want. They'll make it for you and label it and you can. You can make your own company and sell it to stores. Are you. If you're a trader, Joe's though, make you wanting to. And this is from the Russian river and they've been at it since two thousand four, which gives them years of having. Contacts with the local vineyards and wineries. So they have good resources. Trader Joe's as you know. Price Advantages Basically they don't advertise they don't have to. have. A distributors go store to store trying to sell their wind getting the shelves. Everything's done a front. I think they pay for it upfront to I'm not always sure about every single deal. But I do know that that is what happens with these wines. Once they contract for it and they pay for an upfront, it's there's to sell or not sell. So that's what we have going here, and this is blocked from the Russian river valley. I think I've had many of those Russian river is a wonderful place for one. There's some high end wineries in there. But I normally get the Pinot Noir Chardonnay that's that's what they're most well known for though I know there are some wonderful producers making. I like my soviet-bloc young without a lot of aging bottle not a lot of production techniques. Crush the grapes do what you gotta do bottle maybe eight just a little bit. Designing human-like voice bots for IVR with Einav Itamar

"For those who? have. Never. Come across Volk. It is is A. Platform describe as a platform technology enables you to. Automate in coming calls into the in the Houston. conversationally, I. You describe. It. Wa. You're automating. Both incoming and outbound calls using the I. We also providing solutions for Omni Channel. On top of feats, you know many auto companies. The are Chad with companies are trying to into the space of voice. But then the extent that you get these, you know naturally suitable because voice is much more complex than I'm your shed, but we went the other way around I created. A solution that is good for contact center. Now, we're also studying to provide the solution channels and to provide also on me across channels solutions. Across. Messaging Chats websites in-app in many other channels, swell. Rhonda's this because eventually customers today expect to get the best service across the channels to get it also to be consistent and fluent. so you're talking. On about trade-offs, contacts and trade offs, and how you kind of you develop the plow foam to try and counteract some of the. Can you elaborate a little bit on what kind of trade offs? You UTAH. Yeah, sure. So S I mentioned. I. Think Sense. There is such thing as customer service. There is always a trade off between. You know. The company's you know our clients at one to provide. Good. Customer experience, but Dan their cost. For providing customer experience and especially. When there is a your scaly. So as no telecommunication companies and banks as A. Growth in a number of customers, a number of agents, it becomes more and more challenging to keep the level of customer experiences still keep the cost same. Venture. Customers what we experienced when we are calling. Is. Experienced long waiting times. We experienced sometimes inexperienced agents or you know all short agents, we know maybe limited access to internal systems or. Out Maybe. So So. Then on the other hand when companies try to solve skill ability issues and use technologies like. Then again, they get. They throw their customers into amaze rights with the that is not great. Awesome experience, and then sometimes they try to. Come these using. Trying to divert customers the other channels that they're more scalable like email and chat, and so on. That eventually, still customers are still calling and again receipts during co-lead more and more again because if you want something and you now. You still need to call. So it's not one or the other, he needed to provide great customer experience across channels and I think that if chat was where like a trim two or three years ago. Now, it's clear that the voice is as important as jet and you need to provide again a solution across channels and. Make sure that you don't need voice s like. Sumptuous is. Completed to. Jets. It's interesting that you mentioned or what you mentioned earlier makes me think about how a lot of times customer service can actually be a differentiator. Sorts can be a competitive advantage for starting companies. In. The US you've got a handful of companies that are just like really known for good customer service like jet blue, a trader Joe's. Maybe, there is something that you as well. Cain any companies that Spring to mind. You're like, okay. I. Don't mind calling them. I think John Lewis Typically tend to have a pretty good customer service, but another one from the US is Tom's shoes. Of you've had this dog is where some very agents have spent like twenty thirty minutes on the call was among and something. I think any complaints they ended up just giving you a new pair of shoes in insulin, and then there's another one about flower. Flower. Company where? They, they missed delivery to someone's There was an important delivery wasn't birthday with something else and the Mr Delivery, the person foreign open ended up giving them free flowers not announced just free flowers everyone. Constantly after that. For Making one mistake. So it just shows how important is to have customer service because people like me who have nothing to do with it tells stories about. That's going to be really expensive if you're going to be willing to stay on the phone for hours with the human. So I guess Vocal Da da driven customer service help companies close that gap a little bit when it comes to that customer service advantage. I don't think they relate to that. you. You mentioned several companies that could. A similar experience. No. Before costs and for civil ones. Not just automated, but I will make sure that. The customer experience comes first. So this is our ideal customer. So for instance, American Express is also where known. In. you know in in their? Ability and willingness to invest quite a lot. In order to provide great experience. So when we met with them initially, they were very excited about us both from the ventures you need. innovation and business the different business units. So that got us into a place where they invested in as they are one of our. Trusted the Bucknell's and we are Again one example for. For Great Company that believes in US and knows the importance. Products, and hopefully some of these will stick around for the long haul, but we are starting off with some savoury items. We've got an exciting egg for todd with Swiss cheese and cauliflower so I. I saw these in the freezer section. I know Aaron who works with US swears by these. She said Lisa. You need to try this. You put it in a flat bread. You make a rap out of it I think they're super cute and you. You can do a lot with them. It says the serving as to for Tatas, but I feel like you only need one especially. If you're creative with it, they have one hundred and thirty five calories, each seven and a half grams of fat twelve and a half grams of protein and their little egg pucks. They're cute. "Of it is actual ethanol alcohol, and some other items of recently launches well is we expanded our Shell House? Hard Seltzer line sensors are extremely popular right now. People love them because they're lower in carbs. Lowering calories than beer. Ours also happened to be gluten free because they're using. Sugar to create the alcohol instead of brains, and the two flavors that we've added are arise berry as well as the line. Those are just out. So. How come Seltzer is? What's happening to beer? People are gravitating to non beer is what we've seen in our stars, which has been interesting for me just to see the transition, but I do think it's people are looking for alternatives. They want the lower carbs. It's more of a lifestyle healthy choice I guess. Making my way to a better tomorrow at Trader Joe's. We have the category of beer that we've decided to put all these other things in because they don't really make sense in any other categories to rebrand that as adult beverages. There about one hundred twenty calories per twelve ounces, which is less than a regular beer, but more than a light air I, know people who have switched from a light beer to the heart. Seltzer beat just because it. It's a better drinking experience. Taste better, so we talked about a couple of things that are in stores now. What's coming the One? I'm most excited about. Is the cookie butter? Under the heading of. Heights. Be Damned like this would not pass that frightening. GERMANIC purity law and I'm kind of excited about that. Because this got a bunch of weird stuff in it and it also at that higher ab level at that sort of dessert cookie profile like I don't think this is something that you have while mowing the lawn. Mean maybe you do. I don't know as beer has evolved on their all these styles of beer, and all these craft breweries I you see people drinking beer differently it's it's not just hanging out watching football with a twelve pack watching Polo with cookie butter. Like I would have it as an after dinner, dessert beer, and you could pair with anything with butter on top of it might give it the Elvis treatment. I might have cookie butter with the slices and the and the cookie butter beer on the speculation cookies. And I guess the foil was treatment at the site of Bacon. This is a project that's been tears and the making trader Joe's is cookie butter headquarters, so we couldn't have an okay cookie. Butter Beer had a taste justice guidance. What's in the jar? So. How many iterations did it take I would say? This is probably version number eighteen nice originally started off as a porter base, but you really couldn't taste the cookie butter. At all are really pick up on the aromatics, so he switched over to an imperial Ale, and that was really the trick to making it work. It's nine point five percent a B. And it tastes just as good as what happened the jars. When is that in the fall in the winter? When when is that happening around September? We'll sticking on. The desert feared trend. We also have a copy. Peanut Butter Cup quarter on its way, so this will be in stores around. Halloween, so all the kids have candy. The adult can have candy while the kids are having candy I. Totally get it I was with you. Road soda for trick or treating? But they're using. Here's a peanut butter powder. Coffee peanut butter porter in chocolate and chocolate. Okay so that one a sort of around Halloween time? Okay? What else last fall? We had a hailing gourd. Pumpkin Ale as well as Gort Tree Pumpkin CIDER. Our customers loved them, so he wanted to do something similar for the winter. We're going to launch a ginger beard spiced stout as well as toasty cookie spice CIDER. They're using really warm winter spices, so cinnamon nutmeg, all spice and Clo- in the one thing that's really important to point out about the CIDER. Is it's. It's one hundred percent fermented apple juice. It's not from concentrate. It's definitely more expensive to us. About is ingredient, but it's a much better product. Are The howling Gordon, the Gordon Durie coming this year. Yes, we'll be in storage this fall late. September early October question, cans or bottles glass aluminum. It's definitely been a transition towards cans. Cans are lighter weight, so it's less expensive to shop, and so a lot of breweries have switched over to Kenny lines. It's also more efficient. Packaging process for them as well. Aluminum cans are because they block out light. And you know I mean Brown glass was introduced to you know early nineteen hundreds on a large scale basis to protect veer from light but. Have Been Dick Class Save for so long right sort of low end, but now they have more of a high end treatment going on. Why did that change happen? It was all of a sudden if I already gone to a bottle shop, everything was in bottles. I guess we have to call it. A can shop, but everything sends switched over to cans. There's different formats. There's twelve ounces now. There's one thousand nine point, two ounce cans or sixteen ounce cans. We should have one. We called the Tallboy, but now air all these other sizes, the big and tall shop for beers. I to shop there. When I was a kid, I still might have to actually, but then there's other barriers that you want to see in a bottle, a barrel aged beer. It's more higher end. And you WanNa see the Nice Little Cork at the top. Is there anything else that you want to get out there about beer and what you're doing and what's happening in beer world trader? JOE'S WE'RE NOT GONNA have every beer available to you but virus really hard to have a local selection. That's interesting. Actually think that the beer section in a given store is probably the most locally tailored part of the store I think we've covered most of the stuff that we wanted to ask you about. Say think there's someone you should really talk to who it stand. He's one of the world's foremost recognized experts and beer, and he makes fear for trader Joe's. He's one of our favorite partners work with. As Catherine just said to us we are. GonNa talk to somebody who knows a thing or two about beer? Well, my background is TAT has put me on the map and that is a German educated. Bring engineer so Dan. Are you currently working from home or are you working at the brewery? What's happening right now? Go back and forth, but right now I'm speaking here from my kitchen table. What prompted you to go to beer school and find a beer school in Germany? That's pretty neat. Story I loved that tangible and satisfaction elements that come with producing something and I love beer so I put the two together and I said working. I learned from the best of the best. Best and that was at the Technical University of Munich. You've been responsible for a lot of the most popular beers that we sell a trader Joe's. We were successful. Right out of the gain was a huge honor by the way to be selected by trader Joe's to develop this program starting with our classic styles, and then evolving into some really creative in different semantics, so just taking the hotspurs hard cider, we were approached originally, because the qualitative level of the heart side are being produced for trader Joe's didn't really reflect philosophy. I'd say strangers is to go as natural as possible all the time using the purest ingredients we did eliminate every ingredient except for fresh pressed apple juice. So. There's some technology we put into place. Enable us to go all natural, which none of.

"Remember red blend from a NAPA winery that was selling for sixty bucks. The. The wineries website that trader Joe's was celebrate twelve ninety nine. I remember Penal Nuwara that the. Company and made it with sign up for ninety nine dollars, a magnum that trader Joe's was selling for thirteen dollars. You know you get those prices and not everyone. Is that price? But that's kind of the fun is because you're getting these winds. That, you don't know where they're from their negotions. By this point. You kind of have a history trader Joe's. And you're getting these name brand wineries making wines, and you know sometimes you don't know because a name you know some name brand. wineries sold it to this company who then context rated Joe's and has. Make an Kinda bounces down the road a ways. But that's kind of fun. I liked that aspect of the winds and you really don't. There are negotions out there the retail shops. There's a couple of people are doing that stuff and. But it doesn't mean it's not as elaborate a trader. Joe's a couple of people doing negotions. You can go to retail shop and get negotiate wine. But you don't always. It's not always as up front as trader Joe's and as inexpensive as trader Joe's. So. That's I really like that aspect of it where I don't know I'm going to have a one line when it's done, it's done who is it? Where is it? Why is it in? Is Actually. As good as your hoped it to be in whatever and all. He doesn't quite do that as much. Aldi also has. their champagne. Last year was the best wine I think I had all year is a nineteen ninety nine champagne, and then they had the The Rosa from Provence that sold out in our and a half. So. As they're crazy deals to and their. Their, wines that are interesting, so that's edgy, got us a huge. Huge buying power. They have a ton of stores where they can move wine. Put Hair, but they're. They're getting really good. They're really. They started out working with European winemakers, and like I, said their reputation in Europe is huge and United States getting pretty good, too, and you know just because you're seen price of what's debts to Chiba. Camping any good. There are advantages that. By being store is, you'd be surprised. How many people have store fronts pretty much? Every grocery store any kind of. Liquor store. Chain of any size has some wines in there. That's just their wind brand. There's so many bandages to have brand just made for you. Because you're you're cutting out. Certain costs that are that are really substantial cost sometimes. And with trader Joe's. Me If. WanNa know who made the wine. Look at the back label, because always says you know what part of California Washington. Oregon it was made that and look at what city that is and type in wineries from that city. Whatever the biggest one isn't that setting? That's probably who made it. So there are really good wineries making their wine. There's reasons why they have bandages of cost in the have, they can sell a lot of wine. The more you, the more wine, you can sell cheaper, you can sell it. Why want to sell it to them? You get a wine trader Joe's relying on wind the trader Joe's. You're pretty much. You're you're going to make a profit that year. Because you're. GonNa Pay Upfront. You're going to move a lot of grapes. You can some wineries like so a lot of wine inexpensively, and that's how to make their profit, and they make these high end wines. That makes a reputation. So this is a win. Win All way around the board. That's kind of why we go to trader Joe's and all. Because you get wines in the right. Price Point that we're looking for. They know how to pick out wines. Winds are usually pretty interesting. They seem to take care of IT I. Don't get that many bad bottles of wine. They're not overheating and they're not doing bad things with them. They seem to move quick enough, so there really isn't any problems with the that can go wrong. They're interesting. They're fun. The European wines are kind of like how they drink in Europe and American wines are some the biggest winemakers making them lions. And, that's why we picked out trader. I guess they're not the only place to go. There's a lot of value priced wines at retail wine shops, and we'll get into that tune a little bit. We'll go in a little different regions. What have you? But. There's reasons why they're inexpensive. There's reasons why we like them, and there's reason why they're pretty interested in the nave over the years. They've gotten really good at doing what they do. And they have wines. You gotta take a chance. You got to like what they do. But if you do like what they're, winds are going to get a bargain, and that's what cheap wind finer is all about, and that's why we go to cheap wine finder and all to find wines to write about a good deal of time and I think last year. Nine of the top ten wine reviews on our website or from trader, Joe's Aldi. Seems like the rest of you like to? So. It's for me on this one Keep a cheap. And come something pretty soon. And hope everything's open it up. Everything's Nice and sunny and. Hopefully things. Are Better no justice, no peace and I'll be talking. Bye Bye!.

"Trader Joe's team about four years ago now. I am a category manager in the Boston. Office and I work primarily on shelf stable beverages and our coffee and tea section in the coffee category now at trader. Joe's we used to do one thing. We used to whole beans in a nitrogen flesh canton and that was kind of our coffee section and now we have pods. We have ground coffee. We have whole bean coffee. We have limited edition. Coffees like there's a lot going on in the category. Yes and that's actually something. That's shifting right now. Is seeing our customers. Move away from those big cans of hold being coffee and we're seeing growth in ground but there are some copies that they're better left holding until you're ready to grind and brew but when we look at what we're GonNa do with it. There's a couple of factors that come into play the coffee grinders and the store. Is this going to fit? Under the grinders and easy to use as easy to reclosed for our customers is better off and can format but overall with our sustainability initiatives as. Well we are moving away from the can to Be a little more green earth friendly. What packaging is more sustainable than McCann coming soon? We have worked with a couple of our major vendors to up with a home compostable back so same format as are bad. Coffees are now but completely impossible. We are going to attempt to move in that direction. And we're doing the same thing with our pods and a couple of other items in the category. I say we're probably six to twelve months away before we see any hit the shelves. We're close. We're not there yet but we're almost there. It's pretty exciting. Trying to figure out how our customers making coffee are these people a classic drip through or are they making. Cold brew at home are they. Using a MOCHA stove. Top Espresso maker. Are they like what the heck? How do we get a sense of that? How do we get any intelligence from customers on this? It's a little trial and error. Everybody's really picky and has their own methods and so we just have to find something that is available for every type of error. So how do we do that and still be true to what we are attempting to be? That is not everything for everybody. An area we do. Shy Away from is flavored. Whole being when you add a flavor. Sometimes that I mean obviously it narrows the audience so we have French Vanilla. It's very applicable flavor. Everybody expansional coffee. I think or a has at some point. Speak for yourself Lawrence. Sorry we've done some interesting things where they are. Ostensibly flavored coffees. But they're like spiced or seasoned coffee. So we have that great wintry blend. It's like basically coffee with a bunch of spices in it exactly. So it's a cleaner way to approach a flavor than adding some artificial flavor to a grand copy and not that. That's what everybody out there doing. But that is really the way to get that flavor punch. And we don't WanNa do that. How do you determine this coffee should be whole being? This coffee should be ground. This one deserves to go and a cup or a pod really thinking about the customer and one thing we're seeing in terms of changes in the category is ground. Coffee is growing our ground. Coffee Selection hasn't grown as much. We're working on it. Let's say the biggest trend seen over the past couple years would be cold BREW FOR THE SAKE OF CLARITY? What is the cold and cold brew mean what is Cold Brew Cold Brew? Coffee is coffee. That has been brewed using zero. Hot Water you are brewing. The coffee from cold water and letting it steep in cold water versus hot brew. Which is where you are. Traditional coffee from we wanted to hit that in a couple of different areas and we achieved with their cold brew. Concentrate and we have some other Cobra options coming. That don't need to be drank colds. But it's were brew cold. You're going to have a less acidic experience overall like I said just a smoother coffee flavor overall. I don't know if you can tell I prefer Cobra. How do we find coffees? How do we source our coffee? Items like our land and our everyday assortment. Those really are a result of what our customers were lacking dark. Roast rely lacking medium light so we kind of search for items to fit those gaps. We really do rely on our vendor partners to tweak the roasts and beans and everything's who the exact specification we are asking for versus small lot. Coffee there are boots on the ground in these remote areas of the world and they are finding the coffee for us and they bring it back and they say I found these wonderful options from these small lot farms and we can have all of their crop for this year. What do you think I mean? There are more than sixty countries around the world that grow coffee. Most you know within a thousand miles of the equator. It's the BEAN BELT. But then there's this almost al chemical process of roasting so what you do with beans beans. Almost nothing without the roast. So if it's a small farm in some remote country near the equator will take a farms entire production a small farm for that year. We'll take the whole production so it's a small lot. Our customers really respond to it. It's really great. Oh my gosh. When can I get more of that? It would be at least a year. Yeah because we are taking their whole crop and so they have to grow that crop and it may not taste exactly the same second time but that's the beauty of it and it's a very different experience than the way we source our copy for our Joe's medium Joe's dark well and we're looking for consistency with dark and the JOE's medium. We're looking for something that every time. A customer opens that bag. They know exactly what they're going to get. That's my Joe's right. Every time has to smell and ultimately taste with an expectation whereas a small lot is both storytelling and a Great Cup of coffee. Smalls a relative term right I would say. Typically a small lot is one to two containers. Okay forty to eighty thousand pounds which to me sounds like wow that is like swimming pools multiple swimming pools full of confidence. When you think about you know all the stores all the customers that are excited about it. It probably doesn't last very long. And that's probably a good thing. I'M GONNA guess we want to make space for the next small out we've got coming in. We started the small out program we only had. I think maybe two or three and one year and we're working towards having ten to twelve and twenty twenty one. We have eight coming out this year. Where would these beans ago? Were it not for trader? Joe's buying them sometimes they may go nowhere. And so we're really helping a community taking all of this product from them and that that's their year. I WanNa talk about bulk bins. Because I've been in some specialty coffee shops where the coffee is all out and bins and you take a scoop and you put it in a bag and you pay for it by the pound and people tend to think well. That's really fresh and I know that not to be true but can you explain why you are putting whole beans into a bulk bin. You're exposing them to more elements than than they are when they're in the kanner in a bag you're introducing more oxygen your introducing outside contaminants. I think it's really. Oxygen is the enemy of freshness here and part of the magic of coffee is inventory turns selling stuff quickly it diminishes it becomes less of itself overtime so when you're smelling coffee and one of those small shops it means that that's just leaving the beans. We have more things in bags and you can smell coffee bags because you squeeze them and a little sh of hair might come out. But that's a one way valve right so air doesn't go back in. So that's why those become more compressed and compacted the more you squeeze them because I'm always squeezing those bags in a storage but that's me and looking for poking stuff from stores Mr whipple. It's a one way valve. You're just pushing out some of the nitrogen oxygen. That is still in there. And that's exactly why they get almost Where you can see like the beans on the outside of the bag because it will really tight pants dislike still fit still fit and once upon a way back. Our coffee canisters did not have those valves and every so often they would get packed a little too soon after roasting and they would just blow up and sometimes they would explode. I recommend squeezing those banks system. Squeeze the coffee the coffee anything coming out that you're really excited.

"Known as hungry girl here in Hungary land with Mikey and Jamie. Hello, guys. How I how are you? You good. It's nice to see you too. It's not like I haven't seen you all morning. But as ISIS here. Here. We're going to see you for a very long time taking a trip. But we're here today at the podcast table, people always say where do you record your podcast? We recorded at a table with a purple tablecloth now. Can you envision us for awhile? We just had a beach towel draped over the table and then didn't look very official. So it's new peon Snoopy beach town. It was couldn't you tell by the velvety, soft feels nice blanket. Oh, I don't know. Maybe it is a blanket. What do I know? Okay. So we're digressing today is a super exciting episode because so few weeks ago, we had a Costco, hall, episode that broke the internet in our world of the internet. So we are doing our very first trader Joe's hall episode. How exciting is that? I know you can't see it. But my grin is ear to ear. I'm so excited. You're two years, she's grinning, so here's the deal. The trader Joe's hall episode, this is an episode that basically, Jamie and Erin went out to trader Joe's when I was away last week. In New York and bought everything under the sun like you guys came back with giant bag. We inspected, every crevice in corner of trader Joe's for new or interesting products. And you know how great trader Joe's is. And they have like I always say this, but I envision these magical trader Joe's fairies inventing new things like every week. I know it's amazing. I don't know how they keep doing it. It's like they're reading our minds. So you guys came back with a slew. I mean, like you unloaded it the other day on the counter, and I was like, I cannot wait to try all of it. So we are going to go through all the products and taste them live for your listening, pleasure. Yeah. None of us have tried not even one of these have been tasted, so they mail stink. But they probably won't. I was recognized at trader Joe's for the first time the other day I was so excited because I always feel like I mean I'm not recognized in public very often. And when it happens, I'm still at the point where I'm so excited that anyone knows who I am. And usually they're like I thought you'd be allowed taller. The consistent thing they say, but I always think if I'm at trader Joe's, that's probably the most likely place to be. Exactly. So basically she said she said, I'm here looking for all the things you recommend also. So I forced to take you selfie a selfie with me. Which is usually goes the other way. But I did I said, please, take a selfie with you. And then we should post that selfie the Calabasas one of her. Yes. The new beautiful trader Joe's I love that place. And the cashier was like, who the hell are, you know, you don't don't feel bad that you don't know who anyway. So we're gonna start off today by trying some breakfast -i ish items, first up is going to be the brand new coconut, cold brew coffee concentrates. That's a mouthful. It really is Coca Cola brew coffee concentrate. So this is the kind of thing it's concentrated cold brew. You add water to it, and you.

"Discover trader Joe's totally by accident. That's Mark gardener. Again, the former advertising executive who end up working at traderjoes. He was living in California at the time. I thought it was a local store had a kind of a surf fem-, and I didn't know any better because they don't do any advertising. I only was exposed to it have to be my neighborhood, then Gardner moved to Kansas City. Yes. And that's when I really learned about trader Joe's company because there was no trader Joe's. But there were these rumors of it. We're going to get a trader Joe's, and there was so much excitement. There's a Facebook page called bring trader Joe's to Kansas City that has five thousand friends as a former advertising guy Gardner was impressed. I think the number one thing that struck me about trader Joe's is that. They almost don't advertise at all. They don't market they they. They have a pretty good website now, but but for years at a rudimentary website, they had almost no social media presence to they had almost no public relations. So they didn't do a whole bunch of things that I had spent my entire working life thinking. Well, these are the things that you do when you build a brand. So that was really striking to me. And I just had this thought like, you know, what if I went and worked there? What would I learn about this company Gardner learned enough about the company by working there that he wrote a book about it called build a brand like trader Joe's? How did trader Joe's respond? Well, as you know, they're very very secretive company. So they responded exactly the way I expected which was with utter silence. What initially impressed Gardner was how trader Joe's at grown so much. Outspending all the money that most firms spend on marketing advertising, and so on but what impressed him once he got inside working as a crew member for twelve dollars an hour was the company's culture. Well, before the new Kansas City store had opened on the first or second day of training. A trader Joe's executive came in to meet with the roughly fifty new hires including Gardner, the proceedings began with that standard horrifying requests to say your name and tell a story about yourself. And I am not kidding. You fifty hands went up. It was all these people picked me I want to be the first I wanna start. I want to tell you my story. And I looked around at that that group of hands going up and mine was up to you know, because I'm because I love talking about myself. But but most people don't at least not to group of strangers NFL. Wow. This is not an ordinary group of people. And what I realized pretty quickly is only God visits. What they hire for the higher for this kind of extroverted naturally chatty person. As the training progressed. These guys really weren't too worried about teaching me how to operate a grocery store. Right. I mean, there was some discussion about keeping the Colt things cold. And how important that is? And and there was a little bit of discussion about this is how a cash register works about. You know, when you're bagging groceries. This is how you do it. There was some discussion of process, but actually there was a lot of discussion of trader Joe's values. There was a tremendous amount of discussion about how are you going to be with the customers? And then once the store opened no matter how crazy the store was no matter how much pressure. There was to do something else. If you were doing something for a customer that trumped everything. Seeing how trader Joe's encouraged its employees to interact with customers to partner up with them. Didn't just make sense to Gardner. It inspired him to wonder why this theoretically obvious approach is in fact, quite rare consider he says a standard trip to the department of motor vehicles. But what happens when you go to the DMV? Well, what happens is you stand on one side of a counter, then there's your opponent on the other side of the counter. And it's as if you're in sort of a game or a sport where your trying to get your license plate or driver's license. And they're going to say, oh, yeah. You don't have an up-to-date inspection certificate for your cars. So get out of here. Right. It's like a volleyball game practically, and it's and it's you against them..

"trader joe" Discussed on Freakonomics

"I I got interested in trader Joe's about ten years ago never been to one of their stores, but I had a general impression cheap and cheerful relatively laid back and sort of groovy for grocery store, apparently reflection of its surfie, California roots, also not aggressively health conscious but leaning in that direction. And then I read Wall Street Journal article about German grocery chain called Aldy that was ramping up its US expansion all the is a super cheap super generic grocery store. Ninety five percent of its products were house brands, and it was beating even WalMart on price. The article said the chain had two branches back in Germany separately owned by two wealthy brothers named Albrecht. And that one of those branches also owned trader Joe's I found. This back surprising only because when I think of German business practices. I don't think of a groovy earthy, crunchy, California surf vibe, but there. So it was I also learned that trader Joe's stores were much smaller in typical supermarkets that they had their own way of doing things and the places without trader Joe's often started petitions to bring one to their town. It was a sort of loony devotion usually reserved for sports teams or your favorite band kinda grocery store has a following like that. And then when I learned that trader Joe's out sells all other grocery stores per square foot. I really started paying attention then one opened up near my office here in New York started shopping there and the most part loving it. I realize it's not for everyone. In fact, predator strategy is trying not to be for everyone. But I did want to know the secrets to their success. We reached out to the trader Joe's headquarters in Monrovia, California. And we're politely told to get lost. As we mentioned earlier, the company is known for its secrecy. The two brothers who founded all north and all the south in Germany. You know, have a record of that Michael Roberto again that was kind of the family heritage of early being pretty secretive about their business operations. And really, they weren't even you couldn't even find photos of them like on the internet for years. I mean, they were very secretive. It's a strange combination affirm that prides itself on user-friendliness while also keeping its distance which means that a lot of what's known about. It comes from industry. Analysts and other secondary. Sources blitz start here in the very beginning. There really was a Joe behind trader Joe's, Joe Colom. He opened the first store in nineteen sixty seven in Pasadena, California. He went with a South Seas theme beach Hawaiian shirts calling employee's captains and crew members in nineteen seventy nine Colom sold the chain to one of the secretive Albrecht brothers feel feel Albrecht was recluse. Perhaps it was said because he had once been kidnapped and held for ransom. For seventeen days in Germany Albrecht died in two thousand ten but trader Joe's remains notoriously press shy. It's also a privately held company. So no earnings calls with investment analysts. No public proclamations of any sort really about how it does business. And so to figure out how it works will rely on a few people who've spent a lot of time thinking about trader Joe's, including the business school. Professor Michael Burto, we've already met correct? Also, the Columbia business school, professor Sheena anger, whose research specialty is particularly relevant here. I've been studying choice. Why do we want choice? "Of course, many of the trader Joe's products, you love are made right here in the good ole US avai, I'm in a longtime. Trader Joe's vendor in southern California. This company has been creating products for trader Joe's for decades, actually. And they make a lot of tortillas for us and some other things as well. We are a family business. My grandfather started the business second-generation took it over and ran it for a number of years recently. We've we've begun to transition to third generation. So that's you. That's me. Can you show us? What's over here? There's a great process because it really demonstrates what we're doing differently. So the henstridge tortilla it's fluffy. Right. Whereas a convention through the class. But here's a place of dough ball and individual adobo on the belt, and then some trained individuals black Sheehan's strict through the round flat shape. But if you're making tortillas from scratch at home, you're stretching them by hand until they get that fluffy or texture. Right. So that that is that then this one in particular. My grandfather started this is the one that is our best selling grandfather started thirty years and still to this day sin. Trader Joe's and still to this day. It's probably. Well, one of our best the excuse, right? I I would argue that maybe it's one of the best that Trudeau's. But that's my. Please told it for thirty years. It must be doing. Okay. Thank you. My grandfather started it, and this is still my father and his siblings that continued it and thankfully, there's something for my family to continue to help grow. My son does work here on summers. He helps box product into the master cases or my daughter who's nine shreds paper. Or does Officeworks? You got to be a little bit safer than than on the factory floor with heavy equipment moving by. But yeah, I think I think they will be involved. And I hope it's not just my children. Maybe my my nieces or nephews got employees have been here generations now right there for grandfather started with my grandfather they've continued on and I've hired some of the new ones, and it's it's it's a center of of of the area the community. So Anthony, we've been talking a lot about trader Joe's products that come from around the world. It's been really nice to be here with you kind of around the corner. Oh, thank you. Thank you. "I'm Tara Miller. The director of words, and phrases and causes. And I'm manslaughter in the marketing product guy this episode is titled around the world in eighty trader Joe's products give or take at traderjoes. Our crew goes just about everywhere, literally circumnavigating the globe on a weekly basis to satiate your unrelenting desire for new food discoveries. You may think that's overly dramatic. But it's not hyperbolic. Our crew does have their fair share of adventures from around the world or around the corner as they searched for new products and on this episode. We'll ask them to tell you some of their better stories at trader Joe's. We really do. Discover cultures of the world through food. When Joe Colom was really sort of shaping the idea that would become trader Joe's, it was within the context of people are gonna start flying around the world and seeing new things and eating new things and tasting tastes that they want to be able to taste when they're back home. You may have been in France and had this terrific cheese. But you may not have made it to the Republic of Georgia and had these really interesting dumplings that makes me want to travel even more. So we're talking to Arlene and Jenny who are product innovators here at trader Joe's are essentially the boots on the ground. We travel the world, and we find the wildfire customers you kind of have the coolest job in the world. Yeah. Find I feel very blessed. Very blessed. Everyone tells me that the media reaction is that is so cool. You don't get. Why did you discontinue jasmine green tea? That's what I the second. Yeah. Yeah. One of the best part is constantly experiencing. Nut sense of discovery. Like having something for the first time or seeing something for the first time like I really value experiences. And I mean, that's that's what I want for customers. Product innovation. Sounds like a fancy way to describe the treasure hunt. Like going into a trader Joe's and finding something that you never knew existed. And all of a sudden, it just might become your new favorite thing. We travel the world we try to. Find things in different corners of the world that people can't get to. Yeah. It's it's go go go. How many countries have you visited do, you know? Can you give me a ballpark since the past two years? Goodness. Maybe like fifteen to twenty at. I don't know. It's like so many every time I put a list together. I'm like, wow. All over Europe. Italy, Germany, France, Greece New Zealand Japan, Thailand, Mexico, actually, one of my friend's dad every time I see him. He loves us. So where to go and some lines of work. They would they would discover the culture through music or through art. And we discovered the culture of through the food. What is what's your favorite trip that you've been on from a product development standpoint, there's a couple, but I would say one that is the most recent is Republic of Georgia. The what was really interesting to me is that the us tons of wild herbs, and they have tons of. Dips, and you know, we love dip since so I thought dot translated pretty well. They have dumplings. So dumplings like perogie or dumplings more like a typical Asian dumpling. They literally looked like the soup dumplings like the Chinese soup dumplings, but they're huge. They're like, maybe like half of your hand. And how you need it. You flip it over and take a little bit of nib in suck all the soup out and slowly finish it, and you can toss the knob because it's can be a little bit doughy or people like it if they like chewy texture and they're filled with meat. Yes. So they're they're traditionally filled with me, I think be four like beef and lamb or just lamb but nowadays, you can find mushrooms vegetables cheese potatoes, like all sorts of different fillings, Jenny. You recently went to New Zealand any products that you that came in from that experience..
