Kurt Schlichter and Eric Discuss the Problem With Deep State RINOs

"I have to say, the cynicism of what we now know as rhinos, deep state rhinos, George Bush, the first and others. They were not interested in bringing these I mean, you have to realize these people themselves in their quiet way were anti American founders. When you think of George Bush senior and that ilk, they were not excited about liberty and Ben Franklin and George Washington, whatever they were excited about the status quo. And it is heartbreaking to me, frankly, it is heartbreaking to me to think that they had this kind of cowardly view that they were not really interested in paying the price necessary to bring the freedoms that we have to others around the world. We are where we are because of them. And I voted for some of them. Well, so did I and there are a bunch of votes I'd like to take back. But rarely has, I mean, go back to go back to Roman times, which I do in the book will be back the fall and rise of America. And you'll see what happens when you have a great power whose elite becomes so corrupt and inept. And unaccompanied. I mean, really, these are unaccomplished people. We are being ruled by people who really have never done it. I mean, look at Liz Cheney. Liz Cheney would be a annoying middle school librarian telling happy kids to use their inside voice and going home and drowning her sorrows on screw top Chardonnay from Trader Joe's every night. If her father hadn't hitched his wagon to the bushes.

"Paid for farmer. This is WTO news. It's 5 53 Employees have unionized at a Trader Joe's supermarket in Massachusetts. The union passed on a vote of 45 to 31 in the town of Hadley, that's western Boston. Their store is the first Trader Joe's with an employee's union of the workers at two other locations are working on it. The next step is putting together a committee to negotiate a contract with the California based company, which has about 550 Trader Joe's stores nationwide. Outdoor dining and Leesburg is now a long-term option for restaurant owners. The town council agreed to extend the outdoor dining, which began during the pandemic. Mayor Kelly Burke says it's really popular. Truly, I think this was one of the things that we did that saved many of our downtown businesses, our businesses period. Having these tents provided an alternative for people that felt uncomfortable going into restaurants. And I know that many of them along with the curb pick up are very excited and want to continue to use the tents. Council members okay to plan to let restaurant owners set up outdoor seating in their parking lots. There's no longer a requirement to maintain 6 feet between tables, but restaurant owners will have to add fencing around the outdoor dining area. It is a bad idea health wise to keep pulling out that salt shaker every time you sit down to eat. But eating some fruit, maybe a lot of fruit can reduce the risk. What was interesting, the researchers also found that increasing the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, weakened the association between salt use and mealtimes and premature death. "Entrepreneurship and new products is a hedge against inflation. When you create new things, all of a sudden that can bring prices down. But when you have entire labor markets of young people that have the same sort of meaningless skills of being able to recite why America's racist or the BLM creed or how many different genders are pronouns there or whatever they teach at universities in all these days, which is largely useless 90% of kids that go to college should not go to college, which is a theme that we will build out more in the coming months as my book is coming up. Then all of a sudden, then you have a whole generation of people that rent and they don't own, they have somewhat useless skill sets and they now have to try to keep up with the rate of which prices are going up. Play cut 99, the only thing that won't cost more for your Super Bowl party are hot dogs, but chicken ground beef and steak are up double digits, play cut 99. Two words, Laura hot dogs. I like them. Only thing that won't cost more for your Super Bowl party, hot dogs for everything else inflation is your uninvited guest to the party this year. Watch out at the meat counter. Those hot dogs are cheaper, but all the other meat is more expensive. Chicken wings, prices up nearly 12% from last year, ground beef for your chili, 13% more steak prices they're up more than 21%. Rick santelli continues by saying, look, wages are up 5%, but they're not even close to keeping up with inflation. Now the way that our government calculates inflation, I think, is fraudulent. I believe inflation has been happening for the last decade. It just hasn't been reflected in the way that the government actually puts together the CPI the consumer price index. They get to choose the goods and services. I think inflation has been almost double digits for a while now. I could be out on a limb here, but I don't think so, because I see, for example, rent going up, I mean, you go to a local Trader Joe's, you go to a local restaurant here every price is up, not just 10%. I'm talking 15 to 20% increase of prices across the board.

"Pancreatic enzymes in them or is that something totally different. That's a good question. I actually don't know the answer to that because our training is in specific supplement lines. So I only work with standard process because it's been around. It makes like an ice cream. Yeah. Yeah, and that one does have some porcini qualities in it, you know, so it's not like vegetarian or vegan, but basically what's nice about it is it helps any time you do drink alcohol or have sugar and if you take that, it takes the burden off the body. Okay. And so for whatever reason, the other thing we see this with in terms of pancreatic enzymes, if you're eating things that have like tapioca starch war gone, any types of binders like that, thickener, stabilizer. Those kinds of things. Which is probably why the paleo diet seems to work so well in conjunction with your program because it's like definition. We're not doing a lot of shopping at Trader Joe's and all the package foods that are perceived to be healthy, but in reality on this all of them have fillers and gums and carrageenan and stabilizers and even the healthy stuff. Yes. Right. So that's why I tell people you open my fridge at home because I am pretty good about that. Like people like it's just all glass mason jars, dude, where's the cardboard? There's not on the crinkly open the sides when you occasionally use a blue bottles and stuff like that. Yeah. And so part of the issue with that as well that people don't realize is that a lot of times people follow a paleo diet and they don't really do it right. So for example, they're not doing organic. So if you're not doing organic pesticides, cashew butter all day long. Yeah, and that's not paleo. And then if you're eating stuff with pesticides, you're not doing paleo. If you're eating conventional animal protein, that's the other thing that cracks me up when people do paleo and.

"Dip. I'm not supposed to microwave it even worse. So can she do far too far? So is it was sweet? It was sweet cheese. I don't even and now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think they marketed it as pumpkin spice, but just pumpkin, 'cause they were leaning into the squash element of it. However it was too close to pumpkin spice and yikes. That got composted. All right, one more. Most likely to give you heartburn. The first product I tried in 2021 were the crispy fried habanero slices, and they are actual hell. And they will like actual chilies. Yeah, that have been fried and preserved in oil and they are so, so hot. Wow. They'll burn you, they'll burn you up inside. Oh my God. It might be worth it. It might be worth it. You think they're good? Like, I like heartburn. I again, because I'm not a masochist, but I kind of liked it because Trader Joe's is conver on the side of safely bland. Yeah. So when you find something actually spicy, I'm always shocked. Like the peri peri sauce that came out last year was actually spicy and I really like that one. It's a fermented hot sauce. Yeah, yeah. All right, I think I already know the answer to this one, but what is most likely to appear on the Internet at a markup? Oh, God. Most likely be resold on Amazon. Is the everything but the bagel, sesame seasoning. Trader Joe's resellers on Amazon is an entire niche industry because like I said, there's very few Trader Joe's stores across country. So people hear all this exciting talk, but we're having very thrilling and they want to try and buy this stuff. So some of it's sold on Amazon and the everything but the bagel seasoning is the most popular one. And I see people buying like $15 for two jars when it's I think $2 a jar less at the store. Wow. Also considering it's just everything bagel seasoning. It's not that rare. You can find other brands that make it. You can find it in your there's so many knock offs now. You can also make it with the spices that you have. Yeah. But it's just got a little special little Trader Joe's halo around. And I just started realizing that every time now that I see everything but the bagel on a product, I start thinking like, you know what, what I really want is a bagel. Bring back the bagel. Trader Joe's been here though. We just want the bagel. I want everything and the bagel. Give it to me. Speaking of cult products that morph into other products, talk to me about speculoos cookie butter here. First talk about speculoos cookie butter for those who may not know and then talk about the beer. Yeah, after the Mandarin orange chicken, I think this speculoos cookie butter is one of the most iconic Trader Joe's products of all time. It's just cookie dough flavored peanut butter, but it's not actually peanuts in it. Every so often people will DM me, I just got this. It's amazing. You have to find it. And that'll send me on these crazy searches and they'll start to take over other priorities I have in my life. And finding the speculoos beer, cookie butter flavored beer, sounds so gross, but I want it to try it so bad. It sounds like Harry Potter, like butterbeer. Is it alcoholic or is it like a root beer? Oh yeah and it's beer. Oh my God. I don't know. With Trader Joe's, you can't knock until you try it because you never know. Yeah. Okay, let's talk about in the alcohol vein. I feel like a lot of Trader Joe's juices are just mixers in disguise. All of them. Basically all of them. My favorite is a spicy mango lemonade. I think it's summer only, but if you can find it, you have to have that for your margarita mix. It is so good. I love that one. Last year, 2020, the sparkling strawberry juice came out and these thin little cans, that one is also amazing with vodka. And I gave one of the sparkling cranberry sparkling strawberry one of those things to my nieces and they had never had anything sparkling before and they call it spicy water. Was that spicy water, Alex I love it. It does kind of prick the back of your throat, you know? Yeah. So in our final time together, because you have been doing these reviews for so long and also because you are a creative genius, I would love to hear if you were in a board meeting with Trader Joe's. And you were to pitch them on 5 products that they needed to commission or find for 2022, what would they be? Okay, I can only do 5. I have so many ideas. If anyone from Trader Joe's corporate is listening, I was just you can get the rest. My first priority is I want the spud crunchies to return their discontinued chip that looks like a French fry, but it's just a potato chip. And my revival of them is called son of a spud crunchy. Oh. So I want to give this another chance. But they're the same. They're just on new packaging. Okay, new branding, new name, new branding, got it. Okay. Everything but the lettuce salad mix and it's just a plastic bag filled with 37 little plastic bags of salad toppings like soy almonds and craisins. Most likely to fill the landfill. It's just, it's like a Russian doll of plastic bags. Yeah. Well, if there's one thing I can cut on and Trader Joe's is like yet another salad mix and they make me so angry because they're so unnecessary. So that's my pitch and I hope they take it. Who wants salad anyway? Yeah. You just want the craisins. Last year I tried, they had a frozen. It was like frozen spaghetti. Spaghetti is one of the easiest things you can cook. And that drove me crazy, but I was thinking time for Trader Joe's to do frozen Dan Dan noodles. I would buy the hell out of that. So they're cooked the noodles are cooked and then frozen. I don't know how they do it. I'm just coming off the ideas, Amanda. So suspicious that cooked frozen pasta it reconstitutes. I don't know. You have to cook it like the gnocchi. And maybe it works maybe it doesn't, but it'll be delicious. I want that sound so good. Okay, what else? A pimento cheese jalapeno popper dip is combined with all of those until one dip, because traders always has good dick. Everything but the popper pimento cheese jalapeno dip. Oh yeah, I should have thought of a name. And then because as a food podcast, we haven't talked about the wonderful beauty selection at Trader Joe's, but I'm waiting for a crossover of unexpected Cheddar body bun. This is edible lotion. I think the speculoos cookie body butter is gonna be a better so yeah. I wonder if they've done that before. I mean they haven't, oh my God. They should do the speculoos scented body butter. But yeah, I have so many more ideas and frozen hash brown waffles. Wait, pitch me on your mom's tilapia. That's the name of the product. Your mom's tilapia. This is a frozen breaded fillet of cheap fish, whatever is on sale when it comes with about sonic glaze in a can of diet. A two for one. He has complete meal. But the Diet Coke is not frozen. It's just you just have to go with it. It's too complicated to package it otherwise. Yeah, you can frost it all at once. Love it. I mean, I can see these on the shelves immediately, really. Thank you for your support. Done. But salt. Thanks, anything else you want to say about Trader Joe's? I think we didn't touch on that feels important. I do want to shout out to my friend Bobby, Bobby is on the art team at Trader Joe's, and she's become my friend over the years, and she is responsible for a lot of the most delightful packaging at Trader Joe's. So I just want to give her some credit where credits do. Bobby, love you. Thank you so much bags. I am so glad you're going to keep writing your reviews. I will continue reading them, shopping from them, and I hope that your appetite can sustain them. Oh, I can. Thank you very much for having me. And if anybody has discovered a new Trader Joe's thing, you know that you should DM me and tell me about it because this is the closest I've gotten to investigative journalism. Thank you to Alex beggs for once again hopping on the podcast and.

"All right, I think we have to hit on some misses too. So I wanna hear what is most likely to be in your trash right now. I still feel haunted by the, I think it was in December that it was like a frozen breakfast bowl. Tofu scramble with soy chorizo. And I normally love the soy chorizo. I think it's really good. Yeah, that's a big seller. It's really good. I think it's their best meatless product, even though it's extremely extremely salty. But this tofu scramble also had a vegan cheese in it. The idea of microwaving all of this, it was just mush. And it was so disgusting and usually I don't like food waste and I will eat most of the thing that I'm tasting. But in this case, I composted it. It was really, really awful. A frozen item that did not deliver. That to say, if you're looking for a meatless burrito filling, the soy chorizo is good, so good. Oh yeah, and by tofu and if you made your own version, it would probably taste better. Yeah, I think they just flew too close to the sun. They saw the popularity of the soy chorizo and they were like, what else can we do with this? Like so many bad Trader Joe's stuff, dull scrap it tomorrow, and it's not that big of a deal. No harm no foul. They move on. Okay. Most likely to provoke a gag reflex in you. Other than that one? Yeah. Oh God. Yes, there were two pumpkin spice dips this year. The hummus, which was basically frosting, and then the one that made me win a hurl, which is pumpkin spice three cheese.

"This was over a year ago, but you look at a product and you see where it's made or you can look at the ingredients and try and track down where it's from, I don't know. I was impressed. Okay, so I know you cover mostly the new products, but what is most likely to be stocked at Trader Joe's until the end of the world. Yeah, which is any minute now. Really? So every year Trader Joe's releases a most popular items every year, the top of the list is frozen Mandarin orange chicken. And I think it's interesting because that's been a bestseller for years. The packaging is, I don't think ever change. There's a whole culture on the orange chicken. And I just love how they had the word Mandarin, just like just like chantilly. Makes it seem like there's a little something extra about it. It's frozen fried chicken with a gloopy sweet sauce. It's delicious and it's comfort food and that's what they do best. It's panda express. Yeah, I mean, I think we could devote an entire episode to just the frozen section there. That's really where trader shows shines. Okay, speaking of the frozen section, the product most likely to start fights. Between you and me, the fight is about the cauliflower gnocchi, which I'll hate till I die. A lot of people feel both ways about it. I love the cauliflower gnocchi. Tell me why you hate it. I hate it because I am quick to judge. And maybe I should have given it a second chance, but with me, there's no second chances at Trader Joe's. It's true. You don't have time for that. So the instructions are confusing. You have to saute it, but steam it. And you have to do a bit of work to get the texture that they want it to be, which is like the gnocchi. But in order to retain that texture, it is covered in the potato starch. And when I cooked it, it just became as like gooey goo booger, gross. Too much water. Okay, ew. I don't need this, and I don't like the sulfur Y cauliflower taste. To me, I would rather eat regular gnocchi and roast some cauliflower on this side. That's just not how I need to get my cauliflower in my body. I don't even care that there's cauliflower in it. I just love the texture. And I like that it barely holds its shape. It's like ravioli, but no cheese. It just sort of bursts in your mouth. Also, have you tried air fryer? Air frying it. I knew you were going to see it. Because you influenced me to get an air fryer. Now I air fry things. Everyone says that's the best way to make them and Trader Joe's has started putting air fry instructions on a lot of their frozen because they're ahead of the curve as always. Ahead of the curve. So no, I haven't done it. But I guess I will. Okay, this is a niche one. Most likely to be tagged on Trader Joe's Instagram. You could also say most likely to be the subject of a Trader Joe's themed TikTok too, because on social media, people love tagging Trader Joe's in their charcuterie platters because that's having a moment. It is so much cheese. And as new cheeses have come out, I feel like the new ones have the visual medium of Instagram or TikTok or whatever in mind because it was like a green goddess Gouda and it was green flake. And then the scotch bonnet pepper one that was beautiful and red looking, oh, that one tasted really gross. And then they even had a breath that was in the shape of like a flower. And it was beautiful. And I was thinking, this is no coincidence. They've really stepped it up and they're and they have all the other accoutrements you need for your charcuterie plate like the most affordable marcona almonds, which I really shiny and salty and so yummy. And all kinds of salamis that are already pre rolled and it's charcuterie heaven in there. This I love Trader Joe's cheese section, but my favorite cheese is a boring triangle, New Amsterdam Gouda, I got it every single time. It is salty and awesome. Not the Irish Cheddar or Scottish Cheddar. I don't know, the Cheddar's Cheddar, but the one I always get is that Gouda, it's more consistent in my life.

"When you say some products are commissioned, does that mean that Trader Joe's comes up with the idea? We want to make everything but the bagel seasoning and then they go and find another company to do it. I want to say yes, but they're so secretive about how they work that I don't can't point to a source, but yeah, that's my understanding is that they have a creative team that are ideating and seeking out products because some of them all kind of fit in with that thing. There's so many everything but the bagel, everything about the whatever. The latest one was that everything but the leftover seasoning blend and it is like a seasoning one that just tastes like Thanksgiving, which I loved. I thought that was really Willy Wonka and fun. Oh, so fun. It's kind of like our stuffing biscuits where you use the flavors of one thing. Just like that. And it is worth mentioning, though, that this process doesn't always make those other vendors happy. There was just a story in grub street reporting that Trader Joe's was in conversation with this Indian condiment company called Brooklyn Delhi, their products are fantastic. We love them here at VA and they were talking about private labeling and they didn't end up making a deal, but as the article reported, recently, Trader Joe's launched a pretty nearly identical product with some serious overlap in branding. So there's definitely a flip side to their kind of voracious trend watching and copycatting that not every small business owner is happy about. It is an amazing experience though to see how trends proliferate through Trader Joe's, like one thing becomes popular and then three other versions of it, spring up. Once the frozen cauliflower gnocchi took off, then there was the kale gnocchi, which far inferior in my opinion. We'll talk about yogi later. We'll fight about gnocchi later bags. So we talked a little bit about this before. I think your reviews make it seem like Trader Joe's is this Emporium of endless choice. But when you actually go into Trader Joe's, you're not seeing a million products. There's actually kind of a limited selection for a lot of pantry Staples. Yes. And I think the number is hard to nail down because every store is a different size, but there's around three or 4000 SKUs, which is just like different products in a Trader Joe's store when there might be 30,000 at a bigger supermarket. So that's a huge difference. And yet they are wildly successful without offering people the same amount of choice. Yeah. And the prices are just so incredibly affordable that people really rely on that store in a really loyal to it. There's only around 500 Trader Joe's in the United States. You know, there's, I think, 5000 walmarts or more. So it makes it feel extra special. This boutique experience. I started shopping there because I was a broke college student and kept shopping there because I worked in publishing in New York. So I've always been a loyal shopper because the price is above all and then second because I like snacks. Let's talk about some of these products. Okay, my body is ready. But not your mind. That's just gonna come as it does. So we've got to come. All right, most likely to be invited to every party. The most likely to be invited to every party because I've probably brought it to every party. Are the alote chips? Oh my God. Yes. Which I know you love because I probably brought them to your parties. So you're getting like zingy yummy spices on this very dippable big old Frito. And they're amazing. They're so good. I think this product is really the epitome of something that Trader Joe's does so well, which is convince people who think they don't eat junk food to buy junk food in just math quantities because these are no better for you than a Frito. But we buy them all the time. This is the epitome of Trader Joe's making products that bring me joy. Yes. They're great. Okay. Let's stay on the junk food train. Most likely to be better than the original that they're like a riff on. I can't remember if they came out last year or the year before because all of my reviews are a blur now, but the saddle potato crisps are obviously Pringles. They're fantastic and they have this creepy green faced guy and checkerboard pants riding the chip like a Bronco on the canister. And that's unnerving, but once you get past that, they're very good. I love those. I usually snag a can of those when I'm picking up other stuff. Yeah. Okay, most likely to make an appearance at your wedding. I'll never get married, but I feel like this is an inside joke I have in my reviews because there's so much wedding food at Trader Joe's, all the little bites, like appetizer, party cocktail party bites. However, I think the best thing to have at your wedding from Trader Joe's are the mini sheet cakes and there's one in chocolate. It's got a chocolate ganache, frosting and the other is vanilla chantilly cream, which is like sounds so dainty. And they're moist and great. It's bigger than a cupcake, but not a huge cake, so it's the kind of cake you buy at the grocery store when it's not your birthday and you wish it was. Right. People DM me a lot when the reviews come out and somebody wants to tell me that they loved the sheet cake so much that they tracked down the baker who made them and had them do a full size wedding sheet cake. So I loved that. And I also like the little mini mousse cakes that they change every season. But we have to go back to the part about how we track down the baker from the notoriously hard Trader Joe's that have been would admit that there was a baker, let alone, you can do it. You can sleuth..

"High food people, it's Amanda Shapiro, your host, and senior staff writer Alex beggs has been reviewing Trader Joe's products since the dawn of time. Well, maybe only like four years. But in that time, she's waited in countless Trader Joe's lines, sampled countless dips, sauces, drinks, chocolates, cookies, frozen delights, all of it, all in the name of helping us navigate those just distraction inducing grocery aisles. And as she leaves her full-time post at BA, we thought it was only fitting to reflect on this and ask, what are the best and worst Trader Joe's products of all time? And why does this one store have such a hold on us still after all these years? What I do know is that it's the new year and you are at least until the end of this week, senior staff writer, Alex beggs. Yes. Is it the end of this week? And my first freelance assignment is Trader Joe's reviews for January. So don't say Trader Joe's had hired you. And now I am trying to Joe himself. No, I actually would love to write their copy, but it's unlike any other grocery store they don't hire outsiders. Everything is internal. They birth prices. They birth their own copywriters in a lab in Trader Joe's. Yes. So, I mean, if anyone were to be hired as a copyright or a Trader Joe's, I feel like it should be you because you've been writing these Trader Joe's reviews for BA now for how long? I think for a year? 2018 was the first year I did it and the time has just flown by. It's the longest column you've ever wrote and it's probably the longest continuous column that BA has ever published. Yeah, and I've had a lot of fun doing it and I can't imagine a world where I'm not doing it because I'm never not excited to walk through those automatic doors. What does it feel like relatively consistently going to Trader Joe's and buying every single new product for that month? What even goes into that? How do you know what products you need to buy? Right. So you asked about my writers processes with my Paris review interview. Let me tell you about it, Amanda. I rely on their website, which is kind of janky and they recently redid it and it's slightly better now. So they have announcements of new products there. So I'll start making a grocery list and I have it in the notes app so that I can share it with my partner Bill when we're in the store so we can team up and get everything. Ah, so you have a partner in crime. And it's so fun. And you know in New York, one person had to be in line the entire time I was shopping while I run around the store getting everything. So you have to shop with a partner. The joy of Trader Joe's in New York City. Yeah. What's interesting about Trader Joe's is the constant product drop. There's always new stuff. And because of that, they'll test out new products in certain markets before other places. So I'll go in to that specific store because I know they'll have lots of good new stuff that I hadn't seen online yet. And I'm just like, you know, filling my cart and people are looking at me like, oh my God, why is she getting the Allie lose? They think you're like a super fan. Or worse like an Instagram influencer. But there are a lot of them who are amazing. They'll go online and I'll see what the different Trader Joe's influencers are getting. They're way more lovable to Trader Joe's than I am. I think I have a little more skepticism. It's a tough love. There's tough love there. You've been in a relationship for a very long time. At this point, you just know they're not all hits. Yeah, and I'm writing to both be a service to my Friends, but also to entertain people. So when I first started writing them, carrying my editor would say things like you can only compare food to fingernails once a year. Like it can't get too gross, but sometimes the food is quite gross. I feel like that has really made you spread your wings and expand your metaphors in a really creative ways over the years. Oh, shoot, thanks. So you go into the store, you get all the new products, and then over the course of what a couple weeks, you're just stuffing your face with different Trader Joe's items. Oh, I wish it was a couple of weeks. I'm usually doing this pretty close to deadline, so it'll be a crazy weekend. And I will have a night. We'll call it like Trader Joe's knight, and I'll have my Friends over, and I'll try and cook in many of the things as possible. You know, you're just eating like 5 different frozen appetizers and we used to do it in the office where I would bring everything in from Trader Joe's and everyone would stand around. It tasted with me. But now I get to do that with my friends. So they kind of help me be like, this is bad, right? Is this amazing? The pumpkin spice hummus this year is kind of surprisingly good. Oh my God, really? Yeah, once you try and forget that it's beans you're eating. It's just kind of cinnamon sugar tasting dip. So if you don't think about it as hummus, I get that. If you think of it as frosting, which is what I did. This episode is all about superlatives. So we're going to talk about a range of the highs and the lows and in betweens. But what are the most interesting things you've come to realize about Trader Joe's over the time that you've been doing these reviews? What can you tell our audience who may not be the Trader Joe's stand that you are that so many others are? Well, congrats to them for having life. But I think the biggest misconception and one that I had when I first started writing these was that there was Trader Joe's test kitchen where they're cooking up breaded fried frozen raviolis and truffle stuffed gnocchi, both of which I really loved. But that's just not the case. I'd have to double check this number, but a majority of the products are private label, which means they're seeking them out from other companies. And then some of them I think they're commissioning. So I think the biggest misconception is that you're buying a product made by this company, Trader Joe's, when in fact you're buying foods from companies from all over the world and all over the country that have made deals with Trader Joe's and then Trader Joe's has an in-house art team that creates these adorable upbeat friendly packaged, wonderfully designed snacks that make it all seem harmonious and fun. Like going to Disneyland or something and seeing all your favorite characters on the shelves. You know, you got a whole foods and like the new foods are cool and serious and sleek and they're also well designed, but it's too well designed. Yeah. I don't feel like I fit in there. Like I'm a little weird. I feel more at home at Trader Joe's. And maybe that's because I spend so much time there..

"Joe's just went ahead and made it on their own and they felt that that wasn't the coolest thing it would be nice to see them work with more small brands and try to help them out. They could do. You have any thoughts about that petition. Last year to change traderjoes packaging. I thought that was really interesting. I followed that when it was happening for those who don't know what that was all about. There was a young woman named brioni fidel. I that's how you say her name and she had started a petition to get trader joe's to change some of its packaging that she felt was racially insensitive and have to say. I think she was corrected you that they were smart to change the packaging they. It's just much better off. They call it trader. Joe's across the board okay. So you walked into the trader joe's in brooklyn for the first time. What was your overall impression. They make grocery shopping fun and they play up the quirky factor. A lot of people think grocery shopping as a chore but it does not seem like a chore trader. Joe's gathered you a really good job at getting people excited to try stuff. Why do you think you've never really shopped there before. Oh that's a good question. I don't think trader joe's came to new york until maybe a decade ago. You know i own some restaurants. I dated a chef for a long time. So i probably didn't grocery shop as much as the average person i love my farmers markets. You know we have a big whole foods here. That i'll go to and i mean you've seen the street that i live on. We've got a lot of little food stores. And i do love to frequent. You know the small businesses in my neighborhood. So that's probably why so carry. The big question here is. Do you think you're going to go back. I do think i'll go back. I mean you. You definitely caught with the peppermint products. I do love peppermint. I like peppermint more than pumpkin. So i'll go back during the holiday time in. Check that out a little nervous about buying too many snacks. I mean trader. Joe's is really sexy snack headquarters so you have to be careful of not going overboard with the snacks. But i think also just is a member of the food media. It's really really interesting to see what people are buying trader. Joe's does a great job staying on top of trends so it's fun to literally. Just walk around and look at all the labels and see what they put out. So yeah i'll go back. Maybe jenna next california you and i can go together of course then we can actually see what a real. Tj's alcohol section looks like. We can buy the mango sparkling wine and we can have lava cakes and we will have a great time awesome jenna. Thanks for taking this trader. Joe's journey with me. I'm so glad that we got to do that together. It was really fun me to. You're the bomb. That's it for today. Show thank you to everyone who gave us product suggestions on instagram. I tried a few more products since. Jenna and i recorded this. The frozen oatmeal. Admittedly it was delicious with a perfect texture and not too much sweetness. I am not a fan of sweet oatmeal. But i don't need oatmeal pucks wrapped in plastic. I don't think anyone does so. I say skip. That product made a big batch of oatmeal and reheat it throughout the week. The specula- butter is almost too good. I might have to hide it away. So i stopped eating it by the spoonful. My cat dusty. Gobble down the trader joe's version of fancy feast so paws up for that the super lemon room spritz skip it. It smells like furniture polish. Sorry and you might laugh at this but you know what my favorite thing is so far. The unscented hand embody green with moroccan argon oil. Obviously it's not edible but it's a really good product and as we as i record this. I have water boiling. So i can make the corn and barada ravioli for dinner. I have high hopes for that product. Thank you to our assistant. Producer genocide do for engineering this episode and sharing her love for traderjoes. Thank you to carry gold makers of great butter and cheese and to.

Joe's or i'm there whenever i run out of lava cakes so three times a week. Wow okay you are irregular. What is a lava cake. I is that the same as a molten chocolate cats. It's warm cut it open and it oozes out with chocolate garage delicious yum yum. okay Where else do you grocery shop or shop for food. If i'm getting produce fruits and veggies i go to my local farmer's market which is about a mile away from me but everything else bread eggs frozen food desert alcohol. That's all at tj's otj's and tell us who called the teachers. I think californians only call. Tj's but it might just be me. When did you fall in love with trader. Joe's i fell in love with trader joe's in college. It was really cheap way for me and my roommates to get food. We would walk down. The smallest trader. Joe's in the world is actually in boston where i went to school so we would go. There have a great time into brilliant experience. What did you find. Different about. The brooklyn trader joe's that we visited a versus the ones. You love california. The brooklyn trader. Joe's was beautiful. It was in an old bank building. It had a high ceiling chandeliers. The people there were so happy. What the alcohol section was a little lackluster in comparison to california stories will definitely you can't sell wine. In new york city supermarkets. He might not have known that so. There was no two buck chuck. Which is the famous trader. Joe's inexpensive wine. So i did. I've yet to try to buck chuck. But maybe when i come out to california jenner. You also told me about this. Try before you buy thing the trader joe's has yes trader. Joe's if you're unsure about putting something in your cart you can actually ask an employee to slice it open and you can try it anything. Besides the frozen food and dairy products. I believe in the meats. Of course the uncooked meets. You can just ask anybody to try it That sounds like there's a high potential for abuse. Oh absolutely and every week do you feel guilty and have to buy everything when you ask them to open it can shining ask. Sometimes sometimes i would feel guilty and buy everything and the building you talked about. I should have jumped in and mentioned it's a bank building that was built in nineteen twenty three so it definitely was a fancy trader. Joe's my next question for you. Janet is trader. Joe's a cult absolutely trader. Joe's fans try and get other people to be trader joe's fans so it's definitely That's what i'm trying to do right now. It's it's working somewhat okay janice since we have verified that you are a cult member. I'd like to know your three favorite trader joe's products so let's start with number three coming in at number three carry. I think it would be the mangoes. Sparkling wine hung cans and it's four dollars okay. It's fun little cocktail an account. I wouldn't have thought combining mango and wine. But hey why not okay. Number two number two. Is there chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich. Is that like a chip which it's exactly like a chip which accept the texture is beyond better. Okay all right now about number one drum roll please k. Number one has to be their chicken. Some says they're delicious. That your favorite. How do you would you eat them with anything. Their next crispy. The relief labor holders spiced inside and have them with a little bit of saracho in catch-up perfect. Okay got your own catch-up blend going on there. I can appreciate that. All right. So jenna Did a little trader. Joe's homework for us in studied up on the history of trader. Joe's jenna who founded trader traderjoes. Joe coolum founded trader joe's in nineteen sixty seven. He opened up the. I rejoice store what was behind it. Why did he open this sort of interesting different kind of grocery store he really wanted a tiki. Themed caribbean deemed grocery store where people can find inexpensive food and drink definitely different from the traditional grocery store. Where was the first trader joe's location in pasadena california southern. How many locations do they have today. And in how many countries you can only trader joe's in the united states and there's about five hundred five hundred thirty locations. Oh okay that's more locations than i thought and i for some reason i thought they were international. Maybe i thought that because trader joe's is owned by that german grocery company aldy from saying that correctly but so us only okay. Good to know next. Janet and i are going to talk about some other trader joe's product prior to visiting the trader joe's. I'd never stepped into a trader joe's. But i definitely knew about some of their products and we are going to try one of those products. Right now it is there speculators cookie butter spread definitely one of their most famous products. Are you jenna. i am a fan. But only after one spoonful. That's all i can well. I didn't even know what cookie. Butter is so had to look it up on wikipedia. Thankyou wikipedia but according to wikipedia. Cookie butter was invented in belgium. In two thousand and two. So it hasn't been around that long it's made of cookie crumbs fat sugar and flowers. So it's definitely not a health food mixed until it becomes spreadable. So i'm guessing jenna. This is like a belgian new tele. Yes it is like about new. Okay all right so i'm going to split. I got a spoon right here. Do i need some milk or water or something to go with. We just let your saliva break down really get all on your teeth leads. The texture is crazy textures crazy. Okay it i'm guessing. It tastes like peanut butter now. It is very comparable to peanut butter. Yes.

"We are coming to you from a different location for this episode. Because we did a field trip for today's show we went to the trader joe's and cobble hill brooklyn. Because i have never shopped at a trader joe's until the other day i was a trader joe's virgin. I know i know hard to believe. I told one of my friends. We were doing this episode. And she said. Are you sure you want to admit that everyone. It's like saying you've never used the telephone well too late here we go. Let's grab a shopping cart and hit those aisles. I let's thank our sponsor carry gold the folks behind that beautiful butter and cheese made with milk from irish grass-fed cows. I have met some of those cows and they get degrees in some of the most beautiful greenfield's you've ever seen if you haven't tried carry gold. Be sure to pick some up at your favorite supermarket speaking of cheese. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the cheese ball last week. We had a fun night of fashion and for maggi. And we're joined by marissa mullen of that cheese plate and cheese by numbers who taught us how to make a beautiful cheese board that included her signature salami river. I now know how to make us. Salami river watch out world. We ate lots of yummy cheese from our friends at carry gold cambozola and cypress grove. We drank beautiful sparkling wine from mumm napa and we had some chocolate bonbons with cheese in them from voege shackle la. Oh and parmesan ice cream from cafe. Pana how could i forget so interesting. It all took place at the demo kitchen at the new ace hotel brooklyn. If you'd like to stay at the ace. Be sure to use the code cherry. Be for fifteen percent off when you make your booking. That's cherry and the letter b. Alright so trader. Joe's i know it's kind of crazy that i have never shopped at a trader joe's. I made that confession on my instagram account and on cherry bombs instagram. And hundreds of you gave us your product. Suggestions was honestly a little overwhelming but fun to read through them all some immediate takeaways from my visit. The trader joe's copywriters and packaging designers are geniuses. They make their products very very desirable. What else when it comes to the intersection of fun and price point. It's hard to beat traderjoes. They have definitely cornered the market on grocery shopping as affordable entertainment. One thing that mystified me is the perception that exists trader. Joe's as healthy so many people kept telling me the trader. Joe's is all about healthy food. I mean yes. They have plenty of healthy things to eat. But the produce section is underwhelming and there are snacks everywhere and really sexy snacks so you are very tempted to buy them. Oh my gosh and pumpkin products. If you think starbucks pushes it with the pumpkin spice latte. You haven't seen anything trader joe's really jumps on a trend and rides it in this case writing a big pumpkin. So here are some snippets. We recorded on our visit to trader. I'll be right back with genocide. Do assistant producer of radio. Cherry bomb jenner is a member of gen z. A recent college graduate and she's serving as my trader joe's ambassador. I everybody so. I am at a traitor. Does for the very first time of crowded. I came at night. Because when i passed by jackson day their lives and i am going to go out all the products that has recommended to me. Let's go here's some of the stuff that everybody loves all these dips. They have a lot of seasonal stuff. Right that's what you love. Katherine loves the mediterranean style hamas. Oh pumpkin spice on this. I'm not sure that i'm ready for that gang when you thank you. Pumpkin four cheese greek style yogurt dip. That could be interesting. Okay maybe we'll come back and get that and then oh cacciatore peppy ravioli. That sounds really good. They have a lot of ravioli. There's lots of prison through. Which is great if he like making smoothies except they're just cookies and candy everywhere. So if you came here because you're wanting to do some healthy things and it comes movies. You might not appreciate. The are just sweets everywhere. Blueberry goat cheese that went viral blueberry vanilla. Oh boy blueberry vanilla coach again not sure about that but people love that people love it so now in front of the prison tumbling section and so many of you mentioned that you love the frozen dumplings. Sporkes remind chicken shuai. They got a little clean down of the dumplings by. Maybe i will buy some of those. Oh they've soup dumplings that's funny angle. Try those but they also had feet bus soup. Wonton soup french onion soup steak and south pies. You may have every crazy. So like i said they are really nuts for pumpkin stuff. There is pumpkin spice coffee for actual pumpkin. There's pumpkin this humping viola hump and hamas pumpkin beauty cada on and on. I saw a lot of other pumpkin things. I'll spare you all the pump and stuff all right then right in front of me. Apparently this is a famous trader. Joe's thing to the cinnamon wisc of no the cinnamon broom. So it's like a broom. Scented with cinnamon oils three dollars. Ninety nine cents and it says broom is made in china but it is scented in america. Okay and then. There's a smaller one. There's a with cinnamon sense with his for ninety nine cents bring home and enjoy the smell of fall. Think my pass on this. But it's an interesting product that i've never seen anything like that before. The lady in front of me has the senate who broom and her young child is using it as a weapon so she's trying to wrestle it away from the kid. Oh they also have gluten free pumpkin spice bagels. Okay i'm gonna turn to pumpkin before. I leave trader. Joe's that seems to be the clear message more pumpkin gang. Look organic private-label gets. Oh wow they also have pumpkin spice coffee. I will stop calling out all the pumpkin things because they think this whole episode could wind up being pumpkin stuff trader. Joe's okay. I'm back with jenna jenna how are you. I'm good. i'm so good carry. It is so good to see you. So jenna is here to talk to me. All about trader. Joe's because jonah is definitely not a trader joe's virgin jenna just to be transparent with our listeners. You are a trader. Joe's superfan right. Yes one of the biggest. How often do you shop there. I shop there. You can buy me there. Every sunday night at local trader. Joe's or i'm there whenever i run out of lava cakes so three times a week. "There's a quasi moly. There's a caramelized onion dip from trader. Joe's live beyond that. This is the thing so and then there's also cold kala flower and there's broccoli khuda tastes so to speak and then there's also pretzels in the you know the bread warmer. Your parents eighty thousand years old. Yeah so they have a bread warmer. I know the presses are so when i walk in i see the whole spread. My dad's sitting in a chair. He's eating a pretzel. So now i'm reminded of the pretzel that's in the warming drawer. Okay what the fuck am. I going to choose in that situation. I'm hungry ass. you pick well. Did you have the bar you had him have. The bar didn't have the i the bar. And that's what i've been doing but that because we because of the timing again the scheduling. We're eating at six thirty here. So i'm like it's four thirty four i can push it. It was my thought. But i can't fuck and push it never even when i've learned i haven't learned i. Yeah go ahead. You know you shouldn't push it in. That situation could just eight eleven. It's now been five hours that that's the situation. Where like. I wonder if he would have the bar. How you would have hand on thirty six years old and i'm still fucking learning this shit. That isn't going to be so depressed. 'cause i didn't have the bar. I came in the house. "That you that is like a natural roasted sweetness that comes out at on the texture of the macaroni is really good. Well it's not. She getting some sage classic fall herbs here. What do you think of the the air fire qualities. Now done in ten minutes crunchy scrape. I mean i like anything. Tried is pretty tasty and quickly as even better know what. I'm sold on needing a whole new lions at home. But all think chang thank you so much for joining us for talking us through a couple of these new products and for making a really delicious stick anytime. There's those are tasty okay. So here's what we have left. So let's look at the list check twice from ninety coffee. Yeah let's do coffee. It should be just arriving in stores as this. Podcast is launching in. It's part of our small lot coffee program. It's called indonesia. Bali kintu mani and it comes from a an indonesian village on the island of bali called dow saga and it's really born out of a shift in mindset. When we come across something that we love we want as much of it as possible because we want customers to be able to experience it for as long as they want to and that shift in mindset came about when we started realizing that that was limiting and rather than skip that entirely in never bring those to market. We thought we'd try it and it's really turned into an interesting program where we literally are moving around the coffee growing belt around the world And and just able to showcase these really great coffee introduced me to a whole lot of coffees that i'd never would have had the opportunity to taste. Otherwise this one's just a nice solid rich cup of coffee If you are in stores and it's september and you walk past that new product shelf or an area like the coffee section. You'll see a really bold bag. Lots of bright colors and simple shapes. And that's that keen to monte coffee all right now. We've talked t we've talked coffee. What goes really well with coffee cream. Okay what else goes really well with coffee cup. No you would not be very good at gameshows. I'm talking about cookies. A biscardi would be nice. Tell me about that. Maple syrup is certainly not new. But we've been looking for thinking about new ways to get maple flavor in places other than the breakfast table and what we came up with. Are these mini. Maple walnut biscardi. And they really are. When i just said there little biscardi they do have one nice. Walnuts and walnut sometimes lend a needed counterpoint. to sweetness bunny opened about. I love to give those a taste. Thurs the requisite safety seal. That's what safety sounds like. I'm grabbing the one with the most drizzle on maple just smells like breakfast to me but that does smell sort of like a french toast biscardi. All right here we go. You cannot eat scotty and sneak up on people or biscardi in the library. No way that's why biscardi was not one of the weapons in the game clue because you would have found them out right away but some biscardi are hard enough as to be dangerous. So that's true and these are not. I think that's important to note some biscardi if you don't dunk them in coffee they're impossible to eat without feeling like you're gonna break your teeth. These are not those discarded. those are delicious That's coming fall right. So it's probably end of september early october the chiming for that. For those mini maple walnut visconti okay. Let's keep going on our fall shopping. List what's next another beverage. This is from the shell house. That brand of spiked sensors hard seltzer containing alcohol. This is a pumpkin spice. Seltzer water if you look at these there there about one hundred calories in a can right there. Five percent alcohol which is about the same as a as a a lower alcohol beer right and they're gluten free a few years ago this this entire category of product didn't even exist and now there are seasonal flavor is coming in and out and it's just something new to try and experience and then move onto the next seasonal flavor and i think after that we haven't oh tanenbaum spike seltzer That tastes like a tree. I don't have that one. i'm not ready. The seltzer tastes like sleigh bells. Oh goodness gracious matt. We are coming towards the end of our list. There's something on this list. That i fell so in love with when it came to the tasting panel. These are the apple cinnamon oatmeal bites. Visually eerily similar to those butternut squash. Mac and cheese bites. It's apple cinnamon oatmeal. But it's wrapped it's made into a ball and breaded on the outside frozen and then you put it in the oven or the air fire or the toaster oven or any of those places and you can just take it with you. They're almost like little oatmeal fritters. So these will be in our freezer case. Not just for the fall but moving forward as well. What's next this friends in. Podcast land is trader. Joe's thanksgiving pie.

"We are going to do. A deep dive into the history of jamaican food. And i am very pleased to welcome. Virginia burke to the show. I feel so lucky that i snagged her. Because she is the authority on jamaican culinary history. Virginia wrote to cookbooks. Caribbean and walkers would caribbean kitchen and she spent over twenty years. Working with walkers would caribbean foods jamaican cuisine. As a result of hundreds of years of colonization. When a country planted its flag and jamaican soil. They brought their cuisine along with them. Not to mention the food of the enslaved people that they brought along to run their plantations but virginia says the very first people to live in jamaica or the tainos. I'm they actually came from south america and they use canoes and traveled all the way through the islands and made their way as far as jamaica. They were here. A few hundred years before. Christopher columbus arrived in fourteen ninety four and they grow their own food. Corn and cassava sweet potatoes guavas finals were indigenous to jamaica tool so when christopher columbus arrived the story goes that the titles presented him with pineapples on. That's how they became a symbol of hospitality. High enough eliza very important part of our our beginnings. It's actually on our coat of arms. In the sixteenth century the spanish arrived with citrus and livestock and a population of spanish jews. Who brought esque each of vinegar fish that remains a jamaican classic five hundred years later in the seventeenth century. The british arrived and through the spaniards out the spaniards left and went to cuba and when they were leaving they freed are all their livestock and they freed their slaves. These freed slaves took off and went into the mountains of jamaica. They were called the maroons. They were from west africa and they refuse to be recaptured by the british. Who wanted to reinstate them and add them to the numbers of slaves that they had the british you slaves to work their sugar plantations. So these escaped enslaved west africans. The maroons were hiding from the british enduring. This time out of survival invented jamaica's most famous dish jerk. They would hunt the wild pigs. They needed a cooking method that they could use food while they were on the run and they wouldn't have all these fires that the british could see smoke going up into the sky so they developed the cooking. Method called jerking which required putting the pimenta. Awards pimento is what you call space. That liners are fire. Pit with stones and mental would and wrap the pig in all these spices and some leaves called pepper elder and it would be highly spiced and they'd bury it in there and how they would the colts from the would cook it for several hours than they could break it up and carry it with them in these little pouches. But we didn't know anything about this. Wonderful jerk food until after emancipation so we went through quite a long period of time with the british and all their their sugar plantations and of course they developed rum and sugar that was being sent back at made a fortune for people in britain in sixteen eighty seven a british botanist named sirhan. Sloan made a major culinary contribution while living in jamaica. He collected all kinds of plant clippings. And he he discovered. The coco was indigenous to jamaica. And he didn't like the way they made chocolate here. They cacao it was just bitter bitter drink on. He added milk to it. I'm that's how we got the creation of milk chocolate than he patented it and and cabras took it and ran with it and the rest is history so we also had the genesis of chocolate milk. Chocolate here in jamaica. Virginia said the british didn't like the climate in jamaica. It was too hot for them so they sent over poor irish welsh and cornish people to oversee the work happening on the plantations but they brought all their food. They brought their cornish. Pasties which is a turnover is essentially but then they jamaicans turned it into a mate. Patty and it's highly spiced but almost every jamaican schoolchild is a at least once a week for lunch. I mean we're not even just school children. But i mean any body. We will love having a for lunch. And so it's it's it's a big part of our diet. That's definitely one of the most popular foods this makes so much sense. If you've ever seen jamaican patty. It is suddenly so obvious that it is the jamaican version of a cornish. Patty another thing. The british enjoyed in jamaica. Avocado toast lady. Nugent was the wife of the governor of jamaica and eighteen or one eighty five. I believe and she wrote a journal which is absolutely fascinating logging sort of food. That was served avocados one of the things that they used to call midshipmen's butter 'cause they spread it on bread. Now you know that's very popular nowadays. But they've been doing this for a long time so maybe it was the original host. Go okay so we have the spanish. The british irish and cornish influences. And then the french fled to jamaica. After the haitian revolution on this actually started the jamaican coffee industry which grew to be one of the biggest in the world at the time. Because we have the elevation for coffee today. Grown here we have some of the world's best coffee blue mountain coffee in the nineteenth century after emancipate in the british brought in hakka chinese laborers to replace the recently freed slaves They brought to us. Of course every jamaican and most people around the world yusei sauce in all their cooking so that was one of the big gift so they brought. They open many many chinese restaurants around jamaica. So jamaica familiar with it. It's a treat. It's sort of a sunday sunday lunch. Treat if you're going for lunch or something. You'd gorka chinese restaurant. Do jamaicans use the sauce as an ingredient in the food that bay cook or when making chinese food at home or eleanor braided in. Don't it's used sort of to make gravies for anything. It's you'll find a even combined with jerk things one of the things. That mean a chinese person to tell you that that the jamaicans changed the chinese flavor we have what we call jamaican chinese food because every restaurant you go to now they will serve you the size sauce with the scotch bonnet pepper koto and put in the song that you can then pour liberally all over your chinese food to heat at all. That's our own way of doing things. And they they created quite a few dishes here. I'm sure you wouldn't find back in china. If you think that that is the end of foreign influence on jamaican cuisine. You are wrong. After the chinese came the indians they brought with them their special gifts curry jamaican curry all the time. Now every week we have our own west indian curry. They brought the calendar which are greens. They brought danja. Which of course is unimportant. Plant to us I did not know that marijuana was from.

Overcoming Emotional Eating and Ditching Diets With Shari Broder

"I think that's something we sometimes we don't know. Am i hungry. Am i do. I need water. Am i board. Do i need a break. How can we really tune in and figure out if it's a hunger cue verses i need something emotionally or just something else in my life. Yeah well people easily first of all in our culture we don't really think about hunger and eating we don't associate the to. I mean obviously people think i'm hungry. I need to eat something but so many people do so much more than that without you know they eat. Because there's free samples at trader joe's or there's not any more from But you know or because they're at a party or because somebody put candy in the candy bowl. There's so many reasons that people eat. Now that were. They don't even think about whether they're hungry and advertising psycho. You know get a pizza and just call this number. And we don't think about hunger and then on top of that. I it sometimes is hard. Especially if that's been your orientational to just not associate. Eating and hunger is distinguishing between physical hunger. And what. I call head hunger. Which is when your brain's telling you eat something and for a lot of people that's hard. It's hard to distinguish but it really is. Hunger is a physical sensation. And maybe you. And i may experience it differently or not but you really need to get to know it and it's sort of like you have to urinate. Nobody has to tell you just know. It's a feeling right and so you go to the bathroom. Well hunger the same way but people just some people haven't experienced a long time and so they got what it feels like. It makes a lotta sense. Because i think we use food in so many different ways and in this country many of ice have access to food at any time that we think we might want it and so i think a lot of times. It really isn't that question it's just well. It's the time of day that i eat. Yup or you know this thing is happening in my life. I want celebrate. Or i am sad and i need to enjoy the pint of ice cream. Or what have you know even past that point of the physical discomfort because because it fills a wade supposedly you know for something that we feel that we

Dumping Our HeadTrash and Ending Self-Sabotage with Renie Cavallari

"Love to know what is head trash. Well head trash you know what head trashes because we all have had trashed. It's those nasty little voices in our heads that are undermining us and they They can be self destructive they be limiting and they're they're not really enhancing your thoughts so they really hold you back and because they hold you back. They limit your potential and worse yet. They limit the joy in your life. You know so when you think about the quality of your life as a definition for me success to me is joy so the more joy the better life and the moorhead trashed the less joy. I think that's a great philosophy. And i could not agree more. What inspired you to write about had trash so over the last twenty plus years working with a power by fire and then the art institute the it. I have always been intrigued by like i. I just. I love being around plum. I've always found great joy and helping people succeed and and find their potential and there was this need to understand that if you're going to help someone improve their life improve the performance of their work or improve the quality of their life. Life work balance. Which i in my opinion is bullshit. There is no thing. Never incomplete balancing anything. It's just life balance and when we try and figure out what that with the balanced looks like. We really started to zero in on that the most important thing we can do for ourselves is to have the right mindset and so a lot of times like we. Let's just take something silly like gardening. It doesn't matter. If you learn the skills of gardening you can learn the process of when to plant. How much fertilizer to us. And what all those kinds of cool things. I like to garden. It's it's helps clear my head. You can look at all those things but if you don't like to garden or you're not interested in gardening or it you you don't have the right attitude towards gardening. It's like you know flowers are nice. I'll buy a plant from trader joe's. Stick it on my then. That's okay but you'll never really going to be a great gardener so it doesn't matter how much you read about it if it doesn't if it doesn't really enhance your soul like get go in mindset is first and that's would intrigue me about head trashes that the limit for most people isn't that they can't do something it's that there's talk in their head their cell talk that limits what they're thinking and most important about understanding head trash is that you feel the way you think so s comes before t so you control your thoughts and when you control those thoughts you'll have different feelings but if you think poorly about something you're going to feel poorly about it if you think about the possibilities of something you're gonna feel different. And that's going to motivate you so when people say to me riney. I just don't have my motivation right now. Well what are you thinking about. Because if you're thinking just don't have my motivation right now. It's going to be really hard to find your motivation. I think i needed to have this conversation because you know. During time with the pandemic finding motivation can certainly be a little more challenging and shifting perspective. Absolutely at when i was growing up my father used to say who you hang with is who you become and because environment does matter and so during this pandemic we've been isolated and we haven't had the natural energy give and take with you know the people that bring us joy in our life or or the collaboration and this is really caused really an epidemic in head trash like we have a serious challenge for people with head trash and that could be your job. It could be how you're spending your time. It can be as a leader. you know their. It's imprinting all over us. Absolutely and how would you say i think it manifests itself in so many different ways for all of us. How does head trash affect us from day to day. Well head trashes happening all the time. And if you think of your brain as almost two two brains at one you have this this actual physical brain. That's a functioning brain and it has you know it can. Primary tool is blood and it talks to organs in it and it is the intellectual side things and then you have this emotional brain and your emotional brain is it's actually a derivative of your thoughts and how you think and so any given time in your day an event happens and it could be as simple as someone cuts you off or someone smiles at you or could be more significant like you had an upset with your boss or appear let you down or you know your partner is making you nuts. 'cause you're in the same small space right. It could be anything and what happens. It goes into this emotional brain and decides whether it's gonna go to the disconnected side of your emotional brain or the connected side so this emotional brain actually has two sides and that's what determines how you're gonna feel because it goes to the side where your thoughts are so if you're thinking like for a lot of us you know where we're at home and you know all of a sudden for people you know whether you have kids or like even a big space seems to be getting smaller and smaller so if we think you're driving me nuts and we get angry or we we get really kind of anal about kind of things that are silly because we're stressed all that stress is living in that disconnected side of your emotional brain and the goal of life is to spend as much time as possible on the connected side because the connected side is where we have clarity of thought. We are productive. We we actually breed. Our physical wellness is over on that connected side. We take care of ourselves. We have the ability to deal with complex problems. So it's not that we don't have disappointments but it's how we deal with them and that's determined by which side of the brain on the disconnected side. We might feel anxiety or worry or outright. Fear we might. We're telling ourselves live. This is where you know that self talk like you can't fall asleep at night right. It's like it just will not be. It's like a like a chipmunk that will not stop talking. You know well your goal is to learn how to actively and proactively spend as much time on that connected side because you can't stop things from happening. Events happen all sign. It's how we react to the event and how we embrace them that determines the quality of our life.

Trader Joe's Seeds the Conversation About Plants & Plant-Based Products

"Plants and plant based products are certainly in these days. I remember the time when if you put the word vegan on a package it could actually hurt its sales. I swear there are things that we put the word vegan that afterwards. We're like what we do that because we killed it but maybe in the last five years in certainly more intensely in the last couple of years. We've seen this tremendous increase in customer interest for plant based foods. We have a new guest on the podcast today. I m amy. I am a category manager of a few different categories within our store deli fresh beverage and meet meatless an seafood in the frozen set. You head a lot of plant based things that are kind of obviously plant faced right like like the the juice shots for example you also manage what we call these meat analogues. The turkey lists protein patties and the protein patties. They don't say beef louis but there. That's kind of implied right. There has been huge growth in the meatless set. These new iterations of products are really going after the flexible -tarian customer and as people are looking for ways to have a healthier lifestyle improve their overall general health but then a better impact to the environment or incorporating meat. Free days meatless. Mondays in those sorts of things so these products really target customers that want the full meet experience but just a better version of it sweatshirt this as a better version of the full meet experience. Please don't i know it's implied. Did the two product types classic meat or now. New meatless does the product development sort of inform one category over the other. Like we gotta have a meatless bacon because we sell so much regular bacon or or does it work independent of what sells well in the traditional meet category. That's a great question. The new products that were developing our specific target to what does well in the meat or seafood set or chicken. For example i mean great tenders new sausage product that eats differently than our older or i should say first generation sausage links that we have. It wasn't that long ago when when we had to sort of change our expectations and we'd often wind up saying that's pretty good for vegan or vegetarian. Or an analog a stand in and now i feel like the products have changed to the point. Where oftentimes it's like. whoa. I wouldn't have known that was vegan. If you didn't tell me these days you see especially at fast. Food chains and in restaurants Like fried chicken. That actually looks like chicken. Sausage that eats tastes like sausage. It's gone beyond the burger to all those other food products that people normally crave And to get that texture in by it's really a lot more complicated than most people assume otherwise it tastes rubbery or it doesn't have that richness. doesn't cook the same to. That's been keep in mind that some of the proteins remain raw looking as opposed to really cooking and having the char in the grill so that you get that full experience not just the flavor the texture and the presentation of it. You don't have to give up your burger to have something plant based you can still enjoy those comfort foods. You just eat less calories or less fat for that occasion and you're doing something good for yourself and for the environment at the same time. Mimic mimic Animal based products. What's what sort of a holy grail product that you've not seen yet that that you're interested in in having developed bacon is one of them but then also a range of charcuterie. I have yet to really try anything that does well as far as texture and flavor. That's it's kind of more rubber which is a plant based material could could qualify fifteen years ago. I wasn't interested in picking up something that said vegan. Because experience told me it wasn't gonna taste very good. A great things taste good now. Oh they absolutely do. And even beyond just the meatless items the dips and dressings and whatnot with implant based cream cheese. I mean you would never know that you weren't eating a full cream. Cheese product tastes. It has the same mouth. Feel the same flavor profile the dips are at. That's an interesting topic because we've we've approved a number of them recently. Have i'm we're very excited to that. We have to zeki and a caramelized onion as well. That will launch in two thousand and twenty one and within panel. I wanna say everybody agreed that they actually tasted better or the same as a full dairy version. So you'd be hard pressed to differentiate them in a blind tasting. I don't think you could necessarily tell what else in the in the world of plant based stuff is top of mind for you or interesting things. You're looking forward to or. I'm looking to do more work on the seafood side. We don't have options yet within our stores for a plant based seafood product. But they're crabcakes out on the market or scallops ortona replacement so really looking more at the seafood to make sure that we've covered all of the proteins that customers are familiar with and bringing in the best versions of those. We have every single meal covered. We have breakfast options with links and patties we have burgers for lunch or even replacements for something as popular as our orange chicken so we've got a full spectrum so that you don't have to pick and choose which meal you can really incorporate it throughout your day or your week and really find what you're looking for ten years from now it will look completely different again know when you can mimic those flavors and textures. That people really love to have as part of their diet. Then they can feel freer to say okay. I'm going to have less meat in my diet. I'm not going to become a complete vegan vegetarian but maybe this day. I won't eat meat this day. I will absolutely. And i think it's becoming almost cool to say that you're you know you eat plant. Based that it's becoming more acceptable. More understood. people are trying new things so protein patties to sort of beef analog protein patties the texture is a little too soft for me for eating on a bun. Texture is a really big part of something being delicious or not Even though it's not flavor. I think one of our adams that we've really nailed on. Texture is the meatless meatballs. It's one of my family favorite items and we use it as a substitute spaghetti. All the time is just a way to swap something out. That's quick and easy you know and then add some shredded carrots and we've got plenty of plants and it's lower in fat and calories than the meat version that we sell as well and you would never know that you weren't eating meat. I think they're really great tasting meatballs. But you're not super focused on. Is it a perfect replication of the meat version. Because there's so many other flavors happening and the texture. I think to the point you just made the texture of those Meatless meatballs in the freezer. Case is perfect. They are perfectly meaty meatballs without without the meat. They're they're my personal favorite just the way you are

I don't think she's like like a user. I don't know she seems nice. She sees delicious. Yeah no i think she's regular so now an episode later they're still driving to dc guys. This is a two hour drive. What are we doing to very long. Drive tracy so now. He's buying her airport flowers. I guess because he saw like cult do it and did not do it and didn't want to get in trouble. Okay so maybe. Bring the flowers to the airport. I can't imagine maybe go to trader joe's before they have an amazing selection. They really do. They're probably so expensive at the airport. That's what i was thinking. And they're like not great. They're like buying like Sometimes in my cbs. I don't know if everyone has this. Just because i live in very fancy area. I here you go to cvs and there's just dead flowers like the flowers that you could buy like. They're they're like on their last leg. Oh yeah. I believe that. I mean we have data flowers over here. They're not bad. No bodega flowers are good the inside. Cvs flowers that probably get delivered once a month and they still sell them after they're dead. It's great. I want you to know that i felt like a little like h on my belly button. Just now yeah and this was stuck in my pants a hershey kiss thing noel. Admitting that you have a problem is the first step. And i'm glad that you're here. I feel like it was just so you know so ironic that it happened with you. Here live on the podcast. No it's not. Ron because you probably pull hershey kisses rappers out of many many different parts of your body honestly i probably aided at my sleep and just stop there. You were like. Oh is this the garbage. No that your belly button and you were like whatever. It's the garbage now. whatever same hall. This isn't wow. His family is so excited. That julia's coming. That it's not a normal amount of excited. No like no mother should be this excited. This is a lot. His mom is screaming Yeah it's weird. They all saw her four months ago. Also i thought you guys didn't like her very much. I mean and then they talked about how much they didn't like her right. His mom is screaming at least screaming. Okay so now. They're doing a full make out. Okay i married. And i would not make out with my husband in front of my in laws. That's gross it's here. It's just weird. He's he's creating dominance over his parents. That's what he's doing. Is that what that is i think. So he's trying to show them. He's a big boy and he could do whatever he wants. He's gross. i like his sweater though Okay so now she says julia says and this is a quote. You ready ready. I like how i always ask. If you're ready for a quote. I know well. Sometimes i'm not so you have to make sure she says i'm from russia. Now i stay here. I mean the girl knows. She's got a life plan more tongue kissing. That's the thing it's just like gross. Like i'm uncomfortable and i'm not related to you. Okay and then something crazy happens. The entire family does a four-way kiss with tongue Yeah does everyone and then just a weird porn just started happening and then she says very excited to be in america. You are there you are. I don't blame her so they check into the hotel room so nice that they are allowed to get their hotel room. Uh-huh yeah that's so crazy and she's like hey. I was thinking when they she they go down there. I'm like this is the restaurant this just looks like. It's just the hotel lobby and they're just giving them food there. I mean i guess that works because they don't want to go anywhere. I guess i don't know. Dc has nice places to eat. Yeah but i'm just saying her. It's nice that she didn't really have to go. Trader Joes Platinum Reserve Pinot Noir 2019 Revew

"And the stem from cheap wine bar, again. And again, I was always another one. And shouldn't drop your flute. And this one is a Trader Joe's Platinum a reserve Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills 2019 Lot 19 sales and Trader Joe's simply pushing the Platinum Reserve wines lately and it's kind of like it off. Our fearless Flyers says that they are equal to wines at twice the price and Beyond and the price range for these things have been fourteen ninety-nine. I think in the past they've been up and down but because I had Okawville Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, that was really nice and the house speaks Hillsong. So your game in its your seem to be getting a wine that you don't normally find for 1499. In a wine shop or in a civil Market 1499 for one isn't you know anything unusual but a Trader Joe's were you know, that's you know, everything is 999 or less for the most part. Yeah. And they do such a good you know, you get a Russian River Pinot Noir or Chardonnay for ten bucks, you know making you jump up another five bucks wage, you know, they have to give you incentive. Something that you probably can't get elsewhere and that's what this kind of is. It's a little Santa Rita Hills is in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara is hundred miles north of Los Angeles. It's in you know, it's you can be under degrees in Los Angeles in the summer time. But the part where the The Vineyards are jets out. I could strangle kind of into the ocean. So there is water to the north of South in the west. So the cool breezes make this area from for the most part off in many cases cooler than Northern California all the grooming regions up there. And this is Santa Rita Hills. The hills are black the cold air. So it keeps it's a great place and plus the the soil is just so fascinated estimated shock, which is kind of like what you get in Champagne region. So, it's Catholic it's correct. At the school European stuff so oil it's got this cold long cool growing region. It's a great place to be in the wire and off a senator. I don't know if you you're up on all the trendy wines which see smoke which is like, you know, you gotta get a list against you smoke that's from Santa Rita Hills, you know, it's not that big a reason the page where that came from where within a couple of Miles rather grateful. This one came from, you know, the a custom line producer made it for Trader Joe's it's not like this is probably off its, you know, it's a really expensive wine that was left over. They got it. Someone bought grapes and made this wind but it's from a really good pinot noir growing region, but it's 4 a.m. To or alcohol which is a little stiff for Pinot Noir. So we're going to have more body. If you're in the class of Pinot Noir, you know, you might not be all that crazy about it. But if you're don't mind a glass of yummy every so often in this might be your boss know. It's not that much that there has been no hassle Petite Sirah added to it a couple other things but not that there's anything wrong with that. This one's got somebody to it. It's got a little bit of dead. It's a little heavier in the pallet put still continue are not class have been an alarm but it still tastes great. I don't think it slipped because I'm talking about I got glasses. I had I've got no self-control. It feels good on your palate. It's got its got the flavors. It's got some like little sharper image biases and Scott Scott Tana. The channels are sweet, but they're they're yeah, I'm really inexpensive wine nowadays tannins are kind of missing in action. They take them out you know it off. Easier to Angel I'm at this is 2019. If you got you don't deal with the channel until they reduce them as much as they can but here they're there but they don't buy it or they don't do anything other than just let you know. They're they're home. It's kind of nice to see you know, yeah, it's five bucks more than their typical lies. And yeah, it's not classic. You know, it's a little heavier. It's a little more a little little little more vulgar on your pal, but it's not over the top taste great interesting mean. How often do you get a Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2019 little young. There are some $50 119 is out there, but they usually a little bit older. So what happened to get on Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir for 1499 that's interesting. And this one's got interested got personality the classic no taste good. Yeah off. And so there we are.
