"Is the one to beat in the north, more love for motor city on the way. Back on NFL live and we were waiting on this one. CJ Gardner Johnson headed to Detroit. The top free agent safety now off the board. What an addition for the Lions. They're obviously stockpiling talent and we'll get to that. The lions have made their secondary a priority this off season. On top of Gardner Johnson, they brought in Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley and free agency, makes plenty of sense, right? Is Detroit's past defense ranked last in opponent QBR 31st in yards per attempt in 30th in first down rate last season, and Marcus, you like what the lions did on defense last week. It's like they're just stockpiling guys on guys here. Yes, yes. Not only did the lines do well towards the end of the season, obviously. But you also think about this team and how they've continued to press forward. This is the first time in a minute that I've thought the Detroit Lions outside of when Caldwell was there. They have a clear plan, a legitimate way that they want to go about playing football. They want to be physical. This is a team that plays with a lot of energy, Aaron Glen and obviously the head coach Dan Campbell has done a phenomenal job at changing the ecosystem and changing the way that these guys think about the Detroit lands within their own building. No better guy than Chelsea gardener Johnson. Y'all, we saw his impact in influence on Philly's defense. When he was there, my man buggy hit us with a stat I researching, which is phenomenal. When he's on the field, look at the QBR opponent. Look at the TD to interception ratio in the yards per attempt. This is one guy. This is taking one guy off the field. QBR goes up by 20 plus points. You see the TV interception ratio, 12 touchdowns to three in The Simpsons and 8.2 yards per play when Charles Gordon Johnson was off the field. You talking about impact and a team that believed that they can win early and often during the season and have a chance to do big things. That's what the lions did with this sign. And they're going kind of deep to forward or longs to short. They're going to coverage first videos like, you know, from a quarterback's perspective, they got 6 or 7 guys. Now they can cover. So we're talking, and I go back to Detroit to start last season. And they could not get off the field in the past game. I remember the eagles game vividly. I remember the Seattle seahawk game vividly when they had to get stops. They could not stop the pass. And the way that Aidan Hutchinson played last year, you sit there and go, they can cover that defense has got a chance, Aaron Glenda, duke coordinator, wants to play physical in your face, man coverage, to have 6 or 7 guys that can do it. If that front four plays as well as they did last year, now we're talking about a defense that matches a very good offense. Yeah. I swear the lions are like the official team of NFL live because every time we do a lion segment, everybody's mood picks up. The reason for our men. We all just like really love this team and the way they've gone about things and that continues with these signings in the secondary. Dan, you talked about how the Lions play a ton of man coverage. They also use the fourth most nickel in the NFL last year, meaning an extra defensive back. So what they needed to do was not only get defensive backs who can cover and play man, but they just needed volume, period. What I love about this signing particularly CG gardener Johnson is his versatility. If Tracy walker is still banged up, he can play safety. If he's not, they can slide him into the nickel. He can play a number of positions on this team, gives him versatility as they figure out where they want everyone to play. I also love that all these contracts are super reasonable. You got cam's son on a cheap multiyear deal. He Johnson, on a one year prove it deal, they all fit together really well. Don't keep and it doesn't prohibit them from drafting a corner either in the first round this year. It just strikes me as really smart, calculated team building. Real quick, where do they finish in the division? They're the division favorite right now. No question about it. I'll make the case to you right now that if they continue to add, if they had another piece on their defense and their offense stays healthy, it's them San Francisco and Philadelphia as the teams in the NFC. So I can't wait to see a really healthy Jameson Williams too. Time one more thing before we go. Who needs enemies when you got friends like booger McFarland, okay? Shouting out 6 p.m. sports in her hosts, our friend Kevin na Gandhi on his birthday with this photo. Look at this. The hoop earrings, jacket, no lapel, the turtleneck. Anyone got a guess on that year, wouldn't you? Yo, what year was that? Who is the Joey from new kids on the block? A 94. Piece of 84 coach this year. I like the experience. Kev. That's good. Mister steal your girl, Mina. Happy birthday. Kevin. Back in the day? What? New kids on the block. I don't know, was that a boy band? And he's a Philly guy. I mean, boys to men, yes. "Hawkinson where I'm not making a George kittle comp, but you can do George kittle things with them, right? You can affect defenses in a George kitty and type of way. And so yeah, I'm excited about this run game and by virtue of that very excited about penne sewell. If you are going to and again, I think I'm gonna pick the lines to, sorry, I have to win the division. But when a wild card spot go to the postseason here this year and that'll be sort of my hottest, my hottest take going into the prediction season that will be upon us very soon, but if you are going to be down on this team, which a lot of people will be and probably a lot of people should be. It's because of this defensive backfield. So they have had so many issues. I know I'm not really focusing on one guy, but they've had so many issues in that secondary going back to the attempted rebuild under the map Patricia and the old patriots brass that was there. Desean Elliott, let's see if he sort of solidifies that safety group a little bit better. I mean, that's on paper and intriguing pairing with him and Tracy walker. We'll see how it goes and then obviously Jeff coming back. They don't really have they don't have anyone you look at among these cornerbacks and say, okay, this guy is a starter in the NFL. You just wouldn't say that about any of these guys yet. But between Okuda and aurorae, you might have, you might have two starters. Who knows? Yeah. I think I think a cuda was always kind of a weird pick for Matt Patricia, right? And so I don't know. I think if anybody could get the best out of them, it might be Dan Campbell. And I mean, there was a very, very small sample size of play last year, but I'm willing to give this guy a shot. I mean, it was what, one year of Matt Patricia, and then you tore your ACL the next year, like week two. So this is his third year. This will be his third year, right? Yeah. So I don't know. I give him a shot, right? I think he could be one of those guys that it's like, okay, you know? He could be your number one. He could, they have a bunch of guys, and again, the cornerback position is so fickle. And there are so many guys. I always call it the Ronald Darby rule to myself, where it's like, you have all these guys who one year they could be top 20 in the league, and one year they could be young outside the top

No titan wiscon- applicable after that ran the ball to high level Jimmy passive or high level. We started playing our game and ended. The game definitely took our foot off the gas and Jobs nfl and there's not really any bad teams. Everybody on a cell can play football. That's why they're there and A very interesting and definitely taught us a lesson. Georgia wasn't surprised with a quarterback rotation because obviously and training camp game plan week all the different things. You had a chance to kind of see. But you didn't see it until live action in the game against detroit. What did you make of the rotation between the two quarterbacks something different You know The big fan of oh jimmy entree and they both bring a lot of things to the table so Jimmy was rolling and trae came in and I think stevens is up to a lot of different things when you do that transition because the all both very different quarterbacks so i enjoyed it I find out there and I mean i don't know what triggered like three or four plays but It was it was different. And i'm just gonna react. Whatever coach shannahan puts out there. Captain falcon why did you have to steph. I'm tracy walker to thirty like that man while you have to do it like that. George gotta get my man man. Yeah hey so with having a guy like trae lance progress from the preseason until now what what have you seen about his progression overall. That makes you think that he could be a quarterback a great quarterback in the future. I mean just his His commitment to getting better every single day. I mean it doesn't make the same mistakes twice He's definitely a rookie. And you see some of those things but he progresses. And that's that's what you wanna see sorta so you guys take steps in the right direction. eh leads to great results and Trays definitely doing that. Since taking a lot of steps and he's definitely got plenty of love to learn but he's got a law all the intangibles to be a very good player in fell. George you guys look a great quarterback situation. You got an underrated quarterback who's been to a super bowl came one. Pass away from winning it. You got a guy with great upside learning about when you look around the nfc west. Russell wilson cuyler murray matt stafford. They all looked like mvp's week one and they can all perform in a very high level. What is your thought about playing in. Looks like to me and many the toughest division in football. I mean. i've been saying that. For a minute max Nfc westman we got a lot of people out there. You know from cardinals calamari. They got deandre hopkins. Tanner jones baker. Rams of air donald. That's that's pretty good and then by itself phone and the seahawks. You're always bringing it with wilson so i mean like you got guys everywhere Day They gotta go started. Defense and nick bosa and their car instead and fred warner and You know we have guys that can make a lot of plays and i think our officers gonna continue. Keep rolling and The one thing that we do better than i think anyone else in our divisions wrong the damn ball that's a running continue to do and You know violent physical every single week george so six round pick elisha. Mitchell stepped up much. Like most i did a couple of years ago. Allies ahead one hundred four yards and a tug After the injury what did make of his rookie performance. Because you've been a rookie was before and you know how tough it is. Rookies to get acclimated to the speed of the game. I'm very impressive. It is the speed is way different accession running back when our offense when you're just told to run in a straight line sassy possibly can and just trusted. There's gonna be a whole there. I mean it's definitely takes a lot of Occurred things. And i think the largest step they a great job. He ran hard. There's a lot of runs that you'll see on tape. Should've been like two yard runs and they ended up being like Eight to twelve yard around knowing you have a running back can take a short run in for four or five yards. You're doing something right and so Worse continuing to try to block and open big holes forum. And while we're else's toting ball all alright obligatory year travis kelsey question. It was the best tight end in football right now. George i mean there's great items all over the league max all over the last night there while. Excuse my language staring while running a good thing during wallet great and Calcio two touchdowns. I know this past sunday. Titans was scoring touchdowns all the league is basically national tight end day. So you can take your pick. "That can generate pass rusher? You see some makeup blitzes from Collins as well. I think they're going to utilize him and you might drop somebody back and coverage Angeloni and Collins of the inside linebackers. Low. Just the thought on that secondary Okuda or a warrior Walker Harris. Always something to prove. Yes, like we talked early, Young young. All these guys are young in the backfield. So we're going to have to see especially Jeff. Oh, cool, You know, high draft pick last year up and down here. I want to see how not only he plays about how he leads this young secondary. With Tracy Walker. Will Harris and the money a warrior back there? It will be interesting and also interesting to see who's going to be our nickel bag. When they bring them in. We have covered the offensive line. It'll be Nelson at right. Tackle by tie it right Guard center Frank Rag now left tackle be punished. Sewell left guard Jonah Jackson. Receivers TJ. That's something that we're all waiting to see who can make some plays out there. Cally, Fran and Tyrell Williams Trinity Benson in his first game of the ninth, Quintus See this, Um unwra ST Brown. What an opportunity for these guys to go out and show you can play. It's all in front of him. Here is an attack of an opportunity. We haven't seen a lot of these guys playing the preseason, but Tyrell Williams just looking at him. On the sideline. He's a big target. He might be a deep red guy, but I'd like to see the run game. Get going a little bit early. Mix that up with some quick passes. Kind of let that offensive line settle in. Now you're talking about Amount of targets going. T. J Hawkinson is way out of the slot of Monroe. ST. Brown could get a lot of targets as well. Using his speed to kind of get the middle of the field going. T. J. Hawkinson has mentioned the tight end. Jason come into the full back. We'll see. DeAndre Swift and Jamal Williams, running back haven't seen swift yet in the preseason will see him and then the big willow Jared Goff. Yes, it's.

"Mr. Dan Miller. Dan, Welcome to the Murphy Max. So we've never had before. Brian Murphy, my friend Adam Copeland sitting in today for my My partner, Probably Mac and hey, happy football season to you, Dan. How you doing, man? Yeah, guys, great to be able to do as a heck of a way to start last night, and I think we're all fired up. I mean, you know, new seasons. You don't have a record yet, So there's always hope, and I think that's what sports are built on is You know, people believe in that Maybe something good can happen this year, so we'll see. It's gonna be a lot of fun. Yeah, All right, So I don't mean to be like me and right out of the gate. But I'm just gonna start to use that sentence that there's always hope so I was going to ask you, Dan. Is there really hope with the 2021 Detroit Lions like I'm not trying to be like that. Not trying to be snarky or mean like, but that's a team that's not getting a lot of respect around the league. How's the How's the feeling from that camp? No, And I think that's a fair point. But I also would say this hope comes in many different forms, and I think if you're the lions, you understand where you are right now and from the day that Brad Holmes, the general manager, and Dan Campbell, the head coach, walked in. They never said. We're two players away, and you know this things close. I think everybody in Detroit understand this is going to be a process and look, we have four teams going through rebuilds right now. All of our professional teams are going through our hope for the Lions. Is represented in progress, and I think what people want to see is look, they love to win. This team is going to go out and do everything they can to try to win, but the barometer for them beyond that is, does this thing look better? Does this thing look like it's headed in the right direction to the young players look like they're developing and those are, I think a lot of the metrics that the people will measure this team by this year. More so than maybe a team like San Francisco, which looks like it's built to win, and if they don't it's going to be disappointing. I think the hope is that the lines are built to grow and develop voice voice. You heard Dan Miller Lions play by play on the UM against line. I'm wondering about Dan Campbell coming in because you're talking rebuild and you bring in a guy who's a big personality and he's got these motivational tools, and he's made some news because he said some funny things, but on Sunday he's got to get down to business. His job is to win football games. So how much of the the sort of inspiration Oh, versus humorous anecdotes stuff that he did in the off season. How much is that is coming into player. How are people viewing that as the As the Lions get ready for a really tough stretch of games to start the season. Well, you had a team that was fractured that he took over. It was not a good situation. The head coach is not get along a lot of players, and sometimes that's winning. Sometimes that's personality. Whatever it is. But it wasn't a good situation. A lot of teams. You know, Several teams best players have been traded and there were personality differences with the coach. So I think that for a lot of guys him coming in here was a breath of fresh air. And that's not to take a shot at Matt Patricia in any way, shape or form. Look, his coaching style worked in New England. He was terrific events. Coordinators got range to prove it. It didn't work here. And I think that For a lot of guys. Having somebody who came in Who was just a different personality, more approachable. More of a player's coach, if you will to use the cliche was was something that that that was welcomed by them. And you know, you got a lot of young players on this team that didn't play well last year. That can be a part of this team Future and the job of Dan Campbell and his staff is To maximize the potential of some of those guys like Jeff Okudah, Tracy Walker, and will Harris and money are a warrior and Julian Okwara draft picks up in the last two or three years. They haven't necessarily shown what they can be yet, but I don't think that anybody has given up on him. So the jet fuel for the rebuild. He's coaching these guys getting through to these guys motivating these guys and getting these guys to show that they're part of the solution going forward. And then all of a sudden this thing can turn around pretty quickly. But, um, it's always saying that his personality was it was a significant change from the one that he replaced, and I think it was needed. But you see that in sports all the time, guys you go from You know, a disciplinarian, Two players coach players coach to somebody who's tougher on the players. And I think that's kind of the ebb and flow of hiring that you get sometimes of professional sports. That's what we got here. Hey, anybody watches Ted Lasso knows Culture change can matter. Right. There you go. Alright, we're talking to He's got those guys playing well, doesn't he? Yeah, we got Dan Miller the play by play Man for the Detroit Lions. 10 a.m. kickoff, of course, on our sister station kgo and one Oh, 77. The bone. Now, Dan, you mentioned a cuda and I'm looking, you know, last three years you guys have top eight picks the lines of a top papist TJ Hawkinson Okuda highly regarded corner out of Ohio State and then Penis you'll tackle at Oregon and, you know, there comes a time when like that starts to pay dividends. You know, like the Niners went through that and all of a sudden, you know Aldon Smith and, uh into Forest. Buckner turned out to be really good players, you know, So is there a sense that there is an accumulation of talent? These last in particular those three players Well, it only pays dividends if you're right, and if you develop them, and I think they believe that they were clearly right on on, Haakenson, Uh, you know today is not to take hasn't taken a snap yet. And I think that Tokuda had a rough rookie season. But the reasons that you drafted him there are still there, and I think now it is Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator, Aubrey Pleasant to secondary coach their job. To get this kid's confidence back and get him back out there playing the way that they believe that he is capable of playing. So, yes, there's no question there's some young guys and there's others on this team. That they believe have significant potential that haven't necessarily shown that yet. That or they haven't realized it yet. It's probably a better way of putting it, so I think that that's the goal is to bring these guys along and all of a sudden if he looks like the number three pick in the draft and hawk looks like they already does, and can improve and and today looks like the top offensive lineman in that last draft. And, yeah, all of a sudden you look at your death chart is looking a lot better, and that's the goal of these guys. Look The key in this league is being right when you pick a guy and then developed being on when they come in, and that hasn't happened here enough, and that's one of the reasons on both sides of the equation being right and developing and that's That's what has to change if this thing is going to turn around its its better personnel and then taking that personnel that really doesn't know for the most part what it is to play in the National Football League. When they get here. They may think they do, but there's a lot of big learning curve, taking those guys and making them into NFL players. Dan Miller's voice..

"Very preliminary, no defense out there, but I didn't think he looked Funky. You're uncomfortable doing it when they asked him to do some of his sets and drops in, uh, in the mini camp and and things like that. So I think that again. I think he'll be fine there eventually, For sure, he'll be really good. I think you know, you can even still talk about him and maybe moving back to the left side of, you know, 56 years from now, Taylor Dr moves on whenever That contract runs out so I think it was a really good picky like you said. That's the strength of their team. And now you have Taylor Decker has developed into a really, really good left tackle. Peninsula has got a chance to be, I think, an elite right tackle You've got one of the top two or three centers in football, and and then you just hope the guards. Can fill it in because that's where they're going to win games. They have to control things up front. I think still can do that. You know, there's not As much of a gap between what you have to do with the left tackle spot on what you have to do The right tackle spiders. There it was, You know, 10 15 20 years ago where you'd get different defenders rushing at you. Everyone's got good, too good at Russia's. Now it's all athleticism. Um So you got to be ready for for that. And I think Sewell will be Chris Burke. The selections number two and number three for this team. We're both on the defensive line and had some people raising their eyebrows a little bit. Levi owns working and lean McNeil. How How are they in Camp? I mean, I think you see why they liked him, and I also think you can kind of tell just from watching him early. Why it's Sort of moving away from what the old scheme was, where you just sort of ask the defensive lineman to kind of anchor in there and hold things up and occupy blockers and and see if someone else could fly in and make tackles. Both of those guys moved really well. McNeil Looks like he's going to be playing nose tackle most of the time, which I don't think it's a surprise on your Ikea. Uh, you know, the big reason he's intriguing is because even in these camps, they're moving around quite a bit, And I think he's going to be one of those guys that So maybe if you get a matchup, you put them on the ball and let him rush right over the center. Maybe you put him way out wide and let him play a defensive end spot or anywhere in between. I think he's got that kind of Athleticism that ability to kind of shoot gaffes and create problems like that. So, uh, you know a lot of movie parts up front. I think that that's that's a challenge for them, but certainly if If the goal is to get away from what that defensive line was and to make it more challenging to play against because of its its athleticism. You can see that sure. And those two guys Let's go to the cornerbacks Phatu Melon fan who was the selection. The second selection around number three, the fourth overall selection for the Lions that pick number one on one. The cornerback out of Syracuse. Big body guy, Jeff Okun has already talked about how he thinks that you know, he's basically in a whole new world, and he feels a lot better here in year number two. I think that's a good sign. Of course, On the opposite side. The name escapes me, and I don't know how it escapes me. But I guess I got to pull up a depth start real quick to take a look at it. But there was a young fell out of Penn State. Or worry, Um, on general money over are you? I don't know why I could think of his name, but the cornerback position. Obviously, you know, you have to have a defensive line that can put some pressure on the quarterback to make the corners job easier, and you have to have corners that can cover that can make the defensive lines job easier. And by, you know, it's like the two parts is as much as they are so far away from each other on the football field. They really do. Kind of go hand in hand. What did you make of melon fondue? What did you make of the cornerbacks as a as an entire unit or room? Yeah, Mala fun. Well, you know, that's another guy that size really shows up out there. He definitely a big game. It seems like that. That's between that draft pick signing Quinn Dunbar, like they want to get bigger. They want to be more physical on the outside. They want some guns. We're going to take some chances and And play aggressively and come up and support the run and all those things and and again you're shifting the scheme to kind of help you do that plan two safeties up top instead of, you know. Just Iran. Harmon back there and bring in Tracy Walker down and ask him to cover tight ends. I think it's going to be A little friendlier for the cornerbacks and give him a chance to get up and really play guys on the line, a lot, which you know those guys should be able to do because they're big and physical questions, especially with a guy like or a warrior is what happens if you get beat off the line can be turned and run with those guys. I don't know that we have those answers yet from him, But, um, that's one of those spots where It seems like they've made improvements and they may be made progress from where they were at the end of last year, But you really need a lot of stuff to go right for it to be a good unit. We'll see. I mean, I do think it will help it just sort of simplify things. Specially for a guy like Jeff Okudah. Um You know, just kind of wipe the slate clean, simplify it. Let him get back to some of the stuff he does. Well, make sure he's got some help behind him if he needs it, and kind of go from there Last one for you completely non lines related, except for twice a year when we go there, and then they come to Detroit. That is the Green Bay Packers. Will Aaron Rodgers be the quarterback of the pack this year? Uh, I mean, I'll say yes until he's not the quarterback pastors because I don't know that you want to prepare for him to not be there and then show up And, you know, Week two, and all of a sudden you got to play against them on Monday night, Um I'm sure it would go. I just don't. It's kind of It kind of twist your mind into a pretzel what it would do to this division and even to this conference if he's not the quarterback of the Packers for so long, because so much of this division really everything is gone through having to play Aaron Rodgers for so long here. That the thought of him maybe leaving. Kind of changes. I think how every other team in the division would look at, you know their short term and long term futures. He is Chris Burke. He covers the Lions for the athletic Detroit and we don't know who's gonna be the quarterback of the Packers. But if it's not Aaron Rodgers, I like our odds. And Chris is always my friend. Thank you so much for your time. A man we greatly appreciate you. Yeah, anytime. Thanks. There he goes. Find him on Twitter..

"That combined total of three other games combined. Told No one like that's what they do. That's what they do. Yeah, you and they want. They turned over the ball four times. They got penalized 14 times and they want But but it's really been an incredible season. Did not know that about Clay Martin and plays a younger official issue, said Terry McAuliffe Change territory retired the same year and play was elevated the referee at that at that time, so our thoughts and prayers go out to him, and he's a great athlete growing up in a football player in a baseball players, well, so basketball players so Hopefully, he'll be able to get through this, but being hospitalized is a major concern. Tony Corrente worked our game again yesterday. The 40 Niners Seattle game and you hated importing at a game a few weeks ago. And you noted that he was the best manager in your wedding. And he's 69 years of age and I just reading about him as I do before every game. The officials the lead had the white hat. He's been doing this since 1971. Began at the J C level worked in college football on the old T C double A in the eighties and He's been in the league since 95 a ref since 98, you know, last year, you and I had that Tito's bet with building a bitch being the referee and Super Bowl 54. I'm thinking about Tony. How much longer since you're so close with them. How much longer do you think he will do this? And what's your handicap on Super Bowl? 55 White hat, Mike. Well, first of all, I can't say that I'm all that close to him anymore. You know, I was close to him when he was my best man. I became less close to him when I became his boss in the NFL, and you became the worst man. Yeah. Then I became the worst man, but no way. We certainly have a long history and work back together in the PC A back in those days in the early 19 eighties, and you know, I I think he's Contender. I also think he needs to step aside, though. Um, I get concerned about people that about officials that hang in too long. He's had a hell of a career and he's a a very good referee. But your skills do begin to deteriorate. And I don't care who you are. And When you get to that, and it has nothing to do with the age of 69 or the age of 70 or whatever. But, you know, there comes a time when you know you need toe step out when you're on top. So if he does get the Super Bowl if he ends up to be the guy, I do believe that will probably be his last game and I'm putting words into his mouth. When it comes to handicapping. I don't know. Listen, I was a guy that was all over Ron Torbert. You know, a year ago and thought that he might be the guy and he, uh, he he wasn't so I'm gonna stick with Torbert. I just think he's he presents himself extremely well. And You know and just is a smart guy and a good solid referee. So I'm gonna go with Torbert. So if you're saying you're going with Karenni, um I didn't say that. I didn't say that. Did I say that? John? Did I say that? Did I say that? I feel a kinship? Yes. I would think that this year would be a good year to have around Torbert is the is the white White hat in this game. I could see that happening. You know the assignments for this weekend yet? Do we know it's going to be the referees for the three and three on Saturday and Sunday yet? No, I haven't. I haven't seen him yet. I haven't seen him yet. I don't think they are actually going to be made until tomorrow because They do use the grades from the games yesterday. They do use them on day. Don't grate it as closely as they do the other 16 weeks of the regular season, but they do scan through the games. And by the way, the fact that they don't break him is closely and I should say they I was the same way they know that your skin and quickly over the game, so if you look at the penalty total, if you think they were downed man, if they were down before this, they like they like there were. There were games with four penalties. Three penalties and I forget one day 900 yards. I believe it was the Buffalo game. Think Buffalo. Miami had 900 yards and the ton of points and they were like three penalties in the game, but I think that they'll notify the officials Today, and I don't know if because of the covert. They have changed the standards or whatever. And it's just kind of like, you know, I'm sure Walt Anderson is sitting there with Perry. You'll And the others back in New York tonight, it will say, Okay, we're gonna put him here because he made qualified, but he's local. We're not gonna We're gonna put him in his local games or it didn't have to try. That stuff's probably going to go on in the playoffs, too. All right. We gotta let you go. We gotta We gotta get to do some stuff. But it's been very good now because Skylar Johnny Collins, OK, Ok, good. OK, then. Let me ask you Let me ask you one thing from yesterday Because this one I understand you've got to protect the quarterback. We talked about it a million times. But the Tracy Walker's sack on Kirk cousins in 1/4 into what was that I couldn't figure it out. I watched it 10 times. Nobody could figure it out. Um, you know that the slightly have changed the standard about landing on top of the quarterback with most of your all most or all of your body weight. You have to make an attempt early on to try to get off as opposed to like the very end putting your arms down to brace yourself, and I think when you change the standard and the official's mind, you know, sometimes it does some tricks and And then you overreact when when somebody changes a standard of some degree, But that's not a foul. I mean, he just went right over the top and then normal tackle normal tackle that you would make and And I know that when Adrian Hill, who was the referee that made the call when he looks at that, um he's gonna He's gonna kind of, say the same thing I just said Um, you know, it's just one that looked different to him. But again, it's just I don't think we're over protecting anymore. I kind of like it and the number of roughing the passer penalties are down like everything else. But I do think you get that type of Of just normal tackle. And I just think that we got to get back to saying the referees. Hey, if it's a normal tackle without any drive into the ground or anything, let the guys play football. Let them play football, but I didn't like that calling off..

"We will still continue to support our hometown team. We just won't be Broadcasting their games anymore, and it ended up well pretty much the way the season is gone only with the bang by allowing the according to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News by allowing the Minnesota Vikings to rack up 507 yards of offense. And score a season high 37 points on Sunday Hard, Detroit Lion said new franchise worst marks in yardage and points allowed in the 37 to 35 defeat, sinking below the winless 2008 squad, but making it all sounds much better. All Lions all the time. Steve Courtney and Mike O'Hara, Detroit Lions com columnist. Gentlemen. Happy New Year. Happy New Year there, Doug. Good morning again. My friends. Yeah. 37 35 The final lions end this 2020 Campaign five and 11. The Vikings check out at seven and nine. The new administration general manager, head coach priority gotta be on the defensive the ball. That's where we begin our conversation with Mo better. Michael, How are you? Morning, Michael. I'm doing fine. Steve, are you okay? I'm doing great. Thanks for asking is breaking up. I don't think he's breaking up. Okay? Not to my knowledge. Uh, Mike. Obviously, this Lions defense has been so giving all year long. They give up 519 points that is a franchise record. As Paul alluded to yardage another issue. Kirk Cousins throws for 405 Yards, three touchdowns. The script just repeats itself throughout this season. Mike Well started bed when he gave up three touchdown passes to Mitchell. Too risky in the first game against the Bears in the fourth quarter. It stayed that way. And then it ended that way, too. And then yesterday I mean, give Kirk cousins credit. Now he found a weakness, which is glaring the Lions secondary the past defense and exploited it Then, like I said, it ended the same way it started. Well, you know, for a team desperately trying to make a defensive play, Uh, You know where I'm going here early fourth? Yeah, well, all that the fourth and one play. Tracy Walker comes up with the sac. And he's flying for roughing the passer, which An embarrassment for the league. There is absolutely no question about it. How referee Adrian Hill could have possibly thought that Tracy Walker had the weight bearing issue on Kurt Cousins. It was a disgrace. Cousins would eventually sneak. Next thing, you know, Vikings up 37 29 Mike. The fact of the matter is the National Football League. Can't allow this to happen. No. And you know Paula passion. The Oakland presses covered alliance for a long time. Is the pool reporter who talks to the officials don't know the league protocols and all that after the game when there's a dispute, and she actually read the rule to him to the referee, and he was adamant and say that he made the right call. No, Mister referee. You made the wrong call. It's an embarrassing stand up. Be a man and admit you made a mistake. Well, it was garbage and, you know, just to follow the Marvin Jones Jr touchdown pass. That wasn't a touchdown reception upon further review. That was ruled not to be a catch. Mike. Why does all this stuff always happen to the Lions? Uh, because that's why because On several look in some of its pollen, Steve some of that they bring on them on themselves, and that's where I thought you were going with that play at the end of the first half of the gave up a 40 yard catch and run the Chad baby down the left sideline for a touchdown with four seconds left. All I had to do was tackled him. Inbounds half is over. They don't score it. And you know you don't see this often. But you know Darryl Bevell, you actually actually uncharacteristically criticized the players were involved in that place for what they did for lack of after that all he used that expression. We're at the fundamentals, and I referred him in one of my columns for the Detroit lions dot com. First as onlookers and then blockers don't even try to make a plane Only thing missing was there was a red and blue lights flashing at the Crash scene. It was absolutely awful terrible that tackling was an issue all day yesterday. There's no question about that. It's a matter of fact, baby catches that ball at the 18 yard line. It looked like he was done. Then he goes into the end zone. You don't Mike, as I mentioned. There are so many questions now for this lion's organization moving forward, obviously hiring a general manager. Then eventually a new head coach, But let me just say this. I I applaud the work that Darrell Bevell did get to know him a little bit. Mike. Hey, brought a new energy into this team. Hey, had five games to show what he had. I don't think he is going to be the permanent head coach. But that being said, hey, certainly has the respect of everybody in that lion's locker room. The I would think so. I think you're right about that. He was the right person at the right time. And sometimes that's that's an interim person. But you know, just looking at it last night, but I just kind of thinking of the whole season. Cut. They look better than a team that was one and 400 devil. And they looked worse under met Patricia than a team that won four games. In whole it just it just the eye test. It looked like a better team from the last five weeks. Then it was for the 1st 11.5 years happier team. Get happier, looser and all that that that that goes a certain way. But you come down comes down to talent, and it comes down to play making And when you don't have AH, lot of either defensively in this era of the National Football League, you're gonna get chopped up and shredded and that's what happened to the Lions defense. It just It just was never any good. In the last three years with relentless positive radio, they locked up top seven draft pick. So anyway. Um, well, Matthew Stafford, You know the conversation rolls on don't know what number nine's feature is gonna be here in Detroit jobs for 293 yards and three touchdowns yesterday with an interception ribs. Um, ankle? Ah, Walking MASH Unit, a rating of 1 14. And to take it a step further. Mike don't know the status of wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. Eight receptions 180 Yards, two touchdowns yesterday. I really like Marvin Jones Jr. I know. Kenny Golladay is in line for a payday on guy. Assume Mike Marvin Jones will go take his talents elsewhere. But that's sad because here's a dude that shows up game in game out 50 50 balls turned into 80 20 love the way this guy plays a couple of big deals here for the line's moving forward. Yeah, Marvin a little shot Where was around? That doesn't mean he won't be back in Detroit, so I know he's got five kids. Another one on the lady in his life, had been married since College and University, California. Really, I'm really a good family man. And I think it's hard travel using California wouldn't surprise me if he goes back, but it wouldn't surprise me. If he stays because he's a good football player, and they're hard to find especially ones with the character and ability combined that Marvin Jones Jr has let me let me get before you run out of time to the elephant in the room, and that is our relationship with the Lions has ended. And I think Steve summed it up nicely yesterday on the air, and I'll add to that the we've been respectful and loyal partners to the Detroit lines. We wish them well will continue to support them as our hometown team. But I'm not a lawyer, So I'm going to ask a question. I don't really know the answer to we don't lose you two guys. Do we like Michael Harry, You'll still be able to come on as the Detroit lions dot com columnist. I hope And, of course, Steve Courtney. We're not gonna let you go anywhere, are we? You don't follow the lions, gentlemen. I mean, I know Mike is employed by them, but we'll still be able to talk to you won't we? Well, also speak for myself. Oh, hold on. Hold on a second. Wait. Paul I'm an independent contractor, not an employer, The Detroit Lions and I'll go on with everybody. Calls always have and always will. But you said that any kind of relationship with WJR since the mid 19 eighties with started with Frank Beckman on the old sports rap show and doing Lions games and I've enjoyed it..

"There was nothing malicious. There was absolutely nothing violent. He made a football play so again for Adrian Hill, the referee Ted Actually think about throwing that black, eh? That's wrong. The fact that he threw it. Is far worse. And if I was, you know, involved in this lion's organism, Could you imagine Chris Spielman? What the hell he's thinking right now. Oh, dear. Oh, my goodness. But you know what? Look, it is what it is, you know, back to the real problem here, moving forward. And that is this Lions team defensively and I get it. It got to a point where you had Dan Skipper. God love him and offensive lineman. He was up there on the defensive line On bear is Got to be Sean. As we wait for Lomas Brown Toe have a few words with interim head coach Darrell Bevell. There's got to be wholesale changes on that side of the ball. There's no question Steve. There isn't anything there. I mean, it's frightening to me there. You know, there are some guys that we hope turn into good players that have shown some good signs. But they're not there yet. But again one common theme all year is If you're sitting in the film room preparing for the lions, you know who are you looking at on that tape going to? We got to stay away from that guy. I mean it. Z unbelievable The lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball. And you know, the good news is there are some pieces on the offensive side of all but on the defensive side of the ball. There's a couple of young players that we hope can grow into something, and there's a whole lot of nothing. And I think that the final numbers in 2020 carried that true. Romeo Cora. Way to go, lad. I think Romeo Cora represented himself very well this year. Hey, had his 10th sack of the year there in the first quarter. On. Do you know what a little bit of a name for himself? No question about it. So, aside from that, you know you've got some guys that still have A little bit of upside, I would say, Julian, a quarry is one of those. I've seen him make a couple of good places here. Other than that. You know, the new GM coming in has got toe, you know, restock wholesalers, they say, but I'll tell you. What if this was Matthew Stafford's final game is Aliant. 293 yards, three touchdowns. He did have the pick, Um and Marvin Jones Jr. We talked about him during the countdown. Eight receptions. 180 yards, two TDs. If this was his Final game as a lion. He leaves with his head up and can't say how much I've enjoyed watching these two guys do what they do. Unbelievable. I Stephen. It Z. You know you and I have talked about this, and unfortunately, Marvin had shortened seasons. I It's almost as if people forgot. That thing that Marvin and Matthew's hold without their partner. Hold your thought there because this interview with the fine interim head coach himself, Darryl Bevel. Is brought to you by DTE Energy with that we throw it to our colleague Lomas Brown. Well, Thanks. Leave. I'm here with head coach Darrell Bevell. Coat. A lot of offense from both teams. Math do playing hurt today? What did you think of his performance? Yeah. Love as I thought. I thought he did a nice job. You know, he Move the ball around a lot of different guys. A lot of different receivers got got help from the offensive line up front and got good protection. So I just did a nice job. Yeah. Colds. Conversely, tough stop, Um Kirk cousins and Minnesota offense. What challenges that they present today. Well, you know, Lomas, I really got to give it to our guys on defense. I mean, you know they were. There was a lot of guys that had to play in different positions today. You know, we started have guys that went down. I mean, you saw our offensive tackle went into play, play defensive line or defensive ends. We're playing inside. Um and e mean, you know, I just gotta talk about that goal line stand. I mean, it was, you know, just I think that says everything about how these guys were today. I mean, they, you know, I talked about respecting the game and playing for their team mates, and all you gotta do is watch that sequence and know how important it was to. Yeah. Colt some questionable calls And look, I can't get fined for saying it. But that call on Tracy Walker was horrible. What explanation did you get? The explanation I got was body weight. Um, and that's you know, Mr Tough call, You know, it's great play by Tracy and great great play by the defense and a great call. And to put us really in a situation that could have had opportunity to change the game. Yeah, yeah, and Coach. You had a five game audition with these guys. They didn't give up on you. What was your message to the team after the game? Yeah, well, kind of exactly what I said. You know that I had a lot of respect for what they did. You know, it's it's tough situation to go out there. You know, at the end of the year, you know, different guys were playing like I said, different positions, and I wanted him to play for one another play for their team mates and play for you. No respect and respecting this game. And, um, you know, you know, losers will go out there and lay down and you know what kind of kind of go halfway But you know, I think it said everything What you saw in the field. Those guys were playing. Yeah, Coach my last question. What's next? What? What do you do tomorrow? Well, you know, we'll bring him all the guys in. You know what? We'll meet one more time. And you know, we'll start start the process for the exits. And you know in this kind of go from there? Yeah, Coach has been a pleasure, man. And good luck to you. Thanks for always appreciate it. "The end zone touchdown, the trunk lines. Looking back into lions Radio Central. Nice to have you with us. Steve Courtney and Sean believes in breaking it down. The Lions fall to the visiting purple people leaders that there's none of that case. 37 35. It's same as it ever was there, Sean Defensively, Lions just couldn't you know? Come up with a play when they needed 10, and by the way, when they did make a play They were job. So what we're gonna do. Lions finished. 5 11 Vikings finished seven and nine. That's all I know, Steve. Like I'm not being funny. Okay? And I have ripped people in the sports radio world in the television world. I have ripped people for years for for coming up with these crazy lying conspiracies, okay? Like In quick succession to see first the roughing the passer like now I'm at the point where it's funny to me like you know how it works. It's your first year start shocked. Then you get furious, then it's funny, and I'm sure I'll be furious again in a couple hours. That might be. And and Stephen, This is an over. Exaggeration. Yell at me right now. That might be the worst call I've ever seen. Forget about worse, roughing the passer. That might be the worst call I've ever seen in in the NFL. And the NFL should be absolutely embarrassed by it. And then on the Marvin catch, because that's what it was on the Marvin Catch. Look, you and I have sat here. And over the course of the last five years and and we have told people I understand what you're saying, but there has to be evidence to overturn it. There was no evidence to overturn that. There was zero evidence to overturn that and Dean Blandino, who is usually going to stick up for his boys on the field. Deep Blandino was confused on both those places. I mean, I don't even know what to say it. It's that was comical and Steve getting back on the field. I mean, this is this is the worst. Lions defense ever. It really is more yards given up. They passed the 2008 team by a good margin and most points given up the second most points in NFL history. Which also passed the 2008 team. It was It was ugly Steven. There's no place to go. But up for it's been a horrible displaying throughout the year and, uh, you know, I think we saw in this till again against a Vikings defense. Which is statistically poor. Uh, the potential firepower off this line's offense. That, of course, with number nine we saw Marvin Jones Jr have a ball game to the tune of on Navy yards. Um, you know it was there, but look, you're not going to do anything in this league with a defense that has played like this lion's D has played throughout this year. But I will tell you this getting back to the Tracy Walker play rough ary. Adrian Hill has got to be on the phone right now with somebody of authority. In the National Football League saying Look, dude, you blew it. In no way, shape or form was that are roughing the passer penalty and what this is and the Marvin Jones sketch Because once again here we are Aziz Lyon's followers. Not really exactly sure what it catches have We been through this before? Of course we have. But you know for Adrian Hill to even think about taking that flag out on Tracy Walker is a shame It is a sham. It is a complete mess, because guess what? That was a game changer. The lions have stopped him that coming down in the fourth and one They don't score. Lions win the ball game. But you know what I'm gonna do. And again, we're saying this fully understanding how poor the lions have been defensively and has got to be mission number one. For the new regime coming in. Steve, you know, it's always funny about this. And this. This goes to some of the people out there that and and you and Dan, We're talking about this right after the game, Okay, They're gonna people if they're gonna be people out there that say What does it matter? It's better that the Lions lost their five and 11 all of that. Okay, good. This isn't good for the league. This is a bad bad look for the National Football League. God forbid it happened to your team or to the Lions in a game that does matter. This makes the National Football League look bad. And Steve Ah few weeks ago when Marvin made the wasn't catch wasn't a catch against the Green Bay Packers. You and I in the interest of being fair, Okay, you and I made the exact same argument the other way. So many people were saying he caught that ball. He caught that ball, and I said, Look! The rule is clear. There has to be enough evidence to overturn it. I didn't see it. People were furious at me, Steve. I heard about it for two days on social media. Okay, And now I'm saying the same thing. It's so at least I'm consistent. There has to be Clear, clear. Proof. Overturn it. There was no clear proof. Dean freaking Blandino setting himself. It's an embarrassment for the National Football League. It really is. Well all Tracy walker because you know we have heard so much. When it comes to making a catch complete the process complete the process. He didn't complete the process. You got to complete the process. You know, we'll all Tracy Walker did. Was complete the tackle..

"Are you in? right, Welcome back, everybody. Steve Court joins me now A Z does after each and every lines game, Steven. This game, familiar script a little bit closer than a lot of games that we've seen, but really, just one of the issue defensively just couldn't make any stops right out of that final driver. They couldn't give Minnesota off the field. No doubt about it, Dan and you think I look at what the Lions have been up to over there last three ballgames? You know, they give up 37 of the Vikings today 47 to the Buccaneers 46 to the Titans. You take a look at the numbers and it's interesting and Minnesota in third down situations. Just 4 13. The problem is Throughout the game. You were making the call of nothing but Chunk yardage. 20 yards. 16 yards. 15 yards 12 yards, whatever the case may be. Did the Lions get job? Tracy Walker in particular. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Here. You have a struggling defense that finally makes a play and they score on the ensuing deal. That's 76 points. What a rip off. Yeah, No, I've that Tracy Walker call have to be explained to me. I don't get it. The Marvin Jones call that Z one that you can debate. I thought it hit the ground. When I hit the ground. He didn't maintain control. I've heard Dean Blandino said it was a touchdown. I don't know what I've been taught. It wasn't a touchdown, but the Tracy Walker call was beyond Awful and embarrassing As you mentioned, I mean, embarrassing for the league and again, you know, As soon as you talk about those things, people light up Twitter and say the team is five and 10, whatever I get that, But this is a football game, and this is two teams fighting for victory. And that's a bad call that that changed this game. Absolutely changed. This game set Minnesota up to score a touchdown and go up by eight points when it would have been a two point game and the Lions had the ball back. So it was inexplicable. It was horrible. I'm sure we'll hear game changing it. My guess is they'll say they made a mistake. But who cares about it now? It doesn't help when they say that we've been through that before. Hey, players of the game. My friend Marvin Jones jumps out and Stafford jumps out. Matthew was just terrific doing what he does today playing with the with the ribs, playing with the ankle, playing with the thumb, 20 out of 31 to 93 3 touchdowns. Marvin Jones, eight catches 180 Yards, two TDs. Stafford also had an interception, but Just has defined himself over the past several weeks going out. They're playing it far less than 100% and Danny certainly part of the conversation of late and, of course, moving forward that of Matthew Stafford's future here with the Detroit Lions, but Take it to another level. Marvin Jones Jr. I have loved watching this, dude where the hunt little blue and silver for the last five seasons. You know what you're getting. 50 50 balls or 80 20 with this guy. Hey, plays the game. Well, there's certainly chemistry don't know what the Lions plans are. Let me just say this about Marvin Jones during his time in Detroit. He is a gamer. That's all I'm question gives. You always got fights like you know what out there and Marvin's kind of guy you love to have. When you look at the list of free agents, the lines of signed that have been good signings. Marvin Jones would be on that list that you have done everything they could have asked him to do, and Maura and You know it. You move on from here and then this isn't the great unknown that they're moving into. Now, Steve, and we'll see where it goes. A lot of decisions that have to be make starting with the guys that will be making those decisions. So Um Well, see, That's all I got for you. My friend will lot of questions to be answered. Looking forward to it. No question. I know you guys have a lot coming up in the postgame show, so hang in there. We'll be right back to you. Lomas is going to talk with their level coming up. We'll have a couple of the players of the game as well. Stick with us much more coming up. This is the Detroit Lions Radio network. Titi believes that leaders do what's right. Not what's easy. "The Bengals is thrown a pass deep down the sideline, trying to get a J. Green a reception and maybe a touchdown but look like an interception by the Ravens Chuck Clark, John Harbaugh all challenged. The play was overturned, so they called it an interception. The Ravens trying to run out the clock. I guess the only suspense here will the Ravens break the NFL record for most rushing yards in a game. They're over 400 right now. 403. The record is 4 23. So we'll see what they do on this Last possession here, the bangle. It's a dreadful end to a terrible season. They will finish 4 11 and one and unfortunately, it looks like the last game for AJ Green as the Bengal not going to be a good one, not a single catch. A J. Green and six targets today again. Two minutes to go. 38 3 all Ravens, All right, Who would have figured what we've been seeing today in Detroit? Certainly the most entertaining game of the day here is done kneecap with more Oh, entertaining in a number of ways Rich Looks like the Lions just got themselves within two points. Think it was a handoff to maybe carry on Johnson. There was AH cluster of bodies, but the Lions finally find the end zone about a couple minutes after that, they really should have the first time. Matthew Stafford hit Marvin Jones on a picture perfect 44 yards past. It went to review for some reason, and it was overturned because they said Marvin Jones didn't control the ball throughout the catch. The funny thing is, Don't replay ever show the ball hitting the ground. That was after a previous flag on Kirk, Cousin being sacked by Tracy Walker. And if I came out for roughing the passer on the cleanest quarterback sack you could ever ask for A pair of officiating decisions really a 13 point turnaround. However, the Lions do come back and go the rest of the 40 yards on the feet still to get the touchdown now, going for a two point conversion, the touchdown with the Andres Swift two yard touchdown run by the running back, he running back now going for the two point conversion to try to tie it. If so, over time, a possibility, if not Oh, Stafford throws incomplete and the Vikings will hold on to this two point lead with 4 26 to go at the monumental in terms of player in terms of draft picks, something I'm sure you'll talk about later in the show. 37 35 Vikings, with the lead for 26 to go and high drama destroyed Rich all right, the Vikings and six and nine lines at five and 10 and they are looking for a new coach. And general manager Elsewhere, the bills all over the Dolphins up by 30 49 19. The Ravens win there in 38 3 on the Bangles at the two minute warning punch their ticket the Browns with an eight point lead in the two minute warning over the Steelers, the Cowboys down by four to the Giants, with Midway through the Fourth of Patriots lead the Jets 28 14 and the Bucks on top of the Falcon's 37 27 this season. I own.

"Trailing in this game by a score of 60, Nothing Kirk cousins so far in the game three. Excuse me two out of six for 20 yards. He's been sacked once will be old choir got him. Running game for Minnesota three carries for eight yards. Cousins is also of his six attempts to of the passes have been deflected the line. Like he's come out and I've formation Prices. Turns gives the Madison Madison finds cut back Lane gets to the 35 yard line. Picks up five on first down Christian Jones made to stop. It'll be second in five. And that doesn't bode well for Minnesota being behind because they have the highest run percentage of any NFL team. So we know where they make their bread and brothers running the ball, even though Dalvin Cook getting here today, Game six on the carry, so it's second down in four. Vikings from their own 36. License up under center Madison the single back because he's fakes to him rolls right sets and throws too wide for his intended target at a Justin Jefferson that time. Em again. Then I just think that early pressure has affected Kurt cousins. Simple rollout should have been a nice toss and catch for him. He just threw it too far out for us Receiver. So again, early pressure has affected him in this game. Viking zero for three on third down so far today, looking at a third and four here from their own 36 yard line down seven. Nothing in the first There's the shotgun sap cousins throws caught first down, Jefferson. Gets the midfield for his taking down now to move the change of money or a warrior with the tackle, but it's a 13 yard game. And we know what's at stake for Justin Jefferson again trying to pass Randy malls for rookie record for the team. But also he's a guy that they're trying to get the record for for rookie receivers period. He's been great this year is a rookie said he was down to Shyam midfield of the 49 yard lines. That's first intent for the Vikings from there. Carson's up under center. He turns fakes to Madison such deep in the pocket throws. Now it is Madison Lions territory. 45 down to the 40 involves to the 36 yard line. It's a 15 yard game, Tracy Walker made to stop at a first down from Minnesota. The Lions Jump up six. Nothing Vikings on the move. Now in a lion territory of the 36 a lot of the Kirk cousins shots come off the play action pass,.
