"And then I was like, her skin looks amazing. And then I went home and I got cold. She's a walking billboard for Terry's work, I guess. Right? She looked like glowing. We know it's not just the facialist with most of these celebrities. Well, yeah. Okay. Yes. But in real life, Demi looks great is what you're saying. Whereas I'm sure you've seen other celebrities are like, cool. She had great cosmetic work by some doctor. Absolutely. Absolutely. Her skin looked amazing. She had like nothing on. She had like a big smile on her face. She seemed great. She's like beautiful energy. And I was like, who is her, who is her facialist? And then people were talking about her and I was like, oh, yes, it's Terry. So I've not seen Terry in a few months. So I need to go see her. I see her three times a year. What else do I do for self care? I mean, I have been talking to, especially my mom friends or my friends who work in service industry, like anyone who works in client work, I've been talking about how important it is for me to remind myself every day that I'm a giver. So I have to remind myself every day that I'm actually the main character in my own life. That's a big one. Yeah. And I'm like, I'm the main character. I'm not here solely to serve other people. I don't know if Transcendental Meditation has mantras, but I like this for you if it does. I am kind of like, I have my own needs and wants. What do I need and want today? Once those are met, I can also meet other people's needs and wants. So I am the main character. I'm taking care of myself. I'm also helping all of these other people through their scrapes. Nothing changes. But let me just remember that I'm a person. I do not exist solely to serve. Does that make sense? Yeah, no, I'm sure it's different for everyone. And you need to find the place that lets you be your own person, not just a giver. I'm going to take from you, though, this story in this podcast. Just warning you now, I'm going to be one of those succubuses. Do succubuses suck? I don't even actually know. If you don't mind, we're going to talk about some beauty news because now we know who you are. We have a little bit more of your background. Now I'm like sitting here thinking I want to get off of the podcast and learn about Transcendental Meditation, but we'll save that till afterwards. Would you like to talk with me about the beauty news? Shall we get into that? Please. I would love to. I miss this. I miss this so much. This is so fun. Let's do it. The biggest beauty news of the week is, of course, Beyonce starting a hairline. Maybe. What is that? Yeah. So that was like a reveal on Instagram, right? Was it with like the items on her dresser? Well, that's what I was confused by. So for those who didn't see this Instagram post, it's like it's be look and be in front of the mirror with a little curling wand. And then we slide through, we see her daughter getting her hair done, I think. And then there's a post that, yes, she's doing a hairline. So first of all, I guess you've been watching since Foxy Brown ended. And then the pandemic made the celebrity beauty boom. Like every celebrity has a line. Does this give you an eye roll? What's your general take on the whole thing? I have a lot of thoughts on this because I used to be because I used to represent actors. And so you were a template. Yes. Yeah. You know, the behind the scenes. Yes, I do. So I've been around famous people for most of my career. And let me tell you, when a big agency signs a big client, the hope is to find as many revenue revenue streams as possible. So like this is always something that you're working toward is like, okay, what are the three things you want to do? You want to act, you want to write, you want to direct, you want to produce, you want to be in commercials, you want to own a company. What is the company? What is the thing you're interested in? So it's some like people are always working on this in the background going, what's the company you are going to own? What is the company that we will take public like that is that is really an acting job is nothing compared to like an honest company or like, you know, Jessica Simpson's shoe line. And I think right now the moment seems to be this beauty product stuff. I mean, Rihanna has done an amazing job. A lot of people have done an amazing job. And so everyone, of course, is saying, Hey, like, I'm interested in that. Where's my piece of the it also comes from, like, a lot of actors feel like their shelf, their shelf life is not super long, especially women in this business are like, well, how long can I really do this for only because the world is telling them. So it comes from a place of fear and desire for financial security for generations. My feeling with Beyonce's hairline is, I mean, yes, a lot of them are eye rolls, but I also have to congratulate them for trying to take a piece of like an ever growing market. And especially a woman of color, because like, let everyone every woman of color have it. Let everyone strive. You know, like, we can't like be welcome. Yeah, we can start talking on market saturation when then when there's like three celebrity black lines, we go like, there should be 30. There should be 50. Sorry, Tracy Ellis Ross already did it. You're not allowed. Exactly. I wouldn't want it to become a conversation that's like driven by this kind of scarcity mindset of like, there's only room for two Indian ladies making samosas or like like whatever it is. It's like, you know what? People love her. They're curious. People like to try new things. Like it's supposed to be fun, right? It is fun for us. So it is a little bit of an eye roll, but also like, what's it going to be? It's going to be fun. She doesn't disappoint. I hope I think so. I think all of what you said is true. But the thing that confuses me a little about a bit about this is like Beyonce is like above the regular celebrity level for me, where like, even if she had a team who was like, we need to diversify our revenue streams, like, can't you just see Beyonce being like, that's for the peons, not me. I'm Beyonce level. You know what I mean? Like, I don't think she had to do this money -wise or career lunch out, even if she can't be touring for the rest of her life, like she's going to be fine. Nobody has to do it, but they're all afraid of running out of money. Let me tell you.

"Yes, we're here every single Wednesday. Please do follow our show in Apple podcasts or Spotify so you don't miss an episode. We bring you hashtag damn good product review episodes where we share what's worth your money and what's not. We also speak to incredible guests like pillow talk derm, Shawnee Darden, makeup by Mario, who else Bobby Brown, Tracy Ellis Ross, Victoria Beckham. I mean, the list goes on, Kate Hudson, you know, there's just so many name drop name drop. Yes, name drop. Well, the name dropping is going to continue because today we are welcoming one of the biggest trend setters in beauty and style. Hailey Bieber, she's the founder and creative director of road. Yes, we caught up with Haley alongside road CEO Melanie bender when they were both in town to officially launch road in Canada and honestly, that was a personal career high for me. Sitting down with Hailey and Melanie, it was a full hour, no security guards insight. Haley was in full glam and she is beyond stunning in person. You guys, she was wearing leather booty shorts with black tights, this long camel wool coat with these giant power shoulders, like four inch stilettos, very Saint Laurent, that next level Polish, you know, her hair was slicked back. It was like a dream. I couldn't believe she was like two feet in front of me. Yeah, and she was just so sweet as well. And her skin honestly everyone up close. It is just flawless. And I love meeting Melanie, honestly, she, before she became road CEO, she was the founding president of versed. So a lot of people might be familiar with that mass market, skin care brand, and prior to versed Melanie was VP of marketing and brand development for who what where, where she helped incubate first and merit beauty, which I know is popping off now too. For sure. And I'm sure most of you are already aware, Haley launched her direct to consumer brand road named after her middle name in 2022. It's a line of well edited essentials, really just two skin care products so far and the lip treatments and they really embody that clean girl glazed donut aesthetic that Haley is so well known for. And carlene honestly, I think what surprised me when this brand came out of the gate is honestly how affordable it is. Have you tried it? I have. I have. There's the peptide glazing fluid, which is kind of like an under layer, a serum. I would say it's like a serum cream hybrid. And that gives you just your first layer of Dewey hydration. You can wear it on its own. I think if it's the summer or you have really oily skin. But because I'm very dehydrated, I use the barrier restore cream on top and layer them up. So it does give you a bit of that glow that she's so well known for, but what I actually appreciate most about this line is just that it isn't a lot of gimmicks. It actually, when they talk about just those essentials, it's all about key ingredients that are well have a lot of science behind them like niacinamide, peptides, hyaluronic acid. But there's no scent, so it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin, and it just does what it says. It hydrates your skin. I mean, I'm here for that. Yeah, and I personally love the peptide lip treatments. So there's unscented, there's salted caramel, and there's watermelon. And it kind of is just like very nourishing lip treatment. It's got Shea butter in there and Koopa Sal butter, hyaluronic acid. And I just love how juicy and foliar lips look. And we were among the first in North America to try the new flavor, the passion fruit. So I actually think that one is my new favorite. I love it. It's like so juicy and great for summer. They put the new lip treatment tube on our play setting at the road party that we went to the night after our interview. So it's quite a surreal 24 hours, right? Oh my God, I've been telling everybody I felt like I was at their second wedding or something like that because it was so intimate. There was only 40 members of the press. The food was amazing. Your glass was never empty. And they were just going around like taking pictures with everyone, including myself, including you, Jill, when I say they, I mean Hailey, and Justin, because he was there as well. You know? And she was taking pictures with everyone. It was so intimate, really it was my Cinderella moment. It really was. And he was DJing the vent, like his playlist was popping. He cranked it up and like every beauty editor that was there and influencer, got out of their seats, started dancing. It was such a vibe that never happens. At beauty events, but at one point he walked by us and I said, hey, I really like your hat because I was kind of obsessed with it. It's a Blue Jays hat that normally is like royal blue, but his was like this color. Yeah. And he literally took his hat off of his head and hat in hand said to me, do you want it? And I don't know what, my polite Canadian came out. And I was like, oh no, no, it's okay. I just wanted to know where it was. Who was from and who made it, and he was like, oh no, you can have it. And I was like, no, no, I'm good. And then I'm thinking in my mind, why did I not just take it? Because you probably get a new one. Every other day. Like, oh my gosh. Anyways, it was a surreal day at night. So let's get into it in today's episode. We get Hailey's exact skin care routine. We get some scoop from Melanie on what the brand is cooking up next. I think we may have seriously gotten some scoop there. Yes. And we find out the one beauty hack that Hailey learned from her mom and now she does it all the time and even Justin does it. So they both are sparing by that. That was a fun little scoop as well. We also find out the nail look that she's planning on wearing for Coachella. And stay tuned to the end for a fun round of rapid fire where Haley reveals her ultimate safe space. The one thing that nobody knows about her and her latest belly laugh.

"I'm vintage. 20 plus years. Yeah, that makes sense, but ouch. All right. Well, who do you think is completely different though? Looking, they completely redid that dress. I love the new iteration. Is it just the Peekaboo of the left? Look at the waistband. Look at the boobs. I think it's the angle. I think it's the angle of the photos. I definitely think they added the little. But the waistband. Look, there's a waistband. Blown out. No, I think she I will say there's something kind of fun and magical about your hair being down. Well, I think that's more like daytime, but I liked it pulled up because then it makes it very cocktail nighttime. Yeah, but they look both look great. They both look great and also one is actually wearing it in one's modeling it for a runway. So it's just a different kind of thing. I think they both are great, but I feel like Kendall's doing this sort of vintage thing now. All right, mag thee stallion and Tracy Ellis Ross both were spotted in this aqua blue dress. Can someone tell us if this is bottega? I think it is. It is bottega. Okay. What do you think? I'm obsessed with this dress. I am too, by the way. It's very like texting her after. Yeah, it's cheerleader goes to prom, but like an adult prompt. She's wearing a pom pom. The pom pom. She's wearing the pom pom. Give me a thought. I don't want to add any more on my hips. That's for me. I'm kind of obsessed with the Ahai boot moment and anytime you can work that in. I think it's just a fun fantasy thing that, you know, you might have one pair and they rarely get worn. I love the boots, but I wish you guys sleek. We can keep talking about it, but that is it for us today, tune in tomorrow because Sterling K Brown is telling us all about life after this is us. Kelly like we have to help this museum. It was chaired by jesse royalty timothy shower. May billy bush amana gorman naomi asaka. The theme was in america alexa of fashion. Not in america. The samantha morton movie okay theme as usual very loose. Yeah it was any old fucking thing. No one loves to do the theme ever. And it's and tired of the articles. Always say so. It's so broke the met gala fashion rules and looked great. How about you wear wet. You're fucking told to be wearing it right. It's more fun that way. It gives it a purpose as opposed to fifty. Stylus agreed on this thing to make you look outrageous as opposed to. Oh you have a little bit of wit going on and came up with something that here to the theme in an interesting way. I do say that while. Also loving what. Kim kardashian war i also liked what she wore and i felt like she got nothing but dragged for it. Yeah i mean. Here's the thing balenciaga. It's not always good. Sure case in point the queen of the meg. Allah was maybe not thrown but rena. It was okay it was. It was fine but it wasn't what you were expecting from her as like a show stopper especially since. She made us wait as long as she's been waiting for this album like she's like on the last person who's gonna walk out and then you just come out. Wearing a balenciaga puffer. Okay grow puffy black dress. I liked the headpiece on it. That was kind of the coolest part for me the way it was super bowl g. and billowy. It's the kind of dress that makes you think. Oh she must be pregnant or something. Meanwhile tracy ellis ross looked great. In a balenciaga blue jacket so it is what it is. She's a celebrity. You kind of need. Because she's always going to be invited to these events you like her. She has a personality and she believes in starpower. She's somebody who is clearly her mother's daughter so you know it's like jane fonda thing of like i have my serious causes et cetera. But also really is important for me to look like. I belong on a red carpet. So before we get to the Tragic moments on the runway. What were your favorite looks. Gosh i just wanna say. Kim kardashian and she was covered head to toe and it was a black long silky garment. That was maybe my favorite of the night. Otherwise i would have to go again with billy isla. She chose oscar de renta and it's very marilyn monroe right like she had like the blonde hair. It was a kind of baby. Pink colored dress almost washed her out but didn't so good color choice because she is right. And if i wear baby pink you're all you're gonna think as well louis really pink anyway. No she looked right. What were yours. She's feeling her fancy this era. I think i really liked this. Billy era and i think the album's good. I actually haven't listened to it since it came out. But i do like the album more than casey's anyway casey at the met gala. She did not she was she was that she was at the met gala. It was cute just like this album. Yeah we'll get to.

"Are you coop? That kind of surprised me But like 100 and 15 of their stores? Yes. Yeah. I mean, I guess it's no different than made wellbeing at Nordstrom or or you know, or top shop 135 stores. Excuse me. Um, but in a in an effort to get the brand out there even more, Um, Athleta is going to have a curated selection of the Their merchandise. At R E I So I mean, I'm sure there's some crossover and for people who are regular R E I shoppers that could be can. The other thing that I saw this week is that peloton is going to have their own line of clothing already. They've had a few things, but not not much, but they're going to do a full Line of clothing. I have to tell you, I earned a T shirt. You know, when you relation to the century club when you make it to 100 rides, they send you a T shirt. Really? Yes, but it doesn't fit. Well, I was really disappointed. I was like Cody Rigsby. An alley. Love would not wear this. Why doesn't it fit? Right? Is it tight? No, It's just like it's just like the sleeves are too poufy, but it just It's just like I don't know. I just felt like it was ill fitting. And I was very disappointed that I was going to be proud to wear it. Yeah, but Anyway, they've been doing some cool stuff with, um They did a line with Adidas and they've there. I would love to know. From anyone who has bought. I mean, what a great marketing platform Because if you are a pellet in user you're sitting there staring at the instructors in their clothing for 2030 45 minutes And so if you like what they're wearing, Boom, you're like, okay, there actually. Was this really adorable pair of workout? Um, leggings that I liked enough that I went to pollutants site. To look at buying them. But you know what? I got scared off because all the reviews said that they were so thin. They were like seeds. Remember when Lululemon had the intentionally through? Yeah, that the that the material was just super thin and it didn't. It wasn't great. I mean, the The insider was telling about the collection, which is going to it's going to be a mix of men's women's and gender neutral, um, costume between 15 to $118. And that it's going to be direct competition to Lululemon and Nike. Well, so quality is there. I'm just Yeah, I'll be. I'll be curious to see it. And you know who's going to run that division? Who? The wife of the CEO of pellets? John Foley, is the CEO. Yeah, His wife is right in jail. Foley is going to be running this. We do have pellet in showrooms here in town. I mean, they're in a lot of cities now, but I mean, we have one at Mall of America. We have one at Galleria, so hopefully they'll have the clothing there and you'll be able to actually shop it in person to see how it see how it looks in. And where's Um, How about our friend Tracy Ellis Ross? She keeps busy. Yes, she does. She is working with J crew. And I like this partnership a lot. And boy J crew needs to do something. They do A and they've got great. Commercials that I've seen running with her. Oh, really? I Yeah. I thought I thought on actually on Instagram. Okay, but I'm sure it will be running. You know, like a video, not just video. No, a video of her in different out finishing being funny. She's just rationing, fashioning cute, throwing a basketball and, you know, Okay being with other people, and this is not Tracy Ellis. Designing for J crew. This is just her being their spokes model, right? Hunt face with their fault collection, which looks Well, she makes it look great. Yeah, well, she looks good in just about anything. Yeah. I mean, it's easy for her to pieces that you were coveting. There was kind of an overview of this of the collection. I don't know that all these pieces are online. Coveting. I think they are online. She had a double breasted blazer and pants that were that was cute and puffer jackets. Um, yeah. Here it is. The new fall collection. There you go. Oh, yeah. Make a scene ce any with Theresa? I just like there's a lot. She looks great in the pale. Um, the pale. He used the pale yellow to pale. Pale pink to Yeah. Great jackets. Yes, Yes, sure. Um, no, I think you know, I think they did a smart and also in a sexy slip dress. Silk charmeuse slip dress That was, you know, Pretty on her. Yeah, Yeah. Yeah, We're if you if you've kind of been if you haven't checked out J crew in a while, it might be a reason to give them another look. And I think that pale pink trench coat is going to be a hot item. I think you're probably right about that. Yeah, thing at the other one that I found really interesting is Banana Republic because Banana Republic Um, I don't know if a lot of people even realize that banana Republic in their heyday had a whole sort of safari. Look. Oh, my gosh. I remember when they started, I am going to completely date myself. Here. Okay, well, that it's any big surprise, but, um If you if you hearken back to the glory days on Nicollet Mall when the conservatory exists. Oh, okay. I There was a banana republic in the conservatory. This is when it was like super exciting. You would dress me up to go downtown, and there's a restaurant in the lobby there. That was cool. It was a weird shopping center. Do you remember because there was nothing central about it. You had to like we've around the aisles, and that was part of its downfall. But there was a big banana republic. So that's the first place I remember going to it, and it was all safari. It was nothing like what it has come to be. And I remember being in the shop. I think for the first time maybe it was in Florida. And it was so unique and so much fun the way it was laid out with all of the kind of equipment and they have decided, and it'll be really interesting to see. You know what happens that they want to go back to their roots, and they are revamping their brand identity and this is going to happen. They're launching on September 28th. And they said that their new positioning is reflected through a campaign dubbed Imagined Worlds, which reflects Banana Republic as it was originally conceived a fictitious territory far away unknown place that is part of explorers, folklore and adventurers lore. So you know, I think it's going to be very interesting to see If they can do is they're going to modernize their stores. They're going to obviously really changed the appearance of their story. That's what I'm curious about, because I mean that's going to require a major change to their stores, which just look very kind of standard. Absolutely. There's nothing interesting nothing about, although they did try a couple years ago, pre pandemic To really elevate the Mall of America surgery. Remember that they painted one of the walls black and they tried to make it a little more interesting, but not Not like this. A have struggled over the years, and they feel that doing this and bring it back to its roots. They want to do more casual looks. And they said that are meant to redefine how the brand thinks about fashion like Shangri La, Middle Earth Westerners or Wauconda. Banana Republic is an imagined world. So you know, it's supposed to be more of a imagined world of high rise tapered cargo pants. Yes, I will say I'm on their website right now and fall. I mean, I don't know. I just get excited about fall in general, but in and I feel like we didn't really have a fashion season last year, So I mean, it does look really fresh. There's a lot of like Cream tones and, um, you know, and browns and then bright pops of yellow and tomato red. It's a good idea. I think you know, it's a unique musician, because I think would have just another story. It's just become like basic like work pants and tops. It will be interesting to see what happens and quickly I do want to mention, Um, target is launching their first Ever product assortment for Latin heritage Month is that start begins on the 15th of September and goes till October 15 through thereabouts. Okay, and they are. This is the first time they've done this. They're going to have a complete assortment of Clothing for adults and Children, Spanish writing, UM books movies, and they'll also have some Latino owned brands like even those frozen food company, Cocina 54. As well as exclusive products that are designed by Latin artists..

"Airs thursdays on free form. Coming up emmy. Nominations are happening right now. Snubs the surprises are expert is here to unwrap it. All after the emmy nominations actually still have their records. Yeah that's how fresh they are right now and here to break it all down is elizabeth wag meister senior correspondent at riot on the spot. Because things are really just coming out. Feel free to check your phone if you need. It's right here on cnn she's prepared. Let's talk drama. Who's nominated in drama. Okay so here's my big takeaway. So far there is a lot of network. Tv which is really rare the enemies but it's usually streaming streaming streaming right. This is us was nominated. I know you asked drama. Since they just came out in my mind is everything. Go throw a ton okay. So blackish is nominated. Keenan thompson got nominated for his new show. Which is so well deserved. And do he's been around forever egg shell which is amazing. Does he needed some kudos but for drama. You know this is us has been in that category many times before but for so far throughout the run. It's a big deal also. Richardson was nominated in the drama. Category await. Did you love richardson on s. Okay did you either love it. I'm sorry okay. go on well you know. Who is kim carter. Things are still coming out. Yes but did. I may destroy you. Get nominated for anything finally. Yes so i made destroy nominee. An michaela call was nominated. Now i have to tell you. That category is stopped. You have win slip. Who was nominated from. Mary by the way in incredible. Yes yes incredible. Incredible jean smart. I swear to you outdid her in supporting you okay. So here's a fun fact. I actually don't know. Jean smart was nominated i supporting but she could be a double nominee. She was definitely nominated for her leading role in how much she i've watched so much this year. I know so much. But let's talk about this lead actress in a comedy series. You have bryant kaley cuoco in the flight attendants allison janney. Tracy ellis ross. Jean smart. I love all of these women. That was right thing. Jean smart is the one to win. But also i have. A question was ending a comedy. Okay so that's a great question and so prepared interview. Somebody better be watching. You know it all okay. So here's the thing. There's always this question when you go into the emmys. What's a comedy. What's drama and the answer is is. It's all strategy all of these networks and streaming platforms. They say we wanna put our show into the category that can give it the best shot but we do have to talk about flight attendant because kaley cuoco fun fact has never been nominated for an emmy. She's been on tv since she was out of the womb. She's never been nominated for her first nomination and this is such a passion project for her. The flight attendant. She's an executive producer. It was her first project obviously after big bang theory. So that's not a comedy correct. I don't think it on tv. I don't think it's corky work. Well let's look at lead actress in a drama. Because we have that still coming for you guys and i wanna see you have do you have. Libya coleman imma corn. And oh my god. Elizabeth moss while empty rodriguez from me smile. Oh okay we'll take it in this category. Iv chilled okay. That is tough. Obviously award voters. They loved the crown but often what we see is one. There's people from the same cast split the cancel each other out. I think the crown olivia colman category. She's every don't be elisabeth moss to feel like she but she's also been do. We've seen that face time. Been like it's time to not give it to her. She might be in the best directing category because she directed two or three of the episodes. This season in handmaid's tale. But i think if anybody watched handmade sell this season they know that this is the greatest season television i long for. Here's the thing one before. So that already gives her kind of a leg up. Because i mean voters do love to give the awards to their favorites so yeah. I think that this is a stacked category. I think that she totally could win. Again olivia colman. That's really hard to ensure one's incredible in the crowd is my favorite crunch me. I love it i love. This is my favorite season. I watched seasons like well. Do you have a little bit more time. Because these are still pushing welcome all of them. We'll be back with more emmy talk. Stay with us. Welcome back we have more breaking emmy nomination news. Thank you elizabeth for staying with us. Let's talk comedy. The nominees blackish cobra kai emily harris. Hats the flight attendant. The kaminsky me at ten fifteen and ted lasso again cobra kai comedy. Yeah the comedy drama conversation. We're just. We're going to be done with that for today. We're not going to solve this here. But we're going to talk about the first major surprise.

"Dressing up like a lady? All the time? My whole life I've been dressing up. Like a man. This is me. You know, when transparent first came out. I just didn't understand why, you know it had to be assist guy. I understand money, and you have to get a green lit And you know Jeffrey Tambor is a good actor. He did a good job. But there's so much trans town who could have done that role just as well, if not better, and not, you know, sexually assault people on set. Well, there's your stuff when I think that's very real, and that's something we're very aware of, as any marginalized person understands what safety means and when you see The sacrifices made for the bottom line to make money on your back. You know you're not gonna be safe. And I mean this was a large part. Why? In making disclosure, we prioritized hiring trans people. Wanted everyone behind the camera as well as in front of the camera. As you see, but everyone behind the camera, we prioritized to be trance, and if we couldn't hire trans person we meant toward one. If you're so excited about telling trans stories you have to really think about it in a holistic way. Is there something that you see, particularly missing in how those characters are portrayed. I want complicated stories. You know the antidote to negativity. I do not believe this positivity. I do not believe sterilized positive stories will make the world a better place, I think complicated, nuanced. Messy that give a full picture of a trans person life. No, we do not need to shy away from the horrors because they're real, but we need to show them in a universe that also has love and community and you know the full experience of being human. Laverne Cox makes a point about cancel culture being used as an excuse not to take up this issue because good liberals don't want to look like they don't get it. Through the entire making of disclosure. Laverne and I were very much on the same page. I think it's important that we're very critical of our cultural products and that people are held accountable to that critique. But I also think it's really important that people get second chances that they're given the opportunity to learn and grow. You know, we used a proven free as an example of that film. We open up with some really problematic things, she said on her shows. How do you hide your peanuts? And then we close the film with literally saying she's evolved with someone like her, who was in such a position of cultural power. It's so important that we give people a chance to evolve. Not only when you're you know this mega star, but I think when we see a society that creates the room and resource is for people to evolve and grow and be accountable. We're gonna live in a much better place. What kind of impact do you think the films had? So far? We immediately we're hearing from people in positions of power. Talking about how they saw the film a list celebrity like Ryan Reynolds or Tracy Ellis Ross, saying that this has changed how they will see and make films. It was a press release about how Halle Berry was going to take on a role of a trans man, and then she or her team watch disclosure, and they walked away from the role, so it's become a tool to help the industry do better, And that's very exciting stuff I'm even more passionate about is hearing how a group of California judges used clips from disclosure to educate themselves around the bias.

Welcome thank you for having me. I'm so glad to talk to you all the jobs all the hats. Britney's let's the first of all start by celebrating your most recent interview on undistracted swat is big. Y'all it is. The movement that ensured the decisive election of joe biden kamla harris. It is a movement that showed out twice in georgia. So that of course is representative. Ianna presley of massachusetts brittany. Tell us about it and tell us what else is on your mind. I mean what's not to love about ianna presley. She is incredible and authentic. And you know. I'm in love with anybody. Who says policy is their love language because she understands so clearly that it's not just about warm and fuzzy rhetoric that it is actually about empowering and impactful policy and real change so i absolutely loved interviewing her. You know we've had folks from all over the spectrum. We've had politicians like her. We've had artists like tracy ellis ross and america ferrera. Our viewpoint is always to figure out how we build the largest army of undistracted people possible. We borrowed the name of the podcast from tony morrison when she talked about the function of racism. Being to distract you to keep you from doing your work. So what will it look like. And what can we accomplish if we stay focused and keep doing our work So really. That's what i'm obsessed with all the time i'm trying to create a world where everybody can thrive especially the most marginalized especially black girls like us And so i am. I am obsessed with anything that stands in the way of that. I'm obsessed with the radical adding it anna obsessed with building the systems and institutions and spaces that allow us to thrive. Well britney. you're absolutely in the right place. Because our body politic is one hundred percent in favor of every single thing that you were talking about and now the good stuff is happening here. Exactly we'll listen. what about you for. What's on your mind. You know. I've been thinking a lot about the relationship of white americans to this moment in history meaning right now. I really feel like it's a save your own life moment for white america. I don't think a lot of white americans have realized how much anti black racism leads to domestic terrorism and leads to declines in the economy. So you know for example in the news industry there's a lot of threats signaling about the threat of blackness but we don't think about the ways in which anti blackness is a much bigger and deeper threats. So that's what's on my mind will it. Listen i've gotta tell you guys in terms of what i've been thinking about this week. We hit the enforcement and very grim. Terrible milestone of of half a million americans who have perished in the almost year Since this pandemic i Our country and while that Certainly was a difficult day. I think for our country. It was a day that was marked by The new president the vice president and we were able to have a moment of collective grief as a nation which is not something that i think has happened nearly enough to be able to try to grapple with this as a country to try to get back to of that initial idea around this pandemic of the thought that may be. We're all in this together. Really felt like a bit of light in in what hopefully You know the dark period before things are really start to get better. We move to the other side of this. Absolutely so yeah. Look y'all know. I love talking about what. What black women's political leadership looks like what it can look like and with that i want to hop over to new york. City with a mayoral hopeful. My wiley who You know just had a profile. In the cu- rebecca tracer rotor encourage folks to read it. If they haven't seen it. I found it very fascinating. Learned a lot about her. But i listened to this clip From from this mayoral hopeful. This is our journey and it would be my great honor to travel that road hand in hand with people of our city as your next mayor suck will say i don't sound like snares or look like them or think like them and i say yes i don't. That is the point so widely recently got an endorsement from eleven ninety nine the city's biggest for how much of a game changer is is for her. It's huge it. Also points out that Progressives aren't always what they appear to be. And what i'm referring to there. Is that the current mayor. Bill de blasio has been roundly criticized for any number of things his handling of the schools in new york new york is the most segregated city educationally on and on and on and i think that She is someone who's trying to redefine what it means to be a progressive new york city mayor. She you know didn't qualify for public matching funds. So i think that this in particular is important as a validated. There's so many different types of validations in politics and so i'm looking forward to seeing how things unfold. Yeah i think you make a really good point about the matching funds because you know at the nineteenth we we certainly talk about electability right in. What makes somebody electable. And as far as we're concerned it's electing somebody. What makes them electable like that. The criteria right but but we know the kind of barriers and hurdles that black women seeking public office in particular. I can face in terms of fundraising to get that early support to be viable right and we in that that field of folks who was looking to be the next mayor of new york is already beginning to to get quite crowded but You know it is remarkable to meet you. Think about in two thousand twenty one that New york city You know one of one of the icon. Ick cities of this country has never had a black woman mayor. You know maybe She's the one to do it. I don't know. But i'm certainly very interested to to see What happens in that context. So i want to turn now to a topic. We've been you know we've been talking about here at our body politic for the past few weeks and that is obviously the aftermath of the events of january six and the insurrection. So let's talk about. The latest authorities are saying that there was a wider conspiracy that led to the stormy the capital More have been added to the list of those already charged. Britney you talked about the investigations happen about this representative presley on your podcast. Let's take a listen. This is much about accountability as it is prevention because donald j trump to be not only held accountable but barred from running for public office ever again and so we also that donald j trump is not the only culpable person that he had many accomplices. Who aided and abetted in the perpetuating of this big lie. Yes a britney. what do you make. A further investigation isn't going to be.

And they've got everything from Barbie dolls that Represent Maya Angelou and Rosa Parks, calendar stationery. You know everything that you can think of, and she was saying how proud her grandmother would be who she came to America, she said her grandmother did 50 years ago. With hopes and dreams and to see that her daughter is ah, part of this. It's really a wonderful thing. And obviously I think we've we've talked about on the show that when Target reopened their Lake Street store When they remodeled that, um, they began curing the Black excellence clothing line that was designed by Houston White of Minneapolis. So they've done all of these things. And then of course, there is the backlash that comes because there are always going to be people who can find Problems, and there were people who didn't like what some of the things said on the T shirts Now bear in mind. All of these things were done by black people. That's the crazy thing. People'll jump on Twitter and start criticizing how did this get through? And how did that get through? I don't like this saying And this is this is not sensitive. But right. These air coming directly from small brands owned by black entrepreneurs, and somebody on Twitter wrote, You can spot like black people without pointing out our pain. But you know, as I say they've you know, these were not done by outsiders. These were done by black designers. And I guess I feel it's one of those things that you know. It's like anything else is there. Maybe something that okay, maybe that one shouldn't have been selected or whatever. But I do think in. That is one of the big problems with Twitter. I feel like as I've gotten older I've become more myself and the more I am myself. The more my life looks like me and it's not the same as anybody else's and so it's been this process of first coming to know myself then accept myself. I love myself not on every day. Be kind to myself. Even when I don't feel like I want to be and then ask myself all those questions of what I what I really want from my life talking about. Yes and it's such an intimate journey that has taken time like even after I've discovered the things I like the things I wanna do my dreams who I am then the courage to actually walk towards those things is in and of itself. Its own journey. So I've been watching you from afar and I've seen you do lots of things you the first black woman ever opened the tedtalk. That was incredible. That was one of the one of the scariest things I've ever done. That was but that was fantastic. I like that very much. I thought you were in your power but the thing I loved so much that makes my eyes water. Is that speech that you didn't glamour in two thousand seventeen and you said something at that speech that reminded me of a moment that my Angelou church with me years ago. She said when she was in a really downtime and that she was with someone who said remember God loves you and she said God loves me and the realization of that God here all the title is but you don't realize and you had one of those moments so everybody with that was for us so we walk around. Like I'm doing what I WANNA do. I'm living laugh. I'm Mike Makeup Dreams Happen. I'm putting one foot in front of the other. I'm making it all go. And then you have these moments which actually came journaling. I had broken up with somebody. We'd been broken up with each other for quite some time and somehow I was having a ton of anxiety about telling him again when a repeat had been broken up for some time I had anxiety about telling him I wanted to date other people. What is that? What is that and these are the moments that I say to myself like? What is that like the kind of question like what is running me right now like. What is this dialogue? I'm having where did it come from? Is this some tape? That's mine. Is this a cultural tape? Is this me thinking I have to ask permission of somebody to live my own life and in my journaling I wrote. My Life is mine and it just I mean I say it and it takes my breath away because one doesn't realize really particularly as a woman particularly as a black and Brown woman in this culture. In the swirl of Patriarchy and racism and sexism and all of these things these things that are sort of giving us a map that is not necessarily our own that we can actually make choices for ourselves that are not just externally for ourselves but that actually match that very quiet voice inside our hearts and it launched me into honestly the life. I'm living right now really. So did y'all hear that my life is mine. My Life Mine. I just take a minute. Take a deep breath because the echoes crazy. Are you used arena? Talking here. Seventy thousand feet was a lot of its arena talking. We're arena dog. It's just a little intimate conversation. Yes but when that realization hit you in my life is I would think that that would bring tears to your eyes and that would be. The kind of that would be like Whoa. It brought tears to my eyes also begged a lot of questions where the places where. I'm not living my own life. And so many of the epiphany moments that occur are met with grief and tears and my own judgment and then even when you have a moment like that even when I had this moment of naming those words and holding them and hearing them then also didn't just do it right away everywhere people and you know his moments. It's interesting when I did that. Speech I was terrified to do it. I felt like I needed another three days. I knew it was too long. Didn't have time to cut it down and I kept saying to myself. You are enough just as you are even if you think it should be different you get to show up just as the speeches and that works. This is fine but I was also terrified because I felt like there were such important things going on in the world and I felt like this was not an important thing to talk about the fact that Your Life Is Yours. And empowering other people do the same which it is really the only talk about important. Most important didn't even dawn on me. Then then afterwards I had a lot of shame about having revealed something so vulnerable and then it took me about two years to realize how revolutionary the thought is particularly for a woman. Yes that we know you can applaud for that. That's all of us to actually live in your own life. You know in the seventies speaking of living your own life and what bottling for other women is in the seventies for me. It was very tyler Moore. Mary Mary Richards was on TV. She was a single woman. She was a heroin but she was a fictional character. And in twenty twenty. I know you realizes that a lot of single ladies point to you as an example of what being an unmarried woman could and should look like and I imagine. That's not a role that you ever thought you'd be playing which I like. Many of us was taught to grow up dreaming of my wedding not of my life and I spent many years of my went to the choir and also waiting to be chosen. Well here's the thing I'm the chooser and I can choose to get married if I want to. But in the meantime I am choice. Family single happily gloriously single and. I do wish there were more examples and one of the reasons. I'm okay talking about it and by the way my life is mind. That speech really was geared towards that I was like you know at the time was forty five years old and single and I had just pushed out my fifth kid on television. The irony of that in that context so many people ask the question. Have you ever thought about having children like I mean my child gave my life meaning? I'm like are you saying my life is not meaningful and because of the structure that we live in. It is so easy for me to feel undermined with all the accomplishment that I've had and my accomplishments I don't mean the Walker stuff I mean like I take the garbage out before it stinks like I eat food. That's good for me. I get my sleep. I show up for my friends. And that makes life very meaningful and somehow the rug gets pulled out so quickly when people put me in the you should be married why are why aren't you married yet. Like what's wrong with you. Well you know I got that until my fifties so you got a while to go. I only have three years but people might keep asking me and I don't mind if people keep asking me because every time they asked me. It's an opportunity for me to change the narrative and expand the story of what we can be who we are as
