"The Tournament of Roses Parade has not occurred only three times during the war time years in 1942 1943 in 1945. The World War two was going on was about to be number four because the Pasadena Eternal Rose Association announced That they're unable to host a 2021 Rose parade. Let's bring in David Eat. Who's the executive director and CEO of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. He joins Freddy and Courtney. Thanks to show pencil performance line. We clearly understand what the pandemic That decisions like this David are going to be made. But when did you believe in your heart of hearts that you are going to have to make this decision that you had to make today? You know when the pandemic hit back in mid March, we thought, you know we're going to be a stay at home order for a couple weeks and then you know everything would be back T usual, but obviously the pandemic continued to spread. Andi. Obviously, the loss of life and what we saw going on around the country and really, you know, back in early April really kind of raised the red flag that we need to look at what the future that parade was going to be in. Would we be able to host a parade? And obviously we've been working since that time on the feasibility of doing the parade, and it really just came down to a point in time where You know, Based on the current restrictions and guidelines that are in place here is result of covert 19 and in accordance with California Governor Newsome's face for reopening schedule. It just wasn't possible for us to host the Rose Parade. Coming up on January 1st, David take us through the preparation process. How long does the planning process go for an event of this magnitude? Because you mentioned just going back to April when we thought we weren't sure how long the pandemic was going to stretch and just the restrictions placed on phasing for reopening to be at this point right now, I'm sure that this is a decision. That's you guys have been milling over for quite some time. Yeah, most people don't realize you know, it takes a full year to plan the Rose parade. And you know when you think about it, it's a global event. It's It's obviously a huge 1,000,000,000 audience here in the United States, but it's it's telecast around the world 220 countries. So it's a 12 month planning process. And in fact, the marching bands that participated in the parade every year are selected 18 months in advance. So you know, once we conclude a parade on January 1st, you know, we we wrap everything up with that year's parade and by January 15th were starting planning for the next year. So for us to build our floats. We really We have approximately 45 46 floor ofthe floats in the parade every year. You know those We have to start constructing those by March on DH this year again with stay at home orders. We were not able to start building our float builders. We're underneath the stay at home orders, and then it's the pandemic kept spreading. And we were really trying to analyze. If we'd be able to host a parade, we put a hold on even building floats. Due to the significant financial losses we will incur if we started building and we were not able to host a parade. So by the time we got now, Tio, you know, by the time we we've arrived here in July Where you're really far behind in our planning schedule, and that's why we had to make a decision. Now, A lot of people say Oh, can't you wait until September October? They just don't realize how much planning goes into making the Parada a reality. David eases the executive director and CEO, the Pasadena Eternal Roses talking about not having the 2021 rolls for wayward Freddie Coleman and Courtney Kronen, a Freddy and Fitz Simmons on ESPN radio and serious, excellent Channel 80 I can't even imagine making this decision and you had to make this decision for only the fourth time since its inception 18 91. We won't have a tournament Roses parade. But David after you made this, too, since you had a chance to sit back and think about making this decision, what went through your mind? Well, you know again, It's disappointing for everybody within our organization and, you know, disappointed across the country for people that tune in on New Year's Day and really look at the parade as that. That symbol of new beginnings on New Year's Day in that, you know, symbol of hope and new opportunities. Uh so we didn't take the decision lightly. But you know our number one priority had to be the health and well being of our parade participants and Spectators and our partners and our volunteers. And the reality is we just can't guarantee that safety right now with, you know, with the restrictions that are in place and the pandemic and so that's what really drove our decision. So while is extremely disappointing decision We really know in our heart apart. It's the right decision. Um, you know, we have more than anywhere from 700,000 to a 1,000,000 people that line our parade route on New Year's Eve in New Year's Day. We have hundreds of thousands people that camp out overnight. Preparing for the parade. And how do we guarantee social distancing and and no viral spread with this type of mass gathering? We just we couldn't prevent that. And so Our event would be considered what they call a mass spreading event. A super spreader and you know, one sick person could infect thousands. And at this time, you know, with our country really battling this pandemic and the loss of life The economic hardship that's been created, You know, with the loss of jobs. It's just it's not responsible for us to make a decision to move forward with pride at this time on that know David. What is the financial impact to the organization or to the city of Pasadena? Without the parade happening? Have you been able to estimate what those losses might be? Certainly you know that we We do economic impact studies every every three years, And our last study showed that on an annual basis with both the parade and our football game, so not just a parade, But the parade in the football game annually have an impact of more than $200 million in direct investment here in the Pasadena in Southern California area. So it's significant that annually and so this will have a great impact on again is cos try and recover here in Pasadena, especially restaurants and hospitality industry that's been impacted by Cove. It You know, New Year's. If you try to get a hotel room in Pasadena on new years, they're sold out. And, you know, we have hundreds of thousands of people that come to Pasadena. To see the parade in the game, and that won't happen this year. So it is a huge economic hit for our community. And then you know for the tournament itself, obviously, um, it's a significant impact financially on us as an organization. Because we will not have the revenue that we typically generate from the parade and you know, so we will be forced to dip into our reserves to make it through the next you know, 8 to 12 months. But we are prepared to come out. The other side is a viable organization and after the first year will ramp up planning for the 2022 Rose parade. David, either. Zacky, director and CEO of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses with Freddie Coleman and Courtney Cronin on Friday, and Fitz Simmons on ESPN Radio. What about the Rose Bowl? David? Because if you're not having a parade What's it like?.

"In the northwest. Don't you think and husky nation? Absolutely. It's been a long time way too long. And of course, used to be a birthright, given she win the Pac ten you go to the Rose Bowl. They did it three straight years in the early nineties two thousand one the last time, man. And now, of course, the landscape is changed for college football. And if you make the final four you don't get to come to the Rose Bowl. But now, they're back and the kids are enjoying it. They've had a great week. They're ready to play some football today. What do you think about this game? I mean, we've been talking about it a lot for the last hour and a half. So you have a great defense with the huskies, probably a defense the buckeyes haven't really faced anything similar to it. But then you have this Dwayne Haskins quarterback averaging three hundred seventy three yards per game in the air. Pretty good offense. Great defense. What gives? Well, I think Ohio states run game. Little underrated too in Washington is going to try and contain Dobbins and those running backs and still make a really good quarterback. Throw the football. Now. It's breezy down here today. It's we've had some wind gusts to forty fifty miles an hour near the San Gabriel mountains and that could play a big factor in the one hundred Rose Bowl. I think the team with the better run game today and run de France might come out the winner. I think a lot of people are are here in your words and really hoping that that's going to happen. I asked this question to a couple of our guests today. Let's talk a little bit about the Pac twelve reputation is their much writing on this game. Now when you look at the ballgames seven seven teams made it to the bowl Pac twelve teams made it to seven different bowl games. And there are three and three right now staffer winning yesterday. Fourteen thirteen yet, Oregon barely getting by Michigan state, and you had Oiseaux winning does this loss to northwestern which might be a good barometer. For this game. Remember northwestern was ending championship to the big against Ohio State. Yeah. Guys had their way with them. So I don't know that either conference Addison seasonal year as far as a bowl teams, or our strengths of power of the conference that sort of thing. So this is still a really special bowl game. And the winner feels really good about their season. You know, higher state got snubbed for the final four. They only lost one game all year, Washington. After a lot of bumps in the road, if they can do this and send their seniors abject routing miles Gaskin feel good about the two thousand eighteen sees. Yeah. I think you're right. I I'm just so excited about this game as I just mentioned there's a minutes. Go by I cannot wait for kickoff. What do you think about this? I asked Brandon Bernstein said this about coach urban Meyer stepping down as the Ohio State head coach after the game is a lot of a lot of people are going to be talking about it. They have been they're going to be talking about during the game. And after the game is that is that a distraction for Ohio State. And what do you think that means for the team? I don't think it means much. He hasn't let it be a distraction. He talked about it yesterday. Its final press conference. He says I'll talk about my legacy after the game's over. They have a real smooth transition the kids like the offense coordinator Ryan day, who's was already an interim head coach for three games this year. So he has a track record. And I think that there will have no problems playing hard today. It's not win one for Meyer. It's win win for Ohio State and same for Washington. Yeah. I know you've covered some rose bowls before you've covered just about you. You're like the longest running sports guy town not to age ability Swart's. But there's something special about being down there at the Rose Bowl. Isn't there? Oh, it's no question came in on the media bus this morning and you cross under orange grove boulevard and then Colorado boulevard where they have the tournament roses parade you see tournament house and that that great hotel. They have their it used to be the media headquarters, and then all of a sudden, you see the iconic sign, and you get skills about seeing that stadium again, ROY a Saco and all of the players have been in this game that coaches, they get that same kind of chill up and down their spine when they see the granddaddy of them all it's gonna be fun. I got about ten seconds. Give me a prediction here. I know you did hit me with a tweet. I'm gonna let you read it. What did you say? I'm going to stand by it. I think the kicking game is going to be magnified with the win. Somebody makes a special teams mistake or big play. And I'm gonna take Washington and a fairly high scoring Rose Bowl thirty one to twenty seven. It's going to be a good one. All right. Bill Swartz.
