Golf's Biggest Winners of 2020
"All right. Sean it has been quite the year. it's not over. I'm not saying it's over. But i am saying we're here to get ahead of all those year end lists of winners losers best of we're tackling it midway through november where we winners this year. Did we win. I'm not confident that we were. There was a moment in the middle of september where you hung out with bryson into shambo after. He warned the. Us open lumberton potato. The me i'm gonna finish that offers a little bit pizza or game. We proceeded to miss a flight about six hours later. Yup and yet we were somehow still able to make it. Torrey pines south and talk to a bunch of the best golfers in the world in the next twenty four hours. Is the drop zone peaked. In twenty twenty. I think we had to peak. Then you the major winner. We go to play the next. Us open course at sunset. We have a great little afternoon at torrey pines. And then we hang out with zander and burger and morikawa and just korda the next day. And so yeah. That's where that's where we won. That's a really strong point. We didn't we didn't get to perform on the course as much as we like to in a typical year. But hey we're we're not really here to bring our golfed the people it's not about us you know who it's about it's about patrick. Reed patch agreed is by far one of the biggest winners of twenty twenty. All right start off years number one winner. Patrick reed defend yourself is one of the biggest losers of twenty nineteen. You'll remember that. He got stuck in some bunker fiasco in december of two thousand nineteen and we thought that it was gonna follow him alone for the entire year is is is swinging. You thought that people are gonna continue yelling at him while he was playing like. They did during his playoff in hawaii. David ferte call him. Captain oblivious which i thought was a great little nickname. Peter costas was telling people. I've seen patrick reed improve his lie in the rough numerous times and yet here we are twenty twenty. And we don't even do anything about this. We joke about it. We don't care about it. Patrick reed one in mexico. He contended i think you can say he contended at the. Us open he missed one cut after the restart. He's a winner this year. Because we don't care about what happened in past. This is where the phrase bigger fish to fry comes in our biggest problems. Man what a great time to be alive. Last december where our biggest worry was patrick. Reed kind of messing around in a waste. Bunker in the bahamas life was pretty good So yeah i mean. I think that that's a pretty fair one because look we just. Don't even talk that much about patrick reed right now. He's sneaky number eleven in the world. He's gonna be back on the us ryder cup team. If he if he keeps up you know his current run and play. He's been damn good.

Keisha Holmes - The Woman Behind Curvy
"Welcome Kishan to the show. Hi Hi hey it's been so long how are you? I'm good. How are you thank you for talking to me? I know you've had a busy day to day already Then a really busy day We're really really excited about you. Know People You know the excitement about being able to to to be safe and we were happy to heed the call of the mayor here in Los Angeles to Get the fashion industry. You know to us all together and You know to start making mask which we were doing ahead of time but you know it's nice that when they you know they heeded the call. We were like we're right here prepared so we turned our warehouse from making apparel into medical masks. And we're working on hospital gallons as well. Oh yeah yeah so. We're getting that up and running but it's coming okay. Now let's start talking about a little bit about you first so you started your career and bashing twenty eight years ago. Tell us how you got started in fashion. Well I mean when I say that out loud. I'm like wow how old am I? It flew by. You know I had a you know just I had come home from summer camp. I was working at a summer camp and I was like you know eighteen years old and I was looking for a job. My neighbor was the manager of the Frederick's of Hollywood store in In one of our local malls here the pointy hills mall and she says hey. I'm looking for some holiday. Help you know if you need a part time job until you kind of figure out what you WANNA do. I knew it was gonna be starting college soon. I was one of those kids who knew I wanted to go to school and go to college but I had not settled on a career. I thought I was going to go into social work. Or you know something you know. Admirable like that and Once I started working in the retail store I kind of found my calling like I fell in love with fashion and I you know looked up to see like how is this a career. What do I do? And I enrolled in the fashion program and Mount Sack Mount San Antonio College here and I worked and went to school. Got My college degree and kind of worked my way through the company into the buying office and I mean you know it's all uphill from there so it's it's been a nice little journey from laundry to you know it's a clothings kids close to and then I started When I was at Frederick's a really make sure that that plus size customer was spoken to so making sure that I worked directly with the buzz when I was on the sales floor of having enough plus size merchandise on the floor and then when I went into the buying office like plus I just became like you know my baby of making sure we had all the right size bras and underwear and every single item that you know we were purchasing came in plus sizes so we had a wonderful collection of plus size lingerie In in the on the floor because you know women of all sizes WanNa feel sexy and It was it was a nice journey into into you know making sure that all women were color covered and felt beautiful. Also now when I first met you you were working at Torrey in the corporate office tour and then from from torrid you went on to forever twenty one but I did not know you helped launch the plus size division F- forever twenty one. Tell me about that experience yet. That was a fun little You ever like gone to work one day and you did one job and then the very next day you were doing something else. So that's kind of how that started. I went to forever twenty one. I went to work with My friend Hannah who I worked with that. Frederick's she was there and we were on the ECOMMERCE TEAM. We were on the very beginning side of When they were launching the website so we were the ECOMMERCE buyers sort of liaison between e commerce and the rest of the buying team. And you know we scheduled all the photo shoots and made sure all the product was there and you know we did special buys for just the website and then one day Mrs. Shang came to the two of us and she said whatever you're doing right now. You're not going to do that job anymore. She says we're finally ready. We have been talking about it for a while but she keeps saying we're not ready or not ready. Finally one day she said. I think we're ready. You guys are going to plus sizes and that's it so that very day ECOMMERCE was not her thing anymore. We called every vendor that we knew we talked to the design team we worked with the other buyers and we started pulling you know pulling samples and pulling a collection together and We launched maybe a couple of months later at the most. And that was that was definitely journey of starting from scratch out of nowhere to pull this customer together and to To launch a plus size division within forever twenty one who had been around since nineteen eighty four and was just now at that point to be ready for plus as in two thousand nine now. How did you transition from forever? Twenty one to Kirby Center so I mean as you everybody kind of knows forever was going through a transition and I was on the beginning In the beginning wave of a layoff and so once I was laid off. You know I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do next. I knew I didn't want to just head straight back into another buying office for retailers. I wanted to you know. Use My skills to try to you. Know find something special and you know what they say. Be careful what you pray for so you know those doors kind of kicked what wide open and I was approached by a former sales. Rep that That I worked with that. I work for this company and said that they were looking for somebody to launch an e commerce. Plus I've website and they sought me out and so I came in and spoke to the owner of the company who I used to purchase. Um from what I was the buyer and they have everything ready right here and I was going to spearhead this this new launch of this new website right here and it was great. We have an in house designer. Her name is Michelle and she's fantastic. And we have sewers and cutters and to be able to watch something ourselves right here and kind of oversee merchandising from from the very beginning from fabric ordering cutting patterns to have it launched. We shoot here. Everything is done right here in our in our building here in the city of commerce. So it's been a great transition because I felt like I was really being able to. Finally you know kind of spearhead kind of my own thing and all sense of what it was from our experience of what you and I know that you know back when I first met you. You know you knew sort of sort of our struggles at forever as you know really trying to identify that customer trying to get people are sort of on board with what we know plus women to be but of course. There's girl my whole life so to try to get people to understand like who she is. She goes everywhere. She has multiple occasions. She's you know she's she's the same as a smaller girl. Just as fancy just as fantastic and you know. She embraces her body. We're not scared of our bodies and if we are we kind of learn to you know to embrace who we have. It's kind of hard to teach people that stuff when it's already being read in you so to be able to. You know kind of start. That sort of you know How would I say like the attitude of who this girl is and not have to convince somebody like was great from Day One? We knew who she was she was going to be. You know just as fantastic woman who has a million places to go and it's been a great journey.

"We're not gonNA talk to you on this do Xyz and they didn't actually work. During the Obama Years We saw greater and greater moves towards quote unquote illiberal democracy in these countries. And I think this administration came in with idea okay. Well that didn't work okay. I'm not saying was that rational necessarily but that didn't work so kilmeade continued to engage. Because if we don't you know the fear is that these countries will drift further and further away and we can only have influence if we engage all right. So with that as premise. What is the democracy playbook for International Actors So we hear also looked at a distinct set of international actors the United States being one of them and I think Alina makes a very good point that the United States is not just a unified actor that is represented by the president and an administration. This also involves the US. Congress which I think in recent years has been more vocal on looking at democratic backsliding in central Europe and in Turkey holding hearings on these types of issues is an important way to draw attention to them meet other. Us actors such is a US foundations. Ngos have been good at calling out illiberal tactics. When they're seeing calling out you know infringements on the rule of law and independent judiciaries and so at least on the US front. We put forward a range of strategies and tactics at look not just at rhetoric from the administration but also on the congressional and private-sector. Ngo Foundation level for helping to bolster the actions of the domestic actors on the ground as Alina mentioned a lot of the countries that we focus on are also Members of the European Union. We also focus on how the European Union can pursue and strengthen institutional channels for pushing back undemocratic A retrenchment within their own ranks This is a tricky issue. Because when European Union was expanding in the nineteen ninety s and the early two thousands. There were tools that the European Union had at their disposal to help straight in free institutions within states that wanted to become members of the European Union steps that ascension states had to take on strengthening the rule of law strengthening accountable institutions ensuring. That there is a viable political opposition and then once a member of the European Union this type of leverage kind of disappeared and so we looked at other types of tools that the EU could pursue and just mentioned one for now but the EU has structural funds and disposal that countries such as Poland and Hungary are recipients of and not just pulling agree but other member states and we think you should be adopting some sort of rule of law conditionality that insurers how these states are able to receive structural funds again not just for newer states in central and eastern Europe. But also for long tenured member states and Western Europe. There should be a sort of rule of law index whereby states that score higher on the index greater access to funds and that is something that the U I don't think uses enough at its disposal right now. So that is the second actor. European Union institutional channels the third actor which is not necessarily on the front lines of pushing back democratic retrenchment. But it's important unless is NATO in NATO is first and foremost military organization but it is also an organization that has within its founding charter a commitment to strengthening institutions across its member states and within NATO most importantly Poland Hungary and Turkey. First and foremost we've seen a backsliding of democratic institutions that is actually hurting the alliance's core mission of cohesion and trust and interoperability. To address shared security challenges. And so this is a platform where we outline a few ideas on how NATO can actually try to make it and help its member. States uphold the institutions. That are a part of its charter. And a part of being part of this military organization. I think to put it simply. You need carrots and sticks right. You can't just have all sticks all carrots and what that means in reality. Is that disagree? Quick more current example countries like Poland especially are incredibly key allies for the United States when it comes to determining Russia for example And Poland has been. I think a an incredibly vocal partner when it comes to shifting the conversation within the EU which As we've seen in some recent moves especially from France Some countries there are sort of wobbly on the Russia. Question and Poland does not And so as a security partner their key for the United States as well if one of our missions as ministration has put around US national security strategy is to out compete Russia in this Arab geopolitical competition. And so we have to remember that there are a lot of commonalities and shared goals. That we still have with these countries. Another example of that is an hallway. Obviously the United States is really keen to get a European allies to not allow hallway into the into the Five G. infrastructure. We have the UK now publicly saying that they will work with hallway. Poland on the other hand Has recently said that they will have very strict restrictions and Romania has done the same and still has Estonia so I think there again is just a much more complex said relationships that we have with these places and so we need to continue to engage in these core areas of national security. But it doesn't mean that we. We shouldn't absolutely should continue to point out when we see problems in rule of law and corruption and other issues related to democratic decline. So we need to wrap up. We've gotten pretty nitty gritty in a bunch of areas. But I want to zoom out at the end of the day. Alina is the democracy playbook out playing the illiberal tool kit or you know how deep is is the crisis of European democracy right. Now let me answer that sorta through the back door a little bit. I think the big question to my mind that I don't think we ever really got to the bottom of both of these. Reports is whether we're really in a crisis of democracy of whether we're in a crisis liberalism and we often put these things together and we kinda just say liberal. Democracy is the style of governance that allows the most freedom for citizens individuals. But I think what we're seeing in reality the source splintering of these two concepts where you can have democratically elected leaders. Who are not necessarily going to promote gordon quote liberal values with a small l and that applies to economic policy applies to cultural policy and applies to political tactics. As well and I think to my mind we have to understand what we're trying to fight here in. Our decision was to really focus and democratic institutions. Yeah those checks and Balances Judicial Independence Free Media Free Fair election system. Opposition political movements and parties are in place. Because those are things that we can actually kinda see and measure but I think the big question to me is you know what is the e U as the traffic alliance if those liberal ideas are starting to fray away from consensus and certainly. I think it is true that we do not have consensus on whether this isn't a lines base to liberal democratic ideas. I think we still have consensus that some lines based in democratic values but I think that is still the big question to my mind. Tori final thoughts. When the democracy playbook confronts the illiberal toolkit who prevails we talked about a lot of worrying and negative trends on the podcast today but I would like to end on an optimistic note because I do think despite the backsliding that we're seeing in Europe and the even the troubling trends that we're seeing in the United States there is hope to be had because something that I think we miss. These conversations is that democracy is not some sort of end state to be achieved. I think this is what we missed. In the heyday of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union democracy looked like an end state and something that we would kind of March inevitably towards in this LINEAR LINE. And it's not true democratic momentum across centuries waxes and wanes and it's a process. It's a process that has to be constantly reinvigorated and revitalized. And I think you know. Pro Democracy actors. Small Democracy actors had taken their eye off the ball Institutions feel out of touch from people who elect officials to serve them. Trust is declining. But these are solvable problems and I think that kind of torture that spirit of nineteen eighty nine just needs to be passed down to the next generation to be picked up Younger people today are participating in political systems in different ways they're looking for new platforms and new ideas and we're at a transition but it's certainly not preordained to be a negative slide toward liberalism or authoritarianism but we need to. We need to put our back onto ball. The report is the democracy playbook preventing and reversing democratic backsliding. It is by norm. Eisen Andrew CA neely Susan Kirk and our guests today Tori Taussig Andolina Polyakova. Thank you both so much for joining us. "ZIPRECRUITER DOT COM SLASH SB cab hit with Evan Kaplan are statistical colleague and friend around here at ESPN and we were just talking about how crazy it's been in the nfl you ever seen the stretch like this has been nutty right so it's been unbelievable. I mean starting since when the season opened with the the bears packers game and and over the last two weeks. It's it's been something new every day injuries to trades to everything. I it's run the Gamut Adam. It's it's kept yep things exciting in addition to all the Games on the field well you you said since the season started at the outset of this podcast. I talked about the fact that it goes back to the preseason with with everything that's happened with Antonio Brown Andrew Lock Judean Cloudy Laremy Tunsil Minkah Fitzpatrick all the quarterback injuries the quarterback benching I would venture to say that it has been about as busy opening month if we go back into the preseason that the NFL has ever had there it was the year in two thousand fourteen where the ray rice video surfaced that I think was enormously significant damaging imaging disconcerting and you had all the issues legal issues that came along with it with Adrian Peterson and Greg Hardy and many the other incidents that the league was dealing with but but this from a football standpoint trades hirings firings tyrants traits all that stuff. This has been different different. This has been crazy and it's almost like the NFL is taking a page from the NBA playbook. I would agree I. It's something new every day you you were talking about. Andrew Lock in some of the moves during you can go back to the draft and that's as we've seen this week that kind of set the stage for at least one of these big quarterback stories with what the giants did in that in the draft in April and let's go to that because on Tuesday morning the giants announced that they were benching ally manning two time superbowl champion for Dangle Jones and now Dangle Jones will be going up against Tampa Bay to make his first. Nfl Start what is your perspective on this type of Move Evan. Well look we were in Nashville together for the draft and it was a note that I'd come up with and you've seen a lot of places already this week there was there was just no chance that the giants giants were. GonNa sit Daniel Jones for the entire year based on what we've seen recently look. I'm not saying what the what Dave cattleman and the giants were going to do but on the recent history fourteen of the last fifteen quarterbacks picked in the top six overall started at least ten games as a rookie you can stop right there the only one who didn't was jared. Goff who still started seven games as a rookie so while I don't know if we thought it would be this soon Daniel Jones if he starts every game without injury that's fourteen eighteen for the rest of the season and when you look at ally and I know earlier you talked about the quarterback injuries. Eli Manning most starts in the NFL since he made his he's I start back in two thousand and four who else is in that top. Five drew brees Ben Rothlisberger those three one super bowls in consecutive three consecutive seasons tallaght that two thousand seven season Eli Manning and the giants two thousand eight season. Ben Roethlisberger and the steelers two thousand nine season drew brees and the saints. We won't see any give them start in week three amazing now what was that that fourteen fourteen of the last fifteen quarterbacks picked in the top six overall started at least ten in games in their rookie season go right there you go and and Jones looks like he will start at least ten as well but how about that two thousand seven eight nine the raising adding. Ben Breeze and none will start on Sunday. We haven't seen a week where those three quarterbacks have not been a part of the league. It's a changing the guard in many ways it really is it really is but with all that being said changing the guard who is still there with his team to know Tom. Brady of course here's the other quarterbacks getting her other quarterbacks get bench. He's he's forty two just keeps going on and now a home game against the jets where he has been almost under it's ridiculous his home record against the AFC east forty six and five including the playoffs five losses one of those losses. You didn't play the second half. It was a meaningless week seventeen meaningless for the patriots week seventeen seventeen game against the bills so his last loss at home against the division when he played the entire game the two thousand ten divisional playoffs with with our friend Rex Ryan and the jets when they beat them in Foxborough. Tom Brady has divisional playoff home game in nine years. You don't even need playoff he has not lost a game against NFC east when he played the entire game a little bit of a caveat AFC EAST AFC's AFC sorry he is not lost game against the AFC's when he when he was when they were the plane the whole game and it meant something since the two thousand ten plates we have to add a little caveat because of the two thousand seventeen two thousand fourteen situation when he only played the first half but still I mean jets coming up there this week. I think we would all be shocked considering the jets quarterback situation if the Patriots don't move to three and now we do have an unbelievable able quarterback match up this week and what is the best game of the week in my mind Baltimore Ravens at the Kansas City Chiefs Lamar Jackson Verse Patrick Mahomes. I think the two you best stories the NFL season so far. What are we make that match up their numbers are almost identical through two weeks this season and you'll get them sit both have seven touchdown passes tied for the most in the NFL and zero interceptions this is according to allies of the first season in NFL history where two quarterbacks had seven touchdowns and no interceptions in their team's first two games of the year so you look at the historic start for both of them and they played a great game last year Adam as we've talked about in Kansas City. The Lamar Jackson played very well had the ravens on the cusp of a win Arrowhead Stadium Mahomes leading them back on a late game tying drive. They won an overtime the chiefs chiefs but certainly looking forward to this one early on Sunday and we also have a match up of sack leaders Aaron Donald the rams going up against myles Garrett and the browns announce. What do we make of that match. Evan Yeah on on Monday night football after the game with Suzy Kolber and and Louis Riddick Steve Young we had myles Garrett on the field they were asking him about out being developed in the player of the year. That's been Aaron Donald's territory the last few years myles Garrett has is second in sacks over the last two seasons behind Donald and there will be on the same field this Sunday night in Cleveland. You look at the one and two players in sacks. It will be very interesting to see Garrett. Already has five sacks ax in two games this season. He's not Aaron Donald but he's off to start and they're going to need that pass rush against the high powered rams offense in Cleveland Sunday night. Hey Evan. Thanks for the great information about week three. We'll look forward to talking to you before week. Four and enjoy the games this week thanks a lot out of you and a special social thanks to my colleague at Espn Evan Kaplan for that tremendous insight into the week three matchup some incredible numbers there that he came up with and gives you an idea of we're going to see this upcoming weekend. "Man Coming off a career high hundred twenty one yard receiving performance last Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers Getting Ready See for Sunday's big game against the New York giants. We Bring Indie. Tampa Bay buccaneers wide receiver Chris and Chris. Thanks for taking the time today. Yeah no the problem. Thank you for having me on Chris. What is clicked for you in this your third. NFL season honestly I. It's Kinda tough to say but I think the biggest thing would. Let's be a I'm going to get more comfortable more comfortable playing at this level more comfortable with what I'm seeing from defense and taking a coachman that I'm getting in and kind of translating it to the Game Phil. What does it take to get more comfortable like that. I really just takes a lot of reps. there's a lot of repetition practice both in the offseason program man in training camp and then you know throughout the week of practice just just really all those all those repetitions all the film all the time. She's been watching film and Kinda. Just he's just put together. I know it's two weeks look. It's a long season. You've got fourteen more regular season games. But what were you expecting coming into this year. Were you expecting to have the kind of production that you've had the first two weeks of the season Chris. Honestly I every time I go out there you know I I have high expectations for myself. I I think everybody should you know because if you're not going out there expecting the best things from yourself. I think you're in the wrong business. you know so as we go out there and and I approach every day with the with the intent to get you know get better to get a little bit better so that my game time comes you know where I stand. I feel comfortable with with my preparation. What kind of chemistry I review built up with your other opposite wide receiver Mike Evans as the buccaneers top two receivers. It isn't really good I. I think think we both do a lot of a lot of chemistry together. I think the biggest thing is you know since I've gotten here is such a great you know influence on me such a role model you you know someone. I can look up to see everybody the success that he's had but he's a great dude on and off the field. You know any question that I've ever had he's been right there. It kinda helped guide me you know showing MIDORI. What's thing you've learned from him? Chris just really just just so you know that that competitive edge and then using your size. I'm obviously makes a really big Guy Diane. You know I think I'm I'm not as big as my but I like to think of myself as a physical guy so just kind of like using this is to our advantage. He's not upset with you for taking targets and touchdowns sounds the first two weeks of the season no man Mike he's he's a self do manno winning and you did get the win last week against Carolina. What about working with James in the final season of his contract. What have you seen from him in terms of growth. I've seen a ton of stuff man. I mean the first first thing that jumps off the edge off at you about James his you know his charisma. You know obviously he's A. He's a natural born leader. He's on God there and he's going to give you all you know no you. That's one thing you know about. Him is when loser draw you know that you're going to get James his all of his heart you know and I think that one thing done really good this year. It's Kinda just like leading us. You know just to stay in the moment not worrying about the previous plane. I worry about the next player but the player that we're all right now Chris. The buccaneers haven't made the playoffs since two thousand seven. Were you aware that yeah I think I I think I've heard it in passing. What would it mean to you to get back to the postseason. Reach the postseason for the first time in your career. I'm I saw. I think it'd be awesome. You know obviously real. We all played his game to win and if if we're going to retry it to my goal you know win the Super Bowl. We have to you know reach the playoffs I I I think that'd be a big step for this franchising and for us at the team before you became the eighty fourth overall pick in the third round of the two thousand seventeen. NFL Draft Graf Chris you were at Penn State where you had one hundred and fifty three catches for twenty four hundred yards and eighteen touchdowns. You also played there with Saquon Barkley who the buccaneers face on Sunday. What what did you learn from Saquon. What did you see about his game. That told you that he would be the kind of store that he is. At this level. I mean honestly like everybody else sees the his physical gifts. You know he's very athletic. you know there. There's there's not much much that he can't do on the football field but I think the the thing that we really notice that pens they was you know his competitive edge and his work ethic was second to none. You know he's going to go out there. He wants to would be the best you know. Eat Me wants to be the best thing or whether he's playing connect four hours on the football field and gifts that he has and that and that mentality you knew that there was some special yeah. What do you remember most about playing with him. Is there one memory one story one incident that you could say this symbolizes kind of guy and player that saquon Barkley is I don't know if it was you know. Nestle like one one instance that you know that I really remember. I think I feel like the first time that we recognize that he was going to be some special. Was I think his freshman year. We're playing buffalo and that was the first time he had jumped over. Somebody really man kids got it and then you know and then you see leadership stuff off the field and you're like he he really has. It's all the tools Chris. Are you telling me that you've never jumped over somebody during game man. I don't know if I would dare to do that. That's pretty bold and they had ah could you do it. If you needed to Chris oh I think I could. I believe I believe him. I see I wanNA see on Sunday. When you play the I want to see jump over somebody. There and I want you to think cast when you do jump over somebody gosh if we could get that done many requests on podcasts for guys but then unless that I'm putting out there for you to jump over somebody volt over somebody on Sunday. Definitely keep that in mind now. I don't know if you've heard the news about the other vaulting that's gone on in New York but Dangle Jones's voltage over Eli manning on the giants quarterback depth chart. What is it like when word of that change hits your building and a week where so you're preparing to face the giants. Did you hear that news today. this is the first. I'm hearing about it but I mean if I know our defense. you know like the way day that they approach the game. I I think I I don't know if it necessarily changed as much. I think either way like those those are two very capable quarterback that you have to you know that you have to be prepared or four so I doubt they're going to change that preparation. I think they're gonNA have that same attack. Mentality regardless whose back there didn't know the news that Daniels are still no. This is the first I'm hearing about it. Well okay well. When we get off this podcast you can go till the defense and you bring up your defense and your team's defense. Last last year was not very good but this year it's been very good you practice against him. Every day. What to you is the biggest difference in the defense from last year this year. I think I think their their mentality you know is is is awesome this year. I think like I said they have that attack. Mentality and you can tell they're all say faith. You know I think it goes done a really good job both of getting these guys unified on the same page and understanding what we're trying to attack offenses on the and all the guys really bought in you know I think I think that's a testament to like. I said to goals but also you know to the guys on defense. GonNa keeping everybody together important roof in the same direction Chris. There are like I said Fourteen Games left to your torch starts so far. What do you have in mind for the remainder of the season for what you can do. I feel like I have so much room to grow I've recognized. I've I've done some good things so far but I feel like I'm like I'm only scratching the surface and I'm excited about about the potential for growth but I also understand that you know that's not gonna come without hard work. You know so. I'm a pure pushing this same well. I've always happened. Just take one day at a time. Just try to keep improving to learn the stakes so that when I got the game China you know trying to have a lot of fun and try to you know play play worry free well Chris. I appreciate taking the time today good luck against the the giants on Sunday good luck for the remainder of the season and good luck vaulting over some giants helpless giants defensive back on Sunday. I appreciate your meal. There's the buccaneers doc in years wide receiver Chris Cottam before we get to. ESPN stats even Evan Kaplan..

"So there's no way you come back that can play football correct absolutely not this is a retirement retirement. I'm not on the fence I wanted to I could have played but I think I think the timing was right you know it's kind of like the perfect storm and so painful for the NFL I'm thinking of all relationships all the coaches that I've been able to play with I mean I'll play with some. I played on some amazing change with some great men and think about the coaches the great man the coaches that I've been around Ron Rivera is one of the the best man that I've known I think about John Harbaugh. You know he's awesome. he's always been the same. He's always construction long as I've known them doing absolutely and I think about my receiver coach Adam Henry out in in Cleveland browns Cleveland Right now with Jarvis where he coached in college. I think about Jim Hospital who I was with and Baltimore and also at the end and Carolina I mean that man helped groom only as a player in so many different ways and Bobby Ingram you know talk with him about being a player in life or whatever like these are like these all these men played a part in helping to shape. I am so I'm so grateful for the NFL experienced the leadership there and opportunity to you know impact others around around you you know if you play it years and you win the two super bowls and you play with all these great men like that. Is there a moment to you that stands out about your the. NFL career is winning. The Super Bowl is landing contract. Is it doing something in your community Tori. I think is everything I think about. I can think about some specialty from everywhere. I've been like in Baltimore like everyone knows Baltimore's like home for me like family the city and organization so so I just remember the night my brother has had and the team helping me get through all of that the fans the the sport they had helped me get through all of that and winning the superbowl that same year three months later there's nothing that can replace that time period and that meaning not only to myself but to my family. I think about going to San Francisco and we struggled it was tough. It was a very tough two years for me personally Dan and plan out there it was it was tough but I think about you know. The I like Jed York you know I love J. J. Yore duck and I think think about you know being a part where you know you almost watch them learning and grow as a as a as a young owner in this league and I. I think he's going to do great things. They're not just being in a different completely different parts of the country that I never would have been in and seeing the history forty niners the legends that come through there Jerry Rice Joe Montana just saying how much they mean to the people what they were able to accomplish and you think about Philadelphia I mean the most passionate fans in all of sports you think about playing with a young playmaker and Carson Carson Wentz you think about Nick Foles Philly special thing about the slave and it was right on my wife's on town and there's nothing that Kosta in the luckiest play ever been a part of with the knee bouncing near with the ball bouncing of me neal's knee I mean that was the craziest thing I've seen and been a part of the fans there during that parade yeah man. I mean man I it's it's I still get goosebumps thinking about it. What's so filling your wife's hometown phillies your wife's hometown yes. He's a multi season dogging twenty minutes outside the city and was she a big eagles fan in growing up or she didn't care yeah. Her folks were hurtful so they muscles so so her their daughter marries a great guy and helps helps them win. The super bowl their first one man trying to nuts. I'm I guess I keep telling people like to differ ever phase of my life yeah but that's one man the more I started thinking about the board. It's just I just told you about how my brother had passed. WanNa Pitbull for that like that has a lot like as tough to replace back but I just remember being young. I'm twenty two twenty three zero. When we want it back then and all of my family celebrate mothers siblings my mom you know and we were just celebrate on the field and then I think you fast forward to Philadelphia and Dan. I'm on the field and now I had two kids of my own and we're celebrating the field. They're throwing the confetti up and I mean it was just crazy. Look I just saw a picture from the other day. This is unbelievable. You know and I'm and I know some legends never had the opportunity to even playing the super bowl so to be a part of to to write organization to great cities and win man. I don't even I don't even know what I did to deserve all of that. You know the best part of these these jobs Tori whether it's playing football or covering football or being any part of football the best part of these jobs sometimes sharing the experiences with loved loved ones and that sounds like something you learned in the difference between winning Super Bowl forty seven with Baltimore in Super Bowl fifty to Philadelphia that when you share it with somebody somebody else it means that much more you know I agree man. It's like even to this day is gone back Philadelphia. What I'm going to get a cheese steak or whatever and people are still going crazy. You know daylight. This is why they waited so long and I happen to awesome all of that and I'm very thankful used to pay for the cheese steak in Philly occasionally but they take care of me. Okay Take Care of you. Did that's a good thing right movie but retired. I gotTa make sure I'm on the right right side of the fitness journey or going not staying I did now. What does it been like for you the first a couple of weeks of the season to watch the Games and see the game go on without you. you know whether it's actually been a greatest. Everyone's like man is going to be where I wouldn't practicing the game plan and I wouldn't expect them to be released so for me. It was like you know. We're watching the game lately seven days later that was practicing the thing but I didn't feel any type of way I felt like man like I was complete ten like and I was able to enjoy the game and my Sunday own enough that he knows what's going on now. He knows the players you know and I was I was able to talk to him about it and you know he's asking kids they had to you know so and so or all these things like. I just felt like I felt really good to just be dad and and flip through the channels and not having seven agenda or or want someone to win or someone that lose we just watching the game. I should ask you before. I let you go surprised at all. The Colin Kapernick hasn't gotten another chance surprise. No I'm not surprised because I think it's clear that people teams are bold enough to pick him up and at this point we know is not a talented she. They know his Morgenthau's. How's it does I think the the ownership put elitist. I mean I don't. I don't think they're willing to handle the media that come with is it and I think that's week in my opinion. I say this all the time we admitted as league who been arrested for selling and doing the drugs for beating women for the U is all kinds of different things and all he did was taken the need. It didn't hurt anyone. He didn't hurt himself. All he did was taking me so to me. That always stands out but I mean I would like you for someone to give him a shot. He hasn't even had a workout so I don't know man. I I very I don't not. I don't know hopefully what else he'll get out but it's the right thing to do. wants to plays and working out. He deserves the put but I remember along their bid their business differently in We'll see what happens online. What would it take for him to get a workout a workout because that's what I'm saying. They can't even workout that is that's the part that drives me crazy to mow. I live just tweeted about the he couldn't even get a workout like forgetting signing. There's quarterbacks literally dropping like flies. Yes and he can't even get a workout a proven guy. I mean it doesn't make any sense but that's all that's odd like the jets have Luke Falk on the roster trevor semi. Yeah and they can't bring in this a look at. I don't mean the jets particularly anybody that lose their quarterback right. That's because of not to them. It's not strictly a football issue the longer this has gone on. I think it's it's people don't WanNa deal with what they consider. A distraction even know I play with them. I played with air agreed in and Carolina like only a distraction initially with the media but it really doesn't bother anybody else. I tell people that are confused by distraction thing. I said he's doing before the game. I said if he was taking a knee uncover to these safety during the game then we'd have issue but he's not. He's doing it before the game. You know what's happening. He's a great team. He's a great leader in the community so what's going on and that's the same with cat cavs not bothering bothering any warning a protest the game yes if you ask him questions. You're gonNA tell you education but it doesn't bother anyone is not harming any he's the ease protesting peacefully and it does not hurt the team I I don't. I don't understand it but again you guys not for me. It doesn't make any sense you could wonder about that when you get into the media to that could be a point that you make their Tori. That'll be one of the first issues you could work on. When you come join this man I absolutely long before I even the clues speaking on his adding trying to for for years and they incision makers and people are more concerned about things that they feel like it's all about money and necessarily gaining money but losing money you ask me why can't a team like Jacksonville. Knicks out for a while. You have a cool looking quarterback. I like his attire but you have a guy like Cabernet. Maybe talking about it was about money you go to Jacksonville gets fill that thing up and he can win some game. You get somebody who's doing shot to get in the door and you never know what can happen but he can't even get a workout so horse and make the team a lot more relevant it than it has been onto another quarterback onto another quote. Your former teammate and Carolina Cam Newton been battling an ankle injury. Don't know whether he's GonNa play this week. Had off season. Shoulder surgery seems to be banged up. Could you see a scenario in which he would be like Andrew Luck and just walk from the game. No not at all can't can't can't and that's not saying Andrew. Luck isn't passionate because if if anybody understands Andrew Luck I do. I was at that point three months ago. Where my knee wasn't getting much. I didn't think I was going to be able to do it so I understand but can has workers tail off and he doesn't want for people doubting him that he can't do it and so I know that's competitive idea so I just don't that would never happen into never what are your expectations from what we will see from him the remainder of this season. I think I'm going to well. I think he's GonNa go out. I think he's GonNa play the way he he's expected to. I just hope and pray that he can get his Health Elsa because I know what type of player is and he's updating candidate warrior. I've known for years. We came in together but the last year so much that he doesn't like it and I hope that you know he gets his beckoning. Go out there and prove everybody wrong. There's a lot of people who wanted to and before I let you go Tori. You played the eight years in the NFL..

"Military would give joined interesting on my father actually served in the army in eighty second I know plenty of marines arena and a lot of folks in the navy so for me honestly I it became very clear that I was going to be able to create a lane so I never ever really process which branch I would actually try to get into but you ever stop to think how your life would have worked out. If you had gone into the military at all like how your life would be different. Today I think about my live in so many different ways I mean we don't have branded the military. I broke my leg. My junior high school and all these coaches were recruiting me before then I break my leg. The phone stops ringing and because they had questions would be fast or would I be able to run faster nothing so so from there. I learned like you have to have a backup plan like you know you can't worry about the scholarships and all these things that you can't even take care of yourself so for me. I don't like it then makes and you know I would have been comfortable with whatever but I know the journey wouldn't have been smooth and that's why I try to do as much as I can to help others because I do know that like Lily. One decision could derail their change everything so it's important to be a realist. I don't feel like I'm any better than anyone. Anyone could have been in anyone's shoes whether that's at the highest of the highs for them or the lowest of the low for them like that could be made so that's really one of the main another another main reason why. I tried to help much. Do you refer to helping others. How is it that you impart this wisdom that you've been fortunate enough to pick up through the years that you did. I mean I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you on the phone. If it wasn't for my coaches my mentor thinking about my guidance counselor Ms Williams Middle School who I still continue to stay in contact with like all those folks I believe in me and gave me hope and for me and the things we may not L. had at times but for me I meant the world I know. They didn't have to do it but they did and made a difference in my life. So I know the power. I've got the power of just a little bit of help the power just a little bit of support so I try to go out and do the same thing and and try to rally people because all the sometimes. It's hard for you to understand things when you haven't lived at don't when you don't have a lived experience but I do so I know there's a lot of potential and a Lotta people but sometimes they just need a little help. You know getting to the finish on. What's your message to these young kids of today? Tori so many different messages like it does ah we'd be going on forever but forever man you know one of the biggest thing for me is that and that was really Kinda. How is that you know in in sports until you download the control control but that's life as well. You know you can't control who your parents it's are. You can't control what decision they're making. You can't control where you you can't get your school district. You can't control a lot of things a kid. He's all things that other people have have have going for them to benefit you but you can control your attitude. You know your preparation. You're the way you behavior the way you act in school how your grade don school and those things abuse my tool of making it out and so. I try to tell them that because when you're frustrated because what's is going on at home whether there's drugs abused or whatever involved that you're wincing at home. These are all things that you really can't control but if you take it then you focus your time on things that you can't. You'll realize that you can shave a better future for yourself. If you sit there and you soak on all the band's you can't control with honestly actually it does consume you. Have you giving yourself the time to sit back and think about all you had to overcome to get to where you are today where where you play eight. NFL seasons where you're two time superbowl winner where you I would assume are set financially now and came along with the rest of your life in a more comfortable way than it was while you were growing up. Do you allow yourself a moment to take pride and everything that you've been able to overcome. I we have and especially recently you know why for me to be here and you know I've seen I wanNA see my mom. You know we've we've. We've been through a lot so see her and she she's doing well see she doesn't have to worry about certain things and to know that you know. I had to choice the play. Hey fine but I didn't have to because of financially. I'm okay you know I don't have to jeopardize my health. I'd be lying to you if you would've told me that. This was year three and I feel the same way I feel now. I will probably a lot harder to try to make sure that I can try. Try to accrue more income and it it hits you when you're like man like I have a choice and is because of the Games because of the time and you know I don't have to jeopardize my health and my future in other ways and I don't have to go into a situation. That's not you know meanings worry or it doesn't make Gabby. You know what I mean so I wanted to. I'd be likely I said I didn't WANNA. Play in you know walk off my last game. You know I wanted to do that but you know when things change you have to go look in the mirror and you had the luggage situation you know I have a son in kindergarten now. data Saturday nine month and another son that's three years old and so my wife has then you start thinking about things a little differently in me kind of had this issue from when I was growing up about stability that means the world like my son growing up in the same school district and and and not switching going to fifty thousand in schools or knowing exactly where he's coming home to every night that means the world to me so I want I want that form and he's in kindergarten now and you know the timing is kind of right to begin the school year while getting back going in Maryland their transition to the next life so you're in Maryland I will be. I mean Charlotte Right now. You're in Maryland. When I'm done going back to Maryland the Baltimore area ticket and that's real sale. Absolutely you know I'm Komo Virginia border from Virginia and to go to about some people I'm from Virginia but I became a man in Maryland. I went to college at University of Maryland and I was drafted by the Ravens played their those four years and you know that the eight years of my life you know admit the world to me all of my adult life. Is there there so that's home for me and I'm looking forward to getting bad and what is next for you in a life at Torrey Smith. What's the next chapter going to include the next step is going to include a lot of different things The first thing that I'm looking forward to is down with my family. I'm looking forward to creating great note a bigger impact in the community that I live in especially in Baltimore city looking forward to the opportunity to possibly be colleagues yoy always into in Iraq folks on the media side and and be able to talk about players the things that you know I looked up to going up in terms sounds very journey with ED overcome why do place things the way they think preparation the things that go into it that I think beneficial beyond XS and Os so so I'm looking for China. You know just again appreciate. Is there any person to live and try to help as many people as I can come into the media. Yeah might be a murderer i. I don't know if I get the sources like you have. I don't know if I went to sources but I think you know I I like one thing about. I've enjoyed about the media. You know there's always love as relationship as a player but the one thing I've always enjoyed about the median are respected is that you have the ability to portrayed away a person right meaning like I the way I can talk about out in a way that will make you feel like yeah the greatest guy I've been talking about your during the other thing that make you go and thousands and millions of people can see that and the most important thing about it and after they saw it but then there's people that are just like you and so when I see guys that NFL unlock room you hear their stories and you like people don't notice like takes guy like like Cam Newton for example guy that he gets picked on a lot you know from his the way. He dresses to you know how he wasn't he was younger media whatnot but then I think about the Cam Newton and when we went to go take our kids to get ice cream that that yeah him and his kids me and my kids you have them. It's all gang I have my own game and I see the way you interact with his kids the way they admire him the way he loves them. I think those are things that people people can relate to and I think it's important to talk about players and share their stories in a way that makes them more relatable there for a kid that maybe in certain situations. Could you have something that he truly should be looking to well. That's one of the great things that's why I love doing. This podcast is to get a Torrey Smith on and to hear him talk about himself and to hear the kind of life that he has had and what he's overcome to get to worry is which I ordinarily don't get to do on a day-to-day basis. My job is more transactional actional. WHO's getting hired. WHO's getting fired. WHO's getting a contract extension. WHO's getting caught. WHO's getting traded right like that's my job but this chance to sit. Sit Down and talk to you about the kind of guy that you are and you bring up the idea of wanting to portray people how they should be portrait. How should people know Torrey Smith. She portrayed I think about me to get you know I've been able to I take you know. Take the highs and those that is a brayer an off the field you know but for me. I think the one that's about me for anyone. That's me or anyone familiar with me in the media. My family's is community and family and it goes together because like you. I realize how important that is one. It's true to me everything that I the way I the way my family is. I prayed and envisioned that long before it became a reality and so not as they're like my wife had just committed as I am so I realize and recognize the responsibilities that we have to do more to be more so so mainly when AS Roma they see that is authentic is not say in this is not an it's partially that way because it was real it was my journey but it means a lot to me to know that you know I wouldn't have been where I was without coupling me and so i WanNa make sure that I'm doing my part to help others..

"It can't believe I'm going to say this. Your genius well well. You welcome I kind of am. We're on the ten minutes. Maybe we should get that. Kleenex out of your nose this weeks out of shifter podcast. It's week three of the NFL season. We're going to talk to former. NFL Wide Receiver Torrey Smith who just announced his retirement from the NFL and we'll be joined by the Tampa Bay buccaneers wide receiver Cris Godwin whose off to a toward start two weeks into the year end will get a breakdown of week three from the ESPN statistics and Analytics Guru Evan Kaplan but I a word about the week that was and what's going on in the league the last few days it started week two when we saw to marquis franchises this is the steelers and the saints lose to Future Hall of fame quarterbacks and Ben Rothlisberger and drew brees changed the fortunes thousands of the season for both teams in the case of Pittsburgh with Ben Rothlisberger gone for the year it makes you think that Baltimore becomes the heavy favorite to win the AFC north and we'll have to fend off a challenge from the Cleveland browns though it a bit to Mason Rudolph the man who takes over for Ben Rothlisberger her to keep Pittsburgh's hopes alive and of course Pittsburgh must have strong hopes because it already traded its first round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Minka Fitzpatrick. A quarterback drew an awful lot of interest around league but Pittsburgh feels like with its defense improving Minka Fitz Patrick will upgrade that defense and make it better and Pittsburgh's got the one with some defense now not Ben Rothlisberger offense and think about this a year two years years ago the steelers were led by Ben Rothlisberger Antonio Brown living on Bell. None of them will play for Pittsburgh the remainder under of this season as for the New Orleans Saints drew brees think about US close the saints wore to making it to the Super Bowl last year one call that everybody everybody knows about from the NFC championship game that went against the saints and for the Rams cost them an appearance in the Super Bowl where they would have had a chance to beat the New England patriots and the fact that drew brees then goes out and hurts his thumb in week to the next year shows you just how tough this year to year to repeat and to count on being back to that big. Nobody goes back every year. Unless you're the New England patriots they are immune to all rules but the saints were on the doorstep doorstep of greatness in each of the past two postseasons only to see the Minnesota miracle and then the call that changed the way that the league views those types of plays with new rules saints drew brees now after turn Teddy Bridgewater who's a steadying force but I think ASEM hill still brings the most upside and I still think we'll see tastes him hill at quarterback at some point for the New Orleans Saints and then some of the doors quarterbacks and news we mentioned Minkah Fitzpatrick being traded to Pittsburgh Berg Miami Gutting. It's team stockpiling draft picks five number one picks and second round picks in the next two years loaded with picks but devoid of some key players like Laremy Tunsil on so and make a fitzpatrick as four Jalen Ramsey requested his trade spoken. Clearly Jacksonville wants to move on from him and he wants to move on from Jacksonville but Jacksonville not gonNA move on from Jalen Ramsey until it gets a package that it wants that it's comfortable with and it thinks fair and we we know that it's way more than a first round pick which is basically the price that the steelers paid for Minkah Fitzpatrick. We'll see what Jacksonville could get back for Jalen Ramsey but the trade deadline's October twenty ninth and it's just a matter of time before Jalen Ramsey is dealt and then the news of course on Tuesday morning the New York giants benching Eli he Li- manning a two time superbowl champion two time superbowl MVP to go to Dangle Jones the rookie first round draft pick and everybody knew that at some point this season. Dangle Jones was going to get the opportunity to start but nobody thought it would be Tuesday September seventeenth which was a much quicker timeline than anyone would have thought that the giants felt like a team that was missing wide receivers struggling on defense needed a a injection of energy feel like Daniel Jones brings certain elements that ally manning doesn't and so alive manning now goes to the bench and the the madness of the NFL continues and you look at the last month all the news that has happened Andrew Luck retiring Antonio Brown with everything anything that's gone on with him from Oakland to New England to the accusations of three different sexual assaults to the player trades trades that we've seen a devon clouded to Seattle Laremy Tunsil to Houston Minka Fitzpatrick to the Pittsburgh steelers to the injuries of quarterback quarterbacks to the benching of quarterbacks. It has been about as busy period is the NFL could ever expect over the course of one month very rarely is the NFL that busy. We're busy today with this. PODCAST and first up is the great man and former. NFL Wide Receiver Torrey Smith are joining us now is a man who played eight NFL seasons for the Ravens to with the forty niners one with the panthers at the Eagles and posted his retirement video video on uninterrupted last Friday Torrey Smith Tori. Thanks for taking the time really appreciate it and I'd like to know what went into the decision vision to walk away from the game of football at the age of thirty for me. It was a combination of things you know number one being the situation relation I told my wife before the year that it was going to be my last year anyway. is surgery. I have the plan the Eagles in October Cobra last season and I had surgery and everything well I was fine. at least we thought and then when we stopped in the off season my. La Basically shut down and like we stood on why but it wasn't right I wasn't able to dog I wasn't able to for sure wasn't able to sprint jump anything and so work my tail off and I was able to make it back for camp in healthy enough to play and I know I like I said I work myself back in but during the offseason I learned that you know like it was kind of an eye opener to me when I'm supposed to be healthy be but like I couldn't go play. My Kids and you know my son's five. We want to go outside and play and I couldn't do it. get my daughter out of credit my Naser her and then it Kinda like a little flash of light. You know you have some knee issues down the line and I kinda started thinking a little bit beyond the game like is it worth it is not and so I was willing to you know take a role in Carolina to finish up here and play here. I wanted to say I did and then yeah when I was released. it just didn't make as much sense to to move into a new place. How concerned are you about the long term effects of what you put your body through not just the NFL seasons but the time you played in college and the time he played in high school and how that will impact your future life. I think something has to be concerned about when you watch the dog guys who play before the older guys and you know some people struggle. Hello and some people are doing perfectly fine so. I don't try to love everything in in one basket but you know I've been. I've been running media. You know planning for a while so I understand that you know things can happen to your body. down the line because of the things you do when you were younger and that's is if you're an athlete or not so. I don't really kind of put that on the box you know having a trauma to my to my knee. I do know that you know there's GonNa me some issues there down the line but I'm happy that I'm you know I'm in okay. Oh now and I don't see anything in the near future. That should probably stop me from at leaves me comfortable you mentioned some people struggle and some people are fine post football ever stop to think why that is because it's amazing to think some people have gotten beaten up during their careers and I see them functioning at a high level and others are limping along and struggling physically post football and I just think it's simply everyone's bodies different everyone's by having everyone gets all caught up in c. t. and always other things but like the guys who had plenty of concussions whenever plan and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them as aging adults so the body is different and I think we we all need to realize that and one person's situation you use for current players right one person might tweak a hamstring and he's offer sake seven weeks and people are like what's wrong with this do like you know coaches players and everyone was what's wrong with them but everyone's body is different and that's probably one of the biggest things. I learned from. This game is that everyone's bodies different. Everyone hills different. Everyone handles conditioning different. Everyone's wins different so you just for me. It's better to be informed and to know what's out there. So therefore I know that look for the signs I know how to be more for you know preventive of being out in front of things and that just makes more sense to me in the video that you posted you thanked the game of football ball for showing you how to be a man. How did football show you how to be a mandatory. Yeah you'd think about I think about all of the the discipline hardware sacrificed putting someone before myself. you know all of these things are really like life skills that you have to have and you learn simply by being dedicated to the game of football and more than that having the men around me that I could look at that. I could see you know what a mansard look like what a man should be like what a husband should be. What father should be like. These are all things that wouldn't have happened for me if it wasn't for the game of football so I'm definitely grateful for that and the impact that the game James Not only my life would would you know literally everyone that's around the and the way I grew up on. It's amazing that you know about planned. Game has been able to change the future for media. Fan and I guess that's in the obvious ways right financially. You are able to do things that you were never able to do while you were growing up. Is that correct. Ori Absolutely financially but because of finances are removed There's opportunity there you know. I had to play play a sport because I knew my mom couldn't pay for college so I got this way. There's military you know I was going to student loan debt which as a scam but you know for me. I like my son. Maybe chooses my boys and my daughter. They choose the doing the extracurricular activities they can do because they want to not because they need it as a tool to get out They don't have to worry about nothing stable. They don't have to worry about moving moving living being in the shelter. Whatever may be they don't have to worry about a lot of different things than simply having stability eliminate so many other things that we often forget about. Did you feel the pressure of having to get a scholarship as you're going through high school. Oh absolutely I mean that's just the that's just the way it is. you know you ah any and every kid that you know they're trying to make your food your mom. Your parents were living with on macy. food on the table bare necessities for life and you know it'd be a talk because when you're just trying when you're surviving that way to try to go out and get the school paid for by your parents so for me. I knew my mom couldn't do it not that. She didn't WanNa do it but you know it just wasn't feasible so I knew I had to go. Aren't it and again for me. It was that or through the military I didn't WanNa have any debt so if you hadn't gotten the scholarship what what branch of the.
Golf: First impressions of Pebble Beach setup for U.S. Open 2019
"Course, the U S Open at Pebble Beach and to talk more about this. We go out to California and out to the progressive insurance, hotline, and bring on Geoff Shackelford senior writer for golf, we contributor, of course to the Gulf channel as well. And what's the feeling I'm jealous? You're at Pebble Beach heading into round one tomorrow. I was at the PGA championship Bethpage just a little bit different scenery than what you're experiencing there at pebble. Yeah. All everything's very jovial here. What's for a US open is not usually the case. Dan Jenkins, you know, tirelessly said the USO grumpy of vents in it, even when you come that will be to put the people usually in a foul mood. But I think the. Combination we had amazing weather, the guys all had great weather to give ready. And today was cool and foggy more normal, but the golf course and set up. Well, it's an unbelievable shape. It's just such a spectacular place. Everything is just sort of a line for a great week, and has been so to see everybody kind of mellow and happy. And it's great. And then, you know after Bethpage the what the have the only concern be fog delay really it changes. Everybody's feelings about an event you not worrying about thunderstorms or anything like that. And so it's a really special place to be in. And I can't wait for get started last year. Plenty of people critical of the US in the way things were set up. You mentioned kind of the course layout to some extent. We'll see how it plays it everything in the next couple of days. But what do you make of that? Will that be a story, you think on, on Saturday, that, that people will be discussing what the US is? How did you? We're, we're going to be in for a nice week where we won't maybe have as much complaining in people taking issue with it. Yeah. Yeah. I'll be shocked if we have any issues I really well, they've taken, I think every precaution imaginable, and then mother nature's helped them the winner here was was very wet, and then it was wet late for the courses just incredibly, I hate using the word lush, but it really good. Fairways just I've never seen them, so perfect. So you're gonna see great scoring too, by the way, the greens are since ational. I just did a piece for golf channel on the, the, the Pohan Yuan, and it's very tricky grass here. And they've had real problems. And I think they've got it kind of figured out as and so you're just gonna have the ability if you're in the fairway to attack the course and I just don't see the USDA wanting to push it. I think they're just fine if ten or twelve under wins, in, they have a nice quiet week Geoff Shackelford senior writer for golf, we contributor to the golf channel joining us here on espionage, in radio ahead of the US open. Pebble and Brooks Kapka, you'll have a chance to win his fifth major five out of the last nine just absurd that he's won four of the last eight and just how he's kind of interacted with the media this week, if you could and we know the kind of what gained some traction was comments about not being in a FOX promo, but I remember. At Bethpage for the PGA championship. The, the comment that struck me was he said, you know, I feel more confident I can get away basically saying things now that that I couldn't or didn't feel comfortable saying when I when I wasn't winning, and I think that was one of those comments, maybe even about the promo, right? That, that maybe he doesn't make a year ago. Yeah. And I'm not sure he's gotten away with comment on bad. You know, he send the person who did it should be fired probably well as an all problem, they, they, they took out of the archives is one of four and it was that was a little outta line. But I'm laughing, of course you're saying it's because these little things that he's coming up with for motivation are, are, are kind of funny, really that, that these are the things that get going, but it works. And you know, golf is a sport where you have so much time to think about everything that can go wrong. And if you go through the history of the game a lot of the great players. Have done this. They've found things to motivate them, or thanks to make them angry to help with nerves really more than anything and for him, it's it's something that's made him focus and it's it's an amazing run. He's on. I just I sorta sad. But I understand why the more of the sporting world hasn't taken note because he's done it on such a variety of courses. It's, it's really the equivalent of, of what some of somebody winning the grand slam tennis because of the variety of places he won. And contended that at a stretch, and so many good players right now when we've heard how deep the fields are. Well, he just kinda dismantled that notion in a way and, and set it in press conferences, which is unbelievable. The discovery out and say, there's basically thirty five people to win and really half of them. Don't even intimidate me. I mean, it's, it's when we look back on this in ten years. We're just going to be shocked. That somebody was that way. But it's just a he's just kind of a once in a lifetime type of person and athlete. And of course, you have tiger who misses the cut at the PGA championship went out to the memorial and got some work in instead of taking five weeks off. Like he did between the masters in the PGA. What, what do you sense? Kind of his mindset is in health first and foremost, I guess heading into this, this week, and you expect him to fair, a lot better than he did at Bethpage. Yeah. He's gonna be fine. I'm not sure I you know, I picked him to win a coming into this because of his love for this place and his great iron play. If you've read anything you've, you know, the narrative this week is Pebble Beach is tiny greens, and it's a great place for our for people who hit their approach shots close. So everybody looks at those numbers. And, and they all line up, as you would expect that every time, US Open's here, the person who hits the most greens is really right there or winning. And. So that suits his game, the only thing that bothers me I just I haven't liked the way he looks like he's moving physically. When he when we've shown him on the golf channel hitting balls looks fine. But I can't say that I look at them, and I feel like he's got the full MO Jo going so again, that's I mean, this is this is a quibble more than anything. But, you know, chiropractor standing there on the range, and you watch and you think, okay well, I don't know if he's one hundred percent. He was honest about how things went, Bethpage. So but he has an edge here, Alexis that's really special besides having one here, just local knowledge and his love of the place. And, and that gives him some kind of extra level of, of confidence, and Mojo. And, and that I, I just think if him something over Brooks if it if it comes down to those. Two and there's a very good chance of will Jesse Shackelford joining us here from Pebble Beach senior writer for golf, we contributor on the golf channel at Jeff shack on Twitter and get Phil Mickelson potential for him to get a career grand slam. Do you think this is his, I guess best chance to, to still do that? I think this year and next year wink fo where he, he almost want our area because after that it's Torrey Pines in his hometown, San Diego, which she now doesn't even play any lives there. So yeah, unfortunately, I wrote a call today saying he has one hundred percents has vow wedding based on his very rude comments. I thought about the US J a couple of weeks ago and said they, they, they get one hundred percent wrong, if it doesn't rain every year, and it was so it was it was it was, it was kind of unacceptable because of the way he bay at the last year. He definitely has been the victim of. Some course setup screw ups and I completely get his rage, but at forty nine with all the stars that potentially aligned for him near with his history. Here is, he's Granddad caddy dairy thirty forty nine on Sunday. He loves California. He loves Pebble Beach the golf guides want him to win this, but then to go and do that, and get that negative energy going. It's just hard not to think, oh, here we go again with fell kind of, you know, get in his own way. So I hope I'm dead wrong. I hope I have to apologize for it the call, but I just feel like when, you know, how golf works union. Every little thing to go right to win a US open double beach. And he's kind of put something out there that, that could be a problem for them. At least you know, if you if you believe in the spirit of the Gulf, got two, two guys that are really interesting to me heading into this weekend is Rory. In, in Jordan speeds and just played better as certainly as of late, a couple of top ten finishes and putting together some weekends for the first time in a while what, what kind of chances do you give speed on a course like this in also ROY who has struggled for much to this season. Well certainly ROY has than last night. Yeah. You know you had an unbelievable. He's been he's been very consistent. I mean one the players and, and those other weeks that he hasn't contended. He's played very nice golf. He his, his issue has been in the majors getting off to a bad start. And after the first round and he dressed today it came up. He knows he's been sensational. So tomorrow is a huge day for Rory now mentally because he's aware of it isn't how these things get going. It could just be total coincidence. That he didn't play well the first round. So you've got to watch him tomorrow. I love his chances because of the way the golf courses he does and the forecast, there's not a lot of rain in the forecast. He does not like win. He's very open about that as well of courses. You know, back to what I said about being less. Roy also, not a fan of super firm and fast. So he likes it here. He likes the history, he knows what. What it would mean to him to win here. And he's coming in off that unbelievable win. So I, I love his chances, but his record in the US open of late has been awful. So, yes, he has some things like Phil where he's got some some, some energy issues that comes the US he kinda lets them get in his head.

"We are first there has to be information in that was fixed open torrey second it has to be information that was not disclosed to the defense but for even if it was not disclosed it has to be showed to be but period all in order to be a constitutional violating require you reversal of the convictions and that's where everything gets hats now is whether or not it's material which generally has been defined that you don't have to who but the bird with the desperate but now of the whole it appeared but berdych so you know when it agrees here that there was a couple torrey evidence at that it was yet the only issue is one didn't material if the defense had how that information and then able to used to my he i'll come up in different and does it kind of got the cloud of doubt over the verdict spots okay said now i need to explain to our listeners why you feel this is a really as he said tricky case there's no physical evidence the prosecution relied on three witnesses what where the other failings of the case what where the same is that the prosecutor's could have done that would have made in your view a material difference to the outcome well and the offense we always say whether tells the best story we had for the government have this i want all with the story of but and they won't get being horribly brutal eyes the defense had no story i wasn't there but i'm not quite sure where i was because these guys were rested weeks or months later they couldn't remember those few minutes they lived in the area so and especially had no story and impact the defense lawyer in part of trying to defend their own particular caught and liberally pointed to others over the ravens that out you know this guy you know the other guy you know this or that so the defense.
