Yoram Hazony Explains the Problem of Idolizing Individual Liberty

"Let's talk about the unit of importance. So in sort of classical liberal tradition and in the United States in particular, the idea has been that the individual is the locus of all politics and the locus of all thoughts. So individual rights are predominant, those rights are supposed to be protected by government you delegate your powers to the government in order to protect those rights so far as the government invades those rights, then it is defeated. It's reason for being I mean, this is the sort of basic language of the Declaration of Independence, the world trained on. And so when we speak of freedom and liberty, that's what Americans tend to think of almost instinctively. You are using in that statement the nation or the state as sort of the locus or the tribe as the locus of importance. Which do you think is the level of abstraction that we should be aiming at conserving? Is it the individual? Is it the family? Is it the nation? Is it the tribe? Which level of abstraction is the most important here? Look, I think if you pick one and insist on it, then you end up being kind of like an a dollar and a dollar of the individual meaning somebody who just puts way too much emphasis on the individual or if you pick the nation, it's very easy for that to turn into something that is oppressive. I think that if you look at the American founding, there actually was a balance between jeffersonians and thinkers like Tom Payne, they basically were the left and they had this liberal view. But there was another party. The party of Washington and Hamilton, John Jay, John Adams, governor Morris who basically was the draftsman of the constitution. They were much more conservative. And they did focus on all you need to do is read the preamble to the American constitution. The first thing that they think that they're doing is a more perfect union. That's a nationalist aim. It's not an individual aim. It's an aim of we as millions of people. We have a problem that our union is insufficiently strong. And of course, of course, the blessings of liberty is there, but it's one of 7 aims. It's not the only. And I think that's fundamentally what Americans at this stage need to rediscover. They've got the individual liberty thing. It does bring blessings. But at this point, I mean, I think it's just, it's run out of control. I mean, if you're so far down the individual liberty path that you can't understand why pornography should not be should not be on the smartphone of every 12 year old kid. If you can't understand that, then you're just so deep into the individual liberty thing that you just don't think there are any other values. And that's what we're looking for is to rebalance along with those other values. That's a conservative way approaching these problems.

" jays" Discussed on The Lead

"Or <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> <Silence> <Speech_Female> Canada to <Speech_Female> play games here. <Speech_Female> This seems like <Speech_Female> it could <Speech_Female> especially impact some of the <Silence> Blue Jays top rivals, <Speech_Female> right? <Speech_Female> Yeah, I mean, it's <Speech_Female> hard to say because <Speech_Female> obviously <Speech_Female> there was players on the Yankees <Speech_Female> that <Speech_Female> were not vaccinated last <Speech_Female> year, there could be players on the <Speech_Female> Red Sox. So we're not vaccinated <Speech_Female> last year. And so <Speech_Female> it's unclear <Speech_Female> how <Speech_Female> many are on each team <Speech_Female> and maybe we won't <Speech_Female> really even find out <Speech_Female> until those first games <Speech_Female> happen in Toronto. There's <Speech_Female> also still <Speech_Female> a long enough window <Speech_Female> right now that players <Speech_Female> could decide <Speech_Female> to get vaccinated. <Speech_Female> I think in the case of the <Speech_Female> Red Sox, there's been some <Speech_Female> stories that <Speech_Female> a lot of their players have <Speech_Female> decided to get vaccinated <Speech_Female> and one of <Speech_Female> the motivations was <Speech_Female> to play those games in <Speech_Female> Toronto. And so <Speech_Female> I think it's still kind of unclear <Speech_Female> to say how <Speech_Female> much it'll impact <Speech_Female> opposing teams <Speech_Female> until we actually see <Speech_Female> those games come because <Speech_Female> there's still enough <Speech_Female> of a window that players <Speech_Female> could be in <Speech_Female> the process of getting vaccinated <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> now. <Speech_Female> What if <Speech_Female> the Blue Jays <Speech_Female> had to say about this <Speech_Female> whole thing and <Speech_Female> whether it could be <Speech_Female> a competitive <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> advantage for them? Yeah, <Speech_Female> it's interesting because <Speech_Female> I think <Speech_Female> that the Blue Jays <Speech_Female> themselves have been <Silence> a team that have <Speech_Female> been <Speech_Female> greatly <Speech_Female> impacted if not the <Speech_Female> most impacted team <Speech_Female> during the <Speech_Female> pandemic because <Speech_Female> they obviously could not play <Speech_Female> at home for all of <Speech_Female> the 2020 season. <Speech_Female> They couldn't play <Speech_Female> at home for <Speech_Female> more than <SpeakerChange> half of <Speech_Female> the 2021 season. <Speech_Female> It's a big day <Speech_Female> for Toronto sports <Speech_Female> fans, the Blue Jays <Speech_Female> are back in the city <Speech_Female> for the first time in <Speech_Female> 22 months <Speech_Female> because of the pandemic, <Speech_Female> greeting them <Speech_Female> tonight 15,000 <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> fans as they <Speech_Female> took on the Kansas City <Speech_Female> Royals, and so <Speech_Female> they have <Speech_Female> gone through their <Speech_Female> fair share of disadvantages. <Speech_Female> I <Speech_Female> think from this <Speech_Female> pandemic. And so <Speech_Female> the way that <Speech_Female> they're viewing it is these <Speech_Female> are the rules and we <Speech_Female> had to follow the rules <Speech_Female> that <Speech_Female> Canada laid out for the <Speech_Female> last two <Speech_Female> years <Speech_Female> and I think <Speech_Female> another way to view it <Speech_Female> is, of course, if the <Speech_Female> Yankees aren't <Speech_Female> bringing a full squad <Speech_Female> to Toronto, <Speech_Female> yeah, <Speech_Female> maybe that is a home <Speech_Female> field advantage for the <Speech_Female> Blue Jays. At the same <Speech_Female> time, the Blue Jays <Speech_Female> have had to <Speech_Female> be very cognizant <Speech_Female> of who they could add <Speech_Female> to their team. <Speech_Female> They couldn't necessarily <Speech_Female> add anyone they <Speech_Female> wanted if a <Speech_Female> player was not <Speech_Female> willing to be vaccinated. <Speech_Female> It was something <Speech_Female> that they had to <Speech_Female> be aware of, <Speech_Female> more so than any other <Speech_Female> club. And so <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> yes, I think that, <Speech_Female> you know, you could <Speech_Female> view it as somewhat of <Speech_Female> an advantage, <Speech_Female> but I think <Speech_Female> really it's <Speech_Female> kind of just maybe <Speech_Female> baseball karma <Speech_Female> working itself out a little <Speech_Female> bit, just given what the <Speech_Female> Blue Jays have <SpeakerChange> had to go through <Speech_Female> the last number of <Speech_Female> years. Finally, <Speech_Female> Caitlin, somewhat <Speech_Female> along these lines, <Speech_Female> as you <Speech_Female> wrote this team will be <Speech_Female> hitting a pretty big home field <Speech_Female> milestone really soon. <Speech_Female> On April <Speech_Female> 8th, the Blue Jays <Speech_Female> will be playing in <Speech_Female> front of a packed house <Speech_Female> at roger center for <Speech_Female> the first time since <Silence> 2019. <Speech_Female> Given <Speech_Female> all the expectations <Speech_Female> for this team <Speech_Female> and how long it's <Speech_Female> been since they've <Speech_Female> had a full house in Toronto, <Speech_Female> what do you <Speech_Female> expect the <SpeakerChange> atmosphere <Speech_Female> to be like at that game? <Speech_Female> Yeah, I think it's <Speech_Female> going to be really <Speech_Female> special to be there. I mean, <Speech_Female> I was obviously there when <Speech_Female> they returned <Speech_Female> to Toronto at the end of July <Speech_Female> last year. And though <Speech_Female> the stadium <Speech_Female> was

"That's the best and Major League Baseball and you see the package not to put any sort of pressure on Matt Chapman to have the season that Marcus Simeon had, but Matt Chapman is an elite third baseman and that's gonna do a lot for the Blue Jays infield. He really solves that problem for them and he'll be around this year and next year as well. So after last year's disappointment and all the turnover, it seems like the expectations are pretty high in Toronto and maybe nothing sums that up better than a quote this spring from Vlad, junior for anyone who hasn't heard it. Can you tell us what he said? Yes, so Vladimir gives a lot of time to the media. He talks to us quite often, but he can be somewhat guarded in what he'll say. And he wants to make sure that the team is at the forefront of everything that he says. But this year he had some good quotes and of course one that stuck out was vladdy saying something along the lines of what we did last year was the trailer and this year what we're going to do is the movie. I think what we did what we did last year was a trailer. Now you guys want to see the movie. This, of course, is already a T-shirt. So I also have to ask this. What should we title this movie? Yeah, I wonder. It's like you said, I mean, it's a quote that could go on a T-shirt. It's a quote that certainly could be painted on the walls at the blue days facility, but I think a lot of us loved it. And it's fun to see Vlad's personality coming out more and more. He's always the center of attention on the Blue Jays. He loves to joke around with his teammates and have fun and he's a jokester, prankster around his team. Mimicking what Romano does on the mound. Now that's funny. Tell you he has fun, nothing. Both swiveling back and forth, bending his knees. Now Romano doesn't know he's doing it, but I bet you a bunch of the other guys on the blue J team know he's doing it. And so he has a ton of personality and it's really fun to see that come up a little bit more in some media appearances with him and I'm sure it's something that's going to continue as he builds his star in the major leagues and of course as the Blue Jays become more of a prominent team in the major leagues. Well, along those lines grower junior just turned 23 and there was actually a video recently on.

"So Caitlin, right now you're talking to us from Toronto, but you were recently in dunedin, Florida, where the Blue Jays hold spring training. And that was there actual home for a bunch of last season due to COVID restrictions in Canada. Is it strange to be there now that it's back to being just their spring training home and not their actual home or is this whole thing like a bit confusing? It's actually been cool to be back there because I haven't been back to dunedin Florida since 2020 when I was down there for spring training and then of course the world kind of changed before our eyes and so it was exciting for me to finally get back there. It's been a long time and just having those spring training vibes those relaxed vibes again and kind of just starting to enjoy and ease myself back into the baseball schedule. Well, before we get into what's ahead for this team, we wanted to ask you about the latest move among many for the Blue Jays. And that's a trade about fielders. Blue Jays, Twitter is in a bit of a ruckus right now. This is a pretty big trade. Randall Grisham is going to the Colorado Rockies for rymel Tapia. Why do you think they made this deal? Randall Gretchen, you know, he was a player for the Blue Jays that hit a lot of home runs, but especially when they signed George Springer, Randall was kind of an awkward fit on the roster in the sense that he was more so the fourth outfielder and his qualities and his abilities kind of were a bit redundant in the sense that he hit for a lot of power, but he didn't get on base and the Blue Jays have a lot of power hit on their team. He hit from the right side. They really needed that left handed hitter. And so that's what they get in this trade. One of the sort of question marks I have about this trade is what are the Blue Jays do in terms of their center field depth because now there's a lot of pressure on George Springer to play every day in center field because Randall Gretchen was their sort of best backup center Fielder, but what they get with this rocky straight as they get another left handed bat in there and I think that he gives them a lot of different skill sets, the arm base, some speed, some things that they're team didn't have a lot of and this is just gives them another sort of like weapon to diversify their lineup a little bit. That's just one of many moves the J is made to retool for this season, but before we get to that, can you remind us why they felt the need to retool in the first place? How did things end down the stretch for the Jays last year? Yeah, I mean, the Blue Jays last season was definitely exciting. It was one of the better seasons that they've had in a long time for this team is this team has kind of gone through competitive eras and then they've gone through a rebuild and then they were coming out of it last year. I mean, it was really an incredible season for Vlad junior just because it really kind of showed that he lived up to all that potential that was waiting for him when he made his major league debut a couple of years ago. Swinging a drive, get up and out of here and Grand Slam for Vladimir Guerrero junior. Obviously he finished with 48 home runs, which was tied for the most in the league. Breaking ball hit high indeed to left field. Tyga. The best hitter on the planet right now has done it again and it's a brand new ball game at Fenway. He was really the Blue Jays MVP for the entire season. He was nearly the league MVP. Obviously just getting beaten out by Shohei Ohtani and because Vlad does not pitch, that's the one thing that he does not do. So close. If it wasn't for shohei, definitely probably would have gotten that MVP. Exactly. So of course we all remember that the Blue Jays finished with 91 wins last year. Usually that's good enough to get on the playoffs, but it fell one win short. It was very disappointing for a lot of players because they really turned it on down the stretch, which kind of coincided with their return to Toronto as well. But at the same time, being so close being at 91 wins also gives you a lot of hope for the future. And so essentially the Blue Jays had a lot to build upon heading into this off season. Let's live in this moment after they missed out on the playoffs. How did Vlad and the rest of the team respond to that disappointment of coming up just short? When you have that much sort of tension and energy and then you fall a little bit short, it is quite deflating. We heard Vlad say to us a couple weeks ago that he couldn't even immediately go back home to the Dominican Republic. He just couldn't really accept that his season was over. I just couldn't believe it. It was so bad that I stayed in Toronto for 30 days because I just couldn't believe it. So he stayed in Toronto a few extra days just to kind of decompress and relax. He said he watched a lot of TV. I think it was a bit just like trying to slowly accept that the season was over and that was disappointing for him, especially because as much as we talk about Vlad's individual skills and I think that he is sort of headed toward a career where he's going to win a lot of individual accolades. He is very much all about the team. And so as much as it was deflating last year for them to fall just short, I think it also has served as fuel and motivation for them. Well, Guerrero junior eventually did board a flight back to the Dominican Republic back home. And at this point, the J is in general manager Ross Atkins got extremely busy. Can you take us through their big additions, both before and after the lockout? Yeah, so basically, I mean, they needed to build their starting rotation again because of the guys that they lost out of the rotation. We all know that Robbie ray had an excellent year last year with the Blue Jays obviously winning the Cy Young. He didn't resign with them though. He went to Seattle. Stephen Matt went to St. Louis. So the Blue Jays had to fill some holes in their rotation. The first big signing for them was Kevin gausman. Right hander, Kevin gausman, and the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a 5 year $110 million contract, the 30 year old struck out 227 batters in a 192 innings with a two 8 one ERA. He will kind of take the place of Robbie ray in terms of being the leader of the rotation. One thing I should also note as well as the Blue Jays extended Jose burritos. But Jose barrios signed the second largest contract in the history of the organization. 7 years, a $131 million, they acquired him at the trade deadline on July 30th. They traded for him last year. It was a big blockbuster trade, and he was going to be with them this year, but was kind of unsure would he be walking away from the scene when he hit free agency, but him signing a 7 year extension means that he's going to be a core piece of those rotation for years and years on. And then kikuchi was someone that they signed post lockout. And this is news. You say kikuchi, three years, 36 million bucks. Going north to the border to the Toronto Blue Jays. He's a guy that they've liked for a long time, especially since they see a lot of upside in what he can do. Marcus Simeon also was an incredible player for them last year and was a near MVP candidate as well. He went to Texas. And so the booties had to find a way to make up for what they lost in semi and they brought in Matt Chapman. Matt Chapman are not coming off his best year, but he is a defensive standout. You see 63 defensive runs saved at third base since 2018..

"Shown that his average it's at least considerable in terms of making him a everyday infielder. And that's what you ought to at least consider it. That's why. I don't really think that they're going to go out and sign an infielder now. Is it or trade for one now. is it possible. Absolutely no marcus siemian. I think would like to be back. Obviously he's comfortable with this team and the blue jays comfortable with him. But i think if you're looking for other areas to improve those might take priority..

"Rbi vladimir grow junior to eleven to doubles so both of were doubles in. Both of them were pretty. Big doubles both drove in. Rbi but one walk for him. And this is the kicker. I think to oscar over eleven. One walk for strikeouts. So when you have george springer doing all these things at the top of the line up within the next three guys are i guess. Three of the next four guys including boba are pretty cold. The offense isn't going to do anything. And i think that's the reason why the blue jays losses series. Is that three of the top five guys in your lineup or cold. You aren't being able to drive in runs or leaving guys scoring position and even as much as the bottom line. Didn't they series. I think they did especially the last game. You of corey dickerson. Having a good night of the plate you have santiago espinel doing his best help the blue jays out. It doesn't matter what the bottom in the lineup does. If the top supposedly three of the best hid five hitters in your lineup are going ice cold when the season is on the line. So that is pretty much exclusively who i blame for the losses in this series We'll get into a little bit later about some of the frustrations with game one. And how you know. You can't totally blame the blue jays for lack of execution but The offense is really what it comes down to in this series. Who and you look at Look at the yankees. Big is home runs in that last game or the first game the jay was they were leading. I think at one point are tighter..

"Still have an important four game series. And you have to make the most out of this as well and you go back to yesterday in particular the baltimore. Orioles helped out the the jays yesterday with the late ending. Early game. Rally over the yankees. I think that's something that no. Nobody really predicted that was going to happen. And of course. Cleveland helps out the jason's while they beat the red sox. Eleven five so the jays get some help yesterday. They make up some ground as much as it doesn't look like that on the standings as much as it should because the jays gain a couple of games on the yankees who are now only half of game ahead of the red sox and that first wildcard spot because i believe at the beginning of the week and are about two games so as much as it doesn't really show up. The jays made up some significant ground this weekend and they can't stop and they have to continue this throughout the the rest of the season. But we already know this and we're gonna see what happens as well this week in new york right. That's the big thing like even a week ago. We were saying the yankees were uncatchable that the blue jays would just have to catch the red sox and now like the red sox and the yankees are essentially tied like yeah the yankees have won game up but for all intents and purposes there in the exact same spot in the standings and the blue jays for them it's much more advantageous to be trying to catch the yankees and the red sox. 'cause they have seven games against the yankees including this four-game set. So you know we can talk more about the situations and what might happen. But if you take three or four in this series i know. That's a huge ask. You're talking about the yankees who are a good team. They won thirteen in a row at one point even though they are foreign six in their last ten games. They are good team. But if you take three or four from the yankees then in the worst case scenario you're tuned a half back of the second wildcard spot. Depending what happens with the red sox. In the best case scenario you are two games back from that second wildcard spot so you can see the situation unfolding where you're going into the final two three weeks of the season with only two and a half games to make up including a three-game set against the yankees. So it's very possible if you come out of this series with a big series win that the blue jays can make up that ground being the conversation until the final weeks of the season the one sticking point in that potentially is a seattle mariners because they are the one team now officially in-between the blue jays and the wild card spots because this series with oakland as huge as it was to pick up those games on the keys and the red sox it was even bigger to pick up those games on oakland itself. We officially passed oakland in the standings. It's only by one one. Hundreds of a percentage point in the standings but we are listed officially above oakland in the standings so essentially tied. But you know just because we've had to less games in them and have are. Each of us are eleven games over five hundred effectively. The blue jays have a better record than them anyway. The one sticking point is seattle. Because that's the team in the way and they've won five in a row they're hot. They're six and four in their last ten there. Three games back to the red sox three and a half from the yankees so there are a game ahead of the blue jays. So that's the sticking point in this plan that you're laying out for the blue jays to make it back into the post season and make it back into contention but it's still very possible and you look at how this team is playing right now..

"Is going to be and Yeah there really. Isn't anybody else i told you. There's about two guys. Not even maybe just jordan romano who you have complete complete utter confidence and in terms of closing out a game for this team so i mean that's the way it is. I'm just saying to what a story would be The can somehow get back into this. Of course it's still possible but basin we already. We went over this already. It doesn't look good but of course you can never rule anything out in a. It's funny too because you talk about a strength of schedule you talk about an easy schedule coming up. You talk about easy games and You know this is the trap series for the jason get swept by washington and now this weekend. I'm not sure how confident. I feel against a team. Like detroit either way. Because i know you're at home but look with jesus did in washington and it's kind of funny too because it it turns out the jays weren't the only ones Pretty much this week with a an easy match up to i guess blow at earned terms of disappointing at its finest so the padres of course they gets what by the rockies the reds also gets wet by the cubs or lose two straight and the phillies lost to the diamondbacks last night. There was a tweet of that that just came Came out but you know for a team like the jays who have all these opportunities ahead of them. We talked about at the beginning of the year. The schedules the hardest in baseball. Yes and all the sudden it turns into one of the easier ones down the road but it's easier said than done. These guys neither games. We swede literally went live about this yesterday before the game happened in washington where i said a sweep was the only outcome of this and it turns out completed a complete slap in the face back to me because it was a suite. We got you left. It was for the wrong team. And now when you look at it your four and a half games out. So that's why. I i'm not sure what else to think of. Of course you can't rule anything out. Of course people are going to watch and be excited. I mean you want to a reason to watch as well we'll get someone hernandez and who is completely Was the story of this road trip in terms of keeping this team somewhat afloat trying to keep or trying to do anything they can to kind of keep the steam alive and he goes to for forte homerun in double. I mean obviously marcus semi also homered. I mean those are guys that have tried to keep us alive. We we we know about the simeon. Had the go ahead home run today and the pitching couldn't back it up so i mean it's been the same story all year. We'll see what happens. I guess as we head into these next series is as we close out the month of august. September there's lots of baseball left but you're going to have to rely on a lot of teams to lose on top of expecting jails to win these games so that's where we're at right now..

"To watch. I'm still going to cheer probably gonna lose my voice a couple times watching any of the potential comebacks that we see but it it does. I think come with a bit of a the realization that yeah this team. It's probably where the two thousand fourteen was where it's still fun to watch. It's still a very exciting. There's definitely huge upside and there's a lot of stuff to come. I think are probably a world series trophy within the next two or three years but as of this season way too many things have to go right and for that reason as shark tank would say i'm out on them all right. Well there you have it not a great picture from us and what's gonna happen with the blues is there is a best case scenario where the blue jays make the postseason like there is still a chance because you oakland slumping. You got that series against oakland. Maybe they come out. They win two of three of those. You picked up a game on oakland you start rattling off a few wins. You get hot a little bit. You put up that whatever was twenty five and fourteen twenty five and thirteen stretch. That gets you in the conversation for those last few series against the yankees so blue jays. Second last series. This season is against new york so that just goes to show at the end of september. They could have the potential. I know you were saying you think the yankees are going to be squarely in that. First wildcard spot but bluejays could have that potential. Take that spot. In the last few days of the season there is a world where that happens. It's just everything has to go right. You gotta get julian. Mary weather back in the majors. You gotta get ryan burrow back in the majors. You gotta get george springer back you know hopefully only missing twenty games. You've got to win that series against oakland. You've got to win all those series that you have against new york you've gotta run the table in the next few games and you can't afford to keep losing games like these to the washington nationals of all team so like that things have to go the best possible way over the next forty three games in order for the blue jays to make the poses and and the odds of that happening to me are five percent and that's why i am on this season. I'll be pleasantly surprised. I'll cheering my heart out. If the blue jays make it to the postseason but the odds are so incredibly slim. That i'm not gonna pin my hat and hang my hat all that so So many people as you alluded to brazen blaming a lot of these games on charlie montoya. It's nothing new. We come here every week. And we say the exact same things about charlie montoya just so happens that he rolls out in a happens to happen in every single game where it seems like you can blame charlie montolio and i don't i'm i'm just fed up with it like i'm fed up with people blaming charlie montoya for all these mistakes If you have a good bullpen. You're gonna look like a good manager if you have a bad bullpen. You're gonna look like a bad manager at some point. You have to stop making excuses for the guys that the blue jays have in their bullpen. There's no one to throw. There's no good pitchers in the bullpen. To brad hand. Good to trevor richards who screwed up before. You don't wanna go to brad. Hand good adam. Silver who put some guys on base ahead of brad hand who loaded the bases previously before brad hand came in and that seattle series and walked in the winning run..

"I don't know if you guys feel the same way but to me it's over like if you lose two games to the washington nationals and fall five games back of a wild card with forty games to play like you're out of it there. There's no chance and on top of that. You lose george springer for the remainder of the season. I know last episode. I said that if springer goes to the ten day. I l at all even if he comes back immediately after those ten days. You're done this year. And looks like springer could be out for the season so i stand by that assessment. I think they're done and i hate to say that. Obviously i don't take any joy declaring the blue jays dead. Because i am a blue jay fan. But it's as simple as that. The odds of you going on a run in this situation without george springer to me. It's slim if not impossible and you look at the numbers for like you said jay take up for making the postseason The blue jays are probably going to need at least ninety. Two wins to make the postseason. That's what it's looking like right now with the yankees surging you know. You got oakland slumping. You got boston's lumping but right now it's looking like ninety two wins. The best forty four game stretch of the season. They forty three games left before the end of the season. But the best forty four game stretch that they've been on this year is twenty eight They have to win. Twenty-nine winds to get to the end of the season. And make the postseason so and you're looking at doing all that. They're george springer if he's on the injured list with the momentum that the team has right now i just don't see it possible. I mean the the best forty four game stretchable bluejays have had this season with george springer was twenty five and nineteen. So i. i really don't see it as possible if you've got to win. Twenty nine games including some head to head matchups against oakland against new york. That got seven games against new york left. Four games are three games against oakland. Like i just. I don't see it as possible. I don't think the blue jays can do it. And it's unfortunate. But i think they're out of it and i'm willing to write off this season so definitively for you guys do you think like are you in or are you out on this team. Are they sticking around and do they have a chance or are you. Kind of the ship has sailed for you. You're done with the blue jays air because they'll still watch games. of course. i'll be cheering for them. But i i really do not see that happening. Listen it's tough because you go back and forth. While the i i've been going back and forth over is not of course. Here's the thing i'm not going to. My expectations are pretty much zero. I'm going to make it clear to you. Guys there is zero however is the do they still have a chance. I of course they do. They need a lot of things to go right..

"Instagram saying this guy's got gorilla glue on his fingers like it was ridiculous the movement he was getting but it was fantastic and i think considering the circumstances and how a lot of people were saying the blue jays gave up so much for him. He's going to have to be good and he was good. I'm extremely happy that he was able to do that. And really shot up those those people that thought it was too high. Have a return yet. This is exactly what we expected from. Jose burritos and going back to our deadline. Talk on saturday. This is what we said. He's gonna come over here and he's gonna dominate. He's going to be a main piece of this rotation and it pretty much got right to it at sunday. you know. Maybe he was a little bit nervous. At first guys were mentioning a bumpy couple of innings. To start in that was true but it felt like ended obviously seemed like as start went on. He became more comfortable and he became more dominant. And yeah jacob. T- talking about his breaking ball. His curveball was nasty. It was incredible to see the movement on it and he got nine whiffs on his curveball. So nine people swung and missed that on twenty one swings yesterday. Percents percentage of forty three percent and that was his curveball alone. And you know we all know as well coming back or going back to his days. The twins earlier on the season. Pretty much all the twenty twenty one Opponents all also just not hitting good against them to eighteen batting average to seventy seven on base percentage three eighty five slugging percentage and he's just been dominant this year..

"You know really tipped scales last question on this before. I wanna ask you a few about the actual onfield team before. I let you go but in terms of the decision. I know the boarder doesn't open to regular fully vaccinated. Americans until august ninth and the baseball team gets to allow non-vaccinated americans albeit in quarantine in as of july thirtieth has there been any blowback about this. I'm sure that in some quarters has been. Look you know everything that's happening ch- in these days seems to draw some criticism in some level of complaint. But i haven't seen any substantial Complaining about this. And i just this one is is so. I think on the list of grievances that people can have. This one's got to be small list. Only a of the reaction. I've tended to see him and certainly that's probably limited a little bit in the scope of sports fans but people are really excited about this. You know people want to see life returning back to normal. I believe and you know this is a small little sign of it and it's something that hasn't been in the community for a long time It's one of the most high profile businesses. It's been disrupted because of the pandemic and to see it coming back to toronto there being some excitement about the team. They're they're being some optimism around it. I think all those pieces you know a largely drowned out anybody. Who's who sort of you know taking issue with With some of the points of the plan. So you mentioned at the beginning of this conversation Justin smoak last game as a j being the last time the jays played in toronto. How different will the team that plays on. July thirtieth be from that team from september twenty. Nineteen while it's just about half the roster right now has never played a home game in toronto so you feel wanted to sort of put it into context. I think that one really frames it. You know before the twenty twenty season the The big free agent edition for the blue jays was Left-handed start starter. Engine review and he got the biggest contract ever given to a pitcher by the franchise and he hasn't thrown one pitch in toronto's a number of the blue jays just yet George springer. Who was the major addition. This time around. You know he. He's been here as a as a visiting player but he hasn't even been able to come visit toronto because You know the border has been closed so he made. He made the decision to sign here. Based on the fact that his experience previous player and believing the team believing in the fragile is one hundred fifty million dollars over over. Six seasons probably helps too. But there's certainly a bit of a leap of faith. There for a lot of these players coming home is going to be a bit of a new experience. But it tells you what how much change there's been The twenty nine thousand nine season was In many ways the bottom of the of the of the fall for obliges team had been in the ploughs in two thousand fifteen sixteen another lost ninety five games that season and that was really a transitionary year. Since the rebound has begun. You know the blue jays hadn't gotten home yet so you know the the team that is coming back to. Toronto is one that you know. Blues fans haven't gotten a chance to see in person and become familiar with in person the last time. The blue jays plead in toronto. We were discussing whether or not in vlad. Guerrero junior would ever live up to expectations. Pretty funny right How dumb deals conversation seemed now. I think that his emergence is a really important reminder for sports fans about why you have to have patience and it's difficult to have patients write us. You want your team to do well. I understand that in. It's emotional but vladimir guerrero. Junior was a kid when came up and had all the pressure in the world on him was supposed to set the world on fire and he simply needed the major leagues to show him what he didn't know he needed to understand what that meant for him. And how that impacted training routines his personal habits the way he prepared for baseball games all those things and because he wants to be the best player in the world he put in the work to make sure that it would happen. Once he realized what the gaps were in his game. You know to me it's a it's an affirmation of y. You have to have runway even for talented players. Incredibly talented players generational talented young players And you know he certainly rewarding that faith and it's full credit to him you know. He made the decision. He decided that he needed to be accountable to his teammates and he is having a season that is on track to be the greatest offensive season in blue jays history. And it's just absolutely special. What he's doing and it's it's a lot of fun to watch it last question for you. You'll be there. i assume. On july thirtieth. What do you think the atmosphere there is going to be like just based on what. I'm seeing on social media and from the players even. I think it'll be kind of emotional. Oh yeah it's definitely going to be that it's going to be a lot of things to write. Let's keep in mind that july thirtieth is also the trade deadline right and you know if they do something that captures the imagination people. A little bit as well You know it could be an absolutely incredible atmosphere. And you know i think back to twenty fifteen and the day that troy to a whiskey debuted you know. His acquisition was a shock. It just completely spun around the perception of what the blue were what they were trying to accomplish. And when he debuted. It wasn't a sellout crowd. It was fingers into in the thirties. Mid-thirties maybe But the crowd was as electric any that. I can remember because there was just sort of this moment where everybody was like. we've arrived. this is it. This is what we've been waiting for. And i can see there being a similar type of vibe on the thirtieth right you got people who have been locked down for the majority of the past year. Change having seen their baseball team in a long time. You've got a young team. That's seemingly emerging And then coming back for the first time this this reconnection with the club and then you throw him a move or two excitement into the mix. It can be pretty special. I'm excited shai. Thank you for this. And hopefully i see around the ballpark this summer. "That's what i want out of any any any. Follow up on that on that gift you do you know. I would love to have springer on this team. I think that when you have that at outfield position filled. And you have that sort of depth in your system that having to give up any player personnel. You're just giving up at that point just money. I think it's a must for the blue jays at this point right. We're we're talking about trade ships and what we're going to have to give up and how we're going to have to fill the void in comparison to just signing. Someone a sounds easy enough but again you're right yet to convince that player to want to come into fifty fifty marriage at that point I'm for it man. Sign me up. And if it i think last week we settled on seventy eight years. He thirty one. You were talking about an eight year contract. It's a lot for me. It assuming the blues have the goal a little high on the on the term. It's a lot for me having a player until thirty nine. Forty but if you're playing for if you're paying rather for three or four years of a leap production as the costume businessman and that's a future adam. Problems future bluejays problem. I don't care that someone else's problem sounds like tried to lewinsky trade s future guy. Guys man. I don't care polit up all up. What are your thoughts. The want that as christmas gift i will have no issues with that as christmas gift. Unfortunately as much as like i said i have one gripe on the content of what happened in the past with george springer in the team that blew slapped mentioning name the he tracks too. Many boxes for the blue jays makes too much sets there assist. He plays smeller defensively satterfield. We the center fielder we need. Somebody hit the middle of the or it. There's as many things and like when you can literally to solve this solving it with money and we have money. It shouldn't be a problem. is literally just. They had to convince him to like you. "So the fact that he's even bring that up you have to like you said to understand where the rooms are coming from. Yeah some of the may not be accurate. May some may be doing doing that on purpose but a lot of them are true and a lot of them are factual that the jays are looking to do this looking to do that but just patients it's not even december like oh my i just i'm gonna be very i'm gonna that's gonna be even more funny though if they make a big signing a trade the amount of people that will change the way of thinking and how they will celebrate and like but i like this team signed spent one of the most spent money on hundred or less you're eighty million dollars like you said markets like it was a year ago they made this signing and everyone right at the front because it was the exact same thing. Nobody thought it was going to happen. Nobody thought it was going to happen when it happened. People freaked out and people were excited. So it's probably going to happen again this year with somebody if they bring him in and you're going to see the exact same reaction but like i said just it's not even december like we have so much more to go like the winter meetings even here yet let them let the market kind of play on the way it is like it always does and you know if you're not going to be the first will make a big signing than just like. I said they're doing nothing wrong. Everyone's kind of taking it slow which is fine then. It's barely started anyway. So you know that. Someone's going to pick up because it has to because spring training will come sooner rather than later so Patients by you know. But if you love this podcast, you can participate it'd be it'd be an honor to have your artwork be our main podcast logo Craig came up with this idea. All credit goes to you I think it's a great one and any way that we can incorporate our fans. And fans of the Blue Jays would be. Absolutely welcome and I hope that we get some some awesome submissions. I'm sure we will. Get creative guys. It's cool with us. Whatever you want to do but my only thing I would suggest is don't use any official logo. Don't use the official Blue Jay logo we will get flagged and we won't be able to use that on aggie podcasts. Yours they just won't accept it because well, it's copy written so fun loving thing that. Share, our Cheeky Shenanigans ballroom type chat here you'll probably have some extra points. Yeah? Yeah. Jay's eighteen year. Officially on task, we would love to see it and we'll share the love as they come in on the next few weeks. We're not really putting a deadline on this whole thing. So let's just keep them coming. Why don't we? Why don't we need to show my horrible one I I I loved the drawing was was creative but why don't Just. Got Suggesting. "So if you guys want to throw him out, maybe I considered the top of my dome, but he's going to be a free agent and twenty twenty four. So you have control for as long as review or a little bit longer we'll be on this team. That's a real plus when Pearson gets healthy, you have that already that's pretty good. I. Think if you're going to ask the prospects for Cleveland's pitchers, just throw everything at chamber. Okay Yeah more or you know they're down on xactly sack and he was looking pretty damn good that we've had a police. TORONTO. So there you go out. And maybe the price won't be so high and. I honestly with the Cleveland Connection, they wouldn't shock me that those conversations are taking place just because a know that farm system in I. Know It's been a few years but still allows guys they're they're Cleveland's they had something to do with. So many drafts Johnson's then true. Yeah. Now you're out wrong and you know just want to touch on the red sox again i. absolutely still think that there's GonNa be some trade of veterans off the Red Sox roster the only untouchable in my mind on the Red Sox and three guys right now Denver's. Pogue Arts and Vertigo just because they got him or David Price McKee back beyond that if you get really crazy. JD MARTINEZ ANYBODY I Heavy contract. But I can see jd Martinez being moved or Andrew Benintendi because I think they're growing very frustrated Benintendi and Benintendi still have control I. Know He's been absolute crap this year but I mean I know the outfield that we thought was going to be a point that needed addressing looking damn good right now for the Blue Jays with brick Banou Randall Grischuk and the Oscar and Lord escorial. Hell at Andrew Benintendi before it's outfielder at rotated there from time to time. So I think the red sox could be pillaged, and if you're not the only other area I would add is the bullpen. You can never have enough bullpen help and you're in the playoffs. Then I know our full of staff who knows what the rosters will be. COMPLA- off time. Looking some royals and in Kennedy would be a nice armed add at the back end of the bullpen. He's got starter stuff wasn't damn good starter for a little while and either pretty damn good reliever too. So I'm going to be looking up royals for Kennedy as well. novelist. Lists. He wasn't Anthopoulos trump. Speaking of the Royal Trump Rosenthal Zeman frigging most talked about guys in major, League baseball trades so far. So maybe everybody's overlooking Kennedy. Maybe Brennan you are right. We don't get an arm the starting rotation and is a nice way to solidify the actual rotation by freeing up a spot. For K. or whoever to come out of the bullpen and going to the rotation, and it's still have that same level of talent and they're the same Louis Ambulatory Hawkins..

"I'll be your host, my name's at Corsair joined by my fellow Co, of course, as always Mr Craig Board and Mr Brennan Pentecost. What's up guys? Doing. Good Buddy how doing I'm excited I'm excited to share. Fifteen, boys. All a little bit of postseason baseball in the mix here even though we have about a month away but. You know there's a whole lot to break down. There's a whole lot of postseason talk to break down. There's a whole lot of trade deadline talked to break down. But it should be noted first of all that we are recording this. Friday evening eight, twenty eight that is August the twenty eighth for those that are listening on the podcast. Edition I guess you could say this show and not the streep There is currently lie bluejays baseball going on right now with the Jays hosting the Orioles, their nemesis for this year as it seems. That being said, the Jays are pretty much sitting pretty right now on the eighth spot of the American league with a record of fifteen in fourteen. If I'm not mistaken, they haven't been below five hundred since August the nineteenth. So they're they're in pretty good shape when it comes to that things are looking good when it comes to the team itself but I should note to start the show the state of sports in general. Is In an a pretty much an unfortunate, yet familiar space. So I kind of want to start with this. We can spend as much time as you guys want when it comes to this, but I think it's worth mentioning we've touched on this before and history has terrible of repeating itself and this time to a much larger degree with racism still being prevalent in our society. Unfortunately, the sports world is taking action with players and teams boycotting pretty much or protesting their respective games, the Jays notwithstanding on Thursday evening, the Jays, and the Red Sox game was pretty much boycotted to raise awareness for racial injustice specifically. Spawned on the acts committed to Mr Jacob Blake, who was shot seven times in the back by by policeman Brennan. Start with you how do you think the team responded to this I know the red sox sort of took the ball initially in the bluejays followed. What are your thoughts also should be noted that today is MLB celebration of Jackie. Robinson days usually held in April but today given the shortened season. This is celebrating it that was a word salad for me you can take it over. Now, very good way to start it off out of MRS discussion that everybody should have especially with three of us who are Caucasian male over the age of twenty eight.

"I don't think they'll stick him in the minors because I think another team will want to acquire him. I think he'll be useful for another team is just where the ages are right now. They're situation the fact that he strikes out so much it just the way it's working out doesn't seem like he's going to stick around with the. Blue Jays unfortunately great guy. I with all these players that you know. We say horrible things about how they're playing but it's really something that you know. You wish the best for them off the field It's just you gotTa to put the best product on the field So we'll move on now to some of the questions we got from you guys and our first question comes from. Aj he asked Aj Am nate. Excuse me he asked how long Until the Blue Jays are contending team. How long until we see them you know pushing for a championship and I think you know I was just talking about the the stages rebuild. I think they're just past the middle of the rebuild right now. I'd say the middle of the rebuild was the trade deadline or the start of this season and over the off season. They'll start shifting their gaze towards the next stage which is acquiring players. That are gonNA stick around for a long time that are going to be helping the Blues Compete and that means I think in two thousand twenty. They're not GONNA do much. They might be a few games below five hundred But I don't think they're GONNA compete be competing at all next season But twenty twenty one. I think that's the time when we'll see the blue jays looking towards a wildcard spot. I think they'll fall short in twenty twenty one honestly. I don't think they'll be able to pull it off that soon. But in twenty twenty two. I think that's the year that we'll see them. Dead in the heat of a wild card race or or Division Championship in the alias. Store or something of that kind. And that's what that's why I'm really excited for. Its three years down the road but I'm still excited that you're definitely right there. Those days of the you know the dark times during the rebel against the whole rebuild as a dark time. But you know those days of seeing on her Solarte's no offense to him hitting cleanup for team everyday Those days of You know those days are over and the only way the contract from this point as anybody would seem would be upwards after all the youngsters that we finally see again. I've I've said it countless times. Their new core of in the batting lineup and again. Those famous names are Vladimir Guerrero Junior boba shut Kevin Bijou Laura's Gurriel and so on and so on and I think with those players they're they still have quite a lot of developing to do at the major league level We know we know Vlad's slump or I should say you know his underperformance in his first few months of the season and we know how much he's picked it up since the all-star break which is obviously a great sign boba sheds just been tearing it up since he's been called up you know. He recently had to home. Runs off Clayton Kershaw. Which is good to see Kevin Bijou as well. He seems to be developing at a slower pace but he still has a lot of potential and and and like we said that lurks correal seems to be just a you know a new player after finding a comfortable position to play and with all of this happening and also the the other big factor would be When the start buying and I think that will determine when they were going to be competitive Ross Atkinson said countless times that once they are ready to spend money. Rodgers will provide it for them. I guess which I don't know how much anybody would believe just because of the reputation in the city but I guess it's something to look you know kind of be relieved about just because the curiosity and the speculation of Rogers would give the bluejays money to spend and I think that the Jays will maybe make some more. I think they'll with the winters continued to go on. I think they'll be more active in the free agent pool but I just think they're still gonna. There's going to be a couple years of them starting to contend before they're actually our. I should say buying before. They're actually gonNA start contending and I still think I like you said I don't know if I see them going anywhere in twenty twenty Like I said the five hundred like you said sorry. The five hundred seems to be inappropriate like an appropriate. I should say level expectations for them. Ross Atkins did say after the Trade. I think he compared the the Blue Jays rebuilt the two thousand fourteen. Houston Astros so I think you know looking back of that The Houston Astros weren't very good. That in two thousand fourteen but the next year I believe. They made a wildcard spot or they completely trended upward. So it's you know it's obviously hard to PR- It's hard to believe that's actually going to happen especially with him. But you can't blame him for being excited with all the talent the Blue Jays. How but they're definitely ways away I think twenty two twenty twenty one even seems to be a bit of stretch. You're definitely GONNA have to look within another like two three four years Max before they're gonNA start contending but the other big factor within this is all the prospects of bluejays have loaded up on and all the prospects they still have come in a big target or a big. You know the player in the spotlight. Now in the the Minor League system here Pearson. Who looks absolutely incredible and he was actually just recently promoted a AAA buffalo. He threw seven scoreless innings or through seven strong innings account. Remember at a phenomenal. I start so he sees definitely going to be coming up within the next year definitely unlikely he comes up this year but hopefully sometime next year and I think as he's Katina to come up you know they're still going to be trending upwards but we just don't know how long and with the rest of the depth bluejays have it all depends on how they turn out an example could be the marcus. Stroman trade with Anthony K and Simeon Woods. Richardson prospects like that. Where you don't know if this is really gonNA work out until you know five years down the road and I think if you know there's obviously going to be a lot of prospects that hit with the Blue Jays and there's going to be a ton that mess and I think it's a matter of time before we determined how they do and how they cruised. That'll have a big impact on where to go and the other good thing is the. Jays could have the pieces to buy with all the all the prospects they do have but it's a matter of time when when they decide to do it and when Rogers provides them the money which will be when the Blue Jays are ready to contend. But it's another two three four years Max down the road in my opinion. Hopefully were wrong hopefully next year. Hopefully they sprays all of us. I do want to mention you were talking about prospects and Nape Piercing Pearson. Just you know blowing everyone away in his first AAA game but I also want to mention TJ Zoellick because he threw a no hitter interpolate with the Buffalo Bisons. Um and that's just really something that you know. He was a first round pick by the Blue Jays a few years ago. I think it was twenty sixteen in the. We haven't heard a lot about him. You know we've been hearing about like you said a Pearson was drafted last year. We are at about Sean Reid Foley. We've heard about these other guys but we haven't heard a lot about TJ Zoellick but this is really used first moment in the sun. And I think it's a sign that you know he could be something big to Coming up in the minors such really exciting Speaking of people coming up in the minors we got another question about someone who just came up. Vodka Grow Junior. We got two questions kind of related. The first question was from tie he asked. Will Vladi have health issues his whole career and then the second question from Charles is will Vladi be a bust Those two questions lot implied in them I will say Ties question. I don't think that he has a lot of Health Issues Matthau. He has had obviously injury with his knee. But this year he's been largely. Ok Injury wise and I do see his injuries. Getting a little bit more serious. As time progresses just because of when you get older your more injuries. But I don't think I think the way that the Blue Jays have been stressing His you know the way he could get an injury the way that they've been stressing in trying to condition him Everywhere along the way you know single double triple A. Even the majors now. Everyone's so focused on that fact and keeping healthy that I trust staff to not make a mistake in that regard. I think he will be healthy for most of his career. I think he couldn't count her troubles leader in his career. Just because of the way he's built But the second question will be a bust. The question pie implies that he's already been a bus so far and I think that he hasn't he. He has an exceeded expectations because autumn. When we were talking about him coming up we were talking about. You know he's going to be a hall of Famer. He's even better than his father. And you know. He hasn't been that good but I'd say he's met expectations in ninety six games. He has a two eighty two batting average. Three fifty six on base percentage and fifteen home runs fifty five. I think he's making it clear case to be Al Rookie of the year. And that's the entire season those stats. That doesn't include his recent uptick in the last few months after a few starting slow months. So no I don't think he's going to be bust. I don't think he is a bust this season and I think you know he'll stay healthy for years to come. Yeah no grow. Junior will not be a bust. That's ridiculous question. In my opinion all due respect to ever asked it. He's not a bus now. He's played ninety six career games. First of all I know it's it. Seems like he's been up for a while but he hasn't even played a full season with the Blue Jays. And you know yes. It's okay to be disappointed. I guess a lot of people were a little letdown of how he first performed once he was. I called up and I think you know after the All star break He's been on fire and like you said his numbers are up and for the rest of the season. He's projected it in his last twenty games. major league. Baseball's protect projecting him to head just below three hundred and with an opium of eight seventy one with final enough. Sorry five more home runs and seventy more every is and you know gene's got a long way to go before you even consider him being a bus. He's got to be really really bad throughout those years. He hasn't even finished a full season yet. And I think it's completely ridiculous. Even think of him as a bust sure he's underperformed but again these prospects as much as they're not..
