McClanahan becomes 1st 8-game winner, Rays rebound from 19-run loss to beat Blue Jays 7-3

"Shane mcclanahan became the first pitcher in baseball to reach the 8 win mark as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7 to three. Mcclanahan allowed just a single run in 7 innings of work to improve to 8 zero on the year. My only motive, I think anybody in here can attest that is did we win? As long as I help this team and put them in a good situation to win that's really truthfully all I care about, everything else will take care of itself. Country Star's Pregnant Sister Forced to Clean Up Popcorn on Flight

"Jump in here. The first one is, is the story that is developing developed early in the week, Jesse James decker, who is a country music star, fan, her sister in law's married to a Major League Baseball player. She's undoubtedly flying. United Airlines, she has two small children. She's pregnant. And united stewardesses and sewers on Dali gave her some popcorn for the kids to eat. I guess to keep them, you know, as you would, you know, try to keep them past 5. Anyway, as young kids will do, the child, you know, through the popcorn or drop the popcorn, however you want to say it. And this is the part that I don't understand from this. And maybe James, you can help me understand. The story goes that Anthony bass is the pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays. And this is who it happened to. But it's also Jesse James decker's sister in law. And so anyway, they make her come back in the story goes. Is it the flight attendant came back and gave her some wipes and said, you have to clean this up per the captain? Right. So I read that to you where they gave her that trash bags or something. Whatever they gave her, yeah, to clean it up. But they blamed it on the captain. Yeah. She tried to pass it off on the cabin. Have you ever heard of a captain who gave one, you know, would have actually known unless it was somebody fighting in the back about somebody spilling something. I mean, I've been on planes before and people spill stuff all the time. I had so many scream on a plane, bloody murder in the captain didn't move. I don't think he cares about spilled popcorn. Listen, I have, all right, tell me how you feel. Tell me how you feel about this because I'm a little confused for a couple of reasons. First, I don't want to make it like the stewardess job is to clean up, but it kind of is. Right? Yeah. And this woman, it also depends on how the woman the mom treated the staff. Because if she was awful to them the whole trip, then I could see the maybe being a little bit iffy about it. But you gave a woman with who's pregnant with two kids popcorn. What did you think was going to happen?

Flaherty pitches 5 hitless innings, Cardinals beat Jays 4-1

"Jack flirty tossed 5 scoreless innings to help the Saint Louis Cardinals beat the Toronto Blue Jays four to one on Saturday. Flirty did not allow a hit, but surrendered 7 walks and hit a batter. 7 walks is not pitching. It's not something that's not going to work over the long run of games. But was able to get away with it today. The pitch is when you need to, but that's one of the weirder lines of ever seeing Kevin gausman took the loss for the Blue Jays despite not allowing an earned run in 6 innings of work, Ryan helsley recorded the final 5 outs for his first save of the season. When the secondary transfer window opens in the mls in july of next year that's twenty twenty two inter miami fcc will announce the signing of cristiano rinaldo but messy and rinaldo miami. You know the it's been out there. Excuse me i did not say messy. Think about nobody both. It's time line here. His contract ends june thirtieth twenty twenty. Two he is worth right now on the transfer market forty nine and a half million dollars. This is a player that can still go anywhere in the world if he wants to. That's the take. Yeah i mean aging star finishing up in. Mls in a okay. Do i need to go back over. forty nine. And a half million dollars on the transfer market he'd been just an aging star. Who is trying to play his final couple of years in the. Mls like say wayne rooney while we're all aging andro a prime he hymie slayers. Yeah seven forty nine and a half million on the transfer market right now matt. There is still people that want him. That would pay for him. He is arguably the second best player in the world. See the first time he dropped the s. word he did so gratuitously. He's coming inhering to challenge. I've told them anytime system because they're not looking at the take right. You're just looking at his age and going on aging veteran mammal. That's no he's still like teams won him teams in europe. Want him would love to have him. Does the team in miami want him. Yes one hundred percent. They did the whitecaps for they don't have to. I'm just glad he's not triggered. They don't have to bid that's the beauty. Cristiano ronaldo can let the contract expire. And then they can pick them up on a free loan or not free loan but free. Transfer kurtz noggin. He's a little. He's a little higher up. The queue of aging star comes over to mls but particularly without market who has been linked to all the big soccer stars because beckham's ownership honestly. It's so far out Down the line now. There are myriad problems with the take a hold on hold on how far out. It's one year from now so much could happen in iran this. I'm not getting graded. I'm going luke just absolutely crab crap. Oh hot hot hot hot. The inbox will need the first texter to break the tie at seven. Seven eight four zero.

"But i think it'll be a you know a significantly watered down version of what we've all come to know and love but i'm really really really hoping by two thousand twenty two. It's back to the way it's always been so we all do a tour. You've noticed ams have something to play for. They've taken a a step forward this year with some of the young players and particularly on the pitching side. Yeah it's funny. What the blue jays are are kind of looking ahead not behind right. But they're but if they look behind the first thing i see the mariners so this is a huge series for seattle bluejays. Take two out of three I think the mariners are a little bit of trouble. But if the mariners take two or three or sweet. They're you know they're helping themselves and damage that they're trying to catch. So you know i know. The trade deadline was a little bit bumpy with the grave mundell and everybody wondering you know i. I don't know if that hurt the team but of a hangover after. And they went in a bit of a tailspin after that but they've won their last two toro's graded so there is some talent there. It's funny that bluejays have run differential. You guys had talked about this up. Run differential of like plus one twenty nine or something like that or the mariners like minus forty nine. And they're only like two and a half games apart the standing something like that. It's it's funny. The blue have been blowing people out and losing close game. Answer the hip that winning close game so that occasionally get blown out so You know at the end of the year. All that matters is the wins and losses. And i think bluejays are a better team Also know the mariners have been pitching really well lately at the blue jays. You're gonna see three guys this weekend so it will be a challenge for the blue jays to win the series. I know that They have to stop in washington before they get back home. So the trip goes Coast to coast here but we saw how well the blue jays played in those games in toronto for the first time in what was six hundred seventy days or whatever. The number was i like. Is that home-field bump real real and can they sustain it. I think it is real now you know. Is it nine into every home. Stand that kansas city cleveland or a couple of teams not playing great. But i think the. I think the players were so happy to be home that it that it did. Give them a bit of a bump. And i think there's a lot of stuff in and to buffalo to the absolute best that they courtesy should be commended for it but these are major league ballplayers trying to compete at the highest level against other major league teams and it was tough on them. You know they. Most of the time donated almost all the time..

"You guys are doing well. Sure are we'll get to what is typically a huge weekend here in a second but first and foremost talking of field of dreams today after the scene yesterday and dyers ville i will. What did you make of the game and the presentation I didn't get the all of it at game last night. That bluejays obviously so we had it on kind of a side monitor in the studio because it was starting earlier as we were Kind of get game mode ourselves but It looks beautiful like visually. It was studying. That's for sure and the players sure seem to Have a great time and all their quotes after made it sound like it was a fantastic experience and you know the game delivered to say the least what happened in the ninth inning chop it bottom so I thought it was very cool. I i was a part of a couple of those games back. When i was doing sunday night baseball. We have two one in williamsport Where the little league world series is played and we did one at a military base fort bragg in north carolina so I i know how much work goes into them. And i thought the The folks at fox did a great job and it sure looked great from what i can tell moving onto the blue jays. Dan assess what you saw there in los angeles in anaheim As they make their way up to seattle yet not great you know you would have loved to have seen them take three out of four. I think it was kinda almost predictable. You know coming off at first home stand and all the emotion taking three out of four from the red sox and springer home run to win it on sunday You almost thought. Wow maybe a little bit susceptible to elect down or a bit of a trap against the angels. They you know they didn't get swept. They split but I i think they could have done a little bit. Better burritos. just didn't have his best stuff. Obviously last night and vladimir guerrero xenophon for the first time all sees it really. We haven't seen this so They're not exactly clicking on all cylinders right now but they've got enough good hitters. The lineup still should be grid and really their starting rotation as a strength. I don't know how many people around you know. Data the us around fall saying oh bluejays brooks but You know burritos last night. Notwithstanding you've got him you've got ray you've got your. You've got manila and right got matched your fifth. That's that's a really good rotation the numbers bear it out over the last couple about so They're doing okay. They've they've got their work cut out for them still whether they are trying to catch boston or new york or oakland. They've got catch couple of teams to make the playoffs. So they're certainly time and they're in a decent spot in the standings but they're going to have to keep playing while they're going to do it dan. I know he's not going this weekend. But you just mentioned alec manila. We'd like to claim one of our own and anybody that comes through. We do that Here in vancouver. But what has he meant to to that blue jay staff and certainly this is a guy i mean the stage just does not look too big for him not at all and and we saw that in triple eight this year we certainly saw major league debut against the yankees and you know some guys come off his confident but you watch them or you talk to them and you go feels like a bit of an act..

"So i mean a lot of things related to the fan experience like you know. How do we have so. How do we actually accomplish some of the things. I was talking about differentiated experience And one that aling reason for people to come. I think like we've thought about like especially in in the last few years when the team wasn't wing as much as it was in certainly fifteen and sixteen had like on. Our one of our jobs is to think about. How do we create an experience. That brings people to the ballpark outside of the winds in the losses. You know in so you know there were there. There's there's been a lot of things that we've been trying to test You know last in two thousand nineteen. We rolled out like a value menu called daddy out deals. It was like five dollar. Everything i don't know if you remember that including beer. We've been testing a lot of things. I think it was kind of more along the lines of that. Like how do we bring in more local food and beverage options that that's clearly something people want how we find a way to do that. How do we create more flexible. And and You know different ticket options ticket experiences. Some things that are bundled tickets that you know. It's it's not just a ticket. It might be like food or beverage or something you can brought it in that And then thinking about the building itself you know like there. There's there's some things in building that Are things that we've changed over time You know this the the offseason. So in twenty twenty we took out in the one hundred level If you recall in the outfield there's there used to be above the floors four or five or six rows of seats all along the outfield. Some of those were More open spaces or or some of the some of that capacity. Was you know. Different types of seating That allowed for different types of Of interactions you know socially like there's definitely definitely Some of those seeds. That are great seats in. You wouldn't change. You know more social spaces and more More differentiated seating options. I think would be would be one thing that i would add that. We've looked to try to do in smaller ways nice. I'm curious about this. Because i've had to stop myself as chatting. Is anyone at the bluejays. Call it the skydome. I mean probably not in. I so badly wanted to just call it that which is weird because i remember when when the the name i came up people go. What's the skydome then would have changed over to roger. I thought about it in at least when We were all working in roger center. Let's stop yourself attack. i was thinking. Yeah you we haven't been doing that in a while But when you're working in the building we never refer to it as you know you were just say here. Yeah no But hey i do know a lot of people that so called that. I think it's me bright because of you know of the nature of the fact that you know it was the contest and it wasn't a joel. It wasn't like a naming rights approach was a skydome. Like you know. So i think for many of those reasons i think that and the fact that it was a historic and iconic building at the time that that name in particular is one that people will will will not likely move on from his fast. Yeah that's so true knows another building that's like you know sponsored and what's next for a nook short term long term. Do you see yourself ever going to the other side and baseball ops. "Be in and i think you know Barks do a good job at incorporating history of the club And next to the city in in unique ways There's there's ballpark stat like do an incredible job at You know just just like patriot esque like you're sitting there like a tnt park is like that if you're sitting looking out into the bay You know in the outfield. It's it's just like an a that's one of my favorite ballparks for that reason is just pretty cool to be able to like look at in the ocean and then let down the field and and watch professional baseball in that. There's some i haven't been to you. Know i haven't been to all thirty. I'm very interested to see the one that just built in texas For the rangers globe life. But also like you know i think. Pnc park is incredible All park you know it's so simple. We get so many things right now along the different elements that i talked about. So there's a lot you know. But i think it's not that i would look at one in sale like that's that is the data a ballpark. It's more that. I appreciate the unique things that that different ballparks do. Well yeah some have certainly more things they do well than others but yeah i mean i think i think i think there's something special about each ballpark yet. That's for sure. You are there. Certain things i we had died. I wish we had that sort of pick and choose what you wanna bring it to toronto. Yeah for sure. I mean i think like you know. The rogers centre is great for many reasons location. Certainly is is one of them and the dome is one of the. We've touched on the thing with the thing that i would say that roger center i would add to you was designed in an era that airs. Maybe one other. You know glint ballpark. That was built as a multipurpose ballpark. And and so a lot of the things that you know. I talked about the taken different vantage points and especially more modern. Ballparks different types of seating options.

"Friendlier prices while was addressing one of the pain points that we had heard frequently from families around. You know it's It's not only expensive but also kind of a hassle to bring family to the ballpark at times especially when you have young kids and so we've tried to create those differentiated options. and In the end. Just that's that's i think one of them on that one of the approaches that has been central to to how we thought about what the fan experience is going from one thinking of it as one experienced thinking that as different people have different reasons for attending and coming with the family. You may want a different in Coming with clients one. Or if you're coming with friends and there's many other permutations of that but russell try to do is to think of it from the point of those fans may atta. We create ticket options. Food embarrassed options bomb. And think about the experience. Whether that's promotions your activation or anything else that you might come into contact with lean. How can that be differentiated. And on tailored to two different audience groups because be one personalized You know in a physical world in the way that you can you know digital environment but There's there's definitely things you can do. So we focused on on those things And just thought about like what what creates value for fans different fan groups and if we focus on providing those things and you know and hopefully will will justify whatever. The prices are whether those prices are on the premium or on more value end of the spectrum. Nice do you ever get.

"Sport that lends itself more to sharing those moments with people like the actual social interactions and multigenerational interactions. So we've done a lot of kids programming at games as part of the fan experience. You know junior jays on sundays is is one part of that but Over the last few years introduced More everyday kids Activation in programming And going back to your original comment around the fan fest. The last i mean obviously before This past off season. The last two off seasons will turn those events into what these game feld winner fast which was a Advantage was you know. I don't know if you've had a chance to go. But it turned turned from a season ticket. Member focus like. Hey here's to players and they'll talk about you know maybe comes out and talks about some insider info to something much bigger Usually go check out some of the pictures from that. Basically turned the rogers centre into like a winner for those two days. The entire field had everything from Rides to a ice surface A stage where. We had a constant programming on it. You know the entire roster Majorly an elite level prospects were here and like meeting opportunities for fans And it was much more kids centric. Were probably like i think both days we had like it was it was sold out. I don't recall the exact passive. I think it was somewhere North at ten thousand fans. I wanna say twelve thousand. And it was almost entirely. You still have the people in in the jackets. Sure he said for sure but You know there were far more young parents in attendance in data. Something that This year we did virtually It was it was very successful as well so Exactly something that we think about you know. I think we saw it in two thousand fifteen sixteen. I think There's something about rooting for the one team in the spore across the country and the raptors have one more recently than we did but i think we feel we feel that especially with Some of the issues that have been made bat that will be able to continue to grow. Grow the fan base in hopefully gross nice ticket ticket pricing I remember a number of years ago. I don't know if it's called. Surge pricing premium ticket pricing But the blue jays instituted that here in toronto How do you guys. I you know i can understand. You know when the socks come into town. The red sox When the yankees come into town You know that it makes sense there to have you know. Sort of premium pricing for for those games. How do you balance out. Ensuring from a business perspective that You're you're maximizing revenue opportunities versus Ensuring that the product can.

"And i remember working in enco check at one of these events and one of the things that really stuck out to me was the age of the attendees There was literally Grandmothers and grandfathers with jean jackets with pins from nine hundred seventy seven Like all over there all jacket and there weren't a lot of kids or youth there an wondering whether that's something that you look at Was i just my is sort of saying just a few hundred people in not looking at the bigger picture. But but i'm curious about how you think of especially with the success of the raptors Especially with the growth of basketball with canada or toronto being leafs nation. I how do how do how do the blue jays. How do you think about making baseball attractive to kids in the youth. Yeah i think it is something. We spent a lot of time. I think it's something that you know baseball as sport is has historically actually been really good at is it's you know it is one of the more popular No amateur youth sports. That kids participate in and You know for us. It absolutely is a priority for us to think about. How are we growing game. Because i think now even though were Toronto i think we also you ourselves being the only major league team in canada as stewards of the game in the actually spend a lot of time and energy on Efforts focused at growing and growing the game at the grassroots level so that there's a lot of amateur baseball programming that we put on from no bring the trainer like coaching camps to uber. Camps to You know were elite level prospect Getting exposure to canadian prospects to to kind of scouts. So that is something that is that is definitely top of mind for us. I think Going back to our rethinking about families. That's inside we thought a lot about in. I think baseball is conducive to right. Like you know. There's not a lot of families taking their kids. To raptors games you to demand in scarcity of the pricing of those tickets. You know for us. I think that's a natural advantage of baseball. Like not not just that it's more affordable but that It's a.

"So let's let's get to the other question. That i know a lot of blue jays fans are are you know. They're they're either on one or the other side of the debate whether or not or maybe there's more than two sides to this whole debate about what to do with the roger center Do you put grass in it. Or is it impossible for grass to grow on concrete Do you Beriot and either build a an outdoor grass turf stadium On top you know in that same location or daego somewhere else. Where where do we sit. What can you. what can you tell us. Yeah i mean. I think those all of those questions have been looked at You know ultimately. I think This has been have covered in commented on mike in terms of in terms of where we are on On any kind of redevelopment like there was there was some work being done on a diagnose options before the pandemic and frankly there hasn't been a lot of traction since Yeah i mean. I i think there is a there are a few different options at that. You could go all the way from a renovation within the current footprint to is something much larger is grasped in came grass. Ever an option in the ryder center. It would be tough. So there's there's a few things would need to happen. One is You know if we wanted to put into roger center today The the lower bowl is built like half of it is on a suspended slab right so like there's a parking lot below in. There's no irrigation so the roof has to close when it rains because there's no like rain drainage all it would flood so in order to progress in you'd need some candy or gatien drainage system which doesn't exist to you'd need to be able to have some amount of soil down there Both of which both of which are probably solvable but maybe not cost. Effectively and the second challenge is growing growing grass especially in the winter but overall within a structure so like without being able to get constant sunlight on on the grass. That is a challenge to though. I know that there was work down on that. You know investigating different options But but that's kind of.

"Health and safety of our player staff and fans has been at the forefront of all decisions. We've made So i think you know look in the. Us there's different Very different State and local regulations That vary pretty broad spectrum right. Yeah everything from in texas where the rangers announced. They're they're going to be at full capacity to on the low end. Like i think an percent or maybe even lower than that in some cases. And that's just from an nlp standpoint so the thing that's driving that is Is different public health. Authorities having different viewpoints on on on what is safe and effective in their in their various regions Though for us what we've been doing in spring training and while we're in florida as We do have some fans in attendance. were following pre rigorous health and safety protocol social distancing mask wearing And you know cleaning and sanitization measures. That are certainly manson grain our about fifteen percent of capacity at t ball park which during two thousand fans in that. That's you know that's basically what will be That might Evolve as as time goes. But you know. I think for us that that is kind of forefront is Doing things in a way. That's first and foremost safe for everyone ends player staff interesting i want. I don't know whether this falls into your purview. Because obviously the most people know that The toronto blue jays are owned By rogers The the rogers centre Is that a blue jays responsibilities at a writer's responsibility you're talking about. "Didn't have as much to compare notes on because like the nba double Everyone went to angers orlando. They weren't they didn't have that probably they weren't thinking about the canadian border or finding a home. Both of those two things were kind of south they were they were dealing with everything else obviously You know but we have shared melts along the way And and I mean they're obviously in a similar position now having played most of anga so Yeah i mean. I think we tried tried to help each other out where we can really curious. I know everything is sort of up in the air and has been for over a year. Now obviously one of the things with professional sports is It's it's live. There's there's a there's there's attendance there's people there obviously factors in to the business model How did you guys react and pivot knowing that okay. There's there's there's no come into gates for the air How how did you solve for that. Yeah i mean it's not a not really something you can sell for in terms of You know like replacing net revenue. That's just you know That's an industry issue now. It's not just baseball. Issue gets some industries have been more impacted than others right. travel Is a hard hit one in live. Entertainment for sure is Is another. I think We just kinda pivoted to especially for us not laying here in toronto in any Focusing among all of the other things on how do we maintain connection with our fans. How do we keep people now. Engaged in feeling connected to the team even though were playing fellow So that was that was kind of one of our biggest priorities is How do we. How do we keep those connection. I think that's true again. It's not like a a blue jays thing or a baseball thing Tried to figure out. Like how do you like. What is the virtual experience for you. Know our industry and for us for our fan base in So we spent. We spent a lot of time thinking about that. You guys are gonna be playing in florida recently The ufc announced an event in florida. Where they're going to have fans in attendance I think from what. I've read You know they're basically going to sell the place What's what's the position of the blue jays or major league baseball in terms of Fans in attendance. Yeah i think. I mean it's.

"Were you involved at that. That was those discussions and and how frustrating that must have been. Yeah i mean it was certainly like a unique set of circumstances that only we had to deal with in in baseball and at the time i think at the time at least it was We were the only sport really going through it. and Because the other ones were kind of in playoff bubbles in it was you didn't have to the teams didn't have to figure it out so for us. I mean it was. It was proven to be the model that makes sense for running a regular season. Like you couldn't put thirty teams into a bubble and like there's not enough Jonah any time to get the games in one place. Yeah oh yeah. I mean it was. It was crazy period. we We were kind of going through the different alternatives in Was it was any. In retrospect it was really cool. Experienced have gone through. It was stressful and frustrating But yes i think he was. It was it was just trying to control. You can control right. It's like what what are the set of options And then what are the things we can work on. But you know in the end it was Is is the local government in that area. Gonna be supportive. Is that facility going to have the right amount of space required to accommodate the That you know we're going to have to accommodate What does that mean logistically or travel or or anything else like a lot of different variables Obviously gonna win at that time. Like is this a covid. Hotspot is not you know. Those are all kind of factors That were considered as we as we looked at the different Leasing certainly like you know factoring in what What was important to to to the players as well in terms of their player facilities in amenities as well. Was there ever discussion that because you could play in toronto. That would the blue jays play at all during the season no. I don't think. I don't think that was ever an option or question..

Blue Jays face Rays as underdogs in wild card playoff series

"Playoffs start tomorrow maybe even today even yesterday as you're listening to this, we're going to go. I mean ordinarily take quite a bit of time and Karen previewing each series. But we don't have that kind of time because there are eight playoff series and they are best of three which is going to lend itself to all kinds of chaos and so we're GonNa go through each of these series intern. We're going to turn hit the high notes and then at the very end deliver, our world series picks So let's start with the top series in the American league the Tampa Bay rays versus the Toronto Slash Buffalo Bluejays. The first bullet point I have in my notes here is with because the Toronto Blue Jays with with Vladimir Guerrero junior and hundred. View. A Hundred Kirk. This is a wide team and I love and as much as as high as I am on the radio. I'm very excited. See the Blue Jays in the playoffs this help them or hurt them here I think dot you've seen all hundred kirk hit I. Think how can you? How can you say anything other than than the with helps them yeah. I like the idea that maybe Vlad as just gonNA break out suddenly in the playoffs because he's looked really good the last couple of weeks or so and it would. Be Wonderful if he just figured out how to hit the ball in the air and really had a great October and it'd be really fun if Nate Pearson came back from injury and turned into a bullpen weapon this month but I just personally don't see a great case for the Jays over the race I think they're both good teams. I. Think The an exciting team with a bright future but the race are really good and I think beyond review who is not even starting game one for the Jays I just don't have A. Lot of faith in most of that trump rotation or bullpen frankly and other than the game restarts it seems to me that Tampa Bay has the pitching edge both in the bullpen and the rotation and offensively maybe it's a wash, but it just seems to me that the the pitching edge is firmly in Tampa Bay side. So I think the Toronto Bullpen and this is going to be the kind of thing that gets said right before they give up nine runs in the seventh inning eight-game one I think it's better than baby. You think maybe they get given credit for I could see a path with this pitching because what they what they're going to try to do apparently is is bullpen game it with a match shoemaker taking up a little bit of load on the front of the maybe we get Pearson in the end of game one we haven't seen blake Snell pitched that deep in games in the postseason in the past, and then game too. I think you could make an argument that we use the best pitcher in the series. So if that happens. If. The blue, Jays do need to shoot the moon but I could see how they get it how they get it done with that said, this raise team just has so much depth in the lineup. There are good defensively they have so many pitchers not just the scary. Snell Morton tile glass now types just the I mean we saw this in the unfortunately in the for for me in the last weekend of the of the regular season where they shut down the phillies like even down to bespectacled Wade Miley who was lights out in the last game of the season yeah. The razor they've just got too much pitching I. Think as much as funny. It would be to see the the Blue Jays fight I think the the rates are going to take this one pretty handling.
