Taiwan Needs More Fighter Pilots

"Taiwan needs more top guns. The chance of conflict with China grows. You see, he's got, they got a lot of F-16s in Taiwan, and they got a lot of great jet pilots. They're not as good as ours. But they need more, which means we have to train more. 'cause you just don't walk, right? Walk right in, sit right down in a cockpit of an F-16 or an F-18 or whatever they're flying, I don't know. I'm not a pilot. I'm not a soldier. I'm not a sailor. I'm not a marine. I'm not a coast guardman. I ain't nothing, but I listen. It takes a long time. I've seen top guns, so I guess that makes me an expert. I've seen them both. And I got a fighter pilot in the family, but if Taiwan needs more fighter palettes, we should train them. Another

'Avatar: The Way of Water' Smashes Box Office Records

"Sunny bunch, how is avatar doing at the box office? You know, that's a tricky question to answer. So the short answer here is it's doing fine. I mean, if you want to look at how it is doing compared to other movies that have come out this year, just to pick one day at random, not really at random, it's most recent day. We have numbers. The last Wednesday that we had Wednesday, the Wednesday that just happened. It grows more on that Wednesday than any other film has made on a Wednesday in 2022. It made $20.4 million at the domestic box office. Which is very good for a Wednesday. Now look, this is a weird Wednesday, right? Because I was just about to ask, is that a data signifier or is there an empty set to compare it to? Yeah, I mean, so this whole stretch basically between the week before Christmas through the week before new year's day through the first couple of days after New Year's Day, it's a little bit of a weird stretch of time because it's like summer, right? It's like summer except in winter. You have families at home. You got a lot of people, you got people on vacation. So you've got kids home from school. So in theory, every day can be kind of like either a summer day or a weekend day. So it's a slightly weird Wednesday. That said it is still the biggest of the year. I mean, it's bigger than I think it might be. It's $6 million better than Top Gun mavericks first Wednesday. I mean, it's a big number regardless. It's a big number regardless.

The Big Movies of 2022

"Before we go though, I got a couple of things I want to hit with you and that is the big movies of 2022. And as we go forward of course, you couldn't get after many, many years of waiting Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the original Top Gun. Came out, came out wonderfully, came out beautifully. Just one that you would not want to get with that Avatar return here toward the end of the year. The rise of the movies on. Netflix on the other subscription services are now becoming more and more than what you see in the movie houses. But again, we're starting to get back out there, people are starting to go back and see the movies, they're starting to be more cognizant and aware, however you want to put it as we go and so it's exciting to see that out there, but just to remember since some of these the north and all quad on the western front, again, 13 lies. About the boys rescued from Thailand, these are the kind of movies that we're seeing come back in. And I hope that we've seen more and more of this coming in to the new year as we see our, it would be a shame to lose the ability to Elvis movie and instead of seeing them in the big screen and being able to say that you don't want to lose that.

Jim Hanson: Elon Musk Is Giving a Masterclass on Disruptive Change

"I want to talk about somebody who is doing positive disruption right now. I want to talk about my man Elon Musk. All right, and I'm not a fanboy in the pathetic or anything Elon does is brilliant and I thoughtfully will do whatever it is because you're not putting a chip in my head, brother, okay? That ain't happening. But the rest of the stuff he's been doing over the past couple of months has been a master class on disruptive change. There's a thing that in the military, fighter pilots called the ooda loop, observe orient decide act, and what it means is if you're doing the Top Gun thing and you're flying behind the guy and you can observe orient your plane, decide what to do and act faster than the other guy you can kill him. And Elon has been slaying people. He's been Snoopy killing the red dragon or the red baron. Bottom line, everything he's done that people have immediately gone, oh my God, Elon's gonna destroy Twitter. He bought it to destroy it because he's just a crazy billionaire. He's gonna fire everyone and there'll be no one left to Twitter to work. Well, guess what? Every time they say he's gonna destroy Twitter and he's gonna break it, what happens about a week later, everybody's going, wow. That went kind of well. Twitter, how many people did they need to go ahead and operate the bird app? Apparently not 7500 woke losers like they had. It seems like they may be needed a couple thousand. So the 5000 people that Elon chased out of that building, what were they doing? I think we all know what they were doing. They were shutting us down. And guess what? Good riddance to woke rubbish. They're gone. The bird app still works. They're making it better, right? Every day. He's coming out with new things that are going to happen. And every day, the usual suspects like, oh my God. They took the ban off, saying crazy things about COVID. Yeah, you know why? Because the government propaganda on COVID was the actual disinformation and all the people that the woke tools banned for telling the truth have now been proven right. So of course that ban is coming off on COVID misinformation because it's not coming from the Twitter users. People have a right to question authority

"top gun" Discussed on Awards Chatter

"Hi everyone and thank you for tuning in to the 465th episode of The Hollywood Reporter's awards chatter podcast. I'm the host Scott feinberg and my guest today is a producer of film and television who is one of the more fascinating and to some degree polarizing figures in Hollywood and has been for decades. The Guardian has written quote to those of tender sensibilities he is the devil incarnate, the man who helped destroy the movies and an architect of our cultural stupid, but to those who sit in Hollywood's counting houses, he's a man with his finger, plates at squarely on the movie going audiences, collective clitoris. He is money, close quote. Indeed, Playboy called him the most successful producer in history. Variety submitted that he is the only man in the business today to become famous strictly as a producer, and The New York Times said he could well be the most influential producer working today. And with credits including the following films to say nothing of his many hits on TV, it's hard to argue. Flashdance, Beverly Hills cop, Top Gun, bad boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk down, the Pirates of the Caribbean and national treasure franchises, and most recently, a sequel 36 years in the making. One of the first movies since the outbreak of COVID to bring people of all ages back to movie theaters in large numbers, Top Gun, maverick, which, 6 months after its release, is still playing in theaters, is 2022s highest grossing film by far with nearly $1.5 billion taken in at box offices around the world. Has received rave reviews. It's at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and might well Garner a first ever Oscar nomination in the category of best picture for my guest. Jerry Bruckheimer. Over the course of our conversation at his Santa Monica office, the 79 year old and I discussed how advertising led him to producing. His roller coaster partnership from 1982 through 1995 on high concept films with the late Don Simpson a pair of The New York Times called the top producers of the 1980s and the Los Angeles Times described as the kings of commercial cinema, making movies in which style was substance and audiences left the theater buzzing from adrenaline rushes. What led him to bet when others wouldn't on directors like Paul Schrader, Michael Mann and Michael Bay, and on stars, including Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage, and Tom Cruise, plus much more. And so without further ado, let's go to that conversation.

"I'm sure he couldn't keep that stuff inside too. He knows the shit. Yeah. And he wants you to know and he knows his shit. It was pretty good. So that probably was probably fun to watch that with him and just Disneyland for him. Yeah. For some reason, Top Gun and then somehow we went and saw the hunt for red October together. So any submarine type movie or anything like and pilot films were all about. That's kind of our deal. So he's probably a big Tom Clancy guy. I'm guessing. I guess. He hasn't read the books. I think he's read hunt for it October. Yeah. But that's why he picked me up from the centers. He was like, we're going to go see this film. And I was too young to see it. We're really care at the time. Yeah. But it's seared in my head and I'll be on my ROI. That had to come back from a trip and he was like, I want to go see this movie. You're going to go see it with me. All right, cool. So what would you give Top Gun: Maverick? Oh, man, honestly, again, I really, really liked it. I want to give it an 8. Oh, wow. I thought it was really good. I was not expecting it at all, but I really enjoyed it. I don't know if it's a nostalgia bump there, or maybe even part of 8 5. I don't know. What would you give the first one? The first one, man. Nope, I'd give this one an 8, I'd give the first one an 8 5. I think the first one's still better. I think this is a very worthy sequel. And I agree. Definitely worth the watch. Yeah, I'm very pleasantly surprised. It was as good as it was. Same. I did not expect it at all with all these shitty sequels that come out that are just cash grabs and everything. I really enjoyed this. I would go see it again in theaters. It's good shit. "And then once he runs out of fuel, he's going to land on the planet. He's got to get back to the base. Han Solo is crashed too. Now they've got to find their way back together. It's like this movie's been going on for a while. Yeah, so my dad is retired now, but was a pilot. And so Top Gun, we had a lot of movies in the house, but they were taped directly from HBO back, you know, back in the day, dad would pop it on and whenever we had HBO, I don't remember having it, but he would record what he wanted to record, but Top Gun. That we had bought on VHS. We had the box and everything. Yeah. And I remember watching it with dad, and then the sex scene would come on. Which doesn't show a goddamn thing. A lot of tongue in that, but just too much sex in that song. And so he would either stop it or fast forward and be like, well, we can't watch. I got my eyes covered. And then, yeah. Well, it was a time back in our first House we lived in when dad was on a trip flying. And I was asking to watch Top Gun, and he was like, okay, well, you know, my mom was talking to her and he was like, yeah, he can watch it, but there's a steamy scene in there. So once that happens, you need to go get mom and then tell her to fast forward for you. I'm like, all right, sure. Nope, guys, I know all about the remote. I know how fast forward and rewind work. So I a 100% saf there and watched it. And I was like, and then I rewind rewound it. And then I was like, hey mom, can you come fast forward it? I'm scared. Oh my God. So went ahead and did that. And then I'm pretty sure I backed it back up and watched it one more time and then just kept it rolling. Yeah. But yeah, so my dad was a pilot. We definitely watched this several times. I'm sure he always wanted to be an astronaut or maybe a fighter pilot or something like he always revered some of those guys too. So we watched this several times when I was a kid. And I always loved it and enjoyed it. It's been years since I've seen it.

"Lovely, lovely woman, but I don't know if it's Botox or whatever, but every time I'm just like, I've seen this welcome back to theaters from the pandemic every time. And then I turn around and her ex-husband, Tom Cruise at the beginning of this film is like, welcome back. Really tried to wait and hold on and we did everything we could to make sure that this was a theater experience there are real pilots doing pulling real gs and real everything is authentic as we could possibly can and real F 18s doing shit on my all right, sweet. So he's like hyping you up before you even see opening credits. Yeah. Which is great. Yeah. Quick synopsis basically this sequel takes place. Top Gun? Maverick. Yes. Roughly 30 years after the original film in 1986. And now finds Tom Cruise playing Pete, Mitchell, also known as maverick. His call sign as a test pilot for the navy. He's now flying. He's doing the Chucky Edgar. He's flying like the cutting edge. Mark ten super planes. Living on the edge, just like he did back then. We learned that that's cost and promotions his attitudes cost him his career basically. He's still a captain. When they say he should be an admiral, he should be a higher ranking. And so basically, he's not married. He doesn't have any kids. His personal life is kind of in a state of stasis development. And that kind of gets that world kind of gets shaken up when goose's son played by Miles Teller. Code name rooster code name rooster. Shows up to basically for a top secret mission. Again, they're trying to destroy an enemy base. Ambiguous enemy. Yes. Who's never named? They have said people have speculated since then based on the terrain and everything that's Iran. But that's never said. And remote enemy fortress between two mountains, two steep mountain faces. Almost kind of Star Wars like, you know, blowing up the death star. They have to sneak in between. It's not about that. Yeah. They have to sneak between these two very obscure spots and bomb a target specifically. It's only a thousand to one, 10,000 to one shot. And it's basically maverick facing down deuce's death. And because his relationship with rooster is strained because of death. And him needing an old flame, played by Jennifer Connelly, who also dates back to that time period. She's referenced briefly and Top Gun as an admiral's daughter that he abandoned. And so it's basically him confronting and making right the stuff what he perceives as his sins of his past. He's never quite gotten over. Deuces death and his involvement in that situation. But also him kind of making his final piece with iceman, played by Val Kilmer in a brief cameo appearance. So a lot of this movie is maverick kind of settling up his past. But while also going back, it's the proverbial one last mission. And a lot of fan service. The whole time. But well done. And also introducing the new generation of pilots who will fly with him, me and my wingman anytime. The new squad is saved by the bell, the new class. Yeah. Work surprisingly well. They shift the focus from the first.

Byron York: Presidential Job Approval Is a Good Indicator on Midterms

"Back. Byron York was on Fox News talking about Biden's epically horrible job approval numbers. And what that means for the midterm election. Now, this is conventional political wisdom, but I want to share with you anyway. I think presidential job approval is one of the main indicators. Predictors of how his party will do in midterm elections. And first of all, president first term presidents usually lose seats in the House in their first midterms. They just almost always do. We've had a couple of exceptions. One was in 2002 when the country was at wartime after September 11th with George W. Bush and Bush actually picked up some seats. The other was just four years earlier in 1998 during the Lewinsky scandal in which Republicans were impeaching president Bill Clinton and the public did not like that. Clinton had a very high approval rating and his party actually picked up seats. Every other time in decades and decades, the president's party loses seats and especially when the president's job approval is low, below 50%. Joe Biden is about 41, 42% right now. That's a little better than it was a couple of month or two ago when it got down to 37 or so. But still, that is really the range of job approval that leads to a big loss midterm election. And now, Byron, York is one of the best in the business. So he suggests it's as bad as it could get for Democrats.

John Solomon: Biden Gave Permission to Weaponize Against Trump

"Listen to John Solomon, founder of just the news on Sean Hannity's show last night on Fox News channel. Yeah, I know he did they knew. They were pushing the investigation. They gave the permission to the national archives to send the original boxes of documents that Donald Trump had sent back to the archives to the FBI. That launches the criminal investigation. They then give the archives the permission, Joe Biden's blessing to waive the president's best legal defense by saying you can't claim executive privileges over this. The current president will not allow it to happen. All that occurs long before a grand jury drops a subpoena on president Trump's lawyers in May and June and long before the raid, the Biden White House is at the ignition point of this investigation. And it's ironic because if you remember back in 2019 in 2020, it was the Biden Democrats that were complaining about efforts to start an investigation of Hunter Biden. Now they're caught doing the same thing, trying to push an investigation of their political rival, the opposition leader of the party, likely to face him in 2024. Now, John Solomon frames this perfectly. The president of the United States has engaged in an effort to stop his political opposition by weaponizing the Justice Department.

Ron DeSantis Debuts ‘Top Gun’-Style Ad With Himself as Maverick

"It sounds great too. It sounds just as good on the radio, but you might want to check it out as well, so you can see governor desantis in his flight suit. He is all decked out just like maverick from Top Gun Top Gun, only this is top gov. Good morning ladies and gentlemen. This is your governor speaking. Today's training evolution, dog fighting, taking on the corporate media. The rules of engagement are as follows. Number one, don't fire unless fired upon, but when they fire, you fire back with overwhelming force. Does it say that in the Bill? I'm asking. I'm asking you to tell me what's in the Bill. Number two, never, ever. Back down from a fight. If I could complete the question though. So you're going to give a speech or ask a question. Number three, don't accept their narrative. Strong, it's a fake narrative. I just disabused you of the narrative and you don't care about the facts. It's why people don't trust people like you because you peddle false narrative. All right, ladies and gentlemen. I mean, it is such a cool ad. If you want to see the ad and again, he's got his kid, it's so it's cute and it's playful and it's powerful. And frankly, I think it's a signal that Ron DeSantis is ready to run. Nationally,

"And that was 5 years ago. So that was the beginning of this kind of epic journey to making this movie. Is that a common experience for pitching yourself for a film and also are you trained in the art of pitching your take on a movie and that specific way? It's a very important part of the job that you learn and I learned when I first moved to Los Angeles in 2005. I feel very lucky because I started in the world of commercials. I came out to shoot music videos, but that industry had kind of died off at that point. So commercials was the way into making films and I spent the first 15 months here in Los Angeles. Pitching on commercials, I probably pitched on 25 commercials and got none of them. Lost everyone. And it was an amazing learning experience to for me to understand that it's not just about having the vision and the idea. You have to learn how to sell your idea. That's almost more important. I feel like it's a skill that I don't know if it's taught in film school. I don't know if people realize that, but you have to be able to communicate what it is you're going for. So every film I've done, there is a moment like this, not quite with the stakes of Top Gun: Maverick, but even on Tron legacy, that one really started with me talking to Jeff Bridges and convincing him to be in that first teaser that we made for Comic-Con. That's where that whole project started. So every project starts with you either in a room full of studio executives or sitting across from a movie star, trying to convince them why they should put their trust in you for the next two years. So you mentioned that you're a fan of the original. The film your film, you know, it's very much true to the spirit and some of the tone of the original and it opens with this deep homage to the way the first film opens. But your style is very different from Tony Scott's style. And I like your movie better. Candidly. But I'm curious how much you felt like kind of a fealty to replicating a lot of what people are expecting when they think of Top Gun versus how do you put your own spin on it in your own vision of it. And also what a movie represents in 2022 versus 1986. Yeah, it was something certainly we talked a lot about, which is, you know, Tom and I agreed from the beginning. We didn't want to be the cover band version of Top Gun. At the same time, there's so much love for the first film. I wanted people to know from the opening frames that we love Top Gun as much as you do, and that this is a Top Gun movie. But we're telling a new story. So yes, those opening few minutes definitely, I love the idea of just bringing the audience, you know, wrapping our arms around them and saying, this is a Top Gun film, but I think shortly after that, as soon as maverick pulls into that hanger in China Lake, you realize that this movie is going in its own direction. So I think the first 20 minutes of the movie really are designed to tell you that we respect the past, but we're telling a new story. Aesthetically, yes, Tony Scott, I mean, I think he what he did for blockbuster filmmaking aesthetically is maybe not fully appreciated, you know, Jerry Bruckheimer hired him off the hunger..

"And I think we'll talk more specifics about what this movie allows him to do. And the thing about he's both, he's taking on the maverick character in the original Top Gun, but you still got to make room for actual maverick and this movie is about Tom Cruise and maverick. So there's some balance things that have to happen where Miles Teller doesn't get to do everything right from the start in the way that Tom Cruise did in the original Top Gun. But I thought he was pretty effective at the end. And I was like, oh, I would watch a movie with Miles Teller in this role. And with Glenn Powell as his I was about to say iceman, but I'm sorry, Glenn Paul's name is Hank man. So that works. I thought it worked too. We'll talk more about it next week. Last question for you, what's your call sign? I don't know what mine is, but yours is spreadsheet. No. No, mine is mine is lord if you have to ask. No bitch, can you have one syllable? I decides bob. Yeah, bob. If you're gonna be bob Pullman plays bob. You might as well be spreadsheet. Isn't goose one syllable? I guess who says, okay, so your lord, that doesn't just think of LORD right on the helmet. You're telling me that. That's cool, but hey, lord, it's confusing. You know, when you're yelling at a bunch of things all at once. Spreadsheet is not confusing. We know when we say spreadsheet, we're talking about you. The person. If mine spreadsheet years is homework. Okay, that's actually, that's fine. That's totally fair. Okay. Accepted. Thanks, Amanda. Bobby slugger, he says, is apparently. Invented by his sister, Bobby, that's really good. You're the coolest of the three of us. That is pretty good. I like slugger. Okay. All right. I'll take it. One of the reasons why we didn't want to spoil the movie on this podcast is because Bobby hasn't seen the movie, and I don't know anybody who's looking forward to this movie more than Bobby Wagner. So maybe we'll get Bobby's take when we come back on the show next week. Amanda, you and I will talk again soon. Thanks so much for chatting. Let's go to my conversation now with Joseph kosinski. What do U.S. news PC magazine and popular science have in common? They all ranked simply safe home security as the best home security of 2021. In fact, U.S. news just named simply safe the best home security of 2022 as well..

"Going to the draft House. That's amazing that we're seeing it solo. The same night at different places, okay? The thing about the draft House, the parking really stresses me out. It is stress. So I mean, I like the experience, but anyway, we can talk about that at different time. Could someone please buy the arc light? Thank you so much. Thank you, thank you. So the leading guy, I think, kind of like passed me by, but let me just say once again, I have huge supporter of Lady Gaga, all of her movie efforts. Also, historically, I'm a woman who loves an end credits theme song that just really defines moviegoing to me in a powerful way. We don't need to speak about some of the other people who have made great contributions right now. We'll get to it. So I'm looking forward to revisiting it. What about Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm? These are two very well-known figures that are inserted into the story. Jennifer Connelly is herself a callback because she plays penny Benjamin, who a character who is mentioned briefly in the original film, the daughter of an admiral, and she gets her day in the sun. What did you think of Connelly? I would like her wardrobe. I was like, oh, I'm aging, and this is where I'd like to go. This is my amazing fisherman sweaters. I mean, she's clearly doing sort of like the nautical San Diego naval theme. There's a sailing scene. She looks great. That's really the only time she gets to do anything, but whatever. Do you think that the film that sailing sequence without a co-pilot without any co captains? Because it looks like it's just the two of them on that boat. Yeah, they've been suspiciously silent about the sailing sequence. And it's like, we know a lot about Tom Cruise flying things and training other people to fly things. There's a great piece on the ringer by Jake green trifles about the Top Gun pilot school that Tom Cruise set up for all the young guns. And so we know a lot about that and we know nothing about hill. They filmed the sailing. And that just makes me think that they don't want us to know that there was like a whole crew off screen. Which is fine, like sailing. I don't know anything about sailing. I would love to be the type of person who knows what a jib is or whatever. I don't. I don't know how to do it. The lifestyle calls to me, the actual sailing seems like a lot of work, but it's a different skill set. Tom Cruise can't know.

"Perhaps there were some arrangements here as well. I'm actually not familiar with how involved the navy was in the making of Top Gun: Maverick. But I know that they were very involved in Top Gun and had script approval, and that was the only way that the Tony Scott and the original filmmakers could have access to the planes. And so, you know, it is this Reagan era esque jingoistic yay planes, but it's also really anonymous and absent of conflict, like they never, the MiGs are Russian planes, but they don't say Russia, they're in the Indian Ocean, but no adversary is named, there are no specifics, which is very creepy in its own way. But they're trying to avoid any sort of geopolitical comment. They pretty much do that again in this one. They said NATO at one point, right? The country of origin in which the mission takes place is not identified. And once again, the quote unquote villain is not identified. Right. For me, that worked. And maybe in a way that it didn't work in the original Top Gun. And maybe that's just a function of the time when the film is released. And you could certainly see a world in which Russia was the villain in this movie, just given the circumstances in Ukraine over the last few months. Right. But I felt relieved to not have a politicized Top Gun movie, honestly. Yeah, of course. Even though in some ways and especially given the drone aspects of this plot, which they go pretty lightly on as well. Again, they're just like not trying to touch anything, geopolitical with a thousand foot pole. But there is something sinister about the kind of anonymity of it or just like the words not even going to think about it. If you try to think about it, I am obviously choosing not to think about it because thought, as we learned, if you think up there, you die, Sean. And so thought and Top Gun don't go together. I honestly feel like we're being too intellectual already in this podcast. I don't feel like we're like 20 minutes in 30 minutes in. I want to let people know, I do have more heat to bring to this. I feel like if I'm letting you down right now, it's because I'm trying to be restrained. By not revealing details. Yeah, I'm trying not to spoil,.

I mean even even in the movie legend Not believable about the volleyball's seen did you like this. What is your thoughts on the volleyball. She i don't remember thi- Seen so i'm going to have boobs. I don't know we're all gonna leave is okay sorry. Obviously she's one. That passes the test. Joe let's put a bow on this real quick. There's a couple of things. I do wanna touch on before we end but yes go ahead. I will I'll come back. Okay are injured by like ten minutes. Got okay I feel like we. We glossed over meg ryan and she plays it. It's an interesting performance on this. Because i feel like she plays her character like she has head drama. And and i. I don't know it's an odd choice because i mean i get it that. She's you know she has like a southern accent all that maybe she's like oh yes. Southern people are down. So i'm gonna play her kind of ditzy and um what's your first role. This was her first movie role. She'd been on tv and stuff but between her and and kelly mcgillis being you know the quote unquote older woman. I mean they're both kind of i. I use the word frumpy. But i mean they're just they're not oversexed and they're not even even their wardrobes. They're not they're not played for For the the skin. And when you compare that juxtaposed against all the guys that are basically walking around in their underwear and sweaty and everything else I feel like that was done for for the ladies as well where it's like. Look these look like normal everyday women not you know. They're not aerobics instructors. And they're not You know walking around in bikinis and and they're not doing eichel bay What's her name from the transformers. Movie mega megan fox fox. They're not doing poses like her. With like leaning over an engine with our acids a year. Like it it's a it's a. It's a big contrast between light. Hey look how sexy all these young twenty four year. Old dudes are oh and then. Here's meg ryan acting like she got hit in the head with a hammer In it's an interesting choice that she picked for that you are what's also kind of interesting about like when they introduce her into the film. When when maverick and goose are sitting in that in in the Any ex- waiting area Did you did anybody catch what that airplane that goose is holding star. Screen star scream. I noticed that i was just going to bring that up that neat little easter first transformers movie ever.

"He's the guy that's doing everything right and playing by the rules and and you know. He's he's the team. Guy and then maverick is the officer. That and there's naturally going to be a clash. But even even when i was a kid i never saw is made the bad guy. He was just the other guy. Good guy if you would be through his eyes then. It's a totally different mood. It's like there's this asshole and he keeps messing everything up. And you got like the karate kid. Johnny daniel you very much. It would've been a lot of parallels it would have been an inch or an interesting movie to see the movie from ice man being the lead character instead of maverick. This absolutely seeing it from ice maze perspective. That would be interesting. Yeah i would definitely watch that feeling better. That's a more interesting movie. I think pretty much makes maverick shit bag. Like i can see it now. They they call it. How i want top gun and how this one guy almost screwed it all up for me. He got his rio killed and He had an affair with the with the civilian contractor. This yeah it's it's yeah. He a totally different point of view. And it's like wait a minute. That would have been a better movie. Wonder society in america's failed is because of top gun for tom. Cruise all these years and he was a villain fucked up a lotta shit. Well it's funny. You mention karate kid. Because i feel like there's there's kind of a correlation with that too is like daniel of backed his way into the karate tournament and trickery to win and in you know wizardry and ending illegal kick to the face by the way so he was kind of maverick in kind of broke. The rules dipped his own. Thing and maverick wasn't the best. Cougar was so he gets into top gun on a technicality and he kinda backs his way in and almost wins it by breaking all the rule. Gene speaking of karate kid. Karate kid part. Two's not sure how much she dies. Watch clarence gilead junior. So sundown in that movie for brief scene when daniels and he's military.

"Well. I wonder it was it. Shot like this to get the same. Maybe the women in the audience interested. Oh i'd say i'd say sure. Yeah yeah definitely a way to get women to the theater to see the movie about fighter pilots. You know that's probably why did so well as instead of being like iron eagle. I'm sure the number for viewing weren't as good for that because the women were like as just an action flick. We're topgun would have been the same way. But then they're like yeah. Let's definitely draw. It's definitely draw. I don't know of any women that don't like this movie. A to be honest. I mean i may know a few that don't but i mean i can. I can probably call up every woman that i know and pull them. I'd be willing to bet. There's an eighty percent approval rate for this movie Based on that they were giving was that i was gonna say it'd be like the movie the wrestler to get men to go watch the wrestler. They had marisa. Tomei is a stripper. You know who who let man really cares about an aging wrestler unless it's like a real life. Wwf documentary which that movie is based loosely. On a jake the snake but yeah regarding yeah but who cares about change. The snake exactly. It's not your average got ronca piper but yeah it's i feel like that was their way of kind of balancing it with you. Know they're like oh. Will you know we've got all this testosterone going on. Let's let's have them get oiled up and flex mall playing volleyball on the beach and the girls love that Like there's there's definitely that same thing with the love scenes and everything else. None of the guys went to go. See top gun from the love If job ahead of ourselves but it's of interesting you mentioned the love scene here because there's what if you're not gonna tell us you went to see it too for the love cr annoyed okay. But the the original the original cut of this movie when they did it with test audiences. They said there wasn't enough romance between maverick charlie. So they went back. production had already wrapped. They went back months later in. They did the scene. With maverick and charlie in the elevator. That's why she's wearing a hat because her hair had already been cut and dyed is she looked nothing like she did for the movie. And if you notice mavericks hair's longer and she'd also lost weight yes and then when they did the the the sex scene that i guess tony scott literally only had about fifteen minutes to shoot that well only took in like a minute and a half. Well right what. Maybe two three minutes of footage but but they again. They had to go back in. Insert this into the film. Because i'd say insert something got inserted. Yeah well well enduring. That seem to kelly. Kelly's five ten and tom is listed at five seven. Tom cruise is not five foot. Seven donna brazile shorter than that. Every actor in hollywood. He mentions when he's going over What top guns for Aerial combat maneuvers dog-fighting. He says that was it. In korea that kill ratio is twelve. The one in vietnam dropped four to one. This is true. But i know early. Versions of the four which was prominent in vietnam. Didn't have a canon didn't have any guns so of course they had to be dependent on missiles that's all they had. Those are skewed numbers than so in the military fudge numbers. Oh no never. That's bad intelligence. Yeah why would they do that. Yeah never be careful. I might get nuked while. I feel like there was probably a lot more and i don't know that much about the korean war but i i know there wasn't a ton of of of aerial battles in vietnam as far as dog signings I mean i could be wrong about that. But i would assume that there would be more in korea With the plans that they had at the time in the traditional sense of dogfighting because the early sabres and whatnot. Didn't i don't believe that. Carry missiles carried rockets and guns they were gunning each other like were to style right. But with the advent of like the What is it. The phoenix and the Sidewinder going into vietnam. Everything be there was correct. Everything was dependent on missiles now later. Variants of the four did have a machine. Uss enterprise to be. But it's actually the us ranger visit ranger. Okay that's right 'cause the the ranger is now Shaving heads they got rid of for scrap. I believe didn't it anyways but also the ship they used for star trek for the voyage home. Okay so yeah. I that opening shot. Though of the fourteen launching off the doctors my jaw hit the ground in. I've been a fan ever since now like matt said seeing it now with different is yes. It's got some issues to it but Addi- rumors movie ever made any your. When the cartoon movie came out it was still worth back and they didn't kill optimus prime. It does have that going for it. So the the the image that you just mentioned in the The sunset in the that the silhouette and everything like the way a lot of this movie is shot is just absolutely beautiful It's very tony. Scott brought a lot of that commercial kind of mtv video quality With some of the imagery in this movie. And i mean love it or hate it. The some of the aerial photography in this movie. I feel like we'll never be matched just a in scope and scale because of the navy's involvement were allowed to use a lot of really quick. And that's that's one of the. I mean i love iron eagle I actually enjoy iron eagle more than top gun. But they were a little bit limited with what they could use because they had the israeli air force stuff and You know a lot of those shots get and they recycled shots top gun to if they recycle a ton of 'em an iron eagle where it's like. "I. I saw incentive theater. I saw it when it first came out on on vhs for rental and it was one of those that was perennially like sold out like it was always rented. And when i finally did get to see it i was. I was one of the kids that was like oh my god. This is amazing. This is like this is like watching. Gi joe movie but just the pilots So definitely appealed to me as a kid You know i've sense become a lot more critical of it but it At the time it was wi fi like it really tapped into that that jingoistic kind of american patriotism that we had in nineteen eighty five. Nineteen ninety six where it was know. We just one most of the olympics and We had the guy that was on the boat Dennis something and he won the cup and it was just that kind of you know the reagan era who you know everything and i feel i get it really hit at the right time for all that and It was definitely affected movie but it. It fell into that category of movie that whether i liked everything about at the time or not everybody else liked it so it was kinda like one of those things where i kind of had to fall in line and it was like. Oh yeah gun. Top guns awesome. Sure you know. But that's where as i got older. It's of like wait a minute like there's problems here. The at the time it was a humongous movie Like art said there was. I mean kids were pretending. Their bikes were f. Fourteens and The the high double high five and all that stuff including it and the need for speed and everything else. I remember kids wrecking on their bike and being like i'm in a flat and yeah so i saw it. You know i was there for. When it was available for rental. I should say oh man sorry. I was having some technical difficulties bouncing off. And on. But i was one of them. I remember my sister. Seven years older than i am so she was always more into like the the pretty boy movies so top gun was one that she's like huw our watches while i had seen iron eagle on video before we rented top done. So top gun to me was like okay because you had like like. I'm sorry i love kenny. Loggins music and stuff. But he's nothing compared to queen to me live watching top gun never. I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. And i'm still the same way when i watched it last night. In fact i started to fall asleep. And it's hard when you're a fat guy at a computer watching a movie. Start to those off. If i've seen it several times over the years but yeah my first experience was would have been probably early. Nineteen eighty seven when we re and it was at the time that we would actually rent a vcr because we didn't own one. We rented a vcr and pick out five movies and have the weekend for just movie time. So whenever came out on video. I i remember those days. The the rental. Vcr's were always like these big industrial like flip top ones too. I have one in my collection a cop loader anita replace vans but man. That thing is awesome. It's like thirty pounds but you could climb into it to fix it like an old car removed screws.
