Democracy As We Know It
"The life of maryland newkirk and on november six twenty twenty after a long battle with cancer. She was fifty six. She survived by her husband three siblings and three kids including her son van. Who's a senior editor at the atlantic. I'm a mom's oldest child. I am required under law to only speak good things when a life comes to an end we the ones who are left behind. We're left with a story a really a bunch of different stories like for van. There were small stories about the way. His mom looked really playing a tie or what she cared about. Walden your church. How she treated people who was an incredibly patient what she struggled with the stress rising off her but he but when van took a minute to pull back to really zoom out on the time line of his mom's life he could see this bigger story about the country. She lived in one of the things. I like to think about is the fact that when she was born it was by no means guaranteed that she would be granted the right to vote and that right to vote would be protected looking back on her life ban sees a story about democracy and it's different than the one he was taught so i was always taught that america was founded explicitly as democracy. You know you go to school. And you're taught that this was the biggest hit in global democracy since the athenians but really to me. I have been more and more convinced that the only true phase of what might even be somewhat called. Democracy in america has been america's voting writer and my mother has seen every single day van says contrary to what you might have been told real. Democracy in america hasn't been here that long. It's only been here for fifty six years this week. Van newkirk tells the short story of democracy by taking us through the life of the woman who saw the whole thing his mom. I'm julie longoria this experiment. A show about our unfinished country as van tells it his mom was born just one year before our democracy started a mother was born in sixty four. I understand that family. Storytelling often embellished. So you have to work a little bit too well. I've not yet gotten the fact checkers on some of this. But as the story goes a mother was born in greenwood mississippi. She went home in a cardboard box. That is the legend. I believe it's probably one of those. Cardboard bassin has which not that uncommon. But yeah you know they were poor and on the way home you know drove pass headquarters of civil rights organizations staging freedom summer but that's also will be known as the summer of civil rights because of the mississippi freedom summer project it was one of the main flashpoints in the civil rights movement and there were staging it out of headquarters in greenwood mississippi where she was born dan. He say what you want. I say i wanna reddish the vote. A lot of what they were trying to do was to register black people to vote to send into mississippi that stomach upwards of one thousand teachers ministers lawyers and students from all around the country and they did that in part by bringing lots and lots of volunteers. Lots and lots of white volunteers around the country to come down to mississippi. I hope we can reach the lives as many people as possible in idealistic the constitution the bill of rights. And i think it's important for everybody to have these every was met with incredible amounts of violence so about two three weeks after that. My house was five close. Been tony one of rise. Black little beaming. They should expect possibly somebody. She was born in the middle of all this. You know a time. When greenwood was a very contentious place to live for

I think I have a chance on I've seen at least his bare ass. I don't think I've seen the hog. I've seen a lot of change things between you two. Yes. Not in a bad way O, But what would it change? Well, I think any time you know, you know everything like I think that just adds another lady relationship. I don't know how it would change our day in and day out working relationship, But you can't you know, stare a man's hog in the eye and And not have a change your relationship? Yeah, it would just It would tweak things not make it better. You don't know It's just It's another layer. Yeah, but I didn't send it because my closet was a mess. And that was why I was like, If John Tweets us out, people are going to rag on me from a messy closet. That's so that's Well, I like your attire. I recognize that the intentions were probably much better than how I interpreted them them But at the moment I was even like what's so my my mom had surgery. What the final surgery and they opened up in this culture backup because it was everywhere. The cancer everywhere. There's nothing else they could do. So you just called her back up. And then they told us you just put make her comfortable and And I my head down after receiving that information in my my Nina my godmother Came up to me and she expected needs as my head and be a mess and I was just normal. It was a woman I said the eye and the she's an are you having lesbian tendencies. Turn look through her. I thought your I'm not sure it's always the first thing I pretended like I was buying from it for two seconds. I never even had like a real experience at the man so my I thought it was by because for some reason we all think that we're supposed to be refractory issued as you. And she just kind of we went on and then that word got out to all of the immediate people in our lives including My Mom's best friends and Who's also a landlord and I was also helping them on the side for extra money by helping them Organizing collective rent so kind of working office sometimes to and They encouraged me not to come out to her. Because many reasons and I didn't and I and I still am okay with that because she already knew that I was putting up all these walls and then I was alone because of all these walls and so she knew that I was going to be going through this experience of walking my life alone. Sure and She was very saddened by that and very concerned by that so I didn't. We all agree that I wouldn't tell her about it because it would be one more added stress. Sure that she need sure. It's going to be a short yardage Brown. The goal line trying to get one yard to yards. And all of a sudden Tony slip through Tony has quite an advantage over Derrick Henry, Tony one of the fastest at work. Seriously, had rare world class speed. I saw him race and people remember Doug Donnelly, white lightning. He challenged one time to forty before practice, and Tony just a Nyalali. Tony superstars remember, they used to have that on our competition come up with ABC. Got a so Joe Frazier drought swimming. But I remember that. But anyways, give for him to do this Derrick Henry ninety nine yards. That's a lot. But to maintain your balance because he's really close to the sideline and to edgy. Boy. You really never, and you know, this about their Henry, you gotta go low because if you go up high he's gonna step on you, go hitching your faith. You'll hit your chest. And he's gonna push you off and he kept going. So this was an unbelievable run. I got upset with the Jags. Because as you mentioned the kept him out of it. Whether it started with John Lewis because they're now let the on get I'm good because like. Go missing my average right now to like nineteen dollars of care. I don't wanna miss it. They got everything expected procurement from Santa Claus breaking. Yeah. They won the Super Bowl. I can't believe you guys. This was a number leave their you know in high school. He only had one game. And we were one hundred yards all rest of the game between two hundred and five hundred. Wow. So he gave like this before. But you until about man among boy, he was grew out of a exact same size and high school is changed. We're going to remember that one. It was it was cool to see what about this one though, the Raymond's defense they shut down Patrick Mahomes. Go here, we go shaking his head. Time for our final topic of the day. The chiefs host the ravens on Sunday. Kansas City leads the league at thirty seven points per game. All the ravens are giving up the fewest in the NFL ravens defensive coordinator. Wink, Martindale said yesterday that tyreek hill is the fastest human being. He has ever seen wear a helmet and added the chiefs offense can quote slaughter you, Shannon. Do you? Give Baltimore any shots. I think the week mart Markdale need to go into politics because he can tell them what his faith and not bad a nice. But I will agree. Tyreek hill is one of the fastest me and I've ever seen in but also skipping. Yeah. Can they win? Sure they can win. They can shorten the game got a great running attack. Lamar Jackson can run the football. The question is can they get to a high enough point total? Lamar Jackson has yet to throw for at least one hundred eighty are than a football game. So I believe Kim City Chiefs jump chiefs jump early and force them to play the game. They don't wanna play which is throw the football in order to play catch up can they win. Yes. I don't believe they will win win by at least fourteen points, and I got wink Martindale team. Okay. All of you do about day in Baltimore. I don't do this. I'm way out on the limb on this one way out there, but you sound so Baltimore is number one in the NFL in yards allowed and in points allowed, and they have just the kind of veteran nasty defense that can cause your guy your homeboy moms boy some problems, and I think they will cause them some problems..

"Man who convince voters to approve the project clinton cop what is he make of it well he actually he didn't do so much of the water he did the highspeed rail oh i cop is the other projects all right let's go to there's another big thing project that the governor's interested in not the water tunnel from mars but in fact a highspeed rail from venus clinton cop is the man who sold that project that's right so back in two thousand eight he helped convince voters to hand over nine going in bonds for highspeed rail here in california of with the promise of going from la to san francisco in just a little over two and a half hours well as time has gone on of course the price the costs have gone skyrocketing into the atmosphere and the train is become slower and bog down by politics and environmental regulations and you name it and now quentin cop the guy got start as saying wait a minute we've got to put an end to this this has become a nightmare it's going to cost more than we can never afford so he's helping to lead action the people are fighting strongest against i i like the idea that california's go to build the slowest bullet train on the planet i think that's worth one of the idea that you could get on a bullet trade for los angeles to san francisco the slower than an aircraft is an achievement i remember sacramental lawmaker tony one time that it would never work because nobody is going to let it go through their town unless it stops right right or drop off tax money and they're still building the first the first aspera right towards the president that still under construction out in the middle of nowhere going nowhere headed to the state prison all right we get we leave governor brown behind in his diplomatic words and we had to a real crisis the jeff's alerted me to.

"Hey thanks so much for joining me procession tony one of the therapy for black girls podcast so today i wanna talk with you all of valid how racism impacts are mental health you know given the recent events in charlottesville in gis again increasing racism and increasing white supremacy and the increasing violence that i feel like we're experiencing inches is feeling very tough and very heavy but i know many of us have been feeling like this for a very long time on i have to be honest with you it was very difficult for me to even feel very connected to anything really this weekend because it just feels like every time you turn around there something else happening so i i want to talk with with you a little bit about how this impacts are mental health and really give you all some tips that i'm also china practice myself to try to make sure that i can continue to show up for myself in my family in for you guys in ways that i hope um strengthens our communities in our families on me want to encourage you to do the same thing um so really when you think about just all of the things that we have to go through just being human right we did with losses in our lives in difficult relationships struggle that work in school in different areas and so is really hard to gyspy human sometimes but then when you add on top of it the ramp in racism um in hate that it's that exists gis because.

"There's nothing wrong with that but you know i want you for a if if if i'm a nick fan i want him focusing on basketball in the offseason because you know he can put up numbers you can really score there was obviously some stuff going on behind the scenes with the knicks that you know he wasn't happy about stuff is that what what what stuff when we talk about worn izak we talked about non deep as we talking about carmelo anthony and bill jackson are we talking about what are we talking about well i don't know i i i think the main thing was probably whether do you whether to play the triangle are not the play the tribals and i think that was probably the issue and it's obvious that either you playing the triangle or you're going to be outta town so the players gotta deal with that and there's nothing wrong with the triangle it's a glorified motion offense that's one championship so if you can play you can play in any offense and the triangle shoot suit guys that uh you know or fundamentally solid you know can make each other better can pass can cut can move um and can knock down shots crime those that do that i've i've had enough of complaining about the triangle because you know i looked at myself as a pretty good offense of play i could have played in any offense we could not run one play and out of figured out a way to your twenty points a game so it doesn't matter what offense you running go out there and play up go out there and do it go out there and play hard a figure out a way to win it needs probably confusing i i think that's something that posing gets you know he's got a ton of talent and is he going to be that hall of fame level talent or easy going to be you know the second option otherwise you're using forget act as anyone else in place for this franchise where you have the coach tony one thing the coach walks of the floor the president team comes into the gm imposed guys aside and such running his own practice that makes no sense at all hey.
