"It's so impressive and it's so great that he's going to pitch and Hit in that game, because you know to let the legend grows. It's unbelievable. The ball in the home run Derby contest is made by titlist that really Cary Middlecoff models. Yeah, they're talking five. You know, 500 ft home runs. It's gonna, Yeah. You're talking Tony Lema about that champion. Hey, Tony Champagne. See, Bruce was starting to think of like I told you this last night. Kind of scary. It is scary, but that's a tiny, Uh, now the Giants they didn't get another All Star. The only one who be playing is Crawford Posey is out. Gausman is going to pitch tomorrow. No, the square funny and I see the names of the players who are going and there's Buehler and Freddie Peralta ensures there and Taiwan Walker. But, boy, I think I actually think this will finally got overlooked. I really do. I would have him in that mix. Yeah, exactly. Especially because you know Guzman can't pitch and the Giants rotation is one of the big stories in either league the best It's a story, but people just aren't used to saying his name. I'm sure some of them can't even pronounce it yet and and, you know, it's not like well, sure is the reviewer of course, you know, but, uh, you know, for also is going to get his name in there. I mean, the funny definitely should be recognized. You know, we know that here and I'm sure he's he's happy to be. He's just happy to be a really solid starter again in his career, But, yeah, I agree he was He would look very in place in that game. Well, he's never won double digits. So he has a shot at doing that here. And you know, I know you said the Washington team. Bruce. They do they come at you, then they don't stop and they're really very tenacious. Team Giants are a little better. But boy, the Giants are going to be in that bullpen with Lester and the guy tomorrow. And the Giants. Just don't chase Bruce. They don't in the first inning. You can count on 30 pitches from the opposition in the first inning. Yeah, it's amazing. It's really, really impressive. You know that they They've got their approach and we've talked about this a lot. You know, at at times when they come up against a really good guy who's not going to go three and one on you, they'll They'll get a little more hurry up in there approach, but generally they're wearing guys out and it's It's very sound because there's so many teams when you're getting into their bullpen. Then you know the Dodgers among them. Um, despite what Kenley chances doing recently, you know if you've got a big chance of coming back to win or building on your lead once you get to that both ends for so many teams. Did you see the home run that Camarena hit the other night? Oh, my God. He's the relief pitcher for San Diego. They're losing 8 to 2 at that point, assures, Yeah. It's the fourth inning and the picture spot comes up. He's a reliever, Uh, Daniel Camarena, and he's from down there and they let him hit. And I understand why you talk about a bullpen. The Padres Bruce, They're starting pitcher doesn't give you five innings ever. So their bullpens getting killed, so they leave them in. And sure, as if those a pitch that I mean to a left handed hitter right down at the knees inside and the guy hit a slam. How about that? Yeah, I'm watching at home and mark my wife, Martha goes. That's that's the Vanessa pitcher. I go. Well, no, it isn't. You see that swing Nick. It looks like because I've never heard of the guy who has, you know, and then the out If you realize that was a relief pitcher, his family's going crazy. I'm telling you, San Diego's really You know, the Giants have something going. They really got something going in San Diego two, and when the Giants go down there, I'm not sure when they're next in San Diego. It's going to be different. It's not going to be a big Giants crowd. Because they they've got a team. They've got one of the most exciting teams of baseball. Just no question asked. I mean, easily one of the most entertaining and they're doing all these crazy things like coming back 80 against yours, er and yeah, it's fun. It's just delightful to have them in the mix. I love it. Giants play the Padres 10 times from the middle of September to the end of the season. There. There you go. That will be phenomenal. Perfect. Think the last three if I'm not mistaken or here, Uh, San Francisco. But I will say this about the Padres. Um and you brought this up about Bauer today. And Kershaw, Uh, you know, like Dodgers lacking some starting pitching the Padres don't you know if it's Darvish? He's got a bad back now Must Grove five innings and he's gone. Snell has got gastroenteritis. Um, panic is Paddock is, you know, back in the paddock again, and, uh and and Weathers, you know, they've They've overused them. They don't have starting pitching. It's unbelievable, but they need a picture. Or to that is that is, as they had in lined up so good and the at the start of the season, you know, they figured they wouldn't even Miss Clevinger, who's out for so long they're going to be. This is going to be one of the great rotations, and it hasn't worked out that way. And, of course, the Dodgers to their rotation is a bit in the tatters right now. Just in rotation wise, the Giants have a big edge this three team race. Well, you now right now. We'll say that right now. Well, I agree. And look, we've got a long 2.5 months coming up in Padres have the easiest schedule, Eno said it, you know, SARS said, and the Giants and Dodgers have a tougher schedule and we know that But when you look at the winds, you've got eight for Gausman nine for disco. Finding That's 17 would is what? Seven. I think that's 24 Cueto's about six That's 30 wins. Right now out of four guys in the rotation, and I think that is the story of the Giants. They're just never down 6 to 2 or 7 to 1. They're always in the game. And if you ask me, what's the story of the first half? I still say it's the rotation. Well, no doubt And if what we saw from Web is what we're going to get the rest of the season instead of it's sort of an off and on the arms, not quite sound and because his stuff for you know for all he's been through. He came out last night with phenomenal stuff. I mean, just all all world stuff. So that can't wait till his next start, because if that's if that's going to be what we get from him, that's the Giants are really going to be in good shape. Yeah, he hears the fifth starter, and, uh, we'll see where it ends up as bill pointed out, and, you know, you know, when you get a shoulder, it's different than than the forearm in the elbow and all that kind of stuff. You know, there's some muscles in there, you don't know. But The pitch he threw to Soto, he said, was the best pitch he's ever thrown in his life, and the picture was coming to into Soto, and they made a right turn. That for about two FT. Insane. It was It was unbelievable. I mean, it couldn't. It couldn't be. It couldn't be hit by anyone, especially because it looked like it was going to hit him. Maybe at the start, you know? Yeah, It's unbelievable. Yeah, that was something. Hey. The Cardinals were in town. And I just wanted to bring up our a nado. Versus this Hall of Famer Do you think are not a when it's all said and done 100% for me?.

Yeah, It's so funny story because you're right. Under Belichick. I don't think he ever had a celebration. No, he never He never had a thing like this. People partying people having a good time. That's the middle finger. But do you think? Yeah, I don't think That wasn't because Belichick said, No. You guys can't party. I think he was just so focused and strict and strong in his his regiment of this guy he don't even like No, it's like when you see pro golfers they golf after their round, and then they go to the range, So that's what he's like that you can still have fun. Who's the guy and he never did? No, no, he never did. And now football is fun for him. Yes, I checked. It was a job. It was expectation, and then L A check always kept Brady under the bus. Yes, they're areas. The coach of Tampa Bay goes. Go ahead. Don't you want to have a good time to get 21 21? Strong safety comes first. Always go to the range. But what was champagne? Tony Lema used to drink champagne after every round, Amen and win, But Uh, I didn't go to the right course Tournament, Not but Yeah, okay. We went to the driving range over to the Ala Wai. But I think it was good. It was good that he mostly because he always said he was gonna retire. He wanted he'll play till 45. He's got two more years left, so we'll see if he'd actually does that. Right. They even ask them. I think they said you're coming back. It's like, yeah, You know, I kind of thought that if the one that he would retire, but apparently not because years ago, he said, I'll play till 45 Play telling played all 45 if I can. Yes. No, no, don't you Here's a question. Okay. I think you should keep playing and maybe lose or go out retiring, winning. Come all the way the way played last Sunday. I don't know what ever losing your e was going to say he doesn't know what that word means too long and you do lose. Yeah, but I think I personally think you should go out now that he won Again, I think retire. Go out a winner. Oh, no, no, no, Not when I'm not. No, no. 43 Mahomes 25. "Maybe someday you're paying me back was a sound. What happened when Hendon Curie won the U. S open at Congressional in Washington, D. C. He was at the bottom of his life and his career and he wasn't even going to play in the tournament. The Tony Lima and Mike Sue Jack talked him into it. There's a Yugo. Out of place. You can't give up now, you know, And then he goes on and wins the tournament. And so Tony Lema did finally pay Mrs Mrs Van Terry back by talking her son in the playing in that tournament. I thought that a great story of pay back and all the things that happened at Harding and how it all panned out. Well, I never heard that story and remember him playing with I drawn a blank this plane partner. You know, the last day at the open, Great Religious Ray Floyd. Exactly. Thank you, Mitch. And you know awesome stuff there, Mitch. Good, good call on that one. Well, you know, just listening to you, John. And you know we could We could listen to Mr Fry. For hours. I mean, somebody's gotta Penhall this stuff down in a book. I mean, it's It's just incredible. The stories that you hear like you said, John, I hadn't heard this one. And you can you imagine how many more stories air out there? Oh, Eric, the characters the characters, he played his heart impart to wither in my day. You know, we had the so many good amateur golfers because remember Harding at six practice holes and golfer kick a lot. You got the bag of balls for free and hit practice all day long. They later made those six holes into the Fleming nine and made it a pay for play. But back in our day, there were six hold out there and there's so many great good amateur golfers. The competition was extremely during the high caliber. Yeah, and the and now for the for the championship, you know, there was always talk about Harding being too short to host a A major. You know, they put Ty's back into the golf course. Like Number five. That was, I don't know, like 3 80 when I was playing it over the years, it's now back almost 500 yards with a Really tight chute, which I think is really cool. On number eight. They had room to go back up into the trees and and and so you know, it's great that they had the even in a tight landscape. They have the property, too. You know, to be able to do that, and And then you know when they redid the main golf course at Harding, I was thought it was a great thing that they redid. Ah, the Fleming course with great quality of the greens and the bunkering and the T complexes and I know it's Ah, great place for Ah, you know, for seniors and new golfers to play, and I'm just hoping that after the driving range, and the TV compound has gone that You know that that golf course gets back to play here? You know, before too long, but, you know, great, great, great stuff there and great memories of you know Benny Yamani running the restaurant. And like you say, John all the characters. It's you know, the characters at Harding were just just awesome. You know, they showed on television on overhead shot of the golf course, is hard in San Francisco Club in the Olympic Club. Well, if you add up the number of holes because the Olympic club as two courses the ocean course from a lake, plus they not in the short course the iron course and then San Francisco and Harding Park as hardy, 18. Flemming Nice If you add it all up, there's 108 holes of golf within a mile of each other. Imagine them 108 holes of golf. Wow, That's that's awesome. Hey, John. Thank you so much for sometime this morning and thank you for your friendship over the years, which will certainly continue And best of luck to you and Carmen and ah I know you see Woody, right from time to time, Say, Lota, Woody and we'll we'll get together. We'll get together soon and ah, and best wishes to you and all your family. John, Let me say the same thing. John. I appreciate the friendship and your support over the years. If they do write that book about San Francisco Golf, there's gotta be a chapter in there for my friend John Fry. And I want to apologize for the old Tom Morris comment. I apologize for that. Obviously young Tom worse. That's what I meant. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. And congratulations to you on your many years of Oakton ball because you're a great addition to our golf community, And if they write, the book will have a chapter on hook down golf with two guys. Those two are you got even pay. OK, God bless God bless. All right, there's thank you. There's there's the John and Mitch show. They're very good and you have great like I say, John's been a great inspiration to me over the years and You know, I he gets tired of me telling the story. But I I got one of my first new sets of golf clubs from John when I was, you know, in junior high school, and you know, my mom would take us out there with a couple of my buddies from our golf team at Baptist Junior High School, and, you know, just just really cool stuff. So you know great great. Go ahead. No, I was just going to say, and I really miss their retail store that they had in South San Francisco. It was it was a fun place to hang out whether you bought something or not. Yeah, exactly right..

"And As I look at the results from the 1960 for lucky International Cici Rodriguez was the winner and I'm looking down the list here and unfortunately missing the cut. But a competitor that year was one John Fry on. I'm not sure what other years that he played. But ah, That that would lead him to great history of being the head got professional of Harding and one of our great friends, John. Thank you so much for joining us this morning and have a little time to visit and talk city golf. But here to be with you, John and yellowed image for me. Well Friday, years did so, Yeah, I'm doing. I couldn't be any better, but I want to clear it up. John said he didn't know how many other lucky's you played. And I've heard you once played with old Tom Morris. Is that about right? I'm old, But I'm not that old John, when we did our show from Harding for a couple of years or year and 1/2 and I was honored and surprised one morning when you showed up, and then you come out very regularly. And you'd have Ah. You have coffee with us and visit and we would tell stories and you'd help guidance in the right direction. If we're telling a story out of line, but the great stuff and it's it's got to be very melancholy for you. With your your family history and being out there in the seventies, the sixties and seventies of Harding playing there the city tournament and then all of a sudden You is a life member of the PGA to have the PGA Championship there. Your emotions must be running just in all sorts of directions. Well, it's a very happy time and in because the years I wasn't hardy several articles have been written in books lately. And the magazines about hard you park in the back the blast years when the course within this repair and that's when I was a pro there. Yeah, I was hard England. You know, you were almost ashamed. I remember I didn't invite anybody to come over and play with me some of my golf in Prince because the course was in such bad shape most of the time, But not all of the time. You know, during the San Francisco City, which was sponsored for many years by Rouge brothers and Roost, Atkins, the fellow named Bobby Ruse, You remember Bobby Ruse, a good player. And he won the tournament chairman and he would come out the crack of a whip and bring out some extra fertilizer and and some sand And they could make Harding Park look pretty dog on good and on weaker, too. Hey, John. I'm just wondering, you know, You've you've been a good golf professional You've played in big tournaments. You had the most wonderful retail store ever in South San Francisco, a story that I used to just go upto. Hang around and talk with you in a lot of the guys that work for you with such a family placed so my point is you You've seen a lot. Would you like a girl from word is and where it is today. Tell me what? What you see from where we were to where we got now. Well, you know, it's come a long way, You know, with all the trouble we're having in the world and the racial issues when I joined the PGA back in 1961 like first guardian after doing my apprenticeship in the first paragraph in the PG and membership application was Caucasian. In my day you had to be a Caucasian to be a member of the PGA. Thank God we've come a long way since then the PJ and the golf business and then Harding Park. We talk so much about it in those days back in the fifties and the sixties, the People of color didn't belong the country clubs. So Harding Park was their country Club Harding Park at some marvelous people who played there because they weren't allowed to be members. They weren't welcome members at clubs. Thank goodness we've come a long way since then. And John, you know, one of the great histories of the city City. Golf is the city golf championship, and you were there for both a number of them both as a competitors, and then it's the golf professional there. And you know, it was always famous for you know, a truck driver playing against the bank president or Ah, doctor playing against a roof for and and ah, my God, what You know it's and you literally could write a book and I suspected I mean, like you said, there's been so many articles written about it, but I know you go back with with Tony Lima and with Harvey Ward and Ah Ah ah, no share it share a couple of your your stories and memories of the city and I know you did a great job with part of the the high media's would You know, helping Tell the Tony Lema story who you grew up with, But Ah, let's first have you talk a little bit about the city and then let's have you reflect on Tony Lehman as well. Well, you know if I'm really from the East Bay, you know, lecture go golf course over Oakland. And so the prince is going to be prejudiced against you San Francisco guys Back in my day, The San Francisco golfers got all the publicity, but Tony Lehman, I grew up like Chabot. I remember that you have a team championships, where all the public ofcourse had team that played against each other. And I remember we played up in Sonoma and Tony and I were partners and we played against the two hotshots from Harding Park, and we beat him. And course, the famous stories of Tony Bean and coming from the other side of the tracks, so to speak. He was playing in the San Francisco City and his golf shoes. Soles were coming off your water on the go club and Cecil Venturi, who was can mentoring Mama and the Venturi have the pro shop and she got Tony with these shoes falling off and she said, Come on in the pro shop, Tony. And she put him into a new pair of golf shoes in Tony's I I can't afford to pay for those shoes, Miss Venturi, she said. That's OK, Tony..
