"Interacting with our next guest Tony grossi V. S. P. N. Klay that we talk about this at length yesterday I don't like the whole you didn't play the game card I I didn't like the rudeness that was demonstrated there I know Baker Mayfield the fiery guy but sometimes is a line you don't wanna cross Tony grossi joining us now talk about that and other things related to in five rounds it's not gonna be all about bigger may feel but Tony let me start right there let's say you were on the phone right now with Baker Mayfield instead of me what would you say to him how do I get you on the phone you have to direct your anger away from me and for your to your job yeah he he said Mikey plays better when he's angry but I think that that that that should be tunnel toward Sunday's not one days of practice wake it does seem to me like he has thrived off of external doubts external criticism he keeps a list of everybody who's ever distant and he uses that to fuel himself and that's fine but if it leads to moments like we saw on Wednesday it's not fine because an outsider's perspective you see and it's like what this guy's problem is that the I mean what what were you experiencing in your own brain as you're watching Baker Mayfield interact with you the way that he did well I thought I thought the you know the one on the line hello xcelerated is anger god he's picked not picked on me but I mean he's usually directed some of Starkey responses to me ever and I decided not to I just decided to challenge him on this particular point because I was I was trying to get to a you know bad execution in a two minute drive the end of the half acre got them right back in the game is in those other the games were the Browns are are are really failing at you know pressure situations that could change again and so when I challenged him he didn't like it and I I either had to say all right step back or try to find this answer and he didn't like it a year ago this week for any kitchens was the team's running backs coach minding his own business not on anyone short list to ever be a head coach in the NFL and then he became the in our offense of coordinator and then he became the head coach do you think in hindsight he was prepared and or is prepared for the job that he now has well it's hard to defend that it was the the the way things are going I DO dollar at the time Mike nobody ridiculed the pack among those questions well let's see how it goes and any any other such short sample sizes coordinator but clearly his relationship with with Baker and their results collectively over the eight games got on the job and then there was a leap of faith after that but to put to death the way they work together the way things seem to be going they didn't wanna lose Freddie and yet it didn't seem they could term up with it an experience head coach to keep the most coordinator so they decided to take the extra step is there anything to the criticism that came from former offense of line coach Bob Wiley before this season he was in a radio interview and he said that that basically was cans and PZ last year the quarterbacks coach that was the one responsible for the growth of Baker may feel that pretty kitchens it that much to do with it in the kitchen should I got the job and I know that wily you know obviously disgruntled because he didn't get retain but is there anything to that that the opinion that he shared several weeks back again it's almost hard it is difficult to say he was full of it right the way things are going right now but nobody at the time you gave them to use the much credit at least within the organization for the turnaround of Baker may feel last year and in the office you know Wiley and and can or or she Jackson loyalists and you've got bumped out of the job and and they weren't brought back now again it's it's hard to do that reading is kind of the whole Cleveland Browns offense it is kind of playing into that that whole idea that there's a missing there's a coach missing that connected it all together but I I I don't agree with them it it just doesn't explain why things are going so Hey wire now if we applied sodium Penna fall both to John Dorsey the GM of the Browns and receiver Odell Beckham junior would they both say that if they had to do it all over again with the trade that brought him to Cleveland they would I think I then Dorsey would I'm not sure about del yeah he he's been a a consummate team in it from everything I can tell it's just not going the way they thought he's the only wide receiver Mike with a receiving touchdown so far he is leading the team I think in receptions but all of those numbers are down everybody's numbers are down except in the shop but I think Dorsey would definitely do it again delen have a choice but he he's not kicking and screaming about the trade we know that they weren't shopping at the trade deadline have you caught wind of anyone calling the Browns in trying to maybe pry Odell Beckham junior away before that window closed on Tuesday now all right I am not I I don't think his name was bandied about much now the problem now I don't know but the problem but his relationship with Jarvis Landry is so strong and he does have a good relationship with del I I would think that trading del at the deadline would have would have been a very disruptive thing to do within the locker room I Terry R. last thirty seconds what would you say is the primary reason why this team is it two and five and not living up to the the expectations that were created last year the responsibility of the government because his wife they're not a team that you look at and say what I thought well coached team I mean then they lead the league in penalties I think they lead the league in turnovers I mean it's it's thirteen is infected with mistakes and that's really bad get out no coach wants.

"Hot take thank what you guys get to it agitation page give me your top four candies you know that we're gonna get the Golan thoughts on this over the course of the morning because frankly it's Halloween plus I I you know I'm not Bristol confirmed and I just I think if you're watching on ESPN this morning you may want to tune in because I think there's gonna be some pretty spectacular looking things happening that's all that's all that that that's that's all and you can let us know at least we all put to bring about a cubs together to top the list so we're all in agreement on that we can all have a big group hug about that group hugging is what we need and that by the way was straight talk straight talk wireless everything for less only at Walmart group hug I don't know if they can help a couple of the most the the angrier guys in the NFL right now and in the top of the list Baker Mayfield he had his media availability yesterday is being asked of the Browns lacked urgency in a position at the end of the first half during their loss to New England it was not a great moment for him as he had an interaction with the reporter that according to some he already has a bit of a contentious relationship with but it went a little off the rails at the end of the press conference of people are reacting to a check at the end of Baker may fields of media availability yesterday it was a lot going on there's a penalties or negative yardage will win the penalty happened and we're behind the chance not something but I just told you the clock was running and we had a penalty you want to give them the ball back now you don't play you don't know it was just plain and simple was unhappy with the drama we can score points to dumbest question you can ask Jesus turning obviously there's a contentious relationship there Tony grossi is reported that he was referring to who works for eight fifty W. K. and all radio and ESPN affiliate in Cleveland so you have to look at this a couple ways number one I'm not saying anything Baker Mayfield said was necessarily wrong and I understand that you get frustrated in those moments but unfortunately it's just part of what comes with the territory when your quarterback your ask dumb questions you know it the end of the day these guys are in there every single day and what they're trying to do is get a sense that and by these guys I mean the media they're trying to get a sense of the best stories that they can tell our radio or imprints about whatever the team is whoever the player is and give everybody the best sense of what they see now ultimately when you come in you say you didn't play that's a that's common answer you guys know that I'm gonna have a thought on anyone who comes in and says you have to play to to suddenly be able to talk about what you see in a football game you know obviously given my past and I'm not going to be somebody thinks you have to play to have an opinion and and that's that that take in and of itself is one that comes from frustration because realistically anytime you talk to anybody does that mean that you can't review a concert if you didn't tour with the band does that mean you can't review a movie if you've never made one I mean that's just not the way society works but there are certain groups of football players that one was signed and I understand that there is at least the concept of okay fine what do you what right do you have to ask me about a football game considering that you don't understand it the way I do because I played the game fine go to a concert with me and let's see how much differently you view that concert after I tell you every cheap that they're doing on stage but that's not the way the world works so ultimately you have to look at it whatever's gotten Baker Mayfield trigger to this point and and whether this is right or wrong the reality of the situation is Baker knows that the Michael from the mac the microscope there's the word is on him right now as he knows that the microscope is on him that means it sometimes you got to do the easiest thing the easiest thing in answering is to do the toughest thing at the moment which is just swallow your real thoughts and just give it out the way that make this go away he's a play incredibly well the way you make this go away is a look at the somewhat and he's come in and been very clear about answers when he doesn't like the questions in a deep way then nobody can dispute because it's real that if you play in the NFL you have a much better understanding of the exes and ohs and what makes the world work what makes them the drive work ultimately Baker Mayfield may have a better understandable but he has to have a better understanding of what it means to play quarterback in the NFL which means you're not just judge by the football you play you're judged by everything you say before during and after the game when there's a microphone in your face right or wrong that's a reality coming up next a New York stars not happy with the trade deadline the nationals a World Series champions will break all of it down next is first and last on ESPN radio I'm Jason fits.

J. that tandem and Baker Mayfield the next year savior he he had a hot start a deal to add on to the coach hordes talk about a couple times in meetings and so god kind of got Saddam he was talking about what would look like on paper and you know god heard that and. we like it sounds good but we'll see. and when John Harbaugh said back in March of the Browns of the best team in the division he knew what he was doing. he's contributing to the hype. go ahead everybody assumed the Browns are gonna be great assume that the steel is gonna be better just because they're upset. who cares about how good the players are they're upset. well the ratings go about their business it worked the Okey Doke worked it worked on me I think the Steelers to win a division of brown to make the playoffs the rain is going to run away with the division. they're gonna be three in one. the Browns gonna be one in three. the winner of the Bengals Steelers game on Monday night. my god. think about that in three verses in three on Monday Night Football in week four. and you know if either of those teams had given us any reason to think that they would potentially be competitive this year than you can sell it as a do or die bowl last chance bowl there been games like that in the past where it's basically a playoff elimination game in October. any working now. J. she said the store can get much better than that I don't I I mean I I call it I'm like I'm done that's it I throw the telling give up I ended my cards yes I know you love a good story this is really a good story this young man obviously was a very difficult situation and you you talk about things that happened where everybody can kind of rally around and this is one of those things he has a part return for touchdown this in this preseason game is battling to try to get on this team and anybody in life can be down at a certain point like I don't think anyone's immune to to having hardships potentially life and this is one of the great things about sports where it can be so up lifting where you see someone who has had challenges and who has had adversity at may overcome it and do something and realize their potential and I look you love a great story but you know what I love a great story to and this is a great story dreamers right those are those people out there in the world that want something so bad and they never give up no matter how many people in their corner and in their family and and people that love them don't want to see them just deal with disappointment when it doesn't happen another disappointment but this guy he pretty much stole the show in the preseason game without a eighty six yard punt return and the heat I think he talked his way any like pretended he knew someone in the front office to get himself there do you know anything more about that not just just the backstory from whatever it is he did everything he had to do or could do yes put himself in this position and and you know what that's what we when you are scrapping in to try to better yourself and better your situation you should try to do everything you can from a legal perspective obviously right now all to to give yourself an opportunity to to show people what you can do and that's what he did and then you know what he took the opportunity in excel with it he was sleeping outside of a gym in Miami and one of his buddies from a flag football league told him where are the Browns were gonna be practicing during the spring and he but he was invited and so I guess he he pretended that he knew Alonzo Highsmith and he went right up to many introduce himself and talked his way in it's just it's one of those stories where you you know people go around and they they talk to young people as it and they tell their stories of how hard it was for them to get to where they are or how poor they were before they they have this multimillion dollar company and it's just one of those stories that's not just fun to watch from the outside but also it kind of makes you feel like there's hope and young people can be inspired by his story as well we're gonna get a little more information not just about demon she he just sepi but also more about what's going on at Browns training camp Tony grossi brown's an NFL analyst for E. S. P. N. Cleveland dot com is joining game night with Jason reed and me CJ Silas on ESPN radio and it looks like we lost we'll get him back in just a minute he's not the only good story coming out of brown's camp though the fact that Baker Mayfield in now in his second year he's kind of the veteran he's got B. J. his first year they're not first year in the NFL the first year with Cleveland and I head coach Freddie kitchens they're trying to get that eleven fifty two and one record over the last four years they're trying to change that change quickly yeah in his the things easily the way they finished last year they finished so well so much optimism Ron Baker Mayfield and rightfully so this is a guy he is you you have a number one overall draft pick you you're expecting him to succeed and what he showed what he showed last year look if you started the whole year he prob they probably make the playoffs that's the reality of it so yeah I just think it's a it's a great opportunity in Cleveland for them to really put the past behind when you're the one who said he was going to win three super bowls right I said would not this year a second one when it's all said and done okay thank you three and this year will be the first to be a little bit later I get it okay Tony grossi brown's an NFL analyst for ESPN Cleveland dot com joining us now on game night with Jason reed and CJ Silas we're talking about the Browns and Jay said earlier said he thinks the Baker Mayfield that guy that over his career is going to win three Super Bowl some envy peas what does he look like to you you're there every day well he looks like he's ready to step into the a class of the league quarterbacks he doesn't even have you know sixteen games under his belt I think he only started thirteen last year but he he was precocious last year and and now this year you take a more of a moral leadership role more of a coach on the field type role telling Odell Beckham what to DO Tellem Jarvis Landry what to do and I just think he's gonna be you know we saw Patrick my homes in the second year his first full season as a starter I think I don't know if the numbers will be similar but I think data may field will be in that same type of conversation during the course of this year until you you meant you mentioned Jarvis Landry I was told about can junior and I'm not one of these types of guys and you what I've talked with pass so I I'm I'm not one of these types of guys who likes to go real big hyperbole saying all US guys would be great and obviously with what the Browns have had to deal with from a quarterback situation over the years Hey you know anything can happen but when I look at this guy when I look at what he did last year when I look at him in Oklahoma there are some guys who just have that IT factor and to me besides the the the ability has to read it the ability that he has to make all the throws I see the it factor here and that's why I said earlier on the show I'm not going to be the least bit surprised if this guy wins three Super Bowls before it's all said that you may not want to go there but am I crazy to think that this guy is a straight line to super stardom you know I don't think you're crazy at all I mean as you know it will take three to fit to be in that role not super stardom but he does we use for city Cleveland gonna go not several years I I I think I think they're definitely on the tap this team this nucleus of this team Baker at the helm we'll be in a Superbowl run in the next three years and after that who knows what happened but she you know the it factor you you definitely have a he also has the toughness to shoulder the expectations that are on the state and and will will be on the same for mac several years because this is not a Super Bowl or bust season this is the beginning here of of a run of fun and good seasons so even though Cleveland going Gaga over this team they have played a game yet I take a quarterback has to be the toughest find it player on the team when when you have those kind of expectation that and he definitely fits the bill brown said NFL analyst for ESPN Cleveland dot com Tony grossi joining game night with Jason reading me CJ Silas on ESPN radio all guests appearing via the shell penciller performance line Tony there's a lot of good stuff coming out of Cleveland chemically Baker Mayfield B. J. and some happy stories but right away one of the things that it doesn't look like Freddie kitchens has any patients for is wide receiver Antonio Callaway suspended without pay for the first four regular season games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy we thought that might be from an incident in two thousand eighteen but what was it really no I don't think it's related you know it was about a year ago and his first training camp were were Callaway was stopped by a policeman in Cleveland after hours or three o'clock in the morning and that it was a routine you know kind of traffic stop in and the pharmacist very small amount of marijuana in his car along with an expired license this is definitely not related to that that this was a a lot elation of the NFL substance abuse policy he was not there's a plan a year ago either by the legal by the Browns we thank you know they don't give you details on this but we think there was a failed test or or diluted Pastora missed out Callaway entered into the NFL it in stage one other substance abuse program because of this previous problems at Florida and also a failed or diluted tests at the combine so if he had that strike against them and you know that the only kind of changes that substance abuse policy every six months but from what I understand it the on this on this one he he had to fail violate the program and if it was something other than a year ago twenty I was watching TV this was a bit I don't know a few weeks ago and this clip comes on of miles Garrett and he's doing these boxes jumps with I I I think the one hundred pound weight now I stop what I was doing because he's he's doing the high box jobs which in and of itself is you know a man his size please hold like these hundred pound weight I think two hundred like to tell me when I look at this guy and what he's done to this point I really think that okay Erin Donald best defensive players F. L. I think this guy is going to be right there this year he's the best player on this team is yeah yeah I mean he was last year the second year player now they added first around him they added hello gave Vernon on the opposite side of the line which will only help when they changed defensive coordinators which I think will help them but in the off season most Gerrity who who you would never accuse of being out of shape last year he goes into MMA training and all these different kinds of training this.

"Hours on this Tuesday morning. Chris Simms is on vacation, which means we have loaded the cannon with a bunch of guests who will be visiting with me over the next. Couple of our Steve Spurrier the head coach of the Orlando Apollo's of the alliance of American football. It'll be joining us in about a half hour. They had a rollicking win forty two six in their week one game on Saturday night on CBS and then later in the program. Tony Dungy hall of fame. Head coach will be joining us for conversation. Avid talked to him since wanna talk to him about what what he autumn it takes away from some both Fifty-three. Plus, plus the decision of column to decide to play football over baseball. Tony Grossi the Browns on the cream hunt decision. He'll be joining us as well. And we're going to wrap things up with Vernon Davis. The washington. Tight end who we're talking a lot about rob gronkowski getting into acting Vernon Davis is and he's in a movie that's coming out later this year. We're going to talk to him about that. But collar Murray one of the big stories of the day yesterday. Couple of stories Kareem hunt column or we're gonna start with Colin Murray. Collar Murray is now fully committed to playing football. So he says for now. So someone says for now, and I'm going to be cynical. I liked column. I wish him the best. But I'm not doing my job. If I don't take a hard look at the things that are being said and done to try to get to the bottom of what's really happening. And I've been skeptical for awhile now that Murray is going to try to play both sides of this. He's going to try to keep a foot in each boat as he progresses through February March and April and makes a final decision about whether to play football after he sees who drafts him and how high he's drafted. But in order to get drafted as high as possible, you can't say that you have to go all in with football. The statement that was posted yesterday on his Twitter page. May or may not have been written by him. The as reportedly believe it was written by his new agent. Eric Burkhardt the statement reads as follows moving forward. I am firmly and fully committing my life and time to becoming an NFL quarterback. Football has been my love and passion my entire life. I was raised to play quarterback. And I very much look forward to dedicating one hundred percent of myself to being the best possible quarterback and winning NFL championships. Started an extensive training program to prepare myself for upcoming NFL workouts and interviews I eagerly await the opportunity to continue to prove to NFL decision makers that I am the franchise quarterback in this draft. Okay. Here's the thing. If he was raised to play quarterback football has been his love and passion is entire life. Why did he take money from the Oakland A's last year when they drafted and play you guys get drafted? They don't take the money from the team. Why did he do it? Why? That's the first question. I'm asking in Indianapolis in two weeks, the scouting combine these interviews for collar Murray, when you consider the circumstances when you consider the fact that he did take the money from the as when you consider the fact that the as are still there, and I think the as are playing this beautifully. We wrote about this last night, Ken Rosenthal. The athletic has taken the view that the as are still in this the as are ready to go the as aren't constrained by the same limitations that will prevent what an NFL team can pay collar Murray that the as can offer more whatever the team that drafts. Collar Murray is able to pay under the the as can pay more and the as seemed to be determined to still try to get column early now whether or not they really are determined, and let's just take them at their word that they are determined that throws a hell of a wrench into the gears for column Murray. Because no matter what he says, no matter what he does that path. Th- way remains back to baseball. It's there. He can go back to baseball whenever he wants. Because the as you're making it clear. Hey, we're fine. We're not we're not upset. We could be upset. We could tell this kid. I forget it. We're done with you. We're not playing this game. We're not going to be your leverage against the NFL. We're going to move on to someone else. But they're not they are determined to still signed collar Murray, which is going to complicate Murray's life over the next two and a half months because he's going to be asked over and over and over again and this time around when he is in these fifteen minute meetings at the scouting combine. And when he's otherwise meeting with teams, he's not gonna have handlers there. He's not gonna have agents hair his dad's not going to be there. Not awkward interview that he Abbott Dan Patrick SuperBowl week, Dan at one point said dad can Kenny answer the question dad's a little involved dad's not going to be involved at the scouting. Combine cod is going to have to go in. And he's going to have to answer these questions and the teams are going to be looking for reasons not to take him, especially because you're going to have scouts it pretty much every team. That is doing against column early because of his size, not just this height, but his size, and we had Russell Wilson collar Murray at the set that we had radio row in Atlanta. Just a couple of hours apart. And I was struck by how much smaller column is than Russell Wilson. They're both short. But Wilson Wilson has that NFL quarterback thickness to him where you can look at them and say this guy can walk out there between the white lines and protect himself Murray. I just he looks little. I'd be nervous. I'd be scared. Are you sure you're all right up there collared? Do you know what you're doing? These are really big strong guys. Are you sure you can handle yourself out there because you're not really all that big? And I don't know that his frame allows him to pack on all that much muscle mean seven years ago. Russell Wilson wasn't built like he is now I just don't know that Murray's frame is going to allow it. There's a picture floating around, and I need to post this at the website at some point of Murray standing with twain Haskins and Tonga to Tonga by low of Alabama at the Heisman ceremonies. I it's it's it's jaw-dropping how much smaller Murray is especially than Haskins and now Haskins in Murray are the two quarterbacks in the draft pool. The two two of the names we're going to hear the most about going into late April. So these are issues that he is not going to be able to get away from and he's going to be facing tough questions tough scrutiny about his size his stature, and whether or not he truly is committed to playing football because look whether whether he believes it at this point or not. If he ends up going lower than he thinks he should go. And he said it himself in this statement. He wants to prove that I am the franchise quarterback in this draft. Right. So if he's the third quarterback taken the second quarterback taken anything other than the first name off the board. Does that change his view on the NFL? Well, these teams have gotten wrong in our properly assessing my skills. So I'm gonna maybe have second thoughts about playing football. Maybe I'll play baseball instead. And if you've got the as they're throwing more money on the pile. It's a heck of a risk. There's a risk that you're going to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in one thousand nine hundred six drafting Bo Jackson first over all. And he never plays for you to see football teams only hold rights for one year after a year culinary goes back into the draft pool, assuming someone drafts if no one drafts, and then he's a free agent able to sign with anyone at any time. But if he's drafted those rights last for one year, and then he goes back into the draft pool next year. Remember, nineteen eighty six thousand nine hundred eighty seven eighty six it was the bucks in round one. Bo Jackson didn't play football eighty-seven. The raiders took a seventh round flyer at a time when they were twelve rounds in the draft. And Bo Jackson said, yeah, I'll play football part time. And I really do think the collar Murray's preference would be if he could find a way to pull it off. And I think he's going to try to do it. Although I don't think he is going to get anywhere with it. He'd like to play both. He said that to us he really likes to play both. He knows it's highly highly highly highly unlikely, but he didn't say it's impossible. I don't know that he can pull it off. He probably can't. But if he's even holding out hope of playing both then there is a chance that this full commitment to football isn't as full as he would say. And look we have to be cynical. We have to be skept west understand that this. This is part of the game. It's no different than running forty yards in a straight line or how high you can jump are all the things you do at the scouting. Combine there's a certain ritual to this the things you do the things you say to get drafted as high as possible the goal between now and the end of April is you get drafted as high as possible. Then after you get drafted wherever you're drafted. You figure out what you're gonna do. Just because you've been drafted doesn't mean that you are legally committed to playing for that team. The giants reportedly are out on calamari. They believe he's too small. I guess a team held the giants would be the most likely to have concerns about size. But look at this. This another angle where it's even more jaw dropping, but the dish we look at the we Haskins Murray they play the same position. Haskins has been spectacular. If I'm doing Haskins, I'm getting upset by all this column talk. Hey, people you forget about me passer and a runner not just a runner someone say just to run or. No, no, no, no, no, Dwayne Haskins passer, our owner and besides concerns are going to be an issue. Maybe maybe maybe Murray's genius here is he's making the issue his commitment to football and not his size. But here's reality. It's going to be both. And you're going to have voices in these organizations saying between the risk that he's going to go play baseball versus the reality that he isn't as big as he should be. It's not worth it. Let's draft a guy that we know is going to show up. See Murray is the worst nightmare for an NFL team when it's time to make a draft pick. Because unlike every other guy that they may draft Murray has a very viable and realistic option to play another professional sport and make as much or possibly more money. Most guys. They don't have that..
