"Break my heart but you cannot take my soul and my daughter emily. She's a talented musician. She's and a powerful voice of her generation. She's to fresh people the people but you have to make the first step to say that. And i messed a fierce. I'm glorious fun. I'm a performer. I've been married for forty two years. Have two children one grandson and five. Dogs listened to read tabletop. Stefan's as part of the mike duda podcast network available on the iheartradio app apple podcasts. Or wherever you get your podcasts You know at the college level. Tony coaches have control. They control the personnel. Nick saban's personality to me is more controlling. It's a better fit in the n. College than it is in the nfl. bella check has control pete carroll does but they've also had sort of odd drafts bills really struggled at some positions in the draft. Pete's missed some first rounders several. You could've worked in college but you always felt like a pro coach control. Wasn't that valuable to you. Go back to your career. How because i see a lot of these coaches now. All college coaches want control but some of these. Nfl guys. they want more say in personnel. Heck aaron rodgers now says he wants saying personnel i. I'm not a fan of that. What you tell me did it matter to you. How did you in polian make it work. People asked that question all the time especially lately you know who had control of the draft the final say who had the final say on the fifty three. I honestly don't know colin. I'm sure built. Did but you know. We would have discussed and i knew bill was not going to draw the player that i didn't want i was not gonna keep a gallon team that building what we had a great capacity to listen to each other buildings out and work together. And that's what you have. And it was a partnership. And and i don't understand this You know i've got to be ride has got to be my way. I've gotta have control. when started. Coaching in nineteen eighty-one chuck knoll. I went into his office on said. What am i supposed to do. I've never coach before. Tell me what i'm supposed to do. He said your job is to help your players play better and it was so simple but that is the formula and so i always felt that way. I don't have control. i have to help. My players played better now. Bill poland and ritz mcvay before that to their credit they got to know what kind of players would flourish. Well under me and so. Hey don't drop the player that needs a full time babysitter. Don't draft the pair player. That's not motivated. That's not what tony's good at. He's gonna coach him. He's going to work. He's gonna help them. But certain types of guys are gonna flourish here. Certain types of guys aren't and once we understood that we were in great shape. Did you ever have a player that you looked at and you went to bill or mccain said i this this this is gonna work for me and maybe there was pushback but you knew innately tony. This kid works for me that that is exactly what i want. Yeah and we got to know that we had what we call the buck filter. When i was at a tampa we did the same thing. What does it look like. And so bill. Poland got to know that very well and so the guys who might have been off other people's right are bob. Sanders is small. he's undersized but man he is up fiery guy he's attitude guy and you know and some schools would be that way. We had a lot of success with the iowa guys because we knew they were coached to certain way they were ready to go. We knew we're gonna get. And i i think that's really important. Who's gonna flourish in your system. So it must. You must look at the green bay situation. I know i do. And i just can't figure it out i i'll tell you say tony i wouldn't want control over personnel at fox it's i i can barely figure out how to host a show. Podcast i don't want it when you look at the green bay situation. Do you just roll your eyes at i do and you know as great as peyton manning was and is but they want to be involved in things. He understood that his focus was not the same as the the organization's focus. I was the same way as the head coach. My focus was on winning this year. Bill cullen had to focus on three four and five years down the line. So i had to defer to him. I couldn't say hey. We've got to make this decision. And it's gotta be this way i'll give you a classic example are super bowl year the year before we came. Close don't win it edrich. james's up. He's a free agent and bill. Pollen comes to me and says ed gonna get six or seven million dollars on the open market now. We could pay him and he deserves it but if we signed him i can tell you right now tony. We're gonna lose the white friday dallas. Clark reggie wayne two or three years down the road. We won't be able to resign or we can let go. It's a great year for the draft. We can draft laurence maroney. Maurice jones drew or joseph di and will resign those other three guys and we'll be competitors along time. What do you wanna do. While my first thing cl- niceness. We got to win this year. Let's re sign it. If we can do it. we can squeeze a dead. Let's do it but then when you really think about down the road. That's not the right thing to do i. I was focused in on that year. I didn't know the running backs coming up. Well sure enough we let during go. We draft those madurai. He plays great force when the super bowl and long. After i'm retired there are still in consensus for super bowl. Yeah the tony. You're a guy that could have you look at these coaches now in the salaries and there is this sort of I always worry about. Nfl coaches that. The league's not healthy for coaches. That it just asks so much of them now. College football tony. There's two signing periods. They have no off season if you're on a phone constantly As somebody who deeply loves the game or you ever concerned the coaching is less healthy than ever. I absolutely am and i know i was very very blessed to work for chuck. No and not get put in that situation. When i was a young coach and see a coach who was successful and didn't make it his whole life i worked for denny grain for four years then it was the same way so i saw you could do it that way. I tried to do it. That way and demonstrate to my coaches and players that we can win we can be successful and we can still have family light. We can have social life. We can As as chuck would say we can find purpose somewhere else and so. I'm really grateful to see mike tomlin. Go on and do it that way herm edwards and lovey smith and a bunch of guys who were with makes but i see the other side of it too and i see the people that feel like men. I've got to win. I've got to be here. I'm going to pour everything. I've got into this because i owe it to my organization my staff and you're right. I don't think that's helpful Andy reid. I always had this theory. Is that bella. Check dominates coaches. That have a certain system what he struggles with is quarterbacks that can move he struggled when he played cam and he struggles with coaches who don't have a system there play designers so andy reid his given ballot check problems. He doesn't have a system. He gets his players. He designs plays for his players. That bill is very good at film. Study this is what you do. I'm taking it away from you. Bella check is largely viewed as the best football coach of our lives. And you and bill had some real struggles was there. Were there things that bill did. The you felt you had success with. I mean you were in the rare position that you had a quarterback that was as good as his and so a lot of your games with bill tony. They were chess matches. They were real chess matches. And if you take the audience to this you add some success against him. Andy reid at the list is very short and Did you enjoy those. Were those sleepless nights. Take me back to those..

Who Should USC Hire as Its Next Coach?

"So i think. Usc should go get a nfl coach. I think name image likeness is going to be a little bit of an avalanche the next decade and these nfl coaches are not control freaks. They've dealt with players getting paid. They're very comfortable with it. They've got owners in the nfl. they're not in the. I have to control everything. Business i said doug peterson to me matt. Nagy if the if the bears fired him anthony lynn. All one playoff games in the nfl. All have a presence If you go. Look at usc miami and ucla three urban universities. If you look at the coaches that are had the most success. Pete carroll john robinson. Usc pro coaches chip kelly. Pro coaches getting it rolling dick for meal. Ucla pro coach. How 'bout miami. Last time they won. Butch davis dennis. Erickson jimmy johnson.

"This picture of tom. Brady and tony dungy. What was that from was from the hall of fame. Dude you put that on our account just saying something about how. They looked like aliens they did. They both have the whitest is i've ever seen in my life. It is spooky. What's happening there. it has just arrived on everyone's doorstep. The same way are the scientologists. what did they. They looked like they. Their faces stretched out in a way. That doesn't seem human. They there looked like there impersonating humans. We talked about this yesterday. Dan everything that you put it in your face is going to catch up with you eventually caught up to cristiano ronaldo sooner than it has old. Tom put it on the poll. Gamma please at lebatardshow is anything you put on your put in your face going catch up to you eventually but dungy looks kind of scary to like. You can't tell me that. Tony dungy has bow talks. You know what's happening there. You ever been in a really dark room. And someone decides to take a photo of you and then the flash comes on. That's the face you always make now. Tom brady has got a couple of different things going on there. But don't don't he kind of looks like a ghoul okay. I think that's a very strong word. I said kinda all right like blair witch project when they turn a corner and had a flashlight real quick. Did i see that and it might be tony. Dungy's he like tom. Brady's ratio of white to eyeball like color is very often this picture. I think that's kinda spooky is like. He's got a lot of whites of his eyes. And then the iris is just very small hunting. There's a distinct absence of eyelid. In this picture yeah. That's really the issue here. I think it's tom brady's teeth you only see the top row. He smiling and it's like only throwing us that's true. I didn't even notice more on the outside in the this is like a work of art where everyone sees something different when they kevin.

"The stadiums of the least met about But the way that they were called, and it was three highlights of him. Broncos here it was Tony Dungy. Holy and Say what you got to say. The appetizer we gotta hear from Gary Kubiak. It's like mine. Goodness right, Like I get the recency bias. He wanted all the way there. I don't think I was there. I don't believe so. But it's like, what do we like, right, like four years are like the first thing I was telling stupid for, Like the 1st 30 years of Peyton Manning's courage doesn't don't exist in Indianapolis that never happened Wild and Drew Pearson is going to join us tomorrow. The newly Named Pro Football Hall of Famer, which is awesome, because last year we all recall that he thought he was going to get in and he goes. I can't believe they did me like that. And now this year he gets in those those shots. I could watch it all all day. Where you have David Baker, who is maybe the largest human being on the planet. And he is a jovial human being whenever my time is up on this world If I get met in heaven, don't you gotta kind and hopefully I go to heaven, Don't you kind of think David Baker is going to be the one that's creating you to have it. He doesn't even seem real. The Charles Woodson. Reaction was great, Alan Fan. Icka was awesome. All them they were wonderful. Calvin Johnson. That was ridiculous. How? How they did inform everybody. One thing I will ask. Get these guys knew that it was coming now pay to knew he was getting in. Do you think paid him was genuinely surprised. For example, Charles Woodson. They did some interview to try to set it up. And then he once David Baker shut up. It even took him about 25 seconds. Only I'm doing it. You guys were all in on this. The genuine surprise I thought was really neat. I like it to be like, so we didn't obviously didn't have the knock on the door. So it's you don't really know how it's gonna happen. Think it makes any honest, even better this year, the hotel you hear the knock. It's like I'm not trying to say that it takes away the excitement, but it's like you know.

"Up one past ominous. I cooked for touch down there. Will you, Me and change. Scotty Miller, the doctor News of scared Brady throwing in our king sperm build on the far side six yards deep on the far side of the end zone, 39 yard Touchdown pass, Brady. Wow is right. All my goodness. I mean, give him 10 yards and let him kick a field goal. Worst case scenario. Huge, Huge mistake's here at the end of the half for the Green Bay Packers, Westwood one, No. Risk it no biscuit. And Brady was shoveling biscuits into his face, like they were made of alkali zing vegetables. That throw from Brady was his good is that coverage was horrible. I mean, I'm really not sure what defense according to Mike Patton was thinking by dialing that up on the final play of the half. What did you think was going to happen there? I'm not going to say it was the worst call ever. But Tony Dungy, of all people will keep in mind. This is Tony Dungy. We're talking about. Tony Dungy is not known for slinging lava. We're delivering straight fire. It's not his deal, but it was after he saw how that half ended. My man was reaching for his phone and thumbing out the following and I quote. That may be the worst defense of design I've ever seen with eight seconds in no time outs left Green Bay. I'm not sure how you play inside technique, man to man and not just play zone and protect the sideline and the Ed's own amazing And a tweet..

Chiefs' Tyreek Hill reportedly day-to-day after hamstring injury, could return in Week 13 vs. Raiders

"Big Win for the chiefs last night. no doubt about got it and they needed it at have it out of habit. It's in division. It is a road win technically indecision for Kansas City and So check doc box and they needed it but win because guess what. Raiders are out on their heels. Raiders have the same number of losses raiders. Now with the chiefs on their are by week head to New Jersey to take on the jets who have suddenly piece together a couple of wins in a row and this. This will not be easy for Oakland. Oakland and I'm sure gruden will be knocking on wood. If you with me about how difficult you know this Guy Jamal. Adams is and this guy. Darnall just threw four touchdowns but it's a win against a three win team on the road away from tying the chiefs and having a game in in Kansas City with the chiefs coming back from their bye week in week Baker's dozen with the AFC West Online. And I think that's all kinds of delicious. But for the time being the chiefs chiefs did their part to set that up as a possibility the reverse would have been far more difficult for them to handle going into a bye week and sure enough. I was concerned about that turf. There were large chunks of it coming up. tyreek Hill hurt his hamstring. We're assuming zooming he'll be fine after a week off the bye and Mahomes if you told me Christopher Brockman never actually let's flip flip the script if I told you if I told you the dafter Patrick mahomes defending. Mvp of your national the football league that his kneecap was on the side of his right leg. I told you the very next day. Not only would he only missed two games but the chiefs would definitely have him out on the field in Mexico where the game had to be cancelled due to concerns over turf that he would be out there. We would be seeing chunks of turf coming up and he would be the leading rusher of the Kansas City chiefs. What if I told you that fact no chance as what happened sure enough? That's more more more more impressive. Things too is that the chiefs the chiefs only got one hundred. Eighty two passing yards out of mahomes. It was the second least productive night and that statistical category for his entire career the only time in which he has thrown for less in a game was the game I just referred to where the KNEECAP was on the side of his leg and he got knocked out of it. Just after seventy six yards passing. But he had fifty-nine rush yards in the game. CAREER-BEST I'm telling you chiefs fans. You need to find a running game. I don't know maybe it's that other kid Williams who came in for Damian Williams. Maybe IT'S DARYL I duNno. We'll Shawn McCoy. Had some nice runs. You did have to rushing touchdowns not from homes. Last night. I get it to us the bigger phrase I get get it but What what what I need to see from his chiefs team moving forward with old man winter paying a visit more often than not this team it looks like for this team to make the Super Bowl? Not only will they have to win based on things all right now now. Not only will they have to win a wild card weekend home game but they are gonNA have to go into Baltimore or into new New England after winning that home game and beat the Patriots and or Ravens in their houses in a mid January on a presumably very cold mid January day. They are going to have to run the ball. They cannot let Baltimore or and New England pin near years back and go chase mahomes and there will be a dress rehearsal for that actually for the Kansas City chiefs coming up in week fourteen when they visit New England after playing that game against the raiders. There'll be that Dress rehearsal. We'll see how they can fair in that one but they need to find a running game name and right now they don't have somebody that can just carry it fifteen to twenty times a game and give the chiefs the the proper amount of breathing room and the proper amount of play action viability right now. I'm not seeing it. I haven't haven't seen it with consistency and that concerns me about this team's super bowl hopes

Andrew Luck retires: Colts' personnel moves forward with Jacoby Brissett

"The Indianapolis Colts in thirteen days face the LA Chargers went out Andrew luck and with your cover percept the guy for whom they traded Labor Day weekend at twenty seventeen he started fifteen games that year after being thrust into the mix with no opportunity to learn the offense no opportunity to learn the personnel no opportunity to learn the coaches everything's on the fly for Jacoby per set it was for an eleven which obviously is not an ideal record but he played well under the circumstances and remember twenty seventeen GM Chris Ballard was still trying to dig out from the mess that Ryan Grigson had made from two thousand twelve for two thousand sixteen in Indianapolis so I think there's reason for optimism as they move forward with your cover per set they have resisted all options and opportunities to trade burset elsewhere and now they have him and now he's the guy now Chris Ballard the guy who has compiled this culture Austin made the playoffs last year made the final weight has to cover percent he understands that the office will be different without interlocutors Ballard from Saturday night we're not gonna ask you go we were said to be Angela Angela was a unique unique player but you go we were set is is a winning football player initially and he is an apple I think your would you what Andrew said Cody said is a rare rare leaders he is he's a rare human being man I know look in that moment Chris Ballard needs to say something to inspire confidence in the locker room and beyond that the colts will rebound from this but look at what they rebounded from just in the past couple of years Josh McDaniels fails on a verbal agreement to take over as coach of the team following fifth Super Bowl fifty two bad stunner on a Tuesday night and we had a hard the rumblings that you know what McDaniels may not take that job after all and they didn't and they were covered and they pivoted to Frankreich and Frank Reich has ended up being the guy who maybe should have been at the top of the list from the get go and right there was a thing or two about moving on from disappointment about changing circumstances and adjusting on the fly right was the quarterback of that game in buffalo the comeback for the ages when the Orleans wrote thirty five to three it wasn't Jim Kelly he was injured it was Frank right it was Frank Reich who was the offense of coordinator the Philadelphia Eagles in two thousand seventeen when Carson Wentz suffered a torn ACL in the middle of December the kind of injury that would derail a team's playoff run they pivoted to Nick Foles the cobble together an offense that would work in light of his skills and they won the freaking Super Bowl with Nick Foles that was the final active Frank breaks career in Philadelphia's offense of coordinator he's not going to panic he's not gonna give in he's not going to give up it was three years ago that teddy Bridgewater suffered a torn ACL at a no contact practice it's always no contact quarterbacks just a week or so before the start of the regular season and Mike Zimmer said nobody's gonna shut down the season nobody's gonna cry force we just have to go forward it was not long ago we heard Frankreich explaining that he learned from watching Tony Dungy how to stay even keel in that setting how to be the call in the middle of the storm and the importance of that message sends to the rest of people the organization now since how possible Frank break knew what was coming so already was working himself into that state of call so he could be the beacon of hope and stability for the franchise because he knows that they're going to go into the season without interlock but regardless between Ballard who has put together a top flight roster couple of all pros not just pro bowlers but all pros that were rookies last year and continuing to build continuing to finesse continuing to make that team better and yes it makes that team worse not having interlock but there's a quiet confidence between Ballard and right and also what we've seen from the cover set I'm not gonna write the colts off at look people will write them off they will have no expectations the fall off the radar screen and and and now well one hand the division to the Jaguars with the Jaguars in the Texans act the colts I think we'll still be

"Taxes show yesterday. I caught a wild bird with my bare hands free because that's just who I am. When you love something you said it three. That's the rule and now my friend, Eric what taxes so is a lot like that caught bird. Fly. Your microphone in the mountains. Okay. That. Even for me somebody needs conversation with Todd Wilkerson. Hey, folks, this is the Eric Metaxas show, and I have the privilege today of talking to someone whom I revere. And whom you probably know his name is Tony dungee. And you're saying the Tony dungee, and my response is. That's right. The Tony Dungy in case. You don't know who Tony Dungy is. Maybe you were raised in Latvia. You don't know what football is. Well, Tony Dungy is he led the Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl victory in twenty in two thousand and seven and that was the first such win for an African American head coach in history. He also established another NFL I becoming the first head coach to lead his teams to the playoffs for ten consecutive years. You may now know him as the studio analyst for NBC's. Football night in America. He's the author of a brand new book called the soul of a team a modern day fable for winning teamwork. Tony Dungy welcome to this program. Hey, thank you very much. Eric good to be back with you again. I cannot imagine anybody who knows anything better about how to put together a team then Tony Dungy. So I don't know if this was your idea of somebody said to you if you don't write a book on teamwork you're crazy because you're the definition of somebody who understands teamwork. So again, you don't have to tell me whose idea was but boys this great idea. Well, thank you very much. And that's basically what happened. I get asked to speak a lot or ever since the Super Bowl really to speak to corporations to high schools two football teams. You know, a lot of entities about building teamwork and putting people together and coming together for a common cause. And so we thought we would put it down on paper and write down the principles that worked for me and football. But I I think they really transferred to life in general. There's no doubt about it. I mean, I think that anybody in any kind of business or any kind of organization understands that this is the magic formula. How do you do this? I mean, there's so many people there's so many books written on it. But you have done this. You understand it on a number of levels, not just on the football level. But I mean, the idea that you lead teams to the playoffs ten consecutive years. There's no way that that's a coincidence. You understand something about this? That is I would say extremely uncommon. So let's talk about it. The book is titled the soul of a team a modern day fable for winning teamwork. What is how is it a fable? Well, we decided to not use a, you know, a real life situation. If we did that, you know, you could always talk about the positive a little tougher to talk about the negative. People that, you know, well, and and you know, tell the history of so we used hypothetical fictional characters. Many people will read into it and feel like they recognize some the characters in the book, but you know, that that's still open for debate. But what we did was just talk about the four principles that we think are really important. That's where the sole the term soul comes from SOU L selflessness. Owning your role. Unity and having a larger purpose. And the first thing you have to do if you want to have a winning team or a successful organization is you've got to get unselfish people that's hard because our human nature is by definition selfish. God has put a survival mechanism. So you are thinking for yourself. I how do you overcome that? Well, that's what the other three letters are about owning your role is really recognizing your niche in the organization in the group and then being willing to. Do that and to exercise and and play that role out as well as you can in a movie, you can't have all stars on a football team. You can't have fifty three quarterbacks. Everybody has a different role in about two could only function when everybody accepts their role and excels in their role. Okay. So these are, you know, it's interesting because I know that you're a Christian I'm a Christian and a lot of these are biblical principles. You don't need that. Here you talk about it. I realized these are biblical principles that, you know, the idea that we're all inherently selfish a lot of people say, no, no, no that that's not true. Well, it is true. And you can you know, there's a good side of that in a bad side of that. But it ends up unless you can correct it unless you can understand it. It's all bad. And so here's my question because you got to issues first of all if you want to build a team, you looking for certain kinds of people, but I have seen this over and over in the sports world that you have a team, and you have one or two individuals on the team that they're not good at this. They are clearly about themselves, and at that point because I think a lot of people right now, let's say they're in business, and they say I've got a member or two on my team that I didn't put together the team or when I put it together. I don't know what I was doing. But I see that that person is out for themselves and their undermining. So that's a whole other side of it is that what do you do when you're in that situation because I think I've seen in the sports world some coaches unwilling. Ng to confront those team members. And they say, well, it's kind work working. I'll let her ride. It's an interesting thing, isn't it to just try to even figure that out. And you really can't if you want to have the team function at its peak. You can still win some games, and you can be good, and you can overcome that. But you can never be as good as you could be if you don't address that. So how do you go to that person? Who has the talent that you're looking for who plays a vital role on your team? But doesn't feel good about his role doesn't feel satisfied with his role. How do you get them to buy into the team concept? Well, you have to talk about you have to not only preach unselfishness, you'd have to model that as the leader you have to get other members of the team to model that and continue to talk about that with with that individual. Yeah. It it's not easy. But that's what you have to do. If you're going to be totally successful. There are so many examples I think, you know from from history. I remember when I was a kid. They would talk about Reggie Jackson that way like he's such a hot charity. So great. He's Mr. October that he is kind of attitude is maybe not what it could be on the team. You always see that when you're dealing with that level of excellence, one of the number one temptations is that that person kind of act special Iraq's different unless they have a coach that says, we don't do that here. We can't do that here that's bad for business. That that's part of it. And then also, you know, the what you see from the outside isn't always what you know. What it looks like on the inside? There have been a lot of players who had the reputation of not being good teammates. But they really were when you talk to their their group and their their teammates. What you see from the outside might be the furthest thing from the truth. There are other people that have the reputation of being selfless, and they really aren't. So sometimes you have to dig and underneath the surface to really find out. But you gotta get that cleared up. If you wanna have a good team a winning team, you have to have unselfish people acting not not taking their personal desires out, but putting their personal desires beneath the team goals. Yeah. And that is that is tough stuff. I mean, we've seen that. In in in basketball with the warriors. I mean, sometimes you just you see it being played out. And it is fascinating. Because it takes a certain kind of special person to be willing to do that to subordinate themselves, even if it's just a little bit because a lot of times people are going for records or they're going for. It's about their stats and not about winning and to have coached explain that. It's just not an easy thing. No, it's not enough. I know in the National Football League, you see it play out more than anything in salary because they have a salary cap. They have a limited amount of money. Now, everyone talks about being a good teammate. But when you go to a person and say, hey, we'd like to sign another player but in order to get him. He's really going to help the team, but you'll have to take less money now to enable us to do it. Our you really about teamwork. Are you really about winning? Or did you say that? That sounds good in theory. No, I can't take less money. All right, folks. This Eric Metaxas show. I'm talking to the great Tony Dungy. The new book is the soul of a.

"It hasn't got lost to the point where we can't talk about it. And now you look at that on top of the forty two point blow out on top of the trae. Rumors all of these sort of things is point back to him as not a I don't want to say a bad coach just a guy walking down the sideline on the court one. Call him a bad code you. You've been in most of us key when we play sports, but whether it's little league or high school, or even college you don't get into confrontations with the coach really because it's the power dynamic is very different. The coach has all the power in highschool. The coach has all the power in college for most of us. But when you get into the pros, and especially if you're a veteran player near making a ton of money, you can tell the coach to get lost or. I've said a lot worse using get lost. Because we're on the radio you can use something else. You want to do you move on from it? Can you tell the guy to get lost? And you don't know what you're talking about. And then show up to practice the next day show up in the next game. Everything's good. Was it all knows it. Always a little weird that I've had confrontations with Bill Parcells of confrontations with Tony Dungy of -tations with John FOX. Okay. But those wasn't you don't know what you're talking about get lost. Right. It was more about come on. You pay me. You brought me here. What what is it that off? It's a court hate is doing what's he doing in there for ten hours? Those are the type of conversations where it's like, well, let me let me coach him of you just do your job. Here's pretty much the two guys. You just mentioned per sales one of the best ever. Tony Dungy Super Bowl champion hall of fame. Oh famer. Okay. Luke woolens neither of those things. Yeah. But the conversations would Luke Walton in Ville McGee is some of the other veteran players is a different. Conversation because they look at him as either less than meal on the same level. So the respect isn't necessarily there at that point. They wouldn't probably challenge. Feel Jackson noise Steve Kerr or Gregg Popovich at the level because those guys got skins on the wall or anybody's even though Rick Carlisle or an Eric Spoelstra one of these guys they me. A million times. You're Brad Stevens. Who may not have a skin on the wall. But he's clearly in clam back at them with no problem, and let them know Sychev. But Dale, yeah. It'd be quiet. Well, the other part of all of this to I don't care what coach you are. If you're losing guys are gonna get frustrated guys are going to clap back. And if you don't if it doesn't turn around that it's not going away. It's going to stay there. The Lakers have been losing since then they haven't been winning games. That's the problem. Even if they went and they started to win. It's like, okay, we got it. We worked it out. We expressed our feelings, let's move forward. "While right now, we have who do you want to win the Rams of the patriots Rams, no surprise winning? When are we doing our MVP draft? I'm looking at the rundown later on this hour. Okay. So after Tony Dungy after Cuyler Murray will do a two round MVP draft. And you're against the grain. I oh, yeah. You ready? No also there was a basketball deal yesterday. We did talk about this. I think I know what the Knicks are are going to do or try to do and they're going to go. After some big names. I've said all along I thought Kevin Durant ends up as a knick not wavering from that you trade porzingas to Dallas. So they get a nice young tandem there. And I think that you're going to get maybe two free agents go to the Knicks and maybe you're in the position to draft Zion. Williamson. So I mean, this is systematic. This is fun office tanking is what it is. Let's trade are good players and get some stuff in return some coins in return, and you know, we'll try to finish the rest of the season. Yeah. What could go wrong with the next xactly? You have to trust the Knicks. And there's no reason to trust the Knicks with this process. Our next guest a form. For university of Minnesota quarterback is the most recent NFL player to throw an interception and catch an interception in the same game. Is that a good record? I don't know. He went on to become a successful head coach with Tampa. And Indianapolis, many young coaches consider him an influence and a mentor in his current profession broadcasting. He's often cited me as his influence there. And maybe that I'm the greatest broadcaster of all time. You might say I'm the Tony Dungy of broadcasting or something like that. Please welcome. "Tony Dungy in the on-deck circle. Booger McFarland and Kirk cousins will stop by last hour spent some time with drew Brees had some interesting things to say that will make some headlines. That's for sure is drew is basic, by the way, the play the controversial play. The no call is called Buckhead and Buckhead is a famous neighborhood here in Atlanta. So it was let's call Buckhead. We're going to the Super Bowl. And of course, it didn't end that way. But through saying look if I can be here talking about that play. Then the Commissioner should have been out there on Monday or Tuesday last week just to say, look, hey, we missed it. We usually get these calls, right? We wanna make sure that these things never happen again. I also want to know why is it that a college football game has more ficials than an NFL get. Why is it we add more empires to a baseball playoff game than we do? In the regular season strengthened numbers. But also, I don't want all star officials all-star teams calling playoff games I want familiarity. I want a team. That's there. That's been there because it's a big game. And I want to rely on you. By the way, we replayed play called Buckhead. This time we through the flag on the play. So I don't know if it's any solace to saints fans. Yes polling that completely fixed it jazz over lately. "I'm also curious about this though tone. If you had an official who was right there on the spot in New Orleans with his play. But we've seen plays before where three officials throw a flag on the same play for the same penalty. I'm I was shocked that nobody got together and said, hey, hey, limit. Let's just talk about this here. Because what I saw is like wouldn't you wanna help protect that official. Or is it their egos are at stake? And nobody wants to point out something say, you just missed it. And you're right in front of that play. No. That's the problem that no one talks about and an all star cruise and people who had more with each other. If that was the normal crew, you know, I I'm sure that would have happened someone back just decides somebody would have thrown the flag and say, hey, you didn't sit. But I thought that passing France, let's put the ball here. But you know, it doesn't always work that way. And then the other thing I think we've got to get away from in the playoffs is they don't wanna call thing, you know. And and they don't want to be the the deciding factor. But if it's a penalty in the first quarter, it's company in the fourth quarter. It's penalty in the preseason game. It's. Penalty in the playoffs. And we've got to get back to just call the game as it is. And not saying, well, you know, TV doesn't want penalties. We don't want game. Stop. It's so bad things. Go in the playoffs talking to Tony Dungy NBC football night in America analysts, and of course, hall of fame. Coach Ken Bill. Bella check, be outcoached. I I wouldn't say I'll coast, but there's certainly seems to come up and happened. And you know, just this last game they and the patriots through what they always do. They had a different game plan all sensitive and defense. Kansas City wasn't ready for it. They got the leave fourteen nothing. Andy Reid and his staff made some great adjustments. And they scored thirty one points in the second half. Tom Brady throws a ball just a little bit high off gronkowski hands. And it's intercepted. If d Ford is lined up all sides. They're more say I'll what Andy Reid did a great job of adjusting look at that thirty one points in the second half. Wow. Was that masterful and the different there. "Tony Dungy in the continental tire coaches corner. Coach how are you ask more about the Super Bowl matchup or the controversial play in New Orleans? And I guess that's the good thing about football. Then it has everybody's passing. And you know, I feel the pain of the the saints players and their coaches and their fans, but that's football. And I hope we don't overreact to this. There's bad calls. You know, nineteen seventy two people from Oakland still tell me French. If you hit the ball, I hit him. And then I'm in the, you know, university of Minnesota Watson, the fight kings and Dallas, and I still believe drew Pearson. Tocqueville, and it was bad call it happens. It's forty years ago. Okay. And some some of this you just have to let it go. But we can't overreact and start saying we want to replay everything and you want to go to court when the call doesn't go our way, I just I can't buy that. Do you think there's any changes in the offseason? Whether it's plays like this in the last two minutes where you'd get. A challenge flag you could use or is there a change to overtime with the competition committee. I don't I think no on either one. Because in the last two minutes most things are reviewed anyway, if you start bringing judgement calls into what's pass interference. What's holding was the fort really all side or was he just close? Let's let's take a look at that. You know, you're you're opening up Pandora's box. Now, what what change I hope they do make and what I would recommend going to time officials, and let's get some consistency over the whole game. Not just one call here or there. But I I think that's the change we need to look at not looking at reviewing one call and they overtime I'm fine with it. A sense of you gotta stop them. Okay. And remade the change to fill those. So they can't just have to. I kick a fifty yard field goal to win. But but somewhere along the line, you gotta get a stop and get the ball back for your all set. Yeah. I'm there with you. Both of these. I don't want to overreact. It was a bad. Call and overtime. I'm fine. I think overtime worked. I think people have a problem with overtime because the patriots took advantage of it and Brady led them down. Whereas the Rams play defense force the interception and then kicked the field goal. Yeah. But classic classic example, three third and ten and they didn't stop any one of them and New England one long yard situation. The Rams vote up causing interception and were able to win the game. So both teams that lost its all head had opportunities..

"I mentioned before the break that we're trying to move on and start talking about the Super Bowl matchup here. But I do think that something will happen over the next two days that will bring this back into focus. What happened in New Orleans? I do believe that the league is going to find Nicole Roby Coleman for the play that wasn't flagged. But I'm guessing there's a helmet to helmet that is going to cost him about twenty five thousand dollars. Now. I'm sure the league. And I'm wondering does this make it worse or better certainly for a New Orleans fan? If you know that okay. He got fined for that hit even though. He didn't get flagged. So there's two fouls on the play. The NFL is admitting if this happens in this is what I was told look for this that there's a possibility that you know, the defensive back for the Rams is going to be fined for the hit. So if there is helmet to helmet, then there's also pass interference. Or there's helmet to helmet pass interference and hitting a defenseless receiver. The NFL is going to have to admit to all of those if Nicole Roby Coleman is find. Even though it's a bad idea to find him because you're going to stoke up the story in there's nothing the NFL the NFL has to do it. You know, because you're going to say wait that's not a final offense here. This is day four. We haven't heard from the Commissioner yet, I'm guessing that he's going to try to duck for cover and wait till Atlanta. And then maybe he pops up and we start talking about reviewing plays like this and overtime. And whatever else we're going to bring up at his state of the union address. But I was told to keep an eye on that the possibility of him being fined, by the way, I love where Nicole Roby Coleman is from frost proof Florida is where he's from. I'd never heard of frost proof, Florida. I think it's a population about three thousand but Nicole Roby Coleman, and we'll talk to Mike Florio later on in the show, and I'll ask him about that if he thinks that robe. Coleman is going to be fine here by the NFL already. We'll get to your phone calls. Come up with a poll question. Let's welcome in. Tony Dungy NBC football night in America analyst, mclovin did you settle on the poll question? You want to go harden or you want to go? "And because of the fact that television is so good, and so clear eyed now that officials just have the toughest job. I believe that they ever have had. That's why they need help these two suggestions, I hope in the NFL competition committee gets together in Indianapolis at the scouting combine in February a little more than a month from now they're going to consider real changes to the officiating system to how plays or call into how they are reviewed by replay the people who run this game. Oh, it to the people who watch this game to do a better job than what we saw New Orleans on Sunday. And now my conversation with Tony Dungy. Back in the Peter King podcast, really happy to be joined by longtime colleague, get NBC sports. Tony dungy? He's a hall of fame football coach, you know, him from the sidelines for Oso many years in Tampa Bay in Indianapolis. And now if it's possible to be more famous on TV than in the booth it's entirely possible are on TV than on the sidelines entirely possible. That's happened to to Tony Dungy now because he is a very well thought of and claimed a studio analyst for NBC sports. And Tony's got a book out. We're going to talk about the book and a couple of minutes. But anyway, Tony, thank you. And thanks for giving us a few minutes. Hey, Peter, always good to be with you and fight it for this time of year, my favorite time of year, obviously with the NFL playoff. So I'm going to ask you to current events questions. You. I would assume you're sitting at home on Sunday watching those two games. Is that correct? Yes, sir. Yeah. So when you saw the pass interference and the helmet to helmet that was missed. On Nickell Robey Coleman of the Rams when he obviously, you know slams into Tommy Lewis, it should have been pass interference and on closer review. It also should have been a helmet to helmet hit as well. That wasn't called. Tell me your first thought, and what did you feel when you saw that not flagged? I thought watching it live was this has bang bang play. It should have been called. But they're probably not gonna call these guys don't like to make that call at the end of a playoff game. Then when you watch the replay. And you see that it's not saying it is obvious. It is playing I it just felt bad for the same. It should have been called. But it happens now. Saints fans have short memory 'cause we saw three or four those kinda hits on Brett farve that weren't called in and they're Super Bowl year that were very very flagrant. Same way weren't called the league sent the apology later on. Should have been called. So it happens. But I think our officials have to get out of the mindset that this is a championship game. They just have to call the game the way they would always call regular season game. Is there a recommendation if you're sitting in on the competition committee meetings, which starred in Indianapolis in late February at the scouting combine? You know, a lot of the guys who are going to sit in that room. You know, rich McKay very very well. You worked for him in with him for years in Tampa. You know, Mike Tomlin very well. You know, Sean Payton, very, you know, a lot of the guys who are going to be sitting in that room. Plus, I think you also know politically climate in the NFL, they don't wanna revolutionize this thing. But with a call like this that quite possibly could have sent the wrong team to the Super Bowl from the NFC. Is there a solution or something in your mind that could make fishy? Getting better..

And now in the dead week before heading to Atlanta for the Super Bowl. I'm gonna have Tony Dungy NBC sports and also New York Times bestselling author. He's got a new book out. We're going to talk to him about all things NFL and all things writing as well. We're also going to have Edward the longtime ESPN reporter who now is a free agent in the media world will land somewhere in two thousand nineteen. He had an interesting experience at the NFC championship game. We'll talk to him about that. He's a sideline reporter for Westwood One right now. And also we're going to be join. Owned by Jason mccourty of the Super Bowl bound New England Patriots. I spent a few minutes with him after the AFC championship game in Kansas City on Sunday and recorded something his brother's been going to the Super Bowl every year. It seems Jason mccourty has been on some bad football teams. So he's rejoicing right now that he is finally going to the Super Bowl. So before we get to our conversations. Just a few words about the officiating controversies of this past weekend in the National Football League in where they may be headed, you know, a few years ago. I think it was at a league meeting. I had somebody on the NFL competition committee when I said, listen, why don't you change this? Why don't you do this? And he and he just said, Peter, they're never be any monumental changes in the replay system or in the coach challenge system until somebody's ox really gets gored until. It makes a difference in a Super Bowl or a huge playoff game. And that's why I think now the NFL might be willing to discuss and consider some very very different things, which are and I'm going to discuss two of them right here in the next couple of minutes. About replay and about what should be done right now with -ficiating in the NFL. Look, I am ninety six percent on the side of NFL officials. I think they have an impossible job. The game is just too fast. You heard Bill Belichick a couple of weeks ago giving impassioned defense of officials because of how difficult a job. That officials. Have the game is fast. They're trying to keep up with it. Could they be younger in better shape? Yes. And yes, but I do think for the most part they do a very good job. The problem comes in. When you have a game of huge magnitude like the NFC championship game. And there's a call made in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter that had a real influence on the team that is going to the Super Bowl. I would argue with you. I wrote about it. In my column on Monday that the pass interference and helmet to helmet calls that were not made on the same play with a minute. Forty three to go in the fourth quarter and the saints driving to try to take a lead to win the game that the fact that those were not called meant that the New Orleans Saints, essentially because I believe firmly after talking to people in their organization, they would have had a first down at the six yard line. Drew Brees would kneeled one time. So the minute thirty nine the Rams would have taken their final timeout then breeze would a kneeled again. And so and then he wouldn't Neil again on third down. So by the time the Rams would have gotten the kick back from the saints. There would have been maybe fifteen or twenty seconds left. They would have had no timeouts and they would have had to travel about thirty five yards. Absolute. Minimum to attempt a field goal to tie the game to send it to overtime conceivable that that could have happened unlikely..

"Whatever the best offer is, and if you can get to teams in on it, maybe you can get an auction going where it doesn't matter. What you want? They just keep bidding each other higher and higher. But at some point when the when the best offers on the table, you're gonna have people I believe in that ravens organization to say, look, we only got this guy one more year. Anyway, let's take these draft picks. Let get more players, and let's go higher coach. Now how much of next year? Do you think factored in for Harbaugh when he's on the sidelines or maybe even at halftime when with Jackson wasn't playing? Well, and you've got flacco on the bench. How much of what he's going to be doing next year to factored into decision to keep Jackson there. We were talking about that at NBC and Tony Dungy said if he sticks with Jackson, then that means he's committed to staying because he doesn't wanna do anything to undermine Jackson for next year because to flacco then he just wants to win now. And he's not thinking about next year because he may not be there. And then I said or he just wants to get it over with. So he's sticking with the guy who's not playing very well. And you get out of it now, and you can get onto your next job next year that that didn't go over very well. But, but I guess you can't rule out that possibility just thought, hey, you know, what let's keep the kid in. And when it ends it ends, and we figure out what's going on for twenty nineteen. But I think he wanted to do what he could win. I think I think after that missed field will and it was a spot there where I thought they had to make the change. But they got that good field position. And I think that was the spot where you go with flacco. But I felt like they wanted to keep going with Jackson and it almost worked did. And I felt I felt like it was so bad in the first half they needed to spark from from Joe flacco. And I don't think Lamar Jackson would help some grudge about the point where he would have been ruined next year. He's a. Turkey for crying out loud. And they have a great backup who's available to come in. And try to save the day. Yeah. And you saw in the playoffs..
