Maybe you haven't. But of all the things that you can position your money for. Maybe you're thinking about growth and a quid itty dividend. Lots of people are thinking about producing income and Sometimes safety. What should you focus on First retirement is simply different for different people. Almost every situation is at least a tad bit different from the next one. What's your neighbor needs on their money could could be similar to what you need, but it also might be very different. So if we're trying to put some common denominators into the retirement planning and investing landscape, if you will, What would they be? Well, we're going to do that for today's show, and we're going to talk about three things that we think every retiree and retirement plan. Should have a plan. Some people get by just fine on their pensions and social security payments. So the three things we think every retiree should focus on Our safety of their dollars. We want to focus on these three pillars of retirement planning and investing because to help create a solid financial plan, you need to start with the basics. These are the basics. You will be hard pressed to find anyone who would say they don't want their money safe. And that they don't want to grow their assets and that they don't want liquid access to their money. Everybody wants some version of these three things, and there's even more important reasons to have that during retirement. So stay with us throughout today's show, because we're going to detail each one to help you understand how to plan properly for each and You know, Brad time when we talk about kind of simplicity, I think one of the things I just appreciate about you guys and our team so well is that you know, these are sometimes difficult to talk about concepts. And they can be complex, and I think there's really a lot of art and describing these in a way that is simple, so everybody can understand. "S O. If you have credit card debt resolved to start paying it down this year, there are a couple of strategies you can use. One is known as the debt Avalanche method would focuses on hire a trip like that. Let's say that Avalanche that sounds official Does you know this type of method focuses on high interest rate debt first? Another method is called the Snowball effect where you start paying the lowest balance first, but whatever it is, be realized, think about how much you can afford to pay off during the year. So try to cut back on spending while paying down. What you owe debt can be a huge burden in retirement. When most people are living on a fixed income. You know, I've been getting that question a lot too about mortgages. Right? So should I pay off my mortgage? I'm in retirement. I've heard that you shouldn't have a mortgage and retirement. S O. I want to take money out of my 41 k to pay off this mortgage. So now we don't have one. And really, The answer is different for everybody. Right? You have to look at everything as a whole. But look at what they call the time value of money. If you're if you're paying low interest on your mortgage, let's say it's 2.5%. But your average rate of return in the market is between six and 8%. After you kind of take a look at that. Well, maybe it makes more sense to keep that money in the market working hard for you than it does to take a big lump sum out to pay off the mortgage. So sit down with a financial advisor. Somebody that can walk you through those different things. If you do have questions like that. That's a big purchase. Right? You're taking money out of your retirement funds. To pay off this debt. But maybe that's not the right decision for you. So you want to just get a second opinion on that? Second opinions are great, and I think you know Brad it whether it's that or buying a car or whatever. You really wanna weigh the interest rates ties right into what Tom talked about about the Avalanche method versus paying off the highest interest. Math will tell us Hanging off those highest interest balances. You know, first is going to make a difference in the long run. But there's this emotional component right to investing and saving and sometimes paying off those small balances. It just feels good, right And it kind of generates this excitement in this Momenta might keep paying them so I don't know that there's a right or wrong answer. It's probably a different answer for different folks. But You just want to make sure you concentrate on that debt. You want to get that knocked out, boy. We see it every day when folks enter into retirement, the more manageable you know, everybody has some version of Do I have enough money? Um, I gonna be okay. Right. That's what everybody is wondering, Is there entering retirement, and if you have less expenses, it just makes it a lot easier, right? We don't have to take us much out of those retirement accounts. That naturally means of money last longer, so it makes it much, much easier if we can tackle out of debt, especially to your point, Brad the death that I would call not smart debt right double digit credit card debt, sometimes. Mortgages air just so low right now. It makes sense that let your money work in a market but lots of options out there. Lots of ways to tackle that depature. Want to jump on it? I'm Tony Drake certified financial planner. Welcome back to ask Castle is.

Wall Street numbers Were Pretty Spectacular For Investors In 2019, Can We Expect A Repeat?

"Includes Wall Street where the numbers were pretty spectacular for investors can we expect a repeat in twenty twenty joining us live the namesake Tony trick breaking SO seats on WTMJ morning Tony happy new year good morning here in our area we're doing good it will be hard for Wall Street to match what it did in twenty nineteen investors I'm sure would like to see a repeat but is that realistic I don't think that's realistic we should expect a little bit of a slow down it was such a phenomenal year was the bask in about six years for actionably away from the basket much longer than that so can be pretty unrealistic little one of those slow there are probably a slowdown in corporate earnings but still anticipating a good year but hard to be what we saw last year only one of the worst we always hear is correction yeah that's always a big scary Warner and I think we we talk about a lot more meat when we talk I was about to have been a long term outlook you really have to be aware of your brain if you're a retiree getting really close to retirement might be a good partner yeah I think about you know just your risk a little bit taken from your grants off the table for a lot of us that are still working a ways away from retirement we can't worry about the short term volatility long term you're going to do really well state last name say Tony Drake from Drake in associates joining us live on W. T. M. J. yeah it's hard for people I think your your condition as an investor when you're younger to be a little more aggressive and watch the big swings it's great when the market goes up big time it's tough to watch it go down in and you take that hit but as you get older she when the news is good on Wall Street you go to your thing is on your app you looking go all I didn't make any money today that's because you're not taking the risks of the highs are lower but the lows aren't as bad yeah I think you were able group point even if you know your Coleman ball starts right anytime would take some forced off the table then in those big banner years you're gonna look back in hindsight twenty twenty at which you're a little bit more exposed but you know the most retirees or people close to retirement missing a little bit on the outside does not change impact their retirement but if you lose you know twenty thirty forty percent like we did in two thousand eight either right before retirement and first decade of retirements much more impactful image of some of the upstarts Tony for younger investors you know a thirty year old who's got thirty five thousand dollars with a college loans and is driving a used car and renting you know paying rent of thirteen hundred Bucks a month how how are they supposed to save money yeah that's always the top one writer but the most rewarding part you can really buckle down and look at that that most of us have something in our lifestyle this probably costing a little bit more than we think this can be a great time of year if you got a raise or bonus you're used to live on without that that's a great opportunity use that money either side of your mortgage you find knock outs and that or holds weird creature savings towards retirement so it's pretty tough to find someone that cannot be able to do something in a special if Europe starting somewhere that time value of money just getting that money really blown forty over time makes a big big Tony I think a lot of is just as simple as taking advantage what your employer offers to anything back again to when I was young and but yeah I didn't take advantage of that stuff when I should have as early as I could have because that was just something that wasn't top of mind to me but if you take advantage now that compounding sure it's up here in a lot of those of that match your former employer it's free money you're not gonna get free money a lot of places in life and you know there's some new contestants if you look at some other countries that you know automatically put employees and to invest money up to opt out of savings rates are much higher in our in our country for the most part got dropped and she told me I know that it's different for everyone everyone's life style is different they want to do different things in retirement but I saw something that said that if you don't have a million dollars saved you're not gonna make it yeah I think those numbers are really cancellations and they sound good in your great headlines and in very so much first for so many folks a lot of it just depends on what you're spending what your income sources are pure someone not many of us out there anymore but if you're someone who's working not to have a pension that big number may not be quite as important so I think it comes down to more understanding what you're going to spend having a plan accounting for inflation and taking a look at some of those things in retirement also some big changes in retirees with this new bill that passed at the end of the year Tony we had three said the interest rate cuts in the past your are we going to get anymore in twenty twenty no corner ten minutes now to look like they're gonna accountable but mark your from this year which is great they're not anticipating a rising during Christmas that can help of course change of taxonomic gala but it looks like you're going to kind of hold tight there and I can it's a good thing for investors over the market and it's a political year too so twenty twenty should be interesting in that regard yeah politics definitely make a big difference we also saw a big change in our federal bill something called secure act retirees now don't have to take required minimum distributions tell seventy two used to be seven and I have seen that their retirement money you brought up to you well one tax deferred a little bit longer but we can no longer structural diaries beneficiaries have to take it out over ten years he is the namesake Tony drink from drinking associates on WTMJ Tony thank you so much happy new year thank you very

"Ready to sail into the sunset this retirement? Ready with Tony Drake on WTMJ? Welcome back. You're listening to WTMJ. This is the retirement ready show. I'm Tony Drake with Drake and associates. You can find more information at wealth, Wisconsin dot com. We got Brad Allen here today and talking a little bit Brad about a couple new bills that are floating around in Washington. The Senate special committee on aging has a couple of bills one. They were calling the retirement security act of two thousand nineteen idea here is to kinda pool retirement savings plans in what's called multiple employer plans and the other one is really a modernisation of the simple IRA plan and hopefully attempt to help more employers offer retirement accounts and get people saving and thinking about the future. And I think that it's kind of a natural segue. Brad to really think about what is it. That we can do to take more responsibility for retirement savings. I think it's a concept that you and I talk about all the time. And sometimes it's just really not understanding your savings options. You know, there's IRA is out there for one ks health savings accounts can be a big tool in retirement many options available when it comes to saving for money. But with so many options, I think it can really be confusing to kinda sort through the fog if you will and really determine what savings tools appropriate. Where should I be putting my money? Maybe there's one that just doesn't quite work in my income or my scenario. I won Brad. Maybe as the IRA. Yeah. I mean, one of the benefits of the individual retirement account is that you can lower your taxable income each year. You can save up to six thousand dollars in an IRA this year in an extra one thousand if you're fifty years or older they have that step up..
