MLB commissioner confident league will get through season

"What happened with the Marlins in Philadelphia was just a reminder of how fragile this season is. So here we are. Three games in there's a crisis in Major League Baseball is trying to stage a season in the middle of an escalating prices. We both agree. If it expands, you've got to stop in a country that obviously hasn't been able to corral Corona virus. Any little. One thing consent this season spiraling. It doesn't look good. But MLB commissioner Rob Manfred telling our Karl Ravech there is no reason to quit. Now we are playing, he said. The players need to be better. And I am not a quitter. In general. Manford confident his sport can get through the regular season and postseason without being stopped because he also cautions that there's a chance that not every team might play all 60 games as winning percentage could be used. To determine playoff teams. It's time for straight talk brought to you by straight talk Wireless buster, only ESPN MLB Insider on Darien, Mel, There was really discouragement, you know, after what happened the Marlins last weekend Jeff Passan reporting about the frank conversation between Rob Manfred and Tony Clark. That happened yesterday. And then the news this morning that more cardinals tested positive the dominoes keep falling in the wrong direction. I just did, SportsCenter said. You know if Major League Baseball is a boxer, they just keep taking body blows. And it's some point. Yeah, it's just going to become too much. You think Keith Overman just report a little while ago that MLB is reached out to their broadcast partners and basically told him you need to prepare alternate programming for the week ahead, So yeah, very discouraging, and I got to tell you there's there's a lot of frustration at the team level with people feeling like that, while for the most part There are a lot of players trying to make it work front office is trying to make it work that in some cases that behavior just did not change in a way that was going to best protect all the players. They thought it was a Hail Mary All along, you know the thought was is that there could be some positive tests. And if there was that there could be some isolation. But for example, the major league Baseball testing has been every other day. Well, what happens if a player is infected? The day after he gets tested, and then he's around his teammates. The lag in the test results, which Sean do little. The national spoke to right off the bat where there was concerned that you know with the results just don't come back fast enough to do the isolation in the contact tracing that would be necessary to hold it down Those air reasons why, at the outset of this thing, there was a lot of skepticism that they could actually make it

Two hours of the show down two more to go lots to talk about a lot to discuss. Thank you to every single person who called in over the 1st 2 hours. If you missed it, Mr Hell of a conversation, Major League baseball fall of their stumbles and trying to get things together. It looks like they may have to consider canceling the season stopping the season. Rob Manfred allegedly spoke to Tony Clark of the Players Association and said Look If the players Can't get this under control. If they cannot help get this under control, then we might have to call things wrapped. No surprise when you think about everything that has happened, Marlon's testing positive Philly staffers, Cardinals players, It goes on and on. So from the rule adjustments to Players aren't unfortunately, testing positive. You don't want this to get worse. You don't want to manage her to catch it. You don't want Ah, player or any more players. I should say tohave a further complications. Everything is is loose. Everything is out. The horses are out of the bond there out the stable and they're running around. Now you gotta corral. Um Major league Baseball has a tough around ahead. So thank you to every person who called up our phone line. Any point in time you want to call the phone lines are here 855 to 1 to four. CBS That's 855 to 1 to four. CBS a big shout outs to produce the James gross fo for coming on and help and make sure that everything runs smooth. Today. Outside of Major League baseball, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what's going on. It was revealed for all of my NFL fans and hopefully we can have NFL season but You know if you're gonna operate like Major League baseball Good luck. But Antonio Brown The same guy who just I feel like a few days ago. A last week decided that once again for the third time in months that he was going to retire in a few days after that. He's complaining to Roger Goodell and the NFL. Hurry up. Finish my suspension. Lay it out. What's the holdup here? Antonio Brown finally got his answer. He is going to be suspended for eight games. Unless you've been living under neath Iraq if you're not aware Antonio Brown over the past year. In several years. He's been soon he's been suing folks he's been having to deal with an issue of sexual misconduct Allegations AA battery charge. I mean, assaulting, Ah moving driver and we can go longer and longer of unfortunate issues that he's had to deal with. He's been on A social media insulting folks. He's I mean his the mother of his Children at one point in time, but just was the subject of his ire on Social media. And now we know what the deal is. Antonio Brown harped. For quite some time that you know teams won't touch me because you won't lay out the suspension. Well, now we know if we can go ahead and get a 16 game slate. Or even if we can't The clock is going to be ticking for any team that decides to add Antonio Brown to its roster. You can add an Antonio Brown right now. And he will be suspended. He will be out. For the 1st 8 games of the season. And then he will be available for the latter eight if we can go ahead and get there So you can call the sound and you can price Antonio Brown and say he's insurance. You can say we can only add him for the eight games plus the playoffs. This is a boon for a team that maybe looking to go on a long run. This is a boon for a team that knows that. Hey, if we can play some damn football, we have a good chance to go all the way. For Seattle Seahawks. Four Ravens. This is a good thing for Antonio Brown. Now what you also have to keep in mind here is Is that the eight game suspension May not be it. Antonio Brown could face Mohr games. Antonio Brown could face a longer suspension. If word comes out that they are Additional allegations. If work comes out, or things are found to be true that we don't know right now. This is not the end of a bill. But for right now we know he's facing eight games. In his agent said this Antonio is excited to resume his outstanding football career and is looking forward to playing in the 2020 season. Good luck, Santonio Brown. I think he needs it. It's obvious I don't think you know you need a degree in psychology to see that. Obviously, he's dealt with his own issues of mental health. The NFL has insisted that he still continue to to seek help in becoming a better person and trying to understand some of his actions while he's been suspended. And we've seen the photos and we've seen the videos. Antonio Brown, working out catching passes of Russell Wilson Antonio Working out with the Ravens is Cousin Hollywood and Baltimore and and Lamar Jackson. We've seen it all. We've seen it all. A matter of fact, Lamar Jackson had some comments about his workouts with Antonio Brown. And I want you to hear him listen to what Lamar Jackson had to say. Food on Earth guy. You know, he he's passing a bus for the football like me. He was working. You could tell that this man is he won't go like 24 7 and at the root girl he's doing nifty like he already tried to regard. He lifted we go. It didn't go through a route after that, guys, we live this morning and his guys isn't a quick perhaps always like that type of girl. We need an unlocked room. Well, that's great. I mean, Lamar Jackson is talking about Antonio Brown, the football player. And we know Antonio Brown. The football player is absolutely amazing. No, we had a conversation last week as to whether or not Antonio Brown Is the whole of fame football player. And I say right now. No, he isn't. He has a couple more years to go ahead and achieve that, If he can get into the league and stay in the league at age 32 I certainly believe he has a chance to kind of Just pad his his stats and moving. Move him on up the list. I mean, right now. Antonio Brown ranks 28th and career receptions. He's number 35 in career receiving yards. Had a little more than 11,000. But you know what? He's really starts moving to the top of the list and closer to the time if he can get into that 14,000 range. Now What do you think He's a Hall of Famer? That's a different conversation. How much do you value ethics? How much do you value? How good of a teammate someone is when you let him in? Because the reality is.

"It's just teams. Come back. WHAT'S GOING TO BE PROTOCOL? The Man Will Cam Newton's namedrop. A lot of people got excited because Cam Newton really played well against US and a couple of games that he had against okay. Is he going to be the starter this year if you were going to gauge? You have to ask me. I'd say no given given an I. sit and it's not because he's. He's a bad. tastic. Transcendent Type Player I love watching him. Play I love call games against him. This offense here so predicated on timing and detail and I think that's why you had. The frustration were quarterbacks here last year because people weren't spots were expecting expecting to be, he wants to throw the ball into. Cam is a big play player, and when I say that. Seven steps is off the back foot weights. He waits to run around SORTA like Ben. He's very similar bed Rothlisberger, and he likes to push the ball downfield. This this'll opposite Harris. It's one two three yards out. Ataman than get the ball in the playmakers hands. I think the timing. Dan May hurt him the most. Because if you said okay, we got CAM BACK in March. And he had three months under normal circumstances where you had ta throwing camps being around all the guys in the locker room and it's a great locker. They won't race. For me, it looks like it's a two month trial team. And maybe it was bargain. I don't know that talk to anybody that if he doesn't get the job, I can't see cam sitting there on the sideline week to in Seattle with a clipboard baseball on backwards. That's just not who he is. He should be a starter. How good is still? Pretty good. It's pretty good. Very cerebral. Doesn't get rattled a lot of cut a lot of called a lot of preseason football games for this team over the years especially going back to Garoppolo and that's the one thing I compared to I don't care. I don't compare standing the Brady. Don't compare anybody to break. So I looked at what they gave Jimmy preseason. Wise a lot of it was basic power. I single tight to wide receivers for jared. Last year they threw the kitchen sink Adam and threw it out. Pretty good meeting. They went empty. Too, tight ends multiple sets three wide, four, wide, no backs and you know he handled. Everything directed everything traffic, wise with the hands on the road in Detroit. He throws the heck out of the same ball. Like to what Lake is delivery on the did cuts, and he doesn't flinch people hit him for and that's funny. Because he got shock robber now that last year he was there. Yeah, he's athletic. I. Think People you know they're looking at. Can you run the same offense for Cam that you do for stem vice versa? Do you think that's possible with New England? I. Think new. England was stood him. They keep probably eighty percent of their offense at it. Tweak it to help him and see what he does well. That's really really good. What Billy O'Brien and Josh. mcdaniels will done over the years they they really helped to quarterbacks..

And you think the Commissioner Lo and behold after several tries try to secure the commissioner. He was able to come on yesterday the day before Tony. Clark is okay and one thing should be pointed out in fairness to the commissioner because i. told you what my source had told me a couple of weeks ago once they locked in on sixty games, they were not budging off sixty games. The commissioner and the owners did offer up more games I think they went up to like seventy. Four Games wasn't always sixty games I was told when it got to sixty. No matter what the Players Association did, they were not budging, so I just want that to be mentioned that the commissioner and the owners did try to opt for more games. It just didn't work out, but once they got into sixty. They were locked in also the commissioner, saying there was initially a report that maybe four to six owners were interested in shutting down the season, and I was told one to two, and that's what the commissioner said yesterday. Eight seven seven three DP show email address sepia Dan. Patrick Dot Com. NFL, quarterback moves usually set off a chain reaction when you think about it at least public perception. Patriots bringing Cam Newton raise the question. About quarterbacking room. And now the AFC East is looking at New England. Differently Jared Stidham, not quite sure Cam Newton. We know what he wants was. Buffalo bills were going to be the team taking over the AFC east. They got a young quarterback Josh Allen and maybe up to the task. Athletic all the Armstrong. He looks like a younger version of Cam Newton. Sean McDermott was on the staff when Cam led the Patriots to the Super Bowl in two thousand fifteen, the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. And you know he's probably hoping that Josh. Allen is able to emulate Cam Newton. Sam darnold talented, but still unproven. Miami's got two of their. Cam Newton's made the AFC East a lot more interesting and he actually made the new, England, Patriots Cool, the question is how much is he going to play for that answer and more, we bring in the Patriots Radio Color Analyst. Scott Zinger back former Patriots quarterback. What was the reaction Scott when the Patriots Sign Cam Newton. Well I mean we. We had the greatest name to play the position for twenty years, and what he departs, and you're left with Brian Hoyer Jerry and I I like both those guys I know Brian really well. He's been here multiple times. And they go at stem last year to be the only got backup backup Tom Brady, so you lose the name, you'll lose the say ego I, think you lose at personality that leadership in the Locker Room and ban you hear Cam Newton's named after hearing not a single thing, three months three and a half months because of Covid I mean we really haven't had any sports to talk about..

"After the last CBA where they took a beating and Tony Clark really look bad they have so much riding here Clark knows his reputation is really on the line they won't give an inch it is it is this is not a CBA negotiation it's in a pandemic it's a temporary short term thing has nothing to do with nextel we go she ation they don't wanna give here but I do think in if you had to pick one I'd say the owners could easily gone for gone ahead for a seventy game season and pay the players pro rata and that would have solved as Tony Clark been stubborn himself or is he just carrying out the marching orders of a stubborn union I know I think their leadership yeah I think he's part of leadership that didn't even get it right the last time they gave up too much in terms of allowance let alone yours too almost finished our camp with this luxury tax thresholds and that is that you know that that's poison to the players union always has been acquired a set salary cap so they they I mean they did I think listen to some degree players were asking for or the personal perks that go it to go with with the CBA rather than those financial important financial decisions so he was bad and I think leadership they're trying to figure out now how to just basically have to turn that around and turn their their own reputation around so I think it's more about that you want the players weren't you know when we're in the middle of this it always feels like it's the end of the world def con for baseball never pick it up up up off the mat but sometimes that's just really reactionary emotional in the middle of this do you think though that there's gonna be long term ramifications maybe hurt to the brand to the sport just by dragging this out as long as they have even if they do get to a season well I think by itself I would say no just because I think baseball bats baseball fans but I do think baseball is at a critical point and when you combine the bad feelings that I have about this going on here with what's going on with the game right now how slow it's because everybody concerned about the pace of play everything else using fares and losing younger fans I do think those two things when you put them together good really have an impact on down the road as far as baseball fans of a yeah and you know you hear a lot about it it are not connecting with young fans eleven metric that's a priority for their crude so I think it's probably something to that and now when you try this which alone now yeah I think baseball is they're going to have to they have to make some immense somewhere else John Harper joins us long time New York baseball columnist you can read about acid Y. dot TV on the latest on if we're gonna get baseball back in what is going to look like you get S. NY dot T. V. follow him on Twitter as well at N. Y. N. J. Harper HAARP is always awesome to pick your brain man thanks so much for doing with us on a Sunday today I appreciate it very very much Hey you got to be a great company you too John Harper joining us here on the show and to me there is a very telling lesson in all of this and that is that neither side actually wanted to get a deal done they wanted the other side to take Advair deal and that's two different things if you want to get a deal done you find it flex points and say well we can deal with this all right good deal this but I'd rather have this but we can work with finance but we'll see here but you got a C. as their and what neither side data was except that they would have to accept the other person's offer if you didn't look at this is a communal decision and that's been the most pathetic part about it is that neither the owners nor Tony Clark in the union saw it as let's make a deal instead they said you take our deal you have to come to us and as John just suggested the deal could have been done so much more easier than this and so much quieter than this but there was all of these ego baked into a well we lost last time we won't lose again or we've never lost to this so we won't lose this time and I think about Danny ancient situations like this that's going to sound like a little bit off the wall because we're talking about baseball negotiations but there is a reputation that the GM of the Celtics Danny Ainge has as he will make a deal unless he knows he wins the deal and because he has won some big deals namely the deal for the big three well specifically Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett ray Allen was involved in that but with the Brooklyn nets because he swindled and hoodwink the Brooklyn nets so many executives won't do a deal now with Dante age because they view it as he won't do a deal unless he's got you over a barrel he winds it that's not how you get a deal done of course you want to get a deal done and feel like you got the better end of it but winning a deal is different than doing a deal when you know you've gotta give up something to get something and with Tony Clark of the union and the owners have done is they've proven they don't want to get a deal done they want to win the deal and.

"At the end it was going to be who caved on the financial side and guess what no one did shocker it's time to get back to work tell us when and where that's how Tony Clark's statement that was released over the weekend right they rejected the owner's latest proposal and said we're done with this we're completely done obviously this is a futile effort and we're just going to give up and let you rob Manfred and the owners decide what we're going to do with the baseball season and and we'll show up when the time comes and I'm glad they finally said it you know I was holding out hope for a time that they could come together on something and I I wish things would have been settled long before this but all this posturing in the hollow gestures we also saw right through it and it was just time to stop the charade because that's what was it was it it was a complete sham and a farce in a charade but I think this was the players and game if not the entire time then certainly the bulk of the time take the public ones you know I don't think they anticipated Blake Snell going off on Instagram live like he did but they knew they were gonna take their lumps in the public sphere but all along I think they were telling themselves don't cave take your lumps don't cave because in the air at the end of the day we're gonna force rob Manfred and by extension the owners to be the bad guys and institute this whatever forty four or forty eight forty nine fifty game season whatever it ends up being and remember it isn't the only bad guy and all of this Tony Clark Blake Snell build the weight the owner of the cardinals there been a lot of people who have said some really dumb things some things that are the opposite of reading the room but when baseball does come back and I know some of you have given up in are gonna tune in for this thing but plenty of people are and when these people do tune in they'll cheer for the players because the players will be helping their team when they'll be hitting home runs not to say that you will forgive and forget but through all of this if your team has a shot to win a championship then you'll at least be happy and the owners don't have anything like that the owners have nothing they can do from now until the end of this season to make you like them again the players can the owners can't and I think that's why it was the end game of the players all along was to just hold out knowing that this was probably going to be the result because at least they can go out on the field and back some of that trust that love whatever you wanna call it from baseball fans but the owners don't care I mean that's it that's the other part of it and that's what's maybe makes it even more frustrating owners don't care do you think that they got to where they are in life and in business by treating everyone fairly and looking out for other things besides their wallets no of course not because if they did they wanna be worth over a billion dollars so they don't care so you have one side in all of this who feels like they can make you love them again by performing well on the field and then you got owners who just don't care what you think of them all they care about is their wallet I mean the players are bad guys to an extent because even with full pro rated salaries at forty eight games or whatever it is even with the mid season a large number of Major League Baseball players will never end up in an economic situation that so many people are in this country right now so to an extent they're bad guys but rob Manfred and the owners are the worst guys and they had another example of it like I I don't care about you know the the claims that the players are negotiating in good faith and we tried this and I mean that's that's all those are lies and we know that and it just doesn't it doesn't bother me but there was something in their calendars statement that did bother me NGS illustrates how the owners do not care and they will say and do whatever they want because even though you might hate them they're still gonna be a lot of people who will tune into games buy merchandise go to games when it when we're allowed to do so and that's all they care about the end of the day but here's what bother me in the owner's statement over the weekend called the M. L. B. A.'s position that players are entitled buzzword to virtually all the revenue from a twenty twenty season played without fans is not fair to the thousands of other baseball employees at clubs and our office are supporting financially during this very difficult twenty twenty season to bring up the ticket takers ushers the grounds crew and insinuating that paying the players would keep them from paying those people it's just another level of slimy and another level of why.

Baseball union says poor job done of marketing Mookie Betts

"And yesterday the Union chief Tony Clark came out and he talked about how baseball's done a poor four job of marketing Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts the quote from Tony Clark Monkey should be a household name. mookie should be a one name guy you say Rinaldo you say messy you say mookie you should know who mookie is and outside of the baseball world I don't know how many do you look. I think it's a fair point by Tony but again I go back to get into the room. Get in and start talking they for example we heard in in March that they had agreed to begin talking and then they had a meeting recently to talk about out there meetings and when they're going to talk it's just two and a half years into this and how many years of free agency have been affected by the fact that they haven't negotiated changes. You want the two sides who have a lot of things to talk about actually start it coming together and sustainably talking. I don't know if they actually will once they get in the same room. What do you think yeah this is about as angry as seen? The players are openly talking about Shrek. Someday you know obviously it's not gonna be this year next year. Maybe two thousand in twenty one but the players biggest complaint really is just a competitive balance. You know what five teams based lose one hundred games. I think there's what seven or eight games that are separate teams or twenty games back so you know and so the agency if you have all thirty teams front a win. It should speed up free agency rather than just a few teams doing it J._D.. Martinez talked about his thing. It was like a semi net myer because teams that need a power hitting bat just winning plucked talk cheaper guys off rebuilding teams so they didn't have to spend a hundred million dollars to get a look out to get a guy like Martinez so when we have events like this you know whether it's the winter meetings or at the All Star game at the world series you hear hear both sides talk about yeah we we're GONNA get into room.

"Now, they were down forty two twenty three. Forty two twenty three and it is now forty two thirty five. So give him credit for hanging around as we saw Tennessee do last night to Purdue darn near take the game from. Back to the baseball story for a minute. Since I said, I would get you back there. We obviously we're not surprised that Tony Clark. Who is the director of the union for baseball and has done basically, what people believe is an okay job at best that he doesn't have a lot of great support out there right now. That the league acknowledged in fact, not only had this. Dealt out. But acknowledged the existence of the belt calling it, quote, an informal recognition of these of those clubs salary arbitration departments that did the best. And as you know, the league's been accused of collusion before. Tony Clark's quote, the clubs make sport of trying to suppress salaries in a process designed to produce fair settlements, and that shows a blatant lack of respect for our players the game in the arbitration process itself. Tony Clark said in a statement today. Now, the vast majority of arbitration salaries agreed upon before club and player do battle in a conference room in the last two years. Thirty two players have gone to arbitration eighteen have won fourteen have lost. In those thirty two cases. And you remember earlier this year USA today bringing this up the Trevor Bauer said he faced character assassination. From the labor relations people during his hearing. Meaning that they get very ugly in there and talk about every negative thing. They can in order for the arbitrator do award the lower more team favorable salary. And that process is one that they agreed to so. In that. They can't complain but to revel in it or to reward. In such a blatant way. Those that. Took advantage of it. And did best by keeping player salaries down, obviously a slap in the face to them. And they're not gonna like. And the difficult thing. The difficult thing for the players these days. And this is our fault as fans because we're contributing to it when we pay ridiculous prices, you pay six dollars for a bottle of water YouTube embarrassed. I'm sorry. I mean, I'm sorry. But. You you can't complain about it. And then feed it. You just can't you can't do both. If you think it's outrageous act, like it's outrageous. If you think it's outrageous pay forty five dollars to park, then don't. I agree with you. But then don't. Too many people take what they're given. And then whined about it as if it's not a choice. But that said, and my point was that I interrupted my cell phone, and that is that players, regardless of how much they make these days are for the most part underpaid and they're underpaid because the owners the owners are making that much money. Most of it off television. They're making such ridiculous amounts that they feel justified charging six dollars for a bottle of water. It's ridiculous. But I say this all the time and people don't think about it much. And I don't blame you. You don't have to think about it much. But you can't find a limit without testing it without breaking it. If you charge twelve dollars for a beer and people will pay it. You gotta go to fourteen. You gotta find out. If you charge forty five dollars for parking lot's, full, you're going to fifty. So we participate in this a lot of us participate in this. But man, you're you're a lot different than I am if you can pay six dollars for a bottle of water and feel good about it. I can't do that. And you know, look part of it is personality driven, right? I mean part of it is because that's me. But part of it is also. You know, the ridiculous of it. And the feeling that you're being taken advantage of. But these players because of the TV money are actually underpaid. Percentage wise, they they're getting. Less because the pie is ridiculously big because your grandmother's planned for cable and sports cable that she never watches. These leagues are getting a piece of your grandmother's cable Bill. She got no interest in watching on. No. The nets from the Mets. And so the money goes up and up and up and they don't have to sell a seat anymore. That's why you don't come. It's okay. You come in pay forty five dollars. It's better. But if you don't come to the game, it's fine. They're fine without you. So it's not like they're feeling pressure. There lower our prices or we're not gonna less people here. You don't wanna come? Don't come. We're fine TV will carry us. The only that can't get away without his hockey because they don't take the revenue in financially from Tel. Hey, it's spike. I know it's.

The league office awards the team that keeps the salaries the lowest orchestration a WWE style championship belt, sell you the Bill as disrespectful to the players and the process while the league said, quote, it's just an information recognition of those clubs departments. That did the best. This is a weird one, by the way, Tony Clark, the executive executive director of the NFL the need glass. Yeah. Yup. "Let you change in time of a game. This is rob Manfred on pace of play changes. We're still hopeful that we're gonna make an agreement with Tonia on pace of play initiatives. I just think that whether it's by agreement or otherwise, the only prudent course force at this point is to be in a position to proceed. Lead. If in fact, we have an agreement or decide to do it under our eggs, and I'm going to say this carefully. If we decide to do it under are collectively bargained right to do that. Rob Manfred making note there of making making sure that hey, this is not a violation basically saying I'm willing to work with the players association. But I don't have to remember it would cause more issues that rob Manfred is not under the CBA. That's what that last sentence. You said there was key. He does not have to get approval to do the pitch clock. He's gonna most likely he's going to do it one way or the other. He's just willing inning. He realizes he needs the players association on board. Otherwise, it's going to lead to more issues in a couple of years with the CBS that statement from Tony Clark, the executive director of the players association said they've presented a wide ranging ideas that value substance over seconds insure the best players on the field. Every day. We believe these substantial substantiated changes are imperative now not in two thousand twenty two not in twenty twenty-five, but in two thousand and one thousand nine. I think the pitch the pitch clock and pace pay play. That stuff will be sorted out before the season. I again, I think the pitch clock is happening. No matter what whether people like it or not. But the bigger issue is this free agency and something that was not gonna go away any time soon. Well, Colin Kaepernick did that problem. "Now we continue to wait and the animosity between the players association led by Tony Clark. And major league baseball led by Commissioner. Rob Manfred is going to weave its way into your baseball coverage for the coming weeks as free agency drags on. And it always does drag on March. I'm not sorry, not free agency. But a spring training drags on. It does like there's a excitement about pitchers and catchers coming. Then there's excitement about you know, what guys what young guys are gonna make the team and who looks good. But that it drags. You're just like, okay. That's enough. Let let's get the regular season baseball so mid March is. You know is enough. Spring training little too long. I think for everybody. But on the other hand, you watch the videos now, which are available wherever whatever team you root for whatever writer or news outlet that you follow who covers your team. You see the onfield workouts that are just like high school and college workouts guys, go into backfield's fielding balls and doing what they do. So it's sort of our fault for watching them. You know, it's like, yeah, we're having spring training. We didn't invite you were you know, when the game start you guys come watch. But now, we don't do that the writers and everybody comes right away. They come when pitchers and catchers come and we just all as a as a baseball loving public. We get overdosed. Because those guys are down there they justify their existence. Posting all this stuff. And we we go with it. Wayne is a New Mexico is up next on CBS sports radio. What's up, Wayne? Hey, thanks for taking my call. I don't a hundred percent agree with you in regards to cabernet just wants to play. I think it is definitely a self preservation as far as his perception of who he was because it's always saying like winning cares. All so, I think what's his concept of his mind with with that being said is that the same ad is he would probably go for him as far as it becomes the starts winning again and be successful within his career can kind of change a negative stigma has been put on him. That's quite an assumption know that he's gonna win. I'm it's one thing to play. It's another thing to win your teammates control a lot of that agreement. That's but that's why he tried to take that risk, right? He rather get that opportunity to try that then just give up and say, well, that's my negative stigma. I that's probably more the opportunity where he's thinking of you're right. There's no guarantees in a win by that's probably more his approach than just I love playing the game. I think he wants to really change the perception of him. That's a. It's a reasonable theory. It's definitely a reasonable theory. Art is in Youngstown, Ohio. He's next on CBS sports radio. A art. Are you doing good? A chapter base of Nike. Not the face of it. No. He's the big contract bigger than any other player that he not the biggest contract. No Tiger Woods had a bigger contract. Oh, he's one of the top five. Right. Maybe I mean. Yeah. They spend money on them to to your point. They spent money. If if you advise Nike multi two million at the team just to promote them at that team. So you might make money taking them just an idea. Yeah. I mean that kind of two million dollars to them not very much money. You know that I get your point that. You're bringing publicity to your team you're bringing a lot of other stuff too. And you're bringing a lot of people that will make assumptions if he gets caught. Assumptions if he makes the team. And then you'll deal with your own players as to their reaction. So there's risk there. I think it'll be overblown. In other words, I don't think there is great risk. And I think you may read that there's great risk. We have a very short shelf life for our news things that seem like a big deal all of a sudden art and science they're replaced by something else that we can't predict but something comes along and takes away the spotlight from what we thought we'd be talking about for a long time and sweeps it away. And this is a bigger story simply because of the time of the year. Right. I mean, it's quiet now. So any story. They they print the paper three hundred sixty five days a year. They're gonna put something on the back in New York where we have tabloids. There's something going to be on the back page. We're here twenty four seven three sixty five CBS sports radio. We're gonna be talking about something. So when avoid comes we fill it, and sort of the rest of the media. So this cabernet thing is either bigger because it's.

"The money they are not looking for a an now looking for an error caused more contract or uh you know a a you darvish contractor a jd martinez contract they don't have scott boras representing them most of them do what they're looking for is just an opportunity and a chance to play and very often if you're out of the game so to speak you're not playing it you're not people can't see you you're not top of mind well it becomes a harder job for your aging and so the union is putting on this really cool camp were they're just got so many people that were planning on playing games they've got so many free agents that are there that are actually going to start doing intrasquad games as well and potentially match up against some of the other teams in the area so i like it too proactive way to to showcase guys who've who've been in your game for a while and tony clark who's the union rep he kind of look set the fact that there's so many teams rebuilding and not wanting to spend money that's really hurting the potential of these guys to get contracts and so yeah i think it's a really cool idea view remember the nfl has started doing this now where they're putting together a a combine all voest for its veterans so that you got all these guys in the same place where scouts or where teams can then see veterans out and and go through some of the drills to and not just the young guys in case they have a need to fill our toll free line cbs sports radio free land.

"As in days and days why is that happening over the air add parade by a horrible parade uh why why is it like i don't know well i think the answer is is the players association and tony clark they they don't want to agree with this but the real answer is that houston and then chicago and maybe to a certain extent milwaukee in minnesota have set the template for middlesized smaller markets a major league baseball to win that you have to withhold your finances and develop your young talent on paid talent and then it can pay off so like the sixers have done in the nba but they haven't reached the finish line houston did it in baseball the cubs than did it in baseball the brewers and twins are doing it kansas city probably prior to houston did the same thing and if you're in a mediumsize are smaller market in major league baseball if you're not a yankees met a red sox a dodgers an angels this is probably the route you have to go and it's proven to be successful just look back three years before the cubs win the world series they're losing one hundred games look back three years before the astros won the world series they're losing one hundred games but not spending a lot of money or doesn't this open up a a possibility for teams i mean not everybody's rebuilding at the same time are they i mean does this open up the avenue for the teams the big spenders to be like they know what's going after these guys right but then the big spenders if they're not in competition with the with the mediumsized markets they can withhold and say well no we're not offering that two mushtaq is no we're not offering these sixyear deal to jake arrieta because we don't think the competition is there for those dollars so we're offering four years and five years and twenty five million dollars less and waiting for the market to dictate that agent has to have player sign so it is a is a significant cat and mouse game being played with major league baseball ownership and those who are running the the players association an agents and the two aren't going to see eye to eye on this that they're not going to but major league baseball you can call collusion but.
