"The wrong way. People are like that. People use, look, I didn't realize at the time when I was calling my shot that it was going to be bulletin board material for Clemson's. I thought it was going to motivate South Carolina to say, okay, yeah, we got some guys that believe in us. No. No, it didn't at all. It got really ugly, really fast. And hats off to Clinton. They play better. I mean, they really should thank me. So Clemson fans, you should really be thanking me. I take it your pick in Georgia tomorrow. On purpose. You know, maybe so. I think Georgia is the best team in college football. They've been the most they've been the best team. I forgot we actually had fans here. And I'd be straight up with you. I appreciate I said Georgia's gonna win the SEC. And I said that there was win or bus this year. They had to do it. They had to complete this whole thing and they've set themselves up to be in that position. I love what Georgia's done defensively offensively as well. They've been explosive sets and Bennett really stepped his game up and he's been clutch for them when they needed him the most. Stetson Ben has either done it with his arm or his leg to get him a crucial first down, or it's continuing to set their team up for points. So let's get inside the game tomorrow because the conventional narrative is obvious Georgia front, Alabama offensive line, Alabama running game. None of those narratives ever mentioned will Anderson or anybody else or by Shawn. Right. But if you had to, if you were appealing to Alabama people, which I know you are give them the secret to winning this game. The secret is stay strong where you're strong at. It was strongest at and don't worry about the run game as much, or the lack thereof, or where your offensive line is that struggles in the previous couple of weeks. I wouldn't worry about that at all. That's not going to be what determines this for me. It's going to be all about Bryce young. Bryce young is your best chance to win this football game. Coming into it, I want to open it up. I want to take shots. I want to be aggressive, offensively, the whole game. I want bright young to lead me. Lead the charge. And if Alabama wants to win this game, Bryce young needs to throw the ball 45 to 50 times. He needs to open it up. We need to cut him loose and just take the shackles off of him and say, let's go do it. And young man, you are the guy to do it for us and defensively, if you can get a turnover too. If you get up on George's, how does Georgia react? You have to be able to take Georgia in a deep water to see if they can swim. That is the mentality, and that's where the focus is is like we can't bat an eye and no matter if George is up or whatever. Alabama still has the belief that they can come back because they've done it before. And Georgia has not been put into pressure cooker where they are thinking about something else late in any game. They've not been in that situation. So you mentioned ray Chung and I'm thinking certainly he's got a quick release. And he's superb. So does that negate what is clearly Georgia strength or how does it negate it? Well, it's really, how do you negate it is the speed in the matchup that you have on the outside? Do you like John metchie versus some of these cornerbacks of Georgia? You like Jameson Williams, match up versus the corners of Georgia. So how do I dictate and make sure I get the matchup that I want first and second down when you know George is going to maybe playing a little bit more man or some of their own concepts, you have to be aggressive at those times. Don't just throw it and wait for third down. No. First down, second down, when those teams are running the football they're trying to establish those things, that is when I want to be the most aggressive in my play calling. And sometimes doing the opposite of that, which is on third down, running the running back draw. Not just throwing the football. So you have to do some different things that George is not prepared for. And can you get just enough yards in the run game to at least keep them a little bit honest because I really want to throw the football, but I have to be able to run it just enough to say that, okay, it's second and 7. It's second and 6. Those will dictate because when you get second and 6 or second and four, defenses will get a lot more vanilla, they're gonna play more man to man coverage in those situations. So that's the matchup that you want and anticipate to get and that is when you're gonna take your shot. So you flip it over to Dan Dan landing and Kirby smart on the Georgia side. They know what they have. They know where they are weak. And they have some weaknesses. How do you overcome that? I mean, what's your game plan from the first play? Well, it's totally different mindset if you're Georgia, Georgia, you're doing what we do. We are the best team. We've been the best team all year long. We don't better I we go out there and dictate and play this game on our terms. We're going to be out more physical than Alabama. We're going to hit them in the mouth and defensively. We're going to fly around until they don't want anymore. And if we can fly around, make a turnover too. And then we really get this thing going in. Georgia is so good because when they get up, they just choke teams out, like UFC style. They just choke them out. They have nothing left, and they run the ball, and they don't care about plenty of the football. They pin you back, and then they pin their airs back defensively and go get you. Talking to Roman Harper here about the game. Roman, sometimes it is a mental game. I'm curious not to spend any time on last week. But what was in total the final drive? What was going on with Alabama? It wasn't pretty. They weren't having any success. I think the crowd played a huge factor in that at auburn..

"Okay. And I would later my wife's like, did you tell them they could jump off the garage roof? I'm like, hell, I might have. I don't know what they're saying. This is not fair to have you earlier this show because I'll be wiped out here in 15 minutes. So as you've made your way to say that your world famous, but in the south, what's your ear for the different dialects? Well, it's very funny because in LA they think southern dialect. And there's no such thing as because Tennessee is different than Georgia like Tennessee. They washed their clothes and they picked flares. I have relatives in the Low Countries South Carolina, which it's almost like a little bit it's that geechee, it's a little bit more of that Cajun kind of thing. And then New Orleans. I mean, there's a lot of different southern accents. And so I remember the first audition I went on in LA. They wanted a funny skinny southern guy. And so I thought, well, I got a shot at this. And I went in and started reading in the lady stop me. She said, no, no, no, can you do a real southern accent? And she was wanting me that, hey, y'all. Hey, I said, well, that's not a real southern accent. And anybody that's from the south, spot Saturday mile away. Jeff Foxworthy was Jeff, I know you got a gig tonight and I know it's fun to be back on the road. So how did you spend COVID? Trying to listen to my wife, talk, I learned very early Paul that I am not qualified to be the only person she has conversation with because she could talk free dogs off of meat wagon. It was a job. So but the cool thing is, I did become a grandfather over COVID. And I don't know how my daughter pulled it off, but somehow she got on the Jerry Springer show. And we were able to find out who the father is without spending one time of our own money. Not real. We have no idea.

Who do you think you're gonna learn the most from and i think eli drink wits ally drink which is fantastic over missouri. I think that he's got a ton of personality. The more people get an opportunity to meet him in. Listen to them. I think you're gonna come away impressed. And i think that you know i had sabin. Who's on the top of my list. Just because i've got so many questions to ask him about how name of jim image and likeness is going to work out bright immediate eligibility in the conference. How does he like that The vaccine and how is he handling that with his players. I mean so many questions and in coach save. And i think that's the reason why if we ever had kind of a quote unquote commissioner of sports. As our college football sabin would be a natural at it. Because i think that when he talked he's like e f hutton when he talks people listen and you know he's earned that respect is one of the greatest of all time. And you know. I would be really intrigued to about brian harsono. I i think a lot of auburn fans are still trying to figure out who brian hartson is. I mean they know. He's the coach at boise state. But what does he mean like. What what what is he going to bring and i. I got a feeling that that's going to be one of the big stars. Coming out of next week's media days is when people and i've i've listened to a lot of his stuff. A lot of his talks tried to consume as much. Every time i've listened to him. I came away blowed away with what he had to say and i think he brings that same passion to hoover at media days. All right we got genius going to join us in fifteen minutes. Your phone calls. Sec kickoff slash media days which one of the new guys are you looking forward most to learning a little bit more about ryan horse. I mean we. We know what ryan arson did it. Boise state and what a track record he has. But it's always interesting to me for a coach to come into this culture and address the media media day for the first time. Because you know. I guess you could describe it as that You know from a lot of College administrators around the country. I think the statements were kind of met with a collective viral I think when mark immer is doing is just getting ahead of of guess everybody else This has been something brewing for a while. And and honestly i think that this coming week a lot of commissioners were planning on speaking about this topic at their individual media days And i think mark emerge news at or at least felt the rumblings of this. But but look i mean this has been coming for for a while and i think he was just trying to get ahead of it In he decided to do it in an odd way By selecting only sirri media outlets to have a call with In ostracize other media outlets I'm telling you Market we shocked where you want. Were you on that call. No i know. No i was on the call And obviously and you know this Written extensively about name image and likeness. And all this other stuff going on for months now and Have have have requested multiple times to speak to mark him or In that request has been Denied each time So i know was not. I was on the call and again i i just think it was a way for him to get ahead of the story so to speak But look he he. You know he's lost his battle. Long ago i mean the conference commissioners. They're kind of running the show and this is something they are planning to were planning to or are planning to talk about In the movement there been there. The rumblings have been there that governance structure changes coming. Ross dellinger sports illustrated Joining peter burns here on the paul finebaum show and again it. Also it comes across. As i'm going to break up with you before you break up with me even though the like you've already moved my stuff outside the house kind of ten of setup but i mean i guess you know. The has his opportunity to do that with that being said what there was fancy words being used. I'm not a smart as you deli where you say you a change in governance wh- in layman's terms. What what does that mean to the sport that i think that we all love here on the paul finebaum show college football. Yeah so right now. The way the ncaa governance is structured a policy. Their policy making committees in boards that No basically make the make the rules and those boards and committees are made up of athletic director's conference office members Assistant athletic director's Maybe sprinkled in some athlete representatives and from across schools across the division one which is three hundred fifty schools And they all make rules on these committees in these boards To to opt for all of them all three fifty plus to operate under an and that's been a problem for a while. now you have schools that with budgets. One hundred fifty million dollars making rules and operating under rules that As well as the same school operating under the similar rules that have a five million dollar budget or fifteen million dollar budget. Athletic budget is so. That's that's the plus one problem with this. And i think that's one change you'll see now the power five have some autonomy powers in some legislation. Some rules But they want more. I think you're going to see them have more You know and and and so that's kind of how things are structured. And i just. I think i think what you're gonna see conferences. Just start creating more of their own rules instead of under a big umbrella of roles because you just have so many differences across the board in d. one Geographic differences from schools financial differences just interest in general And so i think you'll see a shia that that's when when he says you know a governance structure change I think that's what he's meaning an and that's what again the rumblings have been for a while that you'll see more autonomy given to the power five conferences and just more power and authority given to each conference to to kind of make his own rules which we've seen the last year. That's been the case anyhow. I was gonna say they're already doing it in delhi. So if i'm talking. If you and i are having a bourbon neat five years from now is it more likely that we're talking about. Hey every conference is on its own with its own rules or there's this new fan dangled football federation that that covers. You know power five. Plus a couple of group of five conferences kind of power football federation type.

"A year when it finally finally happens for georgia. What i've told people 'cause everywhere. I go get it. I get asked the same question. Is george going to finally do it. And my mom position is. They're good enough to do. Their georgia is good enough talented enough to win every single game. They play will they. We don't know but they've got their quarterback now and jt. Dan they've got a deep running back roster And they they have they. I started saying the free agent market. I should say the transfer portal. They've been able to pick make some pickups he's going to strengthen their teams particularly in the secondary. So you know it's going to be fascinating to watch. The georgia play clemson in charlotte opened the season. And if georgia wins that game. I think absolutely good enough to run the table. And this will see how they do when they get to atlanta and they play alabama. We just somehow always skip right ahead. but in reality. I don't know how you can't though in antonio let's stay in the sec for a second I i i can you. Could you really make a compelling argument for anyone other than georgia not really. No not the sec east. I think the big fight. It's going to be who's who's gonna finish suck isn't going to be florida. Is it going to be missouri. Is it going to be kentucky. You know florida's got a lottery to do. And you've got approved new that emory jones can be an every down quarterback If he can then. I think the gators a bit from a consumer tear shares talent standpoint. I do not see another teen challenge georgia in the east and it's almost become a cliche to talk about the west but let's move alabama off the the centerpiece for a second is it an at lsu What happens in the west right now of saying Some of my friends are telling me that. Lsu is gonna bounce back and you know. Miles running amax johnson. Regardless place quarterback you know lsu is going to have to prove prove it to me after watching them last year so so right now even though jimbo fisher is going to have a new quarterback I like i like the aggies. I think they've recruited well since he's been there they've got some death If they could find a couple of places Fixed couple of places in the offensive line. I think they're going to be a very good team. Tony new coaches across the board for and when you start adding up to the league you know enormous number of new coaches so i ask you in terms of being concerned tennessee. South carolina auburn. There are a lot of places that people are really unsure about right. Now i mean we. There's always hype with a new coach. But all of those three programs Which one are you most concerned about. Moving forward well. I'm concerned about south carolina and their and their roster I think. I think Shane beamer has got a lot of work to do there. They they've got a proved the roster significantly looks like loop. Doty's gonna end up in the quarterback when all said and done. I like both south carolina. Tennessee have a lot of work to do. We know what jaws hypo wants to do offensively. The question is is the quarterback in that room who can execute his office. And i think that's yet to be proven and on. Brian carson optimism go. We talked to a writer the other day who spent a lot of time talking about what a great developer of talent he is. But i didn't hear a lot of big commitments heading that way. What would what would you say about auburn taking a completely different approach. Yeah it is a completely different approach. And and i think the big big question for them is going to be can. Can mike bobo develop bo. Nixon to a consistent quarterback bo bo. Knicks is obviously talented quarterback. But he hasn't been a consistent quarterback if they can do that Then i think all we can have a pretty decent season. But i think there's i think there's a lot of work to do there but it all in the game the way clay today call. You can no longer be average at quarterback you have to be elite and look at look at what all the elite teams have in common. They're not average a quarterback. So can mike. Bobo develop bo nixon to an elite quarterback or certainly wanted us a lot more consistent and finally tony between the two of us. We've covered about five hundred years of sec football And i'm curious because you know we we we us. We missed last season. I no. I know it was play. I know there were fans got to go to the games. But it wasn't the same in this year will be in your life to steal a phrase from burn. Line quest How excited are you for this upcoming year. I've been doing this a long long time. And i can't remember being more excited about a season than this because last year i think the word is surreal last year. I mean it happened the. Sec deserves a tremendous amount of credit for playing all the games that they did last year and yet another national championship but it was just strange going through it and i run into more and more people who were so excited about getting back in the stadium Talked a lot of people are going to charlotte for georgia clemson. Game and so yeah. I'm i'm i'm incredibly excited about this season. I did on me on that. I can't wait can't wait to see you soon. Tony's pencealong thank you so much all right take care one of the best ever not that. He's going anywhere but He certainly deserves his due. Tony barnhart Always fantastic to get his voice on this program. We will take a break. We'll look ahead to tonight's baseball game. Virginia has advanced other. "Arkansas mississippi state in colorado colorado. He knows it cupcake compared to i have to compliment you. You are sounding more and more like a talk show host every day. So i don't i don't know what you were doing but but you gotta use their fifth one before we get a tissue and getting my research met you are The winners and losers. You are the biggest winner degs. I like what you're saying. And i like the new match style. It's putting your enemies to shame. Our next guest has no enemies. See as mr college football he is tony barnhart and it's always a pleasure tiny what what's going on now. How are you Paul i'm doing well Saw god blesses met somebody last week and he said so. This is your slow. Tom year right now then in college football. It's always something and here. We go again. Yeah it should be It's traditionally off season but last year. Tony i thought june may have been one of the busier months with all the speculation about whether we would even have a fall and this year people don't know and i know you of course live in this like Like few do. It's a long way from being over We have a mutual friend of ours today. Who who's somewhat more in the middle of this thing than you are. And i am And he said well. Don't forget we have the lsu next to deal with right. Know between between the the playoff the nfl and the transfer portal. This has got to be the craziest. June we've ever had in the sport and you're he's he's right and i always next and goodness knows how that's gonna work out. Well let me start with what we do know. And how how. We discovered all this as quickly as we did and the fact they confirmed it is it. Is it really unprecedented. But your your first reaction lease on this program to what has been proposed in relation to the cfp. Well it's a game. I heard michael rescues interview with the earlier today and it is a game check. There's no question about it and it's a game changer. If it was a deal that got done paul because it made not only did it. Make michael roscoe happy but it. May greg sankey happy and any kind of deal. That makes both of those folks. Happy is one. That's pretty inspired. Our it was funny about a month and a half ago. I started hearing people say. Because i thought it was going to be eight teams i. I was convinced that eight was the number but then people started talking. Hey tony you know. Don't rule up twelve and you know eight didn't seem to work as well so it wasn't shocked and twelve km but i was a little surprised. Yeah tony. I don't remember who it was. It was on the show talking about twelve and i frankly have to admit. I thought the guy was crazy. It just didn't make any sense but it does now well. It does now because the way paul the way that we're we're used to dealing with these things college athletics move incremental. They don't go big. They rarely undergo big they do. What's the safe knicks. move and they just. They must've decided. Hey it's time to go big or go home and now now that we've had some time to sort arrest on this. It's clear why this happened. It happened because eight was not gonna worked for the. Sec and twelve would was six at large position six at large berths. This is this is something that's going to benefit the sec said Had this been last year last season. The sec very luckily would have gotten four out of the twelve teves in. That's a good. That's a good deal for them. It opens up the door for the group of five michael and and his his folks and so the now now it makes perfect sense. And what does it do tony to the sport that we would both admit. Sadly has been slipping lately. Well what what it does is to give our good friend. Tim brando All the credit he's been harping on this for a long long time that the sport needs to be more inclusive that needs to be more opportunity. Paul the number that kept jumping out at me was this. We've had seven years of the college. Football playoff forbids a year. That's twenty eight. Total bits of those twenty eight total bids. Twenty two of the twenty eight have gone to five schools before that play this year. Plus oklahoma and that ultimately that i was a hardcore fourteen guy for a long long time but after the after the pandemic season and seeing how it played out i said you know what we gotta shake things up a little bit so again i thought it was going to be eight and it turns out to be twelve. But hey it'll be. If we can get started at twenty twenty three it'll be excite tony bar whether it's tony five weeks away from media days and we all know what that means and this is going to be an unprecedented season. So let's let's talk about what you hear on the field. Now you're always in contact with coaches and people that that know what's going on. Let's start with georgia. What were can you tell us about the dogs. And i think i've asked you this for at least thirty years. I missed the first ten. But is this the year Is this the year that we forget about one thousand nine hundred.

"Yeah. I mean, even though there are no criminal charges being pressed. The police report states that he, he struck a woman, and I mean, that's pretty in this day and age. That is very clear black and white, and it's just something you don't do it. There was no place for that in society alone and more specifically on the torture football team. Like this is just once it got out that this is something that he did, regardless of whether or not the recruit all criminal charges against him. It's just it's an untenable situation, O'Connor a on what had seemingly been a very quiet afternoon relation to college football that has now changed. I know you're busy, you appreciate you coming on. Very short notice. Thank you for sharing the information. Plus I thank you fall cry to rally you heard what he said there. This is a big deal. And you're talking about a team that lost a lot in that position players coming out. So that will be one. We'll be watching very closely over these next three or four weeks before media days. And then ultimately the start of summer workouts listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Then a very busy show. We had grant Williams on a couple of hours ago and it seemed like the NBA draft might carry the day, but things have changed in the last hour. With reports. Georgia is now confirming that you're a mile Holman Haldeman is off the team. This is a report that came out it came out about an hour ago that the leading wide receiver remember Georgia has lost a bevy of wide receivers to the draft in to graduation. His is off the team after an assault allegation. We have been trying to grab as much information as possible. So they. Breaking story on a Friday afternoon in the summertime. A lot of people long gone. But fortunately, we found someone can maybe give us some more perspective on this story, and this Mr. college football, Tony Barnhart, who. Follows that program very very closely and perhaps can help us better understand from a national standpoint what it means. Tony, thank you very much for joining us. It's always a pleasure. So we none of us know a lot other than that Georgia has apparently confirming that Holloman is gone. Good afternoon. And what does it all mean? Well, what, what it all means. Paul is everybody that follows Georgia knows that wide receiver was the most was the hardest hit position that position where they had the most question marks and Halloween was a guy after catching twenty four passes last year. They're they pretty much expected him to step up and be to go to receiver certainly one of them. And so they've got some freshmen coming in. They've got meet Robertson transports cow last year and didn't really meet expectations. But he's, he's talented. So now this just puts a big question Mark at position. That already had quest- marks. And it's just and it's not a great look in June. That's it's a long time to practice, but I promise you that this is not how the fans wanted to spend there's Friday, the last Friday afternoon or the end of June. They did not want to hear this. No. And you know about this point next week. We're moving into the fourth of July week and, and a lot of people are moving into that state of mind. Already in Tony. Listen, Georgia fans pretty optimistic we know about the talent and, and I don't think anyone is suggesting, this is the end of the world. But I it just for some reason has sent quite a chill across the nation today. And I'm looking into you to try to help explain that is it is it just the fact that Georgia is week at that position because they're strong it almost every other one. You know, Paul, when when you sit your situation live, Georgia in Georgia's, like and everybody's top three top four a team that when you look at all the magazines, they are expected to, to make the college football playoff when something like this happens..

"Call back pre shit. All right. Thanks, Don cruciate. All right. Let's go to Ricky in Tennessee. Ricky. Tony Barnhart here. How are you? And big follower. But thank you. I'd like say go vol's number one number two, I have a quick question, though. You're wanting to go to break on this portal thing. Why could they not have one or two people from each conference? And whenever somebody came up from whichever conference those people would be like couldn't vote on outcome of everything. Would that not be a fair way to do thing? You mean have people from each school Votto, weather, not guy can transfer know have a have site one or two people from each conference? And if somebody from the SEC wanted to transfer to the ACC, though would be exempt from voting on that come of it. Yeah. I don't know Ricky, I understand where you're coming from, but the reality of the situation and the reality, we all going to all going to have to face is that we are not going to do anything moving forward. That restricts the freedom that the players have gotten. Okay. And the coach will tell you that they're not gonna they're not gonna say it out loud in front of everybody. But the fact is, they know they know the portals hitter, stay, they know it's not going anywhere. What, what, what the people who manage the game have got to do is to keep the players with this kind of freedom. Maybe create a rule with everybody gets one free transfer, and they don't have to sit out and then that's it, but you're not going to do anything that's going to really restrict the players freedom at this point. And they've they've gone too far down the road. I understand what you're saying. Thank you so much for taking my call, and go Rawls. All right. Ricky, I appreciate that. We probably can take one more before break. Let's go to Harry in New Orleans, Harry, I've got about about two minutes. Okay. Thank it's only always great to see you on. Thank you. Totally just quick comments and like get your pain on this. I I'm also someone was blessed to watch coach color when he played for the Packers most of his games, and I find it incredible lay on life when he became a head coach and even through today. He so eloquent and soft-spoken. I is an incredible could be so to nation vicious on a football field and be such an eloquent leader of men after that. Yes. And that's and that's what makes him special and trust me when it came to disappointing his players and do what doing what needed to be done as a coach. He was. No, he was no soft, touch you can you can talk has players and said, you did not wanna make coach curry man. But he also I'm curious. When you hear the on zip is fine. These such an eloquent, soft-spoken gentleman, and he he's to be commended. And I'm sure he'll go on and history to be one of the great. But last thing I had told me, I hate to be critical. But I just can't seem to buy into this fall quarterback. What, what am I saying that nobody else seems to see well, Harry, I it's, it's all relative. And thank you for calling. I've got to scoot here break. Thank you. Think about Philippi, Franks, is that we, we all knew he had a great arm. We all knew the potential. He's very athletic. The question is could somebody come in and teach him the nuances of the position. And frankly Mullen, Dan, is one of the best quarterback coaches out that you seen what he did. You saw what he did would deck Prescott. You've seen him develop guys for the NFL, and he just I thought it did a remarkable job with Philippa Franks. So there you go. Hey, we're gonna take a break. We come back. We're here to take your calls at eight. Eight five five two four to seven to eight five. This is Tony sitting in for Paul..

"What I'm looking at, you know, compared to what they were last year. I mean how why do you what do you think about my God? I, I think it's a couple couple of couple of things one you start with the quarterback. Okay. Everybody loves a quarterback in the should this kids and apps. Trevor nights and incredible football player and he's just he's just a sophomore. He's just he's a baby just learning how to play. The position. That's number one number two. Yes. You lost. All those great guys on the defensive lines, one of the best defensive lines. We've seen in a long, long time, but Clemson has recruited exceedingly. Well, so that's, that's they've got now do they have guys as good as the guys they lost. No. But they got good guys. Okay. And that's the thing they, they don't have bad players. They have good players that they're going to develop into great players, like the that's number three is they sit there and they look at that schedule, you You know, know. look at the ACC who in the scares you all right? Does anybody in the ACC scare Clemson? I don't think so they got Texas am coming to their place. But I, I don't know the Texas thing and it can go in there and win. Although we had a caller earlier, who said that they could. So I think when you put it together, you put it to you put travel, orange together travel arts. You put the schedule, you put you put the fact that they've recruited exceedingly, well the last four or five years, under dabble Swinney. But mostly the schedule who the question is who's going to beat them, who, who get going to be Clemson? The biggest thing I look in that is, you know, they're going to win. Maybe forty two thirty instead of forty two ten. Yeah. But you know what? A winning. It doesn't matter if it's ten to nine okay as long as you went all the games and you get to the play offs. And then we'll find out how good they really are. So we'll say, hey, listen. I gotta run. Thanks for calling appreciate it. Okay. Call us next out. All right. We need to take a break. We've got Mike Griffith of dog nation dot com. Coming up, he had a chance to sit down with David Pollack and we're going to talk about the dogs and we're gonna talk about the transfer portal. "To take your calls. Tony Barnhart sitting in for Paul mom. We're here to take your calls at eight five five two four to seven to eight five. Why don't we take a call right now? Let's go to Doty in Montgomery, Alabama, Doty. I'm going to be speaking in Montgomery later on this year. Looking forward to it. Man. This is it's honor, man. I call a longtime listening, thanks for calling. What's what you got any might? So I'm just kinda of want to speak on the transfer Bordeaux man. I just think it's, it's getting out of hand and it all started with a Justin fields of who I'm a big Georgia fan, and I love me some Justin fields and me personally, I feel like he was the better competition. But that's another discussion. But I feel like he started in his it is just spiraled out of control. Because Luke forward is a really great kid who deserves to play. So I know I I'm with you Dody. Here's the thing. Look forward obviously didn't see an opportunity for him to play at Georgia. Georgia's got a you know, a bunch of bunch of good players at that tight end position. He wanted to go to Illinois, his, he talked about an ailing grandfather, but, you know, the incidentally rule will your grandfather's not part of your immediate nuclear family, which I don't quite understand what that means. And then they talk about the fact that it's not within one hundred miles of your home. And I I'm with you, as soon as Justin fields, got his waiver to play right away. And then take Martell says, will I'm I'm leaving house native. Justin feels is coming here to play. I'm going to go to Miami. And they granted him away ver I think they just opened the floodgates where everybody says, well, those two guys can get away. I know I can get. Waiver? I will come up with something that will work. And then now all of a sudden they're, they're backing off on it not so that, that, that's why I think the thing is so messed up. I just I just think there's something needs to happen, where it is treated fairly for these kids being able to play or not, like, because I, I look back at the eastern situation which kid with a tremendous talent. He had to sit out a year which I wasn't too excited about seeing him leave either. But, you know being Georgia man, I'm a big go dogs fan. You graduate of Georgia precinct. You miss the college football for taking my call. All right. Not thanks for calling. I appreciate it. Let's go to max in Rochester, New York. Max is Tony Barnhart. How are you? Right. Tony. Thanks for taking my call. Her big for the Gators fan just was wondering when the next possible time, we might be competing for full championship, or maybe even college football playoff. I know Dan Mon did a great job in year one. He did just wondering, what's, maybe in the future. Well max, it's as it to, quote, another coach in another division of the SEC. It's a process. Okay. And what Dan Mullins got to do? It's, it's one thing for him to come in re in rebuild that program and rebuild the talent base, which he needs to do. They recruited a top ten class so that so that's good. But you can't ignore the fact that they're in the same division with Georgia. And Georgia is having a lot of success in recruiting right now. So what you've got to do is you got to do two things you've got to recruit. Well, and you've got to develop your players where you got developed the ones you do get who. Maybe they aren't five stars but they're, they're really good players. And you've got an I think, Dan Mullen is extr. Stream Lee good at that. If you watch what you look what he did at Mississippi State, the Mississippi State, that's strictly a developmental program. He will tell you that they didn't get a bunch of five stars at Mississippi State rarely did they get a five star at Mississippi State, but they got guys who good players, and they develop them same thing at Florida. They're gonna they're going to get more high level players to Florida, but the other guys they've got to develop and it's going to take time. I don't I don't think it's this year, but I think over time. Dan Mullen has the now. We'll do it. We'll, we'll Georgia keep recruiting at the same level. They're recruiting at right now, if they do then that, that makes the period of time to.

"Win the east. Absolutely not. That's just my personal opinion. And could you expound the what happened to Florida last week? I'm in the dark here now. Okay. Well, first of all can joy, you say is can Florida win the SEC. She said, no. I assume that's because even if they beat Georgia. They're gonna lose somewhere else along the way to maybe to an Auburn or an LSU or something lies a seven day. Yeah. They would have to lose two games. But I believe they will do that. You know? I I I don't think they'll be Georgia. But they certainly can you know to say they can't beat them as ridiculous. Of course, you know, absolute. Now you ask about what happened last week? A couple of things have happened at Florida one a four star quarterback. Jalen Jones who. Basically fourth on the depth chart. Ran ran into some issues on campus. They were charges they were charges made against that. Were there were accusations made against him. Let's be clear on this. They're accurate sections made against him from a legal standpoint. There were no charges file. Okay. But Jalen Jones has left school. He's in the transfer portal. He's looking to change the other issue. And this is the breaking news that happened earlier today, Chris Steele, perhaps the most highly rated player in their signing class who were enrolled in school early has put himself in the transfer portal and announced today that he is headed to the university of Oregon. So that's that's a double whammy for Florida. And it's not it's not what you wanna hear this time of year. But my opinion is these things are going to happen at every school is just happened. It happened at Florida last week, Florida and Georgia fans have been going at each other. So that that made it a pretty big headline. But that's what happened. Yeah. All right. Appreciate it. Tony. Okay. Thanks. All right. We've got about one about two and a half minutes. Let's go to read. Let's go to read in South Carolina read, I've got a little bit under two minutes. What can I do for you? Yes, sir. Just wanted to know. I know football teams, I think no football teams when they made it to bowl games before the playoff system. Boy, understand it. There was monies for to go into that bone. And my question is is it still that way? And do other sports have anything like that. I'm myself oversaw all three and I was just one. Is there any of money when they get up to like the world Humes? All right. You know? I don't I don't know what they do what they do for players who go to bowl games and they've done this for a long time as every player gets a gift. I think the rule the the bowl gives them a gift. And I think the school gives them a gift, I think. I don't know if it's changed or not. But the limit on it used to be about six hundred dollars, and basically they would give guys gift certificates and travel bags and things of that nature. Another thing that players have been done. They they they're giving travel expenses, and sometimes guys will will car pool together to a ball if it's a drivable distance, and they would pocket a little bit of money that way. But yeah, it's. The player at the players will tell you right away. It's not it's not enough. But they do they do get gifts. Now, whether or not you get them at. You give them for a baseball or anything like that. I have absolutely no idea. But it is it has been in the past. They have they have done that. Okay. Okay. Thank you, sir. All right. I appreciate it. All right. We come back. We're going to be taking your calls at eight five five two four to seven to eight five. I it's been a fun day. It really has been and what's interesting about doing this show for Paul is that the time. Just absolutely just just just goes by incredibly. And what I've enjoyed today is the fact that the Georgia and Florida people continue to be in midseason form, it just absolutely blows me away. All right. Don't go away. "This is Tony Barnhart sitting in for Paul finebaum here on the Paul finebaum show. Paul will be back in this chair tomorrow and believe it or not we are halfway home. And we're here to take your calls for the next two hours at eight five five two four to seven to eight five. But before we go, we have breaking news. And it is not good news for the Florida Gators defensive back. Chris Steele five star quarterback has decided he's already decided he is going to the university of Oregon. Now, you remember Chris steals issue? Again, the most one of the most highly rated players in the recruiting class came in early like he was going to play a lot then announced suddenly last week that he was moving to the trans the transfer portal. Why was he leaving for the transfer of Puerto because he was rooming with Jalen Jones four star quarterback who has left the program he requested to be moved out of room being a roommate? Jalen jones. That request was denied. And they said they would take care of it in the fall. So Chris Steele said, you know, what I am outta here. I am I'm not going to do it. And so here's the thing. Here's the story behind all of this, and what has happened because I I get more phone calls and more emails and more text messages in Twitter about the transfer portal. This is why Chris Steele will get a waiver to play at Oregon right away. When after the shape Patterson case at Michigan. They changed the wording on what it took to get a waiver by waiver. I mean, you are allowed to play right away rather than sitting out a year. They changed the language and basically said, it's something beyond the athletes control. If it's something beyond the athletes control and impacts, the well being the wellbeing of that athlete, then they will be granted a waiver wellbeing is a phrase. That's so big you can drive a truck through it. And because of that issue. I will be very surprised if Chris Steele is not granted a waiver. Some that is bad news for the Florida Gators coming out of a week when they've had some bunch of bad news..

"A great fan base with lots of support. I mean, there's going to be so many guys that want this job and ladies at want this job. It's going to be a fascinating process to watch. Yeah. One other thing, I didn't mention when I talked about a jury was the fact that he has experience working with high profile coaches with very strong personalities, and you're certainly going to need somebody that has those qualities and who's done it successfully. So yeah, it's going to be really really interesting. It's going to be a critical higher. They're going to have to get the money, right, obviously. But you know, I to me, and I we've all said it, but to me, Texas AM, they truly are the sleeping giant to me in both football and basketball. And now they got the right guys in there. They're in a position to do a lot of damage. Just gotta make sure you get a guy of in this as e position, you know, that that that works MU. With with those coaches at the revenue sports. I mean, I I have a feeling, you know, they'll they'll come out with a really strong candidate there. But it is going to be really interesting. "Well, thank you Herrell. Appreciate that. Thanks for calling thinking my call couple of things only on the. Fine for route. Or they're not considering whenever transfer. He comes in losing scholarship for two years of ro. I'm not sure what you're asking me Hera. What what's the question again, the NCWA? I think it's considering if you take transfer. Yes. Yes. I know what you're saying that. Yeah. What what what they're considering doing is. If you take a taking a graduate transfer, and that graduate transfer does not get his graduate degree in one year. They're going to count another year. I guess your scholarship Tuttle it ain't gonna pass. Okay. They consider it. But but it's not as not going to pass the smaller the smaller schools who lose invariably lose players to to the power five teams one of this to get past Dennis Dodd this good reporting on this yesterday. But that they are considering that rule Herrell, but based on the reporting we've heard it's not gonna pass. Okay. Well, politics involved anyway. And another thing JIMBO wanted to get out of Florida state because he saw Alabama east coming over there, Flint. Well, it it could have been there's there's no question that that that was wings done an incredible job. And, but you know, but do you really want to jump out of the frying pan? We Clemson to jump into the fire with Alabama and LSU and folks, so so that's that's a nice theory. But I think that's seventy five million dollars hair would probably had a lot more to do with that decision. Don't you? I would imagine it would I was facing that I. Anyway, I agree with you. Then couple years if coach does not get there. What's going to happen? We'd see that coming. Well, you can talk to Texas and people, and they are a little nervous parallel herald to call it. Thanks for taking mccown. Let's take one more call before our break. And let's go to. Adam in Gainesville, Adam it's Tony Barnhart. I've got just a couple of minutes. Don't a real quick item. Brother. I'm doing good. I'm a living Gainesville Florida, but I'm a bulldog, but I've kind of copying off what Martin was talking about a while ago. Georgia has been recruiting their tails off the last three years I've knitting stars on campus of maybe one or two transferred. Yes and fields being one of them. But in my opinion, man, that's what separates Georgia and Florida. Dan got experienced, but man, Kirby smarter every doing everything but win the national championship, you know, just one play away. And I think in three years with the big games that he's coast and he's only getting better. And when you got stars competing with five stars, you're bringing the talent out in those guys on campus. And in my opinion, until Florida starts recruiting Kirby smarts going to have that train rolling. I'm scared of Florida every. A year. If I was a state Georgia going to lose a game that year, I think Florida, but for lucky for us. It's been the last two years Hobart and LSU. Well, here's here's the thing. Adam look, Florida sign a think a top ten class and to me to me if you're in the top seven eight nine, you know depends on how you coach them up. So I I didn't know if they can put together three top ten classes in a row over the next few years. I think they're going to be there. I just think it's it's about coaching players up. I think Georgia's doing a great job, but this year's going to be I think Georgia to get it done this year. It's next year that I really wonder about the gap between Georgia and Florida after the Florida can put together another top five top six up seven recruiting class. I agree. I think that's what separates the coaches between smart and Molin is the experience, but smarts learning quick. And he's doing a good talent. Well, it's like anything else. You got to knock on the door certain number of times their history is full of coaches who got there and got there and got there and finally they break through and look and could Georgia have won the last two games of Alabama..

They're totally lost. And I, you know, and and they're trying to get rid of the two best in the most experienced players. They got on the team. "Finebaum show podcast. Welcome back to the program. Tony barnhart. Joining us always great to welcome in. Tony, tony. I hope the off season even though it's two weeks and three days old has been good to you. Good afternoon. I has been good all good to hear from you. My friend wanna talk about a couple of things, but we were just talking about Alabama. And no you'd have to be in a cave. And I don't think you are to miss what has been going on there since the night of January, seventh your impressions of the exit from Santa Clara and the turmoil on Nick saban's coaching staff. Well, there's no there's no doubt all of us who were there that Alabama got beat by a very better chain better team that was better prepared and it was a thorough defeat. Now since then since we all got back home a lot has changed. But I I would always tell people when they ask about it is be very very wary of underestimating Nick Sabe now the. The change. He's had on his coaching staff. The last two years it has to me it has to catch up with you at some point. But don't take that that loss, and the fact that he's got to change coaches again for the second straight year don't read too much into that. Because I don't I don't think I don't think Nick savings ready to pass the time. Just you know, I I would agree with you, totally Tony. But I would like you to think back as you've watched great coaches over the years, whether it was an Meyer, replacing a lot of coaches at Florida or or Bobby Bowden or someone else for that matter. I realize he's unique. I realize he's the best that's ever been. But we're talking about major major change in in. He's been able to deal with it so far, but what are you watching for in feeling better about Nick Sabin than maybe some people? Well, I think one thing you got to keep in mind that his last four uprooting classes for whatever the rankings the worst, you know, the last four recruiting classes have been one one six and one all right now there's no question that when he came into recruiting this last glass, he went younger on his coaching staff. I think we all understand that. And it may have heard him in the back in the Xs and os. That's why it's so fascinating to me. Some of the guys he's bringing in like a Steve Sarkisian. I've heard you say this, and I agree with that somebody despite what their past was he's comfortable Steve's Archies in those Nick saving Nick Sabin, those steam or keys in and that's the thing. That's fascinating me now. Now, we'll catch up with him yet. But my my my issue would be when does that start to impact recruiting when that starts to happen to me? That's the red flies. You're right, all the great coaches who have who have slipped and fall fallen usually lost a little bit of an edge in recruiting. Let's switch gears. I was reading USA today this morning. There was my old friend. Tony Barnhart talking about the great Georgia running backs and man there have been I don't want to do a Larry Munson here. That's your job. But there have been a few and we will see to next week in the Super Bowl. But you ended up doing a ranking not difficult to pick the best. I think we could all do that. But take us through your process. Well, obviously, well, I got a call from. Oh friend Tom tool. USA today said hey, could you with Sony, Michelle and and? And Todd Gurley in the Super Bowl. Could you do this? And I'm sure I'll be happy to and obviously you start with history books you start with the leading Russia's of all time, and you you betta story template, and you just go down from there. And you know, where do they fit in the grand scheme of things? That's why had Charlie trippy at number two. I mean, I I talked to a lot of people about Charlie tripping over the years for a couple of my books, and this guy, you know, he's into college football hall of fame. The pro football hall of fame finished second Heisman Trophy. And so I felt good about putting him number two. Then after that..

"tony barnhart" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show
