How Big Will the Hamilton Bump Be?
"You WanNa Talk Hamilton Yeah don't don't don't throw away your shot. Jason's is your. This is your chance. That's nice, so so Hamilton. Was filmed with nearly all of the original Broadway cast of the show back in June, two thousand sixteen. Before they started to depart the show including lin-manuel Miranda's who wrote the book music and lyrics. It was supposed to be a theatrical release last year, but instead of comes to Disney. Last last year is not supposed to be next year. In Twenty, twenty, one. Instead it arrives on Disney, plus on July third just in time for Independence Day hitting its ascension. Sorry bidding. It's very fitting. It is founding fathers and all that. So I I watched it with my wife yesterday. It's essentially the live stage production as you would see in the theater but you obviously the cameras getting close. You can kind of see the facial expressions, and obviously for Disney plus subscribers. It is free as as opposed to the hundreds and hundreds of dollars. You'd have to see Hamilton it's. It's free in the sense. You have to pay for a subscription to Disney plus though. That's true. You have to pay a nominal fee to actually become a member to Disney plus. That's true, so it's only a couple of bucks. Guess. Maybe I don't know. What you're talking about he. Now get mine. Free I don't have that. Disney hookup. Anyway anyway. So the other thing is obviously. There's no actual stage productions of Hamilton happening right now because of the pandemic, so it doubles as a way to get Hamilton to the masses. But also as a way to you know to get Broadway to the masses to get a theatrical production to the masses a at a time when there's no live theater happening right now. So we, we wash at you to keep. You saw Hamilton live right? Yeah, I did I. I saw it, so I saw the opening night of the. La Production. So I never saw the original Broadway cast much to my dismay. And going into the L. A. Show any actually if you google. Google Los Angeles Hamilton Premier. At Billboard Dot Com I wrote a story about it and that night like. Just a couple rows over like Lin Manuel. Miranda was there in. Like. A lot of the sort of original creative forces were there in the audience, and they went up on stage after the cast took their vows and spoke to the audience I went into kind of thinking like Oh my God is GonNa live up to the hype. because. So much has been said about the original. Broadway cast in how amazing they all were, and it's just a revelation and your own. My God in Lake. You kind of felt like you're watching like. They were like they became celebrities. There was no podcast became celebrities and know original broadcast doesn't always stay with a show. Obviously, you usually leave after year so I thought. Are these people really going to be as good as a Ritz broadcast? Even though all had seen at that point was like the Grammy Awards performance and the Tony Awards, performance, which had the original cast I'm like these people are amazing so I see it now like these people are amazing, too. So I just saw like by Gosh it has it. Has I think it has obviously? It's a lot of just like the music. Music and the lyrics, and the story in the staging enemy just found amazing talent to sing and dance and act, and so anyone's who've been anyone. It's been fortunate enough to see the show at all has seen an amazing experience, but there have been tons and tons of people that never got to see the original Broadway cast, which is why it's so great that Disney plus did this and you are actually you know. People were actually able to see the Broadway cast broadcast. Yeah, I think it works in both in both instances for for people who have either never seen Hamilton or people who have seen other iterations of Hamilton so for for me I'd never seen the play all I've never seen a production of the play and I you know you you think about whether it. If I get to see it in in on Disney plus if I'm GonNa, WanNa see it live, but it's almost like buying an album and first of all. I thought it was tremendous. It really does kind of live up to the hype, and it's just such an impressive story but it's almost like buying an album watching it at home versus going to a concert where it's you know. Know seeing it live I can only imagine it being so enveloping that even after seeing it on Disney plus I kinda WanNa see live now so i. mean I I think that it works in in that regard, and then in the other regard. Might my parents actually saw Hamilton on Broadway in February this past February for my dad's birthday. They went, and you know they now they get to see obviously. The most of the original cast had gone, but now they get to watch the Disney plus version so so they can see the original cast performance, and see the close up speaking, which is not nothing because you know they had You know I think they have like knows we see yeah. And host, but really far yeah. look at that, but you know you. You're even the even the cheapest seats to see Hamilton and Broadway hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of dollars And now they get to see you know lin-manuel, unless the ONUM and V digs all all of them. Being Jonathan. Yeah it's friend of the PIE. Ask Jonathan Groff friend of the podcast John Draft. Who was who was hilarious. He spits a lot anyway.

No yeah yeah yeah yeah. This is a rough business richer. You've survived and thrived and been refreshingly refreshingly surprisingly normal well thank you. I suppose that's true right before i met. You're right around the time of jersey shores ago. You wrote an article that i'm gonna screw. What was the title the title says it all which the article about applying for a job oh no it was just just to tweet one like semi semi viral tweet it was. I have a job interview tomorrow for a temp job packaging human breast milk. I also have a tony award yeah and then the job interview got cancelled so i didn't even have the job and packaged up that arrest..

"And one of the really, really big standout songs my theory, I will bet you five dollars that was intended to be the cold open of the show now against the wall in his stall scroll through Twitter on my phone. Say cordons time bliss. Why CVS cat? Get Neil Patrick Harris. Just James the bathroom James pattern that. And that when be more chill, which was expected to be pretty heavily nominated only got the one nomination. They had two quick punt it into the middle of the telecast, and start with a much more misshapen number that they had to kind of slap together, that is my theory, interesting there, because my thought about the opening number, and this will sort of transition into talking a little bit about the James corden hosting is the opening number to me looked like it was in under considered, and then ultimately very derivative. Riff on the Neil Patrick Harris, twenty thirteen opening number that people still talk about and love it was by the end, choreographed very similarly, very similar feel to it, quick, encounters with the cast of current musicals on the stage when they sort of shuffle-off people coming down the aisles it really looked very similar. So it'd be interesting. The key difference between it and the NPA. Number is tuneless nece to listeners, and there was nothing. There was just no melody did not care for the song, and we should mention trae was talking about that playwrights and they have struggled so much over the years trying to get plays makes lands from you. There is no good way to present the straight play on the Tony awards. They still haven't cracked they sure have not when they announced that what they're going to do is have the playwrights come out one at a time kind of give us your elevator pitch on your, and they bring out the guy from the Ferryman, who proceeds to be like, wow, I'm just going to do what I want. I'd like to thank my wife, so couple of them turned into kind of almost like acceptance speeches and it was very odd. I gotta say, Heidi Schreck who wrote and starred in what the constitution means to me hit the sweet spot because she took probably twenty seconds of her autobiographical monologue from the play and then turned away from that and may. At the moment, personal and in the moment, and it was just beautiful. Tell that it wasn't a format that was working because Torralba mcrainey, who wrote gorba-, who wrote choirboy and also wrote the play that became moonlight a while ago. A really compelling guy, and compelling speaker and it still there is such a contrast between he spoke. And then they showed the performance of the song that is part of choirboy. And that was extremely all of a sudden it was like, oh, that would make me go see that sold tickets to a show that sadly, has already closed should have. Yeah. Sure. And you mentioned trae that, that it's seeing that kind of classroom. Full of boys with some stuff that was kind of reminiscent of step dancing. We'll they sit in the setup that this is the queer show that we, we need right now to tell the story. And yes, the step dancing thing, coming in a year, when beyond say dropped homecoming, it was another nice opportunity to appreciate that culture end for people in that world to see themselves in a show that frequently extremely pale and ally. Glenn mentioned alley Stricker talked about representation, she's the first Tony performer to win who uses a wheelchair Rachel chapter and talked about representation among director. So obviously, I think that was at the as well. So, yeah, I mean, I think it was it was an interesting show. The Tony's like any award show. Maybe even more than any word show, you always do have your little who knew..

"I'm not even considered. I got it. It's fine, whatever. So I'm doing for these TV shows put myself on tape, flamboyantly dot dot dot, do my thing. And then I'd get notes back or feedback back. No callback just dismissed to plant buoyant. You can imagine how crazy making that. Right. So I had I had had it. I was in Huntington theatre. I was directing topdog underdog. I with writing I had won a Tony award in a Grammy award. Like all of this stuff. And yet and still every frigging audition that I was having for film and television was a dismissal and outright dismissal. Too much to flamboyant and literally was driving pulled the car over to the fat of the road had a meltdown with my sister on the phone meltdown. Not doing that. That I do this. I'm just gonna you know, I'm just going to write and it makes me so much happier. I'm going to be a direct like that thing. But more. The next morning. I get the call for posed. And I'm like. I'm just looking at God. I'm like, whatever we call it. You know what I mean? I don't know what believe anymore like some higher power something somewhere. What what in the hill? So I'm like, okay. All right. I feed you think you've universe. And so then I get the script and it's for the dates teacher. Because at that time. There was not even the part of an MC was the MC was in the script. He was called MC at five lines. So there's nothing. So there was no part. Right. Right. So and the role of the dance teacher who you will now see woman. Yes, that's great. So now that I'm a Tony award winner. Now that I'm in my mid forties now that I have a Grammy, and Tony and people sort of respect me, I can speak up without being labeled difficult. I could speak up. So I went I did the in as the dance teacher. And then I to Alexa, Fogel who I love so much. I was like okay girl lifting the casting chasms say, okay. I just have to say this. I'm not trying to overstep any bounce..

"I'm so glad I gave it a shot. One of my cousins is a gifted musician. And he's also very very bright guy. He said I am going to give myself a shot to play jazz music and do it for the rest of my life. But I'm going to do it in my twenties. And when I hit thirty if I'm where I wanna be that I'm going to continue. And if I'm not I wanna go back and fall back into finance, and he actually ended up becoming a banker and his very happy guy. But he's so thrilled to give himself that chance to experience chasing his dream. All right. So we've got I've got this vision of myself. I'm I'm gonna win an e got the next December gonna get an EMMY Grammy Oscar and a Tony award. Now, what this is gonna be exciting. It's been nice again to do that. Yeah. That's my question. How do we now that we've got the vision? What do we do? Sure. So you look back from twenty years in the future. And you you ask yourself is there a path I need to go down. Great. And then you say as you just said you set the goal. I want to win the full e got fantastic go for the stars. Now, you say so given the trajectory on is it possible is it likely that I'm doing the right things? Am I involved in music involved in theater, you know, all the things that you would need to do to be able to qualify for those different awards. And if so then you say, okay, what do I need to lean into and kind of give more energy to sue kind of? If you think about a car, where do I need to give it more gas or where I gosh, I'm spending all my time on my music. But what I realize is that's not giving me a chance to audition for the film roles. I. Being in New York and being in the theater. So you have to decide how you a portion that energy..

Tired of wearing grey genes. Like at this point. No because I. Jeans. I I've told you about how whenever I worked president social security where I walked it. I was doing bomb-sweeps and Billy Joel Bruce Springsteen was there I walked into Bruce Springsteen's dressing room, and he's standing there. And the first thing that I think of is this dude been wearing grey jeans like every day for like thirty five years, basically like Trenton khakis, but it's great jeans. Well, he can't because he doesn't have to worry about period Tuesday ever. He can wear those lighter color, nicer jeans. That's true. He's great. I think it's brilliant disguise that he just he just looks like he doesn't care. But in the end of the day, we're all dancing in the dark Chaffetz Roger Stanton. All god. Don't do this. I think it's because we have the day before we're supposed to have off. So I basically kind of mailed it in today a little bit just wrote some real shitty blogs, nothing. Good at all to some real shit. Put it out there. Just to get some clicks going wrote, probably the worst blogs I've ever written today. It's fine. A couple of peoples. These are funny. I don't know about that. But I had a good day because it was lovely here. It was sixty five degrees and sunny, and you know, my puppy Gus loves it when it sunny, so my wife has been working from home lately. She's usually upstairs working I'm in my office by office. I usually been I lay in bed all day to the point where my mattresses essentially formed a canoe around my body. We're just completely gone Simpson groove. Yeah. Right. So I was hanging out in there. My wife said that she's going to go take Gus for a walk. And she said I'm going to take him for a long walk. I said he is not ready for a long walk. He will not do because he's a laziest puppy over.
