"I like making comments sometimes. We don't. I mean, they're complimentary. And we are big fans of yours. Yes. I'm gushing. But I do have a question about I'll just cut time off. I do have a question about boba bob studios. And am I saying that? It's going to head. So this studio is formed by a lot of past Pixar Friends. I would imagine, right? They're Friends of yours. And they were started as a VR studio. They've done a lot of shorts, right? And do you have intentions of working with them again and how did that first connection to do namu through boba bob happened? How did this come to fruition? First of all, totally yes. I mean, even tonko house or bail bob, like what I'm so grateful for is that we are all Friends first, you know? So it's not like we are employee or contracted director. It's not like that relationship. Of course, when it comes to work, we all have to go through that headache, logic, but a core we are all great friends who just love to support each other's vision. So, yes, why not? Myself, you're already always talking, even tongues, too. We always talk as a matter of fact. I also just finished directing one couple of episodes from new Tong calls project, Netflix series that's going to come out next year. So exciting. It's very right now I feel like the one of the things I shifted myself is that I'm not belong to any place, but I'm more like a freelancer now. So which is nice, you know, so that I can reach out to more variety of partners in a little feel a little more free to use different mediums or different ways to storytell, you know? I love hearing this because I thought you were a partner baobab. So about. I think I'm set it right to you. There you go. Yeah. So anyway, I thought you were a partner in that because here's the box I'm putting you in. And I'll be honest about this. I'm saying, oh, okay, he's an entrepreneur. But I don't think you are. Everything you're saying is what you're saying is, again, keeping yourself independent. No, you're just an artist. You're an artist, and that's what's first for you. It's not about business, and structure and all that. You're all about how the best way for me to tell this story. And that's a real rarity. And I would say our animation industry in general, again, is this just goes back to your fine art background. This has been a part of you, right? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I think so. Yeah, even the reason why I went to find our school was based on that philosophy, my own outlook on life, I guess. I'll look on art, you know. So of course, even before fine art, I grew up as a huge animation fan, but still I want to learn more about overall art, visual art, you know, so I think animation, whatever the visual, the fundamentally there got to be fine art. So that is why I went there. I'm grateful for it, because that again carve who I am like this way and I hope what our listeners are hearing in this too that a part of your story is that you made really good friends that are also similar to you different, maybe more entrepreneurial. We'll say, because they starting companies and things. But they have the same kind of passions and level of passion. And by the way, huge blessing to have that in your life. That's very rare to find those people that you are at least peers with or look up to, but somewhere in there. And they have those same things. And so because you have this sweet deal now where you can jump around. And they know you're out there and they can tap you and tap me on the shoulder and say, hey, would you be interested in doing this? And they know you well enough to know what they're going to get, of course, and that you'll trust you. And you do them too. And yet there's this amazing freedom. I mean, do you sense that? Have you realized that this does not come along? For most people, this sort of, and again, I went to the listeners. It's relationships. It's all about you found people yeah. That you've created, hopefully, lifetime lifelong relationships. So what does that mean to you? I mean, I feel like, again, I don't really again Tom. Thank you for, you know, so I'm really grateful for where I am. And I'm still in the still in the middle of the journey for sure, it's not like I'm there. But I think I do love this lifestyle. And I do understand that this lifestyle may not fit to everybody. Because it is fun, but at the same time, it takes so much responsibility. You are almost on yourself and you have to self motivate all the time. And Tom Tony, you guys mentioned about just to laugh, but a deadline, for example, you know? And there's no such thing in deadline. That's the most biggest risk for the project, I guess. And then yeah. You have to be very self aware, self motivated all the time and if that energy, then this is okay, I guess, not being part of anything that protect you or support you, but the flip side of it is that and everyone is actually supporting you. So that's how I love to see it, you know? So, yeah, I don't know. There's a few ways of looking at that. I think with Tom is going, wow, this is a great place to be is like, you know, but there is another side of that is like, well, you may not feel like you have the security of working at a Pixar or a bigger studio where the paycheck is coming in on a very consistent manner or something. And yet you have the other side, you have a lot of creative freedom and you have friends that want to work with you and will support you and that you don't have that. Maybe you don't have that feeling of being out there alone, you know, where there's a lot of independence, I know when I first left Disney and I was doing my own animation company. There's that feeling of, oh my gosh, I have all this burden and I gotta keep a paycheck coming in and I wish I had you know I wish I would have felt more supported by multiple studios or friends that were like, hey, why don't you come over here and do this? Hey, you know, and then it's about a matter of just managing my time to make sure that I could do those things. But yeah, it does feel like, you know, I think both time and are a little envious. It sounds like because it doesn't sound like you have the best of all worlds where you could go back to a bigger studio if you wanted to probably. And I'm sure even a place like Pixar would invite you back any time because you've already proven yourself there and you have relationships. And yet you have you're out there trailblazing doing all kinds of different things that's smaller independent studios. And really showcasing your voice. And that's something that artists don't get opportunity to do or let's face it. Don't take the opportunity. Don't pursue that. Which goes back to your ambition that I was talking about before. But where do you think that where's that leading thank you, Tom? Where's that leading for you? Is it something that you want to expand into? And we started the podcast wondering this too. You've done a lot of shorts is that kind of a bridge to doing a longer form feature for you someday? Is there a story that you want to tell in feature form or does that even matter?.

"And I mean, I'm just talking from a procedural effort kind of standpoint as an artist. It takes a lot of work to see something an idea from fruition. Even a short, you know, because it is, yeah, shorter time period. But it could take a long time. There's a big process involved. But you have done an incredible amount of shorts. I went to your website, Erica dot com. And I really recommend people check it out too, because you have a plethora of I'm going to say 6. Is it more or less than that? Like, more? 11? Or something? Wow. Yeah, no, it's a ton. And here's the thing is that not only is namu really making waves this year for Oscar nomination, that category. But Eric just last year went to the Oscars with one of his shorts that was nominated for the Academy Award for best animated short. And that was opera, right? For opera. What was that like for you? So you've been putting out shorts for a while and let me back up for the audience too to give them a little bit more context of who you are. You are, you've been a supervising animator, a main animator at Pixar for many years, worked on a lot of shorts through the pixel 6 years. I'm going to say 6 years. Am I right there? Yes. 6.5 years. I mean, you worked on cars too and brave and shorts like monsters university, the Toy Story of terror, home, inside out, Sanjay super team. I love that one. Oh, finding Dory. You did piper with the short Lou the short. So you've worked on a ton of stuff when you're at Pixar. You did the I think it was in Finding Nemo two. The octopus? Yeah, I was an octopus guy. Because when he came on the screen, he stole the show. He did. I remember, oh, let's just geek out for a minute. I love that we're pausing here because I didn't know that. And now I'm like freaking out a little bit, Eric, because I know when I saw that movie. Now, I was in a huge, I'll just be upfront. I was in a huge finding Dory fan of the movie itself. But that octopus, I got so excited as an animator when I saw that thing come to life. And it was so inventive. I was like, how are they doing this in CG animation? This would be hard to do in 2D, but you know you can kind of work things out and get this nice flow and stuff like that. It was so organic and it was so thought out. I had great poses. There was a lot of clarity of action and communicating about how I want to find out. Was it you in a small army doing that? Because was there one animator on every single arm? No, actually I love this pause for the bit of appreciation of octopus Hank. That's his name. Pancake. And then really close. We had a whole army of octopus team basically because we were all terrified, you know, Hank, turned out to be the most expensive character in Pixar history. Why? Yeah, it is the fact record. And the whole team of animators, like a squat, you know, Hank squat from technical engineers to really put birth to this character and the character that really celebrates the actual reality of how octopus moves and breathe and live in the water, or outside the water on top of that we wanted to put this charm emotion on top of the character. So yeah, I spent about almost two years really from the scratch with when I understand first came up with this idea of this Hank, the octopus, again, which terrified all of us had picked up. Oh, yeah. Rightfully so. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow. That is awesome. So not only has Eric done been an all star animator at Pixar for many years, did Hank, one of my all time favorite new favorite Pixar characters. But then you went on to work with taco house. And very well known for the dam keeper that was one of the very first productions that you guys did. You were the animation supervisor, if I understand, right? And then you went on to direct the dam keeper poems. It was called that. And then a bunch of other stuff for them. So you were really integral to Pixar and then also the smaller independent company that made and continues to make a lot of really wonderful things. And then you've kind of branched out on your own. It feels like. Was there a change where you were just like, I wouldn't care about that. Yeah, what made you kind of go into the world of creating your own shorts and is this another stepping stone on a bigger plan to maybe do features or what is this all or is it all going? You know it. So just to so even when I was at Pixar, I was talking about like making the short literally every year, even though it could be just one minute, 5 minute, it doesn't matter. Just doing keep on doing what I love was besides what I do at Pixar was really important to me, you know? And then that actually opened the door naturally because when Dyson Robert, the founder of tonko house, all the Pixar Xbox or friends and a day left uncle a year ahead of me to found the studio tonko house and because they knew that I have this hunger and thirst to tell my own story..

"Yes so so. It's kinda like you see. Yeah you see an outline like a cigarette outline of something that like an energy. That's there and it shows you like an outline of what they're doing is sometimes glitches in a kind of weird yes. It's using the exit. Connect the yeah. Yeah so you know it shows. The outline of was kind of go is really creepy man. It's really weird because like you sit there and you see a chair that's empty and there's somebody obviously sitting in a chair right there and you're like wait. Can you raise your right hand up. But no razor frigging right hand and you're like holy shit just happened you know. That's really cool. But that's what happened here. It started not only when i washed on the s. l. s. like seeing it. Actually do this. Based on what i was saying. This like spirit got up on this table about two or three feet away from me and it started dancing. And the feeling that i bought was so all encompassing an overwhelming. Like i bought this huge sense of happiness and like seventy and so. It wasn't even about the equipment for me anymore. It was about what. I was feeling in that moment and when i experienced that it was funny. 'cause they were like hey. Can we calm down. I'm like no. I feel amazing right now. It would dance and like come up close to me and then we were playing around. Also i just go by what feel but i feel like for new people. Anybody that's looking to explore this and everything easy for us to say. We had all the equipment we were there. We were a little bit of experience with all of this stuff but anybody can do this but be garden. Keep an open minds. Lead with compassion. I think practice meditation. We got a lot of really good stuff right after we met on the show and eight. But that's okay. That's okay got a couple more questions for both of you and dallas. We what do you guys do for protection as far as when you enter into an investigation and or maybe just might be an investigation on your own someplace what you guys do for protection the essence of what. You're going through where you're going because a lot of people have questions about that as far as how do i not bring something back with me is a very a very likely scenario. In some cases. I know jones has had it. I've listened to his stories. He went to bobby mack. And it's blood is crazy cemeteries cemetaries things off you actually feel and you have an association not only with with what's happening there at that time but at the first of the investigation. How you guys feel about protection and what you do during the day and night essence leading up to that investigation for me just like i said earlier. I've always been really connected to my spirituality. Whatever that being looked like at the time and so knowing that and then also knowing like i'm alive will stronger. I feel you know lavar. I mean you can make across the room but like you no. I'm joking but it. Is that confidence that that when you go into it knowing that i've spent a lot of work on my own spirituality in Vides i i don't meditate in the traditional sense where i listened to own music and do sound baths and shut my brain off or whatever light. That's easy for me. I have like eighty light. Tonko little no no. Don't go what are you doing here forms. I think there's so many different forms of meditation. People get scared of like. Oh well i'm not that religious. So maybe i would bring something back or like. Oh i'm not I don't meditate very often. But like i kind of have been neither one of those things. Either you know. And like. I've i've had a lot of success with just going into it knowing that like i'm there to do something good to help. Maybe connect with things. That i don't understand but the lead with compassion. Go go into those investigations with the intent and like a really good intention on or try hell ethic. You have to be really careful with meditation. Because there's a fine line between deep meditation and astral projection. You have to be careful. You really careful because you could. You could project somewhere as you know. Once you get deep into meditation right i. It's it's almost as if you'd fall asleep and then start dreaming but you're still awake. It's super weird ashton injection is a really weird thing. And it's it's a really cool thing If you do it right but meditation you have to. You have to be kind of careful with so being protected. Yeah what's up is astral projection like during walking. Is that the same thing. No okay so no. Astral projection is your spirit. Leaving is body in in project fi somewhere else so like your own another rail ear in total different. Dementia like you. You can be on a total different earth plane. Light seen others like multiple earths and and things like that so you could be like invest. Yeah there it goes really really deep man. It's like crazy. You know so. Meditation yoga but meditation meditation could lead to astral projection. If you're not careful because it's it's kind of like it's almost. The same medication is sue. Likes to relax your body and mind as show projectionist to release your body and mind. And if you don't be careful you could cross the two could get kind of weird and kind of scary if you're not used to it or if you if you haven't done projection before it's it's fucking scary gonna lie to us. It's crazy this. It's they're in deep. Thought what is your thought on the astral projection and different spirituality essences saying i wanna go someplace. I know my for myself. I would alone. I never astral by myself because there is so many dimensions in so many Heavenly places so to speak. I guess for lack a word of saying to go. Do it allow like go. Yes in your dreams. This balloon and literally libya. You're doing a spiritual question. The essence of going to another dimension annetta portal so to speak.

I lose one and a half minutes to take long which which is a long by all means stages like sunday when i when i can do my job when i can stay with my mouth feel. I'm i'm where i belong to. And well interesting to hear from genome mater. Meant when i said about his vulnerability is quite rare to hear a writer. Who's in you know fighting for the top ten. Really he's not too far off a top ten position you know from the outside. It looks like he's having a great wealth of writing very strongly but admitted there too. You know almost having a bit of imposter syndrome himself on days wondering whether he really does belong there and it's it's always interesting to hear a writer or any athlete. Admit that i bring the hour. Breida's rich i touch the most them as tendon Get on their nerves. You say you you're famous for daniel. It's great you were able to carve made it open like that. And and let him here. You're gonna hear he can tackle tomorrow. Whatever talking carving things. I've been looking forward to sampling some local cuisine tonight. Oh yeah we got boss. Yeah i'm looking trying these fleming keane says fleming you'll you'll recognize the without flem fleming keenest Very different theories about where the name comes from but they kind of like lonzo. Make mellish flamingos guys. Flamingos have you managed to have any vegetables yet in spain daniel. It's a struggle. it's a real struggle every every day every night. I'm not much fiber not much. I don't know but he's tumbled down bit over the last Three days hasn't he lost a bit of time every day. He did finish today But he is now lying in twenty fifth position and well hopefully he will be able to see it. Through to the end of the welte which reminds me chops. I bumped into matt winston. The it's not for the sms morning and asked him whether today could be another day for michael store at the cycling. Pele will make torah to two stage. Wins already for him and matsuda wing to me and said not today not today this reminded me of how successfully. Dsm employed this strategy of giving giving that right is kind of rest stays in the race in toward franz last year. And then i thought i saw storer coming quite a long way down. Today's i think he'd taken it pretty easy and michael store. I'm pretty sure i'm confident. He's gonna win the stage and he's gonna make three before the end of this sometimes if double stage winners aren't there so far. I mean so. Twelve stages and five of tandem by just five writers. Let's wrap things up for a for tonight. Shall we will reconvene tomorrow. Perhaps a sprint stage tomorrow. Be expecting definitely sprint as champs great. Well looking forward to that and we'll join you again tomorrow evening. Daniel must say enjoyed the fabio. I ru kilometer zero immensely. Mattie trenton who we've spoken about pilot in this episode is excellent and not really talking about some of the pressures facing right is not talking about iras. Well really interesting stuff from him. We'll hear from ira's well toro's climate two zero. I think we'll be am with tim. "That's the key. Toby maybe it's more than one person going in this time. Ooh okay maybe like mixed labyrinth with gooney twelve year old and do they all go different ways like when you go into the oh got the maniac mansion slash day the stalling switching between characters. Okay so one of the things that i absolutely loved about the about the moving labyrinth is that everything is sort of mind. Bendy the so. I think you need the way shadow work and all that sort of stuff. You can never really see that. There's actually an entrance into a separate. Yeah i'd love to play around with like with walls actually exist on year. Well because there was that great scene where it looks like. There's no day but then change perspective and you can see it but if you can really do that well within a game where you have to be looking for you have to know about it. I mean because essentially the texas rendered as either a single tonko that way. You never wanna go. Oh thanks oh god if she went that way she would have gone straight to the castle. God i need to. What's maybe again. It's so fucking great. So okay do we go. Classic point and click thin if we sort of exploring some of this stuff. I do more modern. I kind of like modern point and click like three day rented but i think maybe fixed fixed camera poorly panning camera something. There's going to be a way of being to do it's From a first person view as well so that otherwise they would have seen that. There is actually a wall here that you can go into. It's just yeah. That would definitely make it more difficult doing perspective tricks if they've got full camera control. Essentially i like doing it with a fixed camera or at least like like we control the cameras..

"Wildfire Update on news 93.1 On a FBK crews continue to battle of fast moving 400 acre wildfire in the Wheatland area. Greg Fishman joins us now from the KPK Wildfire desk with the latest kidney. It started as a house fire in a rural neighborhood south of Beale Air Force Base. The house there was destroyed along with some cars and outbuildings. The fire took off into dry brush from there and moved north through oak woodland onto the base itself. 400 acres now 0% contained and an out of breath, Mary Eldridge with Cal Fire says. Flames are burning now in the area of in Tonko and Spence lanes. We have one structure resident that's been destroyed. All the occupants are out. These are like ranch at properties maybe 20 acres peace, and so they were able to defend those structures, and the fire is continuing to move to the north, and it's gotten on the Beale Air Force Base property at this point Yes. So there are some neighborhoods under on bill that remain under mandatory evacuation orders. That's kind of in the southeast corner of Biel evacuation warnings now off the base for Waldo Junction and along Chuck Yeager Road. Those are very sparsely populated areas, but there's a lot of grass and brush for fuel. The Vassar Lake Gate to Biel is closed, with many roads in the area also closed. And there are evacuation centers now for people on base. It's the base gym, the Wheatland community senator sediment that we're going to hear more about that, in just a little bit and for livestock. The Yuba County Posse Arena in Browns Valley is being set up to handle livestock. All right. That's kpk is Greg Fishman and will continue to follow this. Thank you, Greg. And as Cal fire crews continued to battle what they're calling the N Tanko fire there in Woodland, A temporary evacuation center has been set up at the Wheatland Community Center. Here's Russ Brown with the Yuba County's Office of Emergency Services. People are being evacuated to have other support system of another family and friends are Availed themselves of rooms and such, so we don't expect a large crowd there. But if they need things that we water, there'll be a place to rest for a while until they can return to their homes When the all clear is given, Brown says Evacuation orders are always fluid in these types of situations and reminds residents to be prepared to leave their homes. The Wheatland Community Center is located at 101 C Street. More news Now with KFBK is Joe Michaels Idiot Appears politics are changing.

Young Republicans: The new climate activists? Maybe.

"Know the polling says young Republicans want climate action. But it's the public shift from party leaders that I just find hard to believe. The Republicans have ridiculed climate science installed climate action for more than a decade. Do you believe these new messages from party leaders for real yes definitely. I think this is real. The question is to what effect clearly something new is happening. I've had a number of conversations with folks who work on the hill who all say the same thing that Republicans are talking really differently about this issue behind closed doors fewer and fewer of them are rejecting the science. And they're feeling real public pressure to talk about it. We're GONNA hear about why later on in the show and now this is playing out publicly. So you've got Republican leadership saying they're gonNA put together this package of bills to address emissions and there is of course a lot of skepticism which you address but there's no doubt there's a shift happening both in private and in public. Yeah you know. I've got some strong feelings on on this which I'm happy to share. But first let's hear from a reporter. Who spent a lot of time figuring out what's up with? Republicans on the issue of climate. Change Amy harder is a climate and energy reporter with axios. She's been covering the issue for well over a decade at the National Journal Than The Wall Street Journal and now at Axios. She broke the story of the new Republican climate. Push and our co host. Jeff Nesbit sat down with amy to unpack it so it it does feel like there has been a shift. I mean you know you talk to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. He says that he has private conversations with Republican. Senators all the but there's been a public shift for Republicans On climate fairly recently. Are you seeing that in your reporting? Well we're starting to see them. I've described it as coming back in from the cold because this isn't where the Republican Party has always been so you're seeing them number one acknowledge that climate change is a real problem That deserves some sort of response now. There's a huge debate about how big that response should be. But in general You're not seeing comments from lawmakers particularly in the House that are really out there on left field when it comes to the science. I recently sat down with three top. Republicans House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy Congressman Graves of Louisiana. I'm in Congressman Westerman A Republican from Arkansas Ed. There was this interesting Exchange Between Westerman and graves when Western said something that didn't really fit with the scientific consensus of climate change. I immediately saw graves jump in and clarify so. There is a very acute concern within the Republican Party. That at the very least they don't want to fight the science and this is of course a long ways away from where Democrats and a lot of the public and corporations are but nonetheless it is a shift to stop fighting the science. So let's let's let's dive into that a little bit. What's in those new proposals from some of the house? Republicans I would say there's three main components of the Republicans plan which is to be introduced over the coming weeks and months the first one has to do with capturing carbon emissions from variety of sources. So that can be by planting more trees in in theory that would capture more carbon the other tube Parts of this plan include a ramping up clean. Energy Technologies and clean energy technology exports so giving special tax treatment to companies that export clean energy important here to note that the definition of clean energy is of course very much in the eye of the beholder. Republicans are in Wide Agreement. That NATURAL GAS. Which is the cleanest burning fossil fuel but still very much a fossil fuel with the climate impact? That counts is clean energy so expediting pipelines for example to move natural gas as part of their clean energy plan. Which a lot of Democrats and many in environmentalists would take issue with and then the third pillar is actually not directly related to climate change but more focused on plastic pollution And so this would give foreign aid to countries in Asia and Africa which is actually where most of the most polluted rivers are with plastic. The climate angle is that oil natural gas at the bedrock aplastic. So there's that connection So those those are the three main components and I've pressed McCarthy in Western and graves on this asking them if they have some sort of goal reduction goal of emissions at they hope to achieve the the answer to that is no that they sort of reject. This idea graves used the term arbitrary targets. I think most experts say having some sort of goal is good for trying to achieve any sort of outcome. I think time will tell. The devil is in the details to see if they can really say that they'll be any sort of concrete reduction of emissions with these policies. Which is of course the whole goal. So what so? What are you seeing learning behind the scenes that that that might explain? What's driving this chain change? Why is this happening now? I think one really compelling arguments that Republicans are being receptive to. Is this idea of course that it all comes down to politics that they've been given a polling that shows younger. Republican voters are really not liking. How their leaders are disavowing? The science they want their Republican leaders to at the very least acknowledged the science and put forward a range of relatively moderate policies. And so I think that's really driving them and and people often say they're just doing this for political purposes and that seems like a throwaway line but in fact compared to where we were a decade ago. I think it's quite significant. That Republicans see climate has not acting on climate change as a political liability. And that's an incredibly important shifts because the politics do need to shift when it comes to climate change if there's ever going to be big policy so what's what's the reaction to these proposals I within the Republican caucus but then also among their colleagues on the democratic side. Stephanie been all over the map. You have some environmentalists and Democrats that think that this is just another way to deny science another way to keep stonewalling big action and then you have other Democrats. I think con- Congressman. Paul Tonko is a good example Democrat from New York. They see this movement as not enough but definitely better than nothing and a big shift from a few years ago. I interviewed Jason Grandma. The president of the bipartisan Policy Center. Who has been integral in a lot of these debates and while he described the big emphasis on trees as quote aggressive gardening he also applauded the Republicans for making this shift. What Jason Grandma also said is that Democrats environmentalists should not chide these Republicans for not doing enough yet because it's a process and although it certainly not moving fast enough for some for some critics that it's certainly moving so what what is climate looked like as a voting issue in two thousand twenty and beyond and will that have an impact on the Republican. Party's outlook on this issue. So I posted a question recently to Frank Luntz. Many people may know him as Well known Republican pollster so. I posed the question to him about are these Republican policies about trees and plastic and clean energy technologies. Is that going to be enough to convince voters? And he says while trees are great. Voters are going to want more and I'll be interested to see if that's the case. I think you'll have a positive impact from not denying the science but I think as climate change becomes a worse problem. I do think there'll be a call to do more however also note that so far to date. We have not seen voters around the world support big climate policies. And so. That's what I've called the big climate disconnect and. I think that's something that's an open question. Voters say. They're concerned about climate change. But do they really support the big policies? That would actually make a difference and I think the answer to that is is. We don't know
