"You know that I used to love for its variegated sort of silvery and green leaves. kind of almost looks like an IV ish Gr-. vining but low prostrate thing lamb the astrum galley. Dolan Yellow Archangel which you know thirty or more years ago when I planted it, it was like a coveted thing. And now it's on the invasive list in the North West and it's invading into woodland's as the climate warms. In. The Northeast and you're starting to see it on the invasive list in in new areas and so forth and I, have suddenly forty miles of it in my garden because it no longer stays. You know within a reasonable range. So I mean maybe we should I say what's the ground cover and what do we want to use anyway, right Okay The me okay. I. Think a ground cover is a plant that increases in numbers over time but does not run away or spread too fast it's usually we'd suppressing that's what we hope and we have a couple of those. And you think of ground cover is something you can walk on, but there's not a whole lot of plants that will tolerate. Being walked on besides grass lawn but a ground cover is anything that could do what I suggested I. You know spread a bit and suppress weeds and it could be seven feet tall. It can be a big SHRUB and I've seen that. But. I. Guess. What do you think is that just about it? Yeah, and and like what you said you know we think when we hear if you hear the phrase ground cover, you would think, oh, turf can walk on it but there really ain't no such things I mean there are so few things that can tolerate that I mean maybe creeping timing lawn, you could technically walk on but you know really almost none of them so So yeah. So it can be any hide I completely agree it's it's it's maybe a living mulch is. Is the. cloudy a west of landscape designer of fido studios. She says, plants are the MULCH. You know that's one of her key phrases that we need to remember and I think in a way. Like I have a lot of masses of ground cover. Like Geranium Macrocosm, the big route Geranium. Yeah and doesn't seed around doesn't it is rise Amadeus, but the rise zones don't spread sideways underground. It's of like it sounds big route on the surface. So, I find that he's unit, you can just edit it. You can pull out a bunch and throw it away and so forth but it gives you weed suppression that you were talking about right it's it's it's a living mulch It shades the ground under the trees and shrubs. Moishe helps keeps moisture and etcetera etcetera, but it's not so rambunctious that it's troublemaker It won't jump out of where it was where you intended to be. Does that make sense? Yes. There was one plant here. Twenty six years ago that some. People before I bought this place planted and I'm still. I'm still a ratting in this year. It was it was a ground cover this year. I think it almost eight the house. And the it's. Tonia. Oh Yeah Tuna however that Chameleon plant that's a nightmare. That's actually one of the most popular stories on my website ever is one of us visited from Google searches is about can I get? How can I get rid of? You know how can I kill this plant still full fill fold on Mare plant? Yeah. We've mentioned it before it is nightmare plant but but the draining macaroni him by comparison, it only exists in the places I, put it in though I started with a few plants I now have large expanses of it. It means that I don't have to weed. Those beds as often nearly evergreen even here in zone five B and you know it just does a really good We'd suppressing kind of a job. But then there's like the Lambda Strom. which wants to take over the earth and. So. Forth. So then you're you participated in its takeover. Bid And so. There's lots of things and we should say, of course, the disclaimer as ever. What is invasive in one place or becoming invasive is again, the temperature shift the the weather the climate shifts is. Is Not, the same as in another place something may self. So in Georgia that doesn't self so in Michigan and In the neighborhood yeah. Depending on soil types and exactly. There's so many things that you can grow like your angelic. I cannot grow that right for you that. COMES UP YEAH so. So I mean, the classic things that

How to approach mixed planting

"Going to stop with question of the week this week which comes from Jill who says they're an avid outdoor gardner but new to house plants. Well, welcome to the world of into Gardening Jill good to have you on board Jill has what they described as possibly odd scenario. ooh, I do like an odd scenario. Okay. Let's look at the details. Due largely is an ideal candidate to start her own indoor jungle because she has a yawn dying studio because she's got big pans of water steamy throughout the day. It's warm and humid a you thinking I'm thinking listener. Yes. I think Gills GonNA end up with a lot of house applause before long a negative attitude he love that warm. Humid. Environment Jill says that not really knowing much about house plants I partied a prayer plant state plant, and variegated fighters all all in the same large pot. All seem to be happy on putting up new growth but the plant is getting massive. Should I plant them in separate parts or just let them fill on their in? is now an okay time to report or should I wait? Jill is in the northeast. U S Well Jill. What a lovely problem to have. I am all for mixed planting. It's something that comes up now and again in the show, we really should talk more about it because it is a really great way of creating beautiful house plant displays. Now the plans that you're talking about in your particular arrangement, you've got a snake plant science. Very or well a to use the correct genus name although account quite come to terms with that yet APPRAI- plot. So presumably, something from the Miranda, we don't exactly what but I guess actually whichever one it is the answer will be the same and a variegated. Lakers. How will they live together well, obviously for the moment that living together very well because that putting on growth. On the PEP PREP LOT is starting to do its thing get enormous. So what should still do I think in the long term the snake plant of that trio is the planck that may be the least happy with that setup. Snake plants can cope with a huge spectrum of conditions, and that's why they're so popular as houseplants but ideally, they will like slightly free draining potting mix than the other two. On also love a good exposure to full sun I know lots of people suggests snake laws for the deepest shade. But really if you can give him son and a good loss of heat in the summer, he do get much better growth and results and it opens up the possibility that the plants will flower which is. Nice because Sansa very flowers are lovely. I think going into the autumn full for you. Americans out there that it's probably fine to leave the plants as they are for the winter nearly worry really is that you'll need to water the Maranta more than the sense of area would like. It's a tricky one. I would say probably the if if the morente getting really really big, it is worth taking the time now to separate out the plots and Redo the the companion planting thing. But with slightly different combination I would take that sets up apart. The sense of area that would look great with other sons various, you can have a mixed planting various sense varies in the same big part I always think that looks amazing. So you can have one of the tool sense of areas, cylindrical or Tryphosa. And then around it, you can have some the bird's nest types like honey i. so think about that as one option I know probably involves buying more plants or you could just pop the sensor very up separately and when you do that, you can give it a bit of a grittier mix and the other two. Then you'll Miranshah because she could keep those in a mixed planting and replace the sense of area with something like a low growing Tonia or low growing Pyla the heart leaf him united's Ariff. Olea. We could have something like my layer Lebron says trailing pilot tralee on the side of the pot. You may be wondering why I'm recommending during this reporting. Now at the end of the growing season, oftentimes people panic about reporting at this time of year. With? CACTI. I'd be cautious about doing it. You have to report CACTI and succulents. Now then make sure the potting mixes pretty much just slightly as opposed to soaking wet because the plants are going into their dormant period on the whole but I think with most of these plants which are tropical subtropical plants, they're kind of used to growing all year round and right now they will be fine. The one caveat is don't put them into an enormously big apart try to keep the pot size roughly the same. So those route bulls aren't surrounded by a massive swathe of unrooted compost but I think it should be fine. And offsets the risk of the sense of various rotting over the winter because you'll have into water the Miranda more than the sense of various needs. When? You're setting up mixed planting. The main thing to think about is what will go well together. They've obviously got to be it all in the same setting. So cheese plants that all like full sun or like partial shade and also I think about how much moisture they like around the roots. All these things will make the difference between success and failure when it comes to mixed plantings and bear in mind that you know it's not a permanent solution probably once every one or. Two years you'll have to be breaking them up and moving things on some will grow much faster than others. These arrangements don't last forever, but they do look fantastic. So do give it a try and hope Jill that that helps you have some ideas for your particular arrangement. I'd love to see a photo of your yawn studio and all the plants in it because it sounds amazing.

"I'M ALMOST THERE CAN BE A. A third I've just called the name of mine wrong. What was it called ready What's his real name? I'm on my second bid David. Leads you've just opened third Tonia. Catherine. It's an Aq-. It's an Eq-. Right okay. So. Yeah. I'm drinking San Miguel apparently others call semi Guel. Not to worry about three of them. We've just watched the men's singles final. It is the sort of final that makes me feel like I've had about five days. Even if I haven't because it's. A meandering delirious. I don't really know how to sum it up. It was just but. Yeah I'm slightly worried that the match is just a big blur in my mind and I'm going to struggle to talk about what actually happened. I can remember very strongly the feeling of it happening and how I felt watching it. I think that will be etched into my mind forever because it was one of those matches by the end I was just so an egg tense for both players A. But trying to rationalize what happened might be quite a difficult task I think. Is a bit light last year's final when ref on the Dow lead two sets to love and a break. And that looked over and then suddenly it was in a fifth set is it bit lineup? No. I didn't think. It was follow quality I would say. I thought I thought. was really good like the whole time. This one was patchy. But the idea of it being not that interesting because looking like going to be a straight sets win. And then suddenly you don't want the match to end and you wanted to go on forever in that sense, it was similar. But I don't think quality-wise or. Sort of the reasons for why ended up being such a dramatic match were that similar tall I also think that Medvedev's comeback last year was completely unexpected I think again somebody like. Nidal or not somebody like against Nidal, if love down in your first Grand Slam final. Very few people are predicting away back I think even at sets breakdown today. People will. I think most people watching. Were waiting dominate team to wake up and. Waiting for something that felt like, surely, it has to happen surely at some stage today even if it's only. A small research and see and I am a break back pushing the set to a tiebreak. Winning a set. People were waiting to see the real. Dominic team. It felt. It felt like only a matter of time whether he could get it together. In time. Before it was either. But for me, that was quite crucial difference in how this one felt. Lost felt I will remember this match I think in the long run for the final set and for the final set tiebreak but. You can't have that without the other stuff that comes before just two guys. So, let's talk about that talk about the start of the match. And how we it was. It was weird. It was I mean festival Amazon deserve. Totally, different men to the guy who came out against public arena buster looked. Just, totally paralyzed with nerves and unable to play his normal game. He looked free now there for those first two sets, he looked languid he has. He has a languid power. Unlike, anybody else I think when you he said of generates speed of shot whether it's the serve of one hundred and seventy seven miles now or four hundred. That's kind of hit the back fence without you realizing he's actually hit it that hard. I don't think anybody else gives me that. kind of feeling out on the circuit of the moment you can. I can feel the power of everybody else is almost a slight of hand the way he does it, but he was timing the ball way way better and also the intent was there and he was coming into the net I mean the statistics on his net approaches. I think after a sense set in half to gone to the net twenty times. And with some success, he looks uncomfortable at the net, but he was just playing. The odd. So masters using his six foot six inches his wingspan. Great. Get into the net. And Dominic team was absolutely awful.

Healing Yourself and the World with Meditation

"Hi Rebecca. Welcome to the House Meditations podcast. Hello, how are you good? Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come onto the podcast? It's my pleasure. becks as a as a mother of five now a birth Dula and Meditation Yoga Guy You. You teach you write a lot about. Managing the mother lode. In fact, it was the title of one of your books. the motherload, so I'd like to start our conversation there. Okay, about tools. And methods that you teach in these times where? Our anxiety over health, the the the political divine racial tensions are just causing so much stress. And I saw a recent video that you posted Were you spoke about managing our expectations or managing your own expectations? And as this podcast is about meditation about the internal work that we do within the process of Meditation I want to ask you to first define what you mean by. By managing our own expectations. And secondly how we use meditation and contemplation to do that so I'm going to jump right in by making a statement that is incredibly important to me as a teacher as a healer someone who is an activist in the social of political racial justice, arenas citation is a political act so always naming where an idea or a thoughts or a teaching came from so this idea of managing expectations came from one of my teachers. Dr Ron Tonia. Pollens. Who in? A Beautiful Guide for me who I've known for a little while, but has recently become someone I considered to be a mentor, and it was through a personal struggle that she guiding me to manage my own expectations, which is so funny, because I teach about managing stress I, teach about managing like how busy schedules are overwhelmed, but I wasn't really practicing myself for a moment in this in the late so. The So. My practice allays is we'll let me define meditation for you. Really quick is according to me according to sit work as a meditation as a way for me to show up for myself to say hey I. See you. I recognize that you're thinking feeling person who deserves to be heard who deserves to be seen who deserves might time, and it's also a way for me to connect with truth, which is the truth of the moment what is happening energetically for me physically for me and then also what's happening in my environment, so it's really sitting in quiet contemplation for. For the purpose of self reflection, and then also connection, which truth and you know being there, it's a it's an act of self love being there for myself so. When I sit in meditation, it is not to cure anything. It's not to fix anything. It's to communicate with myself so that I can find answers on how to act outside of meditation to find. The cure the remedy or even the method to be able to move through stress and what I had been doing recently was sitting in meditation. Connecting with my truth, and then going out in the world and Practicing something that was outside of my truth, which was trying to change instead of trying to change myself. So I was pro. into this like active space and focused on changing the minds of others. Really investing in the impact of changing others instead of investing in what I can do, and that was leading me to a lot of overwhelmed frustration heartbreak. Really this this deep disappointment, so go back to where you. Can Ask right there. Were you You were deeply disappointed in that? People weren't seeing things the way that you wanted to see them or say things or do things or change in this. In his very divided society that we have right now. Is that all of that? It was this sense of urgency. And not being able to. Not being able to. "Hi, tyler. Hey, yeah. Go ahead. I hate to say this. But I agree with you. I know it's hard. Yeah. Childhood me wants to beat me up right now. But I used to do pretty stupid things the fireworks. Sounds like plenty of people are still doing stupid things. Put a ball rock in your buck. Cheeks have your friend line at. I don't want to answer that I needed. Yeah. It's re- people in a special people are drinking and their lighting off dangerous fireworks. And it's just not good. What I don't understand is people doing it in their own neighborhood. You know, there's a ban in your neighborhood and your lighting them off. Anyway, you you wanna burn your own house down. Do you think that can't happen? Let's go onto thanks Tyler. Let's go to this is Tonia. Hi, Antonia Tonia high. My take on his they should get rid of the aerial. But keep the low ground. One snakes, snakes only. I love snakes. They I love those. I love the new one that's the dog. Now they ruined the sidewalk they do. Was awesome. The dog when we're instead of the snake coming out of the sidewalk, it's the dog poops. Yeah. Turned sideways. I like that one. I don't know. Maybe we have if people so desperately want light there on fireworks. Maybe we there's some big parking lot somewhere where the city says you wanna light your own firework. Go have at it. No, I'm serious go. Here's a big piece of concrete. That would be riot. Somebody here points out banning fireworks is only effective is if there's enforcement police consider it a very low priority without enforcement of is meaning no. So what you do is you ban the sale of them. If people are saying, yeah, you people go to Evanston and get them. But it will not be nearly as much as people that buy them. I wonder how much money the fireworks stands the lobby the Utah. Good question. That's a good because I know they do. That's the reason they loosened up the the kind of fireworks that could be settled. I would like to know that Cameron high. Go ahead. Hey, yeah. I think they should ban them as well. Every time I come home the field across the street from my house, and my neighbors had always think they're heroes for putting out a fire. But they're the ones that. Yeah. It's lovely to live near people. Like that. Isn't it? Yeah. All right. Thank you Cameron. I remember, you know, when I had Sadie girl. I was so grateful when she finally went deaf. That's genius oldest daughter because my dog says she she used to be terrified. And I know a lot of people that have pets think this time of the year is really hard for them. We were we were drinking. We had the kids eleven to twelve year old lighting them off while we all that them to be careful. Oh, here's now. Here's an interesting point. And I was going to bring this up being a combat veteran. I can't stand being in a closet with earmuffs on during the fourth of July anymore. PTSD a lot of times these it brings on the PTSD for some of these vets and here in Utah. It's all month of July. I liked the all knowing who says. Yeah. But how am I supposed to light a professional fireworks show with my cigarette and throw a firecracker? It might dozen. That's fun. That's Marca Marca. Let's go to Lauren real quick. The phones are open eight seven seven six zero two nine six six Lauren. Go ahead. Hey, guys. Thanks for talking to me this morning. Good morning. Our pleasure. Believe me, I have two babies at home, and for me, it's not so much like the fires are a big deal. Right. But also all these animals are down on dogs zanex and in their Sunday jackets for the whole month of July. Like, I don't think there's a need for it. Yeah. The fourth of July one day fourth of July one day. Well, I really. I'm going to advise to the most everybody who's called in as is against the fireworks in the neighborhoods and all that call the cops call the cops and complain. But see that's just I feel like it needs to be legislated because busy doing but call the cops and complain just just register a complaint that may not mean that they're gonna rush out to your neighborhood, call and complain I had a neighbor across the street a couple of years ago, and it was a year where we were really really dry. We haven't had any rain in a long time. And I heard him sending off air. And this is the signs were up in the neighborhood. Do not let him off. Aerial fireworks? And I heard it land on my roof. And I went over to his house. And I said, what are you doing all come on? We're we're just having some fun. Oh. The judge. Grown people. Oh, Chris who works with one of the largest fireworks manufacturers distributors in the state knows the answer to your question. I as far as lobbying dollars. It's not as much as you would think, but it is a large tax boon for the state, many states like Michigan and Georgia have huge taxes on fireworks. I'll bet eight.
