Djokovic tops Paul; faces Tsitsipas in Australian Open final

"No, that joke of it just ended the run of the American Tommy Paul to move into the men's Australian open final and give himself a shot at a tenth title in Melbourne. The Serbian advance with a 7 6 6 one 6 two score line that belied just how hard he had to work for victory with Paul bush and Djokovic to many long draining rallies, some lasting more than 20 shots. He will meet the former French Open finalist, if Anna sets a pass in the battle for the title, the flamboyant Greek star, reaching his first Australian open finale with a fighting force that win over the hard hitting Karen kajen off. "Could let me know how much can Tommy Paul improve that forehand because it seems to me that a bit of improvement on the forehand and he's a serious prospect. You know, I always think it's good for a player when you already really good and there is one glaring area that you can improve. You know, coco goth style and obviously it's not good if you're unable to improve that, but it's better than being maxed out. Well I think what I saw from Tommy Paul tonight is a bit like when coaches say I want my player to practice with the best player so that they know what it's like and that they can drag you up. If you play people who are inferior to you, you're not going to improve necessarily. Tonight, he played the ultimate. He never played him before, and he found out where his game stands. Okay, maybe Tommy Paul could have played better tonight. He might have come out more settled, maybe next time you will, but level wise, he knows to go. And I think that's actually quite a useful yardstick really in terms of your own development to sort of think about that when you're training because that's what you're going to have to try and beat one day. Yeah, that's right, because I was sort of imagining, you know, does Tommy Paul, what is he? Mid 20s, does he imagine a tennis landscape in the not too distant future where Novak Djokovic is not there, you know? And if you know about Djokovic weren't in this tournament, Tommy Paul, you know, would be absolutely a real sort of contender for the title. And that must be exciting. But I suppose it's not if he's heard Djokovic's press conference tonight, which signals. Absolutely no intention to go anywhere anytime soon. And I think that's the point, it's probably best for him not to imagine that universe a because I don't think it's coming anytime soon and B because Djokovic is setting the standard and you want to get as close to that as you possibly can and experience is like tonight. I guess to help with that if they don't destroy your soul. We've had wave after wave of next gens who have talked to good game, but I think in the back of their minds have been waiting for the big four big three big two to step away and for the opportunities really to come flooding in. Right. We'll know about Djokovic ain't going anywhere. And right now, you know, we'll touch upon prospects against stephanos, but right now he's the favorite for all full slams. I think. You could argue about the French Open, but he's a favorite for the French Open, the other three he's the favorite. I know a lot can change. He's in the mix. In the course of it. A 100%. You know, I totally agree with you, man. I roll I sigh inside and a lot of the time outside, you know, when I hear things that indicate players are waiting for Djokovic and adult to step aside. I want to hear the whole gurus say, I want to test myself against Djokovic, even if that means losing. That's what you want to hear and actually feel like he's another example. They all need to feel what it's like to face Djokovic at a Grand Slam in order to get closer to him. I think. I mean, I think since the past did that, the French, when he played him once and then he very nearly beat in the next time. So that's irrelevant David because they have both forgotten about that match. That's something we learned today. Djokovic said a few days ago in sort of the ultimate flex, he was asked he was asked about the people remaining in the draw. And he's dismissively said, well, there's nobody else that's been in a Grand Slam final. He literally played in one against ethanol sits about and that quote was put back to sit to pass today and he went, I don't remember it either. An amazing moment. I think it was an accidental flex. I don't think he deliberately. I agree. Of course, of course it was. But very much came across as one because we know that it's definitely spent a lot of time thinking about that. No, no, he's forgotten, Matt. I know he's now saying that, but you know, the idea that Djokovic moved on already from that French Open final because it's just another one that his 21 slams, and since the past has been in a dark room thinking about it for two years, was kind of how I felt. So I like that sort of played the plate the mind game as well. A little bit today. And I obviously don't believe him, but how does it go? You've played your whole life has been dedicated to winning a Grand Slam. You've played one grandson finally. You were two sets up in it and you lost. I think you've forgotten I don't remember it. I would think I would spend my whole time thinking about the two sets. And I got two sets up in never sleep again. You know, in a positive way. I'm saying, if I'm stiff and assist about, I'm thinking, I had the better of this guy. Yeah, I lost. That's okay. I can lose to Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest of all time. But I was too sets up. I only need one more. Next time, I'll win in the one more. That's why we all need a David law in our life. Yes. Taking the positive from. Well, they're right there to be taken. Yeah. Do you know, I feel almost a bit under prepared for this grandson final that we've got coming up between sits at passenger Djokovic because none of us saw that Roland Garros final between sisa passengers. She was taking place on media day at queens, wasn't it? And we did do a podcast after it talking more generally. I think about the sort of achievement that Djokovic got there, but I feel like I don't know that match. I feel like I don't really understand how sits a pass did lose that two set lead. I might try and watch some of this. I feel like I've got a bit more of a handle on it than I think I was watching it sort of whilst doing everything the way I do.

"Semifinals and Elena were back in her sets up a showdown with Victoria Azarenka. Kim Chris, today is the 25th of January and we are here to catch up. On the Australian open quarterfinals at tennis weekly headquarters, we now have our semifinalist set magdalena of all people is there. We've also got Novak Djokovic who has destroyed another player in the draw this time Andre Rublev whenever will he get to a Grand Slam semifinal and we've got a very tasty showdown between Victoria Azarenka and Elena that is the oldest grandson champion left in the ladies draw and the youngest Grand Slam champion left in the ladies draw. So very tantalizing match up there and guys, we are recording 15 minutes earlier today because Chris, you have explicitly explicitly messaged us on the group because you've got a cinema. You've got a cinema date this evening. I do indeed and I do apologize for the 15 minutes early that you did get here and then I still was not on time. I don't know about you Kim, but I am not I'm not happy about that. I can only assume you're going to watch some RT Danish film with English subtitles. I'm hoping I don't understand anything about it and that's how you can tell it's a good film in Denmark, I think. So I will happily provide a review next time and then maybe that will make up for the minutes that you had to start a bit early on this one. I just hope it's going to be a scandi crime drama bit of scandi noir because that's still I think it's that still popular those sorts of things. I'd like to think they are popular in Denmark, but very popular outside of Denmark, particularly in the home counties. Very popular. And on BBC four rather than on the big screen we see for, yes, of course. Well, we're not here to talk about BBC four. Oh we guys, unfortunately. Unless tennis goes on to BBC four at some point. At the moment, it's kind of on Netflix and discovery and whatnot. But let's talk about the call to finals because we are here to catch up before Chris goes to the cinema to talk about all the quarter final action from Melbourne. Let's start with the men, shall we? I feel like we should maybe just get one particular match out of the way because I mean, it was kind of done and dusted before everything was on the wall before they went out, wasn't it? If this was a film, the plot would be kind of rubbish, I think. And the match we're talking about is Novak Djokovic against Andre Rublev, which was just a bit of a one sided affair to say the least. Joel, do you want to kick us off? And give us your synopsis of the Djokovic Rublev encounter. Yeah, I mean, Joker it's really just picked up. I feel where he left off against Alex de minor, Andre Rublev. I don't think he really did much wrong to be honest. But Djokovic was just on another level and there were no real signs of injury. Yes his leg was taped up, but it didn't really inhibit his movement and yeah, he got the job done very, very, very convincingly, 6 one 6 two 6 four Rublev really kind of felt a bit sorry for him, but powerless, I think, to really kind of do anything. You could see him kind of getting increasingly frustrated as the match went on, and even though he had a few breakpoint opportunities, Djokovic really, I feel just coming into his own at the business end of the tournament. Yeah, he's really gone from strength to strength since the early rounds or we had question marks over his leg. This was just an absolute kind of obliteration. You know, he was I mean, I don't think it was helped by the fact that his opponent as competent and consistent and highly ranked as Rublev is, has never won a grandson called finals, and we were saying before that none of us thought he really had the weapons to sort of really challenge Djokovic. So I think the matchup was just sort of kind of terrible on all fronts for giving us a close encounter. And I was hoping Rublev could do a bit more, but everything he did was just nullified by Djokovic and his defense. With Rublev not having the kind of killer killer weapons, it was, it was really just, I guess, only one outcome, there was arguably more drama with fans and whatnot, wasn't there, Chris, there was some hecklers going on, some flag encounters which didn't go down too well. What did you make of all the sort of off court stuff that was going on, Chris in this match? Well, I think if there was any good intention to it, it was just because Rublev needed to distraction or Novak Djokovic to be distracted. At berk during any of the points, because as you say, it was a bit of a mass destruction in this sense. But you always get kind of at grand slams. You get these sorts of situations and it's always tricky for officials to know what to do. But it's not something everyone is saying and you kind of want to keep the conversation focused on on the tennis because I think we can all agree that with the banning of Russian players at Wimbledon it hasn't necessarily had the positive effect. That kind of Wimbledon was hoping for. So try and keep politics out of tennis would be my preference there. I mean, do you think it was interesting to hear from Victoria Azarenka, which will get on into the second half. Her talking about this need for heroes and villains in tennis and in kind of just general sport narrative in the news and as a result of that feeling that Novak Djokovic is this is this villain and that's why we're seeing some hecklers in the crowd. We've seen more on more than one occasion Djokovic talked to the umpire telling them to kind of hear what they're saying and get security on them, get them out of here. Do you feel like Djokovic is being unfairly kind of painted as a villain and we shouldn't really be kind of looking at it from that kind of standpoint. I think in Azarenka's words, she was like, a lot of people see us as kind of like superheroes. No, we're kind of humans and we just want to go about our kind of day job. Do you feel like it's unfair to see kind of Djokovic get these hecklers when he steps out onto the tennis court? I think it is. Unfair. I mean, if I'm doing my job, I don't want to have people like having a go at me. I want everyone to treat me with respect, regardless of what I may or may not have done or what's going on in the world. So I don't think it's really appropriate, whatever the setting, but Chris maybe you well, maybe you've got a different angle, I don't know. I think it's part of obviously what comes with celebrity is that you are unfortunately opened up to criticism, and I think that the villain sort of aspect of things, I don't think Nadal is necessarily painted out as a villain in those ways or federal or necessarily unless you kind of have something against get sportsmanship and kind of staying out of controversy. I think of some of the big names. There is slightly more there's more debate around Djokovic in terms of his intentions a certain times. I do think that when it comes to the point about the superheroes, it's actually quite ironic because WTA actually did do a whole superhero themed year of on

And Iran. Erotic movie. Nice. That was cool. Really well done. I thought you didn't like working. I don't like you. Paul will face the Joker and let's see, stephanos, CC, tissue power. Oh yeah, what it is. City city pop. Or whatever. Karen. It's a guy. His name's Karen. Huh? I don't. Is he like Eastern European or something? Yeah. But his last name. Yeah, you're not kidding, baby.

"Tommy Paul might have a chance, a small chance, but a chance of beating Novak Djokovic in the Australian open semifinals. That will be the semifinal from the bottom half of the draw. We know that because Novak Djokovic has just beaten Andre Rublev for the loss of 7 games and Tommy Paul has beaten Ben Shelton. Well, don't Catherine. In four sets earlier on today, Novak Djokovic beating Andre Rublev is no surprise him doing it in three sets is no surprise. I don't think to any of us not least to Andre Rublev, the nature of the defeat, though. A little bit of a surprise. Well, certainly disappointing. I think from an Andre Rublev perspective, because I think there was a there was a chance for him to make it competitive tonight because Djokovic didn't start the match the way that he started the other night. He wasn't crystal clear in his focus and his comfort out there. He was irritable early on. He was worried about the wind, he did not like it was whipping around his clothes. He was, he doesn't like the wind, typically, does he, he's got the very precise produced strokes that are at their best when conditions are still, I think. And he doesn't like it. I think he's just irritates him. And he was feeling some twinges. It appeared. So I just thought, if Rublev plays really well here, he could at least extend games extend sets, call into question Djokovic's sort of demeanor and mood, which has been suspect in the early rounds here and was not an issue at all in the previous round. And he just didn't. He just kept on throwing in terrible rallies at the worst times, and then it just tailed away. And I think it was a really disappointing performance from him. It was my least favorite type of tennis match to watch a 5 set match. Which is lost before it's even taken to the court, really, because it's lost mentally. Andre Rublev might have had the tennis to, as you say, challenge that version of Novak Djokovic that we saw tonight probably not win, but make it a heck of a lot closer than that, but he was defeated mentally before it even started, and 5 sets of that, 5 sets of just playing something out. I find that a really off putting spectacle. As somebody that just wants to see competitive tennis, intensity, that match, a one sided score line, it had a lot of intensity to it, it had a competitive edge. Same with pergola. Exactly. I'd have liked them for the first even more competitive and to have gone to three sets. It's a shame that none of the women's quarterfinals did. And actually only one of the men's quarterfinals did that was the Ben Shelton and dummy ball match, but I found this a pretty grim watch quite frankly. Yeah, I don't have too much more to say about it, really. Rubs now lost all 7 Grand Slam, quarterfinals that he's played. I think he and Tommy brado share that unwanted record of having 7 losses and zero wins in grand Sam quarterfinals. It does feel like such a ceiling for him. I completely agree with David like there was a chance there to make Djokovic more uncomfortable than he did tonight and I think I've been out of the three of us, the sort of I think I've had the least big three big two fatigue, I think, but I've found tonight like a sort of real moment where I was like, you know, I'm seeing the 5 next to Rublev's name. He's the 5th seed here. And he's not even close to know about Djokovic. And look, I know know about Djokovic is quite possibly the greatest player of all time. He's staggeringly good. I don't expect Rublev to win, but. But he is 35. But he is 35. He's got he's got a good mummified leg. This things that are professional, you know, the world number 5 should be clinging to all the world number 6. Talking about the level of delusion that required to be a top tennis player. This things that can give you hope and help you convince yourself that you've got a chance. Yeah, I was about as interested in this max as I would have been if it was the number 55 against Djokovic. And that shouldn't be the case. Rublev has got quality and just never really. The thing is, I thought that he might just might be removing the pressure from his shoulders by saying all that that I've got no chance. And that it might even actually work. I ate it to relax him a little bit. Maybe make it a hiding to nothing for Djokovic like he can't win really canny. He can go through to the next round, but he's supposed to win. So what's to gain? Well, it wasn't that. There was actually Rublev genuinely didn't think he had any chaps. Going on to the court or at least that's what he said, pretty much. And that's how it came across in the match. So what else can you what else can you say? Another thing that was said tonight by Novak Djokovic in the post match press conference was an admission. An ambition of something that I think we knew and something David that you had interpreted in Djokovic's dark look and sublime performance against Alex de menor a couple of nights, which is that he said in no uncertain terms tonight, yes. There is an added something playing here after what happened to me last year I want it that bit more I have an extra edge, a quite fearsome edge quite frankly. Yeah, I think he does. It doesn't surprise me. I think, well, if I felt slighted the way he feels slighted, I would probably have a bit of an extra edge as well, whether I agree with his stance on that or not. But no, it does make it even harder for the rest. And like I say, going back to the federal years when he had the whole stadium against him, he just got better.

"Such a small margin if peritoneum made that backhand would we even be talking about Andy Murray in the same way. It's when you play against all these players where they're all so gifted and on any given day, someone could put in a fantastic performance. I would argue that I wouldn't think it's right to talk about what he can do at slams. I think it's about individual tournaments. It's about how he's feeling that week. And hopefully the rank people write he's at 62 in the live ranking at the moment. And this is after a full season of tennis. So that's my only concern is that if you look at the ranking you look at the results, it's not going to lend itself to return to the top 20 at any point, but these Grand Slam results are why you play tennis to play at this level on this stage to get that feeling back that obviously he wasn't able to move away from. So I just hope that at Wimbledon he's put in a great performance. The French, I'm not sure, particularly. But it was a bit odd loss. It was a bit odd last year because I think he was he was really conflicted about, oh, do I play on the clay? Do I not? Because I think he played in was he played one tournament in Madrid, he took a wild card very last minute and then didn't play the French Open and just sort of, I think, played surbiton challenger instead and started his grass court season early. So it'd be interesting to see obviously we've got a lot of hardcore tennis to come before then with Indian Wells and Miami, but yeah, I'll be interested to see how he approaches the clay season. But certainly I think this tournament should give him a lot of courage and confidence that he can still kind of mix it with players that are ranked above him and I really hope we do get out of that funk of winner match lose a match move on to the next tournament which I felt was a lot of his story over the last over the last 12 months last season. I did like I enjoyed he did tweet and this tweet has gone mega viral on Twitter a 192,000 likes. He tweeted two days ago I randomly bumped into the Doctor Who in 2017 told me the good news is the problem you have in your hip can be fixed, but you won't be able to play professional sport again. I think we dispelled that myth the last 5 days. Good night. And I think for me, that is the that is the legacy I think of Australia. Oh, sorry, of anti Murray at the 2023 Australian open. This is just, you can just defy you can prove you can prove people wrong. It's goosebumps. He's proven science wrong, right? Completely. And I think it's often you hear these stories that are inspiring, but not necessarily the reality. You can do anything and some people are like, well, you can't, if you have a metal hip, and it's incredible. I mean, I get goosebumps and when I watch Murray playing when I watch him do well, and you see him putting so much out there on the court. It's hard not to get emotional watching it because his story is incredible. And I know that we always talk about the metal hip, but do you get bored of how much we talk about the metal hit, or are you just like, every time are you just like, man, I am in awe of that. I guess it's a bit like the age thing and sort of like Venus Williams or some of the top players where we've been talking with like Federer and Nadal, more Federer, but we've been talking about it for so long about world vener and be able to play in London 2012. And he was only like 30 at the time or something. So I think those ones are like, of course, you can still play tennis, but I think we didn't realize with this one, is that he can still really play tennis and he can move in a way that no one would ever thought. So am I sick of it? I think the label I'm sick of, but the context, I think, is so significant to the incredible things that he's doing because it's incredible. Yeah, exactly. But in consideration, it's genuinely unbelievable. And just a word on Roberto Bautista, because obviously they played each other, well, I think was it in 2017 or 2018 when we had the retirement video after a baptistery group had given also Andy Murray a loss. Now he is on to face, I think Tommy Paul in round four. I mean, I think RBA has gone unnoticed and underappreciated for many years on the tour. He is also not a really a spring chicken. I think he's 30 four years old. And again, his longevity on the tour, he's still a seeded player at 34 and I still think on his day is a very, very hard customer to kind of put away doesn't really give you a lot of errors. I thought in this match his lob was it was almost Andy Murray esque I thought his lob was fantastic. A lot of people talk about him as doesn't really have any major weapons and as a result has that sort of stunted his potential throughout his career. But what do you see in terms of this result where he could go given where he is in the draw and not having that big weapon? Do you think that is a big factor in where he is at the moment? Yeah, I mean, he's someone that you know will make it very hard for you to beat them. But you are able to, if you have a level that's above his. But if not, he can go with anyone, you know? He's someone, for example, his next match against Tommy Paul, that's not a good matchup for Tommy Paul. Tommy Paul is on the edge of the consistent side of things, but he is not always putting together this result, but I'd argue that his talent level is higher than Batista agu but for that one I would definitely predict that Batista would get that. I also counted up Batista very early on in this tournament. But if you look at his performance timeline across his career, he's only been to I think it's only been past the fourth round twice in his entire career. And so he's had a very long career, but he hasn't necessarily he's been eclipsed, but on the tour. Are you trying to say he's the male Elise mertens? Maybe a little bit at least corneas. Oh, okay, okay. In that sense, but maybe he is actually that's probably quite a good one. Similar sort of peak ranking. Three round four, maybe a quarter final at a Grand Slam. Yeah, but like it's only happened a couple of times that he has gotten that distance, but I think it's hard to consider him a title contender. And even when he made that semifinal, it was like he was on borrowed time. He was like, I can't believe it sort of thing. I don't know, but you had high hopes of him in this tournament, so maybe you know something we don't know. I think that's the only I mean, I think that is the only kind of saving grace as a Murray fan, obviously I was disappointed, but hey, I did have RBA predicted to get to the quarterfinals. And I believe you, I think Kim certainly, I think, laughed at me.

"After the food kiosks of clothes. That's the thing in there. They loved. I mean, I love the doubles here. They love a home player, but yeah, it is so. You don't need it. I'm not nothing about that man. But I agree. The lateness of it all. Crowd and those players won't be put through, you know, whole evening of waiting and wondering, and anyway, day session on that court, nuria produces Diaz against Donna vekic, then under Rublev against Dan Evans, interesting one that, sabalenka mertens third on, there there of course doubles partners or have been doubles partners lots in the past one slams together. And Tommy Paul against Jensen Brooks B that's on course three tomorrow. Both for paying doubles. Tomorrow. Tommy Paul against Jenson brooksby feels like a bit of an aggro place to be. I think all the places that Jens and brooksby goes are potentially a great place. Which gives people up. Brooksby is not one of the Bros. He's not in the gang. And he's okay with it. I love that. I want to see that. Marissa curry has not got the job done and she's got a lead at the moment. So it's all hold on to everything. Hold on to your hats, folks. "Super well. I don't know what I was thinking. Otter didn't have an answer, you know, Carlos sacras was all over him. Only 8 unforced errors definitely like the best we've seen alcaraz on this surface and obviously so far in this tournament. So yeah, I definitely call that one completely wrong. I mean alcaraz next round. That's one of the marquee ties I think for tomorrow in round four. But yeah, this was a great performance from our craz. Probably the best match he's ever played. On a grass court and I certainly think against Yannick sinner, he's going to need to be playing close to that level, you know, to have a chance. I put cinnamon maybe as a slight favorite actually. In that match up against our crest, simply because of the lack of alcohol experience on this court. She thinks sinner maybe has a little bit more and given the way he's been returning based on what he did against John Isner. Yeah, I put it in it as a slight favorite but I wouldn't be surprised Kim if that turns into an absolute slugfest and who knows, goes deep into a 5th set. Yeah, and yeah, I agree. I think it could well do. We also Joel, very excitingly. Tim van Wright haven into the fourth round. His dream run is continuing. I mean, he's got no back Djokovic in the fourth round, but at least he gets his moment on center court against the number one seed. Tim van Wright has a story. Yeah, he came through against bastard ashville. I mean, great stuff. I'm really happy for him. I'm really happy he got the wild card into the tournament, then that he's very much justified that wild card. And again, he's another player that is not benefiting from this from the lack of ranking points. You know, he would be right up there, wouldn't he? But yeah, that's a frustration, but hopefully he can give Novak a good run for his money to write when he's got absolutely nothing to lose. So I'm quite curious to see how he got someone against against Novak. And even though John Isner didn't get through for the Americans, we did have double American success from Francis TFO and Tommy Paul with tiafoe coming through Alexander bublik in four sets and then Tommy Paul coming through Yuri vesely in three sets. So yeah, I think going into the tournament Francis TFO, I was thinking, could he do something here? It's great to see him living up to the living up to his billing. I think he's into the fourth round for the first time. Tommy Paul, a little bit more of a surprise package. He's got cam norrie tomorrow who is in the forefront of Wimbledon for the first time. I swear another player Kim, we just like was in the third round all the time, so it's great to see him breaking through. I think you WhatsApp me saying, you think Tommy Paul's gonna win that. I have to say, given the way nori has been playing, I gotta put nori is that as the favorite there. But it's gonna be, I think it's gonna be a tough battle. I think nori shouldn't underestimate Paul because he is playing some very good tennis at the moment and another player who probably is going under the radar on the outside courts. Yeah, I mean, you're seeing this match tomorrow, I think, aren't you Joel on court one? I just feel captain Karen has done great getting through to the fourth round, you know, it's his first time at this stage, but I'm just sensing British disappointment. And I feel that Tommy Paul, yeah, I just, I feel like he's easy. Yeah. Exactly. I think he's easy to underestimate. And I just feel like he's had some good results on the grass building up to Wimbledon and I don't know. I feel like it would be four sets or something. I don't think he nor is going to lose in straights or anything. But I mean, I'm obviously wanting nori to win. I think it would be fantastic and well deserved for him to reach the quarters of a slam with all of his good results and titles over the last year or so. But yeah, I don't know, there's a lot of matches throwing that I've actually like genuinely quite open in terms of who's going to win. You know, I think there's some really, really decent ties and a few names. Yeah, I've been going on to the radar like Francis TFO, no one's really been talking about him. So it's nice that he's been able to come through and make it into, I guess, the second week, although it's the Sunday, this is the first. This is the first proper Sunday, isn't it? No, it's going to be. I know, we can't say it. They've reached the second week, assuming they've got to round four. Exactly. It's still the same. Still the same week. Yeah. I mean, talking of the schedule for tomorrow. Let's have a quick look at it before we end this episode. We've got on center court Watson and niemeyer opening up, followed by Yannick sinner Carlos alcaraz. And then Novak Djokovic versus Tim van Wright toven caught one has Tatiana Maria oster penko, norrie V Paul, and then mertens jabor, then in court two we've got buchek versus Garcia, and David Goffin, someone we haven't mentioned yet against Francis TFO. So some interesting matches there tomorrow, where are you, where are you looking? Well, I'm actually not going tomorrow. I'm going to stay at home and have a lie in because I have had zero sleep. I'm going to have breakfast in bed and watch Caroline Garcia. I think I left an a.m.. Is that technically breakfast time? I feel like that's more drunk. I'm going to have a French inspired brunch. Hashtag renaissance, some crepes, some crabs. Yeah, good decent crepes. Croissant. Yeah, we've got to get the baguette out. Maybe sure have a bakery. Bagels. Bagels and breadsticks. We'll see. Yeah, some kind of bread products. But I mean, talking about bread and food, you're going to court, why aren't you hospitality tomorrow? Get you. I know, oh, well, I was speaking. I think we should do, like maybe we'll do a little bonus pod of like a little Wimbledon guide of you and the queue and how to do that properly. And then I can do how to do hospitality properly. I've been picking out my clothes, all this week. I've been worrying about what to wear. Maybe I'll put it up on our Instagram tomorrow, just to show people how how tennis weekly handles hospitality at women. Are you going to wear a tennis weekly.

"Didn't see these incredible highs that were so used to from our careers. There was maybe one where he covered the length of the core in a split second as he does and hit a winner up the line. But otherwise, he saved it for just a tiny little things like occasionally just latching on to two or three returns in a row and that was enough to get the break in the first set. And then the second set went to a tie break and he has that thing out cares where you expect him to play better, the bigger the moment. Which is something that so many great players have all great players have, I think. And he did it in the type, but he won it 7 love. You know, I've been a really close set and suddenly he just went bang bang bang 7 love tiebreak is his two sets of love lead. And real 7, 7 points in a row. Yeah, so it was really interesting to watch him. Because I'm not expecting him to win this tournament in a way that, you know, I wasn't expecting him to win the French Open, but he was a real genuine title contender there, and he had his, he had his struggles against Ramos vinyl, so he ended up losing to zverev. There was, you know, there was, again, it was seeing him in a different scenario. I was seeing him as a Grand Slam contender for the first time. Here it's seeing him figure out grass, see what he's capable of, and I just think he's going to get better and better. The more he plays on. He's one of two players in this drawer who can beat Novak Djokovic. The other one beaten it down. What about Tim van reiter? He was your he was your, what was the fortune cookie again? Follow the path of your heart. Yeah. What if the part of his heart leads to beating Novak Djokovic David? Well, I'm sure it does. He's on it. This forehand would have down the line. Let's see what's in future for fortune cookies. His serve is also massive today, alcohol. I mean, again, it's about the floor, not the ceiling. Okay, we knew he could serve 130 mph. But he's always serving over a 120 mph. It's very rare that a first serve drops below one 20. It's just consistently big, you know, it's impressive. Okay, let's wrap up the men's draw well, while we seem to have arrived there. David gave Ryan peniston the kiss of death today. Johnson. I've had one prediction that's worked out on day one. Everything else has gone wrong. Yeah, Paul Ryan penniston, that was a tough one today. He got told I'd backed him and you have to. Yeah. Cam nori avoided the same fate. He had to go 5 sets against muna on court number one, what was Hannah's brilliant Cameron nori pun? No more. Keep cam and norian, yes. Very good. That's our collective analysis of this match. Hugo and Bert turned up to play the number three seed without any tennis rackets. Can we talk about that for a moment, please? How does that happen? He got to the stage of opening his bag. Before discovering there were no rackets. I really like you going back. He incidentally beat the number three seed Casper Ruud today in a full set. But we're going to lean on the racket because he deserves it. Because if you show up to a tennis match without racket, sorry. Isn't it? It's more than that. It's like, if you show the match is called and you don't show up. Sorry, you didn't show up. That's the default. You should have got a penalty for it. Sorry, there's no tennis podcast tonight. We didn't bring our microphones. Absolutely. You don't show up able to play. I find it ludicrous. I can see. Just like the whole your match is called, and you know. Does it all the time? I still haven't got over Mikhail in there, turning up about 12 minutes late for his match. Sorry, the match starts now. You weren't there. Almost always. Sorry you go. Sort yourself out for next round. I mean, that is one of the talking points of the day, actually. That section of the draw, we're guaranteed a first time Grand Slam semifinalist already. Who have we got? We've got ugo and bear, David Goffin, Francis tiafoe, Alexander bublik. Great today, TFO. Oh, good. I've got him going far. Cameron norrie, Steve Johnson, Tommy Paul, Yuri Wesley. A lot of Americans there. One of those 8 will reach the semifinals. TFO plays bublik next and that is going to be a fun time. Yeah. I like it. Tommy Paul, playing very well. Tommy Paul can play. Heroes, Tim henman, and he really means that he's spent hours watching to amendment on YouTube. And wanted to learn the volume. Yeah. But it's coach Brad Stein. Yeah, usually when you hear that start about guaranteed new semifinalists or quarterfinalist or finest or whatever you think, does that mean really sort of dodgy dodgy section of the draw. But a lot of these names quite excite me. Actually. I really like watching Tommy Paul and Francis tiafoe and Alexander bublik on grass and a few others in there as well. I think it's just like. Diversity. Among those names. And different stages of careers as well. And Johnson Goffin. Opportunity for cam norrie. This is the this is the one. He's been waiting for. He had his work cut out. He did..

"And so it takes a little bit more of that time, but 70% of that time needs to be spent off the court, you know, and less of the time on the court. But, you know, the teams I had at Georgia Tech, I think were pretty special because they all wrote in their journals every day. And that was something they enjoyed doing, like putting into words, the things that they were feeling and what they were going through when they're at their best, what's going on in their mind, what's going on off the court, what's happening in their life, that's producing better results for themselves. And they could go back through their journal and look back and see when it was going, well, what was I thinking? Where was I at? What was going on in my life? And they can go back and find those places and then, okay, I need to get back to that. Right. And if you as a coach can help them get back to that, then they can find that joy to go out there and practice and play and compete and do all the things they do. And people hate that question. But I look at the way I look at it, I say, okay, women make fewer errors. Yes. And they try less dumb stuff. Yes. And then when you look at like some of the guys, like I always say like some of the young guys, right? You look like a young Tommy Paul, a young Francis. Right? They have probably more tools, you know, can use the bottom edge of the racket in the top of the racket. They make more errors and they do more dump stuff, right? And they try more things. When they actually just needed to make this ball, you know what I mean? So I think just from a tennis standpoint, the women are more controlled, right? It's easier to control the level on the court, not in a sexist way. They just don't have these bright ideas, right? Like, I haven't certain body the whole match. And then 5 all dudes, I'm a certain body. Like, no, that was a bad idea. You know what I mean? It's less of that. I was actually easier on the court that I also felt like, you know, on the women's side, they listened better. Yep. They listened better. I mean, I could say it one time. This is what we're going to do. Tell them what we're going to do. They're ready to do it. You tell a guy what we're going to do and go out to the line. He's like, what are we doing? What's the drill? Are you not listening? I shouldn't have to repeat it, you know? I said it once already. But on the women's side, they just listen better. Guys, like my guys, I laugh all the time with them. I'm like, I had to bring my shovel out here and smack you over the head. So listen, you know? No, it's a little bit different that way. They're just a little bit more attentive, we go through video sessions and they're really paying attention to the details of what they're doing and sometimes the guys are their minds wandering a little bit. So we've got to kind of ran them back in a little bit. So I got a funny story. So Tommy Paul always, we spent two weeks together around Thanksgiving last year, team tennis. And he was actually thinking about going to college. Yeah..

We've got TP, Tommy Paul, doing what we all know he can do. On the women's side, we've got Shelby Rogers, following up her great performance at the U.S. open with another style of performance at Indian Wells. We've got the emergence of parliament dosa kicking ass and taking names. And we have got Vika, Victoria Azarenka. Resurgence after her injury in Chicago. And speaking of Mika, she's one of our guests on this week's podcast. This week's episode features Victoria Azarenka, isle of tomjanovich, talking about the roles between being a player and having a sit in stance and play the role of cheerleaders. Supporting her boo. A tale berry teeny. And we've got the always entertaining, always one of my favorite people to sit down with Sloane Stephens. Talking about live on tour, advice to the next generation and trying to turn the tables on. Asking me a few questions. Stay tuned for this week's episode of the tenant dot com podcast. Remember last year when Charleston, when it was raining and you were dancing? I was dancing. Do you want to do a TikTok? I want to talk about the full story of that. Let's go ahead and tell the full story. Yes, I was dancing for TikTok because I was just fresh off the quarantine. I mean, it's kind of. It was our first kind of event. And I was super into TikTok. So I was like trying to make it fun coming back. But then the last day do you remember? No. And I was hoping the tennis channel did have some footage of it, where I started to be a DJing, and when I raised and your eyes went just what did I play because I played an explicit version of one song and everybody starts to freak out.

"Was an interesting match against kruger And mitch is gonna play today against aid mccue after winning that third-set tie-break but It's it's interesting because we'll have such high expectations for himself. Alex As you know all too well and it's it's going to be really hard to match the expectations with what is a. I guess you'd call normal progression through the ranks. Because he's been friends with tommy and all of those guys right that group of tommy paul and others and he's seen them up at where they're at for so many years it takes time to get to that level and i just have that question especially after winning an. At title with will will he go through that progression and allow himself To to have moments like like this week where he forgives himself and allows himself to maybe play a few futures. You challenges to kinda get where he needs to be That's the question. Us coaches us players. Anyone who has watched will play. It's on him because the serve the forehand. You saw it yesterday against kruger. I thought they were the two biggest weapons on the court. Outside of maybe mitchell's fitness. Just the way he was able to make that match so physical but at the same time you can see an and again shout out to you for conveying this. The way will turn to his carolina coaches yesterday. Why am i not getting over the hump here. This is a match. I will bloomberg usually win into tight situation and like it's not college anymore need professionals and so i. I completely agree with you and you know again. It is on him because he does see right away and it helps when you're playing with jack sock always but he's got the skills like his game is ready. It's just a question of again and you've done such good job of conveying this over the years. It's the mental side that is which separates the player who rises right. Yeah that's one hundred percent yet. It's why. And i know you'll wanna talk about this a little bit later but sam ricketts is such a great example because he is always so you know. It's just like this flat line of effort level consistently right. It's just right there. Same no matter. What kind of event No matter what you know whether juniors professional college it's just right there the exact same effort level throughout one of the most difficult things that i've seen over. I've now been broadcasting this challenger level for eight years and having done Some of the press aide stuff at the challenger level for many years before that with with college players. You're kind of able to peak for the weekend right like you know you're going to have it most like two matches on friday and sunday or friday saturday night right those you are able to peak for that. It's a business now right. And so it's it's one thing to kind of just kinda have that let that week and then you can say all right friday. Let's go. It's a different story when you're having to do it every week every day and you know you look at will having what a fantastic week. Last week You know getting to play at the newport. The hall of fame open and winning a atp doubles title. For god's sake but then he comes back against mitchell krueger. Who's just going to be again. It kind of like salmon that regarding the effort love he might have some ups and downs in in terms of just the the level of the.
