"Yeah, I'm taking Arizona as well. To me, they've got the most reasonable path to the sweet 16. Got seaton hall or TCU and the round of 32. I don't think they have any problem there. This is why I'm glad we wait to vote on national coach of the year because two weeks ago, maybe that said Cooley. But I think you fast forward to the present. My vote would probably go to Tommy Lloyd at Arizona not only do I have Arizona winning this regional. "Interesting that Houston was it's been a top ten team most of the season and they got completely left out. And I think that was right. You know, Houston, as of yesterday, had zero quadrant one wins. Now they got a quadrant one win on Sunday in a wild finish. But they didn't have one as of Saturday. So I thought that made sense. Anyway, sex too many. I thought they did a top 16 look pretty good than me. I can't disagree. You want to tour around and talk about these results here? Yeah, so just a big bullet point stuff from the weekend auburn is now two and two and it's past four games. After that loss at Florida on Saturday, Kentucky rallied from 13 down to beat Alabama without Tai Dai Washington in savior Wheeler. When they went 13 down, I was like, okay, well, this is what they look like without their starting back court and then they just put on a show the rest of the way. Oscar sheepway was excellent again. Texas tech completed the regular season sleep of Texas. And did you hear it? Somebody tweeted audio. Like iPhone footage from inside the arena. When Chris beard got introduced inside the Irwin center, you could hear it felt like you could hear more booze. Really? Then cheers. Yes. He got booted home by the Texas tech fans that showed up at the Irwin center, so that was something. Like you mentioned province came from 19 down to win at butler, Illinois won at Michigan state. I'll let you take it wherever you want to take it. I will start with those and then we'll tour around elsewhere. Texas tech, how about this? So they get the sweep of Texas, only strengthen their credentials at this point. I was looking after we did this highlight on Saturday. With king dermis, the host of that marathon afternoon, great stuff, working with him. We noticed, here's Texas tech. At home of our so Oklahoma at TCU home versus Kansas state at Oklahoma state. Right now, Texas tech is 21 and 6. Mark Adams has a better start through 27 games than any coach in Texas tech history. He's, you know, crispier did things that had never been done in Texas tech before. Well, now Mark Adams already has done that, right? So it's viable that the red raiders could be 25 and 6 going into the big 12 tournament. If they do that, they'll have four losses in the league, they're probably not catching Kansas, which has two Baylor also has four, but TTU could be a two seed in the big 12 tournament. I actually think it's got an outside shot. Maybe even better than that at being a two seat overall. There's no outright bad loss on the schedule. It just has losses on the road to teams that might not make the tournament. Oklahoma won't spend too much time on the sooners, but Oklahoma's now 14 and 13 and it didn't win on the road. It wasn't even competitive against Iowa state. And then there's a road loss for Texas tech against Kansas state. So those aren't teams that don't seem to be going to sell their tournament but they're still quad one results. There's no bad loss for Texas tech overall and again, you know, we talked about this a couple of weeks ago, but Mark Adams has just done a phenomenal job. So I don't want to harp here. I just would put him. I would go Tommy Lloyd one. Cool he rallying from 19 down to win at butler. He's I guess he's number two in my coach of the year. I really think I might go Adam's three Bruce pearl four, top four coach of your canon, and then Cali parry might be 5 for me. That might be my 5 off the top of my dome coach of the year top 5 list right now. I don't know if you agree disagree with having any other thoughts on that. But good one for the red writers. I'd probably vote Ed Cooley, coach of the year right now. Tommy Lloyd Mark Adams in some order the next two. I mean, what ads doing with this Providence team is incredible. And I know that Tommy and Mark both inherited good situations. But they've made them great. You know, you can't say that you knew Texas tech was going to be this good unless you had Texas tech being this good in a preseason. And you can't say you knew Arizona would be like, you know, a number one seed unless you had them projected that way in the preseason. Just because they inherited my situations, doesn't mean that they haven't done incredible jobs to get those places where they're at right now. And it's wild to look at it'll be the AP poll on Monday. The top 25 and one right now. One Gonzaga, Mark fuze, two Arizona, Tommy Lloyd's wildcats. It's just sort of wild that it's Mark and his longtime assistant at the tip top of the sport right now. Agreed. It's done a great job. Auburn losing 63 62. Lemon booty. What was when they were doing? Oh, hold on. There's a lemon booty situation going all around here because Florida had to gain more well in hand. And then it was just trying to give it away. Just give it away. How about the stat of the weekend? Walker Kessler did not have a block in this game. Stunning. Did not have a block. Colin castleton played damn well. He had 19 points, 8 boards, three blocks themselves, a pair of steels. They needed him to come up big Tyree Applebee scored 26, including a huge three that they wound up needing there. Auburn takes it takes a loss. You heard the stat, right? I also tweeted out, I can't trivia time you here, like the stat with auburn's drought at the Odom, you're aware of it. I trivia time. Okay, ask it. Let's see if I can get this. Get it within two years. It's right if you get it within two years. Last time auburn won at Florida was what year. Last time, auburn went up Florida. Oh, boy, I bet it's been a while. Let me preface by saying I have no idea I didn't hear this. Okay. I'm going to go 2002. 19 96. A man named Daniel werfel was tossing the pigskin for the Gators and the old ball coach. That's how long ago it's been. That's how long it's been since offer one of Florida. Frankly, it's mind boggling and the streak still continues there. Florida and getting the win, resuscitates its NCA tournament case. 17 and ten now, just a mammoth win. Florida's got another good one on a neutral over Ohio State. And then elsewhere, there's just not a lot. So this was significant Gators next have Arkansas on Tuesday night. When that and then we'll start talking Florida fans. But I thought that was pretty, I thought that was pretty significant. Kentucky winning without its starting back court. Well, let's start. Let's sit on auburn for a second, 'cause you got more. Okay. 7 with 91 seconds left and almost gave the game away. Like auburn had the ball, 7 and a half seconds down a point. Yes. The interesting thing about auburn or among the or just a noticeable thing about auburn. Tell me how many other teams you could say this about. Might be done in terms of national title contenders. There are two best players are not end of game players. Like, you can't just throw the ball to either one of them and say,.

"So if you want to say that they've been fortunate in some cases fine. But chalking what they're doing up to just luck, that's why opening, because it's not, I don't think it's an accurate reflection of what's happening there. I will say, I should have put provenance in initially, and if the friars have three losses on selection Sunday, they are going to have a great case for a one seat with two now. They're three, no matter how they get there, they'll have a really good case. I'll get to that in just a second. Just a couple more notes to wrap it up before we preview Tuesday. Do you want to note Miami one at wake forest in an important bubble game? I think that was actually one of the bigger bubble results of the weekend with Kane's going in to wake. Those are a couple of bubble level teams and Jim lerone is group getting a win there. Davidson lost it at Rhode Island. David is still in the field, but, you know, something for the a ten and then your longest winning streaks in the country right now Gonzaga, South Dakota state Murray state Vermont all sitting at 14 in a row. Good group there. Last one, Illinois state, athletic director Kyle Brennan announced an hour before the Super Bowl. That Dan Mueller will be let go fired however you want to turn it. At the end of the season, he's going to coach the red birds through the anesthesia and he's been there a decade and they were rumblings about this a year ago, but yes, we will have another opening. This one in the MVC with Illinois state. All right, as for our Monday, Tuesday, Paris. Monday, we're good. It's a light slate. Valentine's Day. Love how this I mean, listen, you know, I can't get fired up over wazoo and Oregon. West Virginia Kansas state Dayton URI these are solid matchups, but there's not a game of true national urgency relevance intrigue. So you kind of get Monday off to a certain extent. If you're a fan of anything that seems obvious, you could be locked in. But you know, Valentine's night might be a little bit open, nothing wrong with that. On Tuesday. My man took one trip to CVS and now he's fired up and ready to go tonight. I'm just mentioning how to horny as always come up. Can we continue on through the show? Here is a video. I'm not the one who thought I got hit on this morning at CVS. Hey, I was not, I was not doing the hitting. I was the hit he. Here we go. I guess I just don't assume every time somebody speaks to me that they're hitting on me. You've got a woman in her, I would assume early 30s. Okay. At the CBS card station, hallmark, whatever, are you getting anything for anyone? What kind of question is that? Well, am I buying it for myself here? I'm buying a card for myself. I can acknowledge it's a weird question. Come on now. I would go tomorrow to say it's even weird to even talk to another human in CBS. I agree. That's what I'm saying. Have you ever talked to another customer in CVS? I don't think I ever have. Don't think that's ever happened. Just outside of my curiosity. That's all. All right, so Tuesday night. We got loaded. All right. Only thing I'm gonna say to you at CVS is like, where's the drano? Can you show me where the drano is? Hey, life tip here. Don't pour drano down your toilet. Oh boy. Doesn't work. Yeah? No good, huh? Development in the parish household? Yeah, it.

"Or if your goal is to win the national championship, teams with the guard like this just don't do it. They don't get there. I went through the last 5 final fours. There's no team. That guards the way they guard that gets to the final four. Certainly does it. No team that wins the national championship. So that's a real concern. You know, I'm not saying it's impossible because anything's possible when you got Jade and ivy. And Zack Edie and trevian Williams, but history says it's wildly unlikely that Purdue will get where it's trying to get unless it improves significantly on the defensive end. Right now they're ranked a 116th in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency according to Ken pa. What that number tells us is that no matter what any other number attached to you says, what that number tells us is that you will likely almost certainly lose before the final four. Let's have a little fun thought experiment a week out our week out a month out from selection Sunday. So we both think that Gonzaga and Arizona are going to be on the one line when we get there. So we're going to agree on that. Gonzaga and Arizona will be number one seeds on selection Sunday. We both agree that. Who are going to be we're going to be the other two parish because the candidates would be auburn, Kentucky, Baylor, Kansas, Purdue is 5 duke is 6 that probably is it, right? My forgetting someone, I'm trying to look here. I might be it. Anyone else gonna sneak up? Probably not. Although Wisconsin's high on quad one quad two combined, they just lost a Rutgers, I don't know if that takes some of the conversations. But let's just for fun. So Gonzaga, Arizona, I will say, I will say, I'm going to take your point about auburn and I'm going to stick with it. You said they could still have a case to have the best resume in the sport now. They don't have to go play at Kentucky. I will say auburn is a one seed. If you win the big 12, how are you not getting a one seat? So I will say Gonzaga, Arizona, auburn Kansas, so you're one seeds a month from now on selection Sunday. Would you agree or you want to swap out a team in there? I'll swap out a team. I'll go Gonzaga, Arizona, Kansas, 'cause you win the big 12, you're gonna be a one scene. Gonzaga Arizona Kansas, Kentucky. How about this? No matter what happens Tuesday night in Knoxville. Okay. I was about to get a little too far out of my skin. I don't know what happens. Kentucky will lose one more game in the regular season. Win the SEC tournament and be a one seat on selection Sunday. That's my prediction on February 14th. Kentucky will lose one more game. This regular season. And they'll win the SEC tournament and be a one scene. We both got Gonzaga. We both got Arizona. We've both got Kansas. I've got auburn, you've got Kentucky. Kentucky does have at Tennessee at Arkansas at Florida remaining. That's tough. That's a little, yeah, no. There's a scenario in which it's neither and, you know, all the other teams I mentioned before are still conceivably there. But yeah, I'm gonna be that's gonna be a fun push fun chase. I think like a school was like duke. I think duke, 21 and four, you know, one of Boston college over the weekend, one of clumps and I know you talked about in the previous podcast. It's got wake forest at home on Tuesday night. Duke has at UVA at Syracuse at pit. Those are its remaining road games. Now it lost at home to Virginia just a week ago there. I think duke's going to have to win out in the regular season. And then we'll see how things kind of another duke lost, I think, because of its opponents in the ACC, a duke lost in the regular season, probably knocks it out. I tell you this, you can't get to 6 losses and get a one seat, not gonna happen. One 5 lost duke team can get there, but it's gonna have to rely on movement elsewhere, which would be intriguing because in most seasons you might say a duke team with 5 losses is like an automatic or one student. And I agree with you. And most seasons that would be the case, but I don't know about this season. But I think there's still a lot of teams still alive for it and that's what makes it fun. That's why I wanted to drop that on. And Providence, I don't think Providence will get there. But Providence, I believe is now ten and two in the first two quadrants. I know. The resume is strong. The computer number is not as much. In part because they play so many a lot of their wins are very close and they're two losses or blowouts. I just sort of laugh when I see people confused about why Providence computer numbers aren't what they think they should be. It's like not some mystery. They win a lot of close games. And they they're two losses are blowout losses. That's the explanation. It's not that hard to figure out. They're 9 and zero in games decided by 5 or fewer points. And I sort of made this point on Saturday. I get that there's got to be a luck element to that. I get that. There's got to be a luck element in there somewhere. But I think it's got more to do with it coolie. And his team, then just lock. Again, you can't win a national championship. With rare exceptions without getting lucky somewhere along the way. All right? Luck plays a part in this stuff. If you ask a coach who's won a national title, what's the most important thing that has to happen for you to do that? What they'll tell you is you got to be really, really, really good. And you got to be really, really, really fortunate. Those are the two things that are, you know, I remember talking to Billy Donovan about it. He was like, you know, if this shot doesn't go in this game, then we're eliminated in the second round. It's not usually enough to just be a great team. You have to be a great team that the brakes go your way. So there is a luck element. But I refuse to just chalk up what's happening at Providence right now. In these close games to luck. To chalk it up to that is to be dismissive of the roller coat plays in those moments of the role players play in the moment of the role of that pressure and calmness, play the role, those things have in those moments. No athlete will tell you that some people don't perform better under pressure than others. That some people aren't calmer and cooler in pressure situations than others. And Providence seems to be an excellent example of that..

"Are the only coaches to win 30 games in their first year as a head coach. Bill Guthrie at North Carolina, Bill Hodges, Indiana state, brought Underwood at Stephen F Austin. Steve prome at Murray's state, Jamie Dixon went 31 and 5 in 2004, his first year as a head coach at Pitt. First he has a coach period. Brad Stevens did it. His first year as a head coach of butler won 30 games and then Stan heath won 30. He got there because he made the elite 8 in 2002. John Warren in Oregon, of course, you remember John Warren. 1945, played a 43 game season with 30 and 13. Those are the only head coaches to win 30 in their first year Tommy Lloyd I think it's going to do this. Now, as for the trivia time, the answers I just mentioned, I'm the only head coaches to get a one seed in their first season as a head coach. Guthrie at North Carolina who just went 34 and four was the national Naismith coach of the year, got a one seat and took Carolina to the final four. Inheriting the roster from Dean Smith. But that is an all timer and then Bill Hodges had Larry Bird after serving as an assistant at ISU. He went undefeated into the installed tournament and made the title game without a loss, finished 33 and one, ISU, of course, lost to Irvin Johnson and Michigan state in that epic classic Alzheimer 79 championship game. So those are the only two to get a one seed, the NCAA began conventionally seeding the field in 79. So they technically see that the field in 78, but the way they did it was it really wonky, and I didn't even consider that because it was between automatic bids and that largest. So the way we know the field to be seated started in 79, only two coaches have done it. Parrish, yes or no. Tommy Lloyd will become the third in less than a month. Yes. Agreed. Because hey, because I just think they're good enough to do it. But B, I don't know how many legitimate loss opportunities are on the schedule. You know, they've already played UCLA twice. You know, I think they're going to roll through the rest of this. I mean, they might take a loss somewhere. But I think they're going to be fine. And they're going to end up with a one seed. If you wanted to nitpick them a little bit and I'm not really interested in it. But they beat Michigan. The big wins, or Michigan Illinois, UCLA USC. Beat Michigan will Michigan was a mess, being an Illinois team that for whatever reason loses often. They split with UCLA. And then they beat a USC team that hasn't really beaten anybody other than UCLA. Yeah. So I don't know that Arizona can match the other elite teams in the country for top line wins. I mean, I know they got 6 quadrant one wins, but I just told you what the best of them are. And you can, as we've noted many times, all quadrant one wins aren't the same. And so if you wanted to nitpick them, that's the place to start, but this seems great. They're one of only two teams in the country, top ten in both offensive and defensive efficiency according to Ken pom. They play fast. Their experienced and Tommy's the goods, it looks like and we also talk about this all the time. You and I have known Tommy for a long time. And always assumed he would be a head coach someday, presumably at Gonzaga. When Mark stepped away. But when Arizona comes calling and mark's retirement is nowhere in sight, you know, mid to late 40s, there's no way you pass on that opportunity. So he took it, understandably so. And then it's like, now we get to see if you can do the job, you know? Great assistance don't always make great head coaches. There's a long list of them who have not been successful that on paper look like they absolutely would be. But Tommy has knocked this thing out of the park from the jump. I'm not too in the weeds about how the Arizona fan base or Arizona former players feel about him. But the former players, they were pushing for a former player. When the coaching search to replace John Miller was underway. And they weren't all thrilled with Arizona reaching outside of its quote family. But I would just assume, as we sit here today, they're all on board now. Because they've got one of the best teams in the country. And it's sort of wild to think about. But there is a scenario and I'm not predicting this. But there is a scenario. Where the longtime Gonzaga assistant wins the national championship before Gonzaga as a program wins a national championship. Again, I'm not predicting it. I'm just saying, it's very much as of February 14th, 2022. It's very much on the table. Yeah. I think there's a chance we might be discussing that kind of storyline as we get into the NCA tournament. Again, we'll see how peace is fall where they may. I know you mentioned off the top talking about the two dominant teams out on the left coast and Gonzaga being the other one there, Gonzaga just, you know, they destroy say, I'm not surprised. They want by as many as they did. I mean, I think they hit just about the line Paris in that game. They won by 1674 58. That's what it was. It was the line 16? Yeah. It's just a joke there. I did a piece on chat homeground late last week for CBS sports dot com and then drew Timmy oh, by the way, goes out and Tammy has a way of having these performances and just reminding everyone of how good he can be. And the fact that Timmy had 25 and 8 with 5 assists in that game against saint Mary's. And it's just the way that Gonzaga plays. It just it comes so naturally. If Timmy wanted more than 30, he could have had it in that game there. And so I just keep coming back to with Gonzaga. And go with us, wherever you want. But the thing I kept coming back with Gonzaga is not just that yeah, here we go again like one of the best teams in the country. If not the best team in the country, they just can beat you in so many different kinds of ways. And they don't even need selfishly when you dedicate so much time into writing like a feature you'd prefer the subject to then go out and be awesome. Like the next game in the game after that game after that because it draws more attention to it validates what you did. But I didn't expect it from Chet holmgren. He had been awesome leading up to it, and that's why we timed it. It was like, all right, it's finally time to take the lid off the story and kind of put it out there. But Chad holmgren didn't need that either have a big game. And they don't need them to. That's the other thing. It's kind of what I hit on in that story. The very fact that Chet holmgren can be a threat to have a 25 12 and 5 kind of night actually makes Gonzaga that much more daunting to prepare for and play against. Chet holmgren can have nights where he doesn't do any of that stuff, frankly. And they didn't need him to do it against saint Mary's, which is one of the best teams they're going to play this season. Homegrown finished with 11 points, 13 boards and three blocks, and it was more than enough. He had an okay game for his standards, nem was good. Timmy was absolutely awesome. Gonzaga runs away with it again. And they are number one in your rankings and number one across the board in every predictive metric..

"They added a transfer from Gonzaga and obviously added a new coaching staff. And they have been terrific. Like it's wild to think that this team could also have James akinjo, who, of course, after last season, transferred to Baylor and has been one of Baylor's key players this season. You're right that they have a case to be top two in the country. I have them forth right now behind Gonzaga, auburn, Kentucky, and Arizona. And if somebody were asking me to justify that. I think auburn can you can still argue has the best resume in the country. I mean, there are 7 and two in quadrant one, 6 O one quadrant two, 13 and two inside the first two quadrants. That is better. Really, it's better than everybody in the country. Based on pure resume. You could argue reasonably that auburn still has the best resume in the country even after last week's overtime loss at Arkansas, auburn remains the only team in the country that hasn't lost in regulation. But Gonzaga's computer numbers at this point are so strong that I did elevate after auburn lost Gonzaga to the number one spot in the top 25 and one. So I've got it one Gonzaga to auburn and then three Kentucky for Arizona. And there's no getting around the fact that Arizona probably does have a better raw resume than Kentucky. I mean, Arizona is 6 and two in the first quadrant 5 and quadrant two. So 11 and two in the first two quadrants, whereas Kentucky's 5 and four in quadrant one, four zero and quadrant to some 9 and four in the first two quadrants. If I were trying to justify them, why Kentucky over Arizona at this point? I think they've got better wins. Like an 18 point win at Kansas, Kentucky has that an 11 point win at Alabama, Kentucky has that. Kentucky's also 14 and two in the past 16 games and the two losses are at LSU and at auburn. And they lost a starter in both of those games. They lost savior Wheeler against LSU. They lost Tai Tai Washington against auburn. So Kentucky's only lost twice this season when savior Wheeler and Thai Thai Washington, both start and finish the game. And again, that 18 point when it came to its massive. But this isn't something I would have a more than a 32nd argument about with anybody. If you want to have Arizona anywhere from two to four, I think it's totally reasonable, which underlines, I think your larger point at this moment, they're headed for a one seed in the NCAA tournament. And I keep hearing people say, oh, Gonzaga, Arizona. That's gonna be some west regional final. If they can both keep this up, they're not both gonna be in the west region. They're both gonna be one seat somewhere else. I thought about that very thing. Yes, Arizona is clearly tracking toward basically getting into a battle with Gonzaga about who would be the number one seed in the west. And you know, if Arizona can went out to asking a lot, I don't think it's gonna win out. Road games remaining at Utah at Colorado at USC home games remaining against the Oregon schools and then Stanford and Kyle then we get to the PAC 12 tournament. Arizona is almost certainly going to take at least one more loss to might even be reasonable at this point. And I don't think it would be more than that. But if it gets to selection Sunday with just three loss Arizona team versus a Gonzaga team that wins out with two losses, would actually be fascinating from a resume perspective because Gonzaga did not play a road game in non conference play. It's gonna actually because of the way the schedule broke against Gonzaga in league play like Gonzaga. I think a lot of people realize this. Gonzaga's only gonna play 14 WCC regular season games. Normally it will play 16. It's the two it's going to lose are both winnable, but they're on the road. I can't remember which ones they are. They might be. Anyway, they're both road games. So the point is they're going to lose two more road games, so when the committee is looking at, okay, we got to split Harris here between what teams are getting on the one line and what teams aren't and where we're going to ship them. Gonzaga's not going to have as many road opportunities road wins, non conference road games. That could ultimately wind up giving Arizona again, Arizona's got to get there with two or three losses probably to beat out a Gonzaga team that doesn't lose. But if that were to happen, then, you know, you want the west region if you're Arizona and Gonzaga. So that would be interesting. They could also end up one two in the same region. That's not unthinkable. Obviously, that would be quite the storyline that none of those men want Mark few and Tommy Lloyd don't want to face each other in the ancillary tournament, particularly in the first year where they're not on the same coaching staff together. But we'll see, again, we have a month to get there. We will get a little bit of a peek into this. This upcoming weekend and we'll talk about this on Friday show. The once a year, you know, it's not even mid season. We're now less than a month away to selection Sunday. Top 16 reveal on CBS will be Saturday at 1230, the selection committee is meeting this week and it will figure out a top 16. I'm going to talk to the chair Tom Burnett of this year's committee and there will be something on the site later this week in advance of that. But the point is, we'll see where they decide to ship both of these teams because Gonzaga plays Wednesday at pepper 9, figure that's going to be a win. They'll probably be the one in the west. Arizona does not play again until after the committee has done meeting. They play home against Oregon state, if they were to lose that, I guess they might make a late second change. But I think they decide that GP. On Thursday nights. As for Tommy Lloyd real quick, just on the whole what he has been able to do and accomplish here from a historical standpoint. He is going to have a really good chance. 22 wins right now, here are the only coaches to win 30 games in their first year as a head coach. His first year as a head coach of butler.

"And four on the season. Before we get to the zags, please enlighten us as your Saturday column did on how rare it is for a first year coach to be as successful as Tommy Lloyd is being this season at Arizona. Happy Valentine's Day, buddy. Happy Valentine's Day. You actually and you threw me, I got thrown for a quick loop. I don't know why I thought this, but I don't know in my brain when you logged on here for this podcast, I thought you were going to be in New York City, but you're flying later today. Yes. You're not there yet. Listen, I'm just twisted. My wife, God bless her. She's like, you know what? Just go and get me flowers, just get an assortment and that's all you need to do for me that's fine. I did a little something else on the side, but anyway, this morning, I had to get it done before we podcasts, so I show up to this florist and my man. Oh my goodness. 30 guys in that thing. I got back in time for this podcast. But Super Bowl Sunday would just, I don't know. Things got away from me. I'm rocking my humphreys McGee winter hat and apparently they played in Connecticut a few nights ago and two different guys and they're like, dude, were you at the show? Were you at the show? I do love me some Humphries. What's not at the show? And so they want to be talking about the set list and their gluten cat and all this stuff. Like 7 people know when I'm referencing anyway, the point is I was in such a squeeze. I was like, well, at least GP will be good to go because he's the New York City and then you're not you're at home. So anyway, hope you gotta understand. And these aren't even sponsors, perhaps they should be. Flowers dot com. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cherries berries. You just one night, you sitting around two weeks ago, watching basketball, you do the online order, it'll arrive on February 14th. And you saved. Now you do have to pay a little bit more. It's gonna cost you a little bit more. But how much extra money would you pay this morning to not have to do that this morning? That's a fair point, although I did, you know, I go to this floor. I've never been this spot before. It's a great spot. Actually a sizable building for a florist. I gotta be honest. And I picked all the flowers and then the bill comes up. I'm like, we sure about that. We sure about that price there. And sure enough, no, it's accurate. Very accurate. But happy Valentine's Day to everyone listening happy Valentine's to GP. And here we are. We are off and rolling on a rare Monday morning podcast. Yes, that's right. So anyone that came by that can't get to Sunday episodes. Welcome to a Monday, a.m. show. As for your question off the top with Arizona. So this is gonna be a trivia time for the listeners at home because I know GPR knows this because it was in my column. If you haven't read my column, you won't know the answer. So play along at home. Trivia time for the listeners is this and I will tell you the answer at the end of the segment. Tommy Lloyd right now has a team that is number two in multiple metrics, both predictive and results based Arizona has a great shot as we speak right now at getting a number one seat. They rolled Washington over the weekend, one 92 to 68. And with the 22 and two record right now, Arizona isn't a really good spot. And I think what Tommy Lloyd is doing here is up for legitimate consideration for national coach of the year, obviously he'd be on the short list. But if he can get Arizona to the one line on selection Sunday, which we are now less than a month away from, by the way, we are less than a month away from selection Sunday. He would become just the third coach in history to get a number one seat in his first season as a head coach period. Not first season with the program. No, first season ever as a head coach, only two other people have done it. You can play along internally. I'll let you know who the other two people were in just a little bit here. So Arizona at this point, I know you don't have them second overall, but my column basically said, Arizona has a very convincing case to be a top two team in the sport right now because of what they've been able to do. If you look at the metrics right now, they are fourth in torvik, but they are second in Ken palm. They were second in the net as of yesterday. Obviously, still are. So second in the net. Second is drink the record, second in camp, second and sagarin, second and BPI, they are fourth and KPI and they are fourth at torvik. So Arizona has a viable case. The only two losses on the road, Tennessee, UCLA, not only are those they were ranked teams when they played them ranked teams now viable, comfortable high seated NCAA tournament teams, Tommy Lloyd's been able to do has been outstanding. I don't want to say it's been overlooked Paris, 'cause it has not been overlooked. I mean, damn, I just wrote a damn column about it over the weekend, but at this point, I would have Tommy Lloyd national coach of the year. I say this as someone who's going to go see another prime candidate for that on Tuesday night with that coolie. I see what Bruce pearl is done. But because Tommy Lloyd just became a head coach, just took over this program, has his team sitting on the one line and per more metrics than not the second best team in the sport to Gonzaga. I would have him, again, this has ever so narrowly narrowly ahead of Bruce pearl and then head of Ed Cooley, but what he's done there has been well beyond expectation last point here. Because I think it can sometimes be easy just to think like, oh yeah, well, you know, they were going to have a good team that had a good roster. This team wasn't that great last season when they had Sean Miller and they had the postseason ban and they were not a rank group heading into the season. They were expected to be good, top three top four in the PAC 12, but not top 5 in the country good. What Tommy Lloyd's been able to do with this roster with this talent to get Arizona back in the mix of national relevance caught by status is pretty awesome. They did finish 29th at Kim palm last season under Sean Miller. I think we've talked about this before. They were a good team last season. We just never discussed them really or focused on the much because they weren't going to play in the NCA tournament. I don't want to say they were all people's radar, but we don't spend a lot of time talking about teams that aren't going to the NCAA tournament. But they finished 29th and then they returned azules to Bellas, bin Mather and Kirk, Christian colloquial. They returned 5 of their top 9 scores..

"I know you're laughing. Okay, screw you. Screw you. But you're an asshole. Wait, is this any different than the NDS stuff? It's no different. No, it is different. It is different. No. Because he said GM right now, he might hate being a GM. If he wants to go back and coach in the NBA tomorrow, he won't make the phone call and he will do that. Yeah. Yeah, I agree. I agree, but again, you got a call and you get a call his wife. Call his wife and just make sure. Just make sure that Louisville wasn't his dream job. She said Midwest guy, maybe he doesn't want to coach the Sacramento Kings or some other crappy NBA team. I don't know. Anyway, they're gonna say no, I understand that. What? Everyone wants to coach the Lakers. He actually could. I mean, I don't know. But the way they're going to treat Frank Vogel, which is good. Probably will it go too late. That's a good call. He doesn't want to deal with that drama. Trust me. Imagine Brad dealing with that drama. There's a lot going on out there. A lot a lot. Bruce pearl, I don't think it's a viable option, both ways. I don't think they would go after Bruce burle because of his NCA history. And I don't think Bruce pearl is going to leave armor. And I think he's going to leverage whatever he can to get his break the bank Bruce. Break the bank at auburn because you can't. Arbor will pay you whatever it is, as long as it's probably not more than the football coach. They'll pay you anything. And you'll be able to, again, stay at auburn for till you till you leave and then you're gonna try to get your son Steven the job as a coaching win. So those are the first ones Mick cronin. You gotta try them. You gotta try them. Listen, this is the rob. You can't start at the bottom. You're not gonna know. But none of those guys are coming to Louisville. You're gonna leave Los Angeles and UCLA? No. The final four and you have a team this year that can win again. You're taking over and you're taking over a program that has no talent right now. So it's a major major rebuilding job. It's not like Tommy Lloyd took over Arizona and was inherited a good amount of talent. Now he didn't know how good, but this program has frigging nothing right now. It's 15° in Louisville today. And it's 75 in Westwood. Where do you think he's going to stay? Yeah, good point. All right, my next call, not painter. I'm taking your coach. I'm taking your damn coach right now. Keep going. He's not going there. I'm going to offer Matt pain or 8 million a year. Million a year. Million. I'm not from 8 million at Louisville. What's Purdue gonna counter with? I'm not gonna count 8 million. But I think you would also look at this Louisville have an AD in this Lowell I'm.

"It's not Baylor. It's everybody. Freedom of movement died from last year to this year. These games are wrestling matches now. Yes. And I don't blame you. That's what you're getting now. I don't blame the coaches, but while we were all talking about Baylor's defense and we should, you know, Baylor scored 57 points. I know. Villanova's defense wasn't bad. Because they couldn't score. And I'm like, dang, we are back to the games in the 50s again. And that is not good for the game. I mean, I hope and look. I don't blame the officials. I blame the people who employ the officials. And so the rules committee, the competition committee, every supervisor, you have all failed in your failing. We have all failed and we need to admit it, because all this freedom of movement stuff is dead. And that's a bad, that's a bad thing for the game. I thought that I agree with you, Jay. And I thought that I found it interesting that Baylor could beat the villain over team when she is poorly as they did. I think guys like Kendall Brown, 6, 8, long armed, athletic, the way that he can cover ground and race mistakes, even as a freshman was really impressive to me. I got Matt Meyer, Matt Meyer, one of the leading scorers on the team. He goes one for ten. And they still win. So the versatility that they have amongst their wings and their forwards are really impressive and their ability to come around. And I think that's really what makes their defense so good this year because they don't have a guy like Mark vital. Mark Vita was the guy who was erased a lot of mistakes last year with his ability to be able to take charges, you block shots, et cetera. And I've been just really impressed with the two freshmen, including not always his name, Jeremy. Yes, okay. Those two dudes have added an element to that Baylor defense that's been really impressive here early. It's interesting you say vital because my first thought funds was davion Mitchell. How do you duplicate a defense without having that? I'm involved with pressure on the grapefruit and you know they've done it like those guys Villanova I've never seen them even last year against Baylor. I don't think I've ever seen them not be able to breathe. And they couldn't, they couldn't function. And that's really unusual. And they could have played better. I know that they could have played better and they could have handled it better. But I'm not sure who would have been Baylor that environment that day. The fellas, what I think is scary for Baylor, I don't think they're playing as well as they can play. You think about a guy like Adam flagler, for example, Flynn, 40 plus percent 3.0% shooter. This year she like in the mid 20s. And so I see so much room for improvement for the team. So how dangerous are they going to be come marching? We don't talk about, but the ability to switch and keep the ball in front and JTT is not a good ball screen defender. That he can switch, he covers he gets back. And they show. And when was the last time you saw Villanova play where I'll close out people didn't fly around on all those shot fakes in both things. Right. Like those guy, those guys, you talk about scatter report, defense. Those guys closed out hard. And all those shot fakes and ball fakes. They were down and in a state. They were like, they weren't flying all over the place. They make 12 defense across the board and agreed with what Jay said. The defense in the big 12 at a different level. But part of the reason is it's so it's so freaking physical. You know, speaking of another thing that's pretty physical. Arizona goes in Illinois. And wins. Illinois only has four guys score. I want to say that again. The only forecast score. It's hard winning with only four guys who aren't, but Arizona. And I keep on saying this, but you got to give Sean Miller. The roster that he left. Tommy Lloyd, Mather and Kirk Chris and coloco and I mean Cervelo's, I mean, but Tommy has done a great job of taking that and putting it in his own personality. But Arizona down fought its way back, defended. Yes. Man, he is special. And their team is special 'cause that thing never that thing moves. They explode up the floor. I mean, how good do you guys think this Arizona is? I think they're dynamic. And again, as I look back at a team from last year, even two years ago, well, really more last year. I'm looking for improvement. I think I've been putting up big time numbers and he certainly worthy of the comment that I compliment that I'm going to give. But Christian colloquis development from last year to this year has been freaking impressive. This is 7 foot one blocking shots all over the place. And in some ways, in some ways, I used to think he was uncomfortable and awkward when he caught the ball on the post or if he said a run out ball screen and kind of short rolled it. I always thought he was really uncomfortable in that space. And not this year. So they'd get now, you could buy him with the zoos to Bellas, who has the ability to be able to stretch it. Now you have complimentary fours and 5s. And I think those two make one of the best front courts in all of college basketball I've been really impressed. They'll be in the top ten all year long. They've got personnel and they play a style that the players clearly love because they can get up and down and score. But they can it's harder to slow them down, but if you get them in a half court game, they could still execute. And they're tough defensively. I mean, it's very much like what Gonzaga built. And while, well, Tommy Lloyd inherited some good personnel, they're playing a lot different than they did last year. Totally different. So it's a different. It's a totally different team totally different program. And.

"And I mean, they're all they're all getting after it. I mean, those guys, we know how to have a good time. I mean, that's not surprising to hear. I'd expect nothing less from the boilers. Yeah, we're gonna have to later in the year. You gotta let me know when you have a game at Mackie. I'm gonna have to. Come back out there because they're fun to watch. It sounds like Arizona's fun to watch in person. They really are. Do you worry about it? Go. What are you worried about with Arizona? Is it taking care of the ball? Yes. Taking care of the basketball. I think point our play. I think Turquoise has to be solid. But those two things certainly certainly are, I think also teams with not well, the thing that's the beauty of their defense, they're going to press you but they have colloquial direct. You know, so you can play that style because even if you get beep, you've got a freaking eraser behind you. So this is one of the best bigs that people haven't talked about in the country. No, I mean, he can score he's more than just lob black shots. I mean, you can throw him the ball on the block. He can make a close vote. Yeah, he can score with his back to the basket a little bit. He's gonna go right jump, but that's okay. I mean, no one's gonna block his shot. That's huge. Nobody in the pack 12. No, I mean, he's got an incredible wingspan. He's massive. He's also a progress to he cut a lob last night. He could have put in his elbows. Now listen, John Miller, John Miller left Tommy Lloyd with plenty. You saw it last night and Tommy Lloyd killed doctor Ross for lunch with those transfers, right? Paul Larson's going to be good. Like you said, you know, the kid from Georgia. He'll help him. But those guys don't have to do too much. So many cases, you're bringing in those transfers to have to be like major impact guys and case a point devonta Jones. Like right now he has to be an impact guy, because Frank Collins isn't ready to do it. And yeah. We also should say about Michigan, Seth Jackson, who played last year has been dealing with an illness, not COVID, but he hasn't been able to play, and I'm sure he was doing some conditioning and whatnot. They could use them. I mean, I don't know if he had the good game against exercise in the anti tournament where he made a couple of shots, but he's been in the program. I don't know. They got to find some other people that can score and so Caleb Houston maybe figures it out. Yeah, well, I mean, that's the question. How quickly are those freshmen and we talked about in the preseason? A lot of these guys were ranked. In a year when we didn't see them in. So we don't know how good buff can really is. We don't know. You know, like, I think, again, Caleb Caleb Houston is going to be very good. But yeah, I have your attention. All right. Let's move on. Couple more teams here before the close it out and you got to run. Step Carolina. I didn't get to get to watch the game. All right. So I mean, they fought for you. They did. They saw them. And then they later complete egg against Tennessee. And Tennessee was a team that had gotten absolutely blitzed by Villanova..

"If Mark few still had Tommy Lloyd, he had a ton of recruiting momentum. So number 5 for me is a guy that's the youngest looking 70 year old on the planet. That is Leonard Hamilton. I mean, the dude has done it. He knows how to get it done. He goes under the radar and he's just, I'm telling you, when you ask people around the industry, who they do not want to go up against. It is Leonard Hamilton. Like he just, he finds a way and he wonders his rankings the last I mean. It's been okay. Yeah, they haven't. I mean, they've done a great job honestly. No, they have evaluated. You know, Devin vasel, Patrick Williams, Michelle. Perfect guys the way he wants to play. No question about it. Exactly. So like they haven't really gone after that top ten kid like they did for a while there. But even back in the day rob and you're younger, might even be guys that are older than you. I think they are a few years older. I don't know if you remember the names Jason rich in Isaiah swan. Remember those names? Yeah. That's when I first kind of jumped in. Those were dudes. And like he was just getting guys. Isaiah swan was like a top ten player coming out of Maryland for a while. So I go Leonard at number 5. All right, so you're number four. See, you discarded Mark few. I did. Look at this. He's got two top 6 classes the last two years, two final fours the last 5 years. The data speaks for itself. Tommy Lloyd is gone, Robbie. Tommy Lloyd is in Tucson. Now, look into the future. I mean, we'll see. Time will tell. I'm going to mark a few of four because I think the momentum they're program has. Yeah. It's so substantial. I'll give you that. You're in a little. I mean, he's like, Kevin Durant, two..

You're not going to see the United Nations where guys like you have trouble pronouncing names, you know, I got Martinez Dollhouse kiss cuz I was over there and let them have that one named you nailed that and and yeah, so yeah, I mean, I think that's you know, the recruiting wise. I mean, I'm excited and I understand it might be a little bit different here. It can be different but you don't have to sacrifice on the character, you know the fit the work ethic dead. You know and then obviously talents part of that equation to you don't have to make sacrifices there. I don't think so. So hopefully I never do. All right, we'll listen take your family over to Gentle bends down take him to dirtbags tonight. Okay, when I come out I'll take you to dirtbags, but do not do not bring your family to dirtbags. And what is the thing you're going to miss the least from being conformed. I mean in the most there was so many things. I mean him and I had obviously you work with a guy for twenty-two years. Tommy Lloyd Is the Next Coach at Arizona

"Matt. Norlander is here with me in. Arizona has found shaun miller's replacement deadline when we talked about this after shawn miller was fired. We went through a list of candidates. And i think we sort of settled on the end of the day. I think it's going to be a gonzaga associate head coach. Tommy lloyd or former arizona star current pacific head coach damon stoudamire fast forward to today. It is tommy lloyd. He is leaving gonzaga. He will be the next head coach of the wildcats. Your thoughts. yeah. We have a listen. We have a long time coach in waiting for program legend. Who's been there decades deciding to leave and and and take a job in the pac twelve and It's mike hopkins all over can don't just kidding. But the parallels are actually there will credit an unnamed person. We both know who who made that to made. That comparison this i think is a pretty good higher now. This has been buzzed about. Since before shawn miller got fired. I have talked to a couple of people out for your. Oh quick i get your thoughts on it. There are a couple of people i've talked to. Who will never be not convinced. That tommy lloyd was approached about this like a month ago and basically said we want you to be the next coach in gonna fire shawn miller. I'm not saying that happened. I'm telling you there are people that believe this and this has been wired for a long time now. There were a couple of days here the past couple of days where the search kind of went on a not a pause but they topped the brakes through more interviews. That happened on tuesday. And they did legitimately interview miles. Simon damon stoudamire. Jason terry josh passenger. All these people were interviewed. There's a belief that eric muscleman whose doors to get himself his own new contract which if true or not. I don't think he needed arizona to get paid the way he got paid. But good on him. So
