"Let him get his own. You didn't go get eighty if you let jews points you whenever the common thing is eliminate this and you just can't because of how smart he can't world graves podcast agency. We need to talk about the info draft down. But we can't talk about nine to noon on saturday sirius. Xm eighty four is a my show was the special guest is always said greenberg and ladies and gentlemen we might have a segment if he comes on this saturday where you can place your bets on the golf match coming up. In two weeks at the greenbrier there might be odds-on that will be that will be a very very big match. That would be a latch. 'cause she i think that you and your partner. I our stay with my man coach lying. My hockey by coach frenette it. This will be a very big match. Should i want to work on my craft. The next two weeks because it comes and goes if you donate to. I know what you mean. That's my whole life comes and it goes go. Kelly clarkson go to indiana sports corp dot org slash dockage cycles for the city. Go greenberg wedding. Go rate us a five. That's what i'm talking about. Keller our has done excited to welcome in coach. Tubby lloyd new head coach at arizona and at first of all -gratulations. I think this is like one of the coolest tires of the year. Because i you know researched all the stuff about you said the one place that you would leave inzaghi for when you were. The coach waiting was arizona and that became reality when they approached the first thing. That went through your mind really. Wow yeah my mind so you did and you know. They said they weren't gonna be a ton of candidates and i was one of them. You know i talked my wife. And i said all right. We're going to do this. Because i kind of wanted. Wrap my head around making the decision. If i got offered i was going to accept it you know or not pursue it know and slow so we ought in you know with with our son being phoenix and you know and two daughters at a decent aged move. I mean not perfect every time when growing up but we feel comfortable with it. And then i mean come on it's arizona so you put all those other we were like. Let's do this. You want to find out is The girls dealt they'll figure it out. We moved three times at rs We went from long beach to tampa to blacksburg. And actually my. My youngest one ended up our last year in avon connecticut it's They figured out there almost like military kids You guys have to set. Grades scrape ability You know there was so much you know. I've been through this three times. But there's not in your situation because let's face it. It really traditional senate amber players. Dave had great success with one national championships with and they selected you. And you know there's a faction of people like an any job that so you know we want one of our own guys. How difficult is that. The kind of navigate. Now that you're sitting in that chair trying to kind of plant seeds you kind of get on the same page well to me. I get that those former players want one of their own and if their former players were saying. We don't wanna hire ex teammate. We wanna hire tommy lloyd. I'd say that would be pretty strange. So so i'm totally get it in. Listen i come from a great family up at gonzaga and how much pride those guys have You know so once it was me. It hasn't been that difficult. The guy has been great. I mean all the all the a lot of players already reached out to me on their own and talk to me and gave me their support. You know the guys. I've reached out a bunch of other guys and now gray conversations at the end of the day. I don't want this to be about me. You know. I want it to be about arizona basketball in so if i could create an environment in a culture where those guys are honored in when they're watching in arizona game with their kids or their grandkids. They're feeling immense pride. That's what i want. I don't want to. I want to kind of remove myself from the equation. I wanna help everybody come together and get this thing roland. And then i want to kind kinda step off stage left and then coach the team and then let the arizona tradition and these guys is bride. Carry forward from assistant to head coach. i was forced to do that at long beach. State joe harrington move to colorado. I see it's a different. It's a different job but you know the hardest thing is to find balance you know. I mean because there's so many people now you work with a guy that had the most incredible ballots in the history like he calls me one more time while he's well watching. I'm i'm gonna lose. Are you know that picture of him. And his his lake house. Or whatever you know i mean how do you find that balance. We so much to do well. I have spent lots of time about lake counts with him out on the dog. I know the place well and my kids spend all summer. there isn't that amazing spot Yeah i mean you know he. He definitely has like were hobbies than i. Do you know fishing pickle ball stuff like that might hobby doing vassals people. I love spending time with people conversation you know sitting around fire. Or whatever so Obviously i know balances can be tough to get started here. Because i'm a relationship guy. So i wanna get relationships with everybody around here in a natural and i operate at my best so i'm kind of putting extra effort into that right now but eventually want to have those relationships established. I mean i love basketball. I love thinking basketball. I love coaching basketball of mind watching sale. You know so. I guess that kind of is my hobby in in in in you know. Maybe that's a sickness but But it's kind of what i've always done. So i'm going to start on that path. Minute starts beating me down. then i'll adjust at. You gotta be mean like. I was very much like you. I was not a person with a lot of outside interests. Except for my family. I was basically a cocoon but then i am. My brother was like few who when he was coach. Brad like he was ice tacoma renaissance. Man he goes. You're so simple. I said well. I just want to get players. Coach players make successful works. Best that way. You know. Speaking of that i i. Also anything just fasten. I had no idea how you start during the national thing but you're a world class traveler. I guess i heard that story. That is fascinating. How just the idea of traveling internationally. And then t we basically saying you know we. We gotta find me a little bit different than mitch. This might be an area that you might pursue. How long ago was that. But that would have been like in two thousand right around there. You know twenty some years ago and You know. I traveled for that. My family had always ad exchange students. So i had a fascination with other cultures in the end. You know traveling so interesting because most people are like. Oh my god. We're going to europe. I mean that's a ten hour flight. You know way and i always looked at like ten hours and i'm i'm halfway across the world that's amazing so why we took that approach and whenever i land in europe get off that plane in smell. That cigarette smoke. I feel like i'm home. yeah. I always enjoyed traveling. I mean i i mean i haven't been obviously been in a couple years because kobe but Yeah i miss get over there and just have so many great relationships rate friends and seat so many cool places that you know. I don't look at it as a burden. I look at it as a an honored and opportunity. What's your favorite place over. Obviously you've had players from all over. Yeah obviously sometimes. It's tied into that special play can add special player. But what's your state. You just like when you go to go out this is i think if you're.

"All are usually downplay that. Because i you know you and i've been in the business long enough to know guys say well i'm gonna get my buddy to come to play with me and that rarely happens over history going back rarely rarely conley and owed went to ohio state. But you hear that all the time. I've always thought it's not gonna have nowhere about now. I do think it is because of exactly what you said when you look at the nba. And i'm going down to the barest level. Why do guys in college. Where the allen. Iverson sleep. Because alan eisenson work. Why do guys in college come off the bench and put the towel on their head or put the towel on their legs because they see. Nba guys. Why do you guys get the ball in the post and go like this before they met because they see got they'll know what the hell don't they just know that guys in the nba. The super team thing is an nba thing. That one thousand percent is coming. Maybe it's already here. Maybe that's what dukes done you know with reddish and was it better by barrett and williamson. Maybe they already did. Maybe kentucky's already done it. But it hasn't been publicized. Think it's absolutely coming. And i hope when it comes i open team. Like baylor. beats their aunts. Baylor's good job talking about baylor. Freddie glaspie copy as who's now in the nba. You talk david mitchell. Translator talk about mesa t- transfer. I mean they they. Bilbao guys sat out but they built their program. People understand when you sit out you also get a better understanding of the system artem. What's expected you when you merge yourself aniela you play the free mind like years guys sitting out like they make every shot by a dockage will be. You're gonna to be radic at home. So could you could make a shot. Also co ops grades bad. He makes an a gain actually confidence Which which is aboard last thing. What's just the other day you know. What some correlated to the nba. Kevin durant is so efficient offensively. It's ridiculous Like everyone wants. Try to find a player to emulate like kevin durant than dribbles. Actually out of date. It was amazing. That dude gets shout one and two dribbles and a lotta times. No germs like by move without the ball like by covering ground when he throws the ball at just a quick change of direction. Hit a spot. Elevate looking Ted long arms. Get quick release all that stuff but by we'll try to copy someone like instead of like copying the guy that's just handle it do it all this crazy stuff. That's like being efficient. Offensively is the most under appreciated thing in basketball. And and and to me. You call what you want. I mean we have you know. We have different levels of ball screen. Engaged a guy. Well you get you get you set the guy up. I don't care about whether you're audible audible. You set you set a cut up. I mean that's what you do with your on the ball. You get the guy leading if you can get late and then you can set all screaming. Make two people player. You could force the defense until biden and you read the guys away from the basketball. Who tagging rose what they're outlets their coverage but when we look at so many things about a different guys the efficiency of playing with purpose i just watching durant watch more embraced he. That dude is so purpose foldaway place. Funny bring that up. We didn't talk about this before we went on here. He scored forty two last night against the pacers and i was kind of watching between that and the nba draft or the nfl draft. And said i was watching without the sound. And i swear to god i was thinking the exact same thing in fact. We're taping this little bit early in morning. So i'm going to go back. I was going to do this anyway. But you brought this up. I'm going to go back and see how many dribbles tuck. I'm not talking about if he had to bring the ball up. Maybe the patients pressure. I was going to do that. I was going to see how many dribbles this guy took last night. Because i'm sitting there watching it. And i'm not watching it real close but i know this. I'll be shocked if he took forty dribbles to get forty two points crummy shock to be took thirty. I'm talking about in half court offense now. okay. I'm not talking about you. Know pacers are picking up full court you throw it to drain. He brings it across. You kicked. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about once. They get into a situation seth. I'm telling you funny. Said that. Because i saw last night and do the doot scored forty two with outbreaks sweat bi-lo and that's just understanding how to play. I mean that's standing have played catching in a spot holding a guy off waving on a screen going and actually putting the ball out by the defense and all the things that you're learning camp. You know that that you know that we used to emphasize all the time But now Dribble tennis balls were were doing pobox gig. That's great. Here's maybe the best offense in the nba and he's just like i'm just sitting there watching them go. This dude is so ridiculously efficient. That's the guy we need to be shown like. I'm a coach. I'm sure my wing guys back and say that's who you should try to play like off the ball. I mean he off the ball. He's ridiculous he here. The one thing about good off the ball players is they. Don't look at all you know. They look at the defense. They read the defense and then they find the ball and then you got to have a guard smart enough not to give it up until the guys ready being a point guard or being the guy with the basketball on offense when got when you have a cutting moving team is really difficult. 'cause you got a guy hanging on to deliver the ball on time on target all that kind of stuff they do really well in durant makes himself available. And i'm i'm shocked because let's be honest so i know that i know that that's have a really good team and i know some guys that hurts guys guys out. But if i'm if i'm scott i'm jumping on top kevin durant. I'm saying look.

thirty david mitchell Freddie glaspie scott kevin durant Kevin durant alan eisenson Ted forty dribbles williamson aniela forty two points two people forty two Iverson Bilbao one half ohio state one thousand percent

"Me that we should get more people. That are coaches involved in things. And i'm not talking about basketball or football coach. I'm talking about anybody. Anybody that has sense and cares. We just have people that are external. An external is not very good. When you're making these kinds of decisions has by the now arvidsson one time. Transfer exception is is one pro and it's going to be in play here. Here's my fame. How long will it be before. Like you gotta understand like like. The kid leaned robbins to kit at minnesota. Are he transferred right. So now he's transferring. Get so he's going to have to appeal for waiver. I guess is my understanding unless everyone gets away this year so how long will be before every set second time. Transfer appeals for waiver in Basically you know we lose our minds on it because You know wait a second year. What why should this could be to transfer while we've put the rule in for the one time traffic central. We're going to have two thousand people are transportable. there's no doubt about it We have fifteen hundred now at the end of the first summer session before july. One when guys were back on campus. Maybe they don't get things the way they wanted your Another wave of transfers. And that's just the way it is said that bringing their does back for for some recession. They don't want to deal with it or they do that. I can do anything competitive. They're just flat out skill. Works shooting concept work. Five auto. nothing where you're hitting on each other because they don't want to upset the apple cart which is such a sad thing when you think about it so basically afraid to coach your team. I mean that's basically it is basically. You're afraid to help someone get somewhere to get can't get themselves to challenge someone to set a standard wholesome to a standard. Because you're afraid that you will upset that person and therefore lose them prior to july one. There's something wrong with that but you're gonna have two thousand people that's gonna be four players minimum of four players team for players team. That'll be transferring. It in no. I think of it is what it is but it just seems to me like the the waiver process of a second time. Transfer is going to create the same problem we had before we had the one time. Transfer exception which your thoughts. My thoughts are exactly right. I mean look we. i mean. we're going to start having guys appeal. And then they're going to grant appeals because they don't want to be challenged and away we go. My wife and i were talking about this. The one thing that she did say though and maybe you know sports are different. I get all that. But she did say that you know what women saw always had the one time trance remediated eligibility and it never rose to okay. We want another wave in for a second transfer basketball different than softball football different than basketball. I get on that. I think you're right a makes us to see how it all plays out. But i can't see a situation. Where in basketball. A second transport doesn't ask for away and i can't see a situation where a year two years from now where the powers on television and you know start. Whining about kids should be able to transfer a second time. I absolutely agree with you. I don't think it's good. I think is great for right now. But i never thought and i actually never thought this is a player. I never thought going to college about right now. I always thought going to college was about the future and i always thought that going into college wasn't instant gratification. We think it's instant gratification. Now and i'm going to be curious five seven years from now when you talk to some of these guys and if you can get them to talk on sleep and did all this transferring and they look back on. It wasn't a good thing. The one thing that i i laugh at is i hear our colleagues say well a one time. Transfer going through in the world is still on its axe. Well you know what the world was on its axis with. We had a year to sit out. The world was on its actions when we had waivers. I laughed so hard at at that kind of stock well. The sky hasn't fallen because we've allowed transport sky wasn't following. Would we didn't allow a one time. Transfer so i really curious because i've said with a million times on our podcast. Every single play that transferred in or transferred out and i was involved as a coach whether our play whether we Bowling gray or whether it was at indiana said the best year they had for growth was the year they sat out. That's them not me. Not you not anybody in the media. That's them and i'm curious to see a year from now five years seven years from now. What what kids with a one time. Transfer feel really. Yeah interesting to me. It seems like trading places you've got guys transfer within leagues you've got guys got leading scorers transferring and you look. Here's what i think's going to happen. You're going to see one or two powerful personalities as players try to create what we always mimic the. that's for sure. Try to create super teams of transfers. Sure and i really believe that. That's good that's going to be the next step in the coach that gets ahead of that and says right. Who who's the guy that stirs the drink. Who's the guy who's the guy that was the best biggest voice who's the guy that other people wanna play with our viking. Get him He can then basically recruit me help recruit me a class of transfers. Does that make any sense. Because i.

fifteen hundred minnesota arvidsson two thousand people this year july one five seven years two years first five years four players Five auto one One one time one pro second year two powerful personalities second time one thing

"Is up in arms. About mach te getting an extension and if people are up in arms about our effort getting extension. Then let's put. Our veneman are why were upset in the right direction. The board of governors the answer aa makes decision on who gets extended his contract which is made up of member institutions. Also some people outside the basic college presidents some college athletic directors in some others. The others including guy like grant hill on that on that. Who's on that board. So i mean like it isn't my so you know i decided i'm gonna i'm gonna continue to be Presidency got blais. It's basically this board decided that they wanted to extend him a contract extension. So if you're upset about that the upset at the bore be upset at the members of the board be upset of the presence universities upset with the grand tails and the other people that are involved in the decision making process. Don't be upset with the guy that basically was offered. He didn't he didn't offer himself. He was offered an extension because of the board of governors. And no one else. So i don't know. I just subprimes. We blame blame. Blame blame blame. And it doesn't make any sense like this process that that did everything needs to go through. And that was the process of hiring or extending a president of the incident late. I i just don't i don't get it i'm outta mark amherst fan i. I don't know i don't like him. I don't dislike him. I think he's got a thankless job. Is utah beach one. two three. You're talking about the big hundred fifty seven schools. That play basketball does not allow commonality in terms of everything. That's going on. I think it's a thankless job. But i just i just i don't get it sometimes well in our world you know this. Nobody's going to criticize grant. Ill why is grant hill on their. Why robert gates on there. The only reason robert gates former defense secretaries on there is because he went to indiana university and everybody smart went to indiana university. That's the only thing i can say. Nobody criticizes nobody's ever. I'm spreads condoleeza rice listed on there as she liked to guru. Here's the deal that. I don't understand whenever i see these things and if the nc double a.'s. So broke into Fine if that's what people wanna think i think. Ncw frankly gives great opportunities to kids at otherwise. What have i think they give a ton of of. And i think that made a difference in a lot of people's lives and i think mark cameron. I'm with you. I don't care for 'em discount for all i know is is he does. What roger goodell dutt's. He takes all the bullets from all the guys and gals that haven't been in a locker room for thirty years yet. Know everything about the goings on and what should go on the nc. Aa he takes all the bullets and dozen fire back and that's his job and he's paid handsomely for it but i'm so totally with you. It's the easiest thing in the world you know when it doesn't go the way you want lack of leadership. Aren't you criticize hill. I'm waiting for all of our colleagues to say well he'll never going to say that. Be the easiest thing is a man mark embree. it's joe But it was seems to be. We have backs like it seems to me that we should get capable that are and have been in locker rooms on these deals. It seems to.

I I I'm going to support him. 100%. I texted him and told him I would be happy to help Anyway, I can and I'm gonna support him, and I hope he does a great job beyond that. Who knows? Yeah, That's what I said. I go. He's not ahead code so I can't get a Has no track record there. I know Gonzaga was really good, but that's mark Few's program. No matter how much you helped build it, it's a it's a big jump that six inches from assistant coach toe. Head coach, some with you Wait and see what happens And then judge it of that. I hope he does. Well. I hope the recruits keep coming and we get back to where we should be. And other than that, I just just have to wait and see is basically what it Yeah, I mean, and you think about you know, you seal a hard make crone and I think He was like their fourth or fifth choice, and he just took him to the Final four. And Pete Carroll was like us ES, You know, fifth choice and he was the best best coach they ever had. Probably. And then there are other coaches who People thought we're gonna be a home run, and they didn't didn't turn out so well. So I don't think you ever really know. And you just saw all you do is you You. You you hope for the best, But as far as you know, you and I are concerned that we're gonna We're gonna give him every bit of supporting he needs And, you know, whatever that means. I don't know. Price still mad about that boot on my car that they had to pay for it, So I don't know. Like whatever. Good point. Uh, let's get to James wise, but I know you're not gonna have any updates until September. What I wanted to ask you because I think this offseason for him is going to be really important. And unfortunately, that's not going to include on the court playing and practicing, getting good to go to Summer league and learning all that stuff. Game speed. I'm sure when the time is right, you'll have him out on the court. Walking through stuff does use mentally imagining, you know, were to go on rotations and what we do in this situation, watching a lot of film. I mean, how important is that going to be if you can correlate the importance of this summer and his ability to absorb some of this stuff without actually playing As to how much it'll be impactful for him next year. Yeah, we're going to do every bit of that as much as we can, anyway, um, to try to help him, But it is. It's such a bummer. I mean it. You know, he missed all that last summer because of the pandemic, Summer league and, you know, training for a couple of months with our training staff, and it was just Such a shame that you know, now two summers in a row. He's not going to get that that foundation that he really needs. So hey, did have a A really productive promising season and a lot of ways. I know you know, His performance was Up and down. However, you want to describe it, but he showed a lot of promise and For someone so young with so little experience, I thought he really, you know, started to Lock in on things, and he was feeling more and more comfortable about what you know What he really needs is, is just, you know, time and experience on the practice for and and on on the main floor, and it's just such a shame that That's going to be cut back right now. Man was I told people I said, Look, go! Look at Kobe. Go looking kg. Go looking tomorrow. Go look at Tracy McGrady ago. It's it's a different world. When you're that young playing a game that involves men, and the game is faster of the game is more physical. Maybe not his physical that was back then, but still physical. Game, and there's so many things that are going through your head. It's it's hard to slow it down and fair it out. Just okay. What What can I really use and then really focus in on to make myself an impactful player. That's consistent, but it's not. That it's hard for rookies that go to college. I mean, I would say it's damn near impossible for guys to go straight from high school, which is basically what he did in come in and have any kind of consistent. Season, But that's just the way people are. Now. They expected to hit the ground running and you're good to go and it just it didn't work that way. Even for some of the greats of the game, it didn't work that way. Now you're right. I mean, especially big guys to his big guys just take longer to develop, they take longer to catch up to the speed of the game Guards. I think it's a little easier for them. Tonto kind of figure it out because they're, um, generally gonna be faster and more mobile to start with, Um, and you know, just the style of play these days, too. It's so perimeter oriented, so it's It's tough for a big guide of to just come in without any experience and just go from there. So, um, you know, I I look at guys like you mentioned kg. Um, you know, I liked it. You know Jermaine O'Neal? I don't think really played any It's like I mean, he played he played. He didn't really start getting into the rotation until about his fourth year. He might have had to leave Portland to go to Indiana to to actually get into the rotation. So Um, you know, it just it takes time. That's the bottom line. It takes time. And, um It's we'll just see how you know everything plays out with this summer, but it's just a shame. We can't get him that extra time that he needs on the practice for Knowing that that there is no substitution for playing. What can you guys do for him this summer to help his growth and development? Can you only watch so much film and tape Or is that going to be the only substitute? Well, well will do that..

Jermaine O'Neal Pete Carroll Tommy Tracy McGrady Indiana 100% Portland tomorrow James next year fourth Tommy Lloyd September last summer First six inches two summers Gonzaga this summer fifth choice

"Bunch shos xavier mcdaniel like it did have a little bit of a moment there Little more than three decades ago those five. The american athletic conference needs four of those five. Ideally all fi but really four of those five to be in contention to make the instability tournament to give the league. It's best chance. Not just at relevance but at true contention at at sitting at the table with the big east the pac twelve not to mention the likes of the big ten in the big twelve and all that stuff mushtaq statement the tournament. This past season houston would it. Did we talked about that. Memphis wednesday the nit now cincinnati. It gets a coach who would seemingly be capable of getting back into that conversation remember. It made tournament nine. Straight years under mick cronin. We're not surprised by that. Were just sharing the facts for everyone that doesn't want to acknowledge he's the greatest coach in ucla history and cincinnati. History not needs to pull off temple. We wait and see. Aaron mckie john Johnny former flare. Now that's running that program. I would love. Love love to see temple. Get back to national relevance there but you get four the five and you've got a chance to league. I think west miller has a good entry point here from a leak standpoint from a roster standpoint this is going to be a grind and a half. It's one of those things where Listen you get a better job. A bigger paycheck. It's really great. Career accomplishment You check in with miller and that staff in the middle of july and it's just not gonna be a fun job like all things put pushed aside it's going to be a grind for the next year minimally and i do think that with is actually built to to embrace that kinda grind and he's got a really good chance at succeeding there. If you're cincinnati have in cincinnati fan. Be thrilled that you got this done quickly. By the way like compared to arizona who now the ad ran the search search firm. No one else got involved. It was he ran it. He got in his interviews. Done they move with the swiftness. They wanted to get this done as soon as possible. And i was told on tuesday that they wanted to get this done by wednesday night and sure enough. They did you get west miller. He is top three top five mid major rising coach in the country as far as the The industry is concerned and that is a good get. We can't promise you we're gonna look up in four years in west miller is going to have taken in three and simply tournaments At four years can't promise that but he's young and he still super hungry and I if you if if you can win big with him you'll have done a wonderful job and there won't be too many jobs likely that That will pluck them. I'm not gonna say there aren't any clearly like if you davis is just okay. Five years from now. west. Miller has it going at cincinnati. You better believe that. The west miller to carolina noise. We'll resurface once. Again in fact if not solidify. This'll be the job that in effect. I mean if we're talking real real here like what's miller takes a shot for many reasons. One of them is if he's good at it. He makes sure that he is the number one candidate for north carolina if it should open again in the next ten fifteen years while he's still in the prime of his career. That's exactly right because if he's good at this job then he's been good at two jobs and he's been good at the high major level and when north carolina is looking for. Its next coach. That's anytime in the next lesson. He's thirty eight years old. We to talk about the north looking for new coach and five years to do with. Caroline is looking for a new coach and fifteen years like in west miller. Be in a position to be that guy. I know synthetic fans don't to hear talk about. Your new coach was back right laying going back to chapel hill someday. But like if he's if he's it isn't gonna go one or two ways you ready. He will either not be good. And you'll fire him some or he will be good and he'll be a candidate for north carolina sunday. That's just the way this is gonna go so it is what it is but i would say like you're right. He is inheriting a mess. A mess mess and it's it's going to be paying to get this thing rebuilt. I will say you'd much rather inherited a mess at a place. Like cincinnati league like the did inherit a mess at a bad job in a better league. Like i don't want to describe boston. College is a mess. I don't even know if it is. I just know it's a bottom. Acc job and that's hard you know when you are in that in that league. It's hard to win at boston. Even when you get it where you want it hard to win a ball tagalog that that's the real grind. 'cause you don't know if you'll ever get it where where you needed to be. It's it's difficult. penn state. the big ten. That says another one like that's you you're building from the bottom and boy you got some real monsters in front of you in the top job. Yes yeah you're starting behind a lot of like since as roster next season he'll be worse than a lot of people's in the ac's but probably not as many as you think because there's some really bad stuff in the afc and the climb is just much easier you can just like dan. Hurley had to rebuild yukon. That's a pain but it's yukon. You'll get that done..

Caroline five years tuesday cincinnati fifteen years wednesday night Hurley four years chapel hill five Memphis One Miller mick cronin next year penn state Aaron mckie john Johnny two jobs north carolina Five years

"I think you'll be able to fix that over time. And just like it took arizona along time to hire tommy. Lloyd won't matter if he does the job well that some of the former players aren't initially supportive won't matter if he does well but it does salk like if you're tommy in the past twenty four thirty six hours you're probably considering this job and trying to see if you can it down and you're excited about may and my first head. Coaching job is going to be at at arizona. And then you're like on twitter and you know there's gilbert arenas crapping on you and richard jefferson at the very least not being enthusiastic about you. I would imagine when you take your first head. Coaching job particularly such a high profile place. ideally you would want everybody to be excited about you. I mean you'd want you'd want to jump on a zoom with the alumni and introduce yourself if you don't know them and them a coach whatever you need. I'm here to help you. I just want to see the program. Do you love to have that right from the job. And he's clearly not going to have that in the issue is because as you laid out at sometimes when a job opens and there's a push to keep it in the family you just go. We're like who. Who do you want us to hire. There's not great options in the fan. There were reasonable options within the arizona. Family like davis donna. Morrow was a reasonable option. Josh pastor was a reasonable option miles. Simon was a regional. A reasonable option at the very least those three and the players wanted one of those guys. My understanding just like you is different. Players were pushing for different guys but by and large they wanted one of those guys and they also wanted to be involved in the process and the epa director apparently just didn't involve them in the process and then hired outside of the family. It's so tommy's got a walk right into that again. Not ideal probably sours the whole thing just a little bit. But i don't think it's a reason to not take the job. And i don't think it's a reason to not hire him. And if gilbert arenas wants to be a jerk on social media about somebody he's never met than let him be a jerk on social media about somebody he's never met because that's all he's doing like he says things like no urine assistant coach as if no assistant coach has ever successfully been a head coach in his first job. Brad stevens was an assistant coach. That worked out okay. Once roy williams was assistant coach. That worked out okay. So it's possible to get good jobs from the assistant coaches chair and and become great immediately. And tommy does it and certainly i. I'm of the belief that he will He won't be the first and he won't be the last. So if you wanna be. I would have more respect for somebody who actually knows tommy and then just said listen. I've known this guy fifteen years. I'm just telling you. I don't believe in him as a head coach at the university of arizona. I could listen to that. But from somebody who doesn't know him and then it dismisses him based on the fact that he's just quote an assistant. That's that's nonsense to me. Yeah i hear you. I'm wondering when we look up in four years from now. Which program is going to be impacted more by this arizona or gonzaga. And i think the answer will be arizona. I think arizona is going to. I'm not going to sit here in in project. That tommy lloyd's gonna get arizona back into the top ten of the ap top twenty five or anything like that. I think there are. I think you would agree that there are too many potential variables with sanctions. That could have enough overarching impacts. That will restrict what lloyd can do. Because let's face it if they do wind up getting a postseason ban even they've had a self imposed one even if they get another one. That kind of stuff is going to impact what you can do. But but i don't know you like he's been. He's regarded as an elite. I'm talking like top three assistant in the country reason. Mark viewed received the lion's share of the credit. And that's fair. But you and. I both know that. Tommy lloyd particularly over the past decade has has put just as much into that and as justice responsible as marcus. He ha- tommy. Loyd has been the one that has been grinding on the recruiting trail Domestically and internationally for a decade and. He is often times. And i said this. Hq earlier the the assistance will grind and the head coach will close. And while that is certainly also happened with gonzaga mark. Few tommy lloyd. Though his actually closed he is actually been the closer for plenty of prospects and players that you know and that helped them make the title game this year. The title game. Two thousand seventeen sweet sixteens in the middle of all that and even before that it hasn't just been marked view and tommy lloyd's been kind of coasting along. No he has been as close to a co head coaches. I think anyone in the country and now that mark few is losing him That'll be interesting to see because mark view is in the winter of his career. I think he's got anywhere from three to seven eight years left however long he wants to go he can go but he just lost his top guy and i i'll be interesting. How that you know. How impacts gonzaga going forward gp It can still be great. I think still will be great. But i think losing tommy lloyd will will certainly have an impact on the program going forward. I don't think there's any question about that. It's interesting because you ask a question. Like what program will be impacted. More arizona gonzaga. Here's the truth. I'm.

"Matt. Norlander is here with me in. Arizona has found shaun miller's replacement deadline when we talked about this after shawn miller was fired. We went through a list of candidates. And i think we sort of settled on the end of the day. I think it's going to be a gonzaga associate head coach. Tommy lloyd or former arizona star current pacific head coach damon stoudamire fast forward to today. It is tommy lloyd. He is leaving gonzaga. He will be the next head coach of the wildcats. Your thoughts. yeah. We have a listen. We have a long time coach in waiting for program legend. Who's been there decades deciding to leave and and and take a job in the pac twelve and It's mike hopkins all over can don't just kidding. But the parallels are actually there will credit an unnamed person. We both know who who made that to made. That comparison this i think is a pretty good higher now. This has been buzzed about. Since before shawn miller got fired. I have talked to a couple of people out for your. Oh quick i get your thoughts on it. There are a couple of people i've talked to. Who will never be not convinced. That tommy lloyd was approached about this like a month ago and basically said we want you to be the next coach in gonna fire shawn miller. I'm not saying that happened. I'm telling you there are people that believe this and this has been wired for a long time now. There were a couple of days here the past couple of days where the search kind of went on a not a pause but they topped the brakes through more interviews. That happened on tuesday. And they did legitimately interview miles. Simon damon stoudamire. Jason terry josh passenger. All these people were interviewed. There's a belief that eric muscleman whose doors to get himself his own new contract which if true or not. I don't think he needed arizona to get paid the way he got paid. But good on him. So

"All right talking to bruce pascoe the arizona daily star about what happened to shawn miller. Today was fired at arizona after a long run with the cats in tucson and frankly Like i said by the way they just marash just knocked out to meet johnson. That's it round to boom. Knocked him out got on top of him and just clubbed him to death. He's done so there. You go to champ wins. I'm stunned mafia. A horrible disqualification and then the main event was a disaster as well. Thank god turner channel down with it. Anyway bruce sorry about so. Here's the deal. I'm watching these fights. I got all this stuff going on while. We're doing the show. As i said before to you all these names the litany of names. Tommy lloyd kazak damon stoudamire miles simon et cetera et cetera. I don't believe to be honest with you eric. Musselman's going to get the job at arizona. He's got a great job at arkansas. I do not believe he's leading that quick to go there. It's not steve. Alford leaving new mexico. I don't believe frankly mark pope's getting that job either To be honest with you they remind me of a little bit of. I know sean millerton planners well i guess he did like what he transferred there or something like that when he was a kid. I can't remember. All i know is north carolina and they stay in the family. You know miller. Didn't he actually played here for pit arizona zone in a an a holiday tournament back in the early nineties and told us the story about how he'd just thought it was so cool he saw zona players leaving the game on their skateboards and it was seventy five and sunny and he was like damn. This is a great place. So that's why. I think that maybe had a little bit to do with why he took the job in the first place but But yet to speak to what you said actually just kinda wrote about some of the speculation some of those candidates in both pope and muscleman if you go back two years if they had a change with miller and twenty nineteen you know both of those guys were at mid major jobs. Doing really well. And we're we're gonna go. You knew they were gonna go to their next job and you know Muslim was at nevada and pope was that Utah valley and and both those guys got good jobs. And you're right. They appear pretty locked up right now. Pope just signed a deal through twenty six twenty seven then because as privacy. Don't we don't know the terms but you know those guys are pretty locked in. And i don't think that arizona has a lot more money if any to pay than what they're paying miller which was about two and a half million so you know and if you're gonna you know if you're gonna try and get an established accessible head coach. That's pretty tough to do. You might need three or four at least per year. The way things are going. Yeah well so let's then narrow it down do you believe that Did you write about tommy. Lloyd and start a and simon and simon would both take that job this minute. Yeah yeah yeah. I mean i think right tommy lloyd. The a question mark as to whether he would want it. And i mean there's some questions about whether you'd hire guy without being head coach a program like this but on the other hand you know there's there he's pretty he's pretty well regarded and he's been there for twenty years. And he's you know his recruiting of internationals tough to beat and this and that so it's it may be a question of him whether he'd wanna do that. He's already turned down. A number of turned away from. I should say a number of in a pretty good job from from what From what i've heard and then You're right stoudamire and You know assignment. I think you know. Even just passenger maybe. There's you know some buzz about him. He's a little guy who's you know. Been the head coach now at memphis and georgia tech and he has a great job there. you know and not a lot of press release buddies. He sees standards You know so he might be okay there but the you know who knows. Maybe he'd want to come back here. i don. I don't know about that but stoudamire you're right would be interesting. And you know he. He's probably the one guy who has the best combination of you know sort of history with this program as a player. He was an all american here. They went to the ninety four five four him and then he went on and You know have. The cree had the nba was nba rookie of the year And then and you. Europeans record isn't great but he took that program over. When they were you know having unsuitably sanctions and they you know. They're they have high academic standards. It's hard to get guys in there and they have to play with gonzaga and early. You know you're an and saint. Mary's and byu so at the best you're gonna be fourth in fact. He was coaching the year last year when they were for. So so. if you've kinda put it in perspective of what. He's up against their You know he's done pretty well and he's you know he's well liked here. The personable guy you know he. He's got nba experience. The cell and so you know he. He would seem to have a lot of qualifications as well. Yeah it sounds like everything you're saying it just leads me right to him that he's the guy that's the guy they're gonna hire. You can just feel it. can't you. well it seems like i mean. Certainly if you're going to go the direction of wanting somebody who has some tie your program. I would think so for sure. I mean i've heard a lot of tommy lloyd. The guy but it might be that. I don't again. I don't know if he wants it. And you know there's also we know in these kind of searches. Sometimes they're smokescreens out there. You don't really know who and everybody here thought football. They were gonna hire san jose state coach and and then they ended up hiring. A you know. An assistant from the patriots said martin jet fish so you know that sort of seemed to come out of nowhere so you know i guess you never know there could always be somebody lurking that. We don't know the one thing that i do think is you would think at this point. They're going to decide to make this decision to get rid of shawn miller this late that they must have somebody lined up at least a couple of people that they know will take it so i would imagine it'll be a short search because it may already be done behind the scenes. Let me ask you bruce Do you think that Arizona state and i'm not. I'm not suggesting anything with bobby. Hurley golan dares. On what. I'm asking you is do you think that he's like being well received in tempe or do you think his see this hot. Oh the hurley's You know i y- his. He was he. He's built that program up. I think he has a fair amount of equity this. They had a really disappointing finish this year. And but you know. I think also helps him that. It's sort of an asterisk year with with cova. Everybody knows that so you know there was a weird combination yet. Some really good talent as kind of a weird chemistry mix that just of appear to blow up on them and so and they had. They had a couple of kobe pauses. That didn't help things either. So you know i. I don't think he's on a on a hot seat there but certainly you know You know maybe you know down the road a little bit. If things don't don't turn around. But i think overall he's been pretty well received there. What did you think of Just your reaction to how badly archie failed at indiana. I mean honestly. I went to indiana and i have to say when when they hired him. I thought it was a good higher. Because he had done such a hell of a job at dayton in my opinion at amid right an amid major and he had been a forced there. But i honestly i have to say bruce. I think he may have been the worst basketball coach. I've ever seen at indiana. And i'm fifty six years old and i was i worked for bob knight so trust me when i tell you i've seen them all. He may have been the worst coach. I've ever seen in bloomington yet. You're closer way closer. Situation that i am. I just know. I know archie was here. Actually as san's though shit head coach the first couple years. I got to know him a little bit He seemed at both of them are pretty burs school x. Knows guys you know. Dad was a legend out. There in highschool western pennsylvania The thing about arts that always struck me those. He super super serious almost like all work. No play kinda guy and and..

"The ball there a little careless with their crossovers in front and the Gonzaga players are reaching in, and we've got an official down. On the sideline. Just went down. He is talking, but he is. I think it's part of the attack. And it is Bert Smith. Who is down on his back on the far side by the Gonzaga bench, and they are calling the E M T s out immediately. I was hoping that he tripped over a player and that's not what it was. I think he just collapsed. They are running the stretcher out onto the floor right now in Indianapolis of frightening moment here for Bert Smith, who is on the far side of the floor, Doug Shouse Is on a knee, one of his referee teammates right next to him with a hand on his foot. Medical officials are all around a referee. Now he was talking I saw his Come a conversation occurring With the medical folks. And he was over in the right corner, and he just dropped down. He was standing in the corner and right in front of the Gonzaga bench, fell backwards onto the floor. Bright You can't tell whether it's Brian Michael sooner. Tommy Lloyd, one of the Gonzaga assistant coaches ran right out. On was talking to Burt before anybody else could get there. And an absolute Silence has fallen over Lucas Oil Stadium. While they tend to Bert Smith, one of our three officials will step aside. 11 4 Gonzaga with the lead, You're listening to the men's basketball tournament on the Westwood one N C. A a radio network. "Again, depending on what you're taking over. I think a dark horse could be like a mile Simon. Miles Simonson the system with the Lakers now. Yeah. Yep. So I I think one of those two would would be my kind of Dark Horse would have some sort of internal momentum to get in the mix my swing for the fences. The Warriors are are not looking good. Not looking good is urine pic of the not looking good. I'm going with a guy who believes he needs read. He tweets out Bear Down Steve Kerr. He's gonna have nothing left. They're going to lose every game. They stink. Have you watched them. They stink. They're either Dumber. He could go to TV make a ton of money and then literally get rehired in the NBA in a heartbeat. What's the recruit he wants it doesn't want to recruit a hell of a recruiter. It would be good. Think about it. He would he get that program like elite-level if he had the right staff. All right, again, it's swing-for-the-fences. I'm not hearing you. Marys me and humble and then you drop Steve off her horse. That's not what I was embarrassing. I actually have two good realistic hires that neither one of you have mentioned the two really good ones number one, Mark Pope. That's good would be good. I think you people really good their high-energy. You know the West Coast, he'd be one a or one B for me. Daman would be in the mix too. And then I got another one that Brazil wrote a big story on and you know, you can't you can't hire an assistant coach and I need your head coach. That's bullshit. I'm going to hire Tommy Lloyd who can go overseas and get big-time dudes over and over and over. He is the guy who's helped build Gonzaga goes out and recruits overseas. Look at home almost laughing at me, right? I got him. I can't even believe that you tried to page. This is your knocking this out of the park and then you come with this shit. Yeah. Yeah big time, right? This is terrific outside the box marked Pope is a real good hire. It really is Josh McDermitt the my worry with McDermott as he's done in at the high major level and it didn't it didn't work recruiting at that level against at Arizona. Are you have the rebirth? The Big East is not a high-major conference. Is that what you're saying right here on this podcast? No, I'm saying most of the players. He's gotten have not been Waging War with some of the other Elite programs. That's all I'm saying. He's at Creighton and I think he knows that I think he knows he would never leave great and he's got Bruce Rasmussen one of the best eighties they'd let him do whatever he wants there. Now. He's in the Big East. I just play would be good in the Pac-12 and I felt what it was. Yeah, but I think again, I think Pope would be great because of the way he plays wide open and and to me Tommy Lord would just get dudes. He would get overseas students and not just as Jeff.

"You had come to be with your assistant gone back. I knew guys <hes> for a while. I knew tommy lloyd. I coach his players on a tour and i thought he did a really good job with these guys and we were. We were involved in some of those future head. Coaches events needs to be abusive thing imitation only in indianapolis and him and i got to worry about that so we got to spend time together there. You know we just kind of build relationship. <hes> through through that and i was a kootenai international i was allowed to recruit in europe and we were telling them return trails and have conversations so that's really how i kinda got acquainted with it goes through tommy lewis and then i've met mark view through him a bunch of times. We've had some conversations and <hes> you know in donny daniels decided he was going to breath retire and move off somewhere like they had a spot and you know you're right like i mean i. I had to look for jobs. That was paramount contract. Look for job ought to take a job. <hes> like me. I had income for you know three more years but <hes> you know gonzaga was one of those places that you know especially and to be able to coach under all of fame coach mark few to be able to you know some respect tommy lloyd. You know we bill lane bryant michelson. Who's another sister here man. I mean they do a great job. You know i think they really felt like i fit a need for them. You know with my energy might use you know i associate coach ban like hold it on defense some things i can add because we help out with and then i was cruising. You know those areas that i i i love. It and i thought it was just a good fit. It was a great fit man and obviously with daniel is being such a you know tenured coach and doing a really good job. I have large shoes to fill but he's been great man. You've been bracing and just kind of legal process so it's just a perfect fit for my family and i and you know there's there's no way i would have let this opportunity pass up you mentioned your family of two kids wife and you are your tried and true christian but there's this if you say if if people don't they raj junior basketball coach there's for whatever reason i think a lot of it is how we covered in the media but some of it is just people's perception reception..
