Fresh "Tommy John" from Black and Gold Sunday with Rob Pratte

"A personal note. Phil Evans, first baseman had a collision with Gregory Polanco. He was taken To the Allegheny General Hospital for observation. He was alert and that's a good sign scary collision there and we wish him obviously nothing but the best, and I know he is in capable hands with that sports medicine team from the Allegheny Health Network. But Greg as Faras on the field, I just don't know what to say about the Pirates. They're pitching has just not been good. And you see Kevin Newman, who's been playing great Reynolds has been playing great. I mean, all of these guys up, Moran. Great people that you really didn't expect to get off to such a hot start, especially Kevin Newman. Four for five to R B. I Yesterday, you know, Cem, clutch hitting as well. And the starting pitching. Forget about what the bullpen is done. They just can't get off the schneid. And when you think about the injuries that they have had, you know, Archer, obviously not working out tie on gone for Another year recovering from Tommy John surgery. So that's a big question, mark. You have to really wondering if you're Derek Shelton. I gotta believe a young man who's just competitive as they can be. He's got to be scratching his head his head every night. As has been Carrington, you would have thought they would have been able to get a couple and they just continue to fall on hard times. I think Derek Shelton. You look back and you say, Well, the good news is you've got a major league managing job. Bad news is it's a Pittsburgh pirates. It's just been so hard to get anything going in the right direction for him. They did have that one good comeback victory back against the Milwaukee Beers. The kind of you know, we thought maybe we would write the ship. But then everything just went haywire. Get immediately thereafter. They don't look like a very good baseball team without regard to the collision that happened yesterday. Most things are gonna happen in competitive sports. We see them happened even in you know our softball leagues. I've talked to you about money and things of that nature. But really, it's hard to believe that there wasn't better communication there certain one any fans that were yelling at them yesterday, and you would imagine that Polanco was able to get that ball fairly easily. Hey, should have been able to call Evans off without having any kind of collision. That was a difficult one to understand how a collision would happen like that. You know when you think about it, but I've seen some big Religion collisions in Major League baseball. You don't think of it as a contact sport, but sliding into home plate and these collisions they do happen. And obviously, when you have a live fastball, traveling 100 mile an hour from the pitcher's mound to home plate, it can get a little physical time, Can it not? No, absolutely. I mean, I think we saw last year when I Gonzalez ran into Starling Marta and broke his collar bone. I think that was, you know, a good six week injury and who, by the way, Starling Marquis, I believe is in the top 10 in the National League in meeting right now, I think he's getting around 3 50 which was a human. I'm sure everybody had when when they dealt Starling Marte because We all know that he has the potential to be a very high quality baseball player and center fielder and now, obviously, also a little bit. Yeah, I was an advocate for them to pull the trigger on that deal or someone to get something and really at this point, they've got nothing in return. But listen to spin it, I would say, Well, you know, he's playing in dry heat, So that's why he's doing okay. If he was here, it would be a different story. So You always got to take the high road. I just think the pirates right now have to be looking for some sort of any explanation to try to make sense of it to the fans. But, you know, I still think it will get better because I look at some of these players. But if you could look into the future because this season is going to come to a screeching halt very soon. We're already halfway through August, and they don't look like a playoff team to say the least. Who do you think will be gone next year on the field? Adam Frasier being one You think I think they will be done? I think they're going to love to trade Josh Bell, because I don't think they're going to try to lock him up long term, So I think they're going to cure it. Trade him try to plug Oh, sooner in as their first baseman for for down the road, So I think you and and they also have Will Craig and the mind leaks just improve? I think they have a high level of Regard for you probably are going to see Moran go. Not Marines got five homeruns. They still body left in 200. So whether his trade value is really high In this modern day of analytic, his trade value probably is very eye back in our day. We have no no, Everybody doesn't kill honored. Who wants him? But now nobody cares what your body averages period the ball over the fence, So you're probably going to see him go. So you're going to see a hole. You're going to see O'Brien aids at phone. You're going to see either. Oh soon or Craig at second. I don't understand what's going on with this crazy experiment with cold taco, putting the kid in in positions where he looks absolutely foolish in the outfield, the kids, very high quality shortstop on and what they're doing with him in the outfield is just beyond reasonable. Well, the thing that we were always thinking about with him because of his size over six foot He would be one of those very lean and mean. Shortstop's Who could slide with these right left make big plays, even buying second based off the back foot deep, even behind third base if he had to the guy and that kind of athletic ability, but we thought because he would be able to settle in. He might give you some power numbers in a position that you normally don't get it unless you had a rod playing for you in his prime, so it's kind of a shame to see that happening and you go back to Neil Walker when.

Julia Elbaba on keeping her pro dreams alive

"Our special guest is someone who was a legend in College Julia. L. Baba. High Girls! Thanks for having me. A brief rundown of Julian tennis career, she was number one in college as a junior Uva four time all American set a record at UvA singles with one hundred and thirty three wins, and then took her skills. Bro tour which is has been ranked as high as number three seventy two, so we want to talk about your career. Your Life, your tennis, story and kind of what's next for you because you're in New York I guess I. Where have you been for this whole pandemic? Have you been in New York or if you've been? So my father is a frontline health care worker in New York so I decided instead of like kind of staying away from him in the House I thought you know, let me just go to back to my. Stomping grounds at Virginia where things were kind of magical for me there i. just honestly they say best. Four years are in college and I never boating and when I actually went to school. I totally understood why they say that I can't get enough of that place. And I feel like many other tennis players that had attended UBA same way 'cause we were kind of all in quarantine together in Charlottesville from about mid March two up until a couple of weeks ago. We were kind of all. They're not necessarily hanging out, but we were all doing our thing in Charlottesville. Some people were hitting, but Just being there with so nice and The situation is a lot better there than New York is far as corona virus. So with regards to your college experience I. Mean I went to college for two years and I mean. You're clearly very excited talking about your college experience. What would you say like sticks out? What is it that you love so much about it? I just really appreciate a team environment of tennis and kind of playing for team. I actually that's the hardest thing I've been dealing with after call just kind of transitioning back to the individual lifestyle so playing for a team playing for your coaches, the school. The fans something about that was. Just brought me to life every day, and it was, it was beautiful and and also I'm a person that thrives in a situation where I have more than one thing going on multitasking so doing school with tennis I really that busy lifestyle, and that's kind of actually why. I started my own podcast as a way to have something else to juggle with professional tennis right now. It's a tricky time. I feel like especially. You just turned twenty six and you sound like you're still very connected to your college experience, but you did. Take your skills to the pro tour. Can you tell us where you're at in your career with tennis? Yeah so up. Until the beginning of two thousand, nineteen, I was going strong with competing traveling around the world. And then unfortunately, my body is very easily injured. I have a very muscular physique and it's just. Primarily like just genetics people think what are you doing, Jim that your body so muscular and strong like? Oh, you can ask my mom. But honestly I feel like the muscle mass. Mass! makes me more prone to injury and I'm actually now unhealthy but I was dealing with an injury for the past year. A torn UCLA in my right elbow, which is like You probably know what Tommy John. If you have to get surgery, it's Tommy John Surgery. But I didn't need that. Luckily I was actually ready to start competing again once. Quarantine hit sides kind of bad lockwood the timing. What's been one of the things that you've found other than the fact that you have to play for yourself now? I mean being on the tour is not easy. A lot of people just think that Oh. I was a good college player. You know now I'm going to just transition easily into the tour, but what was kind of the most shocking thing for you. Definitely the adjustment to just being on the road by herself. Obviously, if you know you're doing really well, you can bring a whole entourage and it's great. physios of massage therapists families all your support system, but also I Adore on court coaching. I it just really works well for me. And I get really tight and nervous on tennis court so having that coach during matches especially in college, I definitely thrived in that environment. So I'm actually very. Much like into trying to have coaching during matches in protest I think that would just be super cool. Tennis is like the only sport that doesn't have that like why.

"Are you learn to live with those you learn play with those those become you know? Eighty five percent becomes your new hunter percent As baseball player but the groin was a totally different animal. I mean I was. I was noticeably limping as a runner And I was when I played. I was a speed guy like I. I've moved well pretty quick online. Quick on the quick in the field so hampering that like that altered my whole game And the lateral movement the Independent Ball. You're not allowed to get hurt. And that's that's not. I don't think that's the over exaggeration. Like if you're hurt you basically go home. They're not going to be on the payroll. They're not going to keep their rehab. You know. I think I was kept there to Rehab personally because if I would've went home and got a second opinion against surgery they would have to pay for it So not not ever situations like that but if you get hurt you're pretty much that's it like you get your gall Not Saying Never GonNa play just going do everything on your own so plain hurts and playing injured you know is are two different things. I think But that that was talking on both sides of my mouth. But that's that was definitely an injury like I needed. I needed someone to take me off the field in. Say The you know. This is doing more harm than good. And you know when you're a when you're professionally probably need that a little bit more than when you're maybe a younger guy in amateur where parents coaches are looking out for you and your best interest in. It's not a career. It's it's a game still so it's tough. It's tough to play when you've got something that that focused it's it's taking out of your head space you're thinking about constantly like one were on. Movin. It's GonNa totally wiped out whereas these jam thumbs. You know the the you know the bumps and bruises of the baseball season. Everybody goes through that Here all the time. But that's it's it's a lot easier. Pay Play through all of that stuff. Yeah and frank. That's that's one of the things that I'm interested here perspective because again like a lot of players talking about how. It's there for first time for many many ethics that you see and they don't know what's okay to play through and like what they're going to push through which is why it's important for you having a baseball background like you can say. Hey this is probably gonna hurt a little bit. This is okay. This is not So what are some of those nagging injuries? Where you draw the line with guys. How do you help them or guys and girls? Had you help them understand that whole process of what you can play through what you can and all that? So everybody's different of course in a to Bobby's point about playing with jam thumb. I remember I got crossed up with one of our guys and I think it was. I can't remember what the situation was. I remember got crossed up in gem. I am I going to my athletic trainer and I show my thumbs and he goes let me see so I give them both and he goes. You know what your problem is. Was He got some ugly thumbs? Man and asked doesn't really help me out. What can I do to make sure that this thing? Whatever it is just doesn't get worse and that's where we put some of the multiple plaster on my thumb that the white stuff that you see kind of come around and hold so I didn't have to worry too much about it and I use that for the rest of my career and even after I stopped playing collegiately at play in men's leagues and it was. I still use just because you never know when somebody's GonNa miss a three and a look at it. Look to especially men's leagues but the older guys that might not be able to see the best so There was just one thing but for our guys when we have any baseball player that comes in and says hey the inside part the medial aspect of my elbow hurts. That for us is like a patient coming in and saying I have chest pain. That is all right shutdown. We have to get this figured out because if we let you continue to play what could have been a flexible string now. Turns into Tommy John Surgery. And that's where it can be used the term loosely. A little a little reckless you know and we publish research think last year the year before that shows that flexible strains are precursor to Tommy John Surgery so we have to kind of tease out. What's going on to make sure that we're letting these guys even if it's not the UCLA. Oh we still gotTA figure it out. So that doesn't wind up for these kids losing a year. So and I'm sure you guys as again as Bobby said you're eighty five percent is your new one hundred percent if you're able to get out there and compete especially at the professional level independent league level. You have to be able to do it but at some point. Where does the risk outweigh the award? So if you're on a playoff push that's a different story than if this is in training you know. Yeah yeah absolutely. I actually my first time John. I had a flexor strain early in the season. It was never. It wasn't diagnosed but my form was cramping earlier and earlier with each Darla first couple starts was like seventh inning of it. Start to kind of get tight like you're just worked out and forms. Kinda like Bulla blood and after that it was like a little bit down. The road like third inning. And I'm like this isn't good glossies dropping so same thing right there like you said and that is a big warning sign in any era you here even now right like I think with this spring. Training wasn't was Chris Sale. Were like hey he's got a flexor strain like that's not good and that seems like we extremely comedy. I think every single year in the major leagues and correct me. If I'm wrong there seems like there's one of those things where all it's just a flex restrain everyone just calm down and then three weeks later. They're getting Tommy John At. That's the tough part. Two is the the repair process? Semaine at at the higher you go the more resources you have obviously at the high school level. Maybe you're lucky to have an athletic trainer. Data like trainer has to worry about baseball. You have to worry about Varsity Javy if you're lucky to your school's hockey to have a freshman team so they're spread so thin one sport forget softball forget. Lacrosse at the college level. You have this. Spring season is the non championship season. If you go to a school that has football so football takes up even a lot of resources in the spring as well. So you'd think the higher you go and in most cases you have dedicated athletic trainer but at the higher levels of collegiate play. But there's only so much you can do in guys. A athletes have that drive. They WANNA compete. They don't want to sit on the bench. Especially if there are starter they WANNA be able to go out there. Show what they do especially if they're a draftable if they're junior in college and they know they have a shot they're not Gonna. WanNa let even something like a groin injury where that can be extremely debilitating to regardless of what side as you your hips first swinging a bat. If you're if you're an infielder you need. If you're a middle infielder you needed to earn double plied. So there's so much that goes into it that the resources if you have them you gotta use them. Yeah absolutely so. If you're just joining us we're here with Frank. Alexander is now flooded trainer works with the Yankees team doctor in the Rehab. Gm So a lot of awesome experiences. coming from him today If.

How COVID-19 Is Taking Us Back to the Core of Training and Human Movement

"Jeremy. Good to talk to you man. I feel like we talk about youth sports a lot and what would happen. I think about what happened if there was a big just atomic bomb so to speak dropped on the youth sports industry and it had to kind of restart from the ashes and on some level. Maybe were were there at least for the time being. But what do you think about that stuff with how kids are? What's what's what's happening in the level of kids in play right now with all that. Yeah well I think that you're stuck. You're stuck at home. You're stuck in your neighborhood and even are not even allowed you know. The kids are excited to be at a school right. You can't go anywhere you can't go to anyone's house you can't go on you know go play with any kids are not a close anyways so as we were saying before it's like. I think the one of the things that kids are doing a lot of that. I've seen it might have been doing it as ride bikes. You know because you typically away from each other. You're not too close not jumping wrestling like that. So I think that's one those things that You know we've talked about this before two things. The kids used to do that. Don't do anymore and this is one of a ride. Bikes is sort of like brought back from the ashes. Which is which is nice to see any other thing like we've been. We've been playing a lot of wiffle ball stick ball you know any of those games. We took the dog out the other day. I had up by one of my sons aluminum bat and I had aluminum bat. And we're GONNA tennis ball back and forth down the down the street to each other while the dog ran in the middle. You know what I mean. That's typically. He's at baseball practice or or or basketball practice. We even die. I don't know if you see my video but I we moved the We have a trampoline at our house and we moved the basketball hoop over above the trampoline. So that gets throwdown dunks and and play different games inside the inside trampoline which is pretty awesome too. So I know someone's going to get their hands header with gotten these days but still I'm worth I'll take that chance. Yeah they're gonNA be one of those youtube videos were like they're they're gets caught at their hanging upside down when I went out Saturday night my youngest son see seventy was like just hanging on the red after a dunk thinking these lebrons so you know it's keeping them busy and to keep it a move in and that's we need right now for sure. Yeah and it's going back at. Ci taking kids out of organized sports for the time being going back to the the fundamentals of everything the thing they probably should be doing more of right now anyways then I I like CR- with riding bikes to it. Just makes me think about all the all the creativity that comes out when kids ride bikes to you know you're coming. You're find different ways to go off curbs and and you know get around and then there's you know even though it's a bike and that's not necessarily running on the ground there's still. There's so many things that are happening. That are really exciting. Yeah Yeah for sure. There's a lot of like you know those those those little skills that you don't even think about like dynamic balance and and you know being able to like lateral balance. That's one of those ones right like side like you get you get good even like when you try to accelerate your like believing that bike like side to side while you're driving your feet it's route. I always loved how that looks when you see like Bmx guys racing stuff. So in of course the first thing my kids one of my kids did is the ramp who is that. They took their bike out. So everyone's riding down a little hill in China hit the ramp and jumping off the ramp and obviously someone falls right. Got To get up and scrape it off and stuff like that so but it's Yeah I feel like silver lining. I guess some of the things that are happening because of what's happening in the world where we're having to go back to things that that we did when we were kids you know so. It's it's exciting for I. Guess but I'm still not easy like my kids. Still my kids still have chromebooks and then they still WanNa go on there and and spend a Lotta time doing that. Stuff for playing. Ps four and all that but but You know that's one of those things where we have to deal with that to work around it yet. Yeah no I hear you. It's definitely a little bit of a balanced specially this age. But I I'd seen someone else posts out on social media. They said both for the first time in forever whatnot. I've seen Esau kids playing like in the neighborhood or something like that and I mean people like even just so many people who walk through my neighborhood as well you know what I mean just that I don't normally see just out for walks and trying to get outside Nocco stir-crazy inside their house so there was like two ladies walking around on Friday night at. They both had glasses of wine. Just walk into the streets hysterical hub. Jerry you had posted something about and I'm not too familiar with Something I I. I'm assuming someone had a more formal like he's pushups or like. Get your sweat on for kids. Type training thing you posted and versus as we've been talking about just kids playing and doing doing stuff right and so tell me a little bit about that in verse so that have been tallied versus some of the year. What your kids are doing. I think you ought to fund story to about your son had to run up the stairs and touch the various like furniture in a room and come back or so. Tell me about a little contrast between that type of mentality and then what you're doing so I think that it's not. I'm not trying to blame anyone but I think like you know. Probably some parents are adults. Think like Oh you know I do. This type of this type of exercise is good for me. It's probably good for kids and while moving is great for kids the only mean they don't respond or really care or have like the maturity to understand what exercise really is you know what I mean. They only movement they know games. They know things that engages them. It makes them happy. You know what I mean so I think that I think that trying to force them to do. Exercise is because you do it in or I should say an adult. Does it You Know I. It's obviously yeah. Movement is great but there's better ways in it's better ways to engage kids in there's better ways to get them to love movement that rather than get him to force them to do exercise in. It's like everybody way program. It's gotta be like just like you got to the ideas like to be out of breast while if you want kids to be out of breath outside play game of tag or play a game of hide seek or you know. Play a game of like a chase. Where like you have to run down. Play pickle those games kids have fun. There's objective they can they? There's A. There's a goal you know you've got to be safe for. You're going to be out you know there's things like that that they totally grasp and understand And so that's why I think those type of activities are so much better than just can't get the try to exercise you know. Obviously there's a point where a kid probably can exercise like I have a son that is He'll be thirteen in in a month right and he the day he was. He didn't WanNa go outside. Blais you know play with younger kids so I was like. Why don't you go downstairs in? You know go get a workout in. So he went out and did like you know thirty seconds so lunches medicine lamps and you know he did some he doesn't care about swings and things like that so he's sort of getting making that transition whereas like my younger my youngest son you know. He'll he'll plan a trampoline. He'll run around. He'll ask me to make him an obstacle course. Who WANNA wrestle? Daughter judge gymnastics so I brought home some gymnastics mats and she does cartwheels and flips and things like that. You know what I mean. So I think that's where you got to try to find movements and exercise and activities. That kids enjoy. That will lead them to do more than you know. Up Thirty minutes sweat of a body

Major League Baseball, players union reach tentative agreement to salvage 2020 season

"Yes a baseball on a stand still like the rest of the leagues Major League Baseball Players Association have a deal a path forward if you will is baseball tries to figure out when it will return from a stoppage because of this corona virus a pandemic mark to Cher was on get up on how MLB should resume I think we have to be very careful how much we mess with a game that is built for a reason I mean nine inning games are very important to our roster construction and frankly team that spent a lot of money and spent a lot of time building a great bullpen which is what a lot of teams like the Yankees are doing nowadays that's a huge disadvantage to teams with good bullpens but I want to talk more about trying to squeeze as many games as you can into a shortened season is all about the money for the players and and Major League Baseball and I get it I understand that you want as much revenue as possible we have to be careful how much stress you're putting our players and how much you're actually changing the game well let's talk about the stress should be putting on players I assume primarily we're talking about pitchers and pitchers arms we see them somewhat dropping like flies anyway just in the normal course of order here is is that what your primary concern would be exactly that is remember guys started their offseason throwing schedule you some some guys start before Christmas but they've been throwing all ready for for five months you're going to continue to stretch the season out longer there's no doubt it's going longer we can debate how long it should go but you're going to have these guys especially starting pitchers get started stop start stop they don't know exactly how long they're gonna have to be throwing and then you're gonna throw guys notable times a week potentially bullpen guys gonna be over used so we have so many Tommy John surgeries and and shoulder surgeries in baseball we'll have more if we mess with the

Tantalus son Willoughby let's relax a little bit on. Exa cannot be excited about the sun. Powerful sixty or fifty in the morning says eighty. It is being out there seventy seven. We'll be okay. Fine fucking wake up seeing you tanning by the pool. I'm going to be upset. I'll wake jody warms up you go. We'll be in both breakfast but anyway we're going down Sunday night Free breakfast to do. That's Nice you looked at operating now thirsty. Tj either sent us the the hotel thing and it said Free Breakfast Donna continental or hot. I don't love continent live Segi eggs. Your book titles continental is like fuck in a connection as often zero. Fuck that you know. We need bacon eggs. I used to go into like hotels and like not staying there and deceit breakfast. It just says breakfast never done though. How do you get away with that? Don't ask for your room or anything. You have ones Alaskan. You walked in a hotel. Like when you've checked in arrays walked in. If you would like you belong in a hotel you could just walk in to walk into down. Eat SOME BREAKFAST THAT WHY. Why would they think you don't lose weight? Live there because when they give you the bill to ask for your room number now. They don't didn't hotel continental other hot. Hot Hot you could just give them your like. You could just put down a fake room criticism for best full nineteen okay okay recited for a group trip a little trip okay. So we're getting a call. Now we'RE NOT GONNA call. Who GETTING A car. I'll I had the call last time. You did have a car running. Yeah actually Kinda did this. Trip minus only one day slept in a slice slept in the parking lot. 'cause by because I went home with Some light yeah two years ago and then you guys were just sleeping. I slept in the parking lot. That sounds yeah. No not great for night. Have pictures of me sleeping in the show picks exactly? I believe proof of high because you would have believed it. God Damn it. Yeah so that's a fun time so if you're out there we'll be there. We get Sunday night. Run there than we leave Wednesday evening so fun three days three and a half days. Whatever it is so very excited What else we got here. Oh the Astros Spring Training and there is get hit by pitches every day. I think we're up to six and three games. Which is hilarious l? To is getting the ship would have a signing on Asher. Kids people were asking me to show his tattoo. And we're only a few days in this thing and it's getting it's getting worse and worse Even guys who weren't on the team or getting hit by big I hit by a curve ball and the foot. Now let me ask you think it was unintentional curb on the foot. No no but if you want to hit someone get the satisfaction of it without it seeming intentional to win. You WanNA use a throats. Hard to aim to aim occur pitcher major league pitch. No I meant to goes for I. I think I did it though. The most important thing we need is the first pitch of the regular season to be getting hit spring training because a lot of people like fighting Charles or sentence spring training because it yeah but like But also a lot of young pitchers right now if you're a veteran. Yeah if you're locked in is the URANIA yesterday for the Marlins he just he's just straighten the shoulder. Yeah but first pits of the season is just a fucking beam ball right in the back would be angels. I think and they're not happy like their divisions went. Did I start with sadness? It's Haiti the saddest thing. He actually has spoken out and I wasn't there something where like remember when he threw a slow breaking ball to honor. Tyler skaggs a whistle and there was A. Oh that's Oh my God but the SAS and we just did there was like. Who's the ACE for the angels? They it's not a tiny that's sad for them because they are hanes less than one on their depth chart that's call assessing also maybe Jarvis back that literally. He's the first thing they don't think angels. I think jarred me. This has a career ever fallen off a cliff. More Jerry Weaver. He was like their number one. Pitching the All Star game and then all of a sudden it just. He was a seventy area pitcher so best. It's interesting to retire. He consistently into threes and all of a sudden four six five six seven four. Just I know I absolutely nowhere does fall off as a pitcher quick but you are eighteen and nine two seven and twelve twelve and twelve thousand five remember how Bad Jeff. Weaver was on the Piss me off more than when he picked you such a loser. Such a tough. We're nothing with him. Soften the Astros. David Ortiz spoke out with the Astros. Also they need to stop like you need to lean into it and stop taking people's actual sides just don't take them the one with the at they say. Oh sorry yeah took signs now. Just don't you're making more of attention on you doing that? Why would they need to just lean in to be the villains of this has kind of taken that in stride? But I don't know just as fans to just accept it like no one's GonNa fucking one guy. That jarred tweeted the video of him being wearing a dodger sacrifice people so he's he's an astros. No video starts out. He's astros fan wearing a dodgers hat. They're playing the Tigers. So what where Tigers had or. Don't wear a hat all. We're like a normal half hour daughters. He's mad at the Astros so scared because he's like people are GonNa yell heard about the backlash. I didn't WanNa wear an astros hat here. Oh what a pussy spring training. It's Hot Sun beating down your. I get the hat but Dudley Square. A dodger telling makes no sense there. And then all of a sudden as the video progresses he's a Boston accent starts coming out and by the end these like also the astros physical. Oh right behind the red sox who he just didn't talk the whole time he's just a red sox. Red sox astros dodger's Fan. Yeah one of the worst people to ever systems planet horrible combination. Any looks sunny grass so confusing. Couple years of world series. Who TO ROOT FOR GUYS. He critically just doesn't like the Yes. I guess David Ortiz came out real quick and he defendant Jose Altuve as saying he's getting too much of the blame and that the Astros are getting too much he shocking. The David Ortiz will come out and defend cheaters like that and he's still trying to get to the. He said he gets to the bottom of his steroid when he got accused steroids. And he just never did and it blew over. So I guess you know shocking at David. Teasing and take the extra side there he's I can't I forgot he got shot. Oh Shit until Beth feels so long ago. That was just this last summer right. No Yeah so. Is this summer there. Yeah Yeah Yeah. Wow it feels like what was it like a cheat. His wife for the guy was drug lords. Like right. Maybe don't do that makes sense. It'd be don't do down in down there. I don't care how you're treating a cheat on a drug lords wife you can't expect to be off Scot free. That's going to say that things work a little differently down there. And then they in the United States of America What else here. Real quick the Ping Pong Tournament and Kyle holder one. Mike Ford actually went the elite eight kind of good for him. I think I'd win this tournament called Kyle or one. Which Boone predicted by Boone predicted? A cobbler would win. Maybe or am I wrong. Turn me just pick the really hope he also directly the Super Bowl right predict like? Hey Hey starting to worry me that. He hasn't predicted yeah. Exactly we have to get that down. We have to get it out like maybe he knows it's GonNa be like dodgers and he doesn't WanNa say I feel of feeling too much. That would suck. You would not win that torn by the way. Why not there were some good rallies? I saw but I don't know I could have jake marshes so good a pink ball and I mean I collapsed yet but I could beat. You haven't yet. It's like two to nothing. Yep I'll be to tiller from us We I. It's he yells in the game like he's like do after a game me. No sorry I get into a game. Oh my discussing passion own. You're like like like Serena only like one that we made. It seem like I get excited when I went to a big problem. I don't love it better than would be a problem. I I can see jake marsh grunting. "Oh yeah nothing happened but your armor. So that's fine like there's nothing wrong with your arm like I'm telling you armor so we had Cressey. We probably have done the contract like back then. We saw someone like the the twentieth. Nineteen final parting gift from that. Training Staff is just room. Luis Severino true. I know I know what he's going through. Though I I don't think I actually could throw fastball because my shoulders completely dislocated or have a torn rotator the shoulders at our last punk punk show on the last beat I hit the I hit the crash cymbal on the last song in something just pop and my arm almost went through the the drummer who was just a it was a hanging weight. Also having when you thought you guys Zach parise recently and then you did a mess. I what he's going through don't you I do. I know I could tell well. Maybe that's part of the two. I took his his guys to the CEOS of the same problems. Now that would be. That actually could be happening dude that my arm hasn't been the same. How about that my room since movies a movie? I don't know if that's a movie doesn't sucky script. Their lives just go downhill. I guess that's Kinda the chain like they it at first and they realize this is obscure movie. This is exactly what it is. This a movie called dragonheart where a guy and a dragon. Nobody's WASCO fuck. I forgot who Mel Gibson. Maybe I don't know But there were a Nazi. No not but they're him in a dragon base. Whatever happens to drag. It happens to the guy and Sean Connery. Dennis Quaid okay. Not Mel Gibson But yeah so that might be happening with dragonheart. That's all I'm the. I'm the only person just movie seventeen budget. It's like a million nine hundred ninety. Six billion years old actually made one hundred fifteen million in box. It was great. It's a Great Lakes dragonheart. Dragonheart awesome move. I'll promise you this I'll never watch it. Yeah bad bad. Title I vow all right all right get Outta here murderer. Yep Okay. What else do we got here? Let's do good news now. Garrett Cole pitched in spring training he was awesome. He'll really good but they didn't televise it. How do you not televise? Garrett Cole Start You watch your copay. But I don't know how they're probably predetermined what games always the nets replay. GotTa show the nets because they're horrible. It makes regular outraged. I WanNa Watch either watch periscope. Thank God there was a guy I wanted to watch it too but I don't think it's crazy that it wasn't the mets regular season game like in the second half a season where she didn't know that at the time there's like spring training this it wasn't like Oh Gerke we didn't have Garrett Cole yet then that's the minded by nine. If anything the Yankee should have made him start on it like it's predetermined. What Games will be made him start until Isaiah but then also it's like well we don't fuck me. The gherkins should do good swing train. I just Nolan throws ninety eight in their first sitting spring training towards ninety eight layers. Like that he's very locked up that I needed that for myself this week to see that stuff so garrick looks good and the things that throw another inning on Saturday Socio that goes Judge Good Injury News there. That seems like they actually handle it. The right way ahead of it early he's throwing From one hundred twenty feet and he's doing Some soft toss hitting He's GonNa probably play. They said sometime after the march second off day. Hey we're going to the game. March third will be cool. Sierra judge how we should help your next episode. We'll be live from well not live but will be in Tampa. We recorded Probably yeah definitely Yeah we'll not be live But Yeah so. We'll be probably at we'll be at that. March third game for sure will probably be at the March fourth game beforehand. I don't think we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA stay flight to catch. You'll probably be hanging around there before. But if you want to say hi. I know some some people have. Dm This march third will be the day to check us out there. But and hopefully judge blinks. That'd be kind of cool We talk about Jay Half Mongolian. Har Explain the outfield today. I don't know how it's GonNa go. I hope it goes. Everything's so far. The signs been good but who knows whenever Giancarlo out there for the first time. That's shoot if it goes really. What because then Giancarlo can yes. And then that saves his body and then we put it in her out there who knows it'd be because I feel like it's not going to well. I think he's got a better your pessimistic. He's got a better shot of sticking it first than in left field. I mean the guy can't even field grounders anger bell can go deal with like the sun and shit and like track and fly ball. Alert is way harder than left that interests for out. Who WHO's talking to US yesterday? But it's so it's it's feasible for an infield go the NFL outfielder. The infield actually happened member number. Tommy Lee. Yeah I played so I did play. I went from I two left and it was very easy for me. I'm Wayne Natural more natural than any hard but an android should definitely be play left Centerfield. No that's a commode left field. He should be able to be okay today in the corners are Clint An- An- Har- could be. Wow my bet. The over then like Schwaiger stinks in the outfield gray for they like us. All these fat Rhianna hers ethnic like he would. Yeah he looks ripped. Yeah like just be. Okay don't go. They want with Johnny Damon Allen left to like reverie fly ball to him was an adventure. Remember indoors a fucking sick arm so he doesn't even have to be such a good outfit is like just catch it and then just use that. Did you see that clip of Tibo tracking? It was a blast home over like a farm and he sprinted to the Wallace. If you're GONNA catch it also I don't know I'm addicted to T. Buildi- I can't believe he's still playing bass. Hitting home runs a major but for him like I'm he just was baseball yeah. Xfl asked him the place. No I'm gonNA chase. My baseball drew love that. And he's like I wish she would've fucking went and play next. What does he like to play the whole Marley season last year but then like Jay like the lowest Saturday anyone you heard what I thought? He was hurt for like part of a season right but like he like he played like spring training. Fuck it no he. He's a war stats of anybody and still does like spin on Saturdays for Potter and the Summit. Yeah myrlie season is usually the did both may overlap for like a week or two but it's fucking hit the stats like say across the board of swing as the worst year now. Some opponents stats is actually. I'll hit one sixty three last year. Yep It was like he was in triple A. The entire year delay the first season Aa the second season AAA the third season. They're just using him to sell tickets and every minor league stadiums all right in two thousand eighteen. That's what I was thinking. He was good in double at two seventy three six homers thirty six or four-game about two hundred seventy three thirty six oh BP but then last year seventy seventy two hundred thirty nine at bats. He won sixty three with two. I think he was three hundred and fourteen. Which is the amount of people like that? Were IN IT. Like he was right. Through and fourteenth in every statistical category triple is usually easier than doubling some cases. Yeah they said like there's not big. There's not a big difference. It's not a jump. So yeah who knows they have to be sliding him money from the ticket sales or something. That's the only thing that would make sense. He's worried about money. I can go speak at a college. You a million dollars. We know what they're doing. We know why him around but I mean if he made two major league stubby must walk up since number. Does it do you just do it every year right? They're almost kind of out because they're GONNA be competitive this year. I'm as long as they stay kind of healthy fifty years blessed two years when you do. I think if the mets didn't have that hot streak in like August last year where everyone believed they were GonNa Win. The East all they would have done at the end of the must watch no matter what your I'm tuning into that T. shirt you remember when he was first taking. Oh you weren't here you're yet. It was at the old office. But when he would come up for his first Spring Training Hacks or yes retraining. We would all gather on the TVs to watch him spring training at bats. And that's how that's how Google TV all in time we've done that is for. Chris. Davis hit fun. I hope he does it again. Or He'll be just retired over fifty two whatever came out of his desk and he doesn't get up for anything he was like. I need to wash five. Was Awesome unbelievable Cruise like one weird thing with war like the stat. Like I was going to. Chris Davis last year. His war was only minus one. There's no way he only cost the orioles. It's gotta be like minus twelve or something like there has to be like war and then like common sense on this. What was your card sets? Were Bite as well. But it's just like one guy deciding like well now. Chris Davis Xeros about eleven game number. He gets out of it though and he hit two home runs against the Red Sox All right before we go on the Take a quick break for the rest of the show. We'll talk to you about liquid. Iv Irish is sick. I feel great now. I'm like completely back. There's nothing there's actually no better feeling than when you're completely you complete defeated a sickness. You feel accomplished did that. And I actually when I was feeling pretty Shitty I was popping if you look what IV's Into some water and. I honestly helped me big time. Not only is taking this after. I'm like getting hung over. I mean the last week or so. My shoulders been barking a little bit so I haven't been able to do back shoulders. Joe Girardi she's also a little bit but no. I'm definitely in good shape okay. I want my fucking shirt We get the really bad news. It's the worst news I mean. We had such a good offseason. Everything was going perfect and then Luis Severino torch. You see all of the year and probably half of next year not all next to knowing how the Yankees deal with things. He's Tommy. John Surgery as bad as such a gut. Punch it's really sad. I'm just sad like I was so I think it was actually a month ago on the show whereas I just can't wait to watch Luis. Severino pitch get him and Aaron judge. We didn't have been a year and a half since we've really seen him like in tiptop shape and performance. Fuck Frankie slapped on the ASS. He's been you know I. I just miss seeing pitch. Say Okay. We're going to have him back him and cold the top or taste. It's just just sad. It's like as a fan. It sucks more from like that perspective. I mean the Yankees obviously hurts. But like you can't spend it as aren't they? Want one hundred three last year without him and they're adding Garrett Cole C. You could spin it where it's major hip you could spend it where it's ruining the air. Just sucks is a fan of you. Don't get to watch him pitch for another year and a half. It's no you I I said I originally wants. The news dropped. I was like Oh my God because I have these beat writers on twitter of so I see immediately. And no one else in the office. Like jared and even see and. I was like I literally couldn't breathe. I was like come on like Tommy. John like we all feared it. Obviously form soreness tightness parlayed with loose buys and your although is like literally an equation for Tommy John. But I didn't want to believe it and went to New York. They did a battery of tests and the craziest thing is like they've been doing. Memorize all off season. That's what I don't get. How do you not know earlier? So I looked it and they've explained because a lot of people have said that Is that like most ninety three percent of the time when they do these normalize they find everything and like there's a seven percent chance that they need to do a die contrast Marai where they inject dye into. You and people. Don't WanNa do that because it's like you know you're putting dying you know it's a whole process so they finally did that. Mri just too weird. I know I know why. Of course. Seven percent to two from the GECKO though right. Yeah so they. They were doing these. Emory is fine. Great have a great often location. I'm married did all these things. He was complaining about it in game. Three right and then they clear up to pitch game seven so he was going to Pitch Game. Seven with basically a partially torn. Ucla it's probably snapped mid mid outing. And I wish they would've just done this contrast like to start. It's BA BA him. Paxton it's basically like the season ends and the Yankees don't monitor the health at all. Once they get the spring training. It's like all right. We're actually heard do it in October. And then give yourself an extra four or five months recovery. Yes so the official doctor were says cut. Bra Brennan Cutty Star Talk to Dr Leith Jussara from nyu said regularized. These days have like a ninety two ninety three percent accuracy die contrast at nine nine percent and they have all the action. Which Inflames the Joint? So I guess he wanted to avoid that And that's why they they're not usually the GO-TO MRI because it's obviously can cause other things. But yeah they eventually did that whole fuck your UCLA's toward the selling it sucks. Obviously it's annoying because we do have Garrett Cole now so I'm not worried you imagine they didn't have coal we really fucked and as it magic. Paks Tanaka Domingo's could have an the number two or shop. Yeah Yeah it just. It sucks because we do have call. I wanted to see Severino be like our three. Which would be fucking off like the pressure off of him. He could just go out there. You just just pitch days. We have three aces of those four of Coal Coal Severino polls talking and it's the best but now by next year nice you know. Probably not probably not hope. He doesn't die. Oldies a like a thing. Where doesn't come out? I hope I am dying from shale would be would be troublesome that would be. Yeah but like I said so when I saw the reaction obviously horrible that took a step back and I was like this. I just feel so bad for Severino. I'm I think this team is totally fine still like I don't think I I don't think much changes he didn't. He didn't pitch all last year. They want one hundred three games adding enough Garrett Cole and had all these injuries Aaron judge out the whole year now you have Garrett Cole and hurts though it only hurts definitely hurts but I mean they're not gonNA miss the Playoffs. They're good still win the world series like. I'm still very confident. They're going to win the world series and be the best team in the American League and play the dodgers and it'll be an absolute war obviously would help to have severino for your number two but thing about this. Paxton's already throwing next. I think they said next week and start throwing everything looks good on the bright side. There he comes back. Let's say June Great Domingo's back. What June as well right June issue. And then you cook from there and you have hopefully one of these young guys Clark Schmidt. Mike Big Moment for them right now in spring training by the way Jordan Montgomery pretty much locked in his the four where he was coming into spring originally battling for the five. Maybe he's the four now like really solidify. He's not he's not Competing it's anybody. And then there's my King Clark Schmidt even Debbie Garcia and who knows? I keep throwing around lasagna. Sonya in the bullpen from in the bowl. Don't do this openness that we have people who can start right and they're saying. Oh maybe stretch Chad Green out. I saw that one. I want starting pitchers just have starting right. We have some of these. Young guys are going to be good. Talented J. Hop. I'm glad they kept him. I think he's GonNa Imagine saying that. Tober I know but I think he's going to have a big year. I really do well. He finished the year really well. He was under sub three areas. Let's got the best thing. So he has like motivation I'd Map Blake Right. Adam Apple I in the spring start. I think Jay half will have a very big year for the Yankees. When need kind of to William have a very good number three pitcher to pitch got? Imagine if he's just as good as he was in two thousand eighteen down the stretch he was fucking. Louis are entered the playoffs undefeated almost and then the red sox shelled him but will they probably knew what was coming every pitch but Yet big moment for HAP and he looked. Hey start off in spring his first start. Look unbelievable I two innings absolutely dominate. So hopefully he's on the right track there. It really sucks several. I say good for him that like I don't care how. How do you ain't spend their money because you know they? They went and got air. I'm not worried about saving a dollar here there. Good that Severino got four years forty million dollars when he did he. He sounded extension of bio two few years team. Just so you can get money. Imagine he didn't he just hitting free agency like this like I would be horrible. So at least he's going to be able to come back. It sucks though if you think about it when he comes back probably it'd be summer of next year and then when you have Tommy. John Usually takes about five to six months to get back in the swing of things and so realistically to chat you might. I don't think he should do it to go out to hurt you post so that school thought for sure. I don't think anyone saw that. We get down to spring training. We talked to a few people. But you know what morning recommends telling everybody. I recommend he's still like us. Go out there POW but I just lost my train with that of Oh he realistically assuming he does get the top job that we won't see dominant seventh on the map. Because the last time I saw dominance everyone was first half which would ally of twenty eighteen the last time till Frankie touched him and I have the stats out if bring up a second but it will be three four hundred twenty two. It'll be three years since we've seen dominance every mouth. That just sucks for him like Prime Years Pressure doing as a pitch out he. I mean he asked also like he's GonNa come back still what he'll be twenty seven. He'll be twenty seven so that's slightly twenty eight if if basically next year's loss right but like you know that's still pretty young. Losing Twenty Six to twenty eight is horrible us or Piss off to well if the thing he comes back probably July June July and he's on an innings and he's limited and pitching and also like you. Don't just come back from Tommy John Day. One and be like. Oh I'm Severino again one like like. I think down the stretch next year by September. Maybe honestly maybe we're thinking so far ahead but he'll come back as a reliever like he did not that he'd be permanently. That's the way the ease him in is relieving. He was so good as really when he when he tried out. So who knows but it just sucks for him more than I'm worried about the teams. Don't go to panic mode. Listen if Garrett Cole goes down problem big problem like that's pant and sound the fucking line. I think what's really start to cry. I know I know we don't need that out there. He really could. Yeah read off the SA- Frankie Borelli the backstory here. We I calm in but honestly I don't want to look him in the face and he tells them see with..

"Out At first and I turn and I threw it to first base ace and I didn't have a good grip on the ball and I threw it about ten. Feet wide of mattingly first base jared does not make that kind of mistake well. That's my second mistake. The ball had caromed off the ball boys sitting along the right field line. Now gantner was on his way to third with Jeffrey Leonard. Not far behind then it's rolling down the right field line and Dave winfield never back supply up but he backs this player. He picks the ball up and he throws it home. The right fielders throw appeared to be on target to the waiting glove of the Yankees. Thank you catcher and I hear somebody say cut to cut to means you. Cut The ball off and relate to the catcher. I cut the ball off. I turned and I threw the ball to the Catcher who was about twenty feet away and I used it right by his head. Gantner scored the ball skidded out of play as Leonard approached third the play by play guys tried valiantly to keep up with the chaos out of our way both times then then there and they'll go on and he will let say they're gonNA wind him score the APP the umpire awarded Leonard Home. The square was now four to two. Tommy thought Oh no that was my third air in just twelve seconds. It went by so quickly that it was hard hard to keep track. Tommy John gets to Arizona but I thought three errors and you know it was a physical meltdown. Tommy got out of the fourth inning with no further damage other than to his pride he returned to the dugout where he gathered his teammates and and told them guys look. I've got three more errors than me. Let's get our butts out there and let start hitting the ball so my next three years won't make a tie game out of it and everybody's just gonNa find like this. They're just laughing their butts off the inspiring pep talk worked the Yankees rallied for twelve more runs. Tommy went eight innings and gave up. Just one more run for the sixteen to three three win. After the game. Tommy looked for Yankees manager. Lou Pinella he found him in the clubhouse talking to writers about all those fourth inning bungles and I said Liu and he looked he said yeah. What do you want. I said if you knew how to motivate these guys like I do. We wouldn't be as far out of the first places places. We are and everybody's laughing. I thought that was funny. Tommy went nine and eight that year and the Yankees missed the playoffs but he says his debacle on July twenty seven th one thousand nine hundred ninety eight provided solid material for the off season. It gave me a lot of stuff during the winter when I go out and do speaking engagements and stuff. It gave me fodder so people would laugh it happens. That's part of the game. That's why we play the game and that's why People Watch the game and that's why they pay to go in and it's why they can do you Tommy. John Retired the following year during his long career. He committed a very stingy forty nine errors. That's an average of just under two the per season. Maybe that's why he seemed a little surprised when I asked him if he talked with me about his Major League record I pitch twenty-six years. I went two two hundred and eighty eight games and I have a surgery named after me and people want to talk about three Arizona play. Sorry Tommy. Let's charge the reporter with an error on that one and let it be recorded here that you are a good sport and fielded all questions very cleanly That's only a gain scary Wallich. "To use sports i think the biggest thing is connecting with your kids again and seeing what they want because they'll know the way we've got a nudge every now and then like a growing number of voices in sports medicine community tommy three is dead set against the cultural specialization in which athletes focused on one sport that they play year round it's really competing in that sport for more than eight months year some people are like well if i just play a bunch of sports i'll be fixed that's one of the things that's part of it that's the first step to it but then there's also that we're you know my kid just doesn't like any other sports okay then if it's baseball you're playing in the spring and summer on one team and then when that's over you have a game plan and the game plan is not play more baseball because truly let's face it the time that we're spending in sports in our grand scheme of life is so short but the decisions were making in those in those few years is affecting the long haul in the meantime tommy john is cautioning against the over prescription of the surgery that bears his father's name his father was thirty one when he had his surgery now close to sixty percent of all tommy john surgeries or happening to fifteen to nineteen year old arms he says so it's happening in population that it wasn't supposed to occur in and that's what my dad is is sick about is it's prolonging a professional big leaguers career for him to provide for his family and seek out a dream but now it's bled down to where it's occurring more in demographic that should never be talking about having the surgery tommy three calls the amount of tommy john surgery and epidemic i wish i could say tom john surgery was isolated it's looked at to be so common and not a threat it's not looked at as unfortunate it's almost it's almost sickeningly thought of as a performance enhancement where some are looking at it as will you come back throwing harder let's get it preemptively that literally is what's going on tommy three knows that tommy john surgery saved his father's career revolutionize baseball to have it they're sitting in on the side waiting for that essential time when it's necessary would have great thing to have what a great event history of baseball tommy john figured it out he just preferred to see it use less often injuries sometimes are unavoidable but epidemics those are completely preventable tommy john the thirds new book minimize injury.

"This is only a game i'm jason gay in forbi littlefield baseball fans of a certain age may remember tommy john as a major league pitcher who played significant chunks of his career with the los angeles dodgers and the new york yankees and one two hundred eighty eight career games but today everybody knows the name tommy john for a different reason he couldn't be prouder that his name's attached to a surger that prolonged professionals career look what he went through and what he did back then to figure out the model to be able to pitch fourteen years after and never misses start because of his elbow and fourteen years he figured that out that's tommy john the third talking about the revolutionary medical procedure his father tommy john junior underwent more than forty years ago that surgery saved his dad's career but tommy three is worried it's become a crisis in use sports tommy john surgery is when the owner collateral ligaments that whole the inside of the elbow together when it tears or ruptures and what they do is they replace that broken or torn ligament with a tendon usually the tendon comes from the opposite forearm or they take a piece of your hamstring or they might dive into a cadaver and then what they do is they drill holes into the bone and they loop it and figure eight it back and forth and graft that tendon which then acts as a ligaments tommy john wasn't just the first pitcher to have this done he was the first person period that's how you get a surgery named after yourself the first surgery was september of seventy four and doctored frank job was the first one to do it on them tommy three was born after his father went under the knife but he knows the story very well this is something dr jill had done on polio patients ankles that's how he got the idea and so my dad being dad comes in okay you know my ligaments gone will what am i auction and frank job dr job is just like look i'm gonna perform something but it's so that you can continue to be a man in a father and a husband and sell cars after this not the chances you've pitching are slim and my dad goes but there is there's a chance i mean it's literally the dumb and dumber so you're saying there's a chance i think dr jobs have one in one hundred that he'd pitch again and my dad goes fine let's do it tommy three does remember the steps has took to strengthen his arm he recalls his father driving the family car with a softball wedge between his fingertips trying to improve his grip if you guys remember the rice bucket it's an old martial arts trick to strengthen dexterity and strength your fingers he would drive his hand into a bucket of rice meanwhile tommy three was trying to become a ballplayer himself i was playing little league baseball i had to be third grade and i was pitching and my sister was four years ahead of me so that she was in seventh grade the fence was lying with her friends all around the back post and they came to watch tommy john son and i remember sweating it out profusely because i could barely keep my stirrups in my cleats i wasn't developed i just i wasn't good at all and i was the son of one of the better pitchers of all time tommy three was far from prodigy my first exposure varsity pitching as a freshman i struck out sixteen times in a row and.
