Mets Sign Trevor May to Bolster Bullpen

"Good morning boomer. Our you know what. I'm great j. You know why because of uncle stevie and i hate that i hate it. I need to it's worse than danny dimes. It's it's so stupid it's not even funny. But steve cohen finally open the checkbook and brought an extremely solid relief pitcher. And i think this is good. This is good things are coming. People are paying attention now. And i think sandy alderson got this one right. This is gonna be a guy that's gonna be back into the bullpen guys. Go throw it about ninety six miles. An hour he's got a full array of pitches. He was a starter at one time. He had the tommy john surgery in two thousand and seventeen. He was a good pitcher further twins. And i think it's a really really good solid two year fifteen million dollar signing is exactly the type of thing that this team needs. It's not just about the big splashes you got to have other guys that are going to make a difference to now. They gotta tender. Most likely stephen matt's maybe gazelle man and you know who knows if they're done tweaking with the You know the bullpen or not. But it's a good solid signing so it's a good sign for all of us has met fans but it's only the appetizer. The appetizers the basket of bread brian. This isn't even the appetizer right. We're getting there boys and girls. So i'm pretty happy about this. When i saw this yesterday i saw. I was watching on twitter. Areas like trevor bauer. I've told trevor. Bauer you know may. Just turn out to be the year of the trevor's if trevor bauer does sign with the mets and you know and trevor lawrence ends up with the jets.

LEADING OFF: 9 of 16 playoff spots open going into last week

"Need do. Steve Baker is Goa eight. No. When every game at home this weekend and you're sitting there at the Bay Area Chevy dealer Sports desk would say they're in the playoffs. I boiling to bet on it. Yeah, You know, you never know what could happen. The Giants probably have the best schedule of any of the teams they're battling with to get into the postseason. The Giants after that 14 to 2 win an Oakland yesterday, their first win in six games against the A's fact they have been outscored 42 to 16 in the first five. They play a four game series here against Colorado and that a four game series there against San Diego. Cueto against Marquez. Tonight. The Giants are tied with Cincinnati in Milwaukee. Right now they're all of the 500 mark. There are half a game back of Philadelphia in the wildcard race. Two teams make it The others Don't Although six teams are in fact separated by just a game and a half, fighting for four spots, including ST Louis and Miami, it will be fascinating. To see how it turns out the Rockies air virtually out of the playoff funds, and now it looks like they won't have Nolan are Renato for the entire last week of the season, he has been battling a left shoulder injury. And then the Padres second best record in the league, already clinched a playoff spot. Overwhelmingly, it looks like it will be the number four seed, so they BB. Maybe resting some of their regulars in those final few games. Philadelphia finishes with seven on the road have Washington The Tampa Bay Milwaukee has ate on the road and Cincinnati in ST Louis, Cincinnati, three home against Milwaukee, three on the road against Minnesota. Me time. The A's the magic number to clinch the American League West remains at one. They're off today. They play the Dodgers tomorrow night, but they can clinch it if Houston loses in Seattle tonight. The Astros got some very bad news in a season full of bad news in terms of injuries. Justin Verlander, announcing this morning he will undergo Tommy John surgery, felt some pain in his elbow, throwing off the mound in a scrimmage a few days ago. Had it checked out and the consensus was Tommy John surgery. He was hoping to get in one start this week and then be ready for the Astros in the postseason. That's not going to happen at the

Julia Elbaba on keeping her pro dreams alive

"Our special guest is someone who was a legend in College Julia. L. Baba. High Girls! Thanks for having me. A brief rundown of Julian tennis career, she was number one in college as a junior Uva four time all American set a record at UvA singles with one hundred and thirty three wins, and then took her skills. Bro tour which is has been ranked as high as number three seventy two, so we want to talk about your career. Your Life, your tennis, story and kind of what's next for you because you're in New York I guess I. Where have you been for this whole pandemic? Have you been in New York or if you've been? So my father is a frontline health care worker in New York so I decided instead of like kind of staying away from him in the House I thought you know, let me just go to back to my. Stomping grounds at Virginia where things were kind of magical for me there i. just honestly they say best. Four years are in college and I never boating and when I actually went to school. I totally understood why they say that I can't get enough of that place. And I feel like many other tennis players that had attended UBA same way 'cause we were kind of all in quarantine together in Charlottesville from about mid March two up until a couple of weeks ago. We were kind of all. They're not necessarily hanging out, but we were all doing our thing in Charlottesville. Some people were hitting, but Just being there with so nice and The situation is a lot better there than New York is far as corona virus. So with regards to your college experience I. Mean I went to college for two years and I mean. You're clearly very excited talking about your college experience. What would you say like sticks out? What is it that you love so much about it? I just really appreciate a team environment of tennis and kind of playing for team. I actually that's the hardest thing I've been dealing with after call just kind of transitioning back to the individual lifestyle so playing for a team playing for your coaches, the school. The fans something about that was. Just brought me to life every day, and it was, it was beautiful and and also I'm a person that thrives in a situation where I have more than one thing going on multitasking so doing school with tennis I really that busy lifestyle, and that's kind of actually why. I started my own podcast as a way to have something else to juggle with professional tennis right now. It's a tricky time. I feel like especially. You just turned twenty six and you sound like you're still very connected to your college experience, but you did. Take your skills to the pro tour. Can you tell us where you're at in your career with tennis? Yeah so up. Until the beginning of two thousand, nineteen, I was going strong with competing traveling around the world. And then unfortunately, my body is very easily injured. I have a very muscular physique and it's just. Primarily like just genetics people think what are you doing, Jim that your body so muscular and strong like? Oh, you can ask my mom. But honestly I feel like the muscle mass. Mass! makes me more prone to injury and I'm actually now unhealthy but I was dealing with an injury for the past year. A torn UCLA in my right elbow, which is like You probably know what Tommy John. If you have to get surgery, it's Tommy John Surgery. But I didn't need that. Luckily I was actually ready to start competing again once. Quarantine hit sides kind of bad lockwood the timing. What's been one of the things that you've found other than the fact that you have to play for yourself now? I mean being on the tour is not easy. A lot of people just think that Oh. I was a good college player. You know now I'm going to just transition easily into the tour, but what was kind of the most shocking thing for you. Definitely the adjustment to just being on the road by herself. Obviously, if you know you're doing really well, you can bring a whole entourage and it's great. physios of massage therapists families all your support system, but also I Adore on court coaching. I it just really works well for me. And I get really tight and nervous on tennis court so having that coach during matches especially in college, I definitely thrived in that environment. So I'm actually very. Much like into trying to have coaching during matches in protest I think that would just be super cool. Tennis is like the only sport that doesn't have that like why.

Major League Baseball, players union reach tentative agreement to salvage 2020 season

"Yes a baseball on a stand still like the rest of the leagues Major League Baseball Players Association have a deal a path forward if you will is baseball tries to figure out when it will return from a stoppage because of this corona virus a pandemic mark to Cher was on get up on how MLB should resume I think we have to be very careful how much we mess with a game that is built for a reason I mean nine inning games are very important to our roster construction and frankly team that spent a lot of money and spent a lot of time building a great bullpen which is what a lot of teams like the Yankees are doing nowadays that's a huge disadvantage to teams with good bullpens but I want to talk more about trying to squeeze as many games as you can into a shortened season is all about the money for the players and and Major League Baseball and I get it I understand that you want as much revenue as possible we have to be careful how much stress you're putting our players and how much you're actually changing the game well let's talk about the stress should be putting on players I assume primarily we're talking about pitchers and pitchers arms we see them somewhat dropping like flies anyway just in the normal course of order here is is that what your primary concern would be exactly that is remember guys started their offseason throwing schedule you some some guys start before Christmas but they've been throwing all ready for for five months you're going to continue to stretch the season out longer there's no doubt it's going longer we can debate how long it should go but you're going to have these guys especially starting pitchers get started stop start stop they don't know exactly how long they're gonna have to be throwing and then you're gonna throw guys notable times a week potentially bullpen guys gonna be over used so we have so many Tommy John surgeries and and shoulder surgeries in baseball we'll have more if we mess with the

But as early as Tuesday that's tomorrow, folks, we could see Shohei Ohtani back in the angels uniform and back in the lineup for the angels. That's right. "Coveted prospect in the dodgers system and Honeywell still on the best prospects in baseball to this day. I think what they come back. I mean, it's they're gonna. To be a very much sought after for this rotation. And then if that's the case yet, some quality quality guys than you might only need one bullpen day a week. So to say so kinda talk about Honeywell little bit. We're gonna go over Honeywell McKay. And then we're going to talk about the seven eight nine guys. But kinda give me the gist on tell everybody what those guys are going to be in when they're new they're going to be up for Br Honeywell, you know, he he could have been on this team last year, if he didn't tears ACL as soon as pitchers catchers reported, I believe it's coming up either. It was this week or next week where it's year anniversary of it. I mean, it was a media. They reported the next two or three days afterward. He tours, you know, he I believe I said he had Tommy John surgery. So you know, he got hurt. And you know, if he doesn't do that if he stays healthy he's called up at the start of that star last year. He's he was ready to go for that rotation race fans Ray to see him, and it was devastate. Eating. I mean, devastating whenever he got her. I remember exactly where I was. It was it was tough whenever he got hurt. And I think as soon as he's ready to get back as soon as he has a few rehab starts, and he feels good. They're gonna get him to the bigs because as I mentioned numerous times now he was ready last year. So I think we'll see him by Memorial Day if not a little bit after that standpoint, a- delone, he tore his. UCLA whatever you do for Tommy John surgery. He got hurt and had Tommy John surgery about a month after Honeywell dead. So his year Mark will be obviously a few months later, but he was throwing off amount in December. There's video of him being excited throw off that mound again in December. So he'll maybe work in to a few simulated games this spring see where he's at. I think that he'll be shortly after memorial. They may be you know, if everything goes, right, maybe on a moral about I'd say about two or three weeks after that he'll be ready to go into some major league action. And I think if they get these two guys plus Blake's now plus Morton, plus whatever glasnost can bring you have yourself. One of the best rotations in baseball. Yeah. And you do it without like a true aside Snell without like a true number two. You do it with just a bunch of threes. Honestly, if if that's what they turn out to be. But if hate to break into people if you ever rotation with two or three fours in it. You're not gonna win baseball games anymore. You know, if you can have, you know, five three plus guys that's one of the best rotations of Maysville. Yeah. I think Honeywell has the only the only one that has a ceiling of being an ace and a ceiling of being Snell. I think delone seething as a to glass now, probably a three maybe a two, but still if you had all those guys up plus Morton, who's just underrated as we said all show about everyone this team, but whose underrated and very quality veteran kinda kinda tell everybody about lefthanded pitching slash D H extraordinaire that is Brennan McKay. Yeah. Brennan mckay. Yeah. They shut them down from playing in the field. He's an actually D H now. But MacKay just has it. He's a serviceable bat, you know, at the plate. You know, not very good in terms of, you know. Wow, ING you. He's not gonna. Wow, you just going to be an average guy who could be beneficial. If we're playing in the National League, if they don't if they don't adopt the D H before he gets called up, you know, very beneficial..

"When they throw a breaking ball at maximum velocity that their elbow ligament isn't going to snap that whatever dead person. They got the elbow ligament from that it's in their nice and tight and it's not gonna snap like it did before. And I feel like that's what Gordon Hayward is going through at least partially that the injury he sustained the seriousness of it with his legs is sort of an aqu-. Revelant to Tommy John surgery. It's more serious. It was more serious injury. But regaining confidence that when he jumps. He's not gonna land awkwardly and going to have a similar injury that when he maximizes his exertion on his lower half and his lower body that something isn't going to go wrong. And I think that's a big part of why Gordon Hayward struggling, and it's why pitcher struggle when they come back from Tommy John. Yes, it's physical regaining everything getting into game shape. But it's also mental and when you injure your leg like that in basketball, it has to mess with you a little bit. So plenty of drama in the NBA. It was fun. There is more drama coming in the NFL coming up next on the rich Eisen show. "You throwing a buck on him and the end of the election and stashing him for two thousand twenty a boxer. Okay. So I think I would do a buck or two, but I think that even that immune less, you have the limited yell. That's going to be hard in this day and age, and that's it neces- thing. L league. I'm old. Down the one I dropped one. I just didn't see the to L only keeper leagues and one of them was making the shift to on base percentage and saves plus holds them. We're looking at switching qualities from wins. The quality starts and I'm loving that. So I'm like, I'm going. I'm staying with that league. And at NAT one, we do have a limited deal spot. So there's only so much. There's only so much to be done. But the reserve I'm going to say let me have ten a total of ten spots between reserve a deal. So there is some flexibility there. But yeah, I I just I still don't get it. I'm still flabbergasted, he was able to get not much money. That much money hurt coming up when there's no guaranteed with. How guy's gonna come back from Tommy John surgery? I mean, didn't they did they learned their lesson McCoy the whole completely different? I don't even know if the same ownership, but I mean, aren't they down this path of Corey loopy? They were. Maybe they gave them then they give them a whole. They gave him a whole pre agency deal and what he throwing five innings after after that. Yeah. Something like that. I think they're just banking on the upsides gear. Riches can be an ace. If he could just stay on the field. The problem is he's never stayed on the field and as much as I love him and his many times as I predicted him to finish top three or even win the AL Cy Young it just never came to fruition. Because dude dude as one season of one hundred seventy innings or more and it was great at one season. But. I just I can't I can't Bank on it in for fantasy. He shouldn't be on your drought force for twenty nineteen. It's funny. I went to baseball reference and looked Corey lewke and a very first article something from the east village times close Corey Leuke about about about Garrett Richards deal. It's very the very first the very first article here, it is San Diego. Also hasn't had a lot of success with their job John recipients evidenced by Josh Johnson, Corey lewke. Chose Johnson is usually other one Michael Pineda, very smaller pan line. Correct. Didn't Pineda go down about two lives. Yeah. Pineda started pitching. But the reason he didn't the reason he didn't pitch more at the last season because then he tore his meniscus or something, right? Yeah. But what I'm saying is the financials wasn't Pineda like a to ninety that sounds about right? I'll double check for. I'm looking here. That's all. I was looking ten ten. All right. So what what causes the jump five million dollars more. We'll Pineda's Michael Pineda. Sure. You know, my. Ally. It's it's a bear very similar time line. Yeah. I mean one thing we did see was I mean he threw twelve innings before tearing his meniscus. In you know, in the minors before being able to before having back on the deal. So I mean is long as he is progressing. Well, I mean, maybe we can get a handful of innings from Richards this year. I still think like you said, I still think it's a poor investment by San Diego. And I think it's a. A poor investment fancy. I think the one thing this tells me is that the Padres are looking at two thousand twenty as the year that is going to be there to make a push. So if you have prospects in the dynasty league or keeper league that are Padres that are, you know, in, you know, high A or or or higher in the system there's a chance that they're going to be on the field in two thousand twenty and we could also see them make some real pushes in the free agency market at that point is well, I think this that this if anything points to that being the time line for. For the Padres to wanting to compete. So let's move on. Let's talk about a Alex. He gets traded to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Omar Narvaez who gets sent back to Seattle to fill..

What do you think about that move? If they're looking for new players, I guess they're just wanna keep something the same like, they're really. They don't wanna spend too much on. And he's one twenty nine and one hundred five and two seasons. I think they're just going to say we're gonna give you a we're going to buy you a team that can win if you don't win. Now, you're fired. That's my guess is. My prediction. Yeah. Dodgers president Andrew Friedman. He talked a little bit about Machado Machado. You should say. And he said that, you know, there was no secret that Machado didn't always hustle. He talked about stuff like that. He said that he knew kind of the risks and the personality that he was getting. But the positives outweigh the negatives. Do you really show in the postseason? Did it? I think it'll be telling how hard they try to retain him. Because if they try really hardly postseason. Yeah. He was. Okay. But not what they wanted if they needed. But the different was something more in the heating. He would he can do. He can do so much more. It's proven they can do so much more. But he just didn't show it and he was don't cheap shots at the players on the team. I think it'll be interesting to see how hard the dodgers go after retaining Machado because if they go really hard, then maybe there's some truth there. But let's be honest if they don't really go after Machado after giving up so much in a trade for him. It my they might be thinking what maybe other GM's are thinking. He's just not worth it. He's just not worth the headache. But it will be interesting to to watch. How about? Some injury news Lance mccullers picture of the Houston Astros. He's going to miss the two thousand nineteen baseball season as he undergoes Tommy John surgery. Do you think that's a big blow for the Astras? Yeah. I think Lewis losing anyone that stature is gonna hurt. And like, I don't know if you would call this like the end of the run. Or maybe. Yeah. I young core of two and. A bunch of other players that they have Correa. So. But the Astros they could be without mccullers and karakul if they don't retain kaikal, and he leaves they might need to mix it up a little bit with the pitching staff, although. The extras do how some arms in the in the minors some guys that are looking to break through. I think what we've seen over the last year from the Astra's. How incredible they've built their team with young talent. So I would not be shocked if we see one or two guys into the rotation next year for the first time for the Astros and really see them be dominant and see and people will probably say well the Astros. They lose a couple of pitchers, but look get these young guys that they brought in. So that's how I see. The Astros have been super smart and their decision making personnel decisions over the last few years. I think we can agree to that has I don't know if there's been a better team in terms of that in terms of building a team. Oh, absolutely. Like, they they really committed to that really on another planet. Yeah. They're the most patient team. They hit home runs with Korea bregman. Those guys are are big time. So and no one would have thought that what three years ago other than that? I think that's all the news for this week major league baseball as we are in the off season anything else you'd like to add Jif. No, I do it. Okay. Well, it sign off. "We're trying to get a feel for how people spend their day. So if you would would you walk us through a typical day for you. It's Mike shope. Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late to that. I just sorta space out for about an hour. Space out. I just stare at my desk. But it looks like a market. I'd say any given week. I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real actual work and the bulldog. It's not that. I'm lazy. It's that I just don't care WGN sports radio five. Fifty welcome back fun little exchange just ago that I have a follow up to joke. You know what Joe is into tyrod Taylor? And I know what you're thinking right now listening you guys stop. But Joe is into Taylor. And there was a thing today were taken. There was a report Mary Kay cabin. Had a report that Taylor wants to start somewhere else. He's frustrated. He's frustrated. He's healthy. He got hurt lost the job. But it's healthy. And yet wants to play. Yeah. So it's a little bit. Like some that we talked about yesterday. But you know, how I put you through the ringer with will it happen. No. Why not because they would look ridiculous, right? Is that a good reason for not doing something? No. There's a little bit more. I have a little bit more to say about that. Okay. I always take some calls. Derek anderson. We'll start Josh Allen is hurt is out for who knows. I mean at least a week. I'm probably at least a month. But no idea that the bills got what sounds like they got what they wanted from the second opinion that they they still think he will not need surgery, right? Which should mean, he's not lost next year. Right. If you needed surgery he might be lost next. That would be the Tommy John surgery made famous by baseball pitchers and that is a long road back. Tommy, John, his son goes around speaking and writing about how kids should not get Tommy John surgery preemptively any talks to parents about teaching ways to avoid injuries. That's like Tommy John's time giants Twitter tweet after tweet about this website and his sons efforts, and like that's just everything he tweets about is that Didi gregorius Tommy John surgery today and Tommy John is there with a tweet about hate to see this. Here's a website for you. If you're out there and thought about Tommy John surgery, which I'm Tommy John. Tommy, John makes me think of I mean, obviously the surgery, it's it's you know, it's. It's famous. I don't know. I might be the only person that thinks of a bobblehead. Because when I worked with Kevin Sylvester he had come from Charlotte and the baseball team there the minor league team there. Tommy John was involved with them the Charlet checkers. Maybe. No, that's hockey team, Charlotte nights. Anyway. Yeah. Maybe that's it. That has been a baseball team. Don't know if it was them then but they had a Tommy John bobble head night. I don't know that it was a bobble elbow, but the elbow on the bobblehead had a scar. On it. Yeah. Put a scar on the elbow for the Tommy John bobble head, it's authentic. Right. All right. Here's John with a solo John. Hi, guys. How you doing today? Great. Thanks for calling. No problem. I'm gonna question a couple of questions, actually. I don't know much about Derek Anderson making very little at all until you guys treated for him. When I say you guys. I mean, the bills signed him. They signed him it in trade for. Never started. Or? Yes. Here. You started started a lot of games. Yeah. Check it out Google it. He's he's been in the league since two thousand six. Yeah. It sounds like I thought he was just maybe a couple of years like AJ McCarron than sitting on the bench type. Nope. No. He's been around a long time. Yup. Okay. What's developed it toward the no real tire fire this quarterbacking situation. It's a mess. They really they really made. They made a mess of the situation. Yes. No, there's no question about that. Thank you, John. Here's Terrence next low. Terrence. Hey, do you guys think we signed air garrison? They can try to get more wins than our current situation. Or do you think they signed him? So that they could get away from roasted Adebayo because there's no way they could start Peterman. But I think that they realize that that's the way forward is kidding? Obviously pick up the trash. To win four games. Or are they trying to I think they're definitely trying to win games? I think they give no thought to. Tanking. I think that that's right. That's pretty solid in my mind. Did they sign him to? Appease the media. I certainly wouldn't want to say yes to that. But why they did it? And when and how is interesting to explore because it's not like they decided after Baltimore that they could not live with Nathan Peterman here anymore. Okay. Maybe Derek Anderson wasn't ready, and he was their top choice. But if you were about divesting of Nathan Peterman, then you sign someone else just end that you do that. And they did not do that. So they must think highly of Anderson. There are probably there's probably a back story is to when it happened. You know? Of course, it happened before Allen was hurt. So it wasn't like Alan got hurt. And they did it. Right. I mean, it was really just in time. So what else? It's pretty fortunate for for as much of a message. They've made of the situation. The one thing that they are are fortunate to have done is that they got. They got Anderson holler Vert lined up. Whatever whatever needed to happen happened that they were eager or he was agreeable or both. And I it just he got here if they hadn't done that. And they were just rolling with Allen and Peterman and Sunday happens. I mean, you are just you are all-time scrambling. It's a mess. Maybe then you're trading. I don't know. Maybe you're trading something to Oakland for AJ McCarron because he knows your system. Now, you all right. Thank you for bringing this up. Now, you you asked me about that idea. The next call your the next guy up. Hey, mike. I got an idea. The need. Someone who's familiar with the offense? Why don't they just trade the fifth round pick back to Oakland for AJ McCarron? Say something like, do you think they they could do that? You think they could do that? Should they do that? All right. What did you say to the other guy? They could do that. They won't do that. Why won't they because they would look ridiculous? Is that a good reason? No, that's not a good reason. It's not a good reason not to do it. But why do we pretend that we're not in the real world in the real world circumstances change all the time. You didn't have Josh Allens injury. You didn't have you have more information about him and about Peterman, so you could do that. But they would be roundly criticized for doing that because they wouldn't even be able to they wouldn't even get full price. Right. They would get who knows if you would even be possible from the other end, but you do something like that. You don't get full price. You would have to get like a sixth round pick or something like that. And then like that would be a defining transaction for the general manager this happens with every general manager and. Every team and they never do. There's a lot of moves. They would never make because they would just look ridiculous making them even though they might be good mood, which again blasts a canon ball through best interest of our team. I mean, you just never wanted respect best interest of our team. There are thousands of things. These teams could do that would be in their best interest that they would never do Colin Kaepernick is ten times better than any quarterback. They have they would never sign him because they don't have the courage to do that. Like, they're all kinds of things teams could do that would be best for their team that they never do. You know, I realized today, I'm I'm I'm sort of glad you mentioned Colin Kaepernick here, not sort of. I actually end like because I had I had the thought I even sat on a tweet for a little while this morning, and then just decided not to bother, but like for all the preaching about culture that they do that that that I respect more than some. Couldn't you make the argument that camper Nick would be brilliant for that. Like, I know there's a distraction factor that you know, I think dies down. You know, maybe maybe in proportion to how he plays, and if he plays, well and helps you then the distraction, maybe just goes away completely. But wouldn't you think that a player who has sacrificed his career basically is blackballed by the league being? And he's still competent was was you know, better than replacement level good when he stopped being allowed to play in the league coming to your team. Like, wouldn't that be good for your culture? Wouldn't it be good for your team the players on the team go? Thank you. Thank you for signing this guy. This guy is a good football player, and he can help us and certainly not everyone on the team. And maybe this is where it gets tricky would agree with what he's done in what he has stood for guys would. But plenty of them would isn't that good for culture is not gonna help your process. If your the team that is going to say look at this guy can help us, and we respect the price. He's paid to make the point he's made. And we think it's high time someone give them a chance to play football. Like, I think that's on. Hundred percent. So he's suing the league, right? Hundred percent. So I I like that that angle I was just thinking like for for all those don't want guys who have suspensions and injuries. He doesn't have suspensions or injury. Now. He just took you took a political stance. Mostly when people have brought him up. We just sort of squash it with no team is going to do it, especially this one. And I thought a little bit more about that today. And I'm not sure that that really blinds up with culture and all the stuff that they want to stand for in fact, maybe the opposite is true. So anyway, there's that. Training McCarron is less ridiculous than trade for Taylor though. Okay. Right. Sure. Like he like Taylor was here and took you to the playoffs and like you benched him for Peterman back last November. There's just more. There's more by the side of the road with him like McCarron was just well the other guy won the competition. So we traded him for an asset. Now, we're gonna go get him back because we're stuck it's less glaring. I you still get I rolls laughs. But tyrod would be like, oh my gosh. What would never stop? No, right. It will never happen right now. Either either neither one is ever gonna happen. But I think McCarron is proportionately like just less ridiculous. As an idea. Maybe one has to be less ridiculous than the other. So I would agree with you, George is with us, George. Hello. How are you? Great. Great. I wanted to ask you a question me, and my son were wondering what would they do? Anderson got hurt. Okay. And would they put in back in sure another question is? I mean, if we continue to go in the direction, we're going. Is he going to be on the hockey? Or is he already? Thanks, guys. I don't know. I mean, what is the hot seat hot seat is what when the owners are ready to fire him mean? I don't know. I have no re-. I have no evidence that that is in their plans at all. So I mean, I don't I guess I don't do hotseat. I'm interested in whether he should be the coach of the team. I'm interested in whether you know, giving giving my opinion and talking to you about your opinions about whether we think this will succeed, and I have real doubts about that. But I mean, I I have no idea if they have thought about that at all I think they saw in him. A chance to sit back and gain some some credibility in some professionalism. And he's young and he he someone that they could believe in. And I soon still do probably who knows and just sort of. You know, settle in because they bought the team the coach quit after that season. They hired Rex Ryan. And then fired him less than two years later. Like, you know, this is not the way this is supposed to work. So I think they see him or saw him as that. And if that's right and meaningful in any analysis. You know, he would get more time than you might expect. Or whatever is average for a coach. But I think that's right. But I think it also doesn't take long to just completely turn on a guy. Gaily is the most recent example of that. And you know, he doesn't represent all the things that McDermott does line wise and the owners even the same obviously like Ralph still on the team when Gailey was here. But like, I don't know when that turned on him. It was like we were two thirds of the way it felt like through a season. And I would I think said like he's fine. He's fine. And then it just there was a Seattle game in Seattle. Seattle game in Toronto. Thank you. Sorry. And just Ooh, I think this might be starting to happen. And then it was done. A month, and he was done. And I would've told you a month before that he's good. So you know, what what you need me to draw you up a doomsday scenario here. Peterman has to play again, for whatever reason. The something happens Anderson, and it costs them this game. And then there's nobody else to play besides Peterman. And it goes it goes like it's gone when peterman's had to play. I think the owners could really love Sean McDermott and go. Yeah, we we wanted to not be embarrassed anymore. And this isn't like what are we doing?.

"Figured the giants were going to be the main topic tonight during the day, I said because I watched him in good Lord today stink. But hold off an and you you heard are highlighted Papa and Schumer and saying what they had to say. But then I see the scroll going across the the TV about Didi. When you see it and part of it goes by Sergio. Anyway, what was that? And you gotta sit there, and what did I miss if you're ready to go to your phone, go by Tommy John surgery? When it is happening. And you heard Cashman Boone talking about what is happening. The herbs of lifting something. I'm leaving leaving the stadium. Getting ready to go home. No in the game. They sitting is the Red Sox. Ball of of defense of the wall. And then made it throw and he felt cash balance. A couple of throws the first he thought something was wrong. Let's say Tommy John surgery, take then Tommy John surgery used to be just it takes a year. Now, the narrative changed well takes a year if you're a pitcher, but not if you know this player. And eighty point to gleyber Torres. But you know, he had Tommy John surgery on his non throwing here. TJ Rivera had Tommy John surgery and never made it back last year. So to say he's gonna play the bulk of the season, you know, I don't have a problem with Taurus playing short. They bring McNeill walk to be the full time second baseman. I mean there there's there's those options. And then of course, there's the Manny Machado option. I think so Sherman of the post was saying you should sign up for five years for. Two hundred million make him a forty million dollar player. You're not going to ten years. Nobody's gonna do that stuff anymore. But I just I just said if for some reason the Yankees did go after Machado. So that means catcher I. Short. Third, right. Left. If you bring back mccutchen there. All right handed hitters. Doesn't seem like they're going to be no depending on Greg bird at all. They're all right in hitters. Didn't. They just say before he got hurt the name left left-handed, bats. And if you're gonna believe he's coming back back in may or June. Good luck. I'm you know, me. He'll be one hundred percent a year from now. Now, they're saying, well, you know, I watch it s and why and he was saying something along the lines of he's not a pitcher. So he's not gonna have to make that many throws. Well, you still got to go through the rehab process. That's gonna take a while. And now, you know, you you wonder when when the arm is repaired he'll be able to make those throws from the corner. But sees. Well, at least, you know, they're under the the salary, gresh, hold at that him to. It's going to be reset. Spend some money if he wants to but it's. He's a good player. We all know that. Fits in with everybody. But it's Tommy John surgery. If it was Tommy John surgery on his left arm, and and he said he was coming by spring. I'd be like, okay. But it's Tommy John surgery on his right arm for short, stop it as a gun for an arm. It's gonna be he makes the throw from deep in the hole, and it just doesn't get there as fast anymore. What did he Yankee sign with? Oh and put him at third and trade Torres and hope to I mean, and then what? Now, it's. It's too bad. It's too bad. I mean, really. Say that he's gonna come back and play the bulk of the season. I'm like that's just being that sounds like talk. No big deal. All of a sudden Tommy John is no big deal. Okay. I hope I hope he comes back stronger than ever. I really do. But it just you know, I'm. Bringing it back a bit. You know, we'll we'll come. He comes back when he comes back. If have surgery this week. Then you can kind of put some kind of artificial clock up. Then there's the giants. I remember the caller who famously said that they would go thirteen and three this year. He might have the thirteen right? Just in the wrong column. They're not gonna make a change of quarterback. Not now. They don't have anybody else. And I'm not even get into capper, Nick or a backup. Let letter. No, no, no. He's the quarterback for a while. If he stinks next week. He's still the quarterback. Avi stinks. The week after that is still the quarterback. Giants going to rule the day that they didn't take a quarterback and to say, well, we'll get a good quarterback next year. Yeah. Okay. If you say, so. But. They're going to say to this last year was year two quarterback though. So many take it they could have done they could've they could've done. Who? Anybody but bra, but then then Baker Mayfield. And what do they have? Now, they have a stud running back. You know, you look at at. Barclay. Unless he gets hurt this this he could be Roger Craig type back where he averages a thousand yards rushing thousand yards receiving he's that good. He's that good. And he got a wide receiver who's all pro. But he's a he's a diva beyond diva. Traded. But now you your. Arguing with a fan ninety flush fresh flesh and blood fan. No, you're arguing with a metal fan. Gus for rod residents headbutted the wall hurt his neck and this guy's head butting a fan. It's just stop already. You gotta you gotta thing for inanimate objects. Does he gonna marry kicking net? Now, he's having a relationship with the fan. What's next? It'd be engaged to the Gatorade cooler. So you gotta top running back and a top wide receiver and a quarterback who if this was nineteen fifty five you'd probably be the MVP, but he's immobile quarterback in a mobile era. Everyone wants to do to read option. Giants can't. They're gonna have a problem. They're gonna have the potential of a great offense. And why is it that the giants and the Mets remind me of the same organization that the the giants have a problem with the offense of line. The Mets have a problem with the bullpen. It's been an ongoing issue, and it never gets old. They try, but he never get it done. One in five. Is it scary to think could they have back to back thirteen loss seasons? Oh, man. Couple of boxing, those who there is actually a very good fight on tomorrow. And I'll give them profit on ESPN not ESPN plus regularly ESPN ten thirty WBO welterweight championship. Terrorists Crawford thirty three and thirty four Twitter. I'm sorry. Twenty four knockouts and Jose Benveniste has junior twenty seven and eighteen kale both guys undefeated. And I don't know if you saw the way in those two knows and you. Just talking trash. Beneath is put his hands on Crawford pushed him away and Crawford. Threw a right cross. It just missed. I don't know if that's good or bad because if he had hit him, there's no fight tonight. But that's a good fight now from the bizarre. Talk a friend of mine in boxing, couldn't Manny Pacquiao signed a to fight deal with Al Hayman over Showtime. Bob with him. He's done. He's gonna fight agent. Bronner? I guess he's the Kanye west of boxes. So that'll be kinda that'll be that press conference will be bizarre. And if he bsb Browner get ready for this, folks. Pack. I'll Mayweather too. Not with my money. You guys wanna do that? He wasn't welcome. Not interested. Disappointed in the first one, and I didn't pay. I just was covered. It. They got four point six million bucks. You know what he'll do? You know, what it'll make money. People will watch. And then people be disappointed. Watch bahama. Joe Frazier have their have their fourth fight when they're both like sixty. How about Marvin Hagler fight one more time at some point is over. But if you wanna pay that kind of money that's up to you. So we got a bunch of stuff to get on by the way, the NBA season starts on with officially starts on Tuesday. But for the locals nets active trade on Wednesday Atlanta at the Knicks on Wednesday Brooklyn beat the nets a few hours ago. Brooklyn finished the preseason to and to fifty percent from the field against the Knicks. Knicks finished the season three three and to forty five percent. Mr. Knox was like one for six or something like that. But it's preseason. My son loves the NBA all these people are getting excited the preseason the PC's preseason, you know, me I wanna see twenty games. I gotta see twenty games is easy to say. Oh, they're going to be a playoff team are going to be thirty games. Let me let me give you a twenty games. Every year we go over this. Let me see what you look like after twenty games. If you ten and ten maybe you'll be you'll be. Year five hundred eighty seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six when we come back. We got a lot of baseball and football to get to right after this. Yeah. We sorta stopped paying attention and racked up a lot of day. Yeah. It was stressful. He blamed me for my credit card debt, and I blamed him for building that man cave. It's awesome. Anyway, we stop blaming each.

"tommy john surgery" Discussed on Effectively Wild: A FanGraphs Baseball Podcast

"So there's been a lot of handwriting about Tommy John surgery in the past few days just because kopech and Otani kind of coincide. Ended here and I asked John when we had him on last week, what the larger trend is, because it can be easy to lose sight of that when you are morning though temporary loss of one particular pitcher, and he said, and JJ fee has an article up at fan graphs. Now showing the actual data that if anything were passed peak, Tommy John, or we're not currently at peak, Tommy John just eyeballing the graph that Jay has in his post here. It looks like we've had the fewest Tommy John surgeries this year, at least so far that we've had in any year since two thousand eleven. It looks like both for all professionals and for MLB pitchers only and you know, pretty close to some previous years, but it's definitely not worse than the last few years than it appears to be slightly better. And as Jay said, it's cold comfort because we're still going to lose kopech and seems like Otani even though he is not for. Really made that decision yet. But I think as bad as the problem is and as seemingly unsolvable as it is at least so far, it's not getting worse which I guess his kind of victory even though pitchers are throwing harder and harder all the time. It's kind of like the the degree to which we moan about Tommy John surgery depends on who has recently had Tommy John surgery like a few years ago when there was just a a stack of young impressive pitchers who were having Tommy John surgery all at once than it looked terrible in this is destroying baseball, and it actually was worse at that time than it is now and now kopech it's an attorney seemingly we'll have to get it. And so we're all kind of, you know, back to talking about Tommy John surgery where it seemed like we just hadn't really been talking about it much for the previous year, so it's still bad. It's not worse than it was, but it was really. Bad before. So it's as Jay said, cold comfort, right? It's hard to imagine that this trend is going to get better anytime soon, like meaningfully better, just as teams prioritise velocity and throwing all the time at cetera. And I think you're you're absolutely right that this is one of those areas where when you have anecdotal evidence, if one high profile, a really exciting pitcher needs Tommy John surgery, then it just becomes the conversation because there's always enough Tommy John surgery going around that there's more than one case you can point to, and you can just say, like, has as Japan tweeted out last week after the kopech news. This is the worst thing about baseball is the UCLA that there is. There are plenty of things like baseball's a slow sport in September roster expansion is ridiculous. But when you have really, really promising young pitchers getting hurt and having this happening going away for fifteen eighteen months. That sucks because baseball, his better for having the really exciting young players able to perform good pitching. I know I'm a self-described pitching dork, but good. Pitching is really fun. I find it more appealing than good hitting your or good defense. I think it's so much fun to watch pitchers, throw things that move in. They move really fast and they move in these incredible directions with chart. Reagan when that's taken away and then you replace Otani with someone on the angels tips charter, you replace kopech with someone on the White Sox steps start. It gets worse. Post players aren't as good. I don't mean to denigrate the players down to the death strip, but let's face. It is fun to watch worse for the sport. It's hardly like we, we can talk about how there's not a demonstrated correlation between philosophy and Tommy John surgery. I don't have all the evidence in front of me. I know that there's evidence pointing about the Russians, but I, I think that if you look at a case like kopech could, let's I think we can just say it's not a surprise when you throw so hard like there is a limit to how much your body can tolerate..

"Com. Showy Otani has spoken in regards to the Tommy John surgery. He said he has yet to decide whether he's going to have the surgery or not. Here's what's going to happen. He's gonna play out the season. Right. He might as well plant the last three and a half weeks. Then he's going to have the surgery. What's interesting though? Is this Otani is saying that he's going to be able to come back next season. And even D H, even though he's not gonna be able to throw until twenty twenty. He said through the interpreter. Quote, nothing set right now, there's a few options out there. I'm still trying to look into every option. I will end up making the decision hopefully sometime toward the end of the season. Swinging doesn't affect my elbow in any way. I feel like I'm progressing as a hitter right now. I'm getting as many experiences as I can while the games count. Here's what's very interesting when it comes to this again, he doesn't have to make a decision in the next week or two he can make the decision right at the end of the season. Isn't this showing you that show? A Otani is the most valuable player in baseball. That'll be like the MVP. But I mean, like the most valuable player in baseball in the sense that even if he has to have Tommy John surgery. He's capable of playing in contributing to a team for an entire season. I mean, you think about this. This is going to be the fun thing about as much as it stinks. That show is it going to take the mound in in in twenty one thousand nine hundred and might not until halfway through twenty twenty. We might actually see Shohei Ohtani gets six hundred at bats. Next year is a D H. And we can buy we might be able to see a guy hit two eighty with thirty five homers in one hundred RBI is recuperating from Tommy John surgery. Think about how that sounds. You're talking about a guy who's going to put up potentially big numbers as a hitter. While recuperating from Tommy John surgery to then take the mound when he's back healthy. We've never been able to say that because it's never happened before. That's what's crazy about it. The guy by the way blasted another homerun. Today's now hit nineteen home runs in eighty three games. Got about forty seven Rb is he's got a nine sixty s hint close to two ninety at this point. Fifty RBI's navy three games with nineteen home runs playing at the big. By the way, is is home ballpark. His value is unreal. First of all he gets paid nothing because he's on the rookie deal, but his values on real. Because if he was just a normal pitcher for the next year and a half, you can't do anything for you. You don't you? Don't get him to play at all. So this whole Babe Ruth from Japan. It's kinda legit. Because while the guy's not going to be able to take the Mounties he's gonna be d- aging. So if he gets the surgery first week of October right Tober, November November December December to January January to February February to March by the time March first rolls around that's five months since the surgery season starts at the end of March, right? That'd be six months. Maybe misses a couple of games at the beginning of the year. But Shohei Otani could potentially D H one hundred and fifty games next year. Recuperating from Tommy John surgery and be useful. Because he's hitting is not a fluke. He's got legitimate power. The guy's got unbelievable power. There's no question about it. I mean, this is the guy to come from Japan that has actually lived up fully tall expectations. Now, each euro did much to a point wasn't as big a home run hitter. Or even close to what he was in Japan is a very productive American hitter in his prime year. Masahiro Tanaka has been okay. But he was not the guy who went twenty four no his last year in Japan, but Shohei Ohtani actually might be better than what people expected, right? He might be better than what we expected. Let me ask you this. Shown your baseball guy. We talked about Otani when he was coming out. Has he exceeded your expectations with the bat? Yes. Not really three point three one era. Nothing nothing. Great sixty three shots. Fifty one innings. It's not enough. He's a rookie though. So I'm not going to make a judgment based on fifty innings. So yeah, plus ligament apparently. So the fact is here's the thing. There's not enough of a measuring stick to judge the pitch the pitching. But in terms of fit hitting I don't think. I mean, just because three twenty Japan with twenty four home runs in three hundred and fifty at bats means nothing. But what are you what he's done here with the bat. I think has exceeded the expectations because I think we all thought there'd be a natural drop off going from Japanese baseball to American speak. He definitely has power. Definitely like even more. So than Decky Matsui watched up close with the Yankees. Yeah. Yeah. He's bigger than Matsu. I know Matsui was stout. But he's bigger six four lean. He has a great swing. Yeah. Anyway, Otani to me, I think he could definitely hit forty home runs a year. If he gets the plankton his skill set makes him one of the ten best players in baseball. If you really know. Pitching his heart to save reliever. Would that help? No. Because if he was like a closer than. Well, how would that how I don't know? If you've limited his innings, right? As as a reliever would that help him maybe hit like get more bats as a hitter. We'll think about this potentially unless strain on his on his arm when he comes back in twenty twenty as a pitcher. Maybe you haven't bitch out of the bullpen for a year, build up the arm shrink. We forget he just turned twenty four in July. So he comes back at twenty six right? Maybe a twenty seventy put him back in the rotation. Remember John Smoltz went to the bullpen. I just think maybe it makes more sense to do that. Although you know, what it's a different. It's a different setup. It really is to get ready to be a reliever compared to starter in part of his value. Is the fact that he is a starting pitcher that's capable of healthy to give you know to to potentially be your ace. He's the best pitcher on the angels. If you think about pure ability, right? Gary Richards has good stuff Otani. He's got great stuff. Otani is legitimately one hundred mile narrow pitcher. I mean, the guy has a legit fastball. This isn't one of those made up. Hey, he's got disability gyro ball. Dice que Matsuzaki had this Giro ball. Whatever the hell that was didn't help them much it a one year the Red Sox, right? Eighteen and three or something gyro ball didn't do much after that. But Otani was hyped as having this great arm, and he has a great army's got a tremendous bat. But the reason why I think he's the most valuable player in baseball is he's the only guy that can still give you a lot even coming. For a big injury because he's capable of doing both. The major league level. That's what's like we've had guys these guys in the minor leagues. Tried both. Okay. This guy right now in the minor leagues. Maybe the raise does both here, and there we've had guys come out of college Brooks Kieschnick coming out of Texas. He pitched he hit we've had guys in college Kelly. I don't know if you remember him he was aspect and he was traded to the Padres. Micah Owings member him. Yes. He did it from Georgia's. He's still around. You're right. Keel out at the same time. But he. A lot of things to be able to hit too. You know, what I'm talking about is designer thing. He's. Yep. The needles, but that's the thing. I mean Otani legitimately is a top major league hitter. And a top major league pitcher you vote him. Now that he's he has one thousand nine hundred fifty Aubrey is three point three one era. Fifty innings pitch is he your rookie of the year? In the American League. Here's the thing. Fifty one innings pitched a lot of closures barely pitch over fifty one innings in a season. If he gets to twenty five home runs. Here's the thing. Probably. Yes. Because he would then have lived up to expectations if he's. Yeah. I would too. Yeah. I'd give him the Hindu and do put up Miguel onto hard. He's hitting three hundred with twenty year hit. If do hard gets three hundred twenty six homers ninety nine years, forty five doubles. He's getting the award. He's getting the award and do har-. Yes. I'll tell you. He's making a close Otani is making it very, you know, what he would have to hit ten home runs, and he's already had two three the last seven weeks. He's gonna have to get the twenty five why into just hit another one. So. As mccutchen. Very similar swings by the way. Wow. Is Emma coaches first home runs the Yankee. I think it is. It is actually. Yeah. I'll tell you what. That's that's a battle. Glacier tours things out all those in to eighty with like twenty three homers and like sixty five rivers. He's back in there. He's back because he has much less at bats. Right. Although Tani's got less at bats than him. But he's back in that discussion too. But the hype of Otani in the fact that he's met the hype to a point that might get him some votes that might get him some votes, and he's also hitting home runs with a torn UCLA, which is kind of interesting as well. That's a great question can Otani still win the rookie of the year even with that. Interesting to see how that plays out. That's a fun race. It's like NL Cy Young. That's going to be interesting to see how that turns out AL rookie of the year. Now that's gonna be interesting race because of Otani, but Otani will have the he's going to have the Tommy John surgery. I know it's up to the player. But in the end, what are the treatments are there? Right. What what could he do? But I think it is fascinating that he's still able to hit. He's obviously hitting a ton right now. Here's the thing. That's scary. When he gets regular at bats. He's getting more and more comfortable, and you're noticing that. And I think next year what is job is. And he's a fulltime D H that's going to be interesting because if he gets five hundred to six hundred at bats what kind of damage will Shohei Ohtani do around the American League in during interleague play. But here's the problem for the angels algebra pools is still locked up for three years, right? Does this take? Well, I don't care about taking that bats out of Albert pools hands Albert pools is not a good hitter anymore. But Albert polls can't play first base every day right now. You really can't. I mean, he's he's just I mean, they may try but he's moving to the front office. You can they owned seventy ninety million over three years because remember they backloaded that contract..

"Rather have Tommy John surgery. I can't even pitch trans Siberian orchestra kind of feel elbow by the way. How were you able to not to get go back to whatever. How are you able to still bat and hit home runs whilst needing Tommy John surgery? I don't know. It's the weirdest thing in the world. How are you like? Oh yeah, that's it. Career, his surgery. It's gonna take them out until twenty twenty. It's gonna take for. Oh yeah. But by the way you're still in the lineup tonight. Shouldn't he be the rookie of the year? What's he? Gonna eighteen home runs just under fifty RBI's and he's got four wins. I believe is a pitcher. I mean, I know that you have an do a har- with the Yankees who in glacier Torres, but you know what he's done that hasn't been done since Babe, Ruth. I think he has to be the rookie of the year. It's going to be interesting with the awards this year because it's not typical. I think degrom is your Cy Young winner, and I hope the voters, you know, understand just exactly how brilliant he has been mclovin. Can you check on Jacob degrom. I remember reading or hearing about it. He is giving up three runs or less. I think in like twenty one consecutive starts. Does that sound paulie? Do you got the number twenty five hundred? Five consecutive starts of three run. That's never been done before. I think in modern baseball history. It's era right now is one point. Six eight, can you? I don't think that's ever been done. You know, even in nineteen sixty eight when they raise the mound and you had Bob Gibson one point one, two I don't know of anybody has had this kind of dominating season for pedestrian lineup, like the Mets. Yeah. Mclovin Steve Carlton in one thousand nine hundred ninety two Phillies I I don't know if you remember this year. All I do. They were the worst team in baseball won every game base. Well, he won almost half their games. Twenty seven twenty seven. They won fifty. Seven I think attack is he RA might have been one point seven, two back then. But Steve Carlton was. Unbelievable. That might be the greatest single season in modern baseball history. When you consider I they won less than sixty games and he won twenty seven of them. They win fifty nine games. Yeah. Okay. So he he, he want more than half. Yes, todd. The Gigiri had that to amazing was a twenty eight and three year. You've got to put him right up there as I can look in seventy eight. Did we? The Gidron was great, but he was playing for a team that won the pennant and they. I mean, that's different Carlton one hat over half of their games. Amazing. Couple of phone calls in here. Start with Matt and Colorado. Hey, Matt. What do you have? Do you have for me. Eight in a first time long time. Five eleven one sixty five. So I was just hoping you could explain to me so Levy on bills holding out. And he said, he doesn't want to be a Steeler next year. So what's he want like a one year contract? So he gets his fourteen million. Sorry, go ahead. I think he wants to be able to get through the season be somewhat productive, but be healthy limited number of touches and then go sign this second contract. I think that's what the goal is. I don't. You know, he doesn't want to get hurt. And if the if I'm the Steelers, I'm load him up and giving him the ball as much as possible because a, he's my best player and two. We're not gonna have him next year in, but later on Belle's agent knows this. And that's why they're, they're like, no, we're not gonna show up and play all the games here because there's not. There's no bargaining. There's no negotiations going on here. It can't get more money there. He just doesn't want. He just doesn't want to get hit. Yeah, a couple of games and then he'll play for. Fourteen games. No, there's talk that maybe sits out the first nine games and then comes back for the ten th game, and then he gets credit for this year to become a free agent. Yeah, thank you, Matt, Bob in South Carolina. Hi, Bon hike and, hey, interesting..

"Shohei Ohtani has to get Tommy John surgery. That is semi breaking news that news has done been broke. But not too terribly long ago. And of course, that means he will miss the entire season. I would guess that. They're not gonna have him swing a bat. So the for those of you thinking, well, can you swing the bat after you've had Tommy John? I know he will be by all accounts, he will be shelved for the entire season next year, which is obviously disappointing. Whenever a pitcher goes down to Tommy John surgery. It's not good news because you feel like a chunk of their career is going missing. And. A got me thinking, I know that guys come back better than ever after Tommy John surgery. But this is to me, this is another indication that Shohei Otani. Will not end up doing both forever pitching and hitting. Eventually he will have to choose and the reason behind that is the angels can kind of look at this situation and say, you know, what if we wouldn't have thrown him back out there. And maybe this is true. Maybe this isn't. But there's gotta be prevailing thought with the angels. That if they wouldn't have tried to get him back on the mound that maybe he could've finished out the season. And then not needed. Tommy, john. Maybe maybe not. But it's such a tricky situation. Because if you're the angels, you're looking at like this dude paired with Mike trout in the lineup can be pretty epic. But you can never have enough starting pitching. So to me, not only are the angels losing a pitcher. They're losing one of their best hitters as well. And I feel like they'll come back next year. Maybe it's not even next year. Maybe it's, you know, maybe it's not the year that Otani will come back. Maybe it's a year after that. But at some point they're going to have to decide because this injury hurts them doubly. Because it's taking a bat other lineup in a pitcher out of the rotation. Obviously being the modern day. Babe Ruth, did not I don't think necessarily contributed to him having Tommy John. But I don't know that for a fact I think if you're the angels, you're in a really difficult position. And you're looking at like. Yes. There are injuries that he could sustain as a hitter that will cause him to miss a significant amount of time. But how many hitters need Tommy, John? How many hitters sustain an injury that keeps them out for an entire season. And you paid this guy to hit as well as pitch. I would imagine. My prediction is that Shohei Ohtani comes back in two years. And he becomes a scantly used pitcher. You know, like they need a late. They need a bullpen arm. Long relief something like that. I think they go Tani. But I think I really think Otani future is a hitter. I really do. I think that's the choice. The angels will make because Otani as a hitter has the chance to be more special than as a pitcher. As a pitcher. He could be solid. But as a hitter he could be one of the best. So disappointing that they're going to lose him for an entire year. Yeah. We'll just hope dangerous. Don't treat him like the national treated, Stephen Strasburg. Yeah. The house that worked out like Stephen Strasburg. Pretty good pitcher. But the nationals. Just didn't like. Just so fresh had been so frustrating as nationals fan, and I don't know how many of those exist in the world. But if you are one the way that the nationals did it with Stephen Strasburg was ridiculous. Some of you couple of your other texts here before we take a break. The raiders should have signed MAC five minutes after the regular season. I think Khalil Mack was going to sit out. Let we get news today that levian bell will not be available for the Browns game. I think that's who they played the Browns. This won't be available for the season opener because he didn't report today by I think it was two o'clock our time or sometime this afternoon. Bottom line is he didn't report Levy on bell fantasy alert fantasy alert will not be eligible to play on Sunday. I think Khalil Mack. Does the same thing. I think Khalil Mack holds out. Any holds out. I made a prediction on the show a week or so ago that I thought Khalil Mack would not appear in any football game until week five. I thought he would hold out. But to the textures point how long is the guy willing to hold out and lose out on game checks and everything like that. Maybe Jon Gruden got a little bit too impatient. And if he would have just held out a little longer Khalil Mack might a cave. But I don't think Khalil Mack agrees to join the raiders when he loses his first game. Check. I think he was willing to sit out for multiple weeks. Answer to the crunch time question. We posed earlier about cheese pizza today is cheese pizza day, by the way, our friends here at the purple toad are offering buy one get one half off. If you get a pizza, which may or may not be related to cheese pizza day. But it is quite the Winky. Dink cheese is never a Goto. But if it is there, I will happily eat it. And that's my point don't only order cheese pizzas because that is insulting as a guest at your home. But if you give me cheese or pepperoni. I may go with cheese. I just don't want it as my only option. I don't think there's a price.

"Sorry, I was fearful of this and I was really hoping it wouldn't have to own what Jeff Fletcher from the Orange County Register reporting Shohei Ohtani had an MRI today. It showed new UCLA damage. Tommy John surgery has been recommended. Now if he has Tommy John surgery that puts him out for part of next year. Right? Yeah, that'll put them all the way to the middle of next season. Yeah, at best. That's okay. So George, that we can ask you a question that I brought up to Mason in fasttrack. So the angels have this really weird problem. They signed Albert pools to this albatross of a contra. It has eighty seven million dollars left on it. All right. Twenty eight twenty nine and thirty guaranteed all the way through over the next three years. The problem with pools is that you have Otani ready to take over at d. h. and most people are indicating that they're going to be. They're gonna have a new manager next year busters telling us, it's going to be Eric Chavez. The former as third baseman who's working in their organization. So new manager. I said to Mason Mason agreed with me. I think the smartest thing the angels could do is cut Albert pool. It's a check for eighty seven million and tell them to go, yeah, but now no Otani for you, do exactly the same thing. You wait a minute. You can Deitch pool Holtz and he's not. But he's he bringing anyone into the seats at this date. He means going to get to seven hundred home runs. So you're saying that that that is the reason that people. Yeah, people. I mean, I think he's like sixty away, but it would be the Bill to it, right? Can he get sixty in three years? Twenty and twenty. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean because erosion is there to Mason's point does if you if you owe coming back at some point and if he does, you still have the same problem. It's just a matter if you want to delay, but listen to us home run totals forty thirty one twenty three nineteen. Yeah, that's why it's not a guarantee. It's a, it's an absolute with ruins his career total for six thirty three. So he needs sixty seven more. Yeah. It's not going to be with the angels. Is it going to be with anybody? What team would want that. Well, nobody's trading for let me tell you something. He'll be released. Sixty four RBI's literally grows on trees last.

"Hopped aboard highpaying job hearing great jody about yourself good preach you're coming on board here's a question i feel i need to ask you because you are as big an expert on tommy john surgery is everybody i know i the yankees going to get bird burned by dealing gangs in there talented young i draft pick but they gave the yesterday in the deal to oakland who is recovering from tommy john surgery it's impossible to say how a guy is going to come back but uh there have been more cases than not where our players come back and are every bit as good as they were before or hand i have no uh knowledge first second or third hand of how james dupree aliens rehab is going right now so honestly i don't know but the yankees gave up a lot to get sunny great if we can't look at that i know everyone saying they didn't give up way pretoria's they didn't give up champ atoms are frazier uh sheffield's i mean they they held don to their guys who on prospect less uh are the highest rank but uh or hamid peio is going to be in every day second baseman with a special tool in his legs and uh james brilliant has a chance to be i think probably worst case scenario number three or four starter but if he comes back healthy uh he's a to potentially with the stuff to be a what and uh justin fowler is the guy who i know people nikki's organization mike better than quit frazier uh and while a ruptured patella tendon is uh about as bad of it injury as you can get for a guy who's game is predicated on his ability to run into cover ground in center field he's still a a legitimately very good prospect so i think the age did really well with sunny gray but i also think at the yankees needed to get a picture of his ilk in the fact that he can rogue game one or game two in a playoff series she gets pitcher wild card game if you need uh and that he's under contract with two more years after this year so you theoretical you get two warplanes off runs from him obviate cupid with added do.
