"Season lowery. Still you know he. He dealt with soreness in his left knee in February of last year. And then made nine plate appearances. All season did not play an inning. Defensively because of a cascade of injuries off of that He's back in spring training. Hasn't been in a game yet. But he's been in all of the workouts these kind of a Full Participation Guy. I guess if this is like a football parlance but he's wearing an enormous brace on his left leg. That goes basically from the middle of his tied down to his shin. It's the largest brace that I have seen an athlete. Where the scene even football players even offensive Lineman or not wearing braces the size. So I think it's a matter of whether he feels comfortable wearing that in an actual game. I don't know what he can do if he's not wearing it because he was still having issues with his leg in the off season ten months after initially feeling the pain in his leg so I I think there's still a little bit confused as to exactly what's going on and how best to move forward so I think with him it's even though he's a head of Cessna's in the protocol in the process right now i. I feel like it's harder to say when or if he'll contribute to this team on the field in the regular season. That is for even suspect as the mets went from an eighty two year. Old Pitching coach Phil Regan to thirty-three-year-old pitching coach. Jeremy Hefner that's gotta be some sort of record you recently wrote about. Hefner so how may do things differently? What does he bring to the team? Yes they they've really overhauled their their whole pitching coach position and strangely enough. It's not because they went from from Regan to hefner's they went from Dave Island The start of last season. Who is more of an old school traditional? Rub some dirt on it. Kind of pitching coach To hefner who is more well versed in the analytical side of things I went over to two twins camp last week to talk to a bunch of pitchers who worked with with hefner. They're you know they made the same point. You Know Ben. I don't know if you've heard about the word conduit up between the Front Office and the Dugout. That was a word that was used. There is a guy who understands what the analytics are. But then tells it to you in a way that you as a player understand kind of regardless of your knowledge of analytics you know the twins have guys like Trevor. May who know a lot about it And they can really dug in deep with him. We got some other guys who are less interested in it on the surface. He's able to explain it to them. In a way that you know they could understand and take to the field and used productively. So I think that's the hope is that they have that that better communication between pitching coach and the pitchers at able to get the most out of their pitchers. Like we were talking about wheeler there was still the belief in the Industry. That the mets were not maximizing Zach wheelers talent and certainly with Noah syndergaard that same skepticism exists across baseball. That Noah syndergaard were to go to the Houston Astros. Tomorrow he would be Garrett Cole or something like that and this guy had a four three array for them last year So I think their hope is with hefner onboard the gut debris Jeremy Accardo in the middle of last season as an the pitching strategist then in the assistant pitching coach now. They've kind of advanced. They've got more advanced camera work on the road and all the Rep Soto and enter. Tonic stuff That that they can be more in line with the rest of the industry and get the most out of their pitchers in a way they may be weren't for time last couple years. We're going to force you to predict their record in a second. But I WANT TO ASK US. More general Competitive Landscape Question We're projecting the mets for eight wins at Fan Graphs. We have them well in the thick of their race but they're obviously in a very competitive division. I'm curious how they view themselves positioned this year and then going forward. Yeah so we haven't heard Brodie van wagging issue the kind of come get us edicts that he did last off season about about the National League East. So He's been a bit more humble about it. This is a good and deep division. The braves made the jump last season. That the people that the mets were in office did not expect them to make from Ninety Winston Ninety seven and then obviously the nationals won the world series. So it's a it's a difficult division. Probably the deepest. I don't know if it's the deepest in the National League. The central has a bunch of good teams too. But you know if the mets were in a different division that eight win ceiling would be the idiot when mark would feel a little bit closer to being at the top of the Division that maybe it does here but I think this is a team that they're not looking to time when they're competitive with the rest of their division if were They probably took a few years off. Because Atlanta looks very well positioned for the next several years So they van wagon and always says win now and in the future And they seem leaning more heavily on the win now right now and seeing how it plays out over the next year or so right. Twelve make prime deal with the projected number there. But you do not have to agree. So how many wins? Do you foresee for the mets in two thousand twenty. Yeah it's interesting because all of the off field drama that they've had in the in the winter is kind of obscured that this is probably the most talented team they've brought to spring training. Maybe in a decade. I think you can make a case. The two thousand sixteen team off of the pennant was talented as this team. But other than that. I think you're really going back to two thousand nine. And the Primes of of David Wright and Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran Carlos Delgado all of those guys hurt that season and they lost ninety games but this is probably a you know as talented teams. They've had since then. That said I think the defensive issues or something that don't show up on paper as much when you're looking at kind of this lineup versus Atlanta's lineup Washington's lineup for phillies lineup. And there are some people on this roster that are worry a about what an injury to Wilson Ramos does to this team. Because there's such a big drop off between him and the next person you have in Tomasz Neto as your backup catcher. You worry you know if you lose a Jacob degrom or Noah syndergaard or Marcus Stroman for any considerable length of time. That really changes your outlook on this team. And you're you're hinging a lot of your your bets too much improved bullpen. And and that's always difficult to to feel confident about so. I think they're probably end up somewhere similar to where they were last year. They want eighty six last year. I think probably take a more linear path to it. Rather than the a terrible first half awesome second half but I I'd probably settle on about eighty seven. Wins all right. Well you can read about the mets and hear about the mets at the athletic courtesy of Tim. You can also find him on twitter at Tim. Britain where you went from the Red Sox to the mets interest in one eventful news-making teams to another. Do you ever dream of going to cover the padres for awhile or someone. "One, one lagaras swinging bouncer left side past the diving. Turner back candidates. Short Cory Seager long throw to firs to get as nice play by Seeger pretty questions about the arm after the Tommy, John. Right. The answered some that throw deepened a whole that was very strong and great effort by Justin Turner. But even with the humid shield, Cory Seager stay focused on the ball had good feet. Get his arm and position to make a strong throw across the diamond. So one out Tomas Nido the catcher anyone ninety four with a couple of home runs Kershaw. Fires fastball for strike one. Nato is thirteen game. He's six thirty one and he's done the bulk of the catching went to gram on the mound. Strike pitch, right handed batter takes a slider dirt one ball, one strike, as degrom in four starts as you're with Neto catching, as put up an ERA at point. Eight seven. Tomas Nido it a walk off Homer on Saturday against the Tigers. And it's nothing. Mickey callaway. Wouldn't really want to say that he's personal catcher now. But he's gotta be one one pitch away. So you're saying he's not necessarily Charlie O'Brien Greg Maddux, not officially, but I mean the results speak volumes. And you gotta make sure your ace is comfortable to one swinging. "Seven seven seven. Welcome back to the fan. Laurie Rubinsohn here with you break up the Mets they hit five hundred as they head out to the west coast for big series against the best team in the National League the dodgers to talk about the Mets we bring in Tim Healy from Newsday. Hey, tim. How are you? Excellent. Thanks. How are you? I'm doing. Well, thanks, so. All right. For the Mets. You never know which, which way, they're heading and what to believe at the moment. They're playing well but they head out to Los Angeles to face the dodgers four-game series. And they open up with Jacob degrom on the mound. Let's start there with is Tomasz Neto. Jacob degrom personal catcher for the for the moment. And, and should he be that's actually a very interesting situation because a little over a week ago in Miami? Nikki Callaway was adamant that nobody was going to have a personal catcher and things weren't going well enough for the Mets for anybody to deserve or demand, a personal catcher. But then, of course, grounds previous start this past homes. Dan, he's match with them up Neto today Wilson, Rommel's clots tables around most was the Mets catcher, which suggests that must need a we'll catch tomorrow. So if been went to Neto catches tomorrow, I look forward to asking Mickey Callaway. Hey, you know what the deal is going to be a regular thing because at this point, you know, if nito indeed is in there tomorrow, it does look like he's going out of his way to, to share those together, which makes sense because they do work, so well together, I try not to put too much stock in catcher ERA because it's not really a great stat. But it's it's hard to deny a lot like when Jacob the ground for whatever reason last year was so good with them as. Rocco once the Mets acquired, Missouri co this year degrom is very good to Las Lido. So it's a weird thing. But at this point, if you're the Mets, you should take whatever advantage real or perceived, you can get now has I understand Wilson. Rama's just hit a few home runs, but overall on the season has his offense been. Been such an advantage isn't such an advantage that, that the Mets should not be looking to do something like get Neto into the into lineup more if there are, let's say to Graham, and even maybe Noah Syndergaard, a couple of pitchers who prefer throwing to. This season. So far has been disappointing. Yes. Obviously get a pretty good weekend. Those tool and went on Saturday. Oh but I don't think his disappointing offense. So far is enough to warrant. Tomasz Neto playing more frequently I if you want to kind of arrange things, so that they can catch Rahm shirt. I get that. Absolutely. But really you signed walls around those because one he's good at hitting and you haven't had a catcher that is good. Hitting a really long time and historically, at least he's good at throwing out baserunners in the Mets had somebody who's in control the running game like that in several years. So at this point, you still need to rely on, we'll surround Los in record and Bank on him coming around which knows this weekend was, you know, glimpse of that Tomasz Neto really his, his, his ceiling, probably, as, as a backup catcher, not so much, the, you know, fifty fifty foot soon guy on. So I think what the Mets have been doing with his almost taking fish oil is the right call and you know it's up to the player to play up to a standard. We seen so much with the Yankees this season all these fill in replacement players playing so well, the Mets lately, have had a lot of injuries, and it seems every day, there's a different player coming and going, and yet the you know, as you mentioned, whether it's Wilson Ramos, or some of the others, jed, jed Lowrie a free agent hasn't even played some of the better bigger name players, maybe have struggled or not played as well. And some of these guys off the street suddenly, contributing today, Dany Maria with a with a three run opposite field home run, and that seems to becoming a thing here. So. Of when you look around whether it's Etcheveria and Carlos Gomez and all of these players. How much of how much is some of these fill ins who among them? Do you feel like are sustainable in terms of making a real contribution to the Mets the season? Well, that's an interesting question because of all the injuries right now as sort of force some of these guys onto the roster because the Mets don't have any other choice. So today, for example, Michael Conforto came back, and we saw them move on from Rajai Davis. Had that dramatic home homerun Uber ride and all that fun story for day. But the reality is rising Davis is at this point is career. That's the sort of player. He is kind of waiting in the wings for, if there's a need at the major league level. And when the injured players come back, he's, he's, he's a guy that a luck we'll see what happens when, you know, macneil Nimmo come back, and those guys are McNeil's closer than Nimmo for sure. But, you know, it it's always a hypothetical. Oh, when the Mets are fully healthy, what will arrive and, and that, that never happens, you know, there was a, a case a couple. Two weeks ago when we bought Lowry with about to return and the question was oh, are they going to send you own Davis, which sounds silly now or Etcheveria, or Braxton who is still a team and they never had to make that decision because lower he got hurt again? And he's still, you know weeks away as far as those fillings of aiding impact this week, and who can, you know have a longer stretch with the team, I think at any edge of a refit that mole, especially because the Mets seem as its into carry and play Lewis ski or may, you know, in only good idea to have Ahmed resort was literally, you're only shortstop on the roster. But also to me, Aaron ulcers are really interesting player, who has disappointed this year for the Phillies and you know what the giants for a hot second. But you think about what one lagaras has been the last couple of years kind of defense I fill in. You know, maybe starting it's other players are hurt. And then the Mets got John, Braxton in January, kind of thinking that Brock's could be that sort of player for the next couple of years, obviously, that didn't work out the Mets moved on, but also has several years of team control. So if he can figure out how to be somewhat productive. Useful player in the part time role which has been his problem. The past couple of years that I can see him being an actual quality player for the but yeah, the, the bottom line is these, these films players are fillings, for reasons, so as much fun as this week has been for the Mets. They'll be better off when they get their first graders back Fisher speaking of which have questioned from follow on Twitter, wanted, the updates specifically on the squirrel house. Jeff Neal doing. And when can met fans expect to see him back in the lineup. Well, it sounds like he's still doing well. They is hamster issue was minimal that. The Mets didn't even bother with an MRI before putting him on the disabled list. So they don't think it's that serious at all. Jeff macneil himself was hopeful that'll be just a ten days. So if things go well in coming back for the weekend series in Arizona, this, this road trip, they go to LA for four and then Harrison for three him coming back in Arizona seems feasible at this point. But, like we said with Larry a couple of minutes ago, you know, that actually, you know, you have to actually see that to fruition before, really banking on anything. And another question. I'll also I think an interesting one that a follower, asked me, which is what, what do you, see as the Mets long-term plan for Dom Smith? I think inevitably dumped be traded. He's done very well this part time role and depending on how the season goes, I don't know that trade -sarily will come this season. I think he's expendable for them because if Pete Alonzo. So whether it's near the trade deadline is the Mets try to add or this winter, when there is a bigger picture. Retooling the roster. I think Dominic Smith future is not with the Mets of the Mets, of course won't admit that publicly and they, you know, praised him appropriately for all the good work. He's done kind of transitioning to pinch hitter defensive replacement role. But as long as unless pita, Lonzo drops off dramatically in its production and get figured out by major league pitching Dominic Smith doesn't really have a role long-term on the meant. So it'll be best for the individual. And for the team to work out a mutually beneficial trade there at some point. Have you ever been around team that where it seemed like the mood and the pendulum on the team swung? So much as it does with, with this Mets team where it's a sweat, by the worst team in in baseball this, essentially trying to lose in the Marlins, then they turn around and come home and, and win what like. Go, what six one, you know? So. Ed. They may be bad teams. Also. But they went six and one and suddenly, the narrative is a little bit different around Mickey Callaway. Have you ever seen it? Swing as as violently as it does with these Mets. Probably not. And I think the last two weeks, I've been a great example. But even thinking back to the beginning of the season, they go six and one on their first road trip or five and one on their first, bro trip, nine and four to start the year. And then they go back to being mediocre, which extended through that Lamey weekend, then this whole there, suddenly, six to one again. So they ever pretty streaky roller coaster team so far. It seems which isn't necessarily conducive to long term success, but I think if you're the Mets at this point, you know, considering where they were exactly one week ago five to New York after getting swept by the Marlins. Not sure what was going to go on with the manager. Then yeah, you're absolutely take six and one. And I just mentioned. Are bad teams. But if you're going to get to the play offs and the Mets are a long way from doing that. But if you're going to get to the playoffs, you have to beat up on the bad teams which have been good at all season aside from last week in Miami that being the this change exception. But you're, you're right there, a lot, a lot of flings. There's a tangible difference in the clubhouse from, you know last week the Miami to this, this past home stand that just wrapped up. So safe to say they're having a lot more fun now and make Calloway admitted it, you know during that national series when you win games. There's a different air at different vibe in the clubhouse. And, you know, I think success breeds more success. It's a lot more fun to come to work. When you're doing a good job. All right. I think it's more fun when the when the squirrel is back. So personally looking forward to that one. Have fun out on the west coast. Enjoy Shevess ravine and Tim. We'll catch up with these sounds good. Thank you very much, twelve forty time for not.

"Your overnight. All right. Resetting the show. Here we go. We've got giants draft. What was your favorite pay? We've got jets draft. What was your overall take from Mike maccagnan? I won't ask your favorite best case. Because clearly that's gotta be coining Williams. But what did you think of the rest of the draft? We've got Yankees the bad news bears. I mean, the New York Yankees the replacements. All they do is win the of the best record in all of major league baseball since April sixteenth. So guys get injured every day. Someone else goes on on the injured list. It doesn't seem to matter the Yankees just win baby. Eleven to last thirteen games. They go on the road. They play Anaheim. They played the giants. It doesn't matter. I know those teams are not good. You can say that. But all you can do is play in front of you and a good team would be expected to win a series. You're not expected to sweep. So you go out you're playing on the road in San Francisco, you'd expect you went to three the go out there, and they sweep it doesn't seem to matter. A truly is a next man up. So they're playing some terrific baseball. The Mets me my part ways. They win on Sunday. The Mets part ways with Travis d'arno finally that needed to happen. Should the Mets have brought in. Instead, they they bring up Tom Tomasz Neto. They're young catcher from triple a good defensive catcher. He actually got the big hit on Sunday to put the game out of reach. But should they have brought up Rene Rivera from triple a defensive veteran. Should they have gone and called up Devon, Missouri? Co the personal catcher for Jacob degrom last year. What do you think the Mets should do as far as the backup catching position? And oh, by the way, the squirrel and the polar bear keep hitting and the Mets do get a win eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six and coming up after the eleven twenty update I will be joined by Brian Compton from NHL dot com, and we will dive into the islanders and their loss. They are. Now, we know to whole big holes that they out of according to their their coach Barry trots, but trust to he's been down to before. And that experience, and you hope the confidence from that coach will continue to rub off on his team and the owners can bounce back and make this a series. Let's head to the phones Carl in Manhattan, what's going on Karl? Laurie. I just want to talk to you about Kevin Durant. Greatness. And then I got a hot take for you. I can see is the greatest score in the history. I'd eat the best offense a player to ever play the game. I really do six foot eleven he could do everything he can shoot from all three spot. I've never seen a guy score the ball that eve and the percentages that he's scorned. The hiccups fifteen forty five. Twenty six shot. If this guy comes to the Knicks. He's going to be the greatest, Nick. Play. I swear to God. I don't know about. Unfortunately, I think he'll have if he look we should be so lucky God willing. He comes to the next number one. Number two. He is a phenomenal offensive player. There's no doubt about that. But just recognizing the Knicks will have a window with them. He's already what like thirty one years old. So he's still is prime age. But you only get that. When you say he'll be the greatest Nick of all time. We'll see if he delivers a title, then that then that would be fantastic. But but in terms of, you know, Patrick Ewing, and you know, and CLYDE Frazier and some of those other Knicks to be better than that. He's not going to have as long run. So we better deliver some titles. If you wanna go and call him, the the the greatest Nick, I appreciate it Carl. But tonight where we've got draft and a lot of other topics. We're going to have tons of time to dive into Durant and the Knicks if it does come to pass, but I got a bunch of people on hold. So let's go back Joe in queens. Yeah. Some point Laurie. Could you elaborate I agree with you on now? But can his spell out your reasons, you know, I just wanna get you a tape. Yeah. On why they needed to get rid of him. Well, first of all I said this a little earlier in the show, but. Quite obviously d'arno was not hitting or playing well defensively. So when a guy is supposed to be the backup catcher. And is I think they're more for offense of reasons and he's terrible offensively than obviously after you get rid of them. I also don't think he profiles. Well as a backup catcher to me. I prefer a backup catcher to be a defense. I kind of guy especially when you have a good offensive catchers your starter in Wilson Rama's. And clearly Travis star. No is is not that guy defense I backup catcher. So that's another reason why I thought they needed to get rid of him. And he's coming off the surgery. He clearly didn't seem to be a shell of himself. Frequently injured guy just think I don't think he made sense in so many ways. So those are just a few of the reasons. Nice guy. I wish him well. But I don't think his game. Actually, he's a long swing. I don't think that profiles. Well is a backup. He's a guy. I think that if he's going to do well at all it's the play every day. Why do I know the position now on the draft? First of all just on the giants. You know, they the first pick of the traffic at the superstar five ten guys and my an interest to short, you know. And then if you're looking at Haskins. The game is changed and four for Cuyler Murray to succeed at quarterback in the NFL. Clearly, he has the arm for it. He has running ability for it at five ten Willie have the size, and he's not the same kind of strength. As a as a Russell Wilson sort of five ten five eleven sorta guy Willie of the. The size to play the position he's going to have to adjust his I think his release point a little bit in the NFL at times because he's going to have a lot of big guys closing in on him. We'll see if he can. But he certainly is a phenomenal epileptic talent and showed the ability mentally in college. I don't know. I it'll be fun to watch. What what happens with Kyle Murray in the pros? What was talking to him? Was. He was set wasn't. And I think he was about six, but the game is also has also changed a little bit. And I think when you're tarkenton certainly is famous for running all over the place, but with the kind of offense that you'd think cliff Kingsbury the new head coach in Arizona going to run. They're gonna catering to the the sort of style that that collar Murray played in in college. So we'll see if he can be successful or not. Let's go to Anthony. In queens. What do you got an Anthony? Hey, laurie. How you doing doing? Well. Thank you, sir. What do you wanna talk about essentially just on the draft? I think at the end of the day. Everybody wants to talk about the NFL changing the third. I think we always overreacted things like that just in regards to Jones dictates a chance that he might be better than what people have a few things where they're saying that you know, the Redskins another division teams. They did want him at the end of the day. But just a quick point about the last thing about the whole the, you know, again with the revolutionary the game off from the time where it was ground the pound fullback, you know, the middle type of Bank. My whole thing is I think the cardinals are ridiculously stupid forgiving away. Josh Rosen for a guy that's got a lot of question marks. And to bring in a bozo like cliff Kingsbury couldn't even go five hundred in the trash pick the big worst offensive. They're going to do and it's perfectly fair question. The the strategy and thinking of the cardinals they may not have made the right hire. And last year may have been a disaster. But I'm I'm sort of with you that they bring it in the head coach Lee did now getting rid of. A first round draft picks that you've traded up into the number ten overall pick last year and Josh Rosen. And meanwhile, the offensive line that Rosen played behind last year. I don't have a lot of people follow this or not but all five of his starting offensive lineman last year got hurt Menton playing behind five backups. That's what was going on in in Arizona last year. So I don't think we have a very good idea of what kind of player Josh Rosen will be as a starting quarterback in the NFL is to get the right head coach and the right coach offensive coordinator and the right coaching and all of that. And then we'll see. And Meanwhile, I really like what the dolphins are doing really smart move with the dolphins. So. You trade for Josh Rosen. You're only he's only costing you because Arizona paint all the big money for him. He's only costing you what two three million or something like that. It's not a big deal. And if he's great this year and shows promise, then terrific at a cheap price. You have your starting quarterback eve identified him, and you can use your needs next year in the draft to go get other players and improve if he's a bust. You didn't burn your starting quarterback? You didn't pay a ton of money to him. Not guaranteed money. You're not out a lot and you're a terrib- fine. If you're a bad team, then you have a top three draft pack for a draft that we know should feature to out of Alabama Herber at of Oregon and and from Georgia so next year shapes up as a pretty darn good quarterback class. If you're the dolphins here perfect situation, they played the draft beautifully. Now could Daniel Jones turn out to be a very good NFL quarterback. He certainly could. And I think every giant fan is hoping like heck that January Jones turns out to be a winner and an above average NFL quarterback. I'm hoping that. But we'll see Dave Gettleman took a big risk Michael in Vermont. When he got my phone. I'm a Jack fan by Danny Jones. Go be bed done. Eli is ship added chapter on his family. Yeah. The Phillies going to be better than than this year. Thanks for the call, Michael. Well, number one is Daniel Jones gonna get to play this year while the giants let him play in front of you realize going to have to do a bunch of losing. I think for for the giants to give him that opportunity. I don't know Tom Coughlin. The giants the years at ally. Manning when I was talking to a pulse Schwartz earlier from the post and he brought up allies rookie season. So Kurt Warner was the backup quarterback that year. And you I stood on the sideline with the clipboard there and watched Kurt Warner play quarterback. And Kurt Warner was down part of his career. He is hanging onto the football kind of fumbling a little bit and taking sacks down part part of his career. However, Kurt Warner was the starter for the giants. The giants got off to a five and two record. And then they lost two games in a row to get a five and four and there were veterans on that team like Michael Strahan players. They wanted them to stay with Kurt Warner gave them a better chance to win had a five and four record. They still had a winning record Tom Coughlin took a look at that football team and said they were heading in the wrong direction. And now is the time to get the rookie in there. Get Eli in there and Eli took his looks at year. He was not particularly great. He was learning. He was figuring it out ally struggled. He had his moments. But really is I three seasons. He was kind of struggling and then he came on. And that confidence building win against the patriots. When they were undefeated that last game of the season sort of help transform ally. Manny and propel him into the playoffs that year and ultimately the giants in Super Bowl. But. Are you know, are the giants going to have the courage and strength without Tom Coughlin there as the head coach is here will the giants have the courage and strength. If this team gets off to a five hundred record and clearly seems to not be going anywhere. Will they have the strength to put Daniel Jones in quarterback sometime in the middle of the season. So we can get an idea. So he can start to play being mediocre doesn't help anybody. How soon will the giant start the Daniel Jones era coming up after the break. I'm going to be joined by Brian Compton from NHL dot com. We'll talk some islanders hockey. Dennis Blair, Paul. I see you..

"No did not belong on the major league roster. He's a nice guy. I feel bad saying that. But that was obvious coming off of the surgery that he just was not ready to play in the major leagues. And I don't think he's the kind of player with his swing is a long swing. I don't think he is well suited to be a backup catcher. I think his sling is the kind of he's kind of player that if he's going to be decent is going to have to play every day backup catcher to meet profiles best as somebody who is a a defense plus defender defense, I kind of guy that's who you want in the talking to the to the pitchers in the pitchers room with, you know, looking at at film, and and being catching bullpens all of that you want that backup catcher to be a defensive sage, and certainly that's not what Travis star. No was. So we wish him the best. I hope he does. Well, but certainly not on the Mets major league roster and one benefit side benefit showing. Head right. There of the Mets having a triple eight franchise at Syracuse instead of Las Vegas, which never made any sense is that you can get a player here in time for day game, and that works well Tomasz Neto called up now fans, you wanna tell me it should have been Devon Mezrak. Oh, it should have been Rene Rivera. You can say all of that. But at least it's an improvement. And while this is a move that was maybe obvious and the Mets basically flushed over three million dollars down the drain with with the Travis star, no move. At least they made that move. It feels to me like I'll give Brody credit that at least they made that move in the past feels like the kind of move them in the Mets waited on waited on because there was three million dollars three plus million dollars involve at least they make the move Stephen Matt's pitches. Well, the Mets with the polar bear on the squirrel. They keep hitting fun team to watch. And the Yankees you wanna talk about a fun team to watch. It's absurd. What they're doing it. Seven three three seven sixty six sixty six that's the number for you to call in on. We will of course, taking your calls. Got about an hour of that coming up before we even get to guess, so call heavy to start off the program..

"We go to the third inning here at McCoy stadium in a scoreless ballgame between the PawSox in the Syracuse Mets and game two four between the two clubs and gave two of seven on this season, opening homestand or the PawSox. Eight nine one to two rather in the Syracuse sorta to shepherd here in the third and with the play by play my partner, Jay Berna. All right. Jim, thanks so much fittingly. We'll start it off with an old friend of mine. Rene Rivera former Trenton thunder member facing shepherd thirty three pitches so far for shepherd and the first offering here to Rivera is down for ball one. Manet one for twelve on the young season backing up Thomas Tomasz Neto the forty man roster. Catcher for the Mets and the one offering from shepherd off speed and off the plate for ball to you know, Rene Rivera. This is a guy that fell by the wayside came up with the Mariners initially, and then almost tumbled completely out of baseball. Here's the two. Oh, and it's outside for ball three. And the Yankees found him toiling and Camden New Jersey on the now defunct Camden river sharks. There comes the three pitch and it's just off the plate a four pitch. Walk as shepherd stairs. In Rivera is on third. Walk issue today for shepherd was brought along to bring up some of the other arms for the Yankees. Like, Manny Bedwell, oh, sit down and Batanes his and he did so admirably and then made his way up to the big leagues. And he's been a serviceable catcher ever since. Now, try to get back up with the Mets top of the order. Now. Here's Carlos Gomez Gomez for one today shepherd looking for two with linen Chaveas up the metal in the pitch a curveball bending out of the way Gomez. And it stays high for ball one. I like about Rivera Jay is his style is bright neon. Green shoelaces on the cleats in. Obviously the orange batting gloves team color, but pretty colorful get up for Rivera tonight. Here's the one pitch. Swing a fell back for a ball strike on Gomez little flair there for Rene Rivero. Turn on the black light. I mean, he's got. Score. This game of the third inning Gomez hitting one ninety on the year thirty three years of age and at one point feared hitter base dealer or the Milwaukee Brewers one one pitch inside and high on a fastball like Sheppard almost slipped as he came to the plate and account to and one on Gomez. Gomez two-time time star was part of a very crucial trade that went from a walkie to Houston to one pitch from shepherd fastball in there at the knees. Good pitch from Chandler shepherd and the count evens at two and two one on nobody out top of the third inning. And a score this game in game two of our four game series Pawtucket and Syracuse to pitch popped up as fouls this one back onto the awning over the grandstand seats play count stays to and to you know, who's in that trade. Jim from Milwaukee to Houston going back to Milwaukee was a couple of big name prospects and one that is really panned out for the brew crew to come it. Swung on a grounded awkwardly up the first base side but foul as roles by Travis over to tarp down the right field side and the count stays to and to Josh hater. Went from Baltimore to Houston. And then the deal from Houston to a walkie and exchange for this, man. Carlos Gomez, the Astros are really going to build around him back in two thousand fifteen but he just sorta washed his way. Last year was with the raise for a little bit. But couldn't really produce too fast ball high ninety one for ball three. In a way, you see somebody's once feared hitters in major league baseball at the top of the order for the Syracuse Mets Gomez followed by Espinosa runner on first is Rivera. No speed there. It'd be a three two on Gomez shepherd from the belt and the right hander throws high ball four and again lost the hitter at three to the third three to count where shepherd has put somebody on Rivera up to second fourth walkover all the first two on here for Syracuse. Jim prime scoring opportunity the first couple of walks J. He was Donna by much the walks leery. I know Tyrone even Rivera on ball four pretty borderline pitches. But that time the ball up, and it wasn't even close shepherd starting to lose it here a little bit. Let's see if he can kind of rain it back in. But that's coming up for the second time. They got a guy that could certainly drive the ball out of the ballpark Espinosa hitting to sixty nine on the year. Uh-huh. For one today with a groundout back to the mound. The PawSox again. Oh, look for a pair behind shepherd third baseman Miller in on the grass off the line. And that's been OSA awaits from the left hand batter's box. Switch hitter formerly of the Washington nationals. You might remember a couple of years that he had with the NATs where he had twenty home runs and one major the season. But. A lot of strikeouts. As well. Here's the pitch to espionage down in a way for ball. One. In fact, Espinosa led the National League one year and ks which nowadays is hard to do. Because.

We absolutely appreciate the coverage from the folks at our local television stations we won't need the guilty parties. They're great at their jobs. But let's turn the light off right now. We do ready for more baseball. With one out though, scored the bottom of the first inning, Bruce. They cast the oh now settling in to the right hand box. Right fielders four for nineteen. So far this season. I bitch is just low fastball from Colin down in zone. One in on Reuss. Nate who had a three run home run in Pawtucket SR. Last game on Tuesday out in buffalo. Here comes the one L or stay swings. Enrolls to short, Danny Espinosa, charges gloves and he throws on the run to first time. And there's a pair of ground. Ball outs for Casey Coleman? Just getting things started in the home opener. And there's no one on with two down for Michael Chaveas. On who you ask either the first or second highest ranked prospects in the Red Sox system. He's the former first round pick of the Red Sox outta high school. And this is his real first full taste of AAA. No, mike. I think we have the same situation going on down the third base line. I think we have another television crew with the camera at a light on third base. Umpire Alex, Tosi, go down and ask them to turn up as well. You know, what I always say providence is a competitive. We got camera crews on both sides. Michael Chaves the and he swings through the first pitch from Coleman for strike walleyes as a broadcast journalism major in college. I can certainly empathize with both parties and lighting is definitely everything. Oh wanted to fix it. In the third curve ball from Coleman on ball in one strike. It's good to see these home jerseys for the PawSox red numerals on the back and the names on the back of jerseys. The JV swings through breaking ball down in. It's one and two. That was new last year for the PawSox so Chaves here in the minor leagues gets the big league treatment. Jabe is stitched above his number twelve. Three for seventeen so far with a Homer in two driven in one to JV's. Takes a fastball that didn't miss by much near the outside corner to to know it didn't and he hit his spot. But she gave us a good. I'd lay off. The patch breaking ball outside and shave his checks swing and it's a full count. Casey Coleman goes to the Rasi Bank in that first outing of the season for Coleman a week ago. Five innings to earn runs three walks. Three strikeouts. Who solid three to Chaveas takes off the quarter ball four that's two pitches in a similar spot that Coleman dotty generated strike three on. He puts both hands on his hips before he gets the baseball back from his catcher Tomas Nido. A hard earned free pass. Mike janus? Nice job changes to we fell behind them account one into and laid off three straight pitches that were borderline on that outside corner. A pair of fastballs that looked a bit in Tyson, but job to earn that to walk. So Michael's first is Sam Travis climbs into the right hand box. No score. Bottom of the first. And the first pitch is low from Coleman ball one told the Coleman's in his early thirties. And he is spent parts of four seasons in the big leaks. I the cubs all the way back in two thousand ten a few years up and down there. And then with the royals briefly in two thousand fourteen one oh pitches. Swung on to second. Pereira picks it up near the bag and he'll throw to first and get Travis and three ground. Ball outs for Casey Coleman and the home half of the first inning, Jay walks. He's left. It. I go to the second with no score on the pasta radio network. Seventy seven percent of rural counties lack sufficient primary healthcare. Blue Cross Blue shield is working to fill that gap. "I'll be with you until two AM when I go away JJ. We'll keep you company for your overnight. All right. So one of my followers on Twitter had asked the question. He wanted me to ask this of micro Caro from the post, but. It. Now his question was if the Mets the Mets went for Wilson Ramos says catcher over. Yes, Mani Grondahl. And what was it specifically in terms of Grondahl? Why was there? A cost beyond what he might cost in dollars. What were what were those other costs associated with a Monte Grondahl if the Mets had signed him? And so here's the situation if you're less familiar with this is that. The dodgers who obviously the dodgers were Krahn dolls team last season. And they offered they made Grondahl a qualifying offer. Meaning that they give him an offer for a player that's about to be a free agent. If your team makes a qualifying offer. So they offer you a one year deal at whatever the qualifying offer rate. You know, call it eighteen million or so they offer you that? And if you turn it down then. That team gets compensation. Draft pick compensation if if you turn that deal down. Now, what the Mets would have had to have given up if they signed a free agent who who had been offered a qualifying offer. In addition to whatever dollars they signed him for with Granada. The Mets would have had to have given up forfeited their second round draft pick and five hundred thousand dollars in international signing bonus money, so. So there's two cost there in the upcoming major league baseball draft. The Mets would have lost their second round draft pick and for a team like the Mets they had a poor season last year and would be drafting fairly high a second round draft bake is pretty valuable and then the five hundred thousand international signing money. Well every. July second a new crop of players in international players become the the youngsters become available and you see team signing all these young players players international players who are not subject to being drafted not part of the draft. And each team gets a certain pool of money that you're allowed to spend to sign international players, and it's capped you can't smell, you know, you can only spend so much if you spend over it, then you're severely penalized. And in the in the following year, you eat the major league baseball doesn't let you spend very much at all. There's a big penalty. If you go over that initial that international slot now some teams are strategic about it. They go way way over in a particular year. And then they and then there are penalized for a few years before they can spend two slot again for the Mets it would've cost. Five hundred thousand out of that signing bonus pool. So it would have meant that they lost the second round draft pick if they signed grandma, and they gave up five hundred thousand could be that could be the value of a good young player. So it could cost them two other young players in the future restock their minor league system. So I get that. That was part of the thinking of not wanting to sign a yes, Monte Grondahl. I still liked him as a player. I think he's a good player. I would not have been unhappy. If the Mets signed him, but I understand the thinking behind it is it's not just money. If you sign dial, you would have had to have given up the potential the possibility of signing a couple of young good young players. So that's anyway, the explanation on that. As for the last caller before the break who was talking about Keith who wanted to know what wanted the Mets to sign a good backup catcher some. Like the Henry Blanco's in the world that they used to have somebody like Martinez Maldonado is a free agent. Really good defensive catcher to be the backup to Wilson Ramos. I'll tell you what they have a very good defensive catcher on their roster. And before you laugh about it. That's Tomasz Neto Tomasz Neto has a terrific reputation as a defensive catcher from the minor leagues. And even last season. He was good at pitch framing. So he he has the potential to be a good defensive catcher, the problem is he hit atrociously in the limited action that he saw last year that doesn't mean he's going to be that forever. He's only twenty four he'll probably start the year again in the minor leagues. And you see what happens and if he can develop that back just a little bit. He could develop into potentially. A solid defensive backup catcher, and the kind of player you talking about and looking for let's say back to the phones Edward Edmund Hatton. What's going on Edward? Yeah. Money. Lloyd. Welcome to the broadcast. I heard earlier that Rama got the by the Mets. Yes. Very good moving to tell you something done so four. I may like this guy has no, you know, what I'm going to change the team Brennan for new people and he's done a very good job. So far compared to the guy who did hero last year. He's off very zero. That's not true. You may not have liked to signings. But the Mets actually were active in free agency last year. And you may not have liked to they brought in whether that was resigning. Jay, Bruce, or Anthony spores Zakar is some of the moves they made. But. I understand that that people are disappointed in sandy Alderson and his tenure here. But let's say look, I hope that that the Brody years here will be successful. I hope that it will turn into something. Ed where? World Series title sometime in this window of the next two years. I hope that Brody states through his word when he was Jacob degrom agent last summer and said the Mets should sign. Jacob degrom to an extension. He actually said sign and retrieve him. I hope he is aggressive and does some of those things we'll see Jerry. Dalby? Ish move. I would like to see possibly get meeting. One one bad and another middle relief pitcher room. I'm hearing and asked him why is the possibility of going after Adam Jones, which would be I think a good fit. You get a guy who can maybe give you fifteen hundred. Good good center, fielder and engineers. Yeah. I don't know if he's who. Would you say is the bullpen guy? Andrew miller. And yeah, I don't see that. That would be great. I would love it. If they signed Andrew Miller. I don't think they will now that they've traded for the closer signed the where I think is going to be their eighth inning guy in in familia. I don't think they're going to be shopping that high in in the I think expect them to shop more in the discount racks for reliever, but but I think that and thanks as always for the call. I think that Adam Jones's certainly a name you're seeing bandied about their we've seen the Mets connected to AJ Pollock. Do they decide to spend for an AJ Pollock ID surprised pleasantly? So I think that would be great. But I don't expect it Adam Jones. It depends at his age. How many years that it would you know, how many years do they have to sign him for? I still like the move that the Braves made in signing. Josh Donaldson to a one year deal for twenty three million dollars. I would rather the Mets did something where they spent over spend a little and try and limit the years you're on a sign somebody like Adam Jones, go ahead, but make it make it. A high end I doubt he'll go for a one year deal, but make it a a two year deal or something and give them more of a higher average annual value to the contract. You get a player in Jones. Let's see his birthday is August. I say he's thirty three years old. Gonna turn thirty four in August players at that age, and especially center fielders, don't generally age that well when you're talking about. Guys at at that at that age and from a defensive standpoint has kind of eight I think he's he's not a great center fielder anymore. He probably would be better served to be moved off.

The thirty five year old hasn't played in over two years having undergone three surgeries on his back and neck the Mets captain was flanked by a VP job Ricco and met COO. Jeff wilpon, I've had many conversations David. He's told me he wants to end this year on our active roster. Based on his career accomplishments for this franchise and how hard he's worked over the past two years. "James would have been more creative to run with a pitcher and and then save radius save race as a pinch hitter so you're not stuck with all of it coming down to tomas nido when right now certainly the mets catchers or generally black holes of hitters tomasz neto clearly showing just the is not major league it's not a major league bat or at least certainly what we've seen so far which is also why the mets have to get out there at some point and make your trade i think you make a trade for somebody like as i said before a wilson ramos where you're talking about somebody with the tampa bay rays where the salary is so high the if you're the mets you hope they wanna dump the salaries so badly that they're not going to be looking for high end prospects in return the mets don't have enough and and i don't think you can believe enough in this team that you'd wanna be partying with good prospects really good prospects if you're the mets but certainly where it involves salary behave like a big market team go go by wilson ramos or somebody like that to upgrade to catching position because right now the bottom third of the lineup for the mets the bottom it's not even the third there's like four spots in there that are the bermuda triangle right now i mean just everything going in there to die to disappear nothing happens in the bottom that mets lineup and they need to improve that so all right ed from manhattan i see you on hold but coming up after the break speaking of all these mets issues mike puma is going to join me from the nearest post covers the mets we'll see what mike thinks about the bottom half of the mets lineup and how to fix it time for an update with see and laurie those youngins continue to lead the way for the yankees during this impressive streak that they're currently enjoying twenty five year old dominion her montag six no hit innings in his first bigleague start today struck out nine and was only lifted because he hadn't thrown more than sixty one pitches in a game all season he threw eighty four them today and after the fell behind four nothing in.

"Cruise control and eight strikeouts in a row obviously dominating and had great stuff but once he threw twenty nine pitches in the first inning he was never gonna get soup pursue per deep into this game and it was freezing out there so it certain point he just going to have to be lifted anyway so it's pitch count was already getting up there and getting high and we get to the fifth inning the bottom of this and there's two on two out runner on second and third to our and the catcher spot in the order is coming up and it's the it's the rookie just barely called up tomas nido and mickey callaway decides to pinch hit for tomas neo and made it doesn't sound like a big deal he brings in jay bruce off the bench pence pinch hits tomasz neto with the pitcher spot in noah syndergaard coming up next and the problem there is if you're the brewers what do you do the pictures on deck and they're bringing up jay bruce with runners on second and third no one nothing game walk him intentionally right takes about out of his hands load the basis bring the pitcher up dare the mets take syndergaard who very you know pitching really well in this game if you're the brewers to win win they either have to take syndergaard out which he would be happy with or the and that means they're bringing in another pinch hitter and on a day like this you're you're getting guys off their bench so callaway does that he brings in jay bruce where they do they walk him intentionally brings up yard and callaway round of them pinch hitting for syndergaard no one nothing game he lets the pitcher hit syndergaard makes it out of course and of course it's not like he he's not potentially can't hit but it's a pitcher and he ended up in a situation where he leaves syndergaard in there he goes back out with a high pitch count gets one out gives up a base hit and gets pulled and if you're only gonna let him if he was going to be on such a short least you're only going to let him pitch the two batters in the next inning.
