"I could offer by way of analogy, your broadcast partner, Tom Wanna when he got into the profession he's in now. I think it would be the first to tell you Struggled, and I still won't let him conduct the draft. That's for sure. Hey, me. Yeah. No, I wouldn't let you draft from my buyer Bears. Why? Well, barely log on to draft our teams. How are you gonna do that? It's not the process. I mean, you gotta do is zoom draft. No, no, Like the the Like calling the pick in. Maybe I'll need some help with determining what pick it should be of dollars. He'd be in the NFL virtual draft and it would say, Carl model on the fun, but I don't have zoom on my computer. It's too old. He called the Packers and asking them how to log in. He could take a player. You guys make fun. But if he gets a gig like that, we're gonna have to go with him to help him out with the technology. That's the only thing I can offer. I'm all about it. Keep on struggling model will be there to help. We've rode his coattails. This year's line out. Wow. You're living in the penthouse now. Aren't you wanna feel like the outhouse someone? Can you play the Ted Phillips again? If we got the quarterback situation completely, right? No. If we want enough games, no. Everything else is there. That's ah, that shy for sports tweets us. Does she know who I am? No. Well, she returned my class. No. But other than that, we have a great relationship with my girlfriend. Do they have a restraining order against me? Guess yeah, that's all part of it. We're working through it. Yeah, why? I mean, like I don't have we got in the quarterback situation completely, right? No. Have we won enough games? No. Everything else is there. I mean, those 21 years on the job. Two most important criteria for being a winning friends. That's right. That's where your Chicago Bears s o. This is he This song is could go down in history is the best holiday parody song we ever got? It won it then, but it turned out to be way more true than we ever could have imagined. "And then he got tested once before they left for I stopped in Tennessee for driving for his parents, his parents and they I believe one Teo, North Carolina, South Carolina was forget which one he ends up in. And he's going to have to rush to make it back from to beat the sure the Illinois corn is South Carolina. One of the well he was in Tennessee. And then he I believe South Carolina. I would guess so. South Carolina's 13 last port like off the 14 states that yes, yes. Oh, so that's why when I went to the Dells I was happy is the Dells is not what I mean. Wisconsin's happened on their list. Surprisingly, Either. And I was in Ohio and Indiana before that the week before that, because I was there for the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Football Hall of Fame of the Rock Roll Hall of Fame and drove. Yes, I was never had a plane, all that that wasn't my car. So we shall see if Tom wanna letters the studio on Monday because it doesn't go into effect until July 6, which is Basically, they're getting their letting everybody rush back there. They're away for the holiday slide back into the states, you know and get in before that Monday, July 6th deadline. That's that's kind of strange even at itself, and I understand that you have to give notice that is kind of a thought process. There are no there are also this came up earlier in the week because people were talking about the rooftops being open and how that's going to be a possibility, and they'll be able to sell seats on the rooftop. So when the Cubs are playing, I know I saw Jesse talk about this on ESPN yesterday. You know, when the Cubs are playing and something good happens or bad they'll be fans on the rooftops and Jeff Samardzija from the giant says. He expects her to be fans in the stands. I think there's going to be fans in the stands. I think we've seen with these owners. They're not scared of anything, and they're not scared of put anyone at risk if they get the opportunity to, especially that makes that money so There's going to be people in the stands there going to be socially distance and rose apart on DH. That's the way it's going to be. The owners have already said it that that's what they want. Um, you know, but to the fans, as I just want them to be safe, too. And if that means they have to watch us from home, and so be it, and I'll get a suite one game advantage of already doing this before so For one game of the season. I'm gonna have a huge advantage playing in front of no fans before, so I'm excited about that. We'll take full advantage of that. But for the most part more baseball players again another hurdle when you jump over, But in the end, the numbers still count the wins and losses still count. No matter how you got there on either side of town if you didn't like Jeff's a margin, because the way he paged He always had to like him just because of the guy he was, and I always knew he was in studio a couple of 1000 hours, working, talking baseball. He came in studio a couple that's just one of the nicest guys and he's not afraid to say anything. No, This is great, just his eyes assessment of whatever's happening. I'm sure he's not the only baseball player of the things that the owners will do anything for a buck. And then what they would like to get their fans in the stands. Well, especially now, if you think about this with no With no agreement made after the March agreement, so there's no revenue revenue sharing that the owners are on the hook for. Absolutely I do agree with his thought process that Whenever baseball owners are allowed to let people into their stadiums they're going to do so and they're going to do so at the maximum number they're allowed to do so you know, and sure. They're going to say we're gonna take every safety precaution possible. Oh, Ah, And I believe they will, But I think the bigger question would be Are you? Is it in the best interest to allow fans right into the stadium? Even understanding that even though we're taking extra precautions, just the fact that we're gathering and having larger numbers of people in attendance somewhere? Is putting us in the greater risk. If they open the stadiums for a limited number of people say 10% 15% 20% would you goto a game? I got a way that they could actually do it. Which I know baseball would never take my advice. But we'll talk about that. We come back ESPN.

"That's what makes this kind of crazy is like. Where is he going to go? Wish I know I wish I I. I hope I hope it works out for him. I would hate for him to go somewhere. And then for it to suck. And just kind of ruin his legacy. Nagy's your guy and I like him too he is. He is thinking that a few new staff members are going to be enough to turn things around. Is that going to be enough do you? Do you think they have the right stuff? There in just need to shove trubisky in the correct direction I think the staff members he was it was through listening through it but being next to him and talking about it evident how excited he is to have laser and Johnny Filipo Bill Laser in John D football in the building and he can kind of take a step back. Let them got. Let those guys coach Mitch and take it from there. I think the big picture question is and this is not his fault. He didn't draft. The player is Mitch. Good enough because he had nagy coaching them. The Nagy take step back now. He is John De Filippo's coach Carson Wentz. Here's bill laser whose coast different players and had success. He's at guys. That have had success coaching quarterbacks. Johnny football just goes garment you I think he won offensive rookie week like six times. So if Mitch if you can get more out of them we're GONNA find out if there's a chance. Mitch isn't sometimes at the highest level. You're just not good enough. I would lean that way though clearly. I'm bias I want now. You Have Success I. I'm just kind of a Suto bears fan now. I'm rooting for the bears. And maybe their defense gets back to really dominating again. They draft a tight end or sign a COUPLA offensive guys and kind of get some momentum that way but we'll see there is. There is a ton of pressure on Bisky. Now here's the pasta. The Lion Stink. They are not good the vikings loss Everson Griffen. There's a chance that they trade digs. They just might not be as good. Next year their margin fares Harrison's missy you're older hunters a year older to some of their prime geysers a little older. Their feelings banged up a lot. Their offensive line's stinks and the packers. We'll see I mean they could if they nail wide receiver and nail tight end could be really good or they could just be a little bit smoke and mirrors last year and be more like a nine ten win team so that division actually might come back to the bears a little bit if Mitch. Kind of get rolling again to be a double digit win team to win the division like they did two years ago so I actually think that division has a lot more questions than it does answers which is a good thing for the bears and Mitch. But there's a simple reality if Mitch plays like he does last year they got shot and they're just going to be a middle level team and that's that's based on the defense being good. If the defense isn't good they'd win five or six games. If Mitch is good. He's never going to live up to being the number two overall pick. I think is fair to say but if he is just a solid starter then they can win eleven games. It's just it just comes down to that. What if the cowboys let walk? Trade UP TO GET Jordan. Love then signed Brady. For two years they could then franchise cooper it would take a lot to trade up but if they could make it happen. This would shake the League and plant a solid foundation for the cowboys. Also love the PODCASTS. Keep doing what you're doing. I don't hate this idea. I am all for this idea now. The cowboys WHO MISSED THE PLAYOFFS. Or drafting what? Eighteen twenty somewhere in there like the last team to miss the playoffs. It would probably take them to get Jordan. Love a couple I you know. There's this pick a second rounder and first rounder. But if they got Brady they keep Amari. They have a pretty good base their right to hit the ground. Running one hundred percent agree would shake up. The League would be fun. I'm all for that scenario. For that. Scenario to work one they would have to be willing to put on back which doesn't seem like they are going to do to. Brady would have to pick them. So I guess the first thing Brady would have to say. Hey Jerry and Hey Mike McCarthy I want in which if he did I think they would listen then to would they punt back for him. How much would he cost so there is a variable out of their control? The most important variable for this. Would Tom WanNa go there if Tom did then who knows that'd be fun? That would be really fun. Appreciate everyone listen. Have a great weekend three now. "The rock someone's gotta throw them the fade in the red zone. But brand put up those numbers in Denver, put up those numbers elsewhere, Brandon put a big York, so, you know, you look at that, and you say, okay, you know there's a lot of debate there understand understandable. So we have jail little bit higher on our list, but not much higher. That's a little cheese for you surprised refrigerator Perry. And Curtis Conway did not make the top one hundred. I will tell you that the fridge is on our list. Curtis Conway isn't, you know you get down to the bottom of that list. And, and it's, it's very hard, leaving somebody's guys off you say, well, you know, some of these guys spent a lot of teams that they play for, and, and who they were and one of the things that was difficult for us also is, is the current players. Right. And how do you how do you rate, a wheel Mack, who is obviously great and maybe ten years from now is going to be in the top fifteen of that list, there's only for one year with him. What do you do that Jackson? What do you do at the cow along was, obviously, you know, put together a pretty good career here? And you know, those are hard decisions to make when when guys are still playing. And so, yeah, I it's, it's a major challenge. And I, I love the discussion that sparks, I also think that anyone who has made your outcry against any of the rankings either that, that we do or what the end Don did try to do the exercise yourself. Then five our strategy put together to south one hundred from one to one hundred and. And get a great appreciation for just how difficult that. Okay. So how did you guys compare eras? Like I mean, I get comparing guy played in the nineties to guy played in two thousand we can look at pro bowls, we can look at tackles. What whatever? But how did you how did you do when you're comparing guys to in the thirties forties, fifties to present day? So we'll learn on our staff did a remarkable job of setting us up really was kind of amend to put together, a formula that took in all pro's, pro bowls, championships, one winning percentage of teams around and it gave us a formula. You know, a metric to kind of used as, as a little bit of a tiebreaker in some cases in a little bit part discussion in some ways, when it comes down to it all of a sudden, you know, your names on his list, what do you remember about beating feathers and Yuki Miller? Right. It's hard to say so that you kinda just have to to, you know, go by feel on some of this and piece together. And again, you know, realize that, you know, the difference between fifty three and eighty is very slim and it's gonna create discussion but, but, you know, let's understand what this is. And I'm the whole, you know, enjoy the debate. Enjoy the discussion and also appreciate that very few franchises in football can have a list that goes from one to one hundred and create this kind of historical sort of memory lane to fit to stroll down in. It's been really fun. And I have been engaged at all we just love and then we appreciate the time as let you go. Make sure you correct one flaw. This listed not have Tom wanna belongs on that list. Tummy's not about our list either. I, I hate to. Out there. But. And oversight. And I'm with Chris Devin Hester does not belong to be in the top twenty for me. Danny has him, right. Where I think, Danny said where he should be hunting, Pat agrees with that. No. I think he's twenty twenties little high, but I can see with the impact he made and you can point even though it was a great defense though. Six return touchdowns. Worrying one score games by large. Most of them he won them games. Handedly with a great. Not in our top twenty but he isn't our top thirty. And I would just tell you that he is going to the hall of fame and actually had a chance. And when you sort of stop and remember his career for what it was. I mean it's ridiculous. The energy surge that having him back for returns through building put through a bears team, put through in Ponant you know where where they've got that executive? Oh man. What are we going to do with this guy? Guys going to be in the hall of fame and just have to stop them. Remember, it's not just the twenty return touchdowns. I I've seen eleven yard punt returns from Devin Hester that are unlike anything I've ever seen in my life, you know. And so if you wanna just have fun and go back and watch the non touchdown returns, just remember health, right. Women everybody's doing and that should remind you the emotions that he created our years comes out Lynn. So we're starting next week, it Wednesday, number one hundred Manley. In the Sunday Tribune, we'll have a nice feature Manley's. You're one hundred two. Great. At their paper when you were taking this exam. Not at all. Not at all. That's fun. Interesting that came out that way really surprised by that. I lot of ways again as a story, and I wrote on Pat Manley in the Sunday Tribune of kick off with all really be about six months for us of, of a lot of bears. One hundred coverage and retrospectives enlists and look back. I it's a lot of fun to, to sort of revisit say fridge is on your list, right? Yes. Yes. Okay. Have a great day man often guys. We'll see Dan Wieder Scotto Tribune gotta take a time out. That's crazy. They both had the exact same one hundred. Yeah. I'm not debating whether Patrick blogs in there. I think he does. But we just talked about how crazy this is you basically put some of these names in a hat and just draw out and they both have Manley at one hundred. There you go. All right. Quick time out. We'll be right back. Pat has some kudos to give to the cubs front office next. ESPN.

He is Tom Ricketts. He's been on his show many times, Tom good morning. How are you today? I'm Greg cap. How're you? Everything is good. I know the club is mired in a little bit of difficulty. What is your takeaway? From this slow start. Well, the obviously we didn't get out of the gate very very effectively. Here we blew a few leads in Texas and didn't play that great in Atlanta or walkie either. But look it's a long season. I think we have the right people. We have the right people on the field and the right people off the field. If we have to make some personnel adjustments on the team I would trust yet. And I would trust the oh to to to make the right decisions there. And and I trust you. He's one of the best managers in the game. And I think that if we get him get him the right players who put them in the right situation to get us on track. So you know, you'd rather not start to and seven. That's that goes without saying. But you know, I think we've got the right club. And we'll we'll get back on track. Tom is you know as everybody looks in the in the off season. He ended his season. There's a lot of big names out there. They're demanding a lot of money. That's understood. But I think is cubs fans. And and you know in the last few years with the success they've been hungry for more rightfully so. And also of what's happened already. But the comments that were made in the offseason from you had people confuse when you said the cubs in spending the offseason because we don't have anymore. A little bit more light on that for us. Yeah. Well, first of all that's not what I said. It was a question was why didn't you sign Bryce Harper because we don't have enough money. We're out of money. Like, the fact is we have the we we have by far the highest baseball budget. We've ever had here. We have one of the cop couple budgets in all of baseball. So it's not like there isn't money being spent. I think Secondly, you know, a lot of the free agents that are bigger name for agents out there. Obviously we're asking for. Double digit year contracts and thirty million bucks a year. Whatever it is. You know, we looked at. We looked at them as they were coming up in the last few years and said, well, let's let's let's focus. Elsewhere. That's you know, we we like the club. We have let's not save put aside money to to get one of the biggest free agents this year. Let's let's keep putting our money to work. That's that's sign other guys. And it wasn't like we didn't do anything this season. Obviously we picked up hamels contract and discount zone. If you others. So like, you know, we have a lot of resources we've committed those resources the players we we like and trust. And we think we're we're a good club. And we'll win our division. And I mean, I'd be great to every single year be able to add three hundred million dollar player. But you know, she's not going to happen. It's just even if we even if we wanted some of these guys this off season it just can't happen every year. Hey, hey, Tom. It's great to talk to you. I just wanted to ask them in talking. About getting off to a good start. And in John Lewis. You're talking about the you know, guys are feeling pressure. Do you do you feel the pressure? Not only is being the chairman and in in in making the decisions off the field. But do you feel that as well of of what's kind of taking place here where the mandate was, you know, we need to you know, we need that that mindset from October early in the March and in April, and now all of a sudden it hasn't gone that way. Is there that pressure both on the field and off the field from the chair that you said, yeah. Well, you feel it somewhat obviously. Because you don't want to you don't wanna get off the two slowest start and dig yourself to a whole, but you also have to keep in mind it's a hundred and sixty two game season. And we're came ten so, and you also have to keep in mind. There's a lot of mean reversion in overtime in baseball. You know players once they perform up to their level. We should have a team that is competing for our division. So it's tough emotionally. Early to not overweight, these first few games and and read too much into them. And I feel that too. I feel that I feel that emotionally. But intellectually, you know, like, let's let's just focus on the big picture. We have a good club. Let's let's run out some of these problems in the bullpen. Let's let our guys get comfortable. And let them do what they can do. And I think over the course of the season they'll they'll perform, and we'll be there at the end. I was there in Milwaukee on Saturday. And I was there when THEO spoke to the media, and he said first of all this is not a Tommy hot of thing. He said are pitching coach is brand new. This has nothing to do. With him are struggles in the bullpen and the rotation to this is not a resource issue. I've heard Tom getting criticized for not spending three if you wanna talk about allocation of resources, that's me and put it on me. And I'm fine with that. When you hear your team, president talk about allocation of resources, and it's no secret Darvish. Moral chat would have not been the best signings of cubs of Maine, the long time. What is your response when you hear a comment like that from your guy? Well, we're all on the same page. I mean, we all we all were all in the same team where rowing together. I don't think it does anyone any good to try to point fingers or to assign, you know, sign responsibility. Like the fact is that we all wanna win. We're all doing every decision. They every decision we make about winning. We're all trying to do our best to to keep a championship club going, and yeah, I like rock jazz slow start. Let's let's see I trust the guys that we have to adjust to what we've learned about our team over the first week and and get us back in contention. You know, as you look time, again, we we all come to sport we understand that it's very early on in the season. But for the fans out there who are projecting that any we knew there's going to be issues with the bullpen. And that's where we sit today. What would you say to the fans in regards to letting this thing play out? Well, yeah, I would say to them. What how you know, tell them how I feel which is we have smart people. They they know what they have to do. I think we'll be able to get all this Russell to the ground and make a great season. I don't think that you want to like I said overreact to the games that, you know, the the first few games, but but you do wanna make adjustments that I think we've started to make some adjustments and we'll get our groove. And and over the course of one hundred sixty two I think we'll be right there in terms of revenue your two hundred ten million. There's only two teams in baseball over two hundred you and the Boston Red Sox have both have gotten off to really rough starts there. Three and eight you're sitting at two and seven, but when you look at the renovations, which cost close to a billion dollars has that combined with starting at TV network combined with where your payroll is has that had some affect on ability. If you wanted to go and spend. More money or has no effect. No, no effect. I mean, we we've the the good news about the renovation dollars. We've spent most of it just goes to steal concrete, electrical, plumbing and stuff that you need to just to keep the park from tipping over. But the, but a lot of it went to places where we can generate incremental revenue and and over time that will just generate more resources for the for the for the team put more money on the field. But really Kappa kind of goes back to what you said in the first half of the question like it's not really about how much money you spend like it's about how your players are playing. And and you look at teams that have much smaller budgets, what's younger clubs. You know? They're off to good starts. There's you know, there's teams that are often pretty good start said that don't have like the big dollar resources. So the correlation between how much you spend how much you win is not as high as you'd like it from from. Big market clubs perspective. And in the end. We we have the ability to put a good team on the field every year. I think our guys are as good as anyone at constructing teams, and we have a great manager and all that should play out over the course of the entire season gets here on ESPN one thousand we're in the first midwest Bank studio, so feel jed came to you. It's July the club is in the race. And said, hey, Tom, we need to make this move. We can get this guy. Here's what it's gonna cost is their money in the budget to add on before the deadline, and there's only one deadline now there is no waiver deals in August anymore. Yeah. I mean, we always keep there's always little flecks in the budget for midseason. But, but you know, I mean, it's you know, we'll have to cross that bridge when we get there. Tom wanna ask you about Joe, man? The guy who I'm very high on a no people are incredibly splitting the city, which blows my mind, given what he's a chief here in Chicago up speaking to the scrutiny in a job that you think he has done also curious why there wasn't a decision to potentially extend him. Where do you stand with? Joe man, his performances cubs manager. Well, I think Joe is one of the best pitchers in the game. I think he's proven that year in year out here. I mean, you look at you just look at the track record of what he's what he's produced. You know, I think that that backs it up and even even go go back and look at some of the great things he did with with Tampa teams. You know, obviously, we're a different makeup a lot of younger players. He's one of the best managers, you know with. Respect to his contract. That's all between the baseball guys. That's all that's all in the court of the O J in and and they'll do the right thing on, you know, when when they make their decision on what's you know, what what the future looks like. But but does a great manager. He's proven it over and over again. And I'm sure she'll get us back on track here. So there is a perception out there after you spoke at spring training. Whether it's a right perception or not sometimes perception becomes reality..

"It wasn't until the night circuit decided once again, the ninth circuit in contrast to every other circuit in the country. They decided reinterpret the law to say no relief from a prisoner jail. Nice clothes and finds them they're required. During work got straight out, gentlemen. Our custody wouldn't have got the ninth circuit overturned. The supreme court said no won't go back the way, it should be supposed to be this isn't just for every criminal aliens. This is specified typo criminal and aggravated felonies. We're talking about people convicted of serious crimes rape, murder armed robbery sexual assault. These people shouldn't be free walk in our communities. Anyway, he's number one during the country illegally and number two public safety threat of the ninth circuit ruled on this. Putting this in context now who's in the ninth circuit, California, Oregon state of Washington all heavy sanctuary states. These states were criminal ends are released to the public criminals public safety threats rather than turning them over to ice. So this decision was devastating in these states and made it much more dangerous four communities, but for ice officers who got custody in jail, but now because the sanctuary city policies that's mocha each people in their community and their homes on their tour where they have access to who knows what weapons this is a huge win for the men and women of is it keeps them safer. There's Tom home and weighing in on what I told you about yesterday's court saying, no no rule of law. Still matters when it comes to Gratien, you don't get to just rewrite it ninth circuit court of appeals because you prefer a different outcome. That's not how the laws supposed to work. So it's a win as I said. And it's Tom says, and I always like to check in with Tom wanna see him over it at Fox News. We exchanged thoughts on immigration. I'm looking forward to getting a whole lot of time on the ground in El Paso next week. I'm gonna be right there in the midst of all this. Craziness at the border because while we did get a victory from the supreme court in terms of immigration enforcement rule of law. The system is overwhelmed, and it's about to burst. It's it's just in a free fall right now. This is from the Wall Street Journal today. The Trump administration plans to start pulling back on a controversial plank of US immigration policy in a busy border region. Saying Tuesday, it will stop sending some migrant families who are legally crossed the border in Texas's Rio Grande valley to jail. Rio grande. Do we say Rio Grande Rio Grande day my bed Rio Grande, which one is it? Anybody bueller? Brandon. Mike what we say we say. This is America the Rio Grande Saint Louis or Saint Louis. Sure that over in Texas, who's listening? This is like buck. You're such a city slicker get get it together. Well, I'll know next week. I'll be down there in the valley of the grand river. Anyway, starting this week hundreds of families caught each day in that area are being released by border patrol agents instead of being handed over to immigration and customs enforcement for potentially longer detention. Exact numbers will depend on how many there's room for an ice detention facilities, which have filled up. As a record volume of families are crossing the border officials said they're making the change because of crowding and safety concerns and quote, guys. This is overwhelming the system that is what is going on here. That is explicitly and clearly what is happening. They are over well-meaning the system this is intentional. This is a strategy. They know that they're because the word gets out. I mean, look I'm reading it out of one of the biggest newspapers in the country. The word is out it travels, very fast online, and you have these different not just within the migrant groups themselves, but you have different communities of activists and legal aid teams that all they want to do is find ways to make sure that illegal aliens can stay in America. Forever. And anyone who shows up is an illegal will stay as long as as as he or she wants to that that is their purpose and border patrol is is at a point now where they're just saying look we can't continue to even hold them on a short term basis down in Texas because we don't have the facilities for them. We just don't we're not. We're not able to do it. They have clearly overwhelmed this system, and you know, I've been saying this was going to happen. It's been in the process of happening now here, we are where it could not be any more obvious that the system is that is that a breaking point and do Democrats have anything do they have any solutions for this? No because they're on board for this. They are in favor of the current situation. In fact. Here. Here's a. Here's the Jill brand just giving away that the plan here the democrat plan, and this is the plan to destroy the Republican party because we'll never be able to compete in another election if they get away with this the democrat planets to legalize and then and then. Register for benefits and then registered to vote all legal in the country. This is this is Kirsten gillibrand when she's not lifting her eight pound weights with a with a t shirt on you see that today. She was trying to do the whole. I'm hip look at me do social media. "My dad on the little brief interruption there. But we have returned. Roll with Mike Hansen. Who is joining us today. We appreciate his time. So so very much again, the context is cost of living in Hawaii one of the main main presences that we have. Regulatory issues taxation. But also what is called the Jones. We appreciate again all of your time with us today. Mike, please feel free to jump in where it is necessary from where we left off. Right. You were talking about the national security argument for the Jones act and where. Well, you know, how true that is. There are three aspects of that that needs to be looked at independently to see how relevant those those arguments are today. The first one is sealift, and that's the capacity of of the US. To move men and materiel to war zones. Got up by seat and. The. That's now done by two different. Fleets of ships. One is the US flag foreign trade fleet. Which is made up of privately owned ships. That are all foreign built US flag and not eligible for the coast-wise trade. I either not Jones act ships. And the second group is the ready reserve fleet, which is the government owned fleet and about half of those ships are foreign built. So that basically those two groups of ships are not eligible for coast wise trading. The second category is shipbuilding industrial base. And that has to do with the ability of the US to build ships in time of war as was done in World War One and also in World War Two with the World War Two with a liberty ships, the t two tankers and all of that. The problem with that issue with that argument is that the shipbuilding capacity of the United States to build ocean. Going ships is now down to six yards three of which built only for the US military. To that build only commercial vessels and one yard that actually bills. Both ships for commercial and military. See NASCAR yard in San Diego. Where mess is currently building to Conroe ships for the way trade and the third aspect is what's known as the mariner pool that is having enough trained and experienced Mariners available to man, the sealift ships in time of war and. The one of the problems with that regard in the in terms of the Jones act or cabbages trays is that most of the cabbage trades involve tugs and barges of one kind or another or work boats, and those guys are not necessarily license to work on the largest ships. That are typically used for purposes. So the arguments in terms of the need for the Jones act in terms of national security at this point in time are very weak. Talking with Mike Hansen and continuing with our discussion regarding the Jones act, and more importantly, the impact to us. Your Tom wanna share? This opening statement, Mike, the Jones act prevents foreign flagged ships from carrying cargo between the US mainland and certain non contiguous parts of the US such as Puerto Rico, Hawaii Alaska. On foreign ships inbound with goods cannot stop at any of these four locations offload goods, load mainland bound goods and continue to US mainland ports. Now just that sentence or combination alone. Is it true that that really is at the heart of what affects us the most regarding the Jones act. Oh, no. There's parts of that statement. That are true. In fact, the. Foreign flag ships can arrive to. Any one of the non-contiguous? Jurisdictions to the United States and discharge cargo from foreign and actually load cargo for foreign what the ship cannot do the foreign ship that is is carry cargo from one of the non contiguous jurisdictions to another to the US mainland. Or to another non contiguous jurisdiction that happens to be embraced by the so-called, coast wise laws of the United States. So for example, from all white Alaska. There's a common misconception that somehow foreign ships cannot arrive to one of the non-contiguous jurisdictions and discharge foreign cargo. That's simply not true. There's another notion out there that a foreign ship. If it arrives to a non-contiguous jurisdiction and discharges cargo. It must return foreign somehow, and it can't go onto other US sports. That's not true. Either. Foreign flagship can make a large number of port calls in the United States and transit cargo at each one of those ports, but it must only discharge foreign cargo or load cargo for export to a foreign country. It can't carry cargo from one domestic port to another. So it seems that an exemption would be a less difficult proposition than the repeal of the Jones act does that an accurate. There. There's a number of the problem with the Jones act for especially the non-contiguous jurisdictions which rely upon. Surface transportation by water is that typically costs around five times as much to build an oceangoing ship in the United States as it does for example in South Korea between Japan, South Korea, and China, they're currently building some something north of ninety five percent of all the seagoing ships in the world today. And they're the they're the low low cost providers and the United States can't compete where were five times the cost on the ship operating side, not the capital side. But the operating side US ships are something on the order of about two point seven times more expensive than the to operate largely because of the crew costs and those societas things. Gonna flag of convenience vessel or an open registry vessel of the kind that do most of the world's trading today. And so that's that's what we're facing. In addition wurley building in the United States, three kinds of of of commercial ships product tankers container ships and crude oil tankers. So we're we're we're lead. They're very limited number of size ranges. So we're looking at various a very limited portfolio of kinds of ships. That are even a vailable if you had the money to purchase them, right? And so it makes it makes transportation in the non-contiguous jurisdictions quite expensive. And it limits. The kinds of transportation that are available in terms of trying to reform this situation. There are two approaches we have to be briefed because we're running out of time. But please walk us through. What is is? What's called and either all international trade issues defined this way by the US International Trade Commission, and also by the World Trade Organization, which are highly involved in US, maritime restrictions. I one is the merchandise trade issue that is can you import a foreign built Fessel into the United States for domestic transportation. If you could do that, then US ship operators would be on the same level as other operators around the world who can purchase a ship from a major builder in a foreign country. The US is one of maybe two or three countries in the world that actually has what's known as a domestic Bill requirement as part of their cabotage loss. So this is you know, one out of one hundred and sixty countries in the three three or four hundred and sixty countries in the world. And none of the other countries are major countries. I mean, we're talking Egypt and Peru, and Nigeria, you know, this is just. The other side. It's what's known as the services side and whether or not foreign flag ships would be allowed to carry a domestic cargoes. That's okay. That's the more difficult approach. Our approach is to allow the use of foreign built ships under US flag operating in the domestic in the non-contiguous domestic trades of the United States dodger hold on tight final break. When we come back, Mike. We gotta go through the financial impact of the Jones act in its current state. Current form to the economy of Hawaii. And that's what we will cover next for the.

"On golf Saturday morning, and we are within Bellas out. Waterproof week out. I don't wanna be the one to stay. The. Gonna say, well, we need the rain. No opposite. I'm not gonna say. About. Okay. Tom Spencer joins us. Good morning, Tom. How are you? I'm doing well. But I must say our hearts, sterling go out to all those affected by this. I mean, horrible situation the Russian river Guerneville everywhere humble county lawful to see those images and hope that that rain stops pretty soon, they're met. So we can get some people dried out up there. Absolutely. Well, put Tom I mean, we've just gone through some devastation here in northern California in the last couple of years that it's darn near biblical. And you know, our hearts go out to to all those people as well. Let's was well said I shudder native to the area. Right, john. I mean, this is something that we we haven't seen a likes Mitch points out all the extremes that you say to see it. Well, you know, the people are so resilient. I was amazed. Watching the news a little bit early last night that the the town of Guerneville which had been under like four feet of water couple of days ago. The downtown was operating already, and then people were driving the streets, and they go on the stores and the Safeway was operating which was a big deal because it had not been flooded. So it's it's pretty pretty amazing. I'm sure I'm sure northwood golf course up there parts of that were underwater, and we're going to have valve Hyun sun from Petaluma, and the sonoma's stay golf team will we'll get a little update from him on the area. But Sebastian pools heavily hit heels Berg, and you know, the golf industry has really been hit hard and Mitch night talked off air last week. About some horses that we have good relationships with that have started the year. Just just you know, horrible now on the other side, you know, they've had other winters lately when we've been in these droughts where you know, they end up with with lots of revenue in the winter. But this is more kind of more closer to what to normal normal is anyway, Tom, I know you have a couple of weeks off before the bastards, and I always liked to quiz you on your knowledge of people like Adam seven seven who is tied for fourth Kwan, hone Lee. We got Danny Lee, we've got sun A m leading Keith Mitchell. But but you're probably just sitting back on the couch watching this stuff instead of having to do your homework. Tied for fourth. But some unique games up there at the Honda Classic. Well, they are and and we actually covered the Honda last year was a one off situation for CBS due to the Olympics. And we had a great time down there. It's a it's an unbelievable golf course. And and it's tough. I kept actually said at the other day, he compared it to major championship conditions, which is a big compliment, and they have had major. They actually had a PGA back in the late eighties was so hot hottest majors ever contested. When you factored in temperature and humidity, and you might remember Larry Nelson won in a playoff Orlando Watkins. So you're kind of Seguin here from west coast golf to now. Southern Florida Florida's swing open. It's it's different conditions. Normally a lot of wind. Although it's been a great week in Florida so far with temperatures in the eighties, and it's just ideal. If you're trying to get your game in shape, but then there's the you got you got water all over. Golf course. It can just really put it this week. It can ruin your confidence. Yeah. I think it was Fowler. That said a few bad swings at the Honda and all of a sudden games Iraq for for an entire month. John, and that kind of show you even at this level. The guys are pretty fragile because as you point out the masters is looming and you don't want to have a bad week here. We're all of a sudden we start questioning your swing? This is about the time of the year where you wanna feel like things are clicking and you want maintenance and hopefully a trend upwards, so your games peaking for for the masters. Yeah. And you've also got, you know, a lot of talk now about guys playing different schedules. You know, tiger had a some comments about four tournaments close to the time within his backyard, and he only play in three of them because of the time the the schedule changes and with the the Players Championship in March. And then right into April with the masters, so kind of a kind of a different time different change for these guys to kinda manipulate their calendar. Yeah. And it's true, and everyone sort of assumes. And we mentioned KEPCO we mentioned Fowler. Justin Thomas tiger. These guys all live within ten miles or less of of the venue this week PGA national now, you would say this is a guy that'd be a week. You wanna play? But in truth, it's probably a little more complicated. Granted you get home every night, and you have a quick meal. But like if you're Justin Thomas, I watched a little bit of Thursday, and he had a badge finish Laden is around. He had a double on the fifteenth hole the infamous bear trap there. The three-hole stretch. The started the started at the bear trap. He dumped it in the in the in the pond and bogey the next door. So he goes home with a bitter taste in his mouth. He's gotta be up the next day roll out of bed beyond the chorus grind and make the cut barely makes it then he had to play early today already. I think play nine holes, John if you're you're checking the leaderboard, so it's not like it's been this sort of like. Coast coast week where you just sort of putting your feet up. I mean, you're you're driving back and forth everyday. Sometimes it's better to be a hotel that's five minutes away and just kind of order room service every night. I guess what you guys do. But my point being it's not always easy to be at home. There's a lot of expectations a lot of. And certain players just decide I don't want to deal with it. So as you point out the schedule and the rules are going to be the dominant topics of conversation this year. I think we got to get to the end of the year and evaluated at that point. And then if there's changes that need to be made, hopefully, the tour and the rock the governing bodies, the low world makes them alterations. Hey, Tom, you mentioned the switch from the west coast to the east coast swing. What what are the biggest adjustments that the players have to make as it's simply a matter of poetic greens or time difference, sir? What are some of the things they have to adjust to when they make that switch. It's a good question. Number one to me would be just climate change. Midshow? You're going from heavy coastal air, generally, west coast, golf Pebble Beach, San Diego, Torrey, Pines, L, A Riviera all three of those venues or either touching the ocean or within a mile. So you've got the coastal element that we all know, very, well what you have to deal with in the winter. Time. So you segue here they say now, you're playing golf in the mid eighties. So a club you're hitting one hundred sixty five yards two weeks ago. Now, you might be hitting hundred and eighty five yards. So you have to make those adjustments. Obviously last week they were at altitude in Mexico City, a whole 'nother dynamic and probably the main thing, although this has changed through the years and John can probably touch on this as well as the green services going from Benz or PO Anna if you're a west coast player or thrive on the west coast to Bermuda is a big big change Tom watching never one on the regular tour. Now, he's a midwesterner went to Gaul, but went to college at Stanford. But Tom wanna a lot of his golf on the west coast? Let's say I mean, he wanna everywhere, but, but he was more predominant on the west coast, and he got to Florida and he didn't win at all. So I mean, the grain was such a big element on these greens back in the day. John nowadays are so uniformly. Good. I'm not sure it's a big deal at the tour level for the average. Player to come to Florida. If you're from the west coast to me, the greens have always been the most complicated element. Yeah. And you know, it's it's kind of interesting I hadn't ever thought of this. When you bring this up, but you know, this what is it called important express? It. The guys are using were they they get their feet position on each side of the line to feel the gravity of their body. You know, which way the greens gonna break but on Bermuda. You could have a straight putt because of the elevator or undulation of the green. But because of the grain direction you may have to play a four foot or on the left edge. So I wonder if import has like a eight point two point zero would they moved to Florida. Again, the the grass so interesting there. Hey, I wanted to talk about the winners last week. And we'll talk about the the small win. The unimportant win, Dustin Johnson. He wins in Mexico. Another twentieth win. Sure, he'll go onto the hall of fame and all that. But Martin trainer winner of the two thousand eight San Francisco city golf championship goes on to win in Puerto Rico with a great final round. That's a huge win for him two and a half years of of exemption gets him into all basically all the tournaments except the masters a huge win for Martin trainer. Living in San Francisco. Now, tom. That is great. I'm glad you brought that up. I was so happy to see that. And and I I don't know Martin. Well, but I I think I mentioned and if I hadn't have tell me to move on. But I did play a practice round with him about. Let's see two thousand eight for a qualifier down pasta cheapo played eighteen holes with them, and that his mom and is a delightful young guy at that time. And and now he's sort of just persevered, and he's got a great sort of humble quality to himself. Yeah. He he won late twice late last year on the web dot com. Sorta come from. Let's call it national obscurity to all of a sudden, here's a guy you gotta watch out for and then he goes down last week and just hangs around the leaderboard and has a great final round. And I I didn't see I didn't see any of it. But I saw his winning Potman. Just you got a great reaction. Yeah. It was like a just a humble, you know, stuck his hand in the air with the the number one sign like kind of like a relief. But also like, yeah, I deserve. And but it wasn't like boasting matched. You know? It's just a great reaction. And and you can listen to comment. He's got an unbelievable perspective speaking devastation. We started the segment off talking about resiliency northern California through all these incredible situations. The last few years how about what Puerto Rico has been through and Martin had the president of mind mentioned all the people down there and what they've gone through in his victory speech last week. So here's a guy that really has perspective. And maybe most importantly a lot of talent. So we'll be following him this year and look forward to covering his career, Tom you mentioned that you played a practice round with them passive Tampa. Do you care to reveal what you shot that day? Well, I it whatever I shot. It helped me I it was the US open qualifier in that. I think I advanced to the sectional the nice the next day. So and I think he's Martin did too. I have to go and check it out. Now, our paths our careers went in different directions from that moment forward. But it was one day where I I actually played the game at a at a fairly good level. Well, and we've had a couple of calls in to associates of of Martin trainer. We're trying to get them on the show. Eight eight can be our Martin. If you're if you're back, unfortunately missed the cut yesterday. I also want to give a plug caddy really nice young man Olympic club member. Also played the South American tour, Matt Garcia big tall long hitter. Good player and Matt's been caddying for Martin so go into to to Matt helping Martin get through all of that. So good stuff there. So Tom it's now where we're going to say we need to have your move along because we need to jump belong here. But but. Great stuff. And we will we will talk about the masters more coming up we're going to we're going to get Donna Archer on and a couple of weeks. This is a fiftieth anniversary of George winning the masters. As well as the AT and T in the same year. So we're going to talk about that the next couple of weeks a little bit. So I want you guys to remind me of that. I will do my best not to forget the week of Augusta. So that that Mr. Archer gets a good pop at some point during our four days of coverage that needs to be mentioned and Donal be there on site. And I'll I'll connect you guys a little bit. So all right. Do we wanna make our picks now? Go right ahead. No, no. I was I was gonna be you can you can Bank. My pee. I'm gonna stay right now. Mitch Brooks Kapka in my pick. And I'm not changing between now and April. How about you enough Charles? How Charles how he's in. There. We go. I picked him. What he wasn't in it. I got to pick him when he's in it right through. The last I'll take Tiger Woods. Mark it down ten thousand dollar bet at one of the casinos yesterday on on tiger winning the masters real ten thousand ten thousand the odds are, but that's wow. It's pretty lost these twelve to one if you're scoring at home twelve to one I see. Once again, I'm Tom I didn't know you're that big a better. Not. Since he was plastered over every headline this week. He couldn't help. But see it. I mean to deal. All right. Tom spencer. Thank you so much have a good rest of the weekend. Thanks telemann. There is Tom Spencer. Great stuff. He's always wonderful. And I say this about five times year best part of the show. Yeah. No, absolutely. Awesome. Eight hundred km Byard. "All mobile live. Let's all be on the right side of history. Make the mall toys between love is. Hey, let's do the right thing. A nod from his other movie. No, nothing. Okay. Do the right thing. That's one where there's the stormy. It's. Yeah. That's the one. It's it's really hot. And there's a store. Okay. Bradley Cooper last night to comment on that. Do you wanna talk about what he said about the president and other people also made their acceptance speeches political which we often say, yes. I I don't. Spike, Lee, get seven opinion. I don't know a thing about him. So it'd be unfair for me to comment that I don't look at the president's tweets. So it'd be unfair for me to comment twenty twenty elections hate versus love. Okay. Got Bradley Cooper. Now this I'm interested in because I like, Bradley Cooper, don't them. I guess I liked the movie he made I only know one thing about him. I've seen him. What was the movie he made lone survivor? No, no, American sniper. I thought he did a very good job in American sniper. Then I read that he took some business lessons from Clint Eastwood. Clint Eastwood said look you need to get in and get into producing. So he said to Eastwood I liked that he recognized the elders. And in the case of Eastwood, a guy who's made a huge like a not just filmmaking as an actor. But as a business, I like the fact that he had the wisdom to do that. No what he didn't know and to reach out to Clint Eastwood. Now, I see I know the entertainment business. I know it I like the fact that he put lady Gaga and his first directorial debut knowing she would below him out of the water as a singer. And I like that to pay with it. I don't know thing about Gaga there's some of her songs and that he took a chance on her the last night. And no that's not the way really that worked except this was her acting debut last night at the awards show at the Oscars. They saying shallow from their movie stars, which is a remake. But they film the whole thing from the back. So let me explain this. They're on the stage, and you see Bradley Cooper and lady Gaga. And as the camera kind of moved around the Oscar audience was kind. The backdrop people said the chemistry between those two seem so real. So were their faces on the screener their cases were on the screen, but it's just the from the audience they were together like looking at each other. So it seems so like, oh, and she she's broke up from her fiance. Couple days ago. Cuddling on the piano bench. She leans his head. So I'm sold. I'm sold. I liked wife was there. Was there? Correct. Not his wife is partner for a long time. But it doesn't matter. The point is always there actually good actors monkey you see the movie the stars born not yet I've seen. Well, I've seen the other two. Yeah. The original Judy Garland version, and then the Barbra Streisand version. Yeah, I like the Barbra Streisand person, you guys are gonna freak. You know what I saw? I saw Roma. Oh was that good? It was just nominal films. I've ever seen and it was weird experience because I asked Tom wanna us on for both of you guys. I asked him explain any wire liked it because I was really kind of freaked out that I liked I loved it. I wanna watch it again. I want to give more thought to what it means. And they're speaking in rhapsody, which I will eventually see when I don't have to pay for it. So it one four of these Oscars for what a lot of different awards, but everyone was talking about this best actor being prominent ramming the everyone was talking about the intro because it was Mike Myers from starting in car from Saturday Night Live who did who Wayne and Garth from Wayne's world, which made the song a total resurgence in popularity. Yes..
