"The Knicks stretched their winning streak to 8 games by pulling out a one 22 one 20 victory at Miami. Julius Randle nailed the go ahead three pointer with 1.7 seconds left and finished with 43 points on 16 of 25 from the floor. Nick's coach Tom thibodeau marveled at Randall's game winning shot. Unbelievable. You know, so tough shot, put it in, you know, tip your hat. Randall also was 8 of 13 from three point range. "So Chris, what do you make of their offensive struggles? Are you willing to chalk it up to, hey, they need their guys back or are you now in a position where you're maybe worried about Milwaukee? So I'm going to put a lot of it on just they have the 5th worst offense in the NBA. Right. So you mentioned before those Tom thibodeau bowls, which I always thought that they were really interesting from the standpoint of they obviously played a lot of time without Derek rose. And they held their own, you know, largely because of what you pointed out, they played their best players long minutes, even when rose was out, which was risky given that rose might have gotten hurt for that same reason. Anyway, you know, they could hold the fort for just long enough, but then I've always wondered, and there's not really a way to determine it definitively. But I've always wondered if when a team goes without a guy for so long, then they finally get that guy back and then they're right back out of the lineup again because they get hurt or because they like physically aren't right. I've always wondered if that kind of like it would be like if you ran a marathon, you get to the finish line and then when you get through the finish line, I actually got another four miles coming around. Like that has to be just kind of like, God, you know, I'm tired, I'm exhausted. And I think the bucks have enough defense to stay competitive and win a lot of these games. But one, Giannis can't play every minute because butt is not going to butt is not going to be Jason Kidd here and play his superstar 8 million minutes. If anything, we've seen the opposite in the playoffs before where he's subbing on us out with like two minutes left in a game to get him a breather. But I just wonder on some level are the guys exhausted from trying to hold down the fort for so long with that Middleton. Also Middleton is like the most traditional star have, really. Right. Where I just kind of feel like creating Giannis is capable of doing it obviously is a great passer, but he's got deficiencies that make Middleton the more dangerous player of the two. In certain moments, which is why that's stupid thing a playoff run or two ago where we were like, you know, Batman and Robin, but honest is Robin. You remember, so but if you have to have those conversations, there's obviously some truth to it that Middleton is just the guy that he's more of a mid range threat. You know, he's more of a three level scorer than Giannis. So I think that that takes a toll. I mean, if you look at it just on a base level, the role guys, a lot of the bench players have just not shot well this year. Bobby portis has had a perfectly fine year, but he's shot 32% from three. Pat Connaughton normally a very good three point shooter, one of the ones they rely on the most as a role guy shooting 31% George Hill 31%. Joe inglis, who's new to the rotation, but like his playing 20 minutes a game, 31%. So Wes Matthews 31%.

"And you then continue down this road of trying to get a star, right? Like you have all these extra assets, you traded the 11th overall pick for three first round picks from the Oklahoma City Thunder. You have this extra Dallas pick still. You have your picks, like there's a lot of, there are a lot of avenues that could open up down the road, even if there isn't a star available right now. There are avenues that could open up down the road that could make this look different in hindsight. I don't even want to say it looks bad because I don't know that it doesn't look bad. I don't think I'm quite as low on this as everyone else seems to be. I don't know that I love it. It's just not sexy. There's nothing sexy about bringing in Jalen Brooks. He doesn't sell jerseys, man. It's not, it's not anything like what the next did, but that might be a benefit. That might be more of a feature than a bug. But the nets are doing. As it worked yet. So you have Tom thibodeau is your head coach. You're going to be winning on effort and grit and probably burning dudes out. There's only so many point guards that can actually do that. What Tom thibodeau wants them to do in the league. Jalen Brunson is unquestionably one of them. So it's a great move for the Nixon that regard. It just doesn't win the PR game. And it's not ultimately what needs to be done. It can't be it for them. And I'm really glad that you brought up the three lefties thing because again, I have no idea what you do with Julius Randle. And I think that there's a lot of that Julius Randle aftermath that's sort of seeping into this where, okay, now the Knicks are all in on Jalen Brunson, like this, again, moving heaven and earth to get him. Well, they gave all the money to Julius Randle after one year. Jalen Brunson's breakout year was then one year really. I know it's been developing here for a minute, but he really came through one year. There's not a lot of faith in the rose administration. Yeah. Yeah. Where he's a $27 million player, it's been one year, for sure. Totally. So I understand who are starving for a true superstar. One, they're not getting it, even though it's going to be a damn good player for them. And two, there's not a lot of faith in the fact that the Nixon have done business up until this point where they've overpaid overachievers. And you can look at Jalen Brunson, and I don't think this is correct, but you can look at Jalen Brunson and say, here we go again. So they need to do something else than the issue is. It's still the Knicks. It's still the white points next. And I don't know who's deeply interested outside of Donovan Mitchell of going in and I don't know if Donovan Mitchell changes everything for them either. Yeah, like and it seems like Donovan isn't available first and foremost as well. He also is under contract by the Utah JS. Yeah, so like I think that'd be cool. What's your reaction to Kemba's very short honeymoon in his hometown? Brutal, just brutal. Let's talk about on a human level first because it was such a celebrated homecoming in Kemba Walker, one of the all time good guys in the league and he was so excited to come home, come home to New York and play for the Knicks. "I am this would be an enormous deal for the Knicks in my opinion. The number 19, the Knicks are I think probably going to lose Nerlens Noel in free agency just cuz it's really hard for them to retain him unless they really want to dive deep into their office space. Deep but I think it's going to cost real amount of money to retain him in their cap. Space Mitchell Robinson is already on the scene. Miss Robinson is really effective as a rim protector. This would be kind of the perfect complement next to Mitchell Robinson or you know Off the Bench with Mitchell Robinson early in his career as an elite-level pick-and-roll Defender Huang Versatile who can do a lot of different schemes provide, a lot of different coverage looks to opposing offenses. He needs to shoot it like the offense has to get better, but I think Aruba is currently the best defensive player in this draft right now. If we're speaking today, and I would take him at number nineteen. I would love to have taken him earlier than this, but it's like imagine how you do much, Tom Thibodeau loves Taj Gibson, like, oh yeah. This is this is that. Yeah. But with more upside defensively than Tha Jazz and and just younger and I know he spend the Real Madrid system forever but you still kind of scratching the surface of what he could be as an offensive place. I don't think it's close. Then the defense is is wild and a good sense and just a crazy amount of energy and motor that also coached him to do really values and the franchises start to Value since he's gotten over. But I guess my, my question to you is when you watched the the fever game, just real quick. Sure, did you take anything out of there? With said this guy should go up 10 spots. I know score a couple of buckets, early birth And you spot me switch to guard to rant cards and postcards, and wings some guards. Did that do anything for you? Or you were kind of already set on what he was, as a prospect and just more reinforced than I opened anything off. Definitely more reinforced, if only because it was still on an international Court, where the court is still a bit, more condensed than if it was like an NBA court size or spacing out for like twenty six feet and he really has to guard out on an island. "Today. Meanwhile, the school Tom Thibodeau won coach of the year yesterday. Congratulations to Tibbs again. He's a friend. Um, he came and worked here at ESPN. He was a regular on get up for Was it two seasons? How long was he with us? It was 1.5. Right? Because I I think was he let go. He was with us for quite a while. He did. He did at least a couple dozen chose. Yeah, He was with us a lot older, the playoff run of 2019, and he's an excellent analyst and a good guy, and I thought deserving, but what I will say is, he just sort of edged out Monty Williams and I did see some complaining. On Twitter last night that Monty Williams accomplishment this year was greater than what Tom Thibodeau did, and that if Monty Williams had done what he did in New York rather than Phoenix, That he would have won coach of the year to which I reply. Yeah. Exactly. The Knicks have been so bad for so long. People forget how favorably people talk about them. I remember this vividly because I was covering the visiting team. I was covering the Bulls when they were going up against the Knicks in the nineties and all of the conversation about how the Knicks get favorable treatment. Get all the attention. Get all this. That and the other and yes, that's right. It is actually underscores why it is so unimaginable and disgraceful. They've been so bad for so long because they have so many built in advantages. People in this town are still talking about the Knicks. Now they've been had for a week, the next just one by 40 points. People are talking about the Knicks. That's who the Knicks are. So if you're complaining that the Nixon and their coach got special attention, because he coaches the next well, just where have you been? I guess the reality is you haven't been around a team that mattered in 20 years that that really is what that told me. When I was reading those because if this had happened 20 years ago, wouldn't have even been discussed, and no one would have said a word. Of course, the coach of the Knicks got coaching here. It's not even worth talking about. It was either the guy in New York are the guy coaching the Phoenix Suns. I mean, these things aren't that complicated doesn't make them right. They just are not everything that is, is right. Lots of things are and are wrong. This is it is, it doesn't make any difference if it's right or not. So that's what happened last night. I was watching that yesterday. He's You know, The other thing about Tibbs is he was fun last night with those guys I was watching. He was on the Did you see it? The pre game with him and Barkley and Ernie and all those guys, you know, he's lightened up a little. He's laughs a little bit. You know, he's the most intense person you'll ever meet. He is a very intense person, but I do think he's lightened up a little bit, and it was nice to see him like that. This year was kind to him. It's also worth reminding fans that this is merely a regular season a war. There's some Recency bias here because the Knicks, the not advanced The funds did, But that's a big part of this, too. Like the Sun's winning in the first round in advancing past, the Lakers or people are thinking, just like any time you'll see like Johannes wins the MVP award. They get knocked out early in the playoffs, and people freak out. That's not how it works. Right? Right. It is a regular season award. Even though I've never been convinced that should be I have. I've taken this position before. That the NBA is a sport that is so postseason dominant now. Where the post season is so much more important than the regular season. And I think this is a terrible thing terrible. No one seems to be able to do enough about it. I give Adam credit. He's trying. He tried with the postseason play in tournament and I believe he'll try other things. Look, Let's just talk Turkey here, okay? If you love then it's good for you. God bless you. Your team is great. Like the next in the Hawks the best because This is really their championship for both these teams. No one thought the next are gonna be here before the season started. Give him credit. Atlanta with the start that they got off, too, and there was entry with Atlanta this year going into the season, that's the way to get to the finals or anything. If they could take that next step. They got rid of Lloyd Pierce. Remember, a lot of people were critical of that. And Nate McMillan should have never been fired by the Pacers got promoted, and then they're the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. This is gonna be a tough physical. "Impact of a guy like Tom Thibodeau in New York. And I'd argue the second guy are another guy who's had the most impact in his first year in a team and I'm not gonna count James Harden. The other blade a long time. But besides, Thibodeau is a coach. I think Chris Paul's means extra greatest impact. You can make us a player and I mean nobody's talking about Chris Paul, which is ridiculous because they might win the West. And you know, I get back to your cage. I'm not sure why there's you know feelings that he shouldn't be When it I think what helped him what should help him in, and I said this at the time when Jamal Murray went down to that injury I'm sitting there saying all right, if anybody else doubts about yoke its yet see what Yokich does now, between the time that that your mom Marie has been lost to Denver, their second best player and where he can take this team. Have a chance to finish third. I think they're 10 and three without Jamal Murray. That should be the capper for yoga. The Robin that should be the end of the argument that he has made players better. Despite the fact that they have lost your mom or I haven't gone backwards. They have actually gotten better with a chance to get third. But overall, you know, Yokich has been, you know he's 1/4 place finish. I think a couple years ago in the M V P. I just don't think people No, we We always look at the honest Sis and the LeBron's obviously as the guys but no and Yokich plays every game. I mean, this is a season where people are talking about. Oh, my God, the MBA. It's been a ridiculous schedule on it has been a very tough schedule for players. And up Until a few weeks ago, he kept on hearing about Jo Ellan beats name They were rewarding him people for despite the fact he's missed 19 games, you're going to reward somebody this year, the league's biggest honor, the M V. P. How about how about giving a few extra points to a guy's played in every game like he has Chris Paul, by the way, who played point guard has at his age is only missed one. Me. Those guys were one too. Yeah, Look, I mean, I think the honest also has had a great year. He's not gonna get it three years in a row, but clearly it's going to be Yokich at this point in the season, so it's a gears a little bit. I had mentioned James Harden before and Mitch when the James Harden trade went down for Brooklyn. At that moment, it felt more like a luxury than a necessity. But it's clearly been More of the latter. And you look at it the Nets or 27 7 with James Harden their under 500 without him there even under 500 games where Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have played together, I think in some ways, you know hard may have saved this whole Durant Kyrie era. He may have saved those guys from a lot of criticism as well. How much do you read into what we've seen from Brooklyn? As of late and how much of that is just sort of like you can't say too much about it. Because you know that that Hardin is on the way back. Well hardens on the way back. We'll see what happens with him. Everything you've said about him in terms of the impact is true. I always felt even when they made the trade, even when he pulled in Houston. I felt the version they're going to get him. It's like, why do you need Kyrie? Irving Now you still want to have Kyrie Irving, but I've always felt that Hardin is a better player. He sets up people better, and I think that's one of the things that you're referring to. When you talk about their record is The floor is space better. He just is a better natural playmaker carries a wonderful score, and we all know he's tremendous ist as a finisher became part of the better player. I mean, James Harness an M V P Type of player and I used to think that the key for the Nets in terms of long run would be the health of Kevin Durant. I've kind of changed my mind. I mean, Kevin Durant still is the best player there when everybody is healthy. Boy, They better have James Harden because I just don't know if hardness compromised If he's diminished, Robin, what kind of run them that the Nets can make, especially because we all know it's it's all about their offense. They're not going to stop a lot of people in the playoffs. They're not built that way. They've gotten a little bit better, but really their thing is going to be there. Going to outscore people and heart is gonna have a lot to do with it. So I'm very like everybody else. I'm very interested to see how the what happens when he gets back. The other thing I'll mention to is And this will not be a small detail. Steve Nash is a rookie coach in his first playoff run. We're gonna see what kind of adjustments he makes. We're gonna see what happens on an 18 No. One running a playoff game if the Nets are unfortunate to be on the wrong end of that, if he calls time out If he ends up costing them a game. We'll see. We've never been in that pressure situation, So it's it's all in front of Brooklyn. But who knows? At this point what they're going to be able to do. But when you then you're not doing the scouting of every other team on a regular basis, I know you have scouts you're certainly not doing that with college, but it's just a very hard job to do twofold and. Another cautionary tale of taking that over I mean everybody wants that power but I think we've seen two of these guys. Now fact three of these guys. Now, all of which I think you would say were subpar to very below average in that role but. We respect them as guys that are on the sidelines as basketball coaches. That is their expertise in that is doc rivers who took on that role Tom Thibodeau who took on that role and Stan Van Gundy who took on that role and yet got hired as coaches though it didn't go well at their last stops. I mean doc better than the other two but we thought. Hires because these guys are good basketball coaches who were miscast trying to run everything for sure absolutely and ultimately it's another good opportunity for him when New Orleans area there even though they have Zion, they have ingram granted these a restricted free agent. He'll likely back matched any offer sheet or whatever This is still sort of A. Team right now that can go in many different directions depending on how David Griffin wants to build it out and I look forward to seeing the ways in which Van Gundy, Utilize Zion and the ways in which he tries to get him going off because remember you know before all the three point shooting, we've seen the last ten years or so that has. Who Do they try to sign I am WHO's coaching the team, but you know I'm excited to see if they're able to get. Zion, going and creative ways that they weren't able to do as much during the season despite his success he posted up a lot man I. WanNa see some more pick and roll with Zion I wanNA see some more creativity with him, handling the ball and running pick and roll, and that will largely come from other personnel changes that come to the roster that allow that to happen. But Hey, man SVG had success with some different types of teams in the past and I look forward to seeing what he can do here with him, and that team has a good roster they under performed badly. Made sometimes teams underperformed because you look at their roster and you go man aol have the goods like that team underperformed I. Think so too. I think of course it I mean look I mean Lonzo I think Lonzo hit one shot in the bubble well, even though they're young that defense was bad even though they had good individual defenders, they've jrue holiday one of the best perimeter guard defenders, Ingraham and Lonzo. They were good defenders of the Lakers. They were the last two years. They were good. They were not good defenders last season with New Orleans. And Zion I, mean he was horrific. He was so bad on defense. It was it was really sad to watch. This is the guy who is blocking three point shots closing out from the opposite side of the paint at Duke just a year prior, which is why people wonder how much of it was fatigue coming back but season how much of it was the injury limiting him how much of it was effort I? Don't know I don't know what it was but regardless. He stunk on defense, and all of this needs to change next season for this team to be anything that have any chance of actually getting into the playoffs it can't be all
