"That's a great song. Mike fancy may a neal was fantastic. Right oh my gosh. Have you ever seen that guy drum. His drum set turns a circle and he moves. His seat is crazy. You need to see it if you it. Oh my god anyway. Back to tom sawyer. Island if you have not visited the parks or if you have visited the parks but if not gone to tom sawyer island tom sawyer. Island is a massive outdoor playground that pays homage to the adventurous title character of mark. Twain's eighteen seventy six literary masterpiece the adventures of tom sawyer. Tom sawyer island hearkens back to a simpler time of imagination and adventure. It's endless trails. Dark caverns and rustic structures offer gas a style of old fashioned outdoor fund. And things that many of us found remember from our childhood the original version of tom sawyer. Island opened at disneyland in nineteen fifty six. According to the disney company. The attraction was designed by walt disney. Himself exactly very strong affinity for the for the world mark twain created in his novels. Walt found himself. Unsatisfied with the island's original design days before construction was set to begin. He took the plans home and reimagined. The landscape design creating two inlets coves and overall shape of the island that it is known for today. Yeah and it opened at magic kingdom in may of nineteen seventy-three may twentieth nineteen seventy three to be exact and it's a lot of fun. Have you been over there lately. No i haven't and moore's law reason why is because of renovations. When we were there november. The moat was drained for the work. They were doing on the tracks for and so that was really weird And you know if we wanted to go they might let us walk across. I wasn't about to go ask so well in the back story of tom. Sawyer island isn't so much a back story of the attraction but for a back story of the story of tom sawyer. I'll give you a little tidbit. Mark twain was born samuel clemens in eighteen thirty five in florida missouri. He grew up not too far away from small town of hannibal from there. He would raft over two islands in the mississippi and watch as majestic steamboats paddled by as a young man. He became riverboat. Pilot listening to the leads men to sing out. Mark twain which indicated the river measured two fathoms deep making it safe to proceed as a writer his two most famous creations tom sawyer and huckleberry finn sprang from his boyish memories of life in the mississippi. All the names on the island can be found in the literary classic huckleberry finn so you know when he was watching those big Whereabouts go by. That's why you can now ride the river all the way around tom sawyer island. Exactly exactly pretty cool. That is so much to do over there. Oh yeah bear bridges and all that. Yeah we love to talk. We go over there. Yeah we would go over there in hang out and i mean you had no real timetable until it was time for them to close the island now for fireworks so yeah and it's not a fun taken wrong the wrath back. I mean it's like you know yesteryear. I like it. I like those are barrel sounded lighting. Ha yeah so much good stuff. Yeah.

Three thousand dollars. Oh my goodness Compare that to oculus to for three hundred dollars. That's a crazy price point. I don't know how the company could get away with such a thing.

"I still have down with my grandfather telling me stories of old. The older in better days used to say well. He's no longer here to share those stories and i wish i'd catalog. That's why i felt such an affinity to thome listener from alabama. Now living in berlin. Who started sending us recordings of memories of growing up. Enjoyed this shirt. True story read by tom himself. In this special edition of the show way calling reminiscent with tom. Thinking back as i've been doing a lot lately of my childhood. I realized that we did have some tom sawyer. Days to which surprises me greatly. Because we just did things in didn't think much of it to this day. I never thought about childhood net manner. I remember now one of our ventures may not be that great for you but for me and it was a pleasant time. Many houses we lived in one was just off the end of a runway. Eighteen bordering on the berkeley airforce base. The base was located along the shore of mobile bay. Sure it took a few weeks getting used to the takeoff and landings over the top of our roof but it was a nice place to live and besides that i got my revenge later as the airforce base closed and was turned into a civilian airport. My wife and i rented airplane in columbus ohio and flew down to visit family and i landed on the same runway and i was thinking revenge it last. Let's get back to my story though fearless. Fred spent a weekend with us. We got the great idea to go crabbing in the bay half mile from the house the shoreline along the airforce base wasn't playground for us tree logs wash down the alabama river and hundreds of them got long jam along the shoreline adjacent to the fence of the air force base. I don't know why they never came. Forward must have not been enough money in. Oh well i'll fund was to walk other jump from one to another until we reach the end and the mid go back again back to those crabs. There's nothing as good as fresh boiled crab and butter. So fred and i went to a small grocery store where mom always shop and got some soup bones with these and homemade net made of those plastic bags than oranges. Come in and of course enough string in a bucket reset out to the bay was a fantastic day weather wise. We made our way east to the bay crossing the old railroad tracks and has the wooden homes fenced in and always with barking dogs. There was an old wooden rotten more than jetted into the bay and cautiously. We made our way to the end cutting strings into proper length in tying the soup bones to the ends re lord the bait into the water and waited credit. I enjoyed watching the flock of pelicans circling and diving into the water and sometimes having trouble taking off with a full crawl of fish soon the strings begin to move this meant that the crabs were feasting very slowly have to raise strain i enough to barely see the crabs below the surface and with homemade net. We gently scoop the crabs out of the water and in the bucket. It wasn't long before we had caught. Ooh dozen good size crabs. And we couldn't wait to get home to those sweet crabs in butter and making our way back home and almost to the railroad tracks and passing these old wooden homes. A man sat on his front porch. Boys got their fresh crabs. Reinsured gonna sell me some. Fred and i looked at each other with dollar signs in her eyes. Sure mr and with the old dog barking at the fence. The man came to ocean picked out what he wanted and.

"R. J. on the black one so Michael where where get rid of you know we already got rid of Tom Sawyer and it will pull out all these monuments that you saw I want to start up are in position to where we can get all this rap music pulled off the radio stations are we get all this all about the album's gold all Spotify and all these other little media sources because you know they told the N. word around and obviously it's it's offensive to me I mean I I I right now I do think about you know the type of lyrics that are coming out of the cold and cold hearted soul you know I just want to know if I got any other brothers listen I'm not out helped me get this thing started all these are so called music out there R. J. all offended by their work what have you seen the new Dave Chapelle is just a short bit yeah he did after the George Floyd lament I have not no okay I think it's twenty eight minutes long it's real it's real short I think it's on his property but I'm not positive that it's out like in a sealed and they made a little make shift stage that he walks up on and people are properly social distance so that was very important I know that you know that and they're sitting on hay bales or or he they brought lawn chairs and they're sitting out and he walks out and for twenty eight minutes he speaks and not one time during his comments is he funny that's not a crime he he's allowed to have a serious talk but in that twenty eight minutes I keep saying him to go back and recorded the encounter I would estimate he said D. in were a hundred deaths now let me replace the N. word who is with baseball is commentary which is meant to be real serious is him going and then baseball walked up there like baseball SO that baseball October he had come is to say I don't like baseball where you he literally uses him for as a seller instead of like he throws you in work so many times then she talks about Candace Owens and Nick Candace Owens was he's very offended that Candace Owens pointed out the George Floyd had a criminal record went to prison put a shot gun to a woman's belly while his buddies came over and rob your house served five years in prison it was in the middle of committing a crime allegedly when he resisted arrest which is what put him on the floor on the ground the first time and he doesn't rather than refute that argument he refers to the fact that her genitalia smells bad right that that's that's the class in this of his argument is that it goes back to the inward a hundred times and I thought to myself it is this what passes for social commentary in this country because it's all it's all wrong what it does absolutely so that that's changed let's change the the comedian that's what a white comedian up there is nothing but a minority what the comedian out there let's put a predicate meeting up there and they did that very thing I love what the outrage so I don't know why I got up there staying at work Asian or Filipino or you know any other person still gonna partners the opportunity is mind boggling you don't like this were given all around you so you want to tell people that wrote it that did it that was that more sure about news organization that populate brink a longer life but you could start out there and like you said it's too hard to talk to you so what is the problem or so I can imagine and you know it is very good with with the music you know it's soul soul so what do you like instead of like a string of other work at it it amazes me that were so upset that is so wonderful to bring about such hard memories and as I explained what our a brother of mine Jordan but it does bother was very well thought it was great your great grandfather was right you know what I know we got it so what is another three hundred years with five hundred years what about the point where we start realizing that no one can give what is white but the board has already given up you are individual have to spell out and make it white with just spelled making white with one another because no one's going to quote unquote give it the respect of the dignity that we grow we just are when we treat each other the way that we do you know about that so the alcoholic with a bottle in his hand talking about I can't believe it we're just yours open yourself at a pocket yeah but all your mind blowing but my goal is to make sure we have black start treating each other right and we have black start battering each other's lives no one else is going to care no no okay we are we are a very small percentage of United States and we don't think that we don't know one another is more detrimental than any other group can do but that one little but you said well Kerr and here we are just trying to complete your rate every kid that the best country in the world what was built off both so it off Baltimore walked off white forty Gerry you know that your basketball program by a strong statement R. J. what a strong statement I have fought for.

"I think it was really easy to pick the losers from last night's debate then the winners and yeah as I said CBS Los Gayle king whose make and I don't like fifteen or sixteen million dollars a year as host of the CBS morning show he's made a fortune that's Oprah's friend Gayle king I don't dislike Gilkey I actually I actually like Gil king I think that she's had some decent interviews where you know she's gone after some serious issues I do not dislike Gayle king to be quite honest but though she's also she's lapping Norah o'donnell numerous times regarding your salary I'll tell you that right now but they both lost they lost control very early in the debate I don't think they ever got the control back the cross talk is I played that montage of some of the worst of it the shouting the arm waving the finger pointing it just didn't look good it'll be on the ball right in front of Lee came across the best that he's locked in quite a while maybe the entire campaign Colbert show are I think a good command I thought Colbert shar had the most steady demeanor on the stage I am not a clover shore fan able clearly I I I'm not voting for any of these individuals because ideologically I disagree with with virtually you know what everything they believe in but I can still recognize the clover shore who is a moderate that she had probably the the most solid demeanor and looked to be the most adult on that state and like I said border judge he through March but he just didn't do anything he fell flat as far as P. bridges last night R. yeah and when was it doesn't help Byton if Colbert sars look and get a fairly decent help fight in that the that moderate lane you know S. what she was thinking at the moment in regarding a clover shore you know got you know nearly clocked by the Thomas fire you know when they got into it with Biden she was stuck in the middle and you know Colbert shar I think that Snyder's hands it with his waving and swinging I think the clover shore almost got mail and she was asked you know what she was thinking at the moment she told CNN that she was afraid she was going to get hit by Tom Sawyer then she laughed and said that her first thought was well he has deep pockets Colbert shar he got a pass on the clover shore as been accused of being a pirate clover shore as been accused of being really nasty and condescending to a staff nurse screaming at a staffer because Stanford and give her like a a fork with her salad wonder I mean just crazy crazy crap the black voters by Thomas Stiers is amassing in South Carolina are being taken from Joe Biden I so I need you you at Tom's tire that's that's getting a a base of some African American black support in South Carolina and you know they're they're being taken from Joe Biden but the bottom line Tom started could should stand a chance in hell Tom sires got zero chance at all and that was it has he Italy's come clean with himself is the honest with himself that he's not going anywhere and he's spending you know tens and tens and tens of millions of dollars has he kind of settled up with himself that he's not going anywhere with this whole campaign and is the money just making them feel good by spending it just just out of curiosity Bloomberg yes was better than he was last time but and he sucks so badly last time animal fat saying so much he doesn't have a personality can't tell a joke he can't deliver unprepared line very well with you know any authenticity shows absolutely no empathy for people that don't have sixty billion dollars I still say don't discount Michael Bloomberg I'm just telling you don't discount Bernie was hit but Bernie was not knocked down he wasn't trampled with golf cleats I mean didn't really come out bloody it is what it comes down to I mean there's just too many candidates taking shots at him for any of those shots to be fatal really it was just kind of dispersed if that makes sense to you now Warren took a one shot of Bernie mostly focus the attacks on Bloomberg and of course the the the killing the baby audio we'll get to that coming up in

"In this weird situation that some of us fantasize about that Tom Sawyer thing of being in your own funeral we get to hear all the things people say about you you to finally find out how you're seen what people remember about you do you didn't get a chance to look at Facebook for a while he's still recovering his hands wouldn't stop shaking so you can even use this phone it took another month or so for him to be discharged from the hospital and that's when he finally decided to read through all of the eulogies people have left on this page about a hundred of them it was new year's day after the ball dropped and everyone went to sleep he was recuperating in his parents house so he went down to the basement and settling of the little kitchen island scrolling for hours you know it got to be two and three and three thirty AM and I'm just there at this island reading these things from my laptop one of the first things he spotted right in the middle of all that I misuse was a post from his brother trying to quash the whole thing written the day after day of supposedly died I think my family was honestly like pretty upset reading some of these things like two friends of David there seems to be some confusion and unofficial word on David's passing at the time of this posting Dave Marr is still with us until you hear official word that David is passed please out of respect for him and our family refrain from posting about David in the past tense it got seventy likes three comments but the Facebook algorithm had buried it it was overshadowed by all of the comments coming in facilitating the dead Dave narrative some of those got twice as many lakes and reading these comments was sort of like you imagine people but a lot of memories things he did some of which he didn't even remember funny stories a bunch of folks protects them just because they were so random there is one from an ex girlfriend who is appreciative of the fact that he broke up with her inside his car because it was cold outside one woman said he was a great storyteller and.

"Tom Sawyer made the mistake of chatting with old lady around at Sloan ABC Martha Raddatz she was talking about Donald trumps accounting and whether you like it or not there's a poll out that says seventy percent of people are pretty happy about what's going on Tom Starfire beg to differ and Martha Raddatz had enough of his crap is that Mr Starr you say that you can take on Donald Trump on the economy but the latest Quinnipiac national poll again released just this week says seventy percent of voters describe the nation's economy as excellent or good so how do you convince them that it changes needed when they think they're doing so well and Donald Trump I think if you take a look at what he says everything he says superficially sounds right but it's actually alive so when he says the economy is growing I can show that in fact all the money's going to rich people most of the stock eighty five percent of the stocks are held by the top ten percent and to go back to that seventy percent number you are talking about the wealthy they're not all wealthy people seventy percent say the economy's good and they're doing well well I'm just here we are on the show and you're standing up for Mr trump version of the car and I'm telling you I'm telling you about a national poll I'm not standing up for anybody and I'm telling you about a national poll there is a different story of this economy and this country that has to be told Tom started translation right there you're all stupid you think you're doing well but I'm here to tell you you're not that's four oh one K. of yours it's a Mirage that's what it is it's a Mirage to what Tom dire if you've lost Martha Raddatz you might just want to drop out right now because there's nobody more in the back for what you guys are trying to accomplish in a lady Raddatz she was tired of your crap it's the ninety three W. "Pretty early on and when moving pictures came out it was massive I was in high school when it came out and everybody had that record everybody and and that song in particular Tom Sawyer ways you could hear that throughout the throughout the entire like high school when I was growing up when I was in high school I when that record came out I mean it was massive and made a gigantic impact I'm image and a gigantic impact on the at least it might lose their north where I went to school I mean that song was should we were so huge when times are came out but it was weird because I've been listening to rush for a while at that point and to to see them chart which was you know gratifying really fun but kind of strange this at the same time because it was one of those you know time when you when you kinda maybe you know discover a band on your own and then when everybody starts like in it you get a little mad you know if you know what I mean well yeah it's a silly thing and and sometimes it's with bands that honestly for me like I would feel like I was the biggest Led Zeppelin fan in my middle schools like no one likes what's up on more than me right and then people challenge you on it and you're like listen I'm the biggest was up okay I'm I wasn't even born when Led Zeppelin was at their height who am I and you know the two thousand go together because lots of faults alright I didn't discover them like they were already a a massive act it's it's weird though because that happens like I felt that way when rush broke you know I mean like when when everybody in my high school was suddenly listening to Russian like Hey Hey that's my thing what do you do when you can't listen to Rush yeah because I go back to their first album you know I'm but you know I was about as it everybody goes through a period where they obsessed with one band and it's you know at a time and rush was definitely I had my rush period I think everybody did here's Vicki on WGN I Vicky hi I made a Russian drop me and my brother off the road right in nineteen eighty I was well and my brother was and better write fan ever seen them over forty nine wow yeah I think Canada couple years ago I saw a lady and they went out like fire the orbit around yeah yeah it's a big it's a it's a it's a massive loss right Vicki I mean this is you know it means I can't believe it the other day when I heard it was bad I cried like a baby and I admit that no no I don't blame you I don't blame you Vicky I mean you know like that is if he's you know a brush it was a very impactful band that to touch a lot of people especially for someone like you travel all over the place to see him and you know seem over forty times it's amazing yeah yeah I mean it's like it can be an eye ball being a female back then it was really kind of weird you know either my girlfriend's like what you like rush yeah we like you know it's always it's out like that Starkey whatever it's in a I mean I know it's a cliche but when rushes kind of a guy band like a you know it's if they were they were always associated with just like guys you know and so to to hear good to hear such a strong female fan is pretty awesome you know but you know like the boyfriend over the years stop in any of the going to the bathroom break however there is no line there is no waiting like go to the that's true that's true I thank you thanks for the call but yeah I take care of it zero wow there's a fan Fauria over forty times ma'am that's pretty that's pretty impressive why is it some people say kneels last name differently not night you know it's part it's not it's peered like spear it with the P. S. T. on okay here okay we did in the video that they do with a Paul Rudd and Jason Segal they say peer and he corrects them really yeah because they're trying to say it differently like you know because it's easily peer to perks peeled there's got it there's got to be a video of I say I've said perk my anti I should be apart pretty much my entire time is being a rush fan so if I'm mispronouncing it I'm I'm I I you know I'm not because because I've heard it pronounced I've heard it pronounced three four different ways I know and it's really annoying because there's even a video on Rolling Stone dot com of Getty Lee saying that it's like here with empty and a T. on it peer to peer but that video they're just like now it's part that I I I don't think he ever really cared all that much I mean I I would like I would like to get it right sure you know what I mean and just I mean obviously in his honor you know but I've said part my hold CMU part I've set me apart the whole time I've I've been a fan and if I'd been mispronouncing it I apologize but yeah at eight four seven because as I remember all the kids in high school wearing their T. shirts the next day in school everybody were everybody had rush T. shirts we weren't allowed to wear T. shirts though it's at my school uniforms now we have uniforms we just couldn't wear shirts that had stuff written on them okay you know ed and but we did have uniforms next that actually started the year I got there that started and because before that I was looking at old an old pictures and all your books and stuff there's people with Zeppelin shirts on with long here because I started high school in nineteen seventy nine so it was like right at the end of the you know long haired burn out Zeppelin era where you just were Zeppelin tee shirts and blue we'd and that I I you know I'm in so they had to dig they drew a line in the sand at Luther north they were like you can't wear these T. shirts anymore because everybody was walking around Sabah sure Townes memory was high and they were trying to curl little bit of that so the year that I got their nineteen seventy nine was you could wear T. shirts reading written on unless it was a loser north tee shirt you can wear Luther north shirt yeah like property of loose the north athletic exact that sort of stuff that kind of thing or like your gym shirt which would just say Luther north and have the the wildcat logo on it that was fine but you could wear rush shirts anymore that was half my closet which concert shirts I wore concert shirts all our our band shirts all the time in grade school eight four seven area code says since nineteen eighty one when I was fourteen rush and most importantly Neil part were part of my life they were woven into my DNA losing the it was like losing a part of myself I know it's weird to to to think that people can get so attached you know to a band I'm but yeah it's it's a it's ME it's it's it's interesting how people get like really emotionally attached to certain to certain artists in certain bands you know I'm here we go four one four echo says time stand still featuring Aimee Mann is one of Russia's best pop songs when you combine Russian Aimee Mann that's good Dave says before I even got tickets for the M. P. tour I had vivid dream of hearing Tom Sawyer live outside the concert hall seven seven three area code the first time I saw rush was it the ran Hearst ice arena opening for Kansas it was the twenty one.

"Two nine eight one seven two hundred new part judge armor for rush passed away and we've been talking about some of the essential songs that you should probably listen to and of course Tom Sawyer what can you say about this on I'm a little bit of time so where can we crack a little bit of Tom Sawyer here town rush is unlikely career is radio hit makers continue to nineteen eighty one with Tom Sawyer which charted all over the world became the band's signature song read the lyrics with songwriter pie deploy his original lyrics were kind of a portion of a modern day rebel free spirited individual striding through the world wide eyed and purposeful it said I and the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be namely me I guess the mind boggling kit enveloping drum fill midway through in the US song ranks with the you can fill counts in the air tonight which was just released weeks earlier as one of the most celebrated in the air drum fills in the history of rock countless emitter drummers of attempted to recreate the part in their garages and basements but nobody has come close to topping the original it's still challenging and satisfying to play Neil Peart's set of Tom Sawyer in two thousand twelve here we go it's amazing you know I remember I started listening to rush in the seventies you know.

Mark Twain's complicated relationship with the typewriter

"This is a story about was by then on his way to becoming the world's most famous writer in humorous Huck Finn Tom Sawyer at the same time the tools of writing were undergoing a profound transformation from fountain pens with their leaking and smudging inc the pleasant sound of tapping a key whose corresponding letter was magically stamped to paper this new technology did not emerge with the speed the tweet according to an IBM history of the typewriter one of the first American attempts at producing such machine looked very much like a book Tour's block and unfortunately performed with about the same delicacy Christopher Leith scholes who was ultimately the first American L. D. typewriter like the ones we no longer use today was stymied early on when the only key could get to work was W but by eighteen seventy one when twain laid eyes on Remington in a Boston store the machines were somewhat reliable at least according to salesman twain and a friend were given a demonstration twain later recalled the salesman explained to us showed examples of its work and set it could do fifty seven words a minute a statement which we frankly confessed we did not believe so he put his type girl to work and we timed her by the watch she actually did the fifty seven sixty seconds we were partly convinced but said it probably couldn't happen again it did we time the girl over and over again with the same result always she won out twain asked for a price one hundred and twenty five dollars he was told it's like twenty five hundred bucks today he bought it on the spot Twain recognized its utility as a writing tool almost immediately in a letter typed to his brother that contained some what infrequent punctuation Twain wrote the machine has several virtues I believe it will print faster than I can write one may Lee back in his chair and work it it piles an awful stack of words on one page it don't must things or scatter inc lots around of course it saves paper but Twain fell out of love with me after a year or two I found that was degrading my character twain leader wrote via dictation in his autobiography instead of virtues he found the machine to be full of caprices full of defects devilish ones Twain gave his machine to his Rider Pal William Dean House Twain said ah without the typewriter in his life my morals began to improve it's worth noting here that Twain was a bit of a fibber even when telling stories intended to be true anyway Twain said House sent the machine back to him after just six months even away twice after that point said but it wouldn't stay twain tried to figure out who to unloaded on next he settled mkx train coachman who said was very grateful because he did not know the animal and I was trying to make him wiser and better as Twain told the coachman eventually traded it to heretic twain with ultimately come back to the typewriter he's eighteen eighty three book life on the Mississippi was the first literary work to be completed on the sheen according to scholars still twain thoughts about typewriters remained some of his most quoted lines especially a letter he appeared we sent Remington asking the company to cease and desist from using his name has an endorsement please do not use my name in any way twain wrote I don't want people to know I own this curiosity breeding little joker

I didn't hear him say Tom Sawyer Ramon didn't hear him say Tom Sawyer we thought he was asking for a lifeline from other people at the bar and said Tom Sawyer or was repeating what I was saying about the adventures of Tom Sawyer a number of you attempted to come to his defense and say he said Tom Sawyer I didn't hear it. so in the last segment of the show today we will return in fifty minutes five zero we will replay the part of that call that is in dispute and I will I haven't listened to it since then.
