"There's a lot of layers to this and I wrote a I wrote about it on Tuesday. But the only thing I want to say is this if anybody thinks these ball games are legitimate and wants these kids to go all out for these meaningless ball games, they're not paying attention. If you're going to get drafted, protecting yourself is more important than playing in a peach bowl. No one can tell you who won any bowl game last year, except for the playoffs. Now, having said that, the bowls can be meaningless and they can still be great and you could watch them and enjoy like I want as many. I want 700 bowl games, put them on ESPN. There should be not a minute between the end of the college football season and New Year's Day where there's no ball games. Ball game should be every day every minute. But they are meaningless. That's my opinion. I kind of understood what herb street and Desmond Howard, right? We're both trying to say there. It's also a different time. If those guys had the opportunity that these players do now, if they had the understanding that these players do now, really back then I don't even think it was an option. They were just playing a game that was it. There was no oh yeah, I'm gonna sit this game out and get drafted. I think you played in that game to try to raise your draft stock. I'm sure that you cared about the game. I don't think that today's athlete cares the same way that athletes did years ago. I just don't believe that not everybody. You can't just paint a broad brush with everybody, but I don't think there's any question because of the money. What's the basis? Well, yeah, the money is different. And I think that makes athletes try to maximize their earnings more than anything. This is how I look at it. If you have a player who's going to be drafted into the NFL in April. And they want to sit out the sun ball, which nobody's watching unless they bet on it or their family of the kids in the ball game. Why is that a bad thing? Well, it just diminishes the ball. I mean, that's the ball's already diminished. No one cares about the sun ball. But then why is it being played? Because ESPN paid 700 and $1 million to why..

"No one would think it's funny. I knew and I believe the guy's explanation. Now, I guess people are going to say they don't believe the guy's explanation. This is the world we live in now. Well, how does he not do that work, though? I don't think that he should be absolved here. It's reckless at the very least. At the worst, it's obviously horrible. Now, you're right. But he wasn't, why is it reckless? He thinks. How does he think that that kid's father is somebody else? It's your job as an analyst to know. Well, I believe he's the backup analyst, I'm not a 100% drawn that. But again, that's a separate issue. If you want to say, how does he not know that this guy is father was not the kind of reporter who was in the NBA? Fine. I have no problem with that take. You can't possibly think the guy's going to go on the air and make a joke about the guy's father committing manslaughter. And when I heard it, I was, I was like, first of all, you know, you see you come across the Twitter feed and you're thinking what's this? My jaw, legitimately dropped, which has happened far too often in recent times with some of these stories, just in disbelief, oh my God, how can you possibly say that? So I'm with you when you hear the explanation. Is it my first reaction was this guy obviously didn't know or made a mistake or got people confused? That was my first reaction. Because an announcer is not going to go on the air and make that joke. I would hope not. Now I did see another clip to where he said something else on the air that was a little questionable. So look, I never heard of this guy before. I've never listened to him do it a second of a game. I have no idea. I just know that, okay, I can understand it's a mistake because there's no way anybody in their right mind would ever even come close to touching that. However, the excuse is not good enough. You've got to know you're doing a damn NBA game. You're telling me you don't you're just assuming who the guy's father is? Yeah, I mean, I don't see I don't think that's so crazy. Well, try to fire a bull fence, but it led to what could have been or could be a fireable offense because of just negligence. It's stupid. How do you the problem? The problem he waited until Thursday late morning early afternoon to give his side of the story. He should have done it the second the game ended. Or during the game. Well, did he not realize? I mean, the guy probably, I don't know, maybe it doesn't check Twitter because of course this is only a Twitter thing. And I think once LeBron tweeted it, he realized he's in deep shit. Right. But I think that's irresponsible, LeBron to just blast the guy like that without. Because it's an assumption. He's assuming that the guy did it on purpose and there's no way is it now his word versus LeBron or his versus the person who initially I think.

"Will. Speaking of cop, Tom, you'll be in LA Sunday for niners rams. Big game for the niners because they're currently in that 6 seed. But they go with Trey Lance this week, but it's got to be exciting for the week 17 first year. You get a game like that where there's a lot on the line there. Fox on four 25 Sunday. I think what Al said. This is finishing my first full season here with America's game of the week in the late window and when Fox has the double header. But I think Al said it perfectly at the very beginning, which is when you get to that last week and you have for either team when you have a clear playoff ramification when and you're in, that's just a really exciting juice to be a part of. And the niners have a lot Jimmy swirling around them. Who is going to ultimately play the quarterback position in this game. Obviously, when it's division rivals, when they have a history and how the seeding could ultimately line up that some people have already looked and seen, could we see Brady and Jimmy G, could that be a potential but there's just a lot out there where we're really excited for this one Sunday. Now you have a play in game. I mean, you basically have a playoff game with chargers raiders. Have you seen this crazy thing about if the colts lose at 1 o'clock, they both get in with a tie? Yeah. Well, I keep thinking about it. Staley said the Chargers coach. Oh no, no, no. He wouldn't even think about anything like that. I'm sure Rishi besides who feels the same way. I think back to the Herm Edwards line, several years ago. You play to win the game. You don't play to tie the game. I can't see that happening. Tell me, the game's in Vegas Sunday Night. What has his Vegas? Are they all in on the Raiders? Are they rabid about the NFL and the Raiders are in Vegas? Because I just, you know, there's so much to do in Vegas. I could see a sports team sort of, you know, maybe not. And it's such a big tourist place, but go ahead, give me a little. First of all, the hockey team is crazy. I mean, they love because Vegas has a lot of transplants. A lot of people grew up in other places, right? And of course, Vegas has a ton of stuff to do. But you can't go to the show. You can't go to the casino every night. So you have sports. And with the Raiders in particular, tons of people fly in from the Bay Area from Los Angeles, listen to the 12 or 13 seasons here. So you have a whole bunch of folks in the Allegiant Stadium who not necessarily are from the vagus area. But they've had no trouble as far as I know selling tickets. Stadium is great. It's a beautiful stadium. And I mean, to me, I think if you had to say, who's the next franchise that the NBA would put in? I would say Vegas. And baseball, if you build a stadium with a retractable roof, it's too hot to play there in the summertime. As well, because when you look at the golden knights, it's impossible to get a ticket to those games. It's fantastic..

"It's on two B, which is fox's streaming service. We're just so grateful, Jimmy, that in a show of true collegiality, which as you know is not common these days across competing platforms that John yet again finds a way to unite people and unify people. And so there's many ways to see it. There haven't been any conversations yet, but I also think that everyone is still processing John's passing right now. So we certainly would never never say never at all. And you can get Belichick in Parcells to sit there and share stories. The booking's been strong. That's for sure. That was I thought they were both really good on the dock as well. I want to transition just to a couple of NFL things because you guys have big games this weekend. Before we do that, one last thing on the Madden thing, but not really about Matt and it's about you out. Now, you've been on this podcast many times, talking about the no vegetables thing. But the story you told the other day about ordering the French onion soup without the onions. I apologize. I forgot where you told the story. I posted the clip, I should know when you told it. When you do that, does the waiter or waitress I don't even know if those are politically correct servers? I don't know what the term is anymore. Do they look at you like you're a lunatic? Well, that night that's in Green Bay and you know I love cheese and I do love the broth in French onion and I do love the crouton. So it's not the first time I did it, but it's the first time I ordered that in front of John. And I said, can you bring me the French onion soup without the onions? And I think the senator said, yeah, we can do that. And then John said, what? What did you order? So then when it came out and it was perfect because usually the.

"So somewhere out there is the back end of the use of the San Francisco ticket. That's probably worth about a $100,000 right now. It's amazing. So how did he get from Houston to San Diego is the question to get on a train, I guess. Took the train. He went right to the train station and used it. That was it got off the I guess his luggage went on. I don't know what happened to as long as you probably picked it up. Somebody picked it up at the airport in San Francisco for him. But he got on into the many started he started traveling by train for a while. And then he decided to go to the bus drive. Great nugget from Tom and the Doc was that when this first happened before he got the Madden cruiser he was renting Dolly Parton's tour bus I thought that was a funny nugget. Do we know in doing the Doc and the research, do the Madden cruisers exist somewhere? I mean, I'll mention that plane ticket. Where are the Madden cruisers, Tom? Well, the Madden cruiser, the first Madden cruiser, is at the Hall of Fame. In canton and actually is refurbished. It runs, and it is used to take players and youth football teams within a hundred mile radius to come and visit the Hall of Fame to come and help them when they're short of transportation and games. It's in use now. The Madden cruiser, which I just think is wonderful in serving use football in and around canton. Tom, is there one thing that didn't make the final cut that you wish did that you wish we knew and whether it's an interview, whether it's something someone said whether something John said, a storyline, anything that didn't make it that you wished you could have got in there. Oh, there are countless things. But if I could say one, we get a wonderful interview with JA a Don day, the fantastic, if you've worked at ESPN and the LA times and JA kept for a season just at his own volition, a small notebook on whatever he heard John say something that struck him. He wrote it down. And he had this old notebook of Madden isms. And the quote that you hear Bill Belichick read about coaches as geniuses came from JA's wonderful notebook. And we had other people read other quotes from JA's notebook. Sometimes quotes about them, sometimes quotes about football and react to those. And to tie it back to Al, I think one of the reasons why it works so beautifully with pat for so long. And then so beautifully with Al, is each was gifted with the.

"To hear you say that because we so enjoyed it from the very first moment of her saying, you know, people would always tell me what you can't win them all. Well, why can't you? What did you say? That was great. And then she said, he had one floor. Well, he couldn't drive. Was that the time? Actually failed his driver's test. Yeah, that was it. Yeah. Virginia, I mean, he just have to love the fact that she was trying to get a pilot's license. And John refused to get on an airplane after 1979. But I already were talking about the anniversary. So I think it was their 48th or 49th anniversary. It's 2008. And we are going to do as is the case this week too. We get the last game of the season on Sunday Night. And this week, of course, we get chargers raiders, which is perfect. That's when and lose out. So in 2008, we're looking for that game or as close to it as you can get. And the game looks like it's going to wind up in New York. I can't remember whether it was the jets or the Giants. So it's the week before and we're going to get the New York game. But what happens, buffalo somehow comes from behind and in Denver and beach them with a big fourth quarter rally. And then San Diego wins, and then the only game that's going to be win in lose out is Denver at San Diego. Now, what was going to happen is that John had born a great piece of jewelry because Virginia was going to make a very rare trip to join John in New York and they've got these plans and maybe a little Broadway. And then the Buffalo Bills come in and beat Denver. We're going to San Diego. End of that trip. So we got to get in the bus and go across the country and I guess you carry the ring with the McGee with the Virginia at some point in the off season. I'm glad you brought up the bus because I am fascinated by the whole thing of him being afraid to fly having the panic attack and when he said he was never going to play again as the documentary so well, he never flew again. That was it. And the story. Now, when you worked with him, I assume you would fly to the stadium. You didn't take the bus with him, right? No, no, no, no. Now and another great thing in the Doc that drivers of the bus Yarborough with the last name, I think that was great to see. And Joe. Yeah, that was great. With the bus, now when he was coaching, no problem flying or is it just he didn't have a choice and he did it? How did he end up in no choice? Oh no. And then when he started in broadcasting, he did fly. And by the way, so a little bit of trivia here, the last flight he took. He was doing a game in Tampa. And he's flying home. And it's a Tampa to San Francisco flight that's going to stop in Houston. And he's going to change planes. And he's on the Tampa to Houston leg. And that's when he had the all time attack and said, if this thing lands, I'm off forever. So that's when they landed in Houston. He went to the train station, took the train the Russian away home. Now you guys are probably too young to remember in the old days airline tickets. You need to peel one off so you'd have an O in the middle street you've had Tampa to Houston and then you'd have Houston to San Francisco..

"You know, we always talk about the only person that we always talk about being universally liked. We've never heard of bad word about. It's been Scully. And when John passed, it hit me that John's in the same exact category as vin. That is not one person was a bad thing. I think then only amazingly Vince Scully only retired a couple of years ago whereas John like you said it's been out of the picture for many years. And I think he was just sort of an out of sight out of mind guy never had a social media presence, whereas vin was still working and clips of vin would still get posted all the time on Twitter. Those are the two guys that, you know, you say who else, I think it's just Vin Scully and John Madden. I can't think of anyone else. No offense to ally. I know you call games, but you're working in the social media era. Are you going to get people who don't like you in this day and age? But of course. And yeah, I mean, John and Vinny, as close to being universally loved, I'll tell you somebody who died the other day too. Betty White. Yes, that is force testing. But Betty White, you see all of the accolades that are tossed her away almost living to be a hundred years old and yeah, there's just there was something about John. There's something about not only what they did professionally, but just they're manner. The way people perceive them. And for John, even though he was out of the limelight, I mean, the mad game was still there every year. That was important. And every once in a while, you'd see John show up at something, but he's one of those guys. I mean, you know, you just don't forget him. Anybody who remembers him. And you know, the other thing that's interesting, Jimmy is that the last game John did was the Super Bowl in Tampa following the LHC's Pittsburgh against Arizona. I did the game with him. It was the end of our 7th year together. And I never walked out of a booth and felt any better than I did that day because I thought every element of the show hit we have James Harrison running back in the interception hundred yards. Santonio Holmes cash, Larry Fitzgerald having a fantastic postseason scoring with two and a half minutes to go to give Arizona the lead. What are they doing in the Super Bowl to begin with? It was everything was great. The pictures were terrific. John, I thought was as good as he's ever been. And that was it. So there's a glow, and I walk into the truck afterwards and everybody's toasting each other. And then I go home and I'm thinking, wow, this is so great. I mean, John is still top of his game, 7 years into this thing next year. We're going to open up Sunday Night's football because Dallas is going to open up their new stadium. So we know we're going to get the cowboys at Jerry world. And then all of a sudden in April, you know, they kept me and he goes, I've been out here for a week trying to talk him into going on, and no. And when John stepped aside, all he said was it's time. He didn't need any fans. He didn't even need any goal going away, celebration or tour or anything like that. That was John, it's time..

"You know, from trying to book guests, 38 requests, 38 yeses. Every person who we asked to speak to said yes. And the most important thing for Joel Santos, the fantastic co director and myself Joe nagy our editor, the entire wonderful team skip Clark, the DP. All knowing that John and I know Al feels this way too, that John was able to hear Al to hear that course of voices gathered with his son Mike with his family and really get the chance to absorb how people felt what they thought. Three days before his passing. As you say, Jimmy, it's just an incredible piece of timing. We're obviously so sad about John's passing, but we're so grateful knowing that he was able to see it and that he liked it. What month did you do the interviews with John in person where he watched the screen and stuff like that? When did that take place? That was over the summer. We did that, that was the principal interview with John. We went up and visited him a couple of the subsequent times audio only. But that was over the summer and again Alan knows this well and Pleasanton as part of goal line productions, the production company that he owns. He has a sound stage there, the incredibly, that's the space where he watches NFL games on Sunday. And that we construct in our own video screen. And that was where we played the clips for him. Oh, that's fascinating. So that way we saw him in the dock. That's what he watches the games on Sunday. Al have you ever been there? Have you ever seen that set up? I have. Yeah. When I was with John, those 7 seasons, we take some ancillary stuff up there, but it's a great setup. He's got all kinds of it's like a sports for basically, right? The chairs and the big screens and John would be the kind of guy who on a Sunday after his retirement, which sit there and watch 7 games at once. He was like, I guess I Pereira is in the Fox studios trying to watch every game and weigh in on every rule that comes into play. So he loved it. I mean, John would get up early on Sunday on the West Coast, watched the 10 o'clock games, watch the games at 1 o'clock, one 30, and then the Sunday Night game, then, of course, be there on Monday night as well. He didn't miss anything. He loved it. Interesting. Now, I don't want to get more of it, but I have to just for a second. Tom, when news came that he passed them 24. Was that a complete shock? Did you hear? Did you hear anything about bad health leading up to it or complete stunner? No, I was stunned and not to say that and again, I know Al because of his friendship with John was aware of some of the health challenges that John had had in his life. He was 85 years old, Jimmy. But regardless of those being aware of those concerns, I was still stunned. The very first call I made was to Mike Madden his son. I was fortunate that Mike picked up. And Mike shared, again, this feeling, this gratitude that the family had, that John.

"Just blew them off the field. You know, just absolutely dominated. I mean, sunny is moving on to become the head coach at Louisiana tech, but that bowl game was interesting to me for a lot of reasons and leach went off at one point in a press conference. I saw, or it's like, hey, I love my time in Lubbock, love the people there and then went down the road. The four bad apples and then he really got into it. You know, so I think there was just a lot of subplots in that game, but that was a game. I pretty much watched start to finish. And you're sitting here thinking at some point at dawn on me, man, the SEC is about to go all in four. It just means more is just taking it on the chin. So our editors asked what do you make of this kind of thing? I would ask you, obviously, if Alabama and Georgia went on Friday in the big games, you know, whatever happens in the rest is kind of feels irrelevant. I mean, do you think that's true? It's just that they could go to a 9 as long as they get to the title. That's all that matters. They would definitely get a lot of heat if they went to a 9. And I think what stands out about this is that so Houston is a very good team. I frankly expected them to beat auburn. I don't know what that was a shame in 6 and 6 auburn losing to 11 and two Houston, but you know you're talking about Missouri lost army, Florida loss to UCF. Like you said Texas tech a team that had to fire its coach midseason that was 6 and 6 blew out. Mississippi state team that was a factor in the SEC this year. So these aren't the only one of those games, by the way, Stu where it went to chalk was actually the army game. Army was the favorite. The other ones were all and some of a couple of more like sizable favorites, right? Florida beat. Oh, Texas, Florida, UCF was another game in there. Yeah, Texas, Mississippi was a big favorite in that game. But look, yes, I mean, people can have their fun with that and they should, but we could still end up with it all SEC national championship game. That's the part that I know is, you know, it's the running joke, right? The SEC is still undefeated in ball games they actually care about. I don't know that that's exactly what happened here. But the conferences legacy of this season will be judged in large part by how those two teams do in the playoff. They've also got all this obviously playing Baylor in the sugar bowl. I don't think people pay as much attention to whether or not they won the gas perilla bowl. Did you know then you probably did, but like within like the last, I think 5 years, the SEC has had losing seasons in bowl play a couple times. Yeah, I remember in 2014 the year that I remember this because when the first it was the very first year of the playoff and when the very first playoff rankings came out, they had three of the top four teams and four of the top 6. And they ended up having a losing record in the bowls that year and they took a lot of heat for it. And understandably so. But the Georgia and Michigan game, frankly, is going to be seen probably as a referendum on those conferences because Michigan was the Big Ten champ. George I got blown out in the SEC championship game. What does it say if Georgia still wins that game or certainly wins it handily? I don't really get too caught up frankly in the year to year. The SEC is the best conference. They're still going to put the most players in the NFL. They're still going to sign the best recruits. They're still going to, even if somebody else does win the national championship this year, they've still dominated that event over the last 15 years or so. So whether the SEC goes how many do they have teams 11, 12? Yeah, so he and M dropped out. So the SEC, this is their record. I didn't realize this, but 2016, losing record, 2017, losing record, 2018, 6 and 6, 2019, 8 and two. I think they have 12 teams playing a share, I believe. There was going to be 13. So if they go four and 8 in their ball game well, it would be more than that because if Alabama and Georgia, you would get two bowl games in there. If one of them wins yeah, that's my point. Yeah. Okay. Well, let's just, I don't know, for me or 5, 11, whatever it ends up being 5 11 is not possible. 5 and ten, 5 and 9. It's not really going to change my opinion of the SEC one way or the other. You know, I think if the fact is, they still usually win the big games. The PAC 12 hasn't won those big games for the most part. And so they get the crap for it. The Big Ten you still, gosh, I can remember calling Jim Delaney after yet another New Year's Day where they went one in four or 5. And the other thing is the bolt selections are so random, right? The new year 6 is more best on best, but I mean, it's not like there's some automatic qualification rule for the Birmingham bull. It's completely random why Houston was in that game and not SMU or east Carolina or whatnot. So and maybe auburn beats one of those other teams. So have fun with it, but I wouldn't read too much into it. I would read into what happens on these semifinal games. There are now only two days away as we record this. John Hayes our producers is we talked about this offline how every year it seems like because of the calendar of the sport, you don't get the build up to those games the way you do in other sports is because everybody kind of goes into a break for the holidays and you're watching these lower tier bowls in the next thing. You know, all the playoffs are here. And also we're getting less, I would say insight into these from the Kazakh COVID they shut down all the media access. So you're not going to be reading stories from media day when the whole team is available on whatnot..

"Welcome to the audible presented by Trader Joe's. I'm Stewart mandel, joined as always by Bruce Feldman, Bruce, we have gone a little bit between episodes for various scheduling reasons. Now that we are back, the playoff is almost here and we're definitely gonna talk about it. But there was obviously a huge news in the football world on Tuesday, John Madden passed away at the age of 85, just days after fox ran this great documentary about him and you were had the great instinct to get a guest on today that everybody knows Tom rinaldi, who was one of the producers of that documentary. This is a project Tom has worked on for the past year. And so we had gotten a taste of it at our Fox off site for college football and NFL. Back in early August. I remember just getting really excited to see what they showed us. And the documentary first aired on Christmas Day and obviously a couple of days later, John Madden unexpectedly passes away. And so I thought who better to have on it to kind of put it all into context than Tom, who obviously are our audience knows well from his time immersed in college football now he's doing college football and everything else at Fox, but we appreciate Tom for joining us. To me, this is where it all starts. You see the 7 man slap. It's a greatest game in the world. Stockton with John Maddie hi everybody, I'm Vince Kelly along with John madman. Here with John Madden. To the 49 25 yard line. He's zipped that thing in here. He didn't put any touch on that. He put all the mustard on the front. Antonio Freeman used to catch the nose. There is a turkey. Yeah, and that turkey's so big and so many legs. And that's a two man job. Look at the size of this turkey. Now there is a turkey. Yo, we got some legs on there. I mean, here's a leg. Here's the leg, then we got three here. We got three here. Okay, now we have the Warren and what we do is everything's giving to the outstanding player we give the turkey leg. I want to drop the John man somewhere on it. You got it. You're up on top when you make catches like that. The front 7 the line and the linebackers of the forty-niners just whip this ram off and here comes the airplane. Holy what would the heck was that? You didn't know what they're doing? Look at their coming they were close to us but they were close to each other. They just went right by our eyes. They were my level I think. Where are they now? Let a replay of them? No. Holy moly. They're turning around. That's as close as I've been to an airplane in 18 years. Bill Belichick is the defensive coordinator of the Giants of this guy is a very good coach and they're talking about him as a possible head coach football league this year. The only 38 years old. Very intense. The core of it was was football, but when you can play it for a while and then go on with your life's work and it's still football, good luck is kind of the world. Okay,.

"Fine because it was never that serious. So did you regret being married ever? No, but I think to your advice. That's incredible question. When I so I did this girl for a long time before I was married, like going way back and to your point about not getting hung up on that person or trying to look for that person, other people that you date when you're post breakup, it's a 100% true, because you're getting your own head and then nobody's good enough and then you don't dated anybody for a long time, which is what happened to me. And so that's what I would best be advised to give for this person is don't do that. But here's the one thing I want to say about his trepidation of breaking people's hearts on Tinder is there's a good chance that they're also talking to a bunch of other dudes too. Like the fact that you're talking two to three, four girls, they're probably talking to three three four guys. So if you drop out, they're probably not gonna cry over it. Yes, that's a very, very good point. You can get really caught up in your own ego where you're like, oh, well, I have to let this one girl down. And, you know, you're like, no, actually, she's talking to like 7 guys. Just one of the 7 guys. You're on the harmony, your batch or like Christian mingo and it was almost like maybe don't ghost them, but it's pretty tender. So you're saying don't go on. Yeah, like a more serious dating website. Like Tinder's not a serious dating. eHarmony, be nicer, Tinder, just stop replying. Wild west. Tinder bumble, do whatever you want. We should have a dating person on to answer these because I'm getting sick of answering the dating ones. I just am. I've hit a creative peak. Or I shouldn't even call it a beak. Yeah. We've plateaued Kyle, well said. And you already asked you recycled the the question is to Rudy. Do you regret getting married? Who is that Cole Hauser? That question. You've got nothing left. You're recycling questions out. Well, it reminds me of rip a lot. So good jawline. To answer the question, no, I don't. Previously owned Yellowstone. All right, we'll talk to you guys on Friday. We got vilma and a replacing quarterback. We're not going to make it a draft, but I did some research on this. It's going to be pretty interesting. So we'll be back. Please subscribe. Thanks for calling Steve. I'm still a podcast ring..

"An incredible accomplishment. And no, he was joyful and happy. So he was joking and referencing back when he was there just to say the way that these guys think and the fact that he would even remember that at that Pinnacle moment is astounding. That's okay, that's crazy. I was in your defense sort of reading in the wrong way. No, that's pretty funny. That's funny that it was done on you that way. All right, I have an industry question. It's something as a college game day radio host was certainly different level of success than the host of the actual TV show. I traveled for 6 years. You know, I'd see you guys out on the road. And I would before our 7 hour radio show, a lot of times same location, different setup. I would go over to watch a TV show. I would do it to kind of get my adrenaline up, no one. I get to carry 7 hours of a radio show, right? And I like everybody on the show. You know, peak Fowler years. I just don't know if people truly understand what this guy was doing as a television host. He's a different and you want to talk people throw on built different all time Fowler is just different than everyone. And he is a monster. In the best possible way. So then I feel like the show is somebody who watched it in college. It was my Saturday routine, and then I'm on the road again. It's like my little radio gig over there, but I would go and you know, I'd be around everybody all the time to then after I was done with the radio part of it. And then I found myself consuming it a little differently because I was like, hey, I can't do another extra two hours while I'm going to be here on my couch for 13 watching games. But I felt like there was a push for the longer form storytelling and I think others would agree. I'm sure you would too, is that the storytelling veered towards sadness a lot. And I'm wondering, was that a conscious programming decision? Because the data told you, not that these stories weren't worth telling. So please don't take this the wrong way. I just felt like there's a lot of this now in the rundown for a three hour show. There has to be some research that says time spent watching is longer because you have to see the payoff the redemptive arc of these stories because it went from maybe one a week to it felt like a lot of it. And a lot of those stories were things you did an amazing job with, but I felt like that had to be partly a programming decision as well. Just a theory. It's a fascinating theory, but I think if it gives those architects of the show, the fitting at the time was brilliant. Respectfully, that was never brought up. Wow. Features are brought up. Here's what I would respectfully submit to you, that if you actually took a season's worth of.

"Like so many players far from Europe and other parts of the world doesn't even blink and he says, sort of nods and way to beat a beat and says different. Not better. He goes on to win the U.S. open that year. He goes on to win it. And I don't know if I did the trophy that year, the men's, I only did the men's once. I think I don't know if it was that year, but I know I was courtside. And he wins the U.S. open he's sitting like boxing Ryan. It's the only event where you don't leave. If you've lost, you stay in the arena. And that there's so much drama there, right? I mean, if your emotions are getting the best of you, you're burying your head and your towel, everyone is looking at the winner and the loser. And Wawrinka gestures me over. And I go as we're waiting for the stage to finally, you know, it's to be constructed or whatever. You know, it takes two, three minutes. And I got as if it congratulations and all he does is he pulls me inside and he just says different. Not better. What? What a time to not be like, where's that? Just sit back and enjoy it, man. You're not even one of the main guys. I mean, I'm not. That's an incredible accomplishment. And no, he was joyful and happy. So he was joking and referencing back when he was.

"Great times. Like you said, you had one opportunity to come, what did you make of August the Ryan versus what did you think versus what you experienced? Okay, well, you're a big part of that experience because I went with a college roommate who had been hounding me and he goes, hey, is there any way? And I was never a big, you know, sometimes your stories about other people. Maybe I should just start asking for stuff all the time. Like I would hear about something and be like, oh, I'm going to the World Series. I'm like, how did you get World Series tickets? They go, I just asked somebody and, you know, they gave them to me. And you're like, oh, all right. And then I don't know. I don't really ask in favors. And then my friend kept, it was like three or four years. He goes, hey, look. Let's make this happen. So he found a house out in one of those lakes and one of those neighborhoods, and we rented it with like four or 5 people, and then ESPN did hook me up, man. Because I went to him, is there any way I can do this? And they gave me the Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday passes because van pelt was like that move is get out of there on Saturday. Don't go to Sunday because trying to get out of there Sunday Mondays at disaster. And he goes in Wednesday so much fun and they gave me the passes, you can go in and out. I think back then up to 5 times. And then on top everything else, the double eagle club shout out where you pull your car in, I mean, look, we got totally hooked up. I would never have paid for this on my own. And then they host you and you just go and food and drink and video games and golf Sims and all sorts of stuff going on. And it was great for us because we were the youngest people by like 30 years. We were like, oh, hey, what's up with these rowdy young guys? We're like, we're in our 40s. So anyway, for to set the scene, you walk in and as high as your expectations are they can't be high enough because it exceeds them all. And the no foam thing and how they treat everyone once you're through the gates, they want you to feel that special. It's almost like, hey, you made it. You're here, and now that you're here, we want you to have the ultimate experience. And I'm not even the biggest golf cart. I didn't want to leave. I gave the Saturday passes to my college roommate because I'd gotten a couple less. And I said, hey, I know how important this is to you and some of the other guys. So I'm going to leave the Saturday passes to you. When I left, I didn't want to leave. I was kind of like, man, I shouldn't have done that because this is that much fun. And the best part is what I'm building to here is as we're walking in, we go to the practice teas, and there's Tom rinaldi. And my Friends, after we walked away after Tom goes, okay, what you need to do first. To walk the course backwards and understand. And then you're going to want to and he just Tom took us through this 5 minute thing and no one said a word, and then in particular Sully, the one guy's like, was that real? Is that really what he's like? I go, yep, that's what he's like. And it was unbelievable. So Tom, you were a big part of setting the tone for the entire week because my Friends were just blown away by your presentation..

"Learn more at Salesforce.com slash customer 360. I like a lot of you last night as I was trying to get myself coordinated watching the warriors at the nets. Let me first half tight. It looked like the nest in one pill a Lamarcus Aldridge because they were afraid of this small lineup that the worries have been thrown out there against teams. And then the war is absolutely put it on them. And the weird thing in that third quarter too is that curry and Wiggins both had four fouls. So I thought there was a chance that we were going to see some sort of run there from the debts. And that was not the case whatsoever. And this goes back to any of you that listen to me, I don't know. 11, 12, 13 years ago when I started doing podcasts at ESPN for the NBA today deal and I used to do tales from the couch back then where I would watch part of whatever it was. I think it would Tuesday night because it wasn't a stack, but I would try to watch all 7 games or something like that, or at least a good chunk of them. And then tell you everything I did and it was absurd, how much time I put into that, but the reason that I bring that up is that what was one of the early rules on that podcast, it's like the best team smash you in the third quarters. And right now, that's what the warriors have been doing. Kurt goldsbury, who were big fans of the net rating by quarter right now for Golden State going into last night. Is plus 31.7. That's that's so dumb. It's such a dumb number. It doesn't make any sense. And so Golden State I think 28, up 28, it could have gotten worse. The nets shut everything down. And by the way, when you say you don't like the nets and you want to dump on them and be like, oh, they wave the white flag. I like, come on. It doesn't mean anything. They probably weren't coming back, although Stan van Gundy I thought made a good point, but you also was one of the reasons why it feels like so many teams get sick of them. But he was like, you know, I really was late to let in the bench. He goes, I wanted to make sure we were definitely going to lose this game. And he's like, I know the end of the bench didn't really like me that much. I'm like, I'm not sure a ton of starters loved you either. But Steve Nash is just, I think as a player who's still a little closer to it as a former player is like we just don't have it tonight. And that's what the warriors are doing to teams. So let's run through some of the numbers. They're 12 and two. They've got the best point differential by pretty good chunk in the NBA. They're the number one defensive team by two points compared to the second place defensive team. The other good defense teams right now in the league, the clippers, Denver, which when, you know, I almost thought the other night because I was watching one of the nuggets games in Aaron Gordon was invisible again offensively, and I go, you know, Aaron Gordon's the guy that once you get him in your house, you're like, oh. Everybody wanted this guy really badly and then you immediately give him an extension. Now, defensively, I'll give it to him because you can switch. So Rudy's laughing at the background. So I have to just let you see something cool. Are you laughing at, but you know, there's two types of people in the world. Those that have watched Aaron Gordon a bunch and those that haven't. And there's one group that likes them a lot better than the other one. Yeah, I mean, I spent years talking myself into what Aaron Gordon could be. And the reality is he's just never gonna be what you think or what you want him to be. He's still a valuable player, but when he's running any sort of offense, he's just not that dude, and that's all right. Yeah, that's it. That's it. He didn't dramatically change to be offensively, which is the craziest thing because Denver with jokic, it's kind of the centerpiece of this whole thing. And seeing him get exposed in certain matchups, which would happen, I think to Chicago too. But I mean, we're talking about the top 5 defense teams in the NBA. It's Golden State, the clippers Denver's Washington and its Chicago. The Washington thing is fascinating because there's other people who argue that montrez is the reason why doctor rivers doesn't have a job anymore because in certain match if you can't have him defensively, even though this energy in his effort is rebounding and some of the stuff he does, like, you watch mantra some nights, you're like, everybody would want this guy on the team. I still think most teams would, but there's going to be matchups where it doesn't really work out. The same thing from jokic, certainly the same thing for vujovic with Chicago, but Chicago's backcourt is so good defensively, especially when you throw a Caruso into the mix. These numbers all make a lot of sense. But what Golden State is doing, this is all about effort and mindset. This is a remarkable basketball team. I'm not telling you that the best team. And we're going to get to that. I know the record says they're the best team. But what they are doing just with the way they approach night and night out those 48 minutes, this is you don't see this. That's the story is you don't see this in the NBA, a team playing like this. They're jumping passing lanes. They're switching with focus and communication. They are cutting. And I'm telling you if you're a basketball coach of young kids, you need to just have them all sit and watch a warriors game together and focus on one thing, don't focus on the shots going in or Steph doing his deal or the Gary Payton second dunks or any of that stuff or draymond focused strictly on if you keep cutting good things will happen. And it's just not cool to keep cutting all the time in the NBA. Cut, why would I do that? I don't want to do that. I'm awesome. I'm a max player. I fight over screen all night. I don't want to do that. And that's the people that don't love the NBA that point out that stuff. I'll tell you, I don't think every single defensive end is bringing an almost 70 snaps, and I have no problem with that. I've seen a few guys give away at bats too. The NBA probably gets a little bit too much shit. For some of the things that I don't love, but again, if that's who you are as a player and all the habits, it's for example the nets. Bembry and mills fighting like crazy over screens. The other guys? Nah. I'm not going to do it. So when two of the 5 out there are busting it. And I still think Durant's really good defensively when he needs to be. Hardin has no interest other than that one post possession where then the announcer is like, this guy defensively is much better than people realize. You're like, no reason. Golden State is showing up like this college team that watched hoosiers three times and a 14 seed plan like a three or something..
