"Would would go every other play for the Cowboys many, many years ago for Tom Landry. And it was maddening to see that James probably evolved a little past that, but, yeah, I don't know. I think it was Maura rotate Syria's type of thing there. I don't know if that's a real plan there, but Have this game and number two because what? Because 7 15 kick Tom Brady hasn't played good at night. A single time this year. All right, Tom Brady can't stay up late 7 15 on a Saturday night that has passed Tom Brady's bedtime, Okay, He's gonna be exploits news and in the second half I have the game all the way up in number two. What is number? I guess one of a number four for you. Number four for me would be the Cleveland Browns at the Pittsburgh Steelers. I say that even though I know Cleveland beat them last week, Cleveland stills not going in the facility. Their head coach is not going to be available for the game. I look for big Ben Roth Bliss, Berger and the Steelers took to roll in this game. I think That's number four to me. Mostly agree. Actually, I had that game all the way down at five. I feel so bad for the Browns now and then you go 18 years without making it to the playoffs. You finally get off the schneid. You win 10 games and what happens? You got to put you gotta play the first week without your coach. You gotta play without your head Coach. They're not even allowed to practice. Baker Mayfield today said it won't won't have an impact. What are you talking about? What he did not practicing is not gonna have an impact the week before a playoff game. Huge impact there, Baker boy, And that's the Sunday night game. By the way to Sunday night game, they flex that. Is it too late to flex that out of the Sunday night spot, All right, Number three. Number three and I've had real problems with this one. But I have number three right now, Uh, say the one that I want you to say, Say the number three would be Los Angeles at Seattle. That's what I have in the Jared Goff situation. He worked out today and we just heard on our radio station. He worked out He threw the ball. Well, uh, It's you see, these two teams play so much You know when this will be the third time they're playing this year. I think it's going to be a terrific game. I would give Seattle edge just because their home and gods coming up coming off that thumb surgery, But this is number three for me. I have this toward the bottom, and I bumped it up to three because it looks like Jared Goff, a actual professional quarterback, is going to play for the Rams. And what's up with your team? Man? You're the first half of the season. It was the Let Russ cook. They couldn't play any defense. But Russell Wilson was gonna win the M V P And then just midway through the season, they sweat they switched back and like, Oh, actually, we're gonna be a defensive team, Ruskin, a hand the ball off. What's up with you Rest forgot to cook, And then they got some running back. So that helped out a lot. Which version is better? I mean, that certainly there more exciting when it's the letter. I like watching rust. Just hook it downfield to DK Metcalf. But I'm also okay watching Chris Carson run for 30 Yards a pop. So Seattle just going to do that against the Rams, but it'll be fine. Just a 3.5 point favorite at home. I guess there's no real home field advantage here. But Seattle is is the just a 3.5 point favorite at home. We need a quick break, but we'll come back and get Ed's top two games. I feel like we got it. We gonna have the same top game right? Like we do? I don't know. Radio. Okay, 3605 90. We'll get to that in just a moment. 51283605 90 sports talk back in just a moment. January is New Year's resolution. Time. You have resolved to finally lose the weight this year, just like you resolve last year and the year before that, and the year before that, right? We'll make this the year that you do it for the final time with Soda s O ta. That is the weight loss program that I found a year ago. I started in mid January last year had a lot of weight a whole lot of weight to lose. And I did. I dropped £125 on the soda weight loss program started mid January. By September 1st. I had lost £125 of 7.5. Months. I understand my man Todd Jeffries in the morning here, Hey, got down to his goal weight in just a couple of months on the soda Weight loss program. It's a nutritional program. That's the name of the game. When you're trying to cut out that weight, it's about nutrition. And with so do you work with your own nutritional expert they play provide you with the plan. Support the goals. The accountability it's 100% over the phone as well. If you're staying at home right now, good for you. You could do this plan 100% over the phone and lose the weight. Quick.

"Join us for this hour of sports byline where we're GONNA be talking football pro football to be specific and I think you're gonNA. Find it interesting. One of the interviews that's in our archive of great interviews with the late Tom Landry I did want very last interviews with them before he passed away and what remains with me about that interview one of the questions. I asked him. was what was it like for you to experience a fall where you were not coaching? And he said to me, he said I never had a chance to see the leaves turn. And it was fascinating, so I've always wondered when a book was going to come out talking about Tom Landry, the definitive book about Tom Landry person as well as Tom, landry coach, Tom Landry, the player as well, and it finally has come out and later on in the hour. We're going to talk with the author of that Book Mark Rebel Sqi. It's a fascinating book about Tom, and it's called the last cowboy, a life of Tom Landry and. Two of his previous books have been about Howard cosell and Satchel page. So that shows you. He has great pedigree when it comes to taking a look at people in Sports, those that have done significant things in sports and in this book rebel ski reveals that even though Landry always showed restrained emotions and Christian faith, he was a man really of great reach and curiosity, and when not redefining the game by inventing the four three defense and. Rising the shotgun, connoisseur of art and fine wine, a world traveler, and also a collector of first edition classic literature. Now you would not expect that if you ever watched Tom Landry on the sideline. He certainly didn't look that. His stone face sideline visage was in fact, really a well deployed coaching tactic that would divide and mystify his players and opponents, who either loved or feared him again dichotomy all the way along both as a person, and as a coach, and then right after that we'll talk some football with a guy that was a general manager for a number of years. Mike Tannenbaum is. Is. GonNa. Kick off the our former general manager of the New York jets,.

Cowboys to move on without Jason Garrett

"Jason Garrett's time up as coach of the Dallas Cowboys Edward a reporting Jerry Stephen Jones have decided coach will not be part of the organization moving forward on Friday and paid Simmons on why this process lasted so long after the season to other Jerry and Stephen Jones have moved slowly out of respect for Jason Garrett you know they have a long history with him as a backup quarterback you to this is that coach a head coach's father was in the organization when Jerry bapa team as a scout and they finally concluded that phase of this process and that's going to end with Jason Garrett not being a part of the organization beyond his expiring contract and when exactly they make that announcement I thought sure what I've been told soon and that the next phase will have them moving into the process of interviewing candidates in the battle begin quickly after phase one is totally finished off yes was contract set to expire January fourteenth status with the team at issue since last February the cowboys didn't give a contract extension they missed the playoffs in twenty nineteen finish eight neighbor the four time in his tenure as coach Keyshawn Johnson on the job candidates and Jerry Jones himself he was on sports and we stand ready to make a decision on it there was the eight their long term in the obvious would clearly felt that their work you say while they waited till Thursday well the food that just won't really it just is so you kind of say okay take a deep breath we get back to the facilities we talk about a little bit we think about we pondered overnight we need or Thursday we meet on Tuesday we meet on Wednesday we have a conversation and we finally so you know women the best thing for us to do if not give the public what they looking for what they looking for me to do is be extremely mad and walk out of there on Sunday night if fire you on the tarmac so instead of doing that this call wait a couple days are you playing for the cowboys you're familiar with Jerry Jones and and and his thinking all what happens next now in this search for the next cowboys head coach I think a guy like Mike Zimmer Minnesota Vikings head coach could potentially be a candidate you say how could that be well I I II coach there in the deepest corner along try defensive coordinator for Jerry Jones is the bill Parcells fact either stay here they know what they're getting in that particular coach but also there's a young officer coordinator in cabin step band he this sitting there in Minnesota the Minnesota Vikings don't want to part ways with him they don't want him all of a sudden start to get interviews and become a category another team so I would be surprised if somehow might dimmer wind up being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the cabinet she takes over as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings so a lot of story lines this call come about here over the next with date but I think this time around you will get the head coaching job right where the coach may be season one more before we go do you think that at this point Jerry Jones is ready to surrender more control to a head coach now then he has been willing to in the past as bill Parcells left and and I want to turn this on your stamina I am right now status is not a defense Jerry Jones was some what he is and even as well as we clay as well as Jerry junior what is your you Jones gone wrong with that organization other than the head coaching hire that's a very good question that's very good everybody everybody everybody said here you're you're here the one on that team thank you for calling the latter team for the National Football League I would I would argue and say that their top five channels it is four tally dole is a National Football League the problem is that head coach because you're you're not holding the plate yeah well that gives the player is a free pass for having innate need season the talent on the field didn't win enough games he and Garrett will finish as the second longest tenured and second most winningest coach in team history Tom Landry a record of eighty five and sixty seven the wonders to playoff games unable to get past the divisional round Mike wells Myron Medcalf on Freddie Fitzsimmons the Dallas Cowboys there you know they draw attention but the the the days of being America's team and wanted to be part of what is age and it's not the same anymore it is not the same strictly because of what you have to deal with away from just coaching of football team is not simply you know put together a strong staff the coaster brakes of Amari Cooper Ezekiel Elliott and dak Prescott it's also having the answer constant questions from your boss the owner Jerry Jones deck could become a headache when you're you can't simply just focus on the task of putting your team in the proper position the try to have success there's a side show that comes with it and some people are built or not built to be able to deal with that so you got to find the right coach who is not only a great Exynos guy but somebody who's mentally strong enough to handle the constant you know looking over the shoulders and the pestering of your boss meddling in the inside of things wonder why things are not going well or to give us suggestions on what you should be doing that's not something easy that everybody can handle that type of situation well it and not everybody wants it and that's why I think a lot of these cultures your Matt rules related rallies urban Meyer's why except that to me if you're not going to modernize the structure of your organization so that your owner can do what every other owner does and take a backseat and not be this forward facing figure who's hosting its own press conferences after the game sometimes undermining the head coach then then how can you expect to attract a great candidate bomb out rule no one eight I'm leaving Baylor I got a chance to build something there if I'm leak in Raleigh I'm in Oklahoma and every year I get a chance to go to the college football playoff leave in Oklahoma where I can coach for another decade at least about continue to succeed ever murmur Meyer I'm not leaving LA or on the TV analyst making good money watching a lot of football injuries bouncing around the country see a lot of teams to go to Dallas where I've got a deal with Jerry that's why I think it's going to be difficult if Jerry Jones wants to continue to be Jerry Jones I don't think Mike he's going to end up with any of the top candidates identifying potential replacements Bobby carpenter and fox college football reporter Bruce Feldman gas on Freddie impede Simmons Stephen Jones Jerry Jones offered that coaching job urban Meyer she would say I think that's a hard job to say no urban probably wouldn't be needing to be for another year is that all you but who knows enough the big job at the glamorous job and remember the nose you know damn owns his courage and damn ongoing expound acted it all back thank god yeah I was supposed to do the oil itself journal part of mine and to buy that it was offered so you're going to want to meet your need to guide it was a proven track record we've done it before who's been in the playoffs the only guy that I look at the newest hires cycle that's really available is Mike McCarthy and it's free thank god I'm not that I'm not the biggest Mike McCarthy stand the world but he's the only guy that it holds no one Barty and that is the only thing that Jerry Jones once he is getting older is that you know you if you spend more time on this earth that he's going to spend has the last was starving if you get that oracle Marty troche with them of the order would love to put it in there Mike you've done that you chose to leave "The fact is there really was and I mean tell you or not but the first I I was about nine hundred pages he was a very saturated gentlemen that no but the the kind nobody ever knew existed listed. And when you read this book you'll see that he was very much a human being but he he was very much a man who knew how to control every single the facet of his personality. One of the things that I've always found an interviewing people is that whatever they turn out to be mark it's because of where they started and and how they grew up in the case of Tom Landry he grew up in mission Texas. Tell me a little bit about him growing up there and how it might have molded him. Admission Texas today's almost like a shrine. Not only at Tom Landry buzzes. Father Ray Landry. who was the fire chief? There for about fifty years taught that Sunday school at the church where the family worshipped every Sunday and probably the town's most beloved human being ever ever come through town and later on when he retired. This is Ray Landry now. Father the newspapers did stories about about him. That didn't even mention his son. How about that? You GotTa be pretty beloved in in that town to overshadow your son if your son's under the name is Tom Landry. That's kind of town. It was it was very small very parochial town. Everybody knew each other There were no secrets. Landry's high school coach. Bob Martin right next door and in a basement apartment. It was like it was almost like mayberry R F D. It was it was it. was that kind of a small town. And that's those are the values that stayed with landry throughout his whole life and still mostly not. His father was a very gregarious. Galleon guy very outgoing but by his mother ruth who was just like Tom very very very contained very close lipped. But oh I've had those those strong human values that she passed down over son. It's a fascinating time if you ever go there because every every street almost. There's some sort of shrine Tom. Landry toys father. Raymond injury. Of course they have statutes and they have plaques all over the place as you just alluded to you but the other thing is he was a pretty good quarterback in high school wasn't he. He was a quarterback. WHO's a fullback? Defensive Guy was great natural athlete and he won headlines as you'll see them in the book in the in the local mission newspapers for being the hero he was the guy everybody nobody turned to and it was obvious that he would have a football career and he did at university at the University of Texas. Unfortunately it was interrupted by his World Award to military service. And that two story as you'll see. He cheated death a number of times as a as a fighter pilot in the war and table every single one of those missions. The Way You handle coaching without without ever losing control or even betraying any kind of fear whatsoever you can't be traced here in the cockpit of a of a bomber plane that going down over Europe and the middle of the night. You got something you you've got something in your personality analogy that will serve you well in life and of course the war did touch his family with a loss of sibling. Yes brother Robert. His older brother if anything the athlete of the family he was the captain. Football Team He was older than Tom He. He was the first to go into the war. He was a fighter pilot. Just as Tom with.

"Who's in Texas? Welcome to after hours, CBS sports radio. Good morning, Amy. How are you? Thank you. My grudge goes back least three decades and it was February of nineteen eighty nine. When? Laugh at yourself. Even saying it out loud. Well, Jerry, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, any fired Tom Landry broke my heart. And so, I am now Texas Green Bay Packer fan because they can't just fire the coach. They need a board of directors to do it. And we kind of fared well as of late against the Cowboys though, although you're, you're coach, your recent coach got blindsided. I mean, he got fired in the middle of season for heaven sakes, and that, that wasn't the classiest moment ever by the Green Bay Packers. I would say, well, true, you know, and you gotta take the good with that. But, but I'm still holding on to Alan because I as a kid living in Texas islands of big Catholic band 'till dairy still gives plenty of material to laugh about because hopefully son daughter can do better with. Even though he did good with three Super Bowls. But then he fired the guy that got him those right? I actually remember that I was a kid, too, and my brother grew up as a big Cowboy's fan. You remember that time back in those days, the Cowboys were on TV every weekend didn't have NFL network exempt cable options. There was no red zone. And so it was the Cowboys truly America's team in every week, you would see them. And so my brother loved the Cowboys. And I remember when Tom Landry got fired. He was so upset. And we were stunned. We loved him. We thought he was really classy, and we loved his hat. And obviously the way that he carried himself on the sidelines was so different. So I definitely do remember that. And if it makes you feel better, Paul, you're not the only one that's still holding on to it because I've had many other mentions of Tom Landry on social media tonight. We'll have a good weekend. Thank you. Eight five five two one two four two two seven in fact. Tracy just sent me, this tweet a law radio Jerry Jones and the way he fired Tom Landry have never liked him or Cowboys football, four that Andrew bogusch in theory in studio. I feel like a sports fans. We tend to hold grudges more than maybe the average human. They're like, I guess we can be pretty begrudging as human beings and other walks of life. But do you have a sports grudge? That's nasty, not you personally, but one that you think of sports grudges, if you like give you some example. Yes, please do that. So Aaron Rodgers holds a grudge against every other team that didn't draft him. Remember, he got passed over to number twenty four thunder fans still holding a grudge forever against Kevin Durant, because he left and went to Golden State that Sonics fans holding a grudge against the owner who moved them to Oklahoma City that kind of thing. Well, the worst thing I've ever seen. On this line is a hockey one when the Rangers brought Mark Messier back at the end of his career after they sent him to. I guess, being couvert I at the press conference with Messier coming back. He and I guess it was Dave Checketts who was a MSG executive at that time. They literally buried a hatchet like they had a hatchet in like a turtle chino case, a fish tank, and they shoveled little things on top of a hatchet, because things were okay again, because they had buried the hatchet. So, yeah, there's that I was thinking, just as you're mentioning New York. How about James Dolan and Charles Oakley? A good one. Pretty deep city edge there. Rational ones. Michael Jordan, making up reasons to be met absolutely like nobody's because he needed some kind of motivation that insane level of competitiveness. And like being an assassin as always amazed Koby Bryant would do that to play with a chip on his shoulder and have some reward you just say nothing. A little bit -absolutely nothing. There have been some really good ones mentioned on social media, as well at see Bartman, has come up right because. No, it's absolutely Steve. Bartman fault that the cut didn't make the World Series in three. Kobe reminds me of a good one. This is a personal one, but I went to school with smush Parker who had a very checkered NBA career and Kobe to this day. And think of everything that Kobe's been involved with Kobe hates, smush, Parker and Kwami Brown who are with him on the Lakers one season. He hates them with a passion and it means absolutely nothing. But those two young men, apparently broke Kobe Bryant's in one NBA season. And in nineteen he is still it's been a decade and he's still has not forgiven them. No, we hang onto them for absolutely no reason. Because it fuels our fire. We can't let it go. All right. Good morning to you. Happy friday. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence. Here's our latest sports update. And here's Andrew..

"The afternoon folks will be talking with general manager Brian Goudie Kunst that'll be at three twenty today. I'm WTMJ Steve's can feed you got some stuff going on. Yeah. I was going to play a little bit of that. Matt leflore? I heard a part of it. We were getting ready for the show, but the energy of a new coach excited I work with Aaron Rodgers. I heard that part of it as a small town guy from this neck of the woods. So he's amid west kind of a cat. I was talking to Doug yesterday about this. I asked Doug if him and era writers are going to be buzzer. But four years apart, and he got doesn't really matter. They have to have to have a good working relationship, but the young coach phenomena, which is consuming the NFL. I think that's the way it's going, and maybe that makes some of these young players feel more comfortable, and maybe. Let's hope perform better well coaching is young man's game. Now, I mean gone are the days of bud grant on the sidelines. The Tom Landry with a suit and the fedora kind of cross field. The game has changed man. You know, jump on board because the trains left the station on that. And you hope that that injection of life and energy connects with younger players but Aaron Rodgers as far as his NFL career is concerned. He's not a young player. So I wanted to know how you how you reach a guy like that. That's gotta set is way. I think as we all get older, we all get a little bit more set in our ways. Stop looking at me. And. Garages. He's kind of he's got a set in his ways as an NFL player. It's going to be interesting. And and I always loved the enthusiasm of new coach. I think the fans love it as well. But as you said, and as every sports guy in the country is so you just don't know what's going to happen. There's there's players you have to assemble into this new mix, and they have talented Green Bay. Whether it's talent to get to the playoffs. That's the big question. I think they have the talent to get to the to the playoffs. They have to stay healthy. They were beset by injuries in a lot of areas. Most notably think on the well to areas that offensive secondary in the offensive line. And if you can build some depth in those two areas I like the Packers chances, but they've also you have to have a quarterback and head coach slash play caller. They gotta be on the same page. And clearly that was not the case last year. Call me optimistic and I'm an optimistic guy. That's my resolution for twenty nineteen be more positive be more often. Because we always said that Steve's Kapiti is such a negative. So everybody says it's really kind of awkward how we've all been talking about that window into the world that didn't know that. Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones ready to make some noise

"You feel and and President Trump is convinced you and a lot of you echoed what he said that guys that are Neely are being disrespectful to the country to the flag until the military. Even though that's not the case, even though they've told you why they're Neely, Jerry doesn't care scale all care about is money. And if it doesn't make him money or he feels it might stop him or prevent him for making absorbent amount of money because he's making money, but Jerry field, this might stop him in some way because he's still gets. Pushback this, even though this policy might go in the playoffs Steele might be allowed to kneel. At least I was pushing back. He can always fall back on that and the fans will stay with Jerry. One of them saying it was just the league, voted him and this what the players are allowed to do. So he'll always have that in his back pocket. If he loses the final, the final vote. But I am so disappointed, but I'm not surprised here reacted like this. So I'm going to reiterate to everyone wants more. I know Jerry very well. You could say all too well, I spent literally hundreds of hours interviewing him for three books that I wrote on the Dallas Cowboys one on the Tom Landry Cowboys. One on the Jerry, Jimmy Cowboys. One on the Jerry Switzer Cowboys that somehow in spite of itself won the Super Bowl. I don't often agree with Jerry's politics or his stances on lots of things, or he's worldview or sort of his perceptions. But I do respect one thing about Jerry, Jerry is who Jerry and he will let you know between your is exactly what he thinks and he doesn't care what you think. He's just going to tell you what he thinks and that I do respect that. He just is going to lay it right on the line that my players who collect the checks that I saw are going to literally toe that line as in, they're going to stand for the national anthem with their toes. On my line, it's my, it's called Jerry world. This guy nickname, but with toes on the outta balanced line along their sideline, your toes, you're going to be up on the line. You're not going to be back on the bench. You're going to stand. This is this is a decree from above in what. Did he call the big media session that he did yesterday, he calls it his state of the union, his annual state of the union as training camp opens out in Oxnard, California, not all that far from where we're sitting right now because he is the president owner and operator of the Dallas Cowboys. And he operates. Well. Argue he operates that way because these are his decrees for this year. This is how he feels about the end. He doesn't care what any other owner things. He doesn't care about the ongoing dialogue between the legal fishing, the players association. This is his policy. And originally it was said that each teen could sort of operate its policy the way each team one voted on his Gill. Okay, but, but within the confines of those rule, right, which was insane to me if you want to protest, you can stay in the locker room, right? Neil Bryant them. You can save you if you come out and you have them. But if you don't want to, you can stay in the locker. It was insane. Wasn't gonna work, and now it's not going to work because they're back to the drawing board trying to come up with a new idea. But in the end with Jerry, he's not going to hide what he thinks. He's not going to camouflage what he thinks and he's not going to do what Mike Brown had just done is the owner of the Cincinnati Bengals the day before, what am I Brown say? I was in St.. Acted by the league office not to comment anymore about our anthem. Paul's because there is ongoing dialogue. Well, that's the politically correct thing. Say I have to stand down. That's what might Brown said the Jerry standout. Did he care what anybody else said? What not improbably league wanted the owners not to comment because if they don't comment, maybe someone else won't comment, but we know that's not gonna stop when there's controversy swirling around daily. So I want to be very clear about this, but this is the one thing I appreciate about Jerry Jones. You know exactly who he is, who he's not..
