"All things considered from NPR news. I'm Ari Shapiro and I'm Mary Louise Kelly. The Constitution guarantees the freedom of assembly and worship. But what if a symbol ng to worship endangers public health? The Supreme Court ruled on this topic again today, temporarily siding with the California church that does not want restrictions on singing and praying indoors. In an unsigned ruling, the justices ordered a lower court in California to reconsider a previous ruling a previous ruling that upheld a state restriction on some church services to limit the spread of covert 19 well, joining us for an update on where all the stands, let's turn to NPR's Tom Jordan. Hey, Tom. Hi Mary Louise Hay. So this is actually the second time in a week right that the court has ruled on this issue states restricting churches in the name of covert prevention. There was another ruling in a New York case just a few days ago. Yeah, That's right, Mary Louise, And in that case, the court ruled that some restrictions that were being imposed on religious services in New York were just too extreme. That state had set up these color coded zones and in the red zones where the coronavirus risk was highest, no more than 10. People were permitted to attend services. And in orange zones, the limit was 25. This applied even in churches that conceit more than 1000 people. Now those limits had already been suspended. But the court made clear that those particular restrictions by design were excessive and arbitrary and unfair to those churches. Okay, So stay with this first ruling for another moment Is it Is this good news for church leaders who would like to lift restrictions on their worship services that people may have seen that story about the pastor in California, who pulled out his cell phone during a service and and read from that New York ruling? He read from that ruling, and everybody applauded. And he said, Basically, we have one. But I think he was jumping there to an unwarranted conclusion. That's certainly the view of at least one law professor. I spoke with today. This is John in a zoo at Washington University in ST Louis. He writes often on this issue here is what he told me. If you're a 5000 person church, gathering in person without masks and violation of a state order, this rolling does absolutely nothing to help your cause. Nothing to help your cause. Tom Tom. Why is that? Well, it's because that really last week in New York did not say that worship services cannot be restricted. Professor. And as you told me, the question is really how to restrict them. He for one thing's religious liberty, they just worship qualifies as an essential activity. The question, he says, is whether These restrictions violate that First amendment. You referred to to freely exercise your religion. Here's what he said. And in many, many cases, this will be of discretionary decision by state and local officials. The court has weighed in and said at some extremes. Their constitutional violations. But in most cases, this is going to be a gray area. That's going to be the decision making of local officials so they'll still have some freedom to impose limits and public gatherings in churches as well as in other places for the sake of public health. Okay, So that brings us up to today. This second ruling that pertains to churches in California. Is it consistent with the New York Rolling Yeah. This referred to a lower court that had, as you suggested, upheld some restrictions on church worship Church in Pasadena objected to no avail. But the Supreme Court said today that that that lower court should reconsider its ruling in light of what the court ruled last week that restrictions can't be too extreme, and they can't single out churches for special treatment. The backdrop to all of this, of course, is that we're seeing record hospitalizations and deaths from covert 19. As you've reported on this, Tom, where are most churches on how to handle the pandemic? The important thing emphasize Mary Louise is that the vast fast majority of churches are actually following the public health guidelines and either not meeting in person at all, or in a very limited way. Just by chance. I was listening this morning to assume conversation on this very issue. It featured Francis Collins, director of the National Institute of Health. He's also someone who is quite religious and takes his Christian faith seriously. He made clear in that conversation. That this is really not the time to go back to in personal wish. Churches. Gathering in person is a source of considerable concern and has certainly been an instance where super spreading has happened and could happen again, Eh? So I think most churches really ought to be advised if they're not already doing so to go to remote virtual kinds of services. And Mary Louise. Dr. Collins himself is a regular churchgoer, he says. That's what his church has done. All right. That is Tom Jordan. He covers faith and belief for NPR. Thank you, Tom. You bet. In the last minute push. The Trump Administration has set a date to auction off drilling rights in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The sale will be January 6th as Tegan Hamlin with Alaska's Energy desk reports that could complicate President elect Bill Biden's promised to prevent drilling in an area that has been protected for decades. The lease sale could cement one of the Trump administration's biggest priorities and expanding oil and gas development. But conservation and tribal groups quickly pushed back. They point out that Thursday's announcement came before the end of a comment period in the previous stage in the leasing process, and they say it's another example of the Trump administration. Cutting corners. You're one mile from the finish line and you decide to take a shortcut is what the screens to me and you hope you don't get caught. That's Matt Newman, a senior staff attorney at the Native American Rights Fund in Anchorage. He represents three glitch in tribes who live near the refuge and oppose drilling on the coastal plain because of risk to the migrating caribou that give birth there. The Gwich'in name for the coastal plain translates into English is the sacred place. Where life the gift. And it is not placed in their points of view that is compatible with or can coexist with boiled development. The glitch in conservation groups and 15 other states have already filed lawsuits challenging the Trump administration's environmental review of development in the coastal plain, which is also home to polar bears and other wildlife. In Kaktovik, the only community inside the coastal plain. Some indigenous Inupiat residents greeted Thursday's announcement with enthusiasm..

"Was taken but also because it doesn't take that much time during the day Eh and the other tip I would say relationship building is that everyone can do really easily a lot of us go. I don't have time for networking. I don't have time to reach out to people. I don't have time for this. I can't do that every day. Around let's say ten. Am Your time whatever that might be in whatever timezone opened up your phone hit the text message button. Scroll all the way down onto the bottom. That's where those people are that you haven't talked to for like three years and you're like Oh that was Tom. We met at that conference where I was speaking Hughes a nice guy we had lunch. I never really followed up after that. You can send them a text message and I call this connect four because I do it with four people a day and I'll reach out and be like. Hey Tom Jordan harbinger here. We met at Finn Con in in San Diego in two thousand sixteen. How are you? I realized we never kept in touch. I just had a kid. What's the latest with you and I send it? And now he knows my name Kino's I know his name so it's not a mass text. I told him where we met. And then I said what's the latest with you. I shared an update about me so that an opening the door and now he's getting the idea that okay okay. Hopefully I'm not selling anything but I'm never asking them for anything. Yeah just trying to get an update and see what they're up to and you'll only get like a fifty percent response rate but that's fine. Imagine you're doing this. Four people day to people respond to it five days a week. You're reengaging ten people in your network that you would literally have never spoken to again probably in your entire life and so if you do that every week every single month you're reengaging hearing from forty new people and it. It doesn't mean you're going to be best friends. It doesn't mean whatever but what will happen is one of those people or so every month will say hey. Did you say that you lived in such in such area. I'm actually going to be down there. Do you WANNA grab dinner after my conference or what happens more for me. is they'll go. Hey do you still speak on stages and I'll go. Yeah and they'll go great great. I'm about to pitch for my national sales convention and your top of mind because I texted them like three weeks ago. Do you think fifteen grand is a good budget. And I'm like okay. I only have to fly like San Diego you go all speak fifteen grand like Scher in so I get all these really cool opportunities as a result or they'll say hey. Do you WANNA come on my podcast. Just realized that you just texted me the other day yeah. I can't believe I didn't call you so you get all these opportunities because people remember who the hell you are finally and you remember them and you start to realize that these relationships that were dead or doormen can be reactivated with text message. And this is time that you'd normally waste looking at youtube or instagram right. You'd be like checking your tweets instead Ed. Now you're reengaging a friend that you haven't talked to in years and it's highly valuable to do that hundred percent. Yeah I think we've all fallen out of the habit now you obviously but most of I have fallen out of the habit of keeping in touch and with Internet. It feels like we're connected but were like more disconnected than ever. I think these are really great tips on not passively consuming but actually engaging and creating in your own way and anybody can do that whether you have a social media following or not total with your actual network they do have. Ah Yeah. It's a network that you have whether because a lot of people like I delete my taxed. Find US Facebook Messenger. Whatever like don't split hairs use linked in? I don't care texting first thing is better because people will read it if you send emails could get caught in spam people might be like. WHO's this delete? If you're texting them. They know that you gave them your phone number and they gave you there. It's a does that mean when you first exchanged numbers. Do you write text people right away in your life. You text them right away. Because what do you say great meeting you today Jordan Harbinger Save if my number because they call you want them to because if you attach from an unknown number of you're like hey it's Tom I don't know who that is. You have to use your full name because what you don't want is hey. Hey it's Jay Jay okay. I know seven hundred people could be so then. They're going to ignore you because if they go. Oh I don't know who it is. It's embarrassing but but what's not embarrassing is just being like delete and go on with your day. Thank you so much and working people find you before he leaves sure. The podcast is the Jordan Harbinger. Show and I'm at Jordan Harbinger Mgr on twitter and instagram. You'll find everything. The show knows the links definitely try out the course. I've been meaning to check that out. I've heard you talk about all the time. Delay Delay. Procrastination Yeah Yeah. But it's definitely something we all need anything. It can help us so much.
