"Sean connery and the gun. Barrel iraqi jet pack a fake funeral. James bond punching a woman bonds french connection cryptic latin inscriptions. That's on a chapel wall water cannons shooting the bad guys from the aston martin db five and of course a fight. These are some of the things will examine as we look into the pre title sequence in the one thousand nine hundred sixty five james bond. Movie thunderball hi. This is dan sylvestry. Tom izzo and spy movie navigator dot com. Please join us as we're cracking the code of the pre title sequence in thunderball. So let's go. We see for the first time in the gun barrel. It's not bob. Simmons the stunt guy. It's sean connery goldfinger. It's fun and from this point on. We are actually going to see bond in the pre title sequences in the gun barrel and not a stunt man one a concept they needed to change the clip here as the aspect ratio for thunderball change from the previous movie so they couldn't reuse the clip that they had from the prior movies. One thing we haven't mentioned yet in our pre title sequence podcast series the origins of the gun barrel. We have mentioned the prato secrets in the nineteen. Thirty four million chrome passion in an earlier podcast. But we haven't yet talked about the ending to the nineteen th remove eight the great train robbery which ends with a gunman pointing the gun. View and firing. Some people think stain also influenced the golden barrel sequences that these things were around decayed and decades before bond was even written. So that's kind of cool and it actually is and then when you hear about how it was made it sound like it might have been in the back. Somebody's mind but when morris bender put that together he was just playing around and said. Hey if i shoot through this gun. Barrel i can do this. Pretty cool stuff. We had mentioned the pre tuchel secrets in the nineteen thirty four movie crummy that passion in an earlier podcast. We've seen in the first three. James bond ian production movies two circles that cross the screen and by the way. I have always thought those were the double. Oh that's just my take on it. I don't know it looks like it should be the double o but you're in thunderball when the gun barrel ends the gun barrel finally more to the first seen in the pre title sequence it doesn't just fade out like it did in the other movies it actually shows us part of the first seen within the gun barrel. First time this has happened. So this is kinda neat. This is cool and a great addition to the series and the circle shows the initials here j. b. and as the camera pans backwards it shows. Jb's blazoned on a casket. What again for about twenty seconds. We must think this is james bond dead again. It's the fourth movie by anne productions and his dead again in the beginning they just love killing them off right at the beginning of the movie. Yeah we remember from russia with love. Of course it wasn't him. It turns out but wow i don't know this makes me queasy and i don't know what to do because bonds debt already and i'm thinking wait a minute. There's another twenty one movies. How can this be. We know that. Now we're back then back then you didn't know it so there are some advantage the being in the future but this makes me queasy. I got bonded out on. This makes me want to have a separate coffee. Because i gotta wake up here. 'cause bonds dead. I'm just too nervous. Hang on oh. Hey we find a delicious coffee for you. By the way i mean. This is spy coffees and you can find them at spy coffees dot com and our listeners. Get twenty percent off with roast. Like spymaster dark rose or double agent medium. Rose which. I'm drinking right now or agent blend light roast in whole being ground and even some k cups make clandestine trip to spy coffees dot com and use the spike code. Sh- spy nath espy y. n. Av and you'll get twenty percents off at checkout all right. let's get back. I think i'm awake. We see as a funerals ending in the small beautiful french chapel. James bond on this inside balcony speaking with a woman who turns out to be his french six connection. I'm pleased to create. Is a lighter setting for these pre title sequence. Of course last two films been set at night giving a dangerous about ding atmosphere. This one feels more normal more inviting the viewer into a lot lighter feeling except it's a funeral the funeral the funeral with j. b. on it was really for jacques pouvoir who was specter number. Six who bond reveals murdered two of his colleagues. Now i'm wondering what is james bond doing at jack. Bu vars funeral it makes me wonder why a healthy. Why is he there. Now we don't offer killed to double o. agents or colleagues. Perhaps from the cia or the french bureau. Those french contact who's credited as mademoiselle the port says at least you've been saved. Air filter removing passed away. And you sleep so they told me it comes out. The bond is disappointed. He didn't get the kelham himself to son disappointed. You didn't killing meal such move on murder two of my colleagues. So maybe i'm listening to this thing too and i'm thinking maybe the french contact just told us what bond is doing there. In france he was going to kill ovar and maybe move are found out in states. This whole thing or something. I don't know yeah. If this is but buddha's funeral it looks to me like somebody beat onto it. She says he may have died in his sleep. But given that this is somebody bond was going to be going after. I kinda doubt that somebody probably be to it.

Izzo thinks it's gay browns fault and he is letting them know it and they're going added a going into the tunnel and so we got emotions. Running high in michigan state. Had an eleven point lead by as many as fourteen in this game but with under forty seconds left. Ucla within three. That's hockey has again. He misses the free throw. But he's gonna wind up getting back right about here. He goes close but free throw ties the game at seventy seven in the final. Half minute again. this is a game. They were down by fourteen. Sports would miss. Ucla a chance to win three one for the game. It's no good so to overtime. They go and the old team would belong to the bruins up three with under a minute. "What we call don't have a split and and I know the caches Winston has seven turnovers right okay I get that we had six assists that isn't good when did the ends we go back to our pregame chat with Tom Izzo when I ask about slow starts he later ran on cash's shoulders to make sure this seems then I came out sluggish and some of those seven turnovers were really silly some some office of calls that were just seen some of those travels I mean I can think of at least for that just weren't good call so I agree with you Cassius Winston was on him tonight played great today he made a half court shot have cords out isn't exactly right is the rate was crazy did in the first half but every time Maryland made little wrong when a guy we got a forty two stars and then then the rest is history that's right so by way put Indians he why should we drive the motor city be sure to check out the warming lined up a Chevy Detroit dot com well we're now being joined by head coach Tom Izzo Tom what can you say what a great win on it was a great win we found almost found a way to I don't know how to turn it over at the end but it wasn't for that I thought we played about as well as we could play with a lot of guys make plays I thought rocket watts and and what we call two freshmen the number leave a full job you know Xavier caches were really good early and made some good plays Erin Henry was as solid as you needed to be if it wasn't for those foolish turnovers and a bad defensive plays in a god.

"Oh yeah it's courtside with Greenberg and Dockage Aka the world's greatest podcasts. And before you didn't I want to thank everybody. That is downloaded downloaded as everybody. That has listened To make this a very popular podcast. I don't want my phone to ring So we'll turn that off. But the coach whisper. Seth Greenburg along with me. Dan Dockage. We're going to get right into it. Seth North Carolina Duke unbelievable than North Carolina jumps right back and gets it done like you said last night kind of a tournament weekend for both teams actually all teams kind of those two teams. Yeah tell you what the that game was ridiculous and you know we we talk about fifty fifty the last hundred games exact. Same number of points Carolina coming in with a losing record by the way shout out Carolina fans. They showed up a game day. We do appreciate with that. It helps it makes it more exciting as a game when the game started. It was like Vintage Carolina basketball when it started a lot of us. Did it up and transition playing the head of the Defense Lisa attacking playing through the post to the offensive glass. They did everything they could do. The first step excluding defend carry but the ending was luck. I mean I don't know how they're great rivalries I don't know how many rivalries end in in the way that these do Carolina Games end because there was no way in the World Carolina. I should've lost that game. They missed free throws then they can stop the basketball so do came right down to two seconds later did then. They'd Bangle show off the free throw in and lose a little focus and trae Trey Jones makes that play. I mean the number of crazed plays if you tried to recreate that the odds of that happening again. We're probably the the same as the odds of these guys playing one hundred times being fifty fifty and scored the same amount of points. Would you agree. You'll God yeah. Yeah the the odds of both or none saying Yeah Trey Jones man. He was good and I don't think he's a closer but he was good at the end of that game. I I've said before based on hate North Carolina and Duke is great but based on Hate Louisville and Kentucky. Talk to me was always been my favorite rivalry because they're literally insane and they go after each other one coach coach at both places. And all that kind of thing. But I gotTa tell you based on Games based on endings. There's there's nothing like Duke in North Carolina. It's almost like the gods have said we deemed this to be crazy every time and I think you know. Jay said it always delivers and all. And he's right like not only does it always deliver. It always delivers in spectacular fashion. And let's be honest. trae Jones was great until he shot an Air Ball. And then you know what there he was well Picking it up laying it in and set do do you agree with this. Bad teams find a way to lose. Could that apply to Carolina in this game yet. Do I think that I think at the end of the game. I mean you find a way lose you step up to Lonzo. Makeup of free throws games over boom history. And you got guys stepping up and barely hitting the rim. You gotta find a way to just slow down the ball. Aw a little bit so that you can't just come flying down and I think in the back of their minds I mean like you and I've had teams that have been like that. It hasn't happened a lot of Carolina there has to be self doubt that energy that enthusiasm they played with. We've got a thirteen or so instead of just finishing it off like a good team. A team that expects to Windows there was some self doubt. And there was some place that you kinda head-scratching plays and just you know like look. The end of the game run a bulletin. Your hands is be strongly to basketball. Limited one shot contain the ball transition so that you can force an extra passing stay in front and then when you get filed step up to the line and knock get down just you know have some jewels and step up in line and knock it down and look duke made place you gotTa give them credit they do whatever and carry. I've been very carry. It goes out. I I said three things. You GotTa do to beat Duke. You gotta play ahead of the defense and scoring transition baskets. You gotta be strong with the basketball not commit live while turnovers rovers and you gotta make Vernon Carey defend and get him out of the game. They got him at a game on charges. They did those things but they didn't do enough things to finish off the game. Same great atmosphere. Great Energy Co. Anthony was good not great trae. Jones was terrific down the stretch and made plays now. Let's head to the Florida state game. What did you see last night from Duke? You said boy. I'll tell you one thing. They validated that win or two lab still concerned. I'm not totally an undue. I think I may not do. I think they validated that win. Big Time I think that their defense was terrific. I I put this out on twitter and I believe it. I thought their transition defense is the best. I've seen they get back and they they make shoot over at the worst. They influence you by being in the right position to take charge. I when you'RE GONNA make a list and we'll all do this at some point probably sooner than later but if you're GONNA make a list of teams that can win a national championship. I've got duke up there with anybody I really do. I gotta go into Vernon Carey more. You said that last night on television I totally agreed. Earning Carey can never be forgotten in his offense caches plan while he's playing lights out there getting decent production for mothers mothers. I I'm I'm all in on this Duke. I love their defense set. There was. It's kind of like this beginning it here when we would talk or I I remember doing duke. Two Games In the garden you you know love their old school keeping on a side defense. Maybe that went away for a while but I like it now I do i. I liked it last night and I like Florida state. Let's be honest. You talked about the world being maker Miss Tie Game Florida state at some wide open threes from the corner each side and one air balled the other. They miss badly. So I'm not down on a Florida state. I just think duke validated. Everything happening in Chapel Hill. You I thought Duke was good. Here's my thing I mean. Far To say it's hard to play against because they do turn you over and they spent them up a little bit and everyone said well to back. The Back Game Duke was going to be tired so different turned game. You play Thursday play Saturday you know. That's no different than what happened with you. Played in Chapel Hill eight miles away and you come home and you play a home game. That's that's easier than playing almost as easy as playing an NCAA tournament weekend but hear my concerns with Duke. I think that number one trade joe shot the ball fifteen or sixteen times burned. Kerr shot at five times. They gotTA figure out a way when people get up up and underneath them they gotta figure out a way to run offense and get the ball where they want it not stick it in trade Jones's hand coming off a high ball screen because I don't think so at at the end game I'm not sure and he did it against Carolina. He's a great finisher at the rim or a great decision maker coming off of that stuff. So that's a little bit of a concern. I love their defense or defence is terrific because it starts with trae Jones on the ball and then they were athletic enough with born and Stanley to get in passing lanes and and the defensive transition was great turning it over. I mean you know they got sped up and turn it over twenty one times. They gave up seventeen offensive rebounds and forget Florida State. I think Florida state upside is as good as Eddie team in the country. I really do believe that I think because every night there's a different guy who can beat you like last night. Trump forest was great. It could be Patrick Williams. It could be Denver sell. It could be osborn. It could be any number of guys you know could be Walker that could beat you on any given night. I just don't Oh in a possession game in the tournament. How does a Duke has to grind out and get a basket? Who Do you give the ball to? And how do you get him the ball all the same problem that I said last year with design Williamson team like they never figured out a way all right. This is how we're GONNA GET ZAINAB ALL. This is where he wants to get the ball so to me if they can overwhelm you and I call. Bully ball like Duke Duke as at their very best. They've overwhelmed people with their defense. And then they basically got a transitional made plays you think they're good enough if it gets to a grinded out game to win a game against life type opponent. Yeah I do I look. Here's what I believe. I believe even Alex O'CONNELL and enjoy Baker going to influence. The Gay is not because they can make shots you know and I I think they'll have influence. I do. Who says I think there's a toughness air with this group? I think Duke has instilled Gin. They're not GonNa Win National Championship every year. But it's a little bit like Tom. Izzo Bet against Michigan State. Even though they're out of the polls me yeah. I'm sure you are but don't be surprised when they make a run. Actually you can put a lot of ways you can put Syracuse in maybe this year but over the years but yeah. I'm not betting against Duke. I think Duke has you said they're flawed. We talk about every team being flawed. But yes I I can see them making a run as deep as you know winning a national champion I can also see them losing because of the things that you just said but man i. I feel like this team pretty much for the entire year has had the toughness culture of Duke Basketball and that's the thing that has served them best over the years I I feel that an abundance of talent I get all that but this team seems to have a toughness about him. That's terrific.

Cronin leaves Cincinnati to take UCLA job

"Hey, hey, Jason before we Chadha here. Couple of college notes are of note one. I hope the warriors bring back Chris Mullin in some capacity. He's going to step down as head coach at Saint John's. It sounds like the, you know, spent thirty years at Duke and watts Bobby Hurley to leave ASU to to. And then the one that came down. Just now Mick Cronin is the new head coach UCLA which me Cronin. Leave Cincinnati to take the Bruins job. Rick Barnes opted to stay at Tennessee. Instead of instead of or go to Tennessee instead of instead of take the UCLA job. What do you think? What do you think of those three college Garrett sells weird like if you guys remember Oregon like about eight or nine years ago had an opening head coach and bass warned everybody Tom Izzo. They made every play every coach they approach basically got a race and they settled on like their seven choice. Dana Altman, we'll guess what? Six or seven years later day gets to the final four. So I know Mick Cronin in number one target probably four or five or six, but think about a guide when you making a move on your girlfriend wife at the time before she became your wife option. I don't know that I was, you know, sometimes you got a, you know, just be happy that you get picked down the list for you. Jay were you were you an undrafted free agent. Were you a seventh round pick? I hope I wasn't. I never asked my wife that, but I have joked around with guys who whose wife is hotter than them as my wife is more tractive than me. And I'm like, you're not your life. I choice, but to the overachievers club, Gary the overachievers club going my old lady. Did you did you romance with money? Did you do give Bela's? "So we wouldn't know what they were saying delicate daily called. Hey, they were very delicate about it. Yeah. But, but, but yeah, I mean, it's a it was a piece that was just sort of harping on the, you know, the the some of the points that I had just made. I it's it is. It is interesting that like, you know, I mean, I think I I feel pretty comfortable saying, you know, I grew up around a lot of people who are probably ideologically closer to the daily caller than the average listener. This podcast. And I think a lot of those people would probably, you know, punch Izzo in the face if he was coaching if he did that to their kids what you said a minute ago was I think of way more eloquent version of what I said. But when when somebody does something that would be transgressive or bonkers in normal life. That's okay and coaching. That's news. That's news to the point that out not again. That's what I'm saying. Wishing that away is not an answer to this. Like, we we cannot like just pretending that doesn't exist is what gets us through the day as college sports fans and probably sports sports fans. Yes. And so it is worth even if it gets even if we don't say naughty naughty, Tom Izzo. You don't get to you know, you don't get to yell at your players. It is we're trying to come to grips with this sort of in a related story. USC Irvine coach Russell Turner. This is deadspin reporting and me summarizing decided to call. They were playing Oregon the other day UC Irvine the anti-doping one of the beloved Cinderellas of the tournament. Russell Turner Irvine's coach decided to call one of the ducks players Louis king Queen during the tournament was Queen. This is news to me. Alright. And here is Russell Turner explaining why he tried to do this in a press conference talking closely with Louis king you talked to him for a little bit. Can you share? Maybe what you were talking to him about. I'll tell you. I would say a double team Queen to try to see it back here Tatum. And I did. And I kept talking to my team about what we wanted to do. We were calling them Queen because I knew it might air Tatum. Because important is their team the Queen and chess was a play on his name of king. It bothered him. Started thinking about me started thinking about max. But he came back and finish the game really, strong and. He'd had a thing or two to say to me during the game. And I wanted to let him know that what I'd done was out of respect. Do we really think he was talking about him out of respect because he was comparing to the Queen on a chessboard is that the? And I think there's a good example because this shows how oh I'm just yelling instructions at a player can very easily go into the bad place. And certainly does all the time go into the bad place. So this subject is is worthy scrutiny. And I saw in a later part of that Scott van pelt clip that you were referring to him saying this doesn't have the this doesn't concern. You you the people complaining about it. Because Michigan state players are okay. With this a lot of Michigan state players past and present came out said, hey, we're okay with us. No big deal. Of course, it concerns us court time. Tom Izzo is a state employee. If the governor of Michigan is yelling and public at his chief of staff that is of course, a story. And that doesn't that if the college guys are okay with it. That's okay. That is ridiculous. I just I don't even understand just don't even understand the rationale of that. I just don't know that just seems like it would just just end all journalism of in. You know, everything having to do with college sports as long as you can get the players to sign off on it. How many players are okay..

"Three times in one season. And, but we don't want to come to grips with there is a lot of crazy to abusive behavior that goes into those winds, and I think something like this just dumps it out in the open. And then all of a sudden you have to say. And it doesn't even if you come to the conclusion that look Tom Izzo as a basketball coach has a right to yell at his players like that just seems like that should be somewhere, you know, as long as it's not derogatory as long as it's not, you know, over a certain line that there's a certain amount of yelling and coaching and really aggressive coaching that goes into sports that doesn't mean it has to make you feel comfortable, and it doesn't mean it has to make you feel comfortable that you are you know, endorsing and rooting for a product that is built on this stuff. I mean to me that that's what is so squeamish about this whole thing. Yeah. I think that's right. I mean, listen. I guess I'm open to the argument on the other side of it. And I think that the most compelling weirdly is like Charles Berkeley's response, which was just like shut up this stuff happens. You know? And I and I'm as sort of dismissive as that is I think that that's the closest to any kind of like honest defensive that, we're going to get Scott van pelt had a had a one last thing about it on his show, which I love s VP. I mean, I mean really really agree with him almost all the time. But his but his take on. This was like life is hard and we have to prepare our kids. And when they're you know, when when when they get turned down when they're ask for a raise. Then like we, and they don't know what to do then we're gonna wish we had given them more exposure the hard life. It's like to if my if Bill Simmons yelled at me the way that Tom Izzo yelled at this kid, there'd be nobody working at the ringer really would just leave or ESPN. No. That would be completely. He would be you get fired from ESPN for. And if you don't lately completely inappropriate, and I know. Oh, that it's not a one to one comparison, you know. And obviously, there's you can make the case that like, whatever the you gotta you're already yelling because you're out there and allowed place in it's just one one notch on the volume knob up or something. But it's still just like come on. I mean, it's not like, it's fine. If a much more willing to to listen to arguments in defensive Izzo that acknowledged that what he did was just wild in any other scenario rate. I mean, just like wildly inappropriate in any other moment in human life. If you wanna say, yes, that's like what he did. She would get him fired or maybe arrested in almost any other scenario in existence. But it's okay here for this reason. Then I'll listen to you. But like to brush it off like, you know, you gotta like teach are like this isn't the same as the like every kid gets a trophy argument. You know, this is just it's silly. And one of the thing before we ditch this subject that it's worth pointing out that this has become a little bit of a partisan issue too. I don't know if you've noticed this. But but I mean, I I know it's all part of the same. Like, you know, Trump is is pro concussions. You know? Real men. Get concussions point of view. That's exactly what it is. Yes. But but yeah, there's a I mean a liberals are making us all soft. Absolutely. I googled Tom Izzo to see what the top hits were that I was gonna get and there's regular FOX F. I one of the first hits was daily caller, g mean, daily caller for out sake. Article saying Charles Berkeley calls out the jackasses criticizing Tom Izzo for yelling at Aaron Henry. Thank thankfully, they they put some stars in jackasses..

"I can't wait for the. Here's your sign segment next. This is gonna be great. Topic number two David during Michigan state's first round win over Bradley in that they're in CA tournament. Coach Tom Izzo was cut yelling at freshman Ford. Aaron Henry, here's Kevin Harlan and Reggie Miller on the call. Beijing here from goats Tommaso. Which freshman ill Henry, you would make on a ten run. Tom Izzo would be happy. Is on. Now having words with the freshman. Henry who seems a little bit more polemics? It wasn't just that is a ranch out on the court to kind of confront Henry it was like he his he put his arms in this really weird posture kinda like I'm gonna put up my dukes, you know, in an old fashioned movie. Like he was gonna hit him or something. They would really strange win this blew up on Twitter. Predictably is Izzo. Then doubled down at his press conference to me. It was ridiculous. The the the way of blew up. I just would publicly thank the. Many many people that just saw it as ridiculous how people reacted, but I'm it's not nothing to do with anything with me with Aaron I was thinking of benching him, but I decided I'm going to start him anyway, and we're going to move on. And he's he's a great kid that is improved so much, but for us to be a championship team for us to move on. He's got to continue to improve even more. So what do you think David was there anything to see here? Wow. That's a good question. If you really wanna take stoic point of view. It's like, no not particularly because the fact that the that the only reason it's a subject that we're discussing is because the camera happened to catch it, right? I mean, the sure this sort of thing happens in every game. I mean, not done every single basketball game. But every track on the about the. Yeah. And and the I mean one thing that was that was notable in the in the chorus of ex players coming out to defend Tom Izzo and don't get me wrong. Those are those are a real and important for this conversation. But the it was notable that there is just a litany of voices of of X state players that were that were that could immediately relate to this sort of thing happening with with coach Tom Izzo. You know? I mean, that's it's like, you know, I mean, how many times like, you know, if it had come out after Bobby Knight through the chair that he threw chairs everyday that doesn't make it better. You know? I mean, it's it's it's it's a significant. It's a significant moment in the whether or not it happens all the time. And it's it's a an if it does I don't think that makes it any better. It makes it worse. I think it I think the the thing about it happening all the time goes to exactly why this is so explosive because I think all of us that love college sports, and that includes me. Kind of think no this happens, and we don't really grapple with it very much. And I think what we know is that every college football coach and every college basketball coach, minus evidence to the country is a tyrant, and they are a tyrant who rules over an unpaid workforce..

"So I wanted to talk to stand Gundy about what happened with Tom Izzo this weekend because a lot of people got divided and then it became a conversation about are we to sensitive in two thousand and nineteen have we gone soft. Coach can't yell at a player, but rest assured, the look of an old white man screaming with his fist clenched at a black basketball player in two thousand nineteen. It's just not gonna fly people. At the very least going to argue about it, and you could call them soft. If you want to we liked Tom Izzo here standing Gundy loves Tom is. But all of these things can be true at the same time. Tom Izzo really cares about kids Tommaso has done a magnificent job teaching kids, and in that moment in two thousand nineteen he behaved in a way that was a little too outsized for the moment. And Furthermore, what I would say you is not coaching. It's just an old guy losing his mind and his temper that's not coaching yelling at that guy that way in that spot. It's just a Manding discipline of others and you not being disciplined yourself. Well, there are different styles of coaching. So some people would say that absolutely is coaching. And that's the way Tom Izzo has coached his entire career. Did it the Draymond green? Did it to others? The problem. I had was people can pairing what the college kid was doing to their actual jobs. The only person working that day was Tom Izzo. He's the only one earning a paycheck the kid in earning. A penny. I mean, just not well, what are your thoughts? Here. Someone who loves Tommaso and someone who would lose his temper on the sidelines. Yeah. Look, here's what I think. People are missing thou. I is we're taking that as as one incident, and we're seeing it, and I understand the optics of it. Okay. But what we're missing or what people are missing is the entirety of Thomas owes relationship with that player in with that team. And to me, the most telling thing was reading the reading the comments of his current team players on his current team and his former players and Tom has a relationship number one where they know that he cares about them. And number two that his methods have gotten the most out of them. And they appreciate that. Now, they probably don't appreciate it in the moment. But the bottom line is those guys are going to Michigan state to become better as players and hopefully. It goes beyond that. And it says students in as men, and I think at Michigan state, it is because of the relationship Tom has so people can question his methods, but his methods of work. He didn't hit the kid. He got loud and yelled atom. I guarantee you that kids have done the same thing players have done the same thing back to him. It's that heat of the moment thing that if you haven't been in high level athletics, you don't understand. And you don't appreciate I mean, I I know what people would liking to do is have the guy come over and him say, listen, what I'd like you to do is, you know, run back a little harder. If you could that would help us that's not going to happen in the heat of the battle in in major college athletics professional athletics. And I understand people are sensitive about it. And I do know, and I've been one who has stepped over the line at times, I'm not saying that doesn't happen. But I thought way too much was made of this. Stand you can win and being affective coach without doing that. He could have done what you just jested. And maybe it still had the same effect right there account as examples of people who have won without doing Tom Izzo did which was basically emasculated kid at center quarter, national TV well that was the thing. It was on, you know, center quarter, national TV, and yes, you can win with all different kinds of demeanor as cultures. No question about that. That's Tom's personality. And again, I mean we have in. It's not like we've we've seen this big uprising of Michigan state players or former Michigan state players who then could say something. They went their full..

"And he lines up all sides, and what could have been the game clinching right exception for the Kansas City Chiefs. It's those moments where coaching kind of comes in. And I just bring that up because if I was a coach it's moments like this that I'll have this clip. I'll have a clip of that play to show my my team. Okay, show, my players that if you want to understand what I get on you guys about what I always say. Hey, listen, focus, look at your surroundings know, what's going on the situation. What I need to do. What about make sure you had that checklist? Okay. Because one play can mess it up for everybody. And we're all looking at. Hey, that's easy. Just lineup. Correct. But then hindsight to cost them the Super Bowl, honestly. But this is the reason this is what good coaches do coaches find those little plays. And then you got someone other players who are on the team saying on it. I never happened to me. And those always the guys that happens to you know, fourth and five, hey, there got a hard count. It's all got to coach God, he jumps offsides. Just like we just told you they're going to hard count to get us off. And then call a time out, but Tom Izzo last night watching him in the way that he coached his players as hard as he did and people took umbrage, and I'm saying why and I know Chris Carter guy who hall of fame wide receiver for the Minnesota. Vikings for many years he had some thoughts on it. And I had similar thoughts as well. Because this is the reason why you go play for coaches like Tom Izzo coach Izzo made a promise to that kid and his parents and last night when he was yelling at that kid. I was wondering to kids. Where at the game. How would the kids parents feel and you know, something the kids parents be that's what we signed up for when he sat in our living room. He told us I'm going to promise you, I'm going to be on your son. I'm growing from young boy into being a real, man. And I'm getting this college degree, those are the things that coats Izzo promises kids and their family. And that's what air got last night. You don't wanna rebound. You don't wanna run back on defense? You're gonna get chewed out by the coach. Chris Carter on f s one first things first, and you know, right after you know, even Henry he tweeted about it and said, here's a tweet from Henry as well. And for people who can't see it out there. It's a it's a bullseye on, you know, basically saying you hit the Mark what Chris Carter is saying is what I've been saying what players who want to be great are saying because all players who want to be great. They want to be coached art. They wanna tell me, you could tell me about all the positives. And all the great things I do. But I think the real cultures are able to find the things that you don't do. Well, or when you are slack into, you know, make me pick my play up. And so that's one of the things that that this term it brings out to it brings out things like that. And you know, that some of the the content that you can get here on the rich Eisen show. And I say that because starting on Tuesday the rich Eisen show just remember this starting Tuesday. "Four years, six months prime bird. Yeah. I think prime Bert should be life in prison. What? Well, donlevatar. You can't have fun when you're old. Stugatz. Look at me. I'm having a ball mullet. These live at our show with this two guys on ESPN radio. I think there's an interesting story developing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Greg we'll get to it and just a minute here. But Greg you've arrive let me tell them really Chrissy has no idea that he is arrived here at ESPN congrats. And it just happened. And he still has no idea because when I told them what happened. He asked me. Well, what does this mean? And I said, it means you arrived. Where did I arrive? Exactly. Well, Chuck has sent out a, you know, he's in charge of easy. He's a suit and executive up in Bristol big time. He loves our show. He's very supportive of us. We love him. But he sends these stories out all day long, right things. People ESPN said things that other people have said and other networks new stories. The news content creator for increased fantastic. He's one of the nicest people ever met. And. By the way, Mike UCLA. Now, he is asking for the sound of me blasting Sean farnum, and Tom is up of just let you know right out to send that to. He just sent me an Email. Well, you probably emailed him. I I did. So anyway. Greg. We were discussing Tom Izzo before. And I took exception to the reaction from people at this network of defending Tom Izzo and Tom Izzo 's refusal to apologize because saying things like, hey, I don't know what happened in your line of work. But this is this is what happens. Ok well this kid's in eighteen year old. He's not working it till he starts earning a paycheck. It's a hobby for him. Okay. The only one working yesterday was Tom Izzo. And what Tom Izzo is doing. And the way he's earning. A paycheck is on the backs of his players performing. Well for him the player doesn't have that much. I mean, listen, he has his own whatever pressure. He has that self apply pressure and pressure to please teammates and his coach and his school and everyone. Okay. The guys got the real pressures is a guy you make ten million whatever he's making a year. But you came out and said that Tom Izzo cross the lot you remember what you said. Yeah. I you know abuse doesn't have to be physical abuse. Right. And be mental. It can be spoken. Yes. That was the money quote. And they are now using that all over the ESPN platforms to kind of balance out this this conversation. Okay. So I'm honored in our world. You've arrived that come with a bonus. At all. I don't Chris do. We know this comes with any sort of owners. It's no bonus. But you do get to make a speech kind of like an acceptance speech arriving. But you want to know something, and we'll get your acceptance speech and just a second here. I do think that's a good idea that Greg stumbled upon and we should present that to ESPN if you say something that they use all the shows and all the networks, you should get a little bonus something a little something something maybe a call from the head of Disney. Right. Well, I'm thinking a little bit like actual cash. I mean, I know their job opinions. But if I give a good enough opinion that you're gonna plaster everywhere. Right. I feel a little bonus should be play. Also, did you have people try now perform another which would be what we wanted sensitive? That's what people already doing minus you. That's true. Did you have Tom Izzo making more money than Nick Sabin regard? It doesn't the larger point is the only guy working the only guy who was working yesterday was not the eighteen year old who was playing basketball for Tom is it was Tom Izzo. The only guy who got paid for whatever he did yesterday was Tom Izzo the eighteen year old. For guys defend Tom Izzo afterwards..

"But I'll tell you what if I was ahead of newspaper, and you didn't do your job you'd be held accountable. Sway? It is. And Sean farnum who is a college basketball analyst and very good at it. By the way, he was one of the people defending Tom Izzo after the there are scattered reports are things that are being asked of you that you have to do. And if you don't do it. Yeah. Your coach is gonna get mad at you. Guess what? If you knew a bad job on the shows who've been your boss is probably gonna call you. If we screw up. We're probably going to hear somebody yell at us and say, hey, you guys you guys were horrible out there. You don't want. If you're not doing your job, you have to be held accountable. And when this happens in college athletics, whether it was Frank Martin a couple years ago giving looks at guys we overreact to it. And we wanna make it bigger when you get recruited, you know, who you're going to play for. So here's what would drives me crazy, Greg. All right because I believe Tom Izzo to be a good person. Tom Izzo was a friend of the show. Tom is was come on and played Christmas songs on this show. And I believe in the care about his players where Tom. Is was making a colossal mistake as shown Fordham, by the way, is please stop comparing what they are doing to your jobs that actually pay you money like, and I'm okay with what is did. It's part of sports, and I do agree with the fact like, hey, if you go play for Tom Izzo, you know, what you're signing up for. Okay. I also believe that you can win without a masculine a kid at center court on national TV an eighteen year old hoop. Certain is out there trying his very hardest. Right. He's trying hard as he can. But stop telling me, what your bosses would do if you were bad on TV, Sean, you are getting paid your boss is also getting paid everyone in your transaction is earning a paycheck the only one who's working yesterday is Tom Izzo. Okay. His players until they start getting paid. It's a hobby. It's not a job you're comparing you're paying job to kids who are earning. Penny playing college basketball for guy who's making ten million dollars a year. So it just drives me crazy too here guys after the games. Oh, I don't know. What would your boss to? Okay. Here's the thing. He's eighteen playing basketball at your university for free and making your university. And you a ton of money right another. Yeah. Tom is a cross the line. There's no question about it. It was abuse. What happened there it wasn't physical abuse? But it was it was abuse nonetheless..

"All right. Let's see weekend fit in a few calls that we might have here. Joe is calling from Wyckoff. Thanks for taking the time. Hey, Steve how you doing? It's Joe from Wyckoff is I got a couple of things. I just want to imagine you you're right on with with Tom Izzo. And the and the way I cannot do what they're doing if they don't hostile and the yells at them. It's absolutely correct. No, no stop. The the only thing that could have been more positive and Mike Ditka. Would've known how to handle that as well. Well in the monologue. And this kind of depresses me I was being sarcastic. I didn't think there was. I know I will admit Joe that it did look like he was about to eat eat the kid hole. Showed them a lot of teeth and a lotta gums and came close to being Hannibal Lecter. I thought, but but again, I mean, it is I don't think he did anything wrong. But in this day and age of being so politically, correct. I guess that applies dancy double A Tom Izzo, the coaches on the division one level. I mean after all a little bit of yelling and screaming can sometime wake up a kid. Who is given the best Stanford. I totally agree. Just one last thing. Sure. Hit a home run. And now, I think we're gonna see the metropolitan bomber starting next week. Conforto. It runs. We've got nemo norm. Run this afternoon. I saw McNeil we're gonna become the new bombers well here. Listen, I mean what they're doing in the spring. I mean, that's nice. They're scoring runs. And they're hitting the long ball does counts. And you wanna see obviously, the offense and the pitching and the defense when it does count. And it can't come soon enough. And of course, it is going to be coming up next Thursday as the New York, metropolitan, Washington crash get together and the New York Yankees. And with the Baltimore Orioles is unfortunate that the Yankees and everybody else in the American League east won't be able to play Baltimore more than nineteen times. That's going to be like taking if not a AAA team. Maybe a AA team white judge just a second. It could be more. An eight team and one without Manny Machado, of course. "And you got a point you gotta get got not necessarily be physical. But the able to tell them. Hey, that's not what you do there. It's okay to. Tell players you make mistakes you can't coddle player. Maybe I'm just the old school part of me. But I know some people today are looking at what is oh was doing yesterday and challenging and getting up in his players faces. And people are saying, oh, man. You can't do that. You can't do that to me. I wanted that I crave it because I respect it. My elder respect it my coach because I know what he was doing was putting me in the right situation to be at my best. I will never get mad at a coach. Are there coaches who step over the line? So may, but when you look at the resume of Tom Izzo when you look at everything that he's accomplish. When you look at all the players that are planning the NBA or playing professionally and when you look at the championships a final four appearances if that coach tells me, hey, you're not playing right now, you're making too many mistakes. What are you doing? I'm not going to be one to try to fight back on coach. I gotta get my act together. I've been there before I know Tom Izzo. You know, obviously a lot of people took umbrage to that. But here's a little Tom Izzo game. Just talking about, you know. Why he coaches this way in what the tournament brings out of him as a head coach. This is one time, you know, the my bads are out the window if they're my bad that team played better that guy played better. "Tournament is allegedly underway. Let us bring a man who will be calling many of the games all the way through the national championship Turner sports analyst and somebody we watched play in high school. You're even old now south lakes high school. Let's start with this. I ask you as an analyst Dookie when you watch Zay on. What do you see? Wow. See explosiveness? I see, you know, see almost like a combination of a linebacker who jumps like Vince Carter. Is really nothing we've ever seen before in terms of his explosiveness athleticism. But also how hard he plays and steals activity has energy just off the charts. We're so used to comparing people you really can't compare them because there's really been nobody quite like him. That's how unique Zion. Williamson is all right grant beyond Duke. You've had a chance to study the brackets who do you like beyond the blue devils? I mean who jumps out to you as a team that could could at least get to the final four not further. While there's a lot of teams, and I know a mouse opposed to say this. But I think North Carolina is really talented trouble for that. I can get in trouble for that. So I if anyone says anything I'll just pretend I'm seeing Smith, but but not North Carolina. Roy Williams has done a fantastic job. I do think UVA they've had a lot of setbacks adversity in the tournament. But I do think this is this is Tony Bennett's most talented team. And I think they'll get through and get to the final four. I think Michigan state. I know they're in the same region as Duke, but I I was at the big ten conference tournament last week. I followed them Tom Izzo. This team is just balanced tough. They defend they can score. They really don't have a weakness at all as a sleeper team. I like Texas Tech the best defensive team in the country. They got a kid Jerry Kover who's probably wanted to top five players in college basketball that nobody knows about he's capable as they are. Taking a long run. And I love Florida state. You know, I love what they've done Leonard Hamilton. They won twelve of thirteen games in the regular season. People forget they got to the ACC conference finals loss to Duke. But they have a lot of death in very talented. So there's teams out there. Other than Duke believe it or not that are capable for long run. I'm gonna ask you to put all your old man hat for second. You and I did this a little bit the other night in Chicago during the big ten turnament. Will you go back to that last year? Even when you lost to Arkansas Scotty Thurman shot sorry to bring this up. You had seen your late and teams teams at three or four all Americans seem to time. And when you're watching now played there, but you're watching now this one and done era are the guys that he good. I mean, you look at them and think, yeah, these guys could have played when we did and won something. That's a good question. I think I think I think there's some really talented players and a lot of young talented players. But you know, the difference was you had older players more experienced players who had the opportunity maybe go pro who didn't think that UNLV team in nineteen ninety blue blue out Duke and Denver in the championship game. And you had Stacy Augmon.

"It, you know, could you handle? You know, fifty million dollars. It's eighteen years old. I can't handle it a lot. I mean either. That's exactly what I'm saying. And so I don't think we see the studies on what it does. You know, if you look at Hollywood, you know, those those young stars that come out later on in life hasn't ended up very good for a lot of them. That started really young, you know. Yeah. And I I worry the same thing. So I listen, I I don't care. My Michigan state. It's going to be standing whether we're wanting done Dun done or foreign done, you know, but why not why not look in the other side of it. It's worked out pretty good for football. And, you know, those kids get a little more mature, and and they get a better opportunity, and maybe they can handle things a little better. He's Tom Izzo. Michigan state head basketball coach joining us continental tire coaches corner. What what's your best closing line? You ever had with a recruit like you ever walked out going? I killed it. Usually get on my hands in these. There. My wife and my children, please come. Have you ever have you ever cried when he lost to recruit? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Chris waiver. I mean, I'll remember it till the day. I'd I 'cause I recruited them for over four years and of Chris, and that was one of those I was kinda young then I was still an assistant. But you know, you do you do get emotionally involved with some of these kids, especially if you recruit them for a long time have you ever gone out? Have you ever waited or gone to recruits house and then gone outside? And then saw like coach K ready to come in or something Calipari. Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, more and more. So at the schools, you know, when you go there, and everybody's lining up, and you get you know, different times. And yes, that's not always a good feeling. You know, those two guys seem to be able to last SU most of the guys they want, you know, they're to me they're more selections stage, and I'm gonna more in begging stage. Happens when you get to the tournament. Like, what changes with you and your team that we've seen these runs out of Michigan? We're not surprised anymore. So what well, you know? I do think for the most part, you know, if we can stay healthy, which we last couple of years haven't been as healthy. But if we can stay healthy, I think teams, you know, we've gotten better. And and I think there's a culture here where they believe they can win, you know, we've gone to a final four I think is a seven seat and we've not gone as a one seed. So sometimes it's a coin flip. You know, the one thing Dan about the tournament. Boy, it comes down to matchups comes down to, you know, middle Tennessee beat a couple years, you know, which go beat Duke do mean sometimes teams get hot the different soda. I tell my football buddies, you know, usually in football, the bigger stronger faster better team wins. But in basketball between the three point shot and referees, which could eliminate guys, you know, in football, you can get five holding penalties. But at least. Tackle is still in the game and basketball. He's out and that makes a difference for more upsets and and more problems, but we've kinda hung in there because I think we've got a pretty good culture where they believe that we can do well in March..

"He can tell them. No guys. What you're doing is. Or is not good enough to do this. And honestly believe that can be a burden on him more often than he may like to admit because he has to he's got fifty two kids under him, quite honestly, I want them to step up and say, hey, Ben, what do I have to do? Can I do this better? What do we have to do to win a Super Bowl? Those comments getting an enormous amount of attention around the sport. And the last day or two are Steelers reporter is Jeremy Fowler. He joins us. Now. Jeremy how have players inside the Steelers locker room reacted to those comments. Well, greeny, I did speak with the Steelers player this week. And he said, maybe the fifty two children comment was a little strong. Although he feared he knew what the general manager meant by that. Because is bigger is thirty five years old provice bigger is an undisputed leader in the locker room. He's a guy players listen to his got the hall of fame pedigree. But he pointed out there other leaders as well defensive end Cam Hayward center marquees pouncey and after a nine win season missing the playoffs of the first thousand thirteen that flare pointed we need collective group of leaders to re steer this program. Now as rather spreaker calling out players yet. Most most guys didn't sweat it at the time one prevailing theme. I heard behind the scenes is that the stature of player rob is for your call that in Antonio Brown. One of the best to do it in the last decade was at least a mile problem for some. But but mostly they didn't sweat and they moved on. All right. Jeremy well done. Thank you very much. We're gonna leave it. There were some minor technical issues. We'll try and get those pardon me worked out and then. We'll continue in a moment. So let me tell you what we have still coming on the program, David west played for the warriors. He's going to tell you one big thing. He's worried about and how it will affect Golden State in the playoffs as we continue. And we've been having the highschool to NBA debate all morning, we will bring in Michigan state coach Tom Izzo live next. What does he think will you hear? He'll join me live here on get up. And with that thought in mind a little sneaky, hembo time. Don Izzo is one of two coaches to reach the final four seven times in the last twenty years who's the other is a coach K is a coach ROY is a coach cow. Those are the options aunts is next. "Coach Tom Izzo. Congratulations on your first win a game was a tough one to win and against a pesky team. Oh, gosh. To start off my radio show want you to know. I'm mad at you. Because you told me would be a lot easier than this is coach and. Sure was a tough way to start out and the next opponent by whereas North Carolina in Dean Smith got a little tougher. Yeah. That's what dick vitelle did his famous line to me for the game. He had a thing on the ticker. And I was back in the studio asked me to come over and speak to him by microphone there. And so he put up there. You know, Dean Smith eight hundred fifty nine and two Tom Izzo wanna know and said, good luck. But like you said there'll be a lot of Gus stories in in for me and probably for you too. That the first when you get the announcement tears degree from the sadness and the selfishness because we don't want him to be gone, and then it grows into the celebration of his life. Well, that's exactly what happened to me. And I found out at a rebounders club. Lunch. And I went right over to the house, and Gary and the girls were all there, and Gus was still there. Thank god. For me. I got a chance to see him twice over Christmas. And once bring my my family over, but my mother, and my mother and dad were real close with gusts and Ruth when we used to go on those trips, and they'd sit down there and discuss all the things, and it was good because you know, my dad's gonna be prejudiced. So everything was great with Tom. But Gus was prejudiced. Everything was great with Tom. So those guys walk by and say what you find something wrong with me because there's a lot of things we're not doing right? Yeah. I share this with you. I think you'll get a kick of the last time. I talked to us on the phone was the day before passed, and and he asked me house Tom doing and this will be the last time. I got him the laugh I said, Tom is doing great. And as long as we don't lose to Michigan. He's gonna be fabulous. And then Gusta started laughing. Yeah. He's he hasn't changed. And I went over there. I'll tell you. Honestly, you know, I know Gary told me that he was you know, struggling off and on. But boy when I got there. I was blessed because he remembered everything, and we talked about a lot of things with my mother, and it was just one of those moments that I will cherish the rest of my life. You are so kind to keep us afloat. I was lucky that he started out my rain that. You know that one hundred years of basketball and bringing all those guys back, and I think we set a precedence that now will hopefully be part of his legacy, and I'm gonna make sure it remains part of his legacy not money. So some thoughts about our colleague and best buddy can act as well. When we come back with more of the Tom Izzo pre-game show today, we're going to talk a little basketball the first break in the Spartan network. What.

"Pardon the interruption but i'm michael barr tony ronald denia was planning to marry schools women at the same time in august you think that'll work i'm tony kornheiser then worked for me in two of the divorce sisters but my reaction to this is what what do you mean he's going to marry two women at the same time what look i i know lots of things go in brazil really go i mean he really resilient to have to hold richer from four from better or worse you maybe one that seems odd to me welcome pti boys and girls today's episode the warriors save your confidence the magic is interested in tom izzo and my cats advanced to play my goal the nights for the stanley cup but we begin today with the boston celtics once again separating themselves from the cleveland cavaliers by double figures in boston this time it was thirteen points cleveland got nothing at all from jr smith and tristan thompson but the headline seemed to be lebron james is apparent exhaustion we'll by lebron said he was fine did he looked tired to you yes he also admitted he was tired i mean he didn't say the words i am tired but the question was asked and he sort of said yeah you know he now is a yeah and t loose said yes he looked tired i mean you don't need to be a physician to figure this out he was tired lebron though tony i thought said very accurately everybody's a little tired this time of the year and there probably is the case but the cavaliers can't afford him to either sit for much time during gains right or not be able to finish them with a lot of strength and vigor at the end of games i don't know what what's the solution for the cleveland cavaliers except being home with a bronze have more energy so last week i remember saying to you that because cleveland was the older team i felt that when they stopped having two days off and they.
