U.S. Wholesale Inflation Rose a Record 8.6 Percent Over the Past Year

"Remember the narrative about inflation when we first started when we first started to see prices creeping up What was the narrative first Jim Inflation's not real you're conservative media hosts You're all a bunch of bad things It's all nonsense And then the narrative was as prices started to become more widespread and their increases became noticeable All right there may be inflation but it's really not that big of a deal And then the third narrative was okay it's a big deal now inflation but don't worry it's transitory It'll go away And now that the numbers came out annualized inflation up 8.6% a number we haven't seen in decades now all of a sudden the new narrative is not only these inflation not transitory not only is it likely here to stay for a while but don't worry it's actually a good thing Come on they didn't do that No they did Here is an actual headline by MSNBC James saros wiki forgive me if I'm saying your name wrong it's not intentional How COVID became the unlikely hero of our inflation crisis And the sub had line makes you really wanna laugh where they play it down and insist don't worry This is a good thing inflation because the government printed a lot of money and gave it to people to spend So it doesn't really matter that you have nothing to buy and there's a supply chain crisis What matters is you have a lot of paper in digital money to spend on things you can't actually buy That's what matters That's an actual piece in MSNBC by the way Now for people who don't think inflation is a problem in that just printing people are printing four people money and giving it to them even though they can't buy products because we don't have them And don't understand how the productivity side of an economy is the important side Right folks it's not the demand side You can demand whatever you want Tom Hanks and Wilson and cast away when they get caught on that island by themselves demanded a lot They probably demand that a steak dinner They probably demanded access to a movie library The man that access to their old favorite songs but Tom Hanks was caught on an island where he had a lot of FedEx boxes full of a lot of stuff he couldn't use and he didn't demand So he had a lot of things he could trade but he had nobody to trade them with because no one was producing anything he demanded Having a bunch of money to go out and buy stuff that doesn't exist is

"Tom I have a whole good morning I have a whole set was built in two thousand two it has aluminum siding and I'm not sure what to use to clean the sighting and also just wearing is that something that you guys would do cleaning side it is not something that we do and Dave you might you might have action that might might work but what I usually just recommend is not using up all right I certainly recommend not using a power washer if you can drive water behind ruminant sighting at this in a if you really drive the water heavy on the file you could actually with aluminum siding I have it unlocked and now you have a bigger issue along with the product and anything but I think just a little bit softer curtain typically work right right that's what I I would recommend if you are you trying to just get like an algae or dirty kind of off the siding tell yeah it the dirt that accumulated over the years we bought the house like a couple years ago and I noticed that you know there's some dirt on there and stuff like that it did I'll just try to get it cleaned and say look a little bit better so a detergent I could dawn dish soap works very well for cleaning things like that off your house it's it's pretty mild doesn't damage any vegetation or anything otherwise there is a product if you want to want to go and buy something specifically for cleaning the outside your house you bye I think you have a big box store Joe Max J. O. M. A. acts it's a it's concentrate that you mix with a little bit of bleach and water mostly water and it's okay fine to actually remove algae from singles inciting so you can you can buy that it's yeah that's what they advertise it forces specifically cleaning the exterior of your house and no no problem okay if so yeah there I'll just try to don that sounds appropriate I don't there's no well Gee that I'm aware yeah turned into thank you Tom Pritchett that Eric brown siding and limited this year or Eric you let a fifteen year old boy loose with a power washer and then you'd have a sighting job on your hands or absolutely yeah the other thing with a power washer with with aluminum siding of eighteen years old it could start we came closer they could all take that right off sure the whole year we want to be careful with that thought yeah go head higher the fifteen year old your command also right right right Hey I got a text question deciding question I noticed many homes are being cited with tie back rap C. jump I see just citing over citing sometimes what's the industry standard or what do you do we won't we prefer to tear off whatever siding on the house that's what we prefer to do get down to the substrate you can see the wall you can see if there's any rider damage or anything that needs to be replaced behind the old siding up the old siding was failing there could be damage behind it that you don't see if you already existing siding so we like prepare it all off get down to the substrate you also have a flat surface to work with you know called a couple calls ago ago that people weeding siding note if the substrate buckling ordered the nails aren't holding or if it was installed poorly and now it's pushing the fighting out that could cause weaving siding as well so we'll make sure that that intact and then we don't use hi back I know a lot of builders doing you see a lot of an under construction and and even a remodel we prefer using insulation and it still gives you the same what water Berrier that part of it gives you but it gives you an energy corporation so you do get a little bit of an R. added our value to your wall when we when we use our installation but the main thing there is that you have to use a water barrier behind any siding product it whether the final L. P. smart side aluminum steel or even cedar siding you need that water Berrier we prefer to use the insulation for the attic our value our energy savings while the other guys might use Tyler Tyler does not have a energy corporation attached to it and but in your taping all the joints on that insulation due to seal it all up you know we take we take all the points on the insulation so the water work it and sliding on down it's not going to find this even makes waves back to us hello to the wall in an insulation breathable sometimes we run into where the the house rap is not as breathable as you would really hope it would be odd so perhaps a little bit more moisture than what you really want if you're residing somebody's house Eric and they had previously had tied back on the house or or insulation for that matter if you're taking all the siding off what happens with all the nail holes you have to put something back over that are you do you take the phone off and and redo it so you don't have all the old nail holes in it yes we are in the house already we'll we'll leave it on because it is a water barrier but we'll go over it with our form and so by doing that we can go over all the nail holes and then we're putting a new water very over the top hi and if inflation is on the house difficult if it's if it's not working often inflation are in the house and usually one inch fall and we'll leave that and then we'll go over the top of that with our our insulation and again I'll grant you want what water Berrier is going over the top whether it's leaving the private Connor leading old inflation on and that should cover all the all the holes that the old siding had already put into it on sighting unlimited we.

"On DMV go ahead what's yours Tom I heard that there was a question but I didn't catch the entire question so well can you recall first of all can you renew can you go to DMV anymore or do you renew everything online well each county established as their own is going to have their own policies under these circumstances it kind of depends some there may be some counties that are open in some of the more rural areas Denver department of motor vehicles is closed until March thirty first at the earliest that's a major deal that's a major deal so how to people of they have a new car what did they do well we're in a situation like this and when we say if we have a computer outage that is a long lasting one and people are trying to get things done difficult law enforcement was notified so in this circumstance I can almost assure you the state department they're going to be more lenient our day they're going to be more lenient yes okay next thing then what about emissions more lenient to the emissions testing R. I don't know that there's been a definitive policy established about what they're going to do about car the people that need to renew their registration and required emissions test or for a new registration on an older car but the stations are open as far as I know but you have already contacted that's what I thought were now thank you very much thank you letter cherry are you going to say the same thing what is your take on DMV go ahead sherry this is the interchangeable formation on the troubleshooter show along with help where the traffic cop for help what's going on sherry it's scary but anyway Kerry was happening I'm an ounce already that that as far as the DMV that life license plate they're given an extra two months grace period thank you thank you very much for joining us tonight yeah okay great and as far as golf courses golf courses have been closed for over a week now there's no golf courses of well there are I I hate to defy that but there are some private ones that were open the country in a country club or something exactly know about that but as far as all the thirty one okay the London staff say they are close all right thank you three oh three seven one three talk you know it seems to me there are certain activities that won't endanger people golfing is one of them if you want to go out and keep your distance how can golfing hurt anyone that's the part I don't understand or walking in the park you know keep your distance of course you want the enforcement mechanism now is this for what rule provisions in the role for tri county health department now where are you reading this from state statute yeah actually good listener Dave Porter sent it to me it's right in the section on the order to stay in place order from the health department okay so that would mean any stand place water that not just that health department right well this one is T. C. H. E. D. which is tri county health department what does it say it says it's unlawful for any person who willfully violate disobey or disregard this order any person who dies may be guilty of a class one misdemeanor upon conviction may be punished by a fine up to five thousand in imprisonment up to eighteen months end in addition if you do not follow this order T. C. H. D. may seek a court order in Colorado state District Court to enforce this order in restrain you all right listen we can't have martial law and dictatorships right now I understand we need to stay safe I understand that but doggone it there are plenty of ways to stay safe without stay at home what the hell does it mean more first of all first of all people should be able to get their car go anywhere they want as long as they don't get out who cares who cares second of all you should be able to so if I want to take a drive I should be able to what do you care I'm in my car I'm not hurt anybody if I go to an open area where you can keep six foot distance there's nothing wrong with that either I so there's certain things that are just be asked now now we're just getting a little ridiculous I know it's dangerous and I'm not saying to be reckless but for god's sake you can keep it distance what if I want to go out ride by bicycle why should we die you're not supposed to but why are you okay you're not supposed to heal you sound like my mother you know I suppose why because I said so that's a and that's what the order says Michele what's happening with your student loan let's get to some consumer problems we want to help you what's going on three weeks maybe even a month ago you did a show with the gentleman that was having its assets garnished by its student loans yes and I was not notified of mine intelligence they started taking from my SSI it's compounded daily and I didn't know they could take a government benefit government the government they call that's right it is your right it is that's right I need to know that they cannot give me a pay off on it I get it within four hundred dollars and if I mail them a check of certified check whenever they tell me it has to be to the penny or there's still going to garnish me now that sounds ridiculous to me yeah but you when you talk to that gentleman about a month ago to to hand him over to an attorney I had to get out of my car and I couldn't hear the end of that the guy that we talked to about student loan collection I'm trying to think what we did with it if anyone remembers mark do you remember that call there's been so many of them by yeah now mine's been going on since June we used to have an expert that was excellent and the co shooting these down and then getting it paid off in some but why are you exempt what makes she said why wouldn't attorney even be able to help you well I was just wondering if they could help me get it to where they would accept the pay off amount as a certain dollar amount all she wants is to pay off and then she would send it to him no if all she wants was a pay off I can imagine that's an issue I they're not giving it to at thirty yeah sure that's not what I'm hearing what I'm hearing from her she wants to negotiate it down to a single pay off because I got past that because this was a student loan back in twenty twelve all you want let me get this straight then all you want is a payoff amount right so that and you can't get it right so to start compounding daily what what reason what reason do they give you for not giving you the payoff they tell me that the check had exactly hit Sam well you have to know what it is right right that is the biggest piece of garbage Michelle who told you that people it credited jester's court day they're the ones that are garnishing my SSI reddit adjusters because you even know they're legit well you know I do I don't and I do the department of education is the one that turned it over to them and so that I can confirm that much and I have to give you listed they have to give you a pay off that I know it well I don't even understand why they're not giving up have you say I want to know the pay off plus per diem they give you a payoff plus per diem so the Pappas for today the per diem is to be added for each day after that you U. S. so that specifically you tell me talk to someone who told you that they know from their attorneys and their lawyers that you are allowed and you are permitted to have a payoff amount and if they won't give it to you find out the specific name and person who will not give you a pay off and we're going to take legal action you tell that I'm not kidding now it out get it get Michelle Mattel Machon how she get back in touch with us three oh three seven one three talk seven one three eight two five five Lori you have a comment on martial law go ahead Laurie hello hold on Laurie please I'm gonna take a break I'll come back to all of you right after this now impact traffic this report is sponsored by discover we treat you like you treat you if you do have to be out and about on the highway drive please be careful out there but the highways are wide open across the mile high city at this time watch out for some construction work though at the mousetrap eastbound I. seventy on the ramp to northbound I. twenty five bit stopping go this word with roadworks taking place on that ramp to travel through there with caution but the rest of the highway drive across the mile high city freeway system is wide open.

"Antonio Hey Tom. Our weaknesses guards. We're addressing it. They didn't have to do that a week ago. That was a Tom. We know you know personnel were fixing our left guard spot. You know the culture of the chargers. Yes, would tom fix it? Yes, I think he definitely will fix it. I don't. Look at it I. Don't think there was too much wrong with the coach i. just think when you look at the whole scene. From last year, the guards were terrible. I mean as Philip catch the ball. He was hit in the face. He didn't have time to set his feet. Throw the ball, so he looked like he was losing like he was not himself. He was like he was for like he was really forty years old. When norm. Realistically, this guy can still playing. You saw you saw spurts of it, but I think for for Tom I. Think this is the ideal place for the simple fact can come in and put his own offense. He can add his offense and I think if you go anywhere else, you can't do that. I think he comes into. He comes into La. He changed the culture of getting them back to where they need to be back into the playoffs winning close game losing losing because they've lost so many games in the last four minutes of the of the game last year. You know crazy, listen. It's the craziest franchise in the NFL. They've had great players everywhere. It's almost like this. `Nigma within the franchise Oh. Too. Many gays been lost either by refs or losing. Goals Miss. hockey missing up on a call and the Denver. Two Thousand Eight. It can go on and on, but it just that the culture needs a to and I. Think Tom Brady will come in and make us all to that Sadat culture. It is interesting. Go to the last year of your career I've heard Brett Farve said this. I don't want to start over again like a lot now it's different for defensive player, but when you're calling the shots in your the quarterback. I have heard people make the argument. Tom Just doesn't want to doesn't want to write another book. Get very comfortable at the end of your career I. Mean You caught? You could have played more in the. NFL was about I just don't want to. I don't want to lower my standards I. don't want to sacrifice stuff for me. It was when I looked at it. It was for standpoint of looking at it. While was mentally. I wasn't into the game the last maybe year so Maria just wasn't a burnout study habits. Wasn't the same The the excitement of the game wasn't there for me anymore. I think for me. It just got too much political for me on that side rather than enjoying the game so I think when you're looking at Tom. I think when he's coming into a, he's one. He's still wants to play, so he's forty five. He loves the game. You see the excitement that he has every single week. Preparation does he doesn't even watch the game from the sunny that he play. He starts studying the the other team right after the rather after Sunday night's game, you lost and passionate. You. Don't see that from Tom He. Sees has the passion. He still has the the thrive. Go on and go out WANNA. Win Games when he makes a mistake. You see him. Harvard on myself to make sure he doesn't make that same mistake again as just little things like that, you see him that he still has that feel wants to go out and go. Be that champion of of any football team and he goes to so we just had the combine. The draft is in late. April free agency is coming up here next week. Yes, there's a lot of different moves that are gonNA happen. In year eleven years in the NFL, you were a college. All American kind of a can't Miss Corner Ohio state's got. Jeff Okuda's kid. They say as a can't miss guy. How much should I take out of the combine? Are there guys? Blow up at the combine that you look at and. That's just a guy. That's a white room dude like. Did you know when you're in the NFL? Could you tell instantly when you saw draft picks? Come into. The team. Can't play can play. You saw from Gainesville. View. If you wash real Gamesville, you can know the guys that can play and cannot play. That can translate things that they do wanNA combine what they can't do on the field so like I. I think Coach Bruce. Aaron said that the Best Russsian I think. He said the best Outta just because you run a four three. Four six. You may around four six PM shows that you run for four is all about the film? The IRS doesn't law, so you are who you are when you put on FM Thank Jeff A coup is somebody that you can't miss that. Somebody who do not want to get a court as a corner. He's a home. He's why what does he do everything me? Technician has great footwork is understands what the officers trying to give them a release and he's willing tackler. I think that's something that you gotta willing. To put into perspective you have you have great cover corners, but most of the cover corners on like the tackle. This guy. And he's physical, he's physical. He loves the game and I think bringing him into the locker room the way that he carried himself. That I've seen so far is out Outta to his his confidence. I think that cares on until until it's a locker room and also into that DB role by the way I. Want Your opinion. Liam Simmons is a tremendous Isaiah Simmons. Excuse me is a tremendous athlete at Clemson. Some people think safety. Derwin James He's got that kind of body type. Some people think linebacker well. What am I supposed to make a guy that literally blows the combine out four three nine, but he's built like a linebacker, but he doesn't. Have a position, does that were you know? Why not because I can put my linebacker safety? You don't care I. don't care. You want the athletes. I just wanted to athlete because you let him do what he do. He GonNa. Perform the way needs to. Give them a job to do and let them go and I think that's what we as coaches like. We try to harp on what we just. We need this from this player and let them do what he let the ballplayer be the ballplayer put him in a defense and let them just go and let them build a defense around that guy. I think you can build a defense around as SMS just. In fact, he can play outside La back. He can play Middle Linebacker. Go back and go play freecell. Them here on film. When I look at them, I just think it's not that he's Jamal Adams, but it's like he's just around the ball all the time. Well, you know you're reminds me of the the late. Great Taylor just always run the ball. When you look at when you look at him, he reminds me that has the body type are big years six, two, six, three to thirty, five to thirty nine. We rent a four to three nine forty, he he reminds me of a the late grace on Taylor. I WANNA. Ask Ya. When you watch college quarterbacks, People Love Joe Borough and my take away as well. Manila had the best college personnel ever. That may have been the best college team ever when you look at Joe Berle's college tape as a guy. That may half a your career? You're a pro bowler. Do you see a star or do you see a good college quarterback at a loaded college team? No good quarterback I mean I I see a guy that can make all the right decisions. I think he's a guy that understand. The game understands where he needs to go to ball. Way Way Way wants to throw the ball. 'cause football's about doing to. The Or to say mismatch, so he knows mismatches and he wants he. He goes to a lot of stuff. That's Brady he finds the mismatch. He goes to the mismatch and he finds it had success with it and I think that's what he does well. I think you know it's only only got to see Joel. Play Job Bureau play for one year. That's that's the only thing he was great for one great for one year has numbers out of the roof bed in another quarterback in that one year, but that's the only thing that scares me about him. This is just a one year. He doesn't have a lot of reps at the quarterback position and he wasn't very good as junior year in in in that's eight hasn't lot of rubs. Wasn't that great? As junior had a great senior one, and that's championship and broke all kinds of records also. Finally Philip Rivers. You're a former charger. Is it over? No I don't think it's over. I can see Philip Plan. For, the colts can see Philip. Plan somewhere where he can actually have a chance to go out and go suppo I.

Great Taylor just.

"I'm Josh Chillin ski the financial quarterback Tom I read built to born last night stayed up late reading it it was it was a lot of fun instead of to like two thirty three AM read your book it was really interesting I loved it as an entrepreneur I really connected with you and your journey for those you don't know Tom he's the founder of paychecks so a lot of use them and get paid paid by them so for people who've never heard of you Tom what is your background obviously you're the founder of paychecks but talk a little about your story glad to judge for first so I was raised in upstate New York right outside of Rochester middle class neighborhood I went to public schools parents went through bankruptcy when I was a teenager learned some valuable lessons during that experience it was sort of an average student in high school work two year went to a state college in upstate New York Alfred track majored in business I got what I thought was a pretty good exposure to the business world through that curriculum Kim out had a couple of jobs started one enterprise called bidders guide which was a publication on municipal and school district purchasing those organizations when they sold their but anything over a thousand dollars they had advertised for bids in the newspaper well in upstate New York we had three hundred fifty weeklies in fifty three daily so I subscribe to all those newspapers clipped the bit advertisements out and notified by mail the companies that they were interested in getting the information cannot be shared a sales organization would know about every municipal purchasing their product line in the state of New York from there I went to work for payroll processing company and that's where I got the idea for paychecks most payroll processing companies in that time frame seventy six we're only interested in larger companies are larger I mean one hundred employees or more but you drive down the street anywhere in the United States of America you realize most companies have less than a hundred employees going to the library to verify that and found out ninety five percent have fifty employees are less than ninety eight percent have a hundred employees are left so as a sales person the sales manager at the time I said this is a market we should be going after I'm not sure we have the correct product for it so I came up with some ideas on how to make it more saleable to a smaller company and basically that was pretty simple one you did payroll press is seen as a large company used to have to fill out large computer input cheats and then they had to be delivered to the payroll processor and then the payroll is processed well I had the idea why not have small companies call him on the telephone you can call in the fifteen percent import tax payroll about two or three minutes but the best advantage of ideas you don't have to pay for a delivery take the time to do a delivery but also the product is going to be more accurate because you're dealing with a professional manner and the line that knows what you want to accomplish in knows how to accomplish it through our computer system secondly the biggest thing is you know if you're an employer in the United States of America you're really an unpaid tax collector and the government's have a harsh regulations and when you should make your tax payments you know I'm talking about withholding taxes now when you make those tax payments and the amount well nobody in the payroll processing business was informing the client or actually making the tax payments for the client and I added that as the second part of the service and the third thing was the charge you a rate that small companies would be willing to pay we could afford which the larger payroll processors your minimum charges were so high small companies just stayed away so those three things gave me the idea for paychecks I went to buy boss of the company I was working for and I said we should start this division fortunately they said is they didn't think it was a good idea so long story short a few months later I started paychecks Rochester New York they had three thousand dollars in a couple of credit cards which I soon lost because they couldn't keep up with the payments it is a very tough for years it took me four years to get about three hundred clients and that's basically how I got started did you ever want to give up in that four year span never first of all I hit industry knowledge which I think is very important for any entrepreneur they go to their website going to a business in the industry knowledge taught me there was a huge market for payroll processing services for small companies the smaller companies usually didn't have anybody on staff that would be knowledgeable enough to take care of that part of the business so having a service available like paychecks I just had a lot of confidence that in the long run it was gonna work that's great you talk about your best friend a lot in the book you want to talk about that a gene and his name is Jean policy in the US gene and I were high school friends and stayed friends through our entire lives and I went to Jean when they had the idea for paychecks he was running a tire store in suburban Rochester I went to him there's a gene I want to start a company called paychecks and paid ministers at the time and I have three thousand dollars can you match the three thousand dollars in command is my partner and he said now he obviously didn't have confidence in the idea plus he was concerned about the risk well over the years as I began to develop relationships with other people in the form of partnerships and franchises from nineteen seventy four and seventy nine I brought in seventeen people under these relationships gene was not one of them until near the very end in which I encouraged him to join us and moved to Cincinnati Ohio and started to check up as their leader Jean came back to Rochester as our vice president of marketing he started a training program we started our HR department he started telemarketing organization any started our HR services organization which encompass four oh one K. and workers comp and so forth so he became a very integral part of the company unfortunately passed away at a fairly young age from.

"Susan in Snellville Georgia I've been to Snellville haces on what's on your mind today Hey Tom I'm calling because I want to know whiny journalists in mainstream media can get on TV and a bit trump is an authoritarian and he's acting like a dictator but yet they won't come out in black lace say that he is a fashion where you can actually go on Google and type in trump is a fashion and find articles trying him to fascism Hitler and know the lady two thousand and fifteen you can do the same on you too when is the point where the mainstream media it is at a point where we need to educate and inform properly the people on an everyday basis of what exactly is going on and why aren't the mainstream media showing more of the resistance out on the street in Washington DC with the receipts fascism organization why aren't they putting it on TV why aren't they letting people know what is really going on I think that they don't use the word fascist schism because most Americans don't understand the history of the word fascist or from Franklin for that matter the history of fascism and the conflate Hitlerism or Nazism with fascism and they're really different things Hitler used fascism and Hitler was a fascist alternately but fascism started with Mussolini you know for five years before Hitler rose to power in in in Italy and you know it's the merger of the corporate corporations and and state power effectively Mussolini dismissed the entire Italian parliament and said instead of voters sending representatives to the Italian parliament each in each parliamentary district can rock the equivalent of a congressional district for us the largest corporation would send a representative and so it became the chamber a fascist corporations was the the the you know he as he renamed the problem but because people conflated with Hitler ism I don't think you're ever going to hear the mainstream media the corporate media in the United States I use the word fascist to describe trump that's really sad yeah but but I you know I'm I'm I'm quite sure that that's the case Susan thank you very much for the call I I agree with you by the way I think your spot on thank you corky Chester New York K. corky what's up hello John yeah I I I want to share he people are calling about Joe Biden well no went to jail for pot knees upset the Biden played a role in that yeah all right well date one person yes Karen how many millions out there right but my point is Joe Biden knows who's the bodies are buried he knows where the cherished in which Paul K. because I'm trying to undo I've only seen black hole down the debt and in his curry you gone far beyond what the actual bomb your debt and I think he gave trump well desire look at that Joe Biden can go back and put back together everything that was broken so your argument for Biden.

"Tom I got a call the mail it's my duty I met this is my mom's dealer I have to get credit for that she is totally fearless and kind of inspired add this trait and I went over to his home and he asked me to pitch to him ideas that I had around interventions where behavioral science could improve public policy outcomes what do you tell him and I talked about a number of things like the importance of using social norms to motivate behavior so we know from research that if you tell people that their neighbors use less energy than they do right they're more likely to use less energy and there's a lot of domains in which just telling people what the data shows about people's actions and decisions can actually drive actions that are more in alignment with people's long term goals are with policy objectives and something that struck me about that conversation is I had been talking for years with my academic colleagues about the potential applications out of using behavioral insights to improve people's lives and this is the first time that when I told him an idea that I had his response was all we can find a way to do that when I interviewed Maya in the fall of twenty fifteen president Obama had just signed an executive order announcing that the White House was going to build behavioral insights into policy Maya became senior adviser for the social and behavioral sciences at the White House and in her new role she was able to work on snap the school lunch project that had initially so inspired her I also do explain what they were working on so we have been working with the US department of agriculture and also local school districts to redesigned communications that they're sending to families to help promote the verification process so that their kids can stay on the benefit so we've done a few things if you behave on sites of used one is we've taken a very long list of it out action steps required for verification and condense them into three easy to understand steps that you can take to we work with school districts to translate the communications into multiple languages in order to support comprehension among the diverse population that this program serves one issue is that at present families my only think the way to recertify or to verify their information is to send snail mail back to the school district and instead there's the opportunity for them to take a picture of their information using their mobile phones and actually email it back and we simply notify people of the opportunity to go through that process and then in other instances we included prepaid envelopes to help ease the process of verifying eligibility so I I'm trying to think about why it is we often have trouble sort of thinking about programs like this because of someone who's been interested in human behavior for a while it seems to me that programs like these really are you know no pun intended a no brainer that this is really something that we should be doing it seems obvious that we should be doing it but but I think part of the issue is I think many people might say if you want to stay in a program that's giving you benefits and these are the steps you need to do in order to get the benefits and you deserve those benefits rationally speaking you should be willing to do those steps in order to get the benefits and I think it fails to take into account the difference between how human beings are supposed to behave as rational creatures and how they actually behave and I feel like that's the central divide that your work is trying to bridge and I think additionally you know the onus is on the government to present information clearly to present choices clearly so that people understand what program exists and what their options are and can make the best decisions for themselves and their families but there's one example that I wanted to point to which is a phenomenon known as summer melt this is the phenomenon what talented high school students who are on track to go to college at the start of the summer somehow lose their way and don't show up at college in the fall my and her team have worked on simple low cost interventions that can help the students get to college their idea send the students eight text messages over the summer reminding them of impending deadlines what we found was a nine percent increase in college enrollment rates as a result of the text messages I mean that is it really profound eight text messages as what I send my best friends on any given day it seems to me that what you did and what happened to you is actually happens to lots of people all the time where doors close and they feel like it's unbearable that the store is closed because this is where I thought I lived and then another door opens and you realize there are actually many many houses in which we can live I think that's exactly right and I think you know one thing that violin one one of the great blessings of playing the violin is that it allowed me.
