"The brewers tomorrow against the cubs. Then some gnarly weather in the Phoenix area Forty-five and rain kind of the norm this week. So it looks to be improved at temperatures tomorrow somewhere in the high fifty s with some sun. So Aston your thought of a rain out for? Cactus league game number one. I think we're clear that at least I hope anyway as a brewers fans anxious to hear brewers baseball back on the air drilling is on the line right now read his stuff in Bleacher report, he covers major league baseball the inside and out happy to connect with Scott Miller hits got. How you doing tonight on a Friday night, I'm doing well. So you're hanging with me. So we're both in a party. Yeah. That I will say I was listening to the intro. And I am currently making the rounds in spring training the grapefruit league, I'm at Florida. Okay. So I drove I was with the Mets today. Drove across the state to Tampa. So to set up shop here for a few days with the Yankees and the raised over there. Well, yeah. That area. Yeah. I yeah. I may go. Yeah. Yeah. I'll see the Yankees and the Phillies. So I'm here for a few days. But I bring that up because as I said, let's report of forty five in Arizona. And I can report I always ask when I get my rental car. It never hurts to ask. I say do you happen to have a convertible? I could got lucky this time. They got a Camaro convertible shocking. So I I tell you I draw across the state today. Top down. It's ninety degrees here in Florida. It was it's unbelievable. It's like high eighties to ninety for the past week while those poor souls of the cactus league, Tom hotter. Court and company are chipping ice off of their windshields in the morning. Tom has a quota of ten weather tweets per day. Any is exceeded this quota each day's Maradona. Yeah. I imagine. It sounds just dreadful. It's not baseball weather, certainly not spring training. You know, the one difference. I think what the cactus league is that. You don't have to drive clear across the state to see a game. That's one of the deals with Florida's. It seems pretty spread out now. Yeah. That's why everybody players and writers all seem to prefer the cactus league for that reason. Yeah. I mean every the fifteenth teams in the feet are on the Phoenix area. There used to be a couple of down in Tucson, which I always laugh because I drive all around Florida like at three weeks put two thousand miles on the rental car, then I get their Zona. And like guys writers would be complaining if their team played down in Tucson the next day, which was you know, two hour drive each way. Yeah. It's now that there's nobody in Tucson, everybody's within about a forty five minute drive each other. That's about the longest drive in Phoenix. Whereas here the driver. State today that I referenced port St. Lucie over to tap. It's about a three hour drive. And was I hit a bad accident that snarled traffic. It took me four hours to get across the state. So yeah, when I do get the Phoenix next month. It'll be like vacation on short drive a short drives everyday. Well, by then maybe teams will be used to this whole pitch clock thing. Major league baseball coming out officially with the announcement today. I think we all saw this coming twenty second pitch clock will be implemented for grapefruit and cactus league games. Do you see this being implemented for the regular season? Scott. You know, I think they're going to see how it goes in the spring. But yeah, I won't I won't be surprised if they implemented for the regular season. I mean, they I, and I know that it's going to do much. I other than aggravates people. Commissioner rob Manfred is doing his best. He's trying to figure out ways to lessen the time. I think there's a misconception. I think generally speaking people think that baseball still trying to get games to go under three hours. And while I think that some people think that would be nice they kinda there's been a subtle shift now and Manfred now they're trying to lessen the dead time during games not so much trying to get under that three hour. Like that's a magic number. They've got other issues now. And that's you know, first time last year more strikeouts than hits in baseball. Balls put in play an average of only once every four and a half. Then that's it's all or nothing games homerun in just so much dead time. And so that's what he's trying to address more than the time of game is the pace of the game. That's why the twenty second pitch clock. And you know, I think it's mostly fluff. I don't know that it's gonna move things along maybe. But I go back to remember. Is it maybe three years ago? You know, they said batters couldn't leave the batter's box between pitches. You know, you had remember you had to keep at least one foot in the only time, you could leave the batter's boxes if you follow the ball off. Then you could take a quick walk and reset yourself. But otherwise one foot had to stay in the batter's box at least in between pitches and that lasted like one season and everybody seems to have forgotten about that. I think that's probably what's going to happen to the twenty second pitch clock. Brought it up and I last segment and. There's nothing that has to be installed for the battery in the batter's box. Right. That's just a judgment call by the empire. And I talked to Ryan Braun with that that rule came. And he said, look, I'm going to do my thing. You know, you're not gonna hurry me up at the plate. And my feeling is that if it's the eighth inning and there's a runner on second. And you're staring down the barrel of dangerous hitter pitcher needs to do everything he can to get that guy out. So is this rule to say that the pitcher can't look, and maybe there's a mix up on sign, of course, signs dealing is a big deal and major league baseball to and then step off after eighteen like how is that gonna work functionally? Yeah. And and I don't I don't have a black and white answer for you on that other than that's exactly why they put these things in during spring training first. And then decide if it will work for the season, you know, they'd otherwise they pretty much you intend to take it for test run. One thing that aside from the players basic attitude being exactly what Ryan Braun told you on the batter's box thing. They're like, look this is our livelihood. This is what we've been doing for our whole lives. This is important. I don't wanna be rushed. I understand we need to move the game along. But when I'm at the plate. I'm not gonna like step in and, you know, try to hit when I'm not ready. This is too important for that. And the pitchers think the same way. So they're already are are kind of come into this role with a chip on their shoulder. And then the other thing is is you know, beyond that is that they. They don't like they don't want to have to rush. And and and they they're unintended consequences. That's what I'm trying to spit out right there. They never know what the unintended consequences are of a rule change at. That's what the players are especially wary of as well. And I think we've seen it with replay. I mean, you know, when they put replay in everything was supposed to be well and good. I it was just homerun calls, and then they put it to the basis, but you know, what happened with replay. You know, we got the thing where there's a bang bang play at second base guy slides agai tags him. He's safe the guy holds the tag for a few extra seconds. The guy comes off the bag just by half an inch in you can't even see it with the naked eye but replay catches and he's called out. I mean that to me is still ridiculous. And that that's an example of an unintended consequence of a well-intentioned rule. And that that's you know, so we'll see what happens during spring training with the twenty second pitch clock. Scott Miller believes a report baseball insider and writer joining us on sports central presented by Miller lite over one hundred free agents, still looking for work Marlin Gonzales, signing today, like was DACA signed last week by the brewers Manny Machado off the boards. Still some pretty big names out there, Scott, I asked Mike was doc is this a couple of nights ago. I asked him if the system were broken you didn't go exactly that far. But he is clearly of the camp that has bothered by the system in in. What has happened to the system? What has happened to the system? How did we get to this point? Yeah. How we got to this point is players pretty much had become accustomed to. And this is all gonna be relative terms. They've become accustomed to their first six years in the majors when they're under club control to being underpaid. That's the relative term because I know major league minimums like five hundred thousand or so a lot of people would say, what do you mean underpaid? And I get it. That's a lotta money but relatively speaking. Compared to what their market value would be on the free agent market. They're underpaid. When they're when they're young players in the club has the hammer. Now that's systems Ben in place for decades since free agency came in and the players understand. That's fine. You know, I might have won the most valuable player in the league award third year in the game. And I still don't have that many rights the club pays pays me. But that's okay. Because when I become a free agent, then I'll make what I should be making. In other words, they kind of get a relatively speaking players were used to getting underpaid early and then making it up in spades to the point of being overpaid later. So what's happened? Now is the analytical movement has taken over the game. And you could argue clubs have gotten a lot smarter. They're not general managers. Now don't make emotional decisions to try to win the winter. You know, go out and sign a giant contract fans get behind instead, it's all looked at the analytics, and you have thirty front offices now pretty much valuing players in a similar manner. And the overriding things that everybody agrees on now. Is. Once a player hits thirty thirty one and beyond the place starts to deteriorate. So what happens? That's a that's the as well. A lot of guys get the free agency. Well, now analytics is telling teams don't pay it's stupid to pay big money because you're not gonna get productive return for your money. So they're deciding to go with more and more young kids. And that's why a lot of the veteran. Free agents are being are being side right now because you know, you might say there's a market adjustment going on and the contracts they were able to score for decades now with the analytical bat, they're not. And so far the agents, you know, and the players haven't accepted that it's changed or at least they're fighting this change. And that's where we are. Do you think the brewers are being undervalued even after the signing of Mike was is in use Monte Grondahl? Undervalued you mean in terms of like, the look at the landscape of the NFL central in your the reds have maybe the most interesting off season the cubs sweeping changes. But they get you Darvish back. And you know, I think the idea of adding a Paul Goldschmidt the cardinals at certainly pleasing to them. The pirates are interesting, I guess, it seems like the projections have the brewers somewhere in that mid eighty range or even lower. Do you think they're being undervalued or under appreciated? You know, I I think I think maybe a little bit of Baltic. What's kind of interesting to me on? This is is the projections that have them in the mid eighties. Now, the brewers have become a very app they become really heavy analytics team right there front office. You know, they're big on analytics, I would say.

Of key yes and and get out of there with, a win and that's what they did The brewers pitching it's almost been. A tale, of two seasons they were, so good in the first half they've been struggling certainly in. The, I guess the second half of the season or. Certainly the month of August In your opinion which one's the. Outlier what we, saw in, the first half of the season or what we're seeing right now It's hard to say you know I think injury had a lot to. Do it, especially in the. Bullpen with the starting rotation has definitely has? Slipped in recent weeks and, with the exception of Chelsea I. Mean he's been fantastic how about his two starts on that trip seven. Slipped a little bit so it's yeah, they need to. Get their starting. Pitching because that's where it all starts the whole region the cardinals, ward back into the, race their starting pitching he's been fantastic and so the birds need to stabilize their pitching But but you, know what they gotta start getting some clutch hits to you know the offense has been culpable in some of these. For each of the last three years with Tampa Bay he's not having the greatest year though this series three and five with an IRA over four and there's a bidding war.
