But that was a great football team In in a team that was is elite as it gets and now here. We are ten years later and they won the championship last year. But a lot of things off the field. A lot of things going on you know you. You always felt like there at the end of his tenured. Lsu that there was a lot of people. They're out to get him. When i say out to get him that wanted to move on. I just felt like they could do better. But as you know you know the sec. As well as anybody yeses. He thinks they can do better. Except for maybe in tuscaloosa And i think the some of the political forces around lsu sorta helpless. We're on his side to leave. Certainly it and four games the sixteen season they got it in. You heard jimbo. Fisher's name all sorts of aim. Tom herman the end up with a lot of people felt like that was never going to work with all the old winter national championship last year and really a great job assembling people going out and getting staff around in but now here we are off the field with this complete invested in investigation. He was the Washington Huskies defensive coordinator Seven seasons there. He actually was with Chris Peterson and Boise State and went across With him there, and I'm going to say surprising higher now, so I had. I didn't know his name, obviously until you know hours ago, But everybody so far has said that this guy is among the elite of the elite and defensive coordinators. There were some big names that you know the guy out of Georgia. We talked about Zach Arnett from Mississippi State. The Alabama defensive coordinator was a possible he would follow as well. So kind of a surprise, higher at least because I hadn't heard this name in the pool there. But everybody you know is is praising. Start for forgetting this guy where you guys surprised by this, but I just had my head in the ground or, you know, I take somebody names were out there. And that I'm happy. I don't know anything about it, but I know he has was a great defensive coordinator. The things I like about this staff is he's getting coaches from power. Five conferences. People who know who know how to coach who's been at the highest level, so I think that's a great asset. But I thought that they're gonna get to Georgia Guy landing, but they didn't do it. But this guy seemed a really, really good I was. Yeah, I was up late last night when Longhorn Twitter was kind of percolating that this might happen and then Oh, you know, now we're targeting. So I did look into him, But I'm just guy always just lean on. People who are more jack than I've ever seen them be for reasons that they can provide. Does that make sense? It's not just being like, Oh, we got this new guy. They're pretty. They're pretty stoked and jacked about what he has done. The people that he's helped get to the NFL, So it's not just like a defensive mind. It also comes down to which I've seen almost on every coaching, hire, recruiting as well. Yeah. Look, I'm gonna give Sarkin a plus plus on the assembly of this staff, because he sort of you know he's filled in the blanks with all of his weak spots. Blind spots. If you will. A guy who's never coached in Texas, he goes out gets Jeff Banks the recruiting coordinator from that he was with an Alabama there who Gideon and you're like idiots who, you know, coach Texas A and M was their recruiting coordinator for for so many years. And so, yeah, he's you know, he's covered his bases with recruiting. Stark is an offensive guy. He gets a top of the line defensive coordinator. I love it. I love it. I am just I am wondering. We are in this. We're in an unbelievable honeymoon phase right now. And Vito is I absolutely all about it. I just is this honey, is that is this truly better than it was with Tom Herman and whatever that was 2017. We were dressed. We were doing this show together. Beato in 2017. "They're great with their former players. They were great with the fans. It is a situation where you gotta wear a lot of hatch. You've got to go to that barbecue and bass drop and be a great person and then go to a board room in Houston and be that same person and people can't do that. Tom Herman didn't do a good job, but that Charlie Strong didn't do a good job, but that John Mack of it didn't do a good job at that. But Mack Brown did an extraordinary job of wearing different hats. And, as he said, putting all the babies back in the box, that's that's what being a coach here is because You're gonna you're gonna have somebody mad at you. Every stinking day. You're gonna have somebody you're gonna have people out there who think they know more than you do, And they think you'll have people out there who expect to have a say just because they give money to buy a sweet or give millions of dollars for the expansion of DK are You think they're stakeholder? That's that's the problem. I think well have at this university, but I don't know that you can reverse that problem. I think if you're the head coach, it is your job. Wouldn't Mack Brown say this? You know, you could have knocked me down with a feather. First of all, I was exceedingly surprised that he got fired of the other morning the day after what we have when it would Saturday. I was shocked because Krystal contact had led us to believe he was going to be the coach in 2021 Crystal cont a talk to the to the new recruits and said, Hey, Tom, Herman is going to be your coach. Don't worry. Don't worry. And then Tom Herman goes out and the team blows the doors off Colorado, maybe maybe his best win in Texas. Yeah, maybe his best best win it Texas and I thought I thought Thomas secure for another year. We saw a glimpse of be John and Casey Thompson and over shown on defense. I thought, well, this is You know, let's get it done. Let's let's just get it done. But Wow, I was absolutely shocked about that. And then let me just say I was doubly shocked. Five hours later, when Steve Sarkisian got the job as head coach of the University of Texas, I was Flabbergasted about that decision. I am shocked at that decision. Let me let me preface. I wish him well, I wish him well, but I'm scratching my head over this higher. Steve Sarkisian is an excellent play caller for Alabama. But Jason, you and I and Vito could call place for Alabama with the players they have. Let's be brutally honest. Steve Sarkisian was an average head coach at Washington. He got fired for drinking at USC, and then he's been under the arms of Nick Saban. Ever since he was he was in Atlanta for two years as a ineffective offensive play caller on end of offensive coordinator So he gets this job and I'm a first inclination was y Steve Sarkisian. But I think I know why we could get in later. But I'm really, really shocked that this all went down. After I've been telling people I give this higher, maybe a B in baseball things. It's a It's a single runner headed the second base, but no, this is not a home run. I think Texas trades apples for apples. When they hired Tom Herman. They got the former offensive play caller for Urban Meyer. Now Texas gets the play caller from Nick Saban. And here we go again. And one other thing. I know I'm dominating. Not good for you. Let me just say this. It's finally and listen. I've been follow along or football a long time. Texas is a mid level program. Jason. It's not an elite program anymore. We're not an elite program anymore. I hate to say, and I fought callers and people saying You let the outside influence the inside of the 40 acres. And you know what? I fought that enough off that, But you know what? They're right. This program is dominated by rich moose tres That's what it is, and rich boosters got what they wanted over the weekend. But to me this is apples for apples in my excited about this. No, I'm not excited about this at all. And part of me feels real sorry for Tom Herman getting lied to by the athletic department and those recruits getting lied to by the athletic department and the assistant coaches who now have to pack up and leave. When we talk about the job at Texas, All of it revolves around the boosters, and you have to be able to talk and schmooze with the boosters right because they carry so much weight and They're really the ones behind the decisions being made. And there is so much to that because you're not just taking the head coaching job in Texas to be an ex isn't Oh's guy. And, yes, Stark. Is that true? Because of what he's able to do it Alabama and just in his past, I mean, he's a brilliant offensive mind. But there is this aspect of it where you have to be a politician, But I think the part that people miss and I was told this story. Remember who followed Charlie Strong from Global to Texas when he took the job and then also was retained on Tom Herman staff when he came in was The connection in the relationships you have to have with the local high school head football coaches in the state of Texas. There's this God complex with a lot of these coaches at the high school level who feel Like they deserve consideration for this head coaching job at Texas. Where is they can't fathom that they would bring somebody from the outside in to take over that job until immediately. You're on the defense because these coaches View you as an outsider. They don't think that you're worthy of the job, and therefore they don't help you recruit in state talent. And so that was Kind of eye opening to me when Charlie Strong took the job because I remember being friends with a lot of people on staff at that time and just family friends until we asked, how's it going? The response that we got every time was. You have no idea how challenging it is to recruit kids from the state of Texas right in our backyard because they don't believe in coach strong now. I don't know if that changed when coach Herman came in, and they viewed him or as one of them one of their own. But I think it's a factor that people don't consider a part of the equation. When you're looking at who can be successful being the head coach at Texas I think Mack Brown has this ability to relate to everyone and make you feel part of it and draw you in. So therefore I feel like he had success with these local high school coaches. But if you don't have that ability You're gonna be starting well behind the start gate. And I just think that the high school coaches play a large factor in this equation that people don't really talk about. And I think Sam Macho brought that point up and it was great to hear. And that's why it's interesting to see Sarkeesian not necessarily known as the big politician, but he is known for being an extra dose guy and I will say this I did see a lot of people say, Well, you know what Texas is just left for dead. It will never be anything different than Nebraska. And that's factually wrong. The difference is now is that Texas can have those recruits. They're in that that pipeline of recruiting talent. However, like you said, you have to have the exes and Oh's. I think now at some point you can see what's Turkey's in did at Alabama and say This is why you need to be here. Also kind of gonna be interesting to remember the transfer. You'll have one time transfers more than likely coming up next year, and everybody just had a free your eligibility. "Very much in the college football playoff discussion, neck and neck with Oklahoma for a lot of the season. To now, go to a group of five team that we saw a couple of years ago even on Houston's best day when things are breaking right for them in that Tom Herman era was still a fringe contender. Best for college football's ultimate prize. They don't want to put a group of five team in the college football playoff. But that's the reality. I think they beat Oklahoma that year didn't they? I mean, and they still didn't get inaugarated lost some games down the stretch. But they put the others good season as you could probably have with the schedule. They had which was very difficult. They won games against high quality teams just perplexing to me. It kind of reminds me a couple of about five four or five years ago when Tommy Super Bowl left, Texas Tech to go to Cincinnati and thinking you left the big twelve. A group of five school.
