"I'm not, you know, I didn't, I didn't play with him. He was not around. I hear different stories about Tommy Einstein. I just how good he was. My only recollection is that is one. I saw a movie with called the green book. I think it was the green book, wasn't it? Yeah, it was green book. And the green book and they talked about it was a book about people of color during the 60 50s and the 60s if they wanted to go to a hotel. They had a green book which gave them segregated hotel rooms that they could go to in different towns. And it was a famous concert pianist who was in New York who was touring the entire south. And he was using the green book to go around and he finally got to say Birmingham, Alabama sub. He was going into a restaurant. He wanted to eat because he was playing there. And they went in the line to go there and the restaurant owner said, yeah, but let me just tell you a story. He said, the world famous Boston Celtics won the world championship and they came through here and they're big kahuna and he was talking about Bill Russell a that. And the guy said, and he looked at him and then he said, I don't know, but I could tell you what it wasn't here. And that made me really feel like, wow, that what a story that is of the shoulders of a giant that I have stood on. When I look at him, I look at Tom heinsohn, I look at, especially the guys of color who played during that time. Casey Jones, Sam Jones, who told the story to me how he was so quick with everything. He said, I want to say Fort Wayne Indiana someplace that he beat all the guys to the lunch counter and he gets there with his tray and the lady looks at and looks at him since sir, I can't serve you. So what do you mean? He said, we don't, we don't serve blacks here. We don't serve colors here. And he said, he was just demoralized about how that was. And he said, cozy in them, they end up bringing food to him from that particular restaurant. And it's just strange because again, here those players were entertaining the masses, but the masses would not allow them allowed them to eat in the same restaurant. I think that's where Sam they all left. Didn't they? They boycotted Russell Sam Casey. That's when they came home and said go home. When they boycotted, I'm pretty sure. I don't know if and I know red is that kind of person he was, he was about protecting people and all that, but I don't remember a story like that where he stood this ground and said, look, we're not going to play. You're going to get the video next because you'll love that story. It's an interesting one. I got another question. Any Rick Barry sightings? I was a Rick. In his own mind, Rick Barry is every place, okay? You know who I did see. I'm sure you saw him too out there, max. I can't think of his name. Great. Good time. Who is it? Bill Walton, Bill Walton. He was in the press conference room, just sitting there taking it in, laughing. I was like, what is this guy doing? Everybody loves Walton. I always tells me all the time, oh my God, max. Thank you. You thank you for giving your life for me. Getting traded to the clippers, you gave your basketball life..

"During the riots, it said, all we want you to do is like us back. And that resonate denied as a coach, but as a human being and it worked so far out. So I think part of his persona is bigger than the game itself. I don't think he's the best coach in the world. I think he's the long ways from the worst coach in the world, but I think his overall persona has made him one of those top coaches we talked about. All right, this one is much more, I don't know, hits home with you maybe. I'm sure you've thought about this. I'm sure you've seen it all on social media, whether to maybe talk to your friends or even grandy about it on the air I'm not sure. So again, this weeks ago, but I haven't had you on that. I'm a jump the gun here. I'm not one of the top 15 Celtics of all time. All right, listen, whether or not you believe you are. Whether or not you believe you are. The Celtics put out did I jump the gun then? Well, you did jump the gun. But that's okay because there's more here. So here was the list for anyone that missed it. In no particular order. Larry Bird, Paul Pierce, Dave cowens, Kevin Garnett, Tom heinsohn, Kevin McHale Robert parish, Bill Russell, bob cousy, Dennis Johnson, Sam Jones, Bill sharman, John havlicek, JoJo white, I lied. It wasn't a particular order. I saved this one for last. Ray Allen. This list came out and everybody, everybody, almost universally reacted and went. What? Ray Allen. I mean, only guy in the list doesn't have his number in the rafters. You have your number in the rafters. Garnett will have his number in the rafters. I don't think ray will I really don't believe that. Nor do I believe he should, by the way, which is a that's an entirely different conversation. But Ray Allen being on the top 15, you want to say like, just based on their NBA careers, sure. You know, like you and I have had that conversation about Garnett before. But if we're talking about what they did in a Celtics uniform, top 15 Celtics of all time, so many people reached out to me when I tweeted this list after the Celtics put it out on Twitter saying like, how in the world is Cedric Maxwell and there were a couple other people that were named as well. But how in the world is Cedric Maxwell not on this list before Ray Allen. I'm asking you, Cedric Maxwell, how are you not on this list before reality? Even if you don't think you should be on the list, you got to admit you're on the list before ray. No, I really don't. I love Ray Allen. And the reason I love Ray Allen's because I see Ray Allen is me. Being one of those guys that you actually forgot how good he was. The Boston Celtics when they got together, it wasn't a big two. It wasn't Paul. It wasn't Kevin. It was rate included in that. And I think he goes by the wayside for that. One of the greatest shooters, the.

"Recreation of pamela. What are you reading these days. Well i recently read a book. That i'm just gonna say flat out is one of the best narrative nonfiction books books by journalists. I've ever read. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I urge everyone to read this book. Even if they're not interested in the subject on the surface of the book is called. The outlaw ocean journeys across the last untamed frontier by ian. Urbina who's a former investigative reporter for the new york times. He was here for seventeen years. I actually never met him although he was on the podcast. When this book came out in twenty nineteen this book is about maritime law the lack of maritime law and the abuses of nearly nonexistent maritime law which is to say you know most of the earth as we know is covered with ocean and move of that ocean is not governed by anyone. Anyone i mean there are some loose. International agreements and laws that no one is able to or willing or has the money or desire sometimes to enforce and therefore is a enormous cesspool of international crime. That goes on that everyone is aware takes place and very little is done about it and so there is slavery at sea. There is of course piracy which is probably the thing that we've heard most about people know. Captain phillips people think about somalia but that piracy is all over the place. That piracy is what you would expect. Which is it's theft at sea. And why wouldn't it be rampant because there are no police officers out there. There is no cia fbi. There's there's no one that can cover the huge vast stretches of ocean where all of this crime takes place illegal. Fishing is just one of the many issues in the book that's covered and what you find out will absolutely apol- you not just in terms of the environmental devastation. But the exploitation of workers and exploitation in terms of indentured servitude in terms of outright slavery physical and emotional abuse the conditions that we sometimes read about in developing nations with regard to factory conditions are nothing compared to what it is at. See the detail in this book. I could talk about this for a very long time. I'll say a few things specifically about what makes it so good. It's not just the subject matter. It's the way in which are being structures. His story unlike some journalists where a book is kind of created based off a series of articles. It always feels like a coherent whole. You never feel like okay. And now we're at the next story that he reported and he very definitely inter we behind the scenes. How i did this. He doesn't overly rely on the first person narrative. It doesn't feel like an egotistical book. He explains you might be wondering how. I got this person to talk to me or you may be wondering how i got aboard this vigilante ship. That's going after illegal poachers because you know government will away. He gets them. It's like i. It's worthy of a movie. And then the other thing that i think makes it so powerful is that it's a little bit like when the movie apollo thirteen was being made. I remember there was some kind of interview with ron howard. The director with tom heinsohn which they said we made the decision. Not to embellish this at all because the simple facts of what happened are so insane that it's hard enough to believe as it is like. There's just no reason to exaggerate. And that's the way this book feels. It feels like very responsible. There's no exaggeration if anything it is very low key and yet for nonfiction book i found it to be one of the most cage ternary books. I have read in a long time. I stayed up late reading. I woke up early to read. I was reading in the middle of the night. So there you have it. The outlaw ocean. I know you've read a great deal of reported nonfiction. So if you're saying it's one of the best things at that's a huge recommendation. It is so good. I i basically. If you don't even if you don't care about the ocean you should read. This book is what i'm saying but let's run on the titles of we already. I read diary of a country priest by his yours bernandinos. I read the magician by collin. Toby and i read the outlaw ocean journeys across the last untamed frontier by ian urbina. Remember there's more. Ny times dot com slash books and you can always write to us at books at ny. Times dot com. I write back not right away. But i do the book. Podcast is produced by the greed. Pietro rossato from head stubborn media with a major assist for my colleague john williams. Thanks for listening for the new york. Times i'm pamela paul..

"Four assists a game which was his career high will. That's that's just like too good. Yeah nobody could deal with that. And that was the only mvp one but he also led the league by making fifty seven percent of his shots. Unguardable right okay. So if i take that shack that was the greatest center i ever saw. And i listen i was courtside for a whole bunch of kareem games and a whole bunch of akeem games and i watched bill russell a lot on television. I did not go to his games in wilt a barely saw and i just see the numbers. And there i mean he got numbers skip. You might just take him out. Nobody rookie ever going to average thirty seven points a game. Nobody's ever going to score fifty. Nobody go forty four. Every twenty five rebounds every twenty three rebounds for career. That's never going to happen. Skip those records. Never be broken. Never ever ever avenue at six feet. Nine inches tall kept playing seven foot. One inch wilt chamberlain the big dipper. Who kept out playing. I don't know if he played him. Skip i just think he needed easy out will give you got to think about here. Sam jones casey jones. Tom heinsohn. Yeah cousy havlicek on nelson dog. I got that. But i'm just doing it. In my mind's eye jack woulda terrorized wilt. I do you took a sample size. But if you take the body of work you look at kareem. Kareem was levin type all defense. He was a fifteen time all nba player. Nineteen all star six times. Mbh sam a fixed. Nbp's got it leans score of burning. Love it all head to head in their primes could not have dealt with shaquille. O'neal hook is is the jordan we can tell by katie pulo. We can talk about kobe. Fade away the. Most unstoppable shot that god ever created a man to be able to do. Who's the skyhook jack with bothered him. Then shock woulda terrorized him. He would have had such a hard time because the physicality of it would've taken cream slowly but surely out of the game. My money would have been on shack every day. And every night against kareem ir l. creams game. I got it. It was a finesse game. Yes it was a pretty game it was with. This was ugly basketball court. Give me was thirty. Two and sixteen to look. This was the golden era of the big man kareem hurricane robinson shack patrick ewing rick smith. Rick smits the was the golden era. We'll never see another. You will never see another air. Like one game for your life. I want check. No no no one game for your life is kareem who taken. I won't take korean. You are night and thinking career. Four six at three thirty. Yes but skip. Do your best thing. People don't realize how great kareem was. Now they do know all time leading your free but when it comes when we start talking about my rushmore. He always gives left off beitar jordan. Imagine bird lebron. I get all that skipped subtle in his greatness that yes subtle. It's like not sensation. Say no you know. He didn't have no celebration. Who's got hooked skipping. He just back up the court you know. He had shot. With duncan. old people had the power with dunkin's shove people. You know jordan withholding the polls. Toby fading away bird. L. greene was effortless. Almost to the point of it looked nonchalant. Yes yeah i mean he he thought the hoop shop and fifteen feet away and it's got it. He wanted every level. He loves one game at highs. Go to games in college. I got it he got. Do you think somebody will ever win six. Mvp doubt it. And i still want the diesel skill if shack that used imagine if you could have got ten years of the three years you're talking about and you could have it sad to no seriously the greatest. Nobody can do anything with larry bird that he was he was before he came out. Larry bird so he probably in the nba right now. Yeah he he would. You'd never again no. I don't think so either beggary. No agents were pulled by the athletic about the most surprising decision of the off season deck prescott's four year. One hundred sixty million dollar contract after suffering a broken ankle. Last year was tied for the most votes. One agent said quote. The cowboys were willing to give him that. Without a franchise or transition tag is basically. Let him hold them hostage or years from now team standpoint. It doesn't make a lot of sense shannon. These deals done with two years left on their contract and that didn't get a deal done as he's not gonna take the same money they gave. Bill you say is a golf went. He's not going to do it. He's there because he saw those franchise with two years left the fourth year and the year option. They went out and expanded him. Neither one of those guys are currently on the team. So dad was like y'all. I mean they were first round pick first and second. They got two years left. I got one year. Ain't nobody gonna talk to me. Don't worry about it. So he said you know what. I'll play this franchise tag now have to our play. Next year franchise tag at thirty eight million. Do you want thirty eight million on your cap. And then the following you're going to be fifty plus so skip. They really didn't have a choice because they put themselves in a buying by kept pushing pushing the ball down the road kicking the can down the road. It's like okay. We'll see if he's good and guess what that play good again. Well let's see if you can do it again. He did it again so they really didn't have a choice in the matter skill and looking at the cab heading this about to be a bargain. "Where unlike middleton i feel like middleton like booker like chris paul knows where his spots are breaking roll and i think drew was kind of taking what the defense gives him and i think that just that just puts his sons defense especially eight. But i mean they're all kinds of their conservative and deceptive. You know they want you to take. Low percentage shots. So they're going to try to go into those And withdrew going the row of okay. Let's he's kind of just seeing how much closer he can get to the rim essentially and that's just a great way miss layups over deandre eytan essentially. That's kind of. That's kind of what's been happening to him. All series as opposed to like you know middleton just being a little bit more methodical. But i agree with jackie honestly. I just think he's doing a law is the set. This is going to go six. At least it might go seven. I think you wanna use him to just try to wear down chris. Paul and booker in whatever you can get from him like considered a bonus but honestly like it's like what you said. Jackie when you have when you have that type of mentality or shooting stroke or whatever you wanna call it Maybe it's just a moment of self. Del like whatever it is. You can't guarantee that that guy is always gonna be consistent. Like i don't really necessarily want to be running much stuff for him Honestly i would lean if you need to lean even more heavily on middleton and pick and roll like. I feel like that's a big reason. They also didn't turn the ball over very much He was just he was just really good in it So yeah. I think don't know i just i just feel like drew. Holiday deserves a bit of a defense. I get that. He's not shooting well and everybody is kind of focused on that. But it's just he's doing so much like full court press in the nba finals for a whole game. Like try squatting down that low for like for like five seconds you know like for me five seconds but like it's just yeah it's it's it's really incredible. He's also he's creating a ton of points with his steals like he's he's creating good offense for them. It's just not in the way that you know Chris paul or booker or middleton does sense sear. it still hasn't been line for finals be potentially with two big games may be st. I had a. He was nine to one before the finals. But it does seem. I guess jaanus or booker now. The way this series is yeah. Those would be yeah you to candidates. Hey some folks are quick to doubt the rookies or even understate. Their excellence their playoff series. Make no mistake. This is their time to shine and show out with career defining moments on that court. Here's a famous on minna. Go way back for your thinking about. Overlooked rookies Tom heinsohn who passed away recently. legendary celtics announcer hall of famer really great underrated player but as a rookie. Nineteen fifty seven celtics. The celtics had never won. The title goes to a game seven against the saint. Louis hawks bob cousy is terrible. Bow cousy goes to for twenty. Can't make a shot. He got bill russell. He's a rookie. Not totally an offensive player. He's only scored nineteen They need a hero. And who's the hero. Holy cross his own. Tommy heinsohn rookie puts up thirty seven points. Twenty three rebounds seventeen for thirty three Was awesome and fouls out in double. Ot what happens to this game goes to double ot heinsohn vows out. Famous shot of him crying on the sidelines. Can't believe he found out at the celtics end up winning the game in the last minute. They win by two. He gets carried off the court. There's a famous photo of him All these people surrounding him. It's one of the great rookie moments of all times in the finals. You heard about magic in nineteen eighty heard about some other ones but i think that was the first great one and that's a wrap. Just like these rookies like tommy heights at one on the court you can win with your insurance getting the personalized service of a local agent offer. Surprisingly great rate with state farm like a good neighbor state.

Because i i just bought some stuff on amazon i and checked out net flicks and it seems to work fine sameday a regional thing. It's saying the northeast was greatly affected but some of the big names that were affected. And they're slowly coming back online. I guess youtube instagram. Hbo max pay pal amazon. This isn't big ones. that was a huge ones. Yeah i mean you want to really upset somebody shutdown amazon for the day. Oh my god can you imagine no not as bad as if disney plus was affected. Tonight people getting ready for that loki thing that's g- that's about to launch. Can you imagine there'd be riding in the streets. You're probably right. It's funny you know. What i we put that up on our facebook page and somebody actually wrote. That had no idea who we were talking about has disney plus in his rarely watches it. And i'm like wow. She didn't see the avengers at all. I guess i guess. I was like okay. Surprised one of the most heavily promoted streaming things of all time. Disney needs the help believe it or not with their their streaming service. But they think this is going to be the biggest streaming content of all time. Well the cast is really good. I i mean east tom. The reason loki is so popular is because of tom. Hit allston yeah. He does a phenomenal job of playing this character. But now you get owen. Wilson is the guy that plays his boss. I guess he's kind of like who's the samuel l. Jackson is what's his name. I can't think of his name to the rest of the avengers but same kind of situation. Nick fury captain. Nick fury captain nick fury. So he's kind of like the nick fury to tom. Heinsohn so it does. It must drop. What twelve o one. And it's right and it's it's logie. Character was in some of the biggest movies of all time. Now because of the avengers thing eight. I think he was in all of them. Brain tease thors brother right. So wherever four was there. Except what i think he was even wants to wasn't he wasn't the first one that's right. That's right so he Disney disney is really banking on us. I guess it's going to be a huge deal for them and thinking tens of millions of downloads. Really yeah well. I hope they're. They're they're. they're looking to make money for their parks. Being closed for so long right they gotta make up revenue somewhere. That's what they're doing. So i mean it's really this tomorrow and probably mandalorian on christmas. We're going to be the two big things and it comes out..
