"Yeah. Punches somebody as Wolverine. Well, admittedly, you can pull in his claws, but that would be even weirder if the Internet is still there. Yeah. What do you think about? So you're actually more excited about that than any others. There's been a rumor of, okay, so there's a rumor of so there's Wolverine for sure and Spider-Man two, which one of those two do you want to see? Wolverine, because it depends if Spider-Man who's got venom in it, which I think it will based on. It does. The first one. Yeah, it does. I mean, they're both insomnia. I can't they? Yep. So maybe ultimately we'll see a crossover because Spidey and Wolverine in the comics do work together quite a bit and they are there's games where they've done that as well. So that would be cool. We're so why do you care about venom? Interesting venom is one of the coolest characters. So I love that I like the Tom Hardy films of venom as well. I really like both of them. Another one popular but I love them. Yeah, they're just fun. What do you like about, so wait a minute, did you do midnight suns? I'm sorry, I can't remember. No, no, no, no. So what what's venom? So what's your experience with venom then the movies and the movies? Just the 90s Spider-Man cartoon really, mainly. She's my favorite character in that. Oh, and then also the original Spider-Man movie, right? Three. Yeah. By the way, that show is sort of maligned for right for some reason. I actually didn't mind that movie. Like, it's my favorite out of the three on reflection. When I think about it, it's like. So what is it about venom that you like? What was it? It's just so he's just so cool and it depends on the version as well because you get the venom who's with, I can use this ruthless and kills and doesn't care, but then you get the one from the Tom Hardy movies use more, I don't know which one's more realistic to venom. I don't really know much about him outside of the movies in a few years. He's a good guy. The movies? In the movies, he's anti hero. Yeah, because Tom hardy's character makes him stay at bay and keeps all good. But otherwise

"Okay, so how much time did Tom Hardy spend in that car on his way to spoiler alert? 102 for Adam 84 for Josh, the correct answer. One of you was within one minute. Uh oh. Unfortunately, for you, Adam, it is Josh, the answer is 85. What? Holy cow. That's almost as fast as a T. Rex. This is absolutely redemption for Josh. I have crushed. I'm crust falling. We're off to a terrible start with this draft. Should we rethink this show Adam? Do we want to just scrap over the whole show? Well, thanks for nothing, Thomas. I do what I can at him. Nothing if not consistent. All right, we will see you on trivia spotting soon. Thank you. Thanks, Thomas. No kidding 84 was the first number that popped in my mind. Was it real that I was wavering further and further away from it? If you'd given us 5 more seconds, I would have gone quite far from 84. I just assume every movie made over the last ten years is at least a 102 minutes. That's safe. That's safe. Well, then you have the first pick in our a 24 draft. Josh, what movie? Are you selecting the suspense? Is killing me? Adam, I'm first going to give a little bit of criteria a little bit of strategy here. Okay. I'm not going to tell you. I did give this some thought. I jest. It's not like I just rolled out of bed ten minutes ago. And I came up with three approaches I could take. I won't tell you which one I'm going to take. I don't even know which one I'm going to take to be honest with you. We'll see how this develops. But I did think, first off, right, you could go just personal favorites. I want to grab if I've got these films ranked, I want to grab as many of my top ten as I can. That's one option. I could prioritize just trying to win this atom versus Josh contest, which would mean pandering a little bit, trying to predict what the crowd wants, more than maybe what I like, going that route, one option. The other one I thought of that is kind of appealing to me, but would have required more preparation. Isn't it? Making me miserable is that option three? Trying to take all my favorites? Well, that's embedded in all of them, actually. But the third one was, which would probably be the most fun, but would require maybe a spreadsheet is programming an a 24 film festival. So say a 24 said, we're going to give you ten titles. You can't have them all. Ten titles for this film fest, which ones do you want? Then you're crafting a weekend experience for the attendees. That one sounds the most fun, maybe I'll lean that way as we get going, but at the top here, Adam, some men just want to watch the world burn. I'm going with lady bird. So you went with option two and a half, which was you're just going to try to destroy me with your picks. I mean, it feels fun right now. We'll see how long that lasts. I know this isn't your favorite a 24 film. Who said that? Who said that's my strategy? It should be part of your strategy. I love it. I'm a big fan of lady bird. Huge fan of lady bird. Oh, my Thomas Todd destroying the movie draft with that question. Okay. You don't know where to go from there. I don't. You're taking lady bird one. You're taking I'm taking lady bird one. It's a really good movie. One of our best young filmmakers. Yeah. Why would I not? Why would I not want lady bird on my team? Why are you surprised by this? I agree. Okay. I see how it's going to be. You're going to be ruthless. That's what I'm in for. And you did perfectly lay out. Exactly the three different approaches I considered. Just go straight my top ten favorite, knowing that you'd probably take a few of those and it wouldn't be the exact top ten, but go with my favorites in order or try to win the popularity contest. Try to go with what I think more film spotting listeners and more people on Twitter might prefer. Or I could think about it in terms of a sort of diversity of films and film type and act as a programmer and I've got ten films over the course of two days or three days. What would make for that best lineup? And I'm going to tell you, Josh, I want to pull off all three. In my perfect world, you're the wild card, and you have already hurt me. You've cut me deep, but I want to pull off all three. I'm going to have ten films that are ambitious. I love and feel strong about. I'm going to have ten films that I think are going to be the list that takes down your list popularity wise, and I think they'd make a fantastic film fest. You want it all. We'll see if I can. Live up to that. And I can pull off something so audacious. Again, I am off to a rough start. But what's interesting here Josh? When we talk about those different approaches and strategy is that lady bird's my clear number one favorite. But if I had the number one choice, I was going to go with X Machina. And X Machina is going to be my choice. And

"They should make these into movies. They should maybe have little two or three part she hulk movies that are only streaming released. Yeah. They still don't have to have a super crazy big budget, but you're just driving television shows. I know, I'm just saying that they need to maybe give them a boost in budget, but they're giving you almost too much in the television. It's a problem. This is the same thing. Volume issue. I remember watching that then thinking they're going to because it's going to be your core fans are going to go see this, but you're not winning new people. You got to win new people. You got to be able to have a tailor sit there and get into it. But I guess it's like and we'll say they did explain it a little bit like, you know, at the very beginning, I thought it was neo from the matrix. And I was like, what the fuck is like, but they did kind of explain, you know, but he wakes up from a dream. And I'm like, oh, maybe this is just the start of it. He's just like, so I didn't even know that was like a real thing until they started talking about it. But then they even mentioned it later. So they actually did do a pretty good job in tying it in a little bit. And but also, if you're just going to see a Star Trek, maybe you have to, for me, I knew I was watching science fiction. And I was like, you know that there's probably a back story to a lot of this stuff. So you have to actually embrace that. That's why I was like, when I first watched it, I was a little angry. I was like, get the fuck out of here at this bullshit. It was like, but I was like, you know what? I get this film. I totally get it. And it also concerns me. It kind of had a good and bad way that this was their best film. Because I actually wasn't offended by it. Visually and I watched the whole goddamn thing. But I was like, man, this is the best film. And I was like, oh, wait till you see this. Imagine. Okay, so the villain in the next one after this is salieri from the Mozart movie. Oh. And but that one's a shitty film. Insurrection. The next one after that. The villains are Tom Hardy and Ron Perlman. Oh, well actually I kind of watched them. That's nemesis. That's Tom Hardy is a young clone of Picard. Super skinny dude. And then Ron Perlman is like a weird vampire romulan revealing whatever for remus, whatever.

"I mean, he was looking at Rihanna at one point. He, you know, when they were trying to cast this because they cast it over about a year and a half, which is a really long process. They looked at everybody. They looked at people like Jennifer Lawrence and Margot Robbie for the wives, so they were seeing all these, you know, soon to be superstars and just trying to figure out, okay, who's right for this? So hardy gets it. Does he get it because of the Armie Hammer try out because George also, this is a very different casting. I mean, almost everything about this experience seems to be different because everybody's telling you in the book, like, yeah, I've never done anything like this. There appears to be kind of this one face off between hammer and hardy, where that's pretty much it. That's the best way to describe it. Yeah, they were among the finalists for the role. And the story that I was told is that in their final sort of audition against each other, Tom spit in Armie Hammer space. And after that audition was over army said to George, listen, this guy wants it more than I do. It should be him. And army at that point had a history with George Miller. He was going to play Batman for him in the Justice League movie that never ended up happening. So I think he was really George Miller was really intrigued by kind of like Tom Hardy's danger. You know, Mel Gibson has that. Mel Gibson is a much crazier person than his movie roles would suggest. If you just get him in a room, he's like a twitchy kind of hard to pin down guy. And Tom Hardy is that too. I've interviewed Tom a bunch, and he is the sort of person where you can just try to have a normal conversation with him about whatever movie he's in and he'll just start asking you random questions like, hey mate, how much Mandarin do you speak? And you'll be like, none, mister Tom Hardy. Why? He's like, because the Chinese men, Chinese have taken over the whole world. And you're just trying to steer this conversation back on track. He is a total live.

"Would need how they'd be stitched together So first someone like Charlize he'd just say turn your head and put your hand on the steering wheel Shouldn't necessarily know what that moment is even connected to So that could be frustrating for a lot of actors who didn't quite know their place in the story who was telling And you also say that she's the sort of person that if they said be out of the trailer and on the set at noon she's there at noon Tom Hardy is the opposite and sometimes he would stroll out of the trailer two hours later It got to the point where his obnoxiousness really began to compromise if not the movie at least his relationship with the cast and crew and it got to the point where she wanted security around him right They're both very talented actors with very different approaches That caused a lot of conflict This was not an easy movie to make So I think they took out some of that anxiety on each other And like you said it all came to a head one day where Tom showed up Let us do it I was like but three hours late after Charlize was sitting in that car waiting and waiting and waiting They left out There was a war of words it got very contentious but you know now with the benefit of perspective I think they both look back on that scenario and they both say we were scared We didn't know what we were doing and we hope we would treat that with a little more maturity now They were in Namibia Namibia right That's right yeah not some Hollywood soundstage with green screen They went out there and they did it for real They really wrote those cars in the desert Okay and they're out there for a better part of a year Imagine her sitting in the desert for three hours waiting for this guy to show up but let's leave that part of the story for a moment In these fantastic chase scenes you see explosions and rockets being fired spears being thrown You see guys on what look like giant pole vaulting poles springing from one vehicle to another How much of that actually happened Almost all of it And I think that's why it feels so visceral You know when we watch a Fast & Furious movie or we see Spider-Man swing through the air I think our brains know we're looking at pixels I mean we're still entertained but we're not thinking that that really happened The physics don't feel right All the things that would happen for real aren't captured It's too controlled to fuzzy to plastic And that's what they wanted to go do in the desert They wanted to shoot absolutely every element for real If those cars crashed if those explosions happen it does bears got thrown all of that really happened And feel it when you watch You do you do And this is fantastic what you're saying because when you watch this some people are going from vehicle to vehicle and maybe they've sped up the film but it looks like these things are moving pretty fast through the desert as people are jumping back and forth and springing back and forth from these things It's amazing that the studio would allow it or that the people would agree to do it Well and in both cases they barely did You know The studio often changed their mind about allowing it And the people who were involved with it were like wait you want me to do what What's happening But sometimes you need that director who's willing to push the envelope That's how you get great art when someone is willing to be a little more daring than other movies have traditionally led them to be There's just so many bizarre things about this And that's sort of fearlessness I think even is evident at the outset when the producer they said we don't want you shooting in Africa and he didn't tell them that he had just put a 120 custom made vehicles for the production on a container ship that he rented for $2 million to ship over there and those vehicles I don't know if any of them still exist but I want one of them Those things are amazing Yeah yeah the producer told the studio but after the ship had left the shore You know that is one of those ballsy old Hollywood producer moves where you just gotta roll with it If you are getting into bed with these people and you're gonna make that movie there's no point dragging your feet You gotta commit to it you know And I think Hollywood executives were not ready for that I think honestly a lot of Hollywood movie stars were not ready for it This was not going to be a walk in the park never was and that's just how he operates Ten Academy Award nominations including best picture and director and one for 6 mostly on the technical side editing costume sound effects stuff like that but if you are thinking okay I want to go back and just watch something fun that'll take my mind off a pandemic or whatever You could do worse than Mad Max: Fury Road And by the way you should read this book It's really conversational It's an oral history if you will of the making of the movie and it's just really really fun Kyle Nice job on the book Thank you so much Sean I'm glad you liked it Kyle Buchanan is the author of blood sweat and chrome.

"Agree to that into that end. No-one should punish sony for what their next move is of the garfield movie not are they behind the garfield movie they are. That's i don't wanna know that released spider. It'll be okay. So here's the roadmap. That i saw them came out john surprisingly okay. Are we talking about Venom to enter sandman or first venom. Well this is just a time line. I saw first venom. Came out a been one. Van one yeah. I'm tom hardy weird voice. He always does it. It's fine also kinda came by pretty cool Tom hardy did not venom. Oh i mean we knew that about venom out. We knew that benham. Anyway that came out did find. Covert hit Things got thrown into jeopardy. A more bs movie was announced and then announced delayed and then announced delayed indefinitely. And in my mind that's code for cancelled Then venom to comes out and has a ninety minute run time and it seemed like they were just sort of dumping it and moving on with their lines in the venom verse was effectively cancelled. That's what i thought john That's what i thought until today today inexplicably movie trailer dropped o. My god jared. Leto is more bs. The vampire nemesis of spiderman. This movie is coming out and again. All signs point to the venom verse. Being canceled is coming out january. Twenty eighth twenty two thousand twenty two. Ooh soon very soon too soon. And in january the month were movies. Go to die now. What if we're setting up a universe where the venom verse continues but It it just. It continues despite eternally trying to be killed like being put out in the movie graveyard of january being shit out on screens at a ninety minute run time. What if you can't kill the venom verse. I agree one hundred percent john. And here's why marvel studios and independent studios at the time. Pitch may to release the first iron man may may is not a big movie month for those of you. Who don't know summer. Blockbusters are always sort of the cash cow for movies. A spring movie may was nothing before marvel studios dropped ironman right at the end right after graduation for high schoolers one after school. Let out spring break three point. Oh if you will and at revolutionized the movie market from then on every may marvel dropped another movie than disney acquired. Marvel and they kept the same strategy. I think sony is trying to revolutionize movies again by including the shorter run time and also. They're trying to capitalize that january.

It's fucking frightening and the stakes are huge right. So in this case none of that's there so now you have both characters. Both envenom in eddie are completely weakened. And there's no. I just don't understand this character. I don't understand is a reporter. But he's he's reported doesn't act like you've never actually had a reporter. That's not like a border though. He's yet. I don't know i'm with you on this. I'm completely agreement like for some venom. This is in venom. Spiderman again is very essential. I draft so a couple times now. The way that tom hardy is chosen to play or either the scripture tom hart. It sounds like tom hardy. Tom hart chosen to play. Eddie it just it just not does. It's it's incongruent with what you think. Reporter a responsible reporter would be like this is a reporter that would date michelle williams right right this guy. That's writing like front page stuff and like but he's from his a new york like kind of just go but he's like you like if you look at that guy you're like that guy. I could smell that guy from a mile away like and he's nothing like he's nothing redeeming about him. He doesn't want to use his powers a save anyone. He doesn't care to to like us. The responsibilities that he has them from eating people mostly well. Yeah but but he's also any. This guy is not like i don't want him to get the girl i don't i don't like one. I wouldn't wanna be that guy's friend. He seems like a hall all like horrible. Like fuck up. The only redeeming thing is like a gag. Guess he's like stop venom from eating people's heads just doesn't that doesn't seem like the type of guy that would be have that kind of job and like someone you wanna root for. She stopped them from eating. Mrs chen that would have been like if i were to write. Eddie brock in this universe..

The hero always loses their powers at some point getting marvel none of the marvel but before the older one doesn't thord not be worthy one. Oh does he know the first one see you. This is what i've thousands it is the sequel formula pre-empts. You what you do hours in his search shit. So i also this movie should these should be rated. Aren't they can have a lot more fun. They okay. Let's talk about any of these circuses directing because i'll give him credit. I am a little bit of credit for two things minor things because i have a huge nitpick with him directing us the two things i'll give them credit for is that he did lean into the wacky more. The the scenes where. Tom hardy is talking to venom. That you know. He's good with directing mo cap and cgi. Give me a whole movie of venom. Eddie just walking walking around going to the dmv. Go picking up laundry just doing mundane shit. I watch that shit all day sun boom she. That's those are the best parts for me. And the cgi mildly better. Just a tiny bit. I wouldn't. I don't know if i give credit to andy circus for anything i don't know like i don't see anything he did to the movie. That makes it better or worse. I mean i think it's just a terrible script. Yeah in it's been edited to like minimize the damage of the fact that this there's nothing to this movie. Script in the dialogue is awful. And i was surprised at how actually faithfully to the tone of the first one this was. I was like what did eighty circuits. Do you think this is just a paycheck movies in and out. Because i don't see his fingerprints anywhere except for those two little things you can give it credit for. Is it just like the first one is just so bizarre like the plot is so bad like the first one. They have this symbiotic killing everyone yet. That simba dies in another city. It takes six months to come to america and is that actually the main villain is like what what you had similar. That was killing everybody in the blame. Plot were this. One is like a little bit more streamlined. But it's just It is a dumb i mean. There's the one scene where i was like. Oh my god. What's the dumbest parts for me. The dumbest part is woody. Harrelson is carnage is is stolen this red car right pulls up to a gas station knocks the guy out and then gets on the laptop and hooked in hacks the military but he's or the us government's base. And i'm like there's so many weird things happening here first off..

"Not the greatest thing in the world but again people don't go to see many of these superhero movies to go see cutting edge entertainment. That's going to go ahead and win an oscar. My this is something that they're going to go ahead. Turn off your and he had some popcorn type fun. This is something that. I'm really happy about in regards to woody harrelson because it's so great to see someone who you gotta remember out there people. This is a guy who started an acting in cheers in the early eighties and still forty years later. Almost is still not only just as relevant but even more so appearing all these big box office films. So i wanna hear your thoughts melinda on this venom. Let there be carnage. How do you think that's going to go over with an audience. Do you think it's going to do well. I know the circumstances are perfect and again it was moved all over the place but still can't find a home with movie goers i mean even bad movies find homes with movie-goers sometimes when a movie is getting the worst reviews. You almost have to go to see if it's as bad as everyone is saying. It is unfortunately the feeling that i'm getting from all of the reviews that i've read also to be fair. I would go and sit in a theater for two hours. And watch tom hardy. Pick his nose for two hours. So i'll probably gonna go see it despite any unreasonable..

I'm looking forward to what. Andy circus may bring to this. And looking forward to what woody harrelson. He's directing the fucking movie right forgotten. And i'm looking forward to woody harrelson just being over the top ridiculous like i kinda wanted it. That might be good. I wanted to be like a ridiculous like eighties movie. That's you know it's cheesy. It's bad it's goofy. But you're there for the rummy bare bones were just looking for entertainment. Were not let's for faithfulness to the source material. Were not looking for faithfulness to tone or or even using storylines or anything interesting from the actual proper forever to entertainment. It'll probably be at least somewhat that. However this is what i am looking for to. 'cause there has been They've talked about some of the producers director. Whatever that there will be an emcee a crossover with the mc you that there. There is some rumors some there were like. We will eventually cross over at spiderman. We know there's going to be multi-diverse wacky nece in spiderman. No way home. Tom holland recently posted an instagram photo of himself. Not tom tom hardy. Sorry tom hardy posted a photo. He was wearing a spiderman no way home cast and crew hat and they said that in this movie is what are the odds that there's some spiderman shit going on in this movie that we will see spiderman that they are tying. This is going to be the beginning of tying it to the poll. Tom holland out of the you into the sony verse. Do you think we'll see any of that in this movie. That's what i'm watching for. You might see it but it won't make any sense or people who like probably not. Yeah i think. I mean i agree. I mean they already hinted at that moebius trailer that vulture chemo's in there and as opposed this upcoming spiderman movie might be the last one where we see him in the. Mc you other than maybe like one others mainly doctor strange very says up again in the doctor strange sequel venom. This version of venom doesn't do a lot for me. I do kind of like the angle though. If you're going to like go with it. And andy circuses obviously different direction than the first one make it like the frickin eighties and make it. Less weirdly is gonna is it rated r. Now it's pg thirteen it is. He should do rated r. venom. But they probably don't wanna cut the box office with our. But i mean they're they're hinting of possibility of spiderman crossover And that's what i guess. I wanna see. I couldn't hurt you know it's just tough to do. I mean even when you do a spiderman. Crossover like again expire mentioned. Be crossing over. It should have been should have been there to me. That's it's just such a core part of that character also rumor and talks of how they want to jump start their sinister six movie sony that they still wanna make the wanting us like the villains. We're going to see in spiderman no way home and then use well. The in some of them started. They all started over there. That could be crazy. You know sony sony. Doing anything doesn't make me live. They still don't have made the best fighter bad movies i liked into the spider verse allies..

I don't think they've ever sort of got into the core of a watch sort of made his characters in character into comics interesting or compelling or cool to me at any rate. But then again, I mean, even the comics have sort of struggled with that over the years quite a lot, I think. So you didn't like a lot of what's his name as venom? The actor. Tom Hardy. Hardy came close, and he was, but that was, I mean, my problem with that was that's the part hardy, then it was about the movie itself, which didn't really, I think execute on the whole venom thing very well. In terms of what makes some interesting. So I'm pessimistic just because I've seen so many different portrayals of venom go wrong for me. That this will be different. But I am excited for Spider-Man two because I love the first Spider-Man game. Doom? You like or have played the Spider-Man games? I've played, yeah, I played the last one. I haven't played miles Morales. I don't have a PS5. I thought it was fantastic. Yeah, I'm excited to see. It's a safe bet, you know, in South America. "Sal. I'm thinking about the third movie as well. Because i think you need to write that at the same time. Hardy said a third won't be green lit until the second is successful but the studio was really really pleased with number two. Who does number two work for so a look. Yeah actor in a movie wants to do another movie You know why is this news because it tells you a couple of things it tells you. One were thinking ahead We're thinking trilogy at least two. I think If he's to believe be believed that we are that the studio lice what they see and let the carnage I hope they saw more than what i saw in that trailer. Because ma- but really. Yeah i well. Yeah we talked about it and it kinda just always surprised. We talk a lot about a lot of and that It wasn't i. I didn't i didn't i let me rephrase did not like the first one i just didn't care for it. I didn't think it was great. I certainly didn't think it was the smash everybody else did. So i'm in the minority there. That's fine broad shoulders. What do you think about tom hardy wanting to do three. Then as i've been kind of a da right and as you said doctor wants work. Nothing nothing new there in terms of moving forward after No way home I think it'll be. It'll be interesting to incorporate tom holland and see spiderman actually go up against venom. That's sort of part of what put me off of the. I mean we still haven't seen it and also it looked like tom. Hardy was accepting a paycheck. Like i thought it was the okay. I'll take this one and then get my prestige movie out of the way next. But if he's passionate about it and he's working forward to a third movie and with him saying he wants to see spiderman in venom fight. Then i i agree i would i that. Here's the thing i know. Everybody wants to see that but spider man doesn't fit in venom. Not this incarnation of venom..

And that's your headline. Yeah your headline. He headline should be tom. Hardy mary's venom or tom. Hardy is already married to venom. wears your journalistic integrity. Did you not find when they got married. Did they elope. Yeah like was it a private ceremony behind closed doors. I don't get it. I understand. But i did just learn for the first time. Andy circuses. The director of venom. Let there be. Carnage andy circuses. Very talented As directed anything before this is his fourth feature In addition to ghalem origins In addition to lead the jungle breathe. Those are the two movies. The article great That's that's interesting. I don't know that i that. I heard a lot about now. Mogul being particularly good but a good thing for him directing this is. There's a lot of cap involved. I would have to imagine. An indie circus of course should have won oscars for his smoke at wait hold on. Where would mo cap fit into venom. the carnage character. Okay yeah i i could see that. It's it's just gonna be weird for them to inject a lot of unnecessary. Cgi indovina movies after the first one. Because you know venom real venom. Real of course and it was a big get together in that movie. Yeah look it would be like getting Luke skywalker to be an skywalker film. Okay well now. you're just making jokes. They're cousins However i really got into spider man comics in the nineties. When i was introduced the idea of a venom the black suit and carnage and. I absorbed everything i could about those characters because i was a small child and i thought the comic books weren't edgy enough. Yeah they had to be edgy. And you know venom wasn't from the whatever Over peter parker. It's eddie brock's time in the sun. It's eddie brock's tire Today's weather forecast at brock is and the fun. "I never had that much dislike towards the box, but like you said, compared to the Brooklyn compared to Philly. Now, that's an easy one. Yeah. Well, let's do the Celtics have done. Then enough of me, focusing around the league. Let's talk about what the Celtics are doing and specifically around the coaching staff. So long, we've missed a few things. We we did talk after the Kemba Walker trade. And so we've kind of done our analysis there but then there's then all the changes, they hired, udoka wage, And it looks like Damon Stoudamire, right? That's finalized, that's not just rumor. They completed that today and then but I don't know. This other guy that everybody keeps talking about is it will hardly see if I got it, right? Yeah. And I threw down a bunch of funny games beforehand, Hardy from the it's vein. It's Tom Hardy Tom Hardy like yeah, that's no will already definitely will hardy. I guess I could have gone with spot not spot. I could have gone down that road but I didn't I did will harm. Yeah, I mean I think it's interesting that that you don't you may you know cuz really trying to craft his own his own way with this coaching staff because Brad really didn't go that route. He really brought he kept most of Doc's coaches around you know. Larranaga yeah. Jamie you know Young You'd had, you know, Brandon Bailey was in the in the the staff. Then Scott Morrison was was I think kicking around. I mean, most of those guys were around and he'd really only added Micah Shrewsberry and wage, um, Ron Adams, well, we've already and well, let's add one other thing too. That, you know, Jay larranaga was in consideration for head coaching positions home. He doesn't seem like he's quite got the fight. He seems like a really nice guy to me and, and sometimes, you can't be that nice guy. I don't want to. I wonder if that came into play, but he's been reported long heavily involved in the development of many young players on this team. So I guess that's the one that surprises me. I started to interrupt you, but that's what I was kind of trying to get from you. Is which one of those non retained? Like Micah is an interesting one. I'm trying to remember is it to Scott? He coached the red cloths course. Yeah. Right. So wage So that one like sort of surprises me but not really, it's Jay larranaga that surprises. Me the most. Yeah. Well and he worked, he worked with Tatum and and was smart to which presumably would be two guys. That will will be here. You know, discover the Earth certainly certainly Tatum smart. Maybe that's not as clear but you know it's you're right it seems unlikely or I don't know. It seems odd that he wouldn't but you know potentially you know, they were looking at them and say you know we need to have a different look. I I don't know why you would necessarily feel that way you know I don't I don't know that he was a negative or would have faith in the way but you know maybe that's part of what you do cuz trying to do here just trying to add a different look for for guys like Tatum and brown you know, because job As you said the data structure, you press conference..

Dunkirk Awards
"Welcome to film spotting, we will get to our Nolan Review Awards. Later in the show, we might have an for those awards picked out by. Then we might not. We will share our awards for favourite supporting performance and lead performance from this retrospective of the work of Christopher Nolan will also share our picks for best Nolan moment in the overall best moment or seen after we have revisited all ten of Nolan's films and that will culminate with our Christopher Nolan rankings. The definitive Christopher ranking for each of us one to ten will there be some shifting Adam Gimme a tease. Shifts definitely from the last time, I posted a Nolan ranking on letterbox. There's been some movement Yep me too one I think you'll like I don't know if you'll like it enough, but you will like it I though the World War Two movie from Christopher Nolan that we didn't know we needed dunkirk. The enemy tanks stop. Why? Why waste precious tanks when they can pick from the. Barrel. Their full hundred thousand men only speech. Your position. Josh, coming into this rewatch was that done kirk is Christopher, Nolan's best film and there's at least one longtime listener and regular commentator who agrees with you that we are culminating this overview triumphantly with the filmmakers greatest achievement Adam Grossman in Vancouver says like many of us. I've completed my Christopher Nolan Review. Biggest takeaway hoover is a really hard were dispel. Well, second takeaway. I've decided dunkirk is Nolan's career highpoint while my heart loves interstellar the most good on you Adam and I. Hugely Admire. and. The Dark Knight for what they meant to Action Cinema and Superhero movies respectively dunkirk is his masterpiece got laid down for you tenant. I just don't know how anyone could argue that the legend of dunkirk could be told any better the setup and the first eight minutes alone from the falling paper from the sky to the distress. Cry of where's the bloody air force is a wonder of a short film. In itself, the lack of dialogue works perfectly for what this movie wants to achieve with. Hans. Zimmer's relentless scored doing all the audio work that's necessary among all the chaos. There are frequent moments of grace. Kenneth. Branagh face as Commander Bolton as the cavalry arrives in the form of the civilian vessels the empathy as Peter Tells Killian Murphy's PTSD soldier. The young George will be okay and no moment more than the shot. Be Okay and no more than a shot of Tom Hardy's planes silently gliding over the beaches of dunkirk knowing his job has been done. dunkirk is also uniquely Christopher Nolan Movie One where his signature use of time has never melded together better and more cohesively than it does in the final twenty minutes of this film while Dunkirk will understandably never be a wholly enjoyable or easy rewatch. It's one that gets richer and richer with repeat viewing. Now, Adam Mention Nolan signature use of time, and that is one aspect of dunkirk among others that certainly connects to his entire body of work. But there are other aspects that Mark Dunkirk is unique. It is only film that is based on historical events, which means it is inherently rooted in the past and yet I'd argue it is only film that truly feels present tense meeting there are no. Dead parents or wives or forsaken children or other tragic events haunting the air's barrier played by Tom. Hardy the Moles Army private Tommy fiene whitehead or for the most part the sees Mr Dawson played by Mark Rylance like all Nolan protagonist there's plenty of personal sacrifices on display but no guilt no sense of futility about toning past actions just the seemingly futile need to survive the current event that they. Are Tragically experiencing here's something else that argues unique about dunkirk as we every other commentator on Dolan's work is discussed in some form or fashion for all those dead parents and wives and foresaken children. There's nothing so emotional or borderline sentimental in any of his previous films as the climax of inception and yes, mileage may vary there which led to interstellar and not only mcconaghy's crushing breakdown watching twenty three. Years Worth of miss video messages from his family but the verbalize message love is the one thing we're capable of proceeding that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that even if we can't understand it, it's hard to imagine any character in previous Christopher Nolan movies saying something like that which led to Dunkirk am I crazy josh this is his most blatantly sentimental and even heart film. And if so is that what establishes Dunkirk as his best its balance of coldness the sober portrayal of the hell of war of life in the misguided choices, some men will make when facing death with warmth. In the compassionate inspiring choices some men will make to maintain a way of life. So a lot of subtleties in that question and you're onto something so you're not crazy I think I would distinguish. The word blatantly, I. Don't think this is blatantly emotional or moving, but I do think you're onto something in the fact that it is maybe his most heartwarming in where it ends up and let me kind of try to parse those. You're right as long as the Nolan Canon has convulsing McConnell. Interstellar is going to be his most blatantly emotional I mean you can't have a scene like that without registering that on it surface. That's his most emotional movie. But I will also say that I find Dunkirk to be his most emotionally affecting movie maybe even more. So than inception, which we about how I did find that very moving especially in the character of Mal. So yet dunkirk is really a unique thing even as it's working within the strands and trends that we have been tracing in Nolan's other films, I. Think the heartwarming aspect is probably a part of that. You've nailed it there in that it brings us to a place that. Is One of Constellation and I think it's earned because I think up until that point we have just been suffering alongside all of these other characters in so many ways and we've also been recognizing as the movie does that this is You know a an account of a military failure, a huge defeat and so for the movie to kind of offer, some sort of solace at the end of that I think is. In proportion and well

Now Playing - The Movie Review Podcast
Joker, Commentary
"Going to be a podcast her everyone laughed at me well no one's laughing now and Stewart and this is the host who always has negative thoughts Jacob joker a movie that I could not believe have the height around it that it did I can't recall the last time a superhero film was Ben so polarizing I mean people worried about shootings in theaters people saying Joaquin deserves an Oscar yeah it was all over the place coming out of Toronto Oh this is going to be the film of the year it's going to get all the Oscars and then Todd Phillips director opens his mouth and got a lot of backlash for what he thought we're comedy was these days yet all the place with this film that said I got to say this one took me by surprise I assumed that DC was in free fall. I mean we have all commented on how their output has been inconsistent can we all agree at best putting it nicely right that they have not had the scene unless nece that the Marvel Universe has been able to bestow on all of their works when I heard they were doing a one off joker movie I was like that sounds like a bad idea story are you getting those marvel paycheck saying they're in free fall I mean wonder woman made one of a billion dollars off man made a billion dollars what kind of free was that will somebody say well I don't care what the hardcore people think the truth of the matter is a lot of their movies have stone DOC and they've not consistent the fact that we have a one of joker movie this joker that we're told will never appear with Batman what the hell are they doing marvel would never do that is what I guess I would say sure but I don't mind that like what is the best spider man film Spiderman entered the spider verse like that is not connection to the m. c. you or what Sony is doing with Tom Allen's spider manoeuvres etta any of that so I don't mind a one off if you can just pull off a good movie I don't care if it's in any kind of continuity villain standalone movies making a Superhero movie without a superhero has not been something I've thought has worked before I mean Holly Aries cat-woman Tom Hardy thinom they could never figure out how to do sinister of six I mean you could even probably throw the Star Wars prequels into that concept having the super villain story told without a counterpoint of heroism where's our entry point who are we supposed to be with and what are they going to accomplish the you mentioned marvel I think that DC here is taking a cue from Marvel's newest acquisition Fox Todd Phillips talked about how it took a lot of convincing at Warner Brothers to let him do an R. rated joker movie but that was the only thing he was pitching and he's literally hearing responses from Warner brothers like we sell joker pajamas at target what are you going to do to our character that might hurt Pyjama sales and look at the roads that deadpool paved and I think even more specifically logan going more dramatic and being R. rated you can't beat marveled by playing Marvin those game the way you beat marvelous by making your own Fox did that and nobody is even see new mutants because nobody knows what to do with it again the X. Men horror movie yeah they've experimented sometimes those experiments have been successful I'm just saying approaching this project hearing the we're going to do a one off film about the region of joker seemed like a waste of time I was not excited about this movie at all until I saw the trailer Yeah Al admit I mean after seeing what happened to jared Leto in jokers role in suicide squad. We'll see at that movie he doesn't think he was in that movie enough he's got a scene it was not overly excited to see what they would do with joker now what I will say is somewhere at this very moment jared Leto has pissed Yeah Joaquin Phoenix get attached this because that's what I would have gotten excited you know he's one of those actors like Tom Hardy who's like a Nicholas cage who is just going to make some decisions and go with them they could be czar. They could be captivating like that trailer yeah they really tapped into Martin Scorsese in that taxi driver field but I was even more excited about Joaquin Phoenix playing this role and should be pointed out he is the man that would be doctor strange he has quartered comic book movies before and walked away saying this is not really for me why do this one he was also offered the role of Bruce Banner the reason he didn't do them he didn't WanNa sign multi picture contracts he didn't want to do what Chris Evans and Robert Downey junior did where the next seven years of your life you're working basically as a day player for marvel here it's a one picture deal and the ways they got him on board for this one it was Todd Phillips again Joaquin was connected from the very beginning and the Pitch Phillips gave him is we're going to make a real movie but we're going to get warner brothers to fifty million dollars for it by calling it fucking joker yeah how did Todd Phillips and doing this because I've seen a lot of his films old cool that hangover trilogy these are not things that I associate with a Gritty New York Scorsese style film you saying that and coach when I look at this filmography I hadn't seen most of what he meant. Yeah they're bad comedies well he makes kind of comedy I don't patronize the I'm not ever interested in watching skin hutch that's just not something I'm going to see I did see war dogs which I actually thought it was a little underrated I thought it was pretty good it's okay yeah kind of fell apart at the end yeah thought it was decent as well and it was four dogs that actually got this happening as he was at an early screening of war dogs with Warner brothers and realize is is exact phrase was war dogs wasn't going to set the world on fire as so he started talking to Warner about what could we make that's going to really get attention and do a little bit more be a little more provocative look way down on his resume his first film and you might actually see why he really got the Gig I was doc I didn't realize I had always heard about this documentary about the punk icon singer G- yeah I did not know top Phillips did that I have seen it ooh those are some live performances you wanna be careful with he strips down throws a species tough stuff to watch yeah I watched the movie I was like Oh I've always wanted to see it this gives me an lent reason it may be the closest of all his films to joker it begins with an actual endorsement from John Wayne Gay see another killer clown so yeah brutal I don't know that I'm telling people I recommend that experience be prepared I don't say this lightly it is very punishing it is very hard set is provocative and ways a lot of people probably want appreciate but you can't see a director who's very much trying to confront a freak entertainer and I do think at a core G G Allen and joker are two sides of the same coin so I would be interested to see a guy that came from punk rock bring a punk rock aesthetic to of joker movie if we must Gotcha Joker Origin Story. I WanNa say though I'm hesitant because I mean I always liked the way Keith Ledger played it how did I get my scars there's a danger and telling US definitively how joker came to exist right. There's something about the mystery we want to leave I've always liked the mystery the funny thing and you can go back to books and Nachos where in our talks about the killing joke written by Alan Moore the joker says I always change my story but here's the version I'm going to tell of my own gin and they tell an origin story and then just as origin story we're just GonNa make that the real thing but yeah I've always preferred him to be like Batman rewritten so obsessed with origin Martha Thomas Wayne Getting Killed and the pearls and walking out Zora all of that that has been told so many times joker being the opposite of Batman I liked that you just this mysterious chaotic clown figure that comes out of nowhere yeah I've definitely was thinking the killing joke when watching this and how it took elements of that in that Comic Book Joker was a failed stand up comedian who was kind of down on his luck in a rundown older Gotham city but I came in I think we might be seeing virtually and adaptation of the killing joke minus all the Batman stuff no they definitely go in a different direction with this but it gave them a good starting point and joker said he likes his origin story to be multiple choice. DC is having both ways they're gonNa make their continuity multiple choice switch movies do you want and continuity go ahead that's weird for me that we're seeing something that I should not think of as a comic book movies essentially what they're telling me don't worry I'll have nothing to do with Zam Aquaman wonder woman and all of that I mean did they even have that DC logo they have that old school Warner Brothers logo show up no DC logo okay and yet I mean it's not just your average comic book movies this movie's doing bigger than a lot of films I mean it's opening bigger than the average thor film it's maybe not topped here it's not spiderman but I'm not really it's no atman though it's beaten that man right yeah this is going to have a ninety million joining in the US. The biggest October release of all time is it Halloween in the mood for something kind of scary after it we want another killer oh but it's shocking to me the box office for what essentially feels a little art film is so huge and that it's rated R. You can't get teenagers in which is where marvel makes its money is they are aiming specifically at thirteen to seventeen year old market with their PG thirteen films and yes adults can like it in younger kids can like it but they're keeping that content for a rated R. Film in an error where in my experience it's much harder for young people to get into a rated R. Film that it made this much money is shocking to me I expected it to do well I didn't expect it to break venoms record

Sony and Disney kiss and make up over 'Spider-Man'
"Was revealed this morning that Spiderman will stay in the marvel cinematic universe. What do we know Brad. That's right. Spiderman is back in the marvel cinematic universe at least for the foreseeable future in a surprise announcement today today from both Sony pictures and Walt Disney Studios the two announced that they have struck a new deal Kevin Feige to produce a third film in Spiderman Franchise that will be released on July sixteenth twenty twenty. One with Tom Holland back as Spiderman and on top of that the deal also includes an appearance France by spider man in a future marvel studios film though it has not been named specifically which movie that might be in the press release. Kevin Feige said quote I'm thrilled at spiders journey in the NCAA will continue and I and all of us models are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spiderman powerful I kind of hero whose story crosses all ages audiences inches around the globe he also happens to be the only hero with a superpower to cross cinematic universes so as Sony continues to develop their own spidey verse. You never know what surprises the future might hold will so that sounds like an interesting hint as to what the future might hold for Spiderman perhaps existing both in the Marlton a medic universe and Dan maybe a separate Spiderman Universe that Sony pictures controls and that makes sense considering Kevin Feige previously hinted that it was likely a crossover with Tom. Holland Spiderman and Tom Hardy's venom would eventually

"Spider-Man" Is Leaving The Marvel Cinematic Universe
"So here's the way this works Marvel creates a spider man Stanley creates spider man Marvel's got the rights to it for years Marvel which wasn't really producing movies end up selling the rights to Sony so then we get the Tobey Maguire version of spider man in the in the beginning of this century and so we see those movies they're wildly successful Sonny tries a reboot with this guy Andrew Garfield I thought the movies were fine but they were critically reviewed very poorly and audiences were not really going for it either they didn't make what they want in the box office so Sony finally gets over itself and says okay fine we'll work with Marvel on this incredible cinematic universe that they've created with Iron Man and all these other characters they put them all together in this giant marriage that work out the contracts the right way and ends up being a smashing success well it's over we get news yesterday spider man is now leaving the Marvel cinematic universe Tom Holland who's played the character really well in the latest movies well not apparently be although there is a some hope still hanging out there apparently be a part of any more of these Marvel cinematic universe's movies and instead Sony's just gonna hold onto I'm selfishly because they can't agree on you guessed it money for more on this we got Victoria Gleick is the executive producer filling in this morning for our heather hunter Victoria I know you watch all the stuff really closely checks to me about this yesterday to me America you were very disappointed in the US yes it's funny because my friend Logan shot out to him texted me and I ended up texting this Chris plan if I weren't twenty two I would be angry crying right now just because I think Marvel did such an amazing job with spider man and Sony and they kind of saves the character concerning I think mess it up some with Andrew Garfield Andrew Garfield am and it's I could enter Gardasil right actor and they did but they did the same thing with the new venom movie like Tom hardy would have been he is the perfect venom any such a great actor but they made such a forgettable movie yeah I hate that I did I said this to you yesterday and I hope this is right in the long run I kind of hope that these studios these major studios do maintain some distance from one another and and create products to compete because it doesn't seem like Disney's taking over everything I mean Disney on think about what does the US Disney owns the Muppets Disney owns Star Wars the entire franchise Disney owns all of marble Disney owns Disney ESPN and ABC I mean you just got unless you don't fox now you don't everything fox's ever produced all the movies that's on by Disney now no Disney plus is coming out the streaming service what is it next in two months or so October I believe they're coming out the streaming service to compete with net flex and they own everything the behemoth I'd like to see a Sony Sony studio exist that can actually produce something to compete with Disney because it feels like everything's a little to consolidate it now I agree with that but I just think taking that character that belongs to the Marvel universe is just absurd to me what's the contract on this and how long to Sony get to use the spider man character do we now it's like a crazy agreement they get a spider man four ever at the to the expense of Marvel and the thing that bothers me is that kind of set it up in the last movie far from home as far from home yes far from his when he goes overseas yeah they set it up in the last movie that he's is basically going to be the main adventure spider man and I was like the conflict he was having throughout the movie is like he wasn't sure if he was basically ready to be the main Avenger yeah so I don't really know what their plan is also the last movie ended on a cliffhanger I'm not gonna say what it is I haven't seen him yeah but ends on a cliffhanger and I'm just like and he's done really well for John by the way they've they've earned over a billion dollars worldwide so far on that movie it's been the I think the only smash success of the summer has been that's vitamins anyway it's wild he's a good he's good at that role but once again he's not actually American is neat nice British yeah what's what's the deal here I can we get Americans the plate American superheroes I have no idea but I think you did amazing and I think a lot of fans are very emotionally attached to Tom Holland as writer man why no one who is thank
