"To film spotting the last couple of weeks. Josh have seen some of the most high profile new releases we've had since movie theater shutdown back. In March Hamilton arrived on Disney plus two weeks ago. We talked about that on last week's episode also last week. I recommended Gina Prints by woods, the old guard with Charlene Darren. That came to Netflix's weekend. And that's when you caught up with Josh and they understand. You liked it. Maybe not as enthusiastically as I did, but you went forward. Okay? Yeah, consider me. Me a fan, I think I probably became a little more wearied by the gunplay. Which you mentioned was your talked about it probably a little more than you did, but yeah, definitely appreciated and think it's something that people should check out. Last weekend also saw the release of the World War Two thriller Greyhound with Tom Hanks that's on apple, plus neither of us have had a chance to see that yet, but fellow critics have assured us that the nation's fathers and grandfathers have a new favorite movie and Josh. Also last weekend, the new horror film relic available on demand. Palm Springs. The groundhog day inspired comedy which is available on. You saw relic. We both saw Palm Springs, and we'll give each of those a little bit of time later in the show, but first tires. Please cue up our review discussion of Christopher. Interstellar. We haven't mentioned our mission does not work if the people on our dead by the time you pull it off. That this far any human history, not far no! Doubt. Yes, you are yes, you are. Upon, its release in two thousand fourteen atom, we gave interstellar a robust thirty minute review. You were hugely enthusiastic. I was mixed to negative. You remain a big Fan and you've seen it sense I believe right. Yeah, all right in two thousand seventeen. They're going meter. Yup, at the music box theatre where it's going to be playing again this weekend actually here in Chicago in seventy millimeter interstellar currently ranked number two on your Nolan. List for me this. Who've review was my first revisit sense two thousand fourteen now on the two of us. The movie has a score of seventy four. Critic among critics that's considered generally favorable, and for what it's worth. Most of Nolan's movies hover around the seventies on metacritic Dunkirk. That's his highest rating there with a ninety four. So that's where we stood. But where do we stand now in two thousand twenty? Have you add them passed through a wormhole and come out on the other side to see the error of your ways have I been sucked into a black hole trapped behind some cosmic bookshelf as punishment until I admit the air of mine. We could relitigate are twenty fourteen debate. We could revisit the same points. We both brought up, but I'm not sure how fruitful that would be I'm happy to do some of that and I promise I will not bring up a certain nineteen, sixty eight sci-fi epic. You declared verboten when discussing interstellar listeners, they can revisit that whole discussion in the archives at film spotting dot net episode five fifteen. Today. I'd like to start where that review ended in a last-minute attempt to bring me on board Adam. You asked me if I wasn't just plain thrilled watching interstellar. If setting aside my complaints quibbles, I couldn't admit to having a thrilling movie going experience. I quickly answered in the negative and we moved on. Watching interstellar again, and this was before I, release into I review or even read what I had written about in two thousand fourteen. This was the exact question I found myself asking especially in the context of our overview with so many Nolan films fresh in my mind at their best. His movies do thrill me. They get me Giddy. There's always a moment. Nolan blows your Noggin, intellectually emotionally existential early, and all I can do is let out a Guffaw of appreciation. We've already talked about some of these. These moments in our overview. I think of Memento where Leonard says I'm chasing this guy. Nope he's chasing me. Or how about the image of the hats in the prestige? When we realize what's really going on here and I know you care less about it than I, do Adam, but the spinning top in those final moments of inception. Wow on twitter this week marking. The tenth. Anniversary Kevin Geogra- Nov, said this a decade later and I still remember the entire pact prescreening audience audibly gasping at the smash cut ending. That was me.

Tom Hanks goes to war (again) in the World War II drama 'Greyhound'

"A war slashed drama movie and something That looks pretty good. Yeah, I was shocked to see a Tom Hanks poster as well that it was funny because it's what's interesting about these. These films with Greyhound specifically because That trailer dropped. I think pre Cove it and I remember seeing the trailer and it was one of the few where I was, like, legitimately like that Looks really, really good ever saw? No, it's it's It's It's all. It's actually do you have that? Can you get provide assistance Officers there? Samantha, I certainly can. U S Navy commander Ernest Krause. It's so nice to be reading a synopsis. I feel so normal Ernest crosses assigned to lead an allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War two. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U boats. Although this is cross his first wartime mission, he finds himself embroiled. And what would become to be known as the longest largest and most complex naval battle in history. The battle of the Atlantic? Yeah, the trailer looks fantastic. And Tom Hanks already is just so watchable. He's just so interesting. And even when he does, you know, I mean, he does. I know I'll get even with this dramatic roles, the majority of what he does know her dramatic roles, but it doesn't seem to matter. Sort of what you know what, what acting gig he takes. He's able to bring something you know really compelling to it. And this movie just has me really, really excited on I just I like the fact that they're embracing the technology to go back and revisit some of these time periods. And to give us some or Hollywood eyes but still somewhat, You know, more accurate representations of what these particular battles were like. I know lot of

"19. So many of these big blockbuster movies are now going to be available on your TV as opposed to the movie theater, and this one was for the movie. Industry for the movie studios. This one must have been right on the line. Richard Roper, the new Tom Hanks movie Greyhound Big budget, lots of special effects. It's a World War two. Venture film right and they chose. They chose to go with Apple TV plus to release it. Exactly right. In fact, you know the beginning of this year way back in the day when we were going to movies in theatres I talked about this is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year because, as you mentioned it's a Tom Hanks film. And who has Dunmore in terms of entertainment movies and miniseries for World War two that Tom Hanks of her Saving Private Ryan and then band of brothers in the Pacific and Greyhound. He wrote this and actually stars in this row. And although it's not based on a true story, it's actually based on a novel. It's inspired by the very real events of the Battle of the Battle of Atlanta. Sick, which you know was waged on the Atlantic Ocean was longest running battle in all of World War two. And it was all about convoys of allied ships trying to get supplies across the pond, while German u boats were attacking from all ends. That's what this movie is all about. Now. The invention. Tom Hanks connection to war, too. And the press junket for the release of this film, So the people obviously they go out. They publicized All They want to talk to you about its Corona virus, right? Yeah, it's just tell your side of the times. Well and, of course, because Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, were among the very, very first public figures to test positive. I believe you could correctly. I believe they're in Australia make making a movie. So, you know, I understand that and Tom Hanks has got such a no, he has. He has earned a role as more than just an actor, writer director producer. He's someone who's been around for a long time, but involved in a lot of things very intelligent and Educated guy when it comes to current events, so people do want to hear from him Now. The unfortunate part about all of this row is that Greyhound is not a great movie. In fact, I'm giving it to and 1/2 stars for the biggest disappointment. And I'll tell you why you remember. A few months ago we talked to Harrison Ford, who had done a movie called Call of the Wild or the Procedure. I he talked about how in a lot of these battle movies, war movies. They overdo it with the CG, and he actually said member, he actually said there are too many bleeping planes in the sky in a lot of these movies, and that's exactly unfortunately, what happens here. They did film some of this aboard a ship, I believe was the Canadian ship. But mostly it's CG Iroh, and it's very obvious that it is because you know the swooping cameras. It's almost like a Michael Bay movie. And so many planes in the sky and so many ships, etc. And so great special effects and then a lot of technical jargon. The problem is, we don't get to know any of the other characters other than the Tom Hanks character, and we got Haven't we don't know what we talked about the great War movies and you and I have talked about a lot of them. We did a podcast around Memorial Day about some of the great American War films. We get to know the characters first, we're emotionally invested in them, and then if something happens to one of them, or there's heroics or tragedy, it has an impact in this movie. All the characters are so superficially drawn that at one point, but Tom Hankscharacter asked a guy on the ship. He gets his name wrong and goes. I'm sorry, I'm still learning who everybody else's. And I'm like we are, too and that's never a good thing in a movie like this. Wow. Oh, that's That is so disappointing. When does it I'm still gonna watch. When does it premiere tonight? Or tomorrow? Tomorrow? And I will say this, too. I do think it might look better on the big screen. You know, maybe those special effects on a giant screen they either could've been magnified or they would have played better. He watching it in a home viewing environment. It just took me out of the film like I'm saying, Well, they clearly did this with computer generated stuff, and I think they just fell in love with the

Apple and Paramount to make a deal for Martin Scorseses next movie

"I'm Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Melanie and Matt. The streaming wars as you know as many people who are listeners know are underway. Hbo Max Coming out onto the field of play this week. A lot of people finding it a little including me a little tricky to figure out how to get that even though as a spectrum customer I should be able to access it but it doesn't show up on my TV. Because I have Roku so it's some people can't find it. Some people like it but we are seeing apple seeming to up its game with some big high profile deals. They are spending money. It's a little reminiscent in some ways of the Netflix strategy. Where we seen them angling for high profile expensive awards movies awards prestige movies apple is now throwing. Its hat into that ring. You know backed by the might the economic might that wealth of Apple. Yeah and this is a big project. Martin Scorsese Film. Sources are saying it's between one seventy five two hundred million dollars depending on who you believe probably will go much higher than that given scores as he's track record. It's got Leonardo DiCaprio. It's called killers of the flower moon. And this is a really really interesting play for Apple. Because you saw Netflix's get a lot of attention for the Irishman last year. Whether it was good or bad you can debate that. But it got them into the Oscar conversation in a meaningful way. They didn't walk away with best picture but they were in the game and apple will likely be in the awards game when this movie eventually comes out. What's interesting here? Is the deal structure. You've done some reporting on that because it was originally paramount. Paramount got cold feet and it ended up at apple after a bidding war. After you know it was shopped around town and this is essentially. What I think is going to happen with a lot of movies. Going forward where they get developed at the studios than the price inches up inches up inches up studios where once upon a time they might have taken a risk on a big movie from a big director are now going to get cold. Feet and income streamers just clarify something about that. Paramount is not out of this game. Scorsese has his deal there and they did release them to shop this around but they own the property the underlying novel and this is a very dark period piece set in Oklahoma in the nineteen twenties. Leo DiCaprio originally was supposed to play a good guy. Paramount was really interested in that version. Then he changed it so that he was playing a kind of a villain character and I am told that paramount felt this is now a less commercial movie with the same budget which point they did say go ahead and shop at around and there was a really long pause and apple did step up but it is still a question of a deal with paramount because it is expected that paramount will at least get some sort of a percentage at pop probably released the film in theaters. Which is what. Scorsese did not get with the Irishman with net flicks so having explained all that. Let me say I would pay money? Actually to see tensor Endo's at Netflix's sit down and explain to me. The cost benefit analysis of having spent which I think was certainly over two hundred billion dollars on the Irishman. Yes they got nominated no they. Didn't you know we? They have all the data. How many people sat through it. Did anybody subscribed because of it. It's a black box for people like us but this is this is something that apple is now saying. We're in it. We're in it in a way that will make Scorsese happy with theatrical release and ironically make paramount happy because paramount will have its name on this movie and we'll probably get a good chunk of some kind of a piece of whatever box office it generates win it can get made because we're all stuck now waiting for protocols and an insurance policies to make filming possible so we will see. I will note. This isn't the only movie they bought. They bought Tom. Hanks's movie Greyhound from Sony for supposedly around seventy million. That movie was done studios will sell as you suggest Matt with movies. That you to bring in cash right now I would say many cases. It is not a great vote of confidence. When you see these deals made in the movie itself but it will be high profile. It is Tom Hanks and for Apple. They obviously decided it was worth

Your words matter. Choose them wisely.

"Welcome to hacking your leadership. I'm Chris and this is talent Tuesday. This weekly segment dedicated dolphins talent related for this talent. Tuesday episode. I WanNa talk about the way we speak to each other a few days ago. I happened to catch a documentary about Mister Rogers. There's been a lot of new content about an recently to the Tom Hanks movie on his life. That came out a few months ago. One of the things I learned that I found fascinating was a description and analysis of the way Mr Rogers spoke a longtime producer of the show was interviewed about how the crew had coined the term fresh referring to the language that Mr Rogers had supposedly admitted and it wasn't a new language specifically rather was very intentional way in which he spoke and the reasons behind it. The entire premise behind this way of speaking was the concept of anticipation meaning. Once he decided on the message he wanted to land and chose the words he wanted to use. He then played out the conversation in his mind and anticipated how a child would react to hearing those specific words. If the reaction was shaping up to be negative or if there was room for misinterpretation of the message he would rewrite the words and try again. This conversation within his own head would go over and over until he was confident he'd never inadvertently cause stress or anxiety in child and this meant literally every word on the show was carefully selected and scripted. There are no accidents and there was no advocating. A basic example would be how he never used the phrase your parents with groups of children because not all children know their parents. So instead he would say your favorite grownups. There are several examples of this process. Online where you can see the progress of these conversations and it's so smart if you have a minute after this episode Google Fetish steps and see what I'm talking about. I bring this up because I believe that when it comes to leadership our words matter to our message matters and I don't think enough leaders really consider this when communicating way back in September of two thousand seventeen. The eleventh hacking leadership was about the concept of intent versus impact and the importance of each. Lots of people argue that one is more important than the other and will. Each situation is unique. It's pretty clear that the people who consider both intent and impact are the people with the best interpersonal relationships. But something tends to happen when it comes to these discussions. Even our eleventh episode is guilty of it. The trade off between intent and impact is typically discussed in the context of potentially offending someone or giving them the wrong impression of your character where it typically isn't discussed is in the context of landing a message with your team in a compelling way away that means they both understand the message and are bought into it. A famous allegory reads give me six hours to cut down a tree and spend the first four sharpening my axe. It has real world implications on the prep-work required to get literally anything done right. No one wants to do the boring tedious work. That comes before they do the thing. Whatever that thing is no one wants to sharpen the x. Before cutting down the tree they just WanNa start chopping away. No one wants to stretch before working out they just WanNa start picking up weights. No one wants to check all the fluids in the tire pressure in their car. Before taking a road trip they just want to play on the music and drive many leads playbook or set of instruction when it comes to rolling out new strategy. They're told what the strategy is. What success looks like what the expected behaviors are and how to validate those behaviors and armed with this high level information? They scheduled time to disseminate everything to their people. But what many of them failed to do is spend time purposely crafting their words in a way that is most likely to land the strategy with their team. While eliminating room for misinterpretation in essence they failed. It'd be fresh about it if you're leader of people the next time you scheduled time with an employee or group of employees. Take the time to write out what you plan on saying and then practice it. I with yourself then someone else. Put yourself in the shoes of your employees. Think about how your words are going to be interpreted or potentially misinterpreted consider with you. Some confident not just confident in the fact that you know the information but confident your ability to demonstrate belief in the strategy. Lastly make sure your language doesn't inadvertently exclude anyone from the strategy over time. You'll find you get better at this process of preparation and eventually you'll be able to do it in your own head. In fact on some level you probably already do thanks for listening and have a great

You might be excited if your neighbor won the lottery but not the neighbors of a British man who won ten million pounds in two thousand and three and then did what with the money was IT A. He bought the house next door and created. Britain's first rat sanctuary in petting zoo be. He added an additional fifteen stories onto his house. Where see turned his yard into a demolition Derby Racetrack? I'm GonNa go with fifteen stories. Did he blocked everybody's view with his money. No he didn't he actually turned it into a demolition. Derby race track. You know. There's a lot of things a person could do with ten million pounds that's about. That's about the most sensible thing you could match up some car making note Tom for the quarantine is over anyway when neighbors complained he launched fireworks flares over their houses that somebody you knew how to live all right. You still have tumor chances. All right I'll take a little longer on this because I know you need to pad this show out so I've been listening in and I think there's a Lotta cuddle material all right. You've heard the story of the parrot who did swear far too much and insulted its owner until an anger. The owner grabbed the parrot and shoved it into his freezer above his refrigerator. And then when leaving in there for a few minutes he opened the door and the parrot was very contrite and said I want to apologize. My my language was used it. It was rude of me and I hope you can forgive me. And then the parrot said and by the way just. What did the chicken do in honor of that joke? I'm I'm going to. I'm going to vote for the foul mouth. "Delay hands on hair neatly is ticket oh yes i know it's tom hanks but that's great you know you really too and meryl streep's performances terrifically film gay days and that's why it's at the beginning is actually about that characters arc and look out for the jurassic park moment towards the end of the film when you say it i think you'll understand vibrations in the coffee hole that cannot be awaken it in the next will do cocoa and the commuter you'd be hardpressed as we've often said before to find a better communicate to then tom and merrill together is and who who knew they'd never been into film together before you would think i would have happened ages ago i would like to say however that turning everybody could have done that in view as well as you did not thought it was very lovely that the end of it tom hanks did indeed say good good job or whatever it was he said he met tom hanks way that makes you just feel like you're reclining into an armchair of safety he probably says had to everybody they're no simon quilted from the norfolk branch of the church of witted time i'm taking my 15yearold son to the cinema this weekend a rare event which means i want is to make the best choice of film possible okay we have naronha fielding year old some yep dan why it's either the dark dark historic case they are no old oak is now the post not post here both of which i'm sure i will enjoy the better not to show whether my son will be enthusiast host listened to the context of the email and then as an were even slightly lerone family experience okay okay us anemic home defending the key my son james his knowledge of the period of history during which the post he said is quite scant but his second mobile knowledge is much stronger yep like most 15year old he enjoys action and fastpaced movies but also enjoy something with emotion and bite this in mind i wanted to ask you both your opinion do i opt for the safe abed and go for the chilean drama or do i take a chance on steven spielberg by concern with the post is that my son may need to have knowledge of the period in question in order to enjoy the intricacies of the movie.
