"There's a Josh Arnold. Hi, hi. There's H Cosby. There's Willie griswold with a series of letters. Holy heck, I'm chick McGee and here's Tom Chris Wallace. Thank you very much. A couple quick things up. Oh, quick correction. Chick was talking about it. Is it a crime if you're just flailing your arms around a wax somebody in the face? And walk toward the crowd and just hit somebody. Am I in the wrong there? I don't know. I mentioned the robot. I called it space family Robinson. I think the show was called lost in space. Wasn't there a version called space family Robinson, maybe? They redid lost in space from a serious. I think it's on Netflix. They keep trying to recreate Battlestar Galactica. They're not going to get it done, but they keep trying, bless their hearts. If you have never seen Battlestar Galactica, it is absolutely brilliant. The I don't even know how to describe it. The updated version, not the I'm talking about the original. No, not the original. The original. The second, of course. Edward James Olsen. It's so weird that they'll take something in completely switch it around and it's even so much better than the original. Yeah. Sometimes they just want to keep the title because they don't have to create something out of that's brand new that people aren't familiar with. Now, where was I? Oh, I know. We were going to check in with chick McGee at the bob and Tom sports desk if we missed anything? So much, Tom. Golden State all star guards, Steph Curry has partial tears and a ligament and a membrane in his left leg and lower leg contusion the team says he'll be sidelined for they're not sure for how long possibly the rest of the season. Kyrie Irving got traded to the Dallas Mavericks from the Brooklyn next or the next Brooklyn next. That'd be funny, they're all giraffes. Yeah, that'd be they're all Duncan. I'd go see that. They would have to hold the basketball in their mouth. I'm concerned I'm actually given this a look to see how we can have the giraffe basketball team. And you're going to need that kid that cleans up the court a lot more. You may need a squeegee. They had Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills catching footballs on a trampoline in a cloud of smoke. Yes, that was the NFC AFC Pro Bowl games. And they also had three different flag football games, but if you shake it down, here's the result, Kirk Cousins through three touchdown passes Sunday and the flag football competition to rally the NFC to a 35 33 victory over the AFC in the Pro Bowl games. So there you go. And of course, we have coming up on Sunday. This year's biggest game in the history of the world at Super Bowl 57. Kansas City Chiefs and they landed first, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles and it's still eagles minus one and a half right now as I'm talking to you. And wing king and poultry prognosticator drew sirsa says Beth the ranch on Super Bowl Sunday. He set the over under at 1.45 billion chicken wings eaten in the wing king sports book, citing data from the national chicken council. And his own analysis of the industry. Americans are just so passionate about chicken wings, Willie, as we are about football. Chicken producers are back at full capacity. Good news. Remember when we had the chicken wing shortage? Yeah. We wouldn't stop. They stepped up at the chicken thighs to go. Chicken thigh, nothing to shake your head out. Amazing. I prefer the chicken thighs. Drew says buffalo wings remain a solid minus one 50 favorite against the field of all other wing flavors. Ranch dressing is the heavy condiment favorite over blue cheese. Dippers outnumber non dipper, 7 to three. And Super Bowl party. No, I'm sorry, go back to the game. What's the spread now in this? Minus one and a half, eagles are favored. Eagles are favored by minus. And it was minus two last week, so they know something. No, you're heading out their win. Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning, okay. Willie's going to be out there with kisaki kind of. Hope to hook up with our friend Frank Caliendo, the great comedian. What is he not returning your calls or something? Going back and forth with mister Kelly. Oh, you are in contact. Yes, I can contact with him. Why hasn't he decided he's going to go? What the hell is he got going? You know, Frank? I do know for okay, man. Now here we go. I mentioned rather mentioned flailing around and punching someone in the face, face accidentally. It's from this.

Well, you're welcome, Scott. And you're listening to weekend edition from NPR news. Ukrainian troops continue to try to win back Russian occupied territory. Their efforts have been successful in the northeast of the country, but Moscow aligned forces still hold large chunks in the east and the south of Ukraine, and one of the big questions is whether Ukraine can win back the southern city of her son, and Paris Jason Bobby and talk to some of the Ukrainian soldiers who are involved in that counter offensive. In a village in the hairston region that was seized by Russian forces soon after the February invasion, a woman now sells coffee and snacks to Ukrainian soldiers out of a window in her house. The front line has shifted repeatedly here, but in early October, caves forces one back hundreds of square miles of territory on the West Bank of the nipro river. Much of that territory was farmland and sparsely populated small villages like this one. Luca is a scout for an intelligence unit with Ukraine 63rd mobile infantry brigade. He says this type of combat, a counter offensive against a dug in enemy is complex. I made them. It's more difficult because they are dug in and we are moving and we are just out in the open without any cover. He says one machine gunner can cause a lot of damage to advancing infantry, Luca, along with all the Ukrainian troops we talked to is only authorized to give his first name. He says defending a position is far easier than taking it. For example, to take the position which is held by 5 people, you need 40, 50 people. You need more soldiers to fire on this position to make it possible for our troops to move forward. In the first days of October, the Russian troops on the edges of occupied Harrison quickly retreated, but they pulled back to areas fortified with land mines, trenches, and sandbagged machine gun positions. Lucas says they've even dug their tanks in to pits making them harder to hit. One of Lucas colleagues are ten says offensive maneuvers need to be well coordinated and ideally should strike with as much force as possible at the enemy's weakest position. For a successful counterattack, you need infantry. Artillery, drones, aircraft, armored vehicles. You need everything. This may help explain part of why Ukraine's progress in this part of the country has slowed. Gregory also with the 63rd brigade is from an artillery unit. He says the initial shift momentum in the fighting in this region came as a result of the arrival of western weapons. Gregory runs a team of 6 soldiers that operates a Soviet era, howitzer, the massive gun can launch artillery shells at targets up to ten miles into enemy territory. In the beginning, when we got here it was harder because after we had fire one or two shots, the Russians would respond with dozens of shells. They wouldn't worry about conserving their ammunition. But when western rocket systems, including the high Mars arrived, that allowed Ukrainians to hit Russian targets up to 50 miles away. Gregory says they focused on blowing up Russian munitions and fuel storage facilities. All of a sudden, the Russians started conserving their ammunition, he says. Oleg, a former lawyer who is now the press officer for the 63rd brigade, says these western rocket systems have made it harder for the Russians to get fuel food and ammunition to their troops on the front line. And for now it's enough just that the Russians know that the western artillery is here. We might not even use it, but because of its presence here, they need to keep their storage much farther away. The next big challenge facing the 63rd brigade and the other Ukrainian troops fighting in this region is whether they'll be able to retake the city of hair song, which is the only regional capital that the Russians have managed to seize since the February 24th invasion. "Yeah, like just, I don't know, I think about the passenger train mechanics. You've got these cardboard tokens that represent trains in front of you, right? And each of these little train carriages has an outline of a cube to demonstrate that each carriage on a train can carry a cube a resource basically. And you can flip these tokens and then they depict little passenger cars. And you can put passengers on your train, and this gives you a drip of income every round. You flip three carriages over into three little passenger tokens. That means you're getting 30, what's the currency in this game, Tom? Golden's. Yoga is 30 golden's around. That's a fantastic trip of money. Considering it's an 8 round game and our final Tom's funnel score was like 500 goldens. That sounds great. How much did Tom and I interact with this mechanic? Hardly at all. Because like, in any other Euro game, getting to have passengers or like, I don't know, the mechanic of work is getting better is really cool. If you don't use a worker on a given round, you slide them to the right because basically rather than building train tracks, they were at school. And then they become a better worker. And all of these mechanics imply that you'd be able to get a little economy going, you get more workers, you get in more schooled workers, get more drip income. No. Like the game is so tight that your workers will never have time to go to school. You will never have time to build a passenger trains, and yet it's not a cruel game, the puzzle. What are you talking about? It is so cruel. Well, but like, it's hard, but it's not mean. Like food chain magnate is mean. This game is just difficult. I don't know. I mean, what I'm interested about here is that you and I.

"Seeing girls, they just want you. That picked the most expensive place you can go in the food usually not no good. I mean, they don't have fried chicken on the plate. I mean, you know, they want to go these little sociopolitical country girls. Don't waste time with fine Italian wines, do they? No, no, they drank beer straight out of the can found S out here to grill for you. I mean, we've put the grill up and that's just how we do it in the country. And when we have a bug, I'm talking about Bob Ross. Will you be careful there? Author is in San Francisco. Paul. I'm not sure if you heard, but I was first four out and I had to go to the NIT of the caller bracket. I did hear that. I got knocked out first round too. But you have, but you have Arkansas and Gonzaga in your crib this weekend. Man, in a pavlovian type of way, I've heard you say San Francisco more times on the show today than I have ever heard in my years of listening. Arkansas come in the must buses coming. We're excited to have them. I'll be there at Chase center Thursday. And so we hope to see all the fans come. Byron, we also talk about Todd golden. I've been following the dawn for a long, long time, and I'm not going to call it a home run hire for Florida. You know, I think Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly, those are home run hired. But the Dons played really well this year. It is not easy to get a mid major at large business. And is this Bill Russell school from the 50s? Even Paul even you are an old enough to remember him. But yes, this is. Okay. Wow. Yeah, this is a school that has that history. It's an urban campus school in the city. And they even in the 70s, I believe, reached a number one ranking. I want to say with Bill Cartwright, but that's a little bit before my time. But yeah, but the school has not made the tournament in since the 90s. And this was their first time in as in that large. And I get a lot of credit to Tom golden. You know, I think it's really telling that they're officially there's no openings in the car 12, but I think of a school like calend Berkeley or a school like Stanford thought they could have gotten thought they could have afforded him to give him the resources. They would have left their current coaches. And we're up against a bright, but thank you for the call. We're coming right back. Hey, it is a Bonnie Jones. What's your favorite podcast? Let me tell you why that'll be number two after you listen to mine. Three times a week and I'm gonna challenge you to keep up with me as I discuss topics from the latest in technology and music. "Putin from destroying Ukraine In fierce Johanna cassis in Poland thanks so much You're welcome Scott This week we are in an operating room at Houston methodist hospital where doctor Osama gave her head of the hospital's transplant program chat in front of a small bowl of ice and slush that it turned bright red Like a summer punch There was a human kidney in that bowl It had just been removed from the living body of a man and was about to be transplanted into the body of a woman who needed it Doctor Gabriel told us it's amazing It's not just that it's somebody's kids their ability to take it out and put it in and make it reduce your give somebody this amazing life When I first started doing transplantation I used to hate doing living donor transplants The penalty was too high You know your wife husband brother or whatever wants to give you a kidney The emotional investment they make in giving you that Then we have to make sure that you're safe Then we have to make sure that the kidney works and the recipient It was very stressful I didn't like to do it I thought we had enough or should have enough cadaver transplants to not do this A fact of the mother is we have almost a 130,000 people on the kidney waiting list So that's why I've been over the past few years I've changed my mind completely and became a great supporter of living knowledge Next week on this program ten strangers brought together in a chain of life And now even in times like these it's time for sports Russia and Belarus banned from another world sports event Will there be a baseball season and when coach case final home game Now joined by NPR's Tom Goldman Tom thanks so much for being with us Good morning Scott The international Paralympic committee changed its original position It's not going to prohibit athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in the winter games that are happening now wanted to change course Pressure from national Paralympic committees and mainly from athletes The original decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes It was hugely criticized Scott and it got to the point where there were threats of boycott at the paralympics rising tensions in the athlete's village So the international Paralympic committee IPC reverse course The committee didn't want violence It didn't want the controversy to overwhelm the games and turn the focus away from the great athletes in the great stories and Scott how about this for a great story Ukraine is on the top of the medal standings after day one of competition With three gold total of 7 the Ukrainian team leader called it a miracle that they even got to China One of the gold medalists in the men's vision impaired by Athlon race dedicated his medal to quote the guys protecting our cities Strong words from the international Paralympic committee president weren't there not that they know that in China Yeah As an Olympic official IPC president Andrew Parsons was supposed to maintain political neutrality as International Olympic Committee officials maddeningly did during last month's very political Winter Olympics So Parsons created controversy simply by denouncing war in his opening ceremony speech He said he was horrified by Russia's invasion of Ukraine although he didn't mention Russia by name but reportedly Chinese state TV still censored his words on the live broadcast China having refused to condemn Russia for the invasion Players making their voices heard in baseball's labor negotiations or non negotiations aren't they Yeah you know last time regular season games were canceled due to a work stoppage the damaging players strike in 1994 95 There wasn't social media There is now obviously players are using it to the hilt to try to connect with fans explain and apologize for the current mess which actually was initiated by team owners locking out players last December this week the ongoing labor impasse led the Major League Baseball commissioner to cancel the start of the season Players are sending resolute about changing of financial system they say keeps them undervalued and underpaid is baseball revenues grow They are waging a good PR battle right now but owners have the upper hand financially If this thing continues to drag on and Scott you're hearing some baseball pundits say we may not see baseball until may at the earliest Last one game tonight for the great duke do coach Mike ski coacher duke since 1985 national championships also won three consecutive gold medals for the U.S. at the Olympics and he never struck a player through a chair across the court What else could you say about what a boring guy Yeah he just won more men's games than any division one coach ever treated his players with respect There's going to be a lot said about him tonight for sure as he coaches his last home game at duke's hallowed Cameron indoor stadium There will be pre and postgame ceremonies nearly a hundred former duke players accepted invitations to be their ticket prices averaging about $5000 He better not lose this one too Scott 'cause duke's playing arch rival North Carolina in no way he wants to leave Cameron with a loss to the targets We have to acknowledge a couple of losses in the sports world this week don't we We do Shane Warren the great Australian cricket bowler That's like the pitcher in baseball He was rockstar famous died of a suspected heart attack at the relatively young age of 52 And then a tragic death and women's collegiate soccer Stanford goalkeeper Katie Meyer of vibrant popular young woman died by suicide She was only 22 Heartbreaking losses for all of us not just the sports world and pierce Tom golden Thanks very much Good to talk with you Good to talk to you You're listening to weekend "Beijing's winter Olympic Games begin in empty stadiums but lots of fireworks and a former Miami Dolphins coach Susie NFL from racial discrimination Now from daydream by NPR's time both in Tom thanks so much for being with us Thanks for having me Scott I gotta ask from over here It looks like you're going through a nasal swabs and robot bartenders and looking at empty seats Doesn't sound like a lot of fun It's challenging I've been lucky to cover the Olympics 14 times including this one In the past the lofty ideal the International Olympic Committee talks about uniting the world You can actually experience that in random meetings with athletes and fans from around the globe This time though no fans very few actually we're extremely limited in our access to athletes And the feeling is more one of separation There are fences everywhere There are guards everywhere A gate opens in our hotel to let our bus in and out And it only goes to the press center We can travel to venues to watch athletes but nowhere else I mean we're seeing China and Chinese people out of the windows of those buses or taxis or trains And it's frustrating not to get more of a flavor of this vast place And of course our diplomatic boycott is going on a number of nations including the United States Do you expect the world's concern about China's human rights policies to become a part of these Olympics You know it's already been part of this past week and it was expected before the game started It was talked about The IOC president Thomas Bach was asked if he had a message for the Uyghur minority that according to the U.S. government and others is enduring a cultural genocide Bach repeated what he's often said He's not going to talk politics because that would destroy the mission of the Olympic Games to again unite the world So the IOC apparently feels condemning documented genocide is playing politics Now the sports schedules fully underway traditionally that's when non sports issues fade at the games It seems like that might happen again here unless something happens and athlete protests an athlete speaks out But to do that would be a risk since Chinese organizers are on record saying athletes face punishment if they do speak out A couple of athletes have already earned metals together That is correct We had our first gold medal of the games It went to a Norwegian cross country skier Theresa Johan with a dominating win in her event The last event of the day was a perfect ending for the host country In short track speed skating the mixed team relay which really is this amazing chaotic looking thing but they're all in perfect sink Mix team relay with men and women The gold went to China by just a fraction of a second all the team members were in tears after the win We're looking ahead to tomorrow already Scott and the always exciting men's downhill kicks off Alpine skiing skiers have been clocked as fast as 85 miles an hour on this Olympic course called The Rock Which is new to all the skiers since there weren't any of the usual test events at the site before the games because of the pandemic So this unknown quality except for a few practice runs this week might mean the race is wide open still the favorite is top ranked downhiller Alexander Omar killed it from Norway We have to note all too briefly Tom Brady announced his retirement this week Greatest of all time I believe Miami Dolphins coach braying Flores has alleged a system of racial discrimination and has filed a lawsuit Why in 2022 after so many vows there's only one NFL team ever had go to black Yeah well that's a really good question And I will let Bryan Flores answer that This is from his appearance this week on the new NPR podcast the limits with J Williams here he is This is about you know something that's much bigger than me which is a system in the NFL that in my opinion is broken as far as hiring practices for black and minority coaches and minorities in general And it's got the lawsuit claims the system's broken for a number of reasons A major one being approximately 70% of NFL players are black But there are no black people and ownership only two of the 32 NFL teams have owners who are non white And the owners aren't putting people of color an important positions like head coach The NFL denies these allegations of discrimination and says it'll fight the lawsuit and beer Tom golden thanks so much You're welcome Scott This is a really tough time to try and buy a car according to Kelly blue book the average used car is selling for 42% more than pre-pandemic And piers Camila domino ski has been talking to shoppers and sellers Kimberly walker recently dove into both ends of the auto market On the luxury side she financed an electric Audi for herself at a price that made her eyes pop The dealer wanted 68,000 for a late model used vehicle We went back and forth we were there for four hours They did not budge on that price Then her daughter needed a cheap older vehicle At their $5000 budget pickings were slim We ended up purchasing a 2009 Toyota Camry that actually was not running at the time But the mechanic agreed to put a new engine in it and gave it to us for $3500 So there you have it folks You can still buy a car for less than 5 grand If you don't need it to run right away This market is frustrating for anyone looking for a vehicle But it's a real crisis for some shoppers on a budget This is troubling Matt Jones is with true car The people who are looking for need based transportation as opposed to want based transportation the folks who are looking for the traditional ten or $12,000 car that has 95,000 miles Those folks are having a very difficult time in this market right now Blame snarled supply chains for this situation A lack of parts especially semiconductors has limited how many vehicles automakers can produce and in response companies are focusing on making their bigger.

"Of the best known head coaches in the NFL is suddenly out of a job and not because his team is losing Jon Gruden led Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl victory in 2003 He was also a TV football analyst before He was brought back to coaching by the Las Vegas Raiders Last night he resigned after it was revealed he sent years of emails containing racist misogynistic and homophobic language NPR sports correspondent Tom Goldman is with us Tom so John Gruden was coaching Sunday and now today he is gone What led up to us at a sudden departure A just last Friday It was revealed that Gruden sent an email in 2011 in which he used racist language to refer to NFL players union head to Morris Smith who is black At the time it appeared to be a bad yet isolated incident from a decade ago Then yesterday The New York Times reported it was an isolated The report said the NFL accumulated a bunch of emails stemming from leagues investigation into workplace misconduct at the Washington football team the emails were between Gruden and former Washington team president Bruce Allen and sometimes several others in the email group all high powered white men And in the emails over about a 7 year period Gruden lashed out at people in and around the NFL including commissioner Roger Goodell He railed against player protests during the national anthem the advent of women referees the drafting of an openly gay player in 2014 Now Gruden who is celebrated by fans over the years for his snarly tough guy football image he used homophobic and misogynistic language as he railed according to The New York Times report The language as ugly as it gets Now when this came out yesterday was it that long then before Gruden resigned right Right He had what was reported as an emotional meeting with Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis who in 2018 lured Gruden back into coaching after nearly a decade as a TV football analyst after their meaning Gruden released a statement announcing his resignation saying he didn't want to be a distraction and quote I'm sorry I never meant to hurt anyone But chances are he did This is a league where nearly 70% of players are African American and on Gruden's raiders is now former team Carl NASA is the first openly gay active player What's been the reaction so far Plenty on Twitter one reaction of note from former NFL player Emmanuel acho He tweeted Jon Gruden had to go immediately and not one person should blame cancel culture This is called accountability Acho also recorded a short statement Here's part of it This is why it's imperative to have minorities as voices and faces in positions of power and society So you don't have rampant ignorance running around like this And what he says they're about to more minorities in positions of power the NFL has been criticized over the decades for a lack of minority and female representation Absolutely it has a lack of representation in the league positions of power the coaching ranks for an offices And there's been valid criticism on other fronts as well the Lee being slow to react on the issue of domestic violence The league essentially banning Colin Kaepernick for his protests during the national anthem protests against social injustice and police brutality And in recent years the NFL has been trying to answer the criticism and show its changing So you can see why John Gruden has gone so quickly Everything he reportedly said in those emails flew in the face of what the NFL's trying to do That's NPR sports correspondent Tom golden Tom thanks You're welcome Nuclear secrets navy submarines and a peanut butter sandwich They're all at the center of a federal proceeding in a West Virginia courthouse today Right So an engineer for the U.S. Navy and his wife are making their first court appearance since being charged with trying to sell military secrets The Justice Department says the couple tried to hand off those secrets to a foreign power Instead they were arrested as part of an FBI sting operation NPR justice correspondent Ryan Lucas joins us now to tell us about the case Ryan there are details in this complaint that read like a spy novel Not a great one maybe a bad one but so who's this couple and what are they accused of Well they are Jonathan Toby and his wife Diana they live in Annapolis Maryland He works as a nuclear engineer for the navy his focus has been on naval nuclear propulsion and he had top secret security clearance His wife Diana is a humanity's teacher at a private school and prosecutors say that she was in on this alleged scheme here Now according to court papers this whole thing started back in 2020 when the FBI got its hands on a package that prosecutors say Toby mailed to a foreign government seeking to establish a sort of covert relationship providing secret information In exchange for money court papers don't say which country it was But the FBI poses representatives of that unnamed country and went back and forth with Toby communicating through encrypted channels And court filings say that led to a series of exchanges in which Toby left small digital cards filled with thousands of pages of information in so called dead drops The FBI says his wife acted as a lookout on a couple of occasions when he left these small packages of information And in return they got paid by the undercover FBI agents in cryptocurrency Dead drops Tell us more about dead drops A dead drop is in essence a secret hiding place that spies used to pass information In this case prosecutors say Toby had these digital cards inside things left at the dead drops He allegedly hid them inside a band aid package a gum wrapper And in one instance he allegedly wrapped the digital card in plastic put it inside half of a peanut butter sandwich that was placed in a plastic bag The thing here of course is the FBI was watching Toby as he serviced these various dead drops And there's the peanut butter sandwich All right So what do we know about the kind of information that could have been not sold here Well according to the government this was serious stuff Prosecutors say the information included schematic designs and operating parameters and other things for the U.S. Navy's Virginia class nuclear powered submarines which court papers describe as fast attack submarines with the latest and stealth and weapons technology They cost around $3 billion apiece This information could certainly help a foreign power build submarines equipped with nuclear propulsion systems It's the kind of technology that was a subject to that recent deal between the U.S. Britain and Australia that caused such a rift with France when the U.S. cut France out of the deal So this is very closely held stuff Have we heard anything from the couple yet Not yet no They were arrested over the weekend in West Virginia as of last night It was still unclear whether they'd hired an attorney But they are scheduled to make their initial appearance in federal court today in martinsburg West Virginia Prosecutors have already indicated in court filings that they want the Toby's to remain in custody The government says the couple possibly faces life in prison if they are indeed convicted and go to trial and therefore they say that they pose a risk of flight That's NPR's Ryan Lucas Brian thanks a lot Thank you.
