"One from the south out of Crimea a province of Ukraine which Putin seized in 2014 CBS News national security correspondent David Martin CBS News special report I'm Tom fordie Double DT go P at one 32 Friday morning For more now CBS News chief Washington correspondent major Garrett who hosts the takeout podcast this morning tells WTO how he sees all this playing out We have to develop a new language for a new reality when we haven't had to converse in almost 80 years We have a land war in Europe for the first time since the end of World War II Yes there were incursions into the Prague in Prague and Budapest during the Cold War But those were client states of the Soviet empire and they were uprisings there that at least some level of believability The Soviets were pressing down upon That's not what's happening here Ukraine is a sovereign country that is being invaded by a hostile neighbor And the consequences of that if it goes beyond Ukraine directly threaten NATO and a wider war And the architecture of the last 80 years has been no organized ground conflict in Europe because of the possibility of that bringing in nuclear weapons held by the Russians or the United States We're now on that trajectory for the first time in 80 years and wrapping our heads around it is a bit of a challenge Not only are we on that trajectory but Vladimir Putin is making some very strong promises of retaliation How's that landing in Washington Well that's what I mean And in our conversations mine and my CBS colleagues with European diplomats with members of Congress with those in the administration when president Putin talks about reactions if there is aggression against Russian troops the likes of which you haven't seen or experienced that can only mean one thing He's threatening the idea of a potential nuclear retaliation No one really believes that's going to happen But many didn't believe he would carry out a full scale invasion which he is carrying out now So you can't rule those kinds of things out The most immediate concern based on my reporting and my CBS colleagues is those in Europe fear very much in the next 48 to 72 hours and encirclement of the capital of Kyiv and decapitation of that government and a puppet state being erected in Ukraine and at de facto taking over of that country And then a challenge to the west what do you do about that The Biden administration put sanctions in but it knows and the world knows those are slow moving their economic and Putin is still insulated from that because all the oligarchs will be touched by them He's put an airplane in positions There is no democratic way to challenge Putin based on what he has done within the country So it's a very tough situation Major before we go wanted to ask you about this only hours before the Russian invasion began former president Trump again praised Vladimir Putin using words like pretty smart and genius We heard similar words from Mike Pompeo the former Secretary of State What's going on with these people I really don't have an explanation for it Other than to say at some tactical level you can understand if you sympathize with Putin and his explanation in his words of the history of Ukraine which is about long dead Bolsheviks from 1917 and what Lenin did I guess you could say there is some strategic intelligence behind what he's doing but it completely misses the key point which is the sovereign country invaded by a hostile neighbor in.
