Religious-based coronavirus vaccine conspiracies circulating online

"Of speech, freedom to practice religion, both pillars of American democracy. But those two freedoms have come together on social media in a way that may threaten to spread misinformation about the covert 19 vaccine. Reporting on this in The Washington Post is Elizabeth Dwoskin. She spoke with Cuomo's Tom Cutler. We've heard the bogus claims about microchips and vaccines for months now, But when did that claim and others start to target Christian communities online? Um, well, it's been it's been targeting Christian community is all year really? And but one of them more. Kind of Interesting aspect of this is how some of these conspiracy theories that you may have heard have blended into religious thought, particularly Samora, apocalyptically minded meanies that believe in the end times and you may have seen on Facebook. People talking about how the vaccine contains the mark of the beast, which is a passage relates to a passage from revelations. Um, amount. Facebook has said that they have banned list and in response to my increase Tic tac is so that they banned that hashtag. But it raises a lot of questions around religion, because when I spoke to a lot of people who put off this miss operation, they said that they were just raising questions. It was really just discussion they wanted to have. And actually, you see all over YouTube. On other sites. You see a lot of religious leaders in this country, leaders of churches and ministries trying to debate is that the mark of the beast and so you don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Um In the kind of in his conversation. What about you reporting your piece here that the pope is in favor of Catholics getting the vaccine and other prominent religious leaders have said the same thing. Our social media influencer is getting Maura traction than the pope. Yeah, In some cases. Yeah, That's a really good question, because you have Certain very prominent religious leaders, including a prominent practice leader and the pope. Who, when I had Dr Baxter wanted to get the vaccine publicly, you know to really help this promotion effort. And yet you have combating against it. This tide of misinformation in the rank and file and it is a good question of whether of these leaders. World religious leaders will because they have a lot of authority, you know, and for people who are religious, they're going to have more authority may have more authority in public health organizations. It's from within. Your own community that you can be swayed and I think that's a Really interesting question of whether these religious leaders, combined with the actions of the tech companies make a difference or whether some of these beliefs have already kind of percolated unchecked for the last year. On social media and in many churches around the country. I really wish we had more time to talk about. This is a fascinating piece, and I would urge listeners to take a look at Washington Post Comets By Elizabeth Dwoskin Elizabeth. Thanks so much for your time

There is a likely explanation of it has to do with the fact that many states report pediatric cases is anyone under the age of 24. In fact, the CDC recently released A pretty in depth report on this phenomenon, and what they found is if you look at patients under the age of 18 and actually tracks pretty closely with a Donald infection rates. President Biden offered his foreign policy vision in a speech at the State Department this week, telling diplomats that he has their backs and that diplomacy is back again. John Hudson covering it for the Washington Post. He spoke with Cuomo's Tom Cutler, one of the biggest changes in U. S foreign policy is the nation's stance on the war in Yemen. What's the new course of action under President Biden now? Yeah, that's right. So President Biden announced that we would be withdrawing offensive support for the war, Yemen Essentially in terms of details what that means. So far, it means limiting sales of precision guided missiles to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is obviously been The country, leaving leading a multi coalition bombing campaign in Yemen for several years that has resulted little number of civilian casualties and what the U. Coalition effort. It should be pointed out that actually US support started under the Obama administration. It was continued in the Trump administration on now, some of the same people who were in charge of our foreign policy during the Obama years are now bringing it to an end. The real question to see in the further it is, if targeting in all types of assistance that was provided to the Saudis in this war are going to be ended. Some of those details air to come. There's one of the malls being juggling the air them. There are human rights abuses in China, there is they're cool and Myanmar. Political oppression in Russia. He wants to get back into the Iran nuclear deal that Trump withdrew from. Hey, want to get into back into a lot of other international organizations that Trump pulled out of mainly being the World Health Organization on getting back into the Paris climate accord? More than half of Americans increased their credit card debt because of Covid

"New report that shows more than half of American adults? Added to their credit card debt since March of 2020 credit cards dot com. Industry analyst Ted Rossman takes a closer look at it with Cuomo's Tom Cutler. I would imagine Kobe 19 is playing a pretty significant part of the reason for this debt. Yes, Absolutely. So we found 51% of Americans with credit card debt have added to it since March, 2020. 44% of them. Almost half specifically blamed the pandemic and on the face of it. I'm actually a little surprised. These numbers are not higher, but I think it brings up this case shaped recovery idea. Basically, some people are doing well. They're working from home. They're saving money because they're spending less. They're paying down dead with their stimulus home values up their stocks around. Some people are doing just fine. But then there's the other people that we worry about people that are using their cards to get by, perhaps to sustain them during a period of job loss. Okay. What about when it comes to making at least the minimum credit card payments And I know you advised to make more than that. But for those who are just going to be able to scrape up enough to make them enemies, what about that employment is a really big risk factor here. We found that About two thirds of people in credit card debt, saying that if they can't work now or in the future that would have an effect on their ability to make those minimum payments, 50% said. It would be a major effect, so that was the biggest of anything we asked about. We also asked about the continued surge and covert cases we asked about vaccine availability. We asked about stimulus. Being able to work is the number one thing that comes to people's minds when it comes to their confidence in paying off their credit card debt, And we certainly know about the unemployment numbers. What about overall personal debt close to seven and 10? Say they haven't. That's a lot of people, but that's pretty much unchanged with the past and I would note that some dead is good debt in the sense that it gives you a place to live. It gives you a car to drive around. Improves your earning power through a college education. I mean, not that we love debt, but sometimes it's a necessary tool. I think there's a bit of a silver lining in this finding, which is that People are generally optimistic about being able to pay it off. We found that 64% of debtors think they'll be deaf free within 10 years. It's not really that long in the big picture, and only 7% think they'll die in debt. That's down substantially. It was 30% 3 years ago, so people are actually feeling better and I think it gets back to the fact that you're home values up your stock portfolio is up. There's reasons for optimism. Despite the pandemic. Well,

U.S. to require negative COVID-19 test for international travelers

"Once again. Pandemic is altering the way that the world travels starting this month. All international travelers who wish to enter the United States must show proof of a negative Corona virus test. Lori Aratani is covering it for the Washington Post. She spoke with Cuomo's Tom Cutler. We're almost a year into this pandemic. Now, why did it take so long for testing international travelers to become kind of a blanket requirement? It's a combination of things. This is something that the CDC has pushed for for for several months, Eh? So there was some resistance, I think within the administration, there is also the question of whether there were enough tests to be able to do something like this. No. Clearly that's changed. This will greatly expanded testing program that they testing requirement that they had put into place in December for folks that were coming from the UK to now it's any international traveler. President Trump says he opposes violence in a statement read on the House floor as members debate impeaching him for his role in For mething the violence insurrection of the capital last week as writers converged on the capital building. The grounds normally hailed as the seat of American democracy, became a melting pot of extremist groups, militia members, white supremacists, paramilitary organizations. And fanatical supporters of the outgoing president stood shoulder to shoulder unified in rage last week, and we're learning more about the increased security measures that will be in place for President elect Biden's inauguration a week from today, Some of the National Guard protecting the capital will be armed. And there's new, incredibly disturbing intelligence. There's one estimate of more than 10,000 angry Trump's supporters coming to the nation's capital, many of them armed. One scenario brief to Congress involved heavily armed radicals assaulting the capital and potentially other locations like the White House. One reason authorities are worried is that they have identified individuals talking about assassinating politicians. Including Chicago Area man who allegedly had been discussing killing leaders in Washington in order to block Biden's inauguration. I know it sounds crazy, and they're still vetting the credibility of some of these threats, but after last week no one I'm talking to is willing to say it can't happen. "Hunter. The number of Americans looking for unemployment aid fell slightly to 787,000 this week, evidence of a job market stumbling in the face of the viral pandemic and the damage it is inflicted on the economy. Nearly 10 months. Mark Hamrick, senior economic analysts at Bankrate talked about these numbers, which reflect a slight decline for the previous week, but also showed that many employers they're still cutting jobs as the pandemic titans business restrictions and leaves anxious consumers to stay home 42 weeks into the economic downturn related to the pandemic, and we're still seeing historically elevated do claims levels that were Worse than what we saw during of natural crisis and great recession and again 42 weeks into this, it won't be that long until it would have been a year and in the state of Washington we saw week over week increase in 10,000 to 4 30,000 to claim so. You're out on the roads this year because of the pandemic that should have translated into fewer bad crashes, right, But it's not been the case. Como's Carleen Johnson has a close up unimaginable to think of getting that knock on the door that your young daughter or son has been killed in a car crash. But somehow, five days before Christmas, it's all the more wrenching Shelly Baldwin with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. I've heard them talk and the trauma that they face. And it's traumatic no matter what person you are in that crash. You live with that if you're a survivor, and it changes your life forever, and when it's young Children, it's just Oh, it's so heartbreaking crash early Sunday into coma on Marine View Drive, a young team was killed at the scene when the car she was a passenger in slammed into a power pole to other teams were badly injured. Investigators have released no official cause for the crash. But it was one o'clock in the morning and raining fourteens of the car, Baldwin says. Not a good combination. We were to look at the totality of traffic crashes. Maybe 4%. Involved something that was totally unavoidable. These things that can happen right? But 94% of the time. It was a decision that we didn't have to make or that we could have made differently That would have prevented the worst case scenario. 30% of all fatal crashes between 2014 and 16 involved a young driver and during that same time period 83% of fatal crashes involving young drivers. "The holiday season is in full swing. And with Shannon Kelly and Tom Cutler, we're gonna talk about matters of the heart today for the second week in a row. Gonna be talking with Dr Cynthia Warner, who is based out of ever right, Shannon and is a cardiologists. That's right, Tom. She's a cardiologists here in Everett with Providence and Dr Warner is on with us doing a cardiac serious because we felt it was really important to talk about these signs and symptoms that you may have. And particularly right now, we're worried that people might be sitting at home with chest pains or things going on in their heart, but are afraid to get attention or go see seek medical attention. Because of covert in the pandemic, But it's safe and we want people. No, don't sit at home with these symptoms. Shannon Kelly and Dr Warner Dr Warner again Thanks for joining us, you're doing a great job, setting up potential heart problems with the treatment of medic. Breast cancer from the different types of medication. You talked about two different types of medications. Maybe you can dive down on that a little bit and talk about how you monitor that from a cardiology standpoint. And maybe ultimate goal and results so from the two types of medication therapies that we talked about on in terms of Herceptin On. They can cause a weakening of the heart muscle on variable in terms of incidents, depending on your risk factors, but can be up to 8%. As well as ah, development of congestive heart failure, which is less but still a risk of up to about 3%. With the Herceptin types of treatments. The symptoms or cardiac events that tend to happen tend to happen during active treatment, but most of them are temporary and reversible with either dozing adjustment. Or temporary cessation of treatment and initiation of cardiovascular agents, the other type of medicine that we talked about or class of medicines or the anthro cyclones, such as the Doctor Robison, otherwise known as Adrian Myson and orange derivatives. And those can have similar types of effects on weakening of the heart muscle ranging all the way to clinical heart failure. The Overall presence of it. Incidents is about the same a little bit less than the Herceptin. However, the effects can last longer and be more permanent in either case for both types of medications. Really important as we mentioned before to get baseline and monitor want her heart function and overall heart health both during and after treatment. On been creating a like I said, Multi Justin a disciplinary approach and plan to help catch these things early. What would be some maybe early indicators of signs of Maybe Hartwall potential dysfunction that a patient should be aware of Part of the range of those cardio toxic effects can be totally asymptomatic. So with your oncologist in forming a treatment plan We look at your heart if you're going to be exposed to these cardio toxic drugs before you even received treatment as well as during treatment, because your heart function can start to decline in the absence of any symptoms. Now, on the other side of that, if that goes on on checked and uncorrected than that can lead to clinical heart failure, which is the manifestation of the heart function not being Working correctly or sufficiently, and that is with shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, swelling in your legs or a significant weight gain of approximately £5 per day. Wow. So as we wrap up here summarized the concern that patients should keep an eye on key points evaluate before, during and after the presence of cardiovascular risk factors. The optimization of cardiovascular disease. And then the preventing monitoring and screening for overall heart function. Dr. Warner Again Thank you for your time. Thanks for having me you've been listening to General Kelly. And after Cynthia Warner, our next guest right after this song, Come on. Hey,.

President elect Joe Biden Call's latest US jobs report grim the economy, adding 245,000 jobs in November, far below expectations by then issued a statement And said the U. S remains in the midst of some of the worst one of the worst economic and a job crises in modern history. Former President Barack Obama will campaign for the two Democrats running in a state run off elections in Georgia. Today, Obama will deliver a virtual address on behalf of John Asaf and Raphael Warnock. President Trump will campaign for the two Republican senators in Georgia tomorrow night. No more news time 10 16, and it appears the country is slipping deeper into a corona virus crisis. The U. S recorded more than 3100 deaths from the virus. On one day this week. That's more than the number of people killed on 9 11. It shatters the old record set in April, The number of Americans in the hospital with the coronavirus shattered a record, too. More than 100,000. The figure is more than doubled over the past month, and new cases per day are now topping 200,000. Health experts warn. The worst may be yet to come, in part because of the delayed effects from Thanksgiving when millions of Americans disregarded warnings to stay home. "A couple of days to get shots. The drive thru model has seen T work pretty well for testing. Some say that could work well for vaccines. But with winter weather coming is that something that you think will pan out What states are doing now is they're trying to figure out short term like immediately. How they will do it when they just get you know, maybe tens of millions of doses as the manufacturing capacity ramps up and more doses are available. Then they can vaccinate more people. So in Maine, they're thinking about using Right through sites like car washes, and why our car wash is interesting because that's gotta entrance and exit and the person standing in the middle vaccinating. Can stand there just wearing their personal protective gear because car washes are heated, so they're protected from the snow in the cold so you could drive through. Roll down your window. Stick out your arm get a jab. You drive off and the vaccinators is not out in the freezing weather. That's something for later on when it becomes a little bit more widespread. Pharmacies are also going to be involved in getting the vaccines and the modern. A vaccine on Lee has to be kept at minus 20, which is the same temperature for lots of other medications. So as we move closer into next year middle of next year, more people will get vaccines. They'll be more widely available, and that's where the idea is for pharmacies and doctors offices to be able to give this more readily. Washington Post comments. Lena son. And that's cool. Most Tom Cutler, the World Health Organization is asking for more research and information on why drugmaker AstraZeneca's Corona virus vaccine has such widely different efficacy rates. Vaccine produced with the help of Oxford University reported that it was about 70% 70% effective overall. However, it said it was 90% effective when people were given a half dose first and then a full dose with second shot. One of the issues is that no one over the age of 55 Was in that group. And I'm not privy to the details of AstraZeneca and Oxford University's tests, But I can tell you if you have any older relatives in your family, you know that the senior flu shot is stronger than the ones the rest of us get. So that same idea might and again, I say might Be playing into it. There. It's.

"I'm Tom Cutler. And Here are some of the top stories this hour. U. S. Health officials are redefining what it means to have close contact. Close contact with some of them with covert 19 for months, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said close contact meant spending a solid 15 minutes within 6 ft. Of someone who tested positive today they change it to a total of 15 minutes or more so briefer but repeated contacts, adding up to 15 minutes now count Hospitals around the U. S. Starting to buckle from a resurgence of covert 19 cases, several states setting records for the number of people hospitalized and leaders of scrambling to find extra beds and staff. New highs in cases have been reported in states big and small from Idaho to Ohio this week, the Centers for Disease Control said nearly 300,000 more people died in the U. S this year compared To a typical year, almost a quarter million covert related deaths that are largely but not completely responsible for that rise. Reporting on this in the Washington Post, Lay Bernstein, who joins me on the common whose line Lenny Thanks for being with us, it's only October. How much higher could that 300,000 number go by the end of the year? Well, one prediction we got yesterday in doing the story was that there could be another 100,000. What were called what they call excess deaths. These are Beyond that you would expect in a typical year. They're both from Cove it and from other causes. Okay now. There's a gap in some of the numbers here. 300,000 excess deaths, according to the CDC. Only 221 on ly 221,000 covert deaths, which is a terrible number, according to Johns Hopkins. What what else seems to be resulting in these other Roughly 80,000 deaths, right? Actually, their data was on ly through early October, sold about 200,000 Cove, it and another 100,000 from other causes and the other causes as you'll remember, sort of during the times of the epidemic. Of the pandemic. A lot of people who needed hospital care for chest pain or strokes for diabetic emergencies. They were staying home because they were terrified of going to the hospital. So what these statistical models suggest, is that Nearly 100,000 of them may have died more than would have died in a typical year because they were not getting that care in your report. Lenny. You highlight the surprise finding about the excess death rate for a typically healthy age range. What's going on with our 25 44 year olds? You know, everybody would love to know that is not something that you see very often 25 to 44 year olds are generally healthy there in the prime of life. Um, And yet we had a 26%. Rise in excess deaths among that group over the typical year. So of course you do have the covert death. You're 5700. But what else is happening with those folks are is there are a large number of People who didn't get care are their drug overdoses, Suicides, accidents Nobody really knows. But the numbers are alarming. How is the death rate being politicized before the election here? Well, of course the president has spent, you know his entire year trying to minimize the impact of the of the virus. You know, just Monday he was telling his campaign staff in the meeting that people are tired of the virus. They're tired of talking about it. They're tired of dealing with it. They just want to be left alone. Go back to their previous lives. The Biden campaign taking the exact opposite tactic. They're making the virus the main issue in this campaign, which is the only 13 days now from Election Day, and they are trying to pin this death rate on the president's mismanagement of the virus. So far, they've been pretty successful. You could read more of Lenny's piece in The.

"O'Neill of the editor's Desk on Tom Cutler. Technology stocks Taking a big tunnel on Wall Street today, giving back some of their spectacular game's over the last several months and dragging the rest of the market down. Then we'll have the Numbers. Updated numbers here in about four minutes. Joe Biden met today with the family of Jacob Blake as the Democratic presidential nominee began a day of events in Wisconsin, the battleground state finding itself at the center of a national reckoning on racism, police violence and protests after a white Kenosha police officer shot Blake, a black man in the back. President Trump says people who vote early by mail should show about polling places to vote again if their ballots haven't been counted. A slight walked back from his comments a day earlier when he suggested people vote twice twice to test the mail in system. Nobody's time. 10 47 warehouse workers around the country are bracing for a holiday shopping rush like none other and, yes, the Corona virus pandemic is a big part of why retail reporter Abba Bada rise, taking a closer look for the Washington Post and joins us now with Cuomo news line, but it's been quite a year so far for these workers it has, you know, they were just coming off of last year's holiday rush when there was when the pandemic hit and all of a sudden they were having to work around the clock. Often six or seven days a week to fulfill this surgeon online orders of people stayed home and try to buy everything they could online. Obviously, the pandemic has driven more and more of us to do our shopping online, which only adds to the pressure on those workers will be filling all of those holiday orders. Absolutely. A lot of the workers say they're working longer hours whenever they're having to fulfill product at a higher rate, but at the same time Cos they're trying to take measures to protect him against the code of Iris. So that means social distancing, maybe doing away with certain shifts and staggering other Requiring more frequent hand washing into all of that complicates the picture and makes it much harder to do just a regular job. Even with those protections, working conditions have been challenging, haven't they have? You know we don't have a sort of overall number of the number of where health workers who have gotten sick or died, But we know that there are hundreds at least 182 left tested positive and one Amazon warehouse alone. And so it is a growing problem and given sort of the tight quarters that people work in the work in and the long hours that they're working, there's a real potential for the virus to spread quickly. Now, A lot of these workers will tell us they can use all of the help they can get. Could we see some of these companies hire some temporary workers, as we typically see during the holiday season? Absolutely. The number of warehouse workers typically doubles or triples during the holidays and the sense I get from retailers and analysts that that's going to be even more pronounced this year. We haven't seen a lot of hiring enough to go out. But they're just around the corner. Now. What does all this mean for consumers? What should we be thinking is we're placing all of these orders. You know, That's a great question. And I know this is something that a lot of consumers they're starting to think about. You know? What does it mean? When I hit submit on my shopping cart, like how many workers air having to Go to great lengths to get that order to my doorstep. I think we're seeing a real movement and in certain pockets of people thinking, Hey, maybe I should think twice before I order You know of that extra pair of yoga pants that I maybe just don't absolutely need right now. They was slowly going up and the doctor said, you know, it's kind of your choice. You Khun, you, Khun! Write it out. It might not ever get to the point when we consider it. To be a concern, or you could be proactive and you conduce radiation therapy, and I just I didn't want it. I didn't want to take a chance because I'm still very active. I'm healthy. I wanted to be very, very proactive and make a good choice. And so I decided to get proton therapy. Get my get my radiation treatments done, And it just happened to coincide with when the covert started there in Seattle, so that put it off a little bit, But I was able to complete it and Things went really, really well. I had it done in a sec, a proton therapy centre there in shell and they were great and things were really well had no side effects, which was wonderful because I had a couple of friends that It had gone through that had done that conventional radiation and they were both pretty miserable with the side effect. So I'm just so fortunate. Lucky that I got through that without decided. Well, you're a walking billboard for testing and screening. What advice do you have to give? Well, I mean, even even with all the stuff going on right now, especially if you have a history of prostate cancer in your family. You need to make sure that you get your they're screening. Get your say done. Go to your doctor's. If a man's 50 years old, he definitely needs to get Get a good screaming and get us down and you know you can't hide it. We looked at a number of different factors, including Cleaning procedures, how they've handed handle changes and cancellations, two tickets as well as the experience, actually flying both on the ground and on board. Now, as we look over the results, Delta Airlines finished at the top and Seattle based Alaska Airlines not far behind. Yeah, that's right. The two of them first and foremost have done ah, pretty decent job rewarding their loyal elite flyers. Delta was the first major airline to extend elite status. Alaska was shortly behind. Alaska, though, has also launched a number of really interesting promotions to try to encourage future bookings and get people onto their planes moving into the end of 2020 and 2021. The other big thing is both of those airlines continue to restrict capacity on their flights on that's not something that you see across the 10 airlines that we looked at me. On the other end of the list. We find lower cost carriers such as frontier and Spirit. Yeah, Frontier spirit, allegiance those carriers, they haven't really imposed any capacity restriction. They also suffered big in the loyalty category. So allegiance, for example, you have to have their credit card even participate in their loyalty program. Frontier and Spirit have done minimal changes to their frequent flyer programs. And again. They're not restricting capacity on their flights, And that's something that we've seen from American and United. The reason they felt kind of the middle of the pack is they initially were restricting capacity by blocking middle seats, but they have since moved away from that over the last few weeks, so That's what really hurt those particular carriers in the ranking. And when it comes to those lower cost carriers of the lower prices don't really appear, though, to be stopping people from taking a flight. They may not otherwise have been able to afford it. This point. Yeah, and that's what's really important. When you look at this list is to recognize that every airline has something going for it. And just because spirit happen to fall out, the bottom doesn't mean that you're going to guarantee tohave. Poor experience with them. They have very low fares. They've also done a really great job handling tickets. In fact, one of our correspondents are director of Travel Content Down in Houston area Summer Hole. She actually cancel the spirit Flight B a text message and got a refund immediately. So all these airlines are they are taking steps to really mitigate the impact of the Corona virus. On passengers because their livelihood depends upon it. They need passengers to know that they're taking this seriously when they get up in the air. That's Nick. You and you can see the study in depth that the points guy dot com That's couples. Bill O'Neill. Come on. Whose time 9 49 For what it's worth. I'm Sherry Preston.
