The Bourne Identity (2002)
"Hey everybody welcome to another prestige podcasts. Where we perhaps are stretching the definition of prestige I think so. I think this is a prestigious action film anyway. The bourne identity. This is a two thousand two movie directed by doug liman who you might recognize director of swingers. Mrs smith jumper edge of tomorrow american-made. He's the son of a bitch. Made us watch american made. We got all hyped up tom. Cruise in and mister bourne identity in its turns out that was very aggressively average flick. But but he's he's made a couple of good action movies as you can see here. After this paul greengrass over and helmed the rest of the borne trilogy is based on a screenplay written by tony gilroy who you might recognize as the screenwriter of rogue. One devil's advocate. Literally every jason bourne film also wrote and directed michael clayton and william blake. Herron who. I don't even know why his credit for this like only got one other movie credits he's credit created as the co writer. So i guess he did stuff here. He came into some rewrites. Because a studio like lots of this is a. I had no idea. This is such a troubled film making process. They're much butting heads. We'll we'll get to that. I'm sure is based on the bourne identity by one robert ludlum. If you're a. Tom clancy fan. You know. absolute thought robert ludlum is if you're a kid growing up in eighties. Ninety nineties like books The airport bookstores were stuffed full of his political thrillers. Back for their stuff. Full john grisham or after adding it. Yeah it's like. It's like john grisham. Tom clancy and and Ludlum all going for that hyper. Masculine market stars matt damon of course as jason bourne Frank potenza bra who you might recognize from run. Lola run is awesome. Best thing about season to the bridge. Also clio and sneaky little star guest starring role here. Chris cooper brian cox who you'll recognize as the bad political heavy from every political thriller. We've ever seen giant assholes. Good job at it. Julia stiles clive owen. Art talked by clive. Owen and walton goggin. Yeah back before. I knew who he was and he was like in his late. Twenties early thirties still had a fairly full head of hair though. It was in recognizable retreat. Just pops out the do one of the most textbook gap dossier exposition scenes. That you've ever

"The worst is awful. He's totally the villain. But if you're saying this film is not particularly clever. Then euro- saying it's clever enough to do that. No that's the laziest excuse in the book. Red herring you constantly beat the audience over the head that it's a red herring. Okay folks and this is why on idiots with the puck us. But i didn't see it coming not necessarily people maybe agreeing with you right now. We don't know. I mean i. By the time they have gone to cover weather. Extracting the guy from syria. Syria right okay. i'm with. They're extracting the guy. I kind of thought okay. Jamie bell was coming onside bit in the beginning. I thought he was one of the big bats. He's quite interesting character and by the end. We'll get to setups and other things at the end of the film to the end of this focused That's quite Other than jamie bell. Michael b jordan. I couldn't tell you a single characters. Nine why they are in the film. Atoll well yes we should know. Jody turner smith shows up in. This movie I think she has second billing in the movie and she was in the movie queen and slim she someone who's very much emerging talent Boy I really struggled for things to say about her character. It feels kind of the character. Who's in the office to kind of get the information to give to the audience about what's going on with the situation. A lot of time probably would have paid off in a sequel. I guess this this character. More so But jamie bell. Jimmy bell is just one of those actors you put him in any kind of character role and he's going to bring something to it. He's playing a cia guy he is. Our connection for spy hurts so You know we stanford jamie bell at least in regards to this film and he brings personality to it like he's actually got some kind of a sleazy vibe to him. I liked seeing what he would do. Seem to seem like he felt like or as the actors. Were playing this stuff very straight. I felt like he was at least approach. It from a character actor. Point of view of. I'm going to do something kind of weird. Yeah absolutely and his performances will stand out scenes. he is in. I mean with jodi tuna smith character. I feel bad for the the actor nonsense. Because i'm not sure it was with the fullness i think it was the character on the page has nothing to really do. I mean they've they've created. The character is in the books. But please let me know from wrong guys. And she's the first. Us female navy seal. They've actually happened in reality. Yeah as kind of a big thing and yet she's reserved to..

You're excited about the very excited about this as a as the gaming community i'll be there spokesman for the moment It's exciting stuff. Machine games known for their work on the wolfenstein Recent games those are excellent. first person shooters. This doesn't indicate whether that indiana jones game would be first person or not but back to the open world star wars stuff. There's been a little bit of stagnation with star wars licensed stuff since disney got a hold of all the licenses they stop their own internal studios disney's interactive went away And they moved everything to a or they may deals with the a for most of their exclusive licensing to star wars games that a couple hits in there a couple of big bombs some very controversial stuff with battlefront and microtransactions. And and that sort of thing Was at the forefront of that mess. So it's been kind of an ugly period or than just period and what it sounds like. Now they're they're basically saying all right. Look we've got we've got the lucas games. Banner back it's here and that is a lot of cachet a lot of history behind it Even outside of star wars related stuff. And we've got to be soft. Who makes really great. Maybe some of the industry's best open world games. They're open world style is very well known and respected And the division to not not that kind of open world game There's real prowess to that. And i think that that's the right team And given that when all the other resources they will be soft they should be able to make a really killer open world game. Which is my favorite kind of game. So i'm beyond excited about an open world star wars game made by a big city like this and it's nice to see him spread it around a little bit. Not be so exclusive exclusively. Ea

It's called one true Patriots. Not on Lee. Are you running for office? In your spare time? He wrote a book. Yeah. Thankfully, I finished before I finished that turned him before. All this craziness happened. Tell us is the story of your book. Yes, The one true Patriot is the third installment of a sort of Tom Clancy. Brad, your political spy thriller you know, and I've been writing those and after my first book came out outlawed tunes nonfiction. I've been writing these Tom Clancy esque thrillers ever since. And this is third one, and you know, Erik steals. He's a he's an Alfa program operative is essentially a spy. And he's up against the female assassin in this book that is just taking the fight to his friends and his family in a way that he's never experienced before and steals left, picking up the pieces. Support for this podcast and the following message. Come from Deloitte, a global leader in digital transformation, helping clients apply technologies like cloud and AI to their unique business challenges. Deloitte, Kat com slash look. Again. As reported in the ever escalating US trade war with China. The White House has threatened to introduce twenty five percent tariffs on two hundred million dollars of Chinese goods. So how does that impact big tech? Let's us one of the US's, most valuable tech companies as an example, apple and more importantly, your apple products barons, Alexandra Skaggs has more Apple's earnings per share could be hurt fifteen to twenty percent by higher tariffs. If that happens, the smartphone maker may have to raise its prices or just accept lower profitability. China is a large part of apple supply chain and facts that estimates apple gets almost twenty percent of its revenues from there. So apple investors are probably hoping that the US and China reach a trade deal over the summer. In addition to tacking on the already announced five hundred billion in terrorists that could raise prices on almost half of everything. The US buys from China, president Xi Jinping said he would. And then we got watchdogs in two thousand sixteen. So it feels like, and we watch Ben the Saint they're gonna combine to know people are saying that which I fucking bayton. Ghost recon is all bullshit. Oh, a hacked watch. Just put out a piece of deal sea story DLC that has Shane from the Walking Dead and the punisher what I can never remember his name sorry in it. "Yes, so forget -able but they were talking about that and how it was gonna, have crossovers with other movies and that kind of didn't come to be really fleshed out world. Yeah. And one of the things was when Kevin Costner who appeared in Jack Ryan shadow recruit that move, you're just talking about he. He plays like a recruiter character who recruits Chris pines, Jack Ryan, that when he was still in talks to come on board, that project paramount was thinking about making multiple movies, and one of them is without remorse, which is the movie they're talking about doing now with Michael Jordan, and they were going to have Kevin Costner play the same character in both movies, sort of like a Nick fury of that Jack Ryan verse, if you will, and they were actually looking at Tom hardy to star as John Clark at that point. And then Akiva Goldsman more recently was looking at Ryan Reynolds to star, but now Michael Jordan has taken that part. So it's a, it's a big part, and I'm glad to see him headline another major franchise aside from creed. So. It'll be interesting to see what they do. And you know, as Chris mentioned before, like it's all sort of about the filmmakers here. So I'm very fascinated to see who they get to write and direct this Christina. You read a lot of stuff. Have you read any of the Tom Clancy books? Are you excited? But I, I'm sure I'm going to spend a lot of people, but Tom Clancy is for like grandfathers, so I'm sure it's a grandfather somewhere. We'll be very excited about this, but. I, I mean, I love Michael Jordan. So who knows? Maybe this will turn out really cool, but I feel like Tom Clancy's books are very least early books, very analytical. They're not really action stories. They've just been turned into that by Hollywood. So it'll be interesting to see how that turns out. Okay. That brings us to the end of today's podcast. By before we get to the credits as you will. I do wanna plug a couple of features that I have up on the site today. A couple of months back. I visited Walt Disney animation studios, and I saw some early footage from the wreck it Ralph c, the sequel, Ralph breaks the internet and cuts talk to all the people involved with that from the directors to the writers, the animators and I have two articles on the site right now that I spent a lot of time on and would love for you to read in their done in a style that I think is not typical from us or even other movie websites. It's done kind of like in a store as a story. So one of the articles how to how the Hawaii. Rothe breaks. The internet. Disney Princess seem came to be the kind of tells the story of how this writer who. You gotta go read the story, but it's basically how that basically the, the scene that everybody's talking about came to actually be in the movie in in also the fear that Disney was going to, you know, shut it down to say no, and not want them making fun of the brand. And you know, kind of making a mockery of that in the other piece that I have on the site is how about the movie, you know, this movie is from the filmmakers that made utopia, and I think people just expect us to be kind of like a fun romp, but actually the reason for making Ralph breaks, the internet kind of stems in the core of like unwind, bullying, and some some other kind of a serious topics and Disney's actually going to kind of tackle those head on in in this movie in a bit kind of maybe not to the extent of what Tokyo stack Ling. But you know, like you don't usually expect that kind of stuff from from animated movies and I, it kind of. Tells you how how, and why the sequel came about how Zootopia put it on the sidelines in in in a lot more about highly recommend, checking, both those articles out. You can read them national Mecom and I'll put winks in.

"It didn't say no one's watching because people were watching because it's a big franchise that they're making lots and lots of stuff of I'm talking about the Walking Dead heaven. They're going to be making more movies and more spinoffs in development. AMC Chris tell us about it. AMC is so committed to the Walking Dead that they have plans to keep it going in some form for at least ten years, which. Good luck with that. So what what what's going on here is Walking Dead is still popular, but its ratings have dropped off a little bit and instead of assuming that to sign that no one wants the Walking Dead anymore. ANC is assuming they just don't want the main show anymore. So what they're planning is they're going to make a bunch of made for TV movies that will serve as sort of like the launch pad for several new spin off shows about different characters. So. That that's the planet. I mean, none of this is set in stone yet, but that seems to be the plan like, all right, no one really cares about the main show anymore. Let's create different shows in this universe. Maybe people will care about them, Chris, what would it take from any of these movies or shows to get you to want to watch them? Oh, God, I don't. I don't think anything. I just I don't care. I can't imagine like maybe even had like the most amazing cast ever, but I fear that looking dead at like Kim dickens on it while and I love Kim dickens. She's a great actress, but I never felt the need to watch it. So I really don't know. I feel like for me, it would have to be like a filmmaker. If the I love like David fincher, who was he was attached the World War z. to at some point. So he must have some kind of interest in zombies a metro. If you'd wanna go to. Premium cable or cable TV put. I think something like that could give me interested, Brad Ben is what could get you interest possibly interested in the Walking Dead. I, it was a crossover withdrawn of the dead. I was actually going to say the same thing that you were Peter. Like if it could be a turning into like an anthology series and get a singular autour to come in and do a one and done season where I wouldn't have to pay attention to any of the other Walking Dead franchise. And I could just watch that one season and be satisfied with that arc, I, I would have no problem tuning into something like that, but it just doesn't seem like the direction they're going. Yeah, not at all. Let's move tariff last and final story in that is the Michael Jordan has been cast in a Tom Clancy movie adaptation than those. But yes. So Michael Jordan who recently started in Black Panther, he's got creed to coming up, has scored a lead role in to Tom Clancy adaptations. Actually, he's going to play the character of John Clark, which is going to be the main characters in Tom Clancy's spy novels in at least two movies. So I up, he's going to be an adaptation of a book called without remorse, which is sort of an origin story for how John. Clark, aka John. Kelly became an ex navy seal and he turned into a CIA operative. And then that is going to be followed up by a rainbow six movie which Hollywood has been trying to make for a long time. And the character of John Clark is sort of like a supporting character in the quote, unquote, Jack Ryan verse. Jack Ryan, of course, is being played by John Krasinski on Amazon right now, but that's a TV shows apparently separate from that. This is going to be a new film series Akiva Goldsman is producing. So that's kind of a bummer. Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nimick are also producing, but Michael Jordan is producing as well. So that's that's good news. There's no writer or director attached to these films yet, but I really hope that Akiva Goldman doesn't put too much of his fingerprint on it. His track record is very spotty. As we've talked about previously. But yeah, the this is kind of interesting because the second time that they're trying to launch a Tom Clancy cinematic universe. I remember being on the set of Jack Ryan, the what does that Chris pine? Was that threat?.
Jordan Peele is set to host Twilight Zone reboot
"Let's move onto the twilight zone you. We know that Jordan Peele is rebooting the series, and we have even speculated on this podcast. If you're peel would take over the rod sterling role as host, and now we have the answer to that, Chris. Tell us about it. Yeah. So a few months ago, actually someone in an interview s Jordan Peele if he would be doing, you know, not just developing the the twilight zone rebate, but also hosting it the way rod sterling do. And he said he was resistant to the idea, but he hadn't ruled it out. But now it's officially is taking over as the host of the show, not just the guy developing the show, but also the host. If people out there have somehow never managed to see the twilight zone. Every episode of the original series used to start with rod. Sterling, the crater. Walking onto the screen and basically giving a brief synopsis of what was going to happen. And it was always amusing because he would. He would literally just walk into a scene and no one would notice he was there. He was like this invisible man that only audience could see and now Jordan Peele is going to be doing that too. As he takes over the show, which is which is kind of cool in alpha. Think this is a smart from filmmakers perspective. I feel like like we've seen less of this in this day and age in back in the day, you know, you had Alfred Hitchcock host, Hitchcock percents, and you'd have, you know, even Steven Spielberg would come out and like introduced like a, you know, things promoting his movies. I feel like we see less of filmmakers being the front of their productions. And I, I feel like we're losing kind of the iconic directors. You know, we'll have the George Lucas of today. I think because of that. So you know, it'll be fun to see Jordan Peele who obviously has you know a place on the screen. As well as behind the camera who's this show,

"He was in love with the Russian people, and one of the things that makes early Clancy stuff. So good is that he's clearly read like every great Russian novel ever. He loves Russian culture. He loves the Russian people, and he really spend a lot of time trying to get the the fleshed out soul of the Russian characters in his in his book in. So the the bad guys are not sketched out cardboard cutouts. I mean, they are really, and they're plenty of Russians who are legit, good guys who just like stuck where they're stuck and it's it's so good. Go Ricardo. Are you? You've never read karnal. You would love it. Sign, never read any. I've read zero, Tom Clancy books. Would you read? I've read so that you haven't by the way who's a huge fan of karnal Kremlin Aaron. McLane, huge. He was in it by the way. He's actually. Jack Ryan. Okay. You know what you all left out by the way you left out net force, Tom Clancy's net force, and I think that was short-lived, TV series, tech war. Yeah. He was a head of his time because it was all about the cyber. He knew that cyberterrorism would be a big deal and all I could think of as what they could have used that I could've used a virtual private network. This is the it's so nice to have to sponsors legit really love on the same day express VPN. This is again, I'm just gonna go off script because I love it. So express VPN is the other service that I have both of these apps both com and express VPN on my phone right now. So if you ever use public wireless networks, you are crazy because when you're in a public wireless network, if you're McDonald's or Starbucks at the library or wherever you are susceptible to anybody else on the public network, anybody who's fist gated militias can break into your computer, which is why you should be using virtual private network. It's it's a sensually a little safety device. That keeps you am is and in totally safe and impervious from hackers. When you're on public networks. You anybody can set up a VPN on their own, but it's a pain in the ass and instead of trying to do it, you should just go to express VPN dot com and pay them because it's not that expe- it's really cheap, and it's really easy in this is like buying the cheapest insurance you could possibly buy. This is one of the things where they have solved the entire VPN problem for you. It took me. I mean, no kidding about eight seconds to install the express VPN app. It took. I click three different buttons. It's just done and then you never have to worry about it. Whenever you want to activate and turn on a little power button on your browser that you can click and it just bam. Your VPN network is active. He doesn't slow you down it. It's really good. You shouldn't be on public wifi without it. They also have all sorts of benefits about how we protect your privacy at home. I guess if you care about whether or not your SP knows where you're going to Vic, that could be useful to you. Because you're looking at anemia. Callback you like that. So all this Xpress Sweeping is really good use it. You can. I think you can get up to five devices

"There's a stump that is the military porn, and there's the stuff that is spy porn, and I've read the greatest of the military porn, but the best of all them, the number one karnal the Kremlin, which is his masterwork and is pure spy cloak and dagger stuff. It's a little slow for you. Okay, you would you remember rich dome rising? There's a lot of seeds in the run into that Jack Ryan Booker karnal Kremlin. He's in it in that he's a character who exists takes place entirely in Moscow and Jack Ryan is a guy back in Washington who's an animal. They never turned that into a movie. No, he's probably to slow. This is much more. It's a really a hard hard core spy, John Lee Carre like dead drops and everything. I mean, I, it's so good. I remember at the time Russia house came out with Sean Connery thinking that I figured they would also cardinal the Kremlin, but can I just interject briefly, yes. As you mentioned locker, I recently read the Karla trilogy and what they're they're all very well written and in I think the the honorable schoolboy is that was that. Is probably the best of them in could make actually a pretty decent like two and a half hour movie in a way that the other two I don't think could even though it's the longest just pare down a bit. But the the problem with the, the problem with all of these books is that they, they, they revolve entirely around spies trying to get other spies for no other reason than they're trying to get the spies, right. They're like, they're all about trying to get assets without any actual. Plot or not. I mean, not plot, but like any scheme. There's they're not trying to defuse. There's no bomb to defuse the just just like we need to get this guy. And that's the case of all of them were just these Carlos Trillo is that's that's the those three books in it's, it's like, I found it vaguely frustrating like. Love like, okay, I know it's heresy among people who love spice stuff. Karnal Kremlin is, is the story of the highest placed US by in the who is actually like on the politburo and he's on the verge of being compromised. Finally, and this CIA drift by Bob Ritter who is the Henry Cerny character who's the bad guy when, but but of course, in the books, he's not a bad guy. He's he's a very honorable ops guy, and he decided that they're gonna pull him out. They don't need to pull him out. There's an, there's another side of the CIA agents like, hey, look, we, we've done what we could for this guy. You know, this is what happens. And Ritter says, no, we gotta. We gotta get him out. So it's the story of how they tried to extract their their biggest asset. Tasked question. You mentioned the third category of Tom Clancy books. What was it called? You had just trash. Okay. Like like, what? Like rainbow six. All the rainbow six executive orders. Executive orders is basically Jack Ryan in the. Balanced. I'm sorry, becomes president. Is this the one where the ones based on the video game aren't very good. Is that what you're telling me is that the video games based on them, but nibble once he becomes president, the books are on ranch style full of speechifying about it is as if our friends at media matters were writing a parody of what conservatives doing fiction when right, right, right, right. And Jack Ryan said, well, we have this amendment. It's right there in the constitution and the number two whole, perhaps you've heard of it because we have to be able to protect. It is. Why do you hate guns bad? Are you saying it's really in, but here's the one final thing there's only because then great. This is perfect. He almost certainly would have been Trumpian. Clancey despite the fact that the Trump ISM stuff is all totally countered his actual ideological beliefs. Foreign policy was foreign policy wise, tax wise size of government. Live wise Senator that I don't wanna get what I mean say though that for guy who was very, very conservative was Trumpian..

"It just it wasn't working. It also the problem for me is prior to watching this show. Kate. I had just finished watching the night manager also an Amazon and I said before and I'll say it again. I highly recommend it every good. Oh, you've seen it? Yeah. Yeah, it's on Lori. He will always. He's even what he's evil. He still so likable, he's still likable. So here's a question for you is this gets to mind the idea about the why do you have to slap this layer VIP on top of it? There's always a creative decision, whether you're going to do it at your own thing, or if you lean on something else. And for this, I would show Sherlock Holmes like Scholl comes in existing character. They are to truly great adaptations of Sherlock Holmes over on t- on television over the last decade. One is Sherlock the Benedict Cumberbatch and the others house starring Hugh Laurie houses is not like a, oh, they're parallels. He is sure lock the whole thing about Dr Watson though. I mean, he knows I kick per se, does he in the house? He's his, his his, his side kick is the other dock whose name is woman. Now. Bene- bland, looking guy. Right? He lives on Leonard Robert Sean, Leonard, he he lives in two twenty. One b vets street address in Princeton, like this is he is. He has the Baker street boys where his little kids that he sends off on missions and stuff. This is, but they didn't feel the need to say, this is sure lock homes because they were happy to create their own thing. And what goes into the decision by a place like Amazon that says, we've got a slap, Tom Clancy's, Jack Ryan. On top of this thing said, just create. They've got a story, they wanna tell. So why not? Just tell the story? Did they have a story? They wanted to tell, I assume they worked backwards from this. They're like, okay, what's popular? Jack Ryan is popular. Tom Clancy is popular. Let's do something in that vein. I mean, they've been looking. They've been very explicit about this that they've been looking for a game of thrones type show to to make Amazon a month's must subscribe, must watch they've channel and they've and they're trying to look. They bought Lazarus. I think Greg, I've been. Beating this drum for two knows what they will win when eventually shows up on Amazon two year, they'll be tire country becomes obsessed with it. Nobody knows that that is, but they. But this is why they bought the Lord of the rings, the rights to Lord of the rings in there. That's why they're bringing Peter Jackson back to mind that you know ground. This is like saying, you know, in nineteen sixty, we gotta find another odd couple. The couple's giant hit. Make us another odd couple like this. So anyway, I assume they started with Jack Ryan. We're like, okay, how can we make this relevant to today's audiences? Almost certainly trill, which is unfortunate because it's not very good, almost certainly true, shall we rank the Tom Clancy books. I've only read one. I've read none. Let me know. Let me guess. I was in highschool red storm rise, yes, fantasized about that being a movie. But I two things I thought is Russia invades. Oh my gosh. It's so and there was a computer game for the apple two e. which was extremely primitive at the time because they never had as many games as PC's did, but it was called something like theater Europe, and you can either take NATO side or Warsaw Pact and. Sorry. Getting into it again, but, but it was along those lines. And so reading that book. I mean, I devoured that book and but my two thoughts, one, it's sprawling. There's not a real. I mean, there is character, and the other thing was this was pre-siege I said, how are they going to film these giant scenes that you could easily do now? I, I really, I have re read time because I know you. I reread the entire Tom Clancy series in the last seven years, and so they're all reasonably freshman. Red storm rising is even better than you. If you if you dip back into it as be treat. At some point, it is not the case that you'd be embarrassed. When I was fourteen it, it is really holds up. So so Tom Clancy books fall into three categories. There is the stuff that just the trash..

I like Sean bean, though danger is a perfect movie patriot games as very good move and and good movie. Number four. Sum of all fears. I am not a fan of Ben Affleck oftentimes as an actor, let alone as that above shadow recruit, see, shadow recruit, so that. And the number five is the CBS series. Jack Ryan, Tom Clancy's, Jacqueline, man. You really digging chip in there. I like John Krasinski and I want him to succeed. Emily, let's just make which he directed, which he owns a piece. My guess is he took this gig before. He knew these walkway with a hundred million dollars from quiet place, right walkway without alone, quiet place to. The. Yeah, I hunt for Red October. It's fascinating to look at John McCain in from like nineteen eighty seven to nineteen ninety or so where he has his apex, where he has predator diehard and hunt for Red October, just one right after the other, which are three, you know four star movies. And then I mean, I know he had. I mean, he he gets a lot of crap for last action hero at the time which was great. Moving the time, last action hero movie, and that is totally out of its time in in twenty years. People will let you know it's really, really good is the Thomas crown affair remake fantastic. Rene Russo. Glenn complain about some something says, I said that the Jack Ryan expanded universe of the books is very rich source material if you feel the need to delve night, but what this does, which which Clancy is very cognizant of throughout his books. His undersea really at her Shans bureaucracy entertained a lot of things entertains the bureaucracy CIA in the division between ops and intelligence, right? And in that there is a wall between the two of them and the d. c. o. always at war with the d. c. I and the rural, the director CIA's basically to play the two off of one another in the books all get to that. And that is very a very rich vein for this world that we live in now for if you're not gonna do it as a period piece, which by the way they could have done it as a period piece and would have been great if they just Jack, and then you would have everyone approp- age appropriate for what's happening, including Admiral Greer, the whole thing that's it would have been fantastic and but if you're not gonna do that, then at least use the bureaucracy. Instead, he just sketches. Timothy Hutton is here. And he's a bad. He's a bad bureaucrat. You don't even know where he sits within the organization? No, not at all. I mean, just like they're just bag on, you know, he's bad because this Yale and Groton, this is the guy who calls Jonathan calls. I was gonna say, Jim, Ryan calls Jack Ryan up to the to his office and his like, hey, why don't you tell me a little bit about yourself? Thank you for your service. For your backpack. Just everything in this is so paint by it's very, it is very number Salim on who is Salim on, you know, it's the Greer thing. Chafes me like you not. Bundle Pierce I love at was not his fault. It's written the way it's written high love Admiral Greer, who's James will Jones in the movies. It's been books. He is. This is just a sage. He is a master spy who you know who secrets have secrets as as Tony stark would say. And you know everything. He's an, he's an intelligence guy, not an ops guy, and he's always thinking like he's basically Nick fury. He's always thinking five steps ahead of everybody else. And now he's just a guy who look you go with your gut, your gutters. All you've got right extent instance. The writing is he's a, he's a tough cop plays by his own rules. I just. That's not that carrot. Would you doing and the other guy Matisse's at his name who's the other sort of spy guy out in the field?.

"In a serial format. It doesn't work. And I think the problem is we just have had too much Jack Ryan. There's just been too much Jack Ryan too much wrong JV l. I, I am a big Jack Ryan fan in the sense that I've read all of the Clancy books almost even after like the rot set in when was real. I mean before it was still Tom Clancy himself writing it, not before he signed over to the estate, sign it over to four other co-authors who are now writing it with Tom Clancy's name up half the book title yet, even though he's been dead for ten years. People forget that early. Tom Clancy is actually very, very good in and not just very good as a yarn, you know, story, but actually like really well written books. And then things get really bad after that you get four or five good books and then it starts going downhill. What book for you was like, oh, this is clearly not as good as we'll get to the ranking. We'll get to the ranking, Vic, Greg, I'm doing a movie ranking. I forgot that there's any books connected to this book. The central problem though is that Jack Ryan is a Cold War figure, and they never figured out how to adapt him to the post Cold War world. I would suggest that a better fit for our world is not the character of Jack Ryan, but the Jack Ryan expanded universe because within the books, jank Ryan is one central figure, but there are whole books where he is only way out on the periphery like they talk about him once or twice, maybe shows up. I am rabbit. Red rabbit is like that. He's nowhere and red storm rising the, he's cardinal the Kremlin. He again is very distant figure, and you have all these other Mary, Pat and and fully who are fantastic. You have Bob Ritter who's fantastic. The judge Greer who is the Leia character that Clark because he's my favorite. I would watch Lee Schreiber. Jack Ryan is a whole. So this is one of the things I wondered is why they didn't do a Mr Clark instead of. So because this this whole thing. So this is barely Jack Ryan. I mean, they have abstracted the character to such a degree that it is barely recognizable as him. And if he wasn't named Jack Ryan and Admiral Greer who's no longer an Admiral in this, he's got a bad back is now a, you know, he's now a belligerent d. bag who just curses everybody and his divorced and is a Muslim. This is the equivalent of Jim. Jim Gordon has a beer and cheats on his wife like that for. Of the reinvention of the annual Grier character. Why bother me? Why not just st- create a new thing. You don't have to slap an existing IP brand on top, and if you do need to do that, then you're gonna make it not a spy movie, but lately, like an action, you wanna you don't wanna go pure homeland. You want more action than homeland has then just use Mr Clarke. Mr Clark gives you the best of both John Clark and there's in fact a whole lots of source material to draw from and also had argued, John Clark fits better in the post nine eleven world than again. You really need the Soviets and Russia and the Cold War to make proper use of Jack Ryan. Now I would. I'm gonna disagree with this because the best Jack Ryan movie now in forever will be clear, present danger, no hunt for Red October, which I reached recently because it's on Amazon prime now streaming for free. Raise, Lord, b.'s, throw this out there. Dated. That's just wrong. It it everything. It's it's a very well constructed film. The this scenes with crews are all great. It just is it's just the the action scenes are they look like old, bad action scenes, and there's a very disconcerting thing that goes on in the last five minutes or so of the film where Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery you're talking in front of what is clearly a green screen that's not good for like just for like, and I was, I was watching it..

And when you growing up, I think a lot of Filipino kids tend to adopt the habits and language of some of them might. A lot of them don't want to be Filipino where shelling piano or become filthy, like their parents do they want to be Americans right? Because he grew up in America, but that gives you basically a few options. And I knew a lot of Filipinos who sort of you know they, they were sort of similar to Aquafina and they would adopt sort of the sort of the the attitudes and the lingo of, let's say, another minority. Let's say if it was African Americans or do they would choose to be white, you know, but you wouldn't see a Filipino being exactly like their parents were Filipino, but you would, you know that you have choices, and that's what you do. Obviously, I chose to. They assimilated into the into the culture. Yeah, yeah. So that's the thing I don't know. Is that sensitive? Is that kind of a weird thing to bring up? Yeah. We'll probably take that this with the gene review. Law review that will never be. The flip show gave me so much joy. Listen to that on the the, it makes me wonder why we bother do anything else. If we just did. If we just did gene, we'll after we would we know providing ninety percent of the entertainment value of the product without. Right. So let's talk about Tom Clancy because this is the only thing obviously we thinking about, I'm sorry, where's your transition? None two weeks off and all the sudden there's no transitions anymore. I thought I actually, I said something must be wrong with my channel changer because I thought this was on Amazon and not CBS because. Whoa, shots fired at Tom Clancy's, Jack Clancy's. Jack Ryan had the feel of a show on CBS, doesn't it? Action values. Yeah. No, really does. All right. So what, what are your thoughts? Sunny. Can we before we talk about. The new Amazon show. Can we just discuss whether or not Jack Ryan is played out character. Yes, large because I get the feeling he kind of is we're now in the fifth iteration of Jack Ryan. I feel like we end up doing these too late in the summer, and everybody's already gone to the beach. So they're beach. Reading. Time has gone and they ended up just reading whatever was in the beach house. They went to. I bet you've had that experience before. I've never been forced to to read the books and the beach house, but I always check them out. It's always, it's always I always approached when I find the stash of books always built up a sense of excitement because you pretty much what to expect. It's going to be your Tom Clancy books. Right? It's going to be or what your Danielle Steele. Why is it that everybody who owns beachfront properties into Tom Clancy? I don't strange confluence of characteristics of person. It does seem like the the type of person who owns a beach house seems to have Tom Clancy books, or is it the other way around people who go to beach houses tend to bring Tom Clancy books with them, and then leave them like if you're into kind of like like Cold War, military technology and nuclear submarines and stuff like that, you just end up with a lot of extra money in real estate investments. I don't know, but it got, you can say, well, yes, Tom Clancy books were highly popular, but why do I see more Tom Clancy. Books seemingly without actually doing like a scientific study of this. Why does it seem like there are more Tom Clancy books than say, Stephen King books or Michael Crichton books though I have to say they're carefully. I get lucky and find some some cool. Jim, like some seventies horror or the last time I went to a beach house. There happened to be some some German books. There's only German language books. I can't remember what they were off hand, but it was exciting to find something new. I'm just remembering, I think one time you told me about going to a beach house in the summer and finding a werewolf spy book. Yes, yes. Cover where wolf that was one. I think I had to take picture. I cannot remember the author or the title, but it was. I think it was a seventies or early eighties publication. Well, anyway, there's still time in the summer still time to read summer reading books. So we're here with our picks for the summer of two thousand eighteen.
