"She published a white paper from troublemaker. To change maker a harness curiosity to build resilience and innovation which not only explores the more relevant aspects of curiosity for today's organizations but how leaders can support a more curiosity focused approach within their workplace. It's also good to be the focus of our conversation as we explore. the role. curiosity plays in today's leadership. Hi shannon welcome to the leadership is cafe. Hi tom barrett. Thanks for having me shannon. I'm really looking forward to discussing with you. The role curiosity in leadership plays in terms of driving growth and innovation as in my keynote about by booklets referred vertigo. I discussed the importance of tapping into our innate sense of curiosity so we can get a better understanding of how we're really showing up. Those interactions employee's and i reminded all of us. Still have that sense of curiosity. All you have to do is to see how willing we are to binge watch a show once what's going to happen next or how we get drawn into playing a game on her smartphone and when we reach or complete a level we want to start the next one because we want to see what's in store next and what i found interesting about what you write your white paper from troublemaker. To change maker is how you point out that there's really a right type of curiosity which is when leaders tap into it. It will drive invasion and resilience. And i imagine might also help get your employees on board with your change initiative so before we delve into your model of what you call the change maker curiosity. I'm wondering if you could explain. What is the difference between this form of curiosity. What many leaders think of when they think of curiosity. Yeah we curiosity is on the one hand. It's a really easy thing to kind of defy. It doesn't require definition right. It's not a deep theoretical concept but but we are talking about in the white paper when we talk about change maker curiosity as distinct from troublemaker. Curiosity will reporting to. There is that people tend to think about curiosity as being a bit a bit like meandering childish maybe like flippant even And as opposed to something that can really be harnessed For for change an impetus for for change and something that can can give agency to to the person who is being invited to be more curious so you were just talking about sort of as an adult. Were curious when he'd been watching show. We want to see what happens next. And that's great absolutely. We've all done a lot of binge-watching shows over the last year. But what we're we're talking about change maker curiosity. We're talking about in particular the ability to get a little more vulnerable and embrace the unknown. So it's it's a stance about what is unknown. So not so. Not just oh. I'm not sure what's going to happen next. And so let's go find out but I'm not sure what's going to happen next. That's making me feel a little bit out of control is making me feel a little bit afraid And i can approach that from a perspective of fear or i can come at that with the sort of openness And and and just you know embracing that thing that's unknown and now he's going to make me more capable of learning more open to new perspectives. It's gonna make less afraid of failing and so it's gonna. It's gonna help me better. Learn better succeed so sort of a long winded answer by when we think about change maker curiosity that's the kind of that that's the kind of openness the unknown that that we're trying to have leaders and everybody in organizations who we work with sir embrace actually love that explanation because you know it reflects some of the outcomes you point out that the change mega curiosity model gives rise to where were encouraging learning an empathetic opening because a lot of times when we think about change and emboldening curiosity a lot of times we're looking at it from the perspective of driving innovation and particularly in the context of this global pandemic. We've all endured. How do we become more resilient. And how do we become more adaptive to changes. That might be outside of control so we can become more adaptive resilience. We continued to proceed in achieving the goals. We set out to achieve. And i know a lotta times when we think of curiosity. That's where we start right la times. It's like okay. So how could we use this to be more innovative more resilient but as you point out on this white paper really we gotta start right at the beginning. We're going to start with ourselves and with these things where you're saying. We got to become more introspective and create that environment for learning both within and for your employees as well. So i'd love to hear your insights on how embracing at curious mindset. Could help us not only become more introspective but encourage a true learning environment inside our workplace. Yeah absolutely well like you said it starts. It starts with yourself right because part of what you're trying to do if you're approaching others with a what we call coach like curiosity so this ability to slow down the rush to action and stay curious longer your both yourself practicing curiosity and holding the space for others to ask questions and identify challenges and so kind of learn and be curious in their own right. So it's for yourself and for others. And that's part of bit introspective intelligence aspect of that so What what we're trying to do usually with leaders but often with with folks at any level organization is to help them shift their behavior away from being more advice driven and sort of bias too quick action.

There's a lot of press me about the little visits, says he found out about this training voting this year, which is radically different than in the past. It's coming up after the break. Hey, By the way, I have some breaking news. The health commissioner in the city of Milwaukee is out. Wow that Kowalczyk he is out. She will return to Washington, D C to join the renowned health policy organization. She's some She had some national attention on her, and I guess that doesn't surprise me. I don't. That's good news, though. I mean, some people were critics of hers, but What I've noticed with city Milwaukee. Now that I've worked here for 3.5 years downtown or in radio City is that consistency is a problem with leadership here and those kinds of decisions. People leaving. Would you like part of a statement here before it is with mixed emotions that I have submitted my resignation to Mayor Tom Barrett to join the trust for America's health, a national leader and health policy As much as I love my hometown, Milwaukee. I believe that I'm limited due to factors that are out of my control. This was evident at multiple points in time through our pandemic response. She was a bit of fashion Easter, too. I'm surprised you didn't sign.

"Deeply critical of the DNC for fading Wisconsin out of its logo. The D 20 originally had the star making the hole in the D and the Wisconsin outline. Making the hole in the zero Been replaced with a silhouette of the United States. There are a number of Democrats in Wisconsin who are privately livid that the Democratic National Committee has all but removed Milwaukee and Wisconsin from the proceedings. You would have no idea that this thing is being hosted in Milwaukee. In fact, something that I noticed almost immediately. After the convention was gaveled in, of course, Tom Barrett blamed Trump because if we had taken this pandemic more, how much more seriously could we have taken at every state shut down by mid March? And oh, as I was constantly reminded when President Trump wanted states to re open, Trump has zero power to reopen states Remember? So in as much as all of this spread it spread because individual governors didn't do their jobs in the states that have the highest death count. Great hospitalization. Countin rate are almost invariably run by Democrats. But this was Joe Biden's big Night. Of course, he gives his acceptance speech tomorrow night, but last night he was formally nominated with the roll call of states. And, of course it being Joe Biden. He couldn't do it without screwing up at least a couple of times. We all these truths.
Democratic National "Unconventional" Convention is Underway: Night 1
"National convention is underway. It's a nationwide virtual event. It was supposed to take place in Milwaukee, the city's mayor, Tom Barrett, the bummer, but obviously the pandemic has forced us to put things in perspective and the perspective that unfortunately I'll have to recognize 170,000 people in this country. Have died from this pandemic again. We have to take it seriously. The theme tonight is we, the people among the speaker, Senator Bernie Sanders, Democratic governors Andrew Cuomo and Gretchen Whitmer and some Republicans, including former Ohio Governor John Kasich. Headliner is going to be former first lady Michelle Obama and all of this is leading up to the big event on Thursday night when Joe Biden will accept his party's nomination.
Biden Won't Travel to Milwaukee to Accept Democratic Nomination, Harris or Rice as Potential VP Running Mate
"Joe Biden's choice for a running mate apparently is Kamala Harris or Susan Rice. Axios says Biden is narrow the choices down to those two. He's also decided to skip the Democratic Convention. Democratic National Convention Committee announcing speakers, including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, will no longer be travelling to Milwaukee. The committee, citing health risks due to the potential spread of covert 19 former vice president Biden is instead expected to accept the party's nomination in Delaware. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. As personally disappointed as I am as professionally disappointed as I am, we can't forget the fact that we're in the middle of a pendant. "W. G. M. J. I have a couple of friends who are considering making some substantial investments in into the city of Milwaukee. And I just I hope they're looking at this stuff. And asking themselves. Do we really want to get into partnership with a city There is about ready to turn itself over to anarchy. I mean, is this Is this what we really want a couple more texts before we move on, Jeff, this police chief is one of the best we've had ever What's town barrettes Milwaukee going to do when homeowners are no longer there to pay the taxes. Because of the lawlessness. Well, that that's that's a good question. Albert will probably be retired. But still you think that being issue Jeff says Toman was spent if you thought it was difficult to get good young people who want to be police officers in the city walkie before. How do these idiots City fathers think they will attract quality people? After all, this B s And by the way, that that's a good point, But here's the other point that's out there. The police department is already down, and it's 75 to 100 people. All right, They're already down. And of course, you've got some of the folks who want to defund them. So let let's cut another couple 100. What is going to happen is you have a number of police officers experienced police officers who have had enough of this and I think if Chief Morales goes, what you're going to see is you got a lot of officers who are eligible to retire, but our sticking around they will be out the door and to answer the question from the texture. I have no idea who's going to replace them. I just I don't mean are we going to? I don't know. Bring in people from the people's Revolution Movement or whatever they call themselves are the six members of the common Council are they who want morale is gone. Are they going to start handling the calls from their constituents who talk about how their cars have been stolen or their houses have been burglarized? I mean, I'm just asking this Jeff. It's ridiculous. I agree with you 100%. All the positives in Milwaukee with development, etcetera. What do these businesses think about their investments, Toppling? We can talk and talk. But who can actually stop? This s O s someone? Anyone help? Yes. Who would be the replacement chief that the fire and police Commission wants to put into power? Good question. Good question, but you know it's going to be anybody they would put in would be a puppet that essentially would be beholden to again these protest groups and would have to commit that We're not going to have a law and order approach. Tom Barrett. Really? Where are you as your city? Figuratively speaking Burns. Really? Where are you? Let's see the texts continue. Some doctor that that that that Jeff looking to move for many reasons, including this, Jeff Morale s is a great chief. It's it's said, um Let's see. And you get the idea. I mean, I think there's almost a unanimity. That's their of Jeff. Why isn't there a scream of racism against Chief Morales? Chief morale? It is interesting Chief Morales is a second generation Mexican American with huge Chuy's, too the Milwaukee Hispanic community. You do wonder. You know where, Where is support in that community for him now we understand against some of the immigrant rights groups are upset with him because heaven forbid he wants to enforce the law. He wants to enforce the law, and he's not willing to simply say we're not going to, you know, cooperate it all with federal authorities. Jeff Okay, Here's a plus side. I live in Waukesha County, and I bet my property values just went up 10 to 15%. Well, that there There could be that because I want to tell you any sort of Any sort of economic development. Communities are fragile, all right, and there's been a lot of good economic stuff that's been going on in the city of Milwaukee. You had a lot of interesting development, but that is fragile. It is because if If you turn the city over to the forces of lawlessness if you take the position that we're going to be hostile to law enforcement, Well, okay, pretty soon. What ends up happening is people don't feel comfortable going into certain areas. Businesses don't feel comfortable and pretty soon you've got kind of this downward cycle that that's there. This is a really easy choice that's out there and the choices do you side with law and order? Do you side with a police chief, whom it might not be perfect looking? I guess we could. We could look at individual reactions and we could say Okay. You know that the officers and Sterling Brown case should there have been quicker discipline against some of them are right. I'm not gonna argue the individual merits of a particular situation. I am telling you that to micromanage Alma rallies and the way he has led the police department, especially in the last couple of years where you've had three officers who've lost their lives in the line of duty for the members of the Fire and Police Commission to decide to do that, for those six members of the Common Council, who said We've lost confidence in him well, the only reason you've lost confidence in him is because you are apparently ready to turn the city over to lawbreakers. And anarchists because you think it's good for your political career will short term. It might be good for your political career, but long term. It's not going to be very good for your community. It's this shortsighted thinking that is just absolutely amazing to me and to circle back to where we started. Where is the mayor on all this? I mean seriously. Where is Tom Barrett? Where is Tom Barrett On? Let's write defund the police that on the streets for for like a three block ranges. Where is where is the mayor? You would think that you would be getting some leadership on what is probably the most significant issue. Facing the community now, But yet you've got the mayor who again, you know he's talking about the mass coordinates, and that's all that's all well and good, But mayor, there's other stuff going on as well. All right. When we come back, it's the Pottery Barn theory. If you want a head start on what that's all about. Follow me on Twitter. It's at Jeff Wagner 6 20 I gotta link. I will explain. This is about the dumbest long-term reaction. We have had to anything that I can think of. It's not on the level of the acceptance of legal abortion or the acceptance of slavery. But those were long term policy decisions that were made. This was a short term knee jerk reaction that has created all sorts of other problems that were easily predicted. You know how I know. They were easily predicted that because I protected them. This is why it is important. What you have been proven right about something to say so these reactions we have made and again. "Is that the Democratic National Convention schedule for mid July in Milwaukee has been not cancelled but postponed until the week of August seventeenth Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett who's been of course one of the the leading driving forces behind try to get the convention to Milwaukee he's going to be addressing what this means Erekle step back at the NCO he Tom Barrett's get ready to speak but it's not he's not quite set yet well if they're allowing everyone to either this is the new normal now where we have these zoom meetings and everything so they're allowing everyone to get to the place he is currently sitting in his living room I can see him looking at his phone but he has not yet spoken yet a lot of questions about what's going to happen here Jeff it sounds like a ccording to the DNC statement from earlier today they will have the Wisconsin center district they will have hotels available they will have the Fiserv form to use but still a lot of questions and a lot of fluidity as to whether or not all of that is open we shall see well well yeah and then then of course there's there's the practical situations of what what about people's psyches I mean as as I was talking about your typically delegates pay their own way so my my guess is you have a lot of the people who are potential delegates party activists who have been caught up in again everything that's going on in the economy R. okay got it here we go here comes the mayor yeah it's a convention that was originally scheduled for July thirteenth through the sixteenth as we move to the week of August seventeenth I consider this extremely good news and I think it's a sign of how sensitive the Democratic National Committee is to that health needs not only of our of our residents but the health needs of people throughout this nation I think we all recognize that increasingly it looks more and more difficult for us to host this convention during the week of July thirteenth through the sixteenth but in my conversations that I've had with the comfort with the delegation and with that outcome convention organizers excel as well as my can conversations with chairman Tom Perez it was always clear to me that they are committed to nominating the next democratic presidential nominee here in the city market and I think that this announcement today underscores their commitment to doing that I think it's also extremely important because at a time where we are navigating the most tumultuous public health issue we have faced in our lifetime increasingly one of the most precarious economic situations we are in bed hopefully and I say this with a great deal of hope that by mid August that this will serve as a very very important shot in the arm for our local businesses so that they can X. expect to have visitors here how many visitors we don't know how many days the convention we don't know but I think what really allow this to happen again was a recognition by the Democratic National Committee and time president Joe somebody said particular it was very very important to remain committed to Wisconsin to be remain committed to Milwaukee and because they know we've got a lot of work say no that this is something it's important to us I would say this at the local level as excited as we have been we continue to be very excited about hosting this convention over the last month month and a half our city resources and I think IT resources throughout this community have been committed to dealing with the cold with nineteen crisis and become current economic crisis that it's developing in other words it's exciting is we've been about the convention it immediately got moved to the back burner but it never got taken off I never got taken off the stole and it's gonna remain on the back burner in terms of what we're doing right now in trying to address the public health crisis and deal with the economic crisis but by having this additional month of breathing room we are hoping that this will allow us then to pivot once we're moving out of these turbulent waters and use this as a very very important shot the iris I set that up to moving the community forward so again I've had conversations with German president conversations with Joe Solmonese with right elbow moderates in the host committee and I know that they've reached our device reform to this concert center district to others in the community to make sure availability it was something that we can work with and everyone we've talked to has been very very accommodating I'm very thankful for that obviously they're going to have to be somebody just listener being made along the way but this is a challenging time and I think what you saw here was a a commitment to the process of commitment to the community and a commitment to public health and I'm happy about all three of those very very much so there's any questions I'm happy at Juventus mayor Barrett holding his briefing from his living room to all the news agencies there yes as you heard it there Jeff the death of Democratic National Convention will now be held on August seventeenth in Milwaukee August seventeenth one month back from when it originally was supposed to be in July here in the city but you know in Iraq I think interestingly the word that the mayor used that I think people need to be aware of the issues fluid it is a under understandably it's a fluid sort of situation and I think what you're going to see S. time with what this was was an opportunity to to buy time to figure out you know where we are and but my guess is my guess is there's been no commitment at this point in time you know no certainty as to what exactly is it going to look like and I think that's a reasonable position we just you know who who knows exactly where we're going to be it two months from now but it is interesting to me that we're seeing so many of these dominoes already fall over for events in June and now July and now we know we're we're getting into August to me this makes eminent sense you hope that they're able to pull off something like this because again it's gonna be huge economic shot in the arm to Milwaukee and we're going to need an economic shot in the arm all ages they I mean they're still so many questions regarding the security the hotels the venues the entertainment the number of people in the the number of media that will be allowed to come in for this I mean we're talking about hotels in medicine and in Illinois some of these folks of that that's going to be a huge adjustment and I mean I assume that a lot of those hotels there's weddings generally in August the state state fair ends August sixteenth this is supposed to start the seventeenth so we are very very

"Tom Barrett has asked governor Eberts via his order to switch the election to mail in only and not allow in person voting on April seventh that has not been dealt with yet I do have a fear that the governor is going to be bad in person voting on actual election day is April seventh given that we know the Democrats always get a head start in the absentee if that occurs it will be a significant advantage to their side something again to watch for I mentioned earlier in the program that more than half the cases in Milwaukee county corona virus are middle aged African American males best reason to explain that as reported that J. S. I might as I mentioned in the show several days ago as bad a story that's been circulating among a lot of African Americans who were under the impression that somehow they can get this thing obviously are they K. had but if you didn't hear the announcer yesterday summer presses would move back to September they got a hold of for three consecutive weekends I'm ninety festival spread over three weekends I think it'll be a train wreck myself it's been explained to me that they felt the need to have that they had to do a given the fact that so many bands tour schedules are up that they had massive cancellations of tours already have a lot of the performers that were scheduled and how can you have summer fest that there's no performance is going on it sure seems to be that some of these bands and many others are making a lot of premature decisions about canceling things the Olympics I perhaps understand because it's an international global event but here in the United States were on the verge of very strong pressure to resist all this closing stuff instead of re opening things they had if the experts are right of the virus the thing that's going to do the most to knock it out is going to be warm weather and it may well be that by June or July we are going to be through the worst of this said there would be no reason to not have a lot of these events going on I admit that summer fest a massive event that requires a lot of planning is in a different type of category we come back after the break I'm gonna give you are six o'clock word in the pay your bills cash contest we've already had a winner this afternoon we had another winner on my show yesterday FOR WYO said listener winners so far in total your text has about a thousand dollars come what we had another you claiming we have another winner the four o'clock hour we knocked out of the park to the three o'clock at the four o'clock hour contests were both won by W.
